OMG. You are amazing, my friend. Happy cake day! I love love love this contest idea!! And it gives me motivation to actually finish a drawing!! Thank you for this!!

  1. 1 2 3 4 5

  2. The person I love the most is my wonderful and amazing boyfriend. The past few years have been pretty rough for me.. I struggled with super low self-esteem and trying to recover from abusive relationships. My home life seems to be getting more and more uncomfortable and stressful and things were just looking pretty gloomy. Then he came into my life. He gladly accepted me the way I am. He accepted all of my flaws and faults and still encourages me to get better. I don't have to pretend to be perfect around him. For the first time in a relationship, I feel safe. He makes me laugh and smile just by being himself. He knows what little things I love like spending $2 to feed ducks and geese for 6 hours, or just cuddling and watching a movie or talking. He always wants to help and he tries so hard to help me feel comfortable. I know I'm a lot to deal with, but he works with me. I have never felt so beautiful and so appreciated. I failed a class last semester and I was so upset, so afraid. He didn't get upset or disappointed. He said, "You tried your best, right? You know what you did wrong. You know where you struggled. Take it again next semester and try your best again. I know you can do it." In my family, education has a high place and failure is the worst possible thing. It was truly different and shocking to hear those words. To hear someone who I cared about and who knew what I was trying to do to tell me it was okay that I failed. I know I'm a stronger person because of him. I'm more confident and I'm not as hard on myself. I can't imagine being with anyone else, but I know if we do end for some reason, it'll be okay. He treats me so amazingly and he keeps letting me see these good aspects of myself I never noticed. He supports me and I support him. We're able to talk to each other about a problem that comes up without a huge fight or blaming one another. I admire him so much and respect him. He's truly one of the most amazing humans I could have ever met. I'm just so glad that we work well together. <3

  3. This is definitely my best work yet. c: Thank you for holding this contest and giving me the drive to work so hard on this piece c: It's perfect timing too! His birthday is coming up! :D ONTO THE PICTURES. Here is the picture I referenced. Here is my drawing c:

  5. I hope you have a fantabulous time before the river, during the river, and after the river! You are an amazing person. I don't know you well, but I really hope that I'll be able to do a contest as big as yours some time in the future! This is a great idea!
u/benjaminsl90 · 2 pointsr/explainlikeimfive

First off, I'm going to define some terms to make sure we're on the same side when it comes to the word "artificial".

Gemstones (rare, pretty looking rocks like diamonds, sapphires, rubies, etc) are be categorized this way:

  • Natural - came out of the ground, cut to look nice and sold pretty much as it (except for being cut)
  • Genuine - came out of the ground, treated in some way (like adding color improvement), cut, and sold
  • Synthetic - made in a lab, but chemically the exact same structure as the gemstone that came out of the ground, STILL A REAL DIAMOND! JUST DIDN'T COME OUT OF THE GROUND, still very valuable, but about 25% less than natural diamond
  • Imitation - fake gemstones, (made from glass, cubic zirconia, plastic, etc.) has very low actual value, still legal to sell as long as you tell the customer it is imitation

Ways you can tell cubic zirconia from a natural or synthetic diamond:

  1. It will not be as hard as a real
  2. It will not have the same sparkle when you shine a light on it
  3. It will look completely flawless (real diamonds are not)
  4. It will usually be completely colorless (real diamonds are not)
  5. If someone is trying to pass it off as real, they will usually sell it below market value

Ways you can tell a natural diamond from a synthetic, this is a lot harder and you could not know for sure

using the naked eye. Synthetic diamonds will be nearly flawless in inclusions (little imperfections in the structure) ,

and color. But still, some natural diamonds are like this.

The only way to know for sure is to have it sent to the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) for analysis. They can usually tell by looking at the color and inclusions in the diamond. In addition, synthetic diamonds are tiny etchings on them that are invisible to the naked eye saying that they are synthetic. You need special tools to see this though. Also, synthetic diamonds are categorized.

tl;dr: You can't tell a lab grown diamond by yourself. You have to have it sent off to be looked at. However, you can usually tell a cubic zirconia by yourself if you know what to look for.

Forgot to mention, another way a consumer can easily tell a real diamond from cubic zirconia is by using a diamond tester: https://www.amazon.com/HDE-Accuracy-Professional-Jeweler-Selector/dp/B009H4WGWK/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=diamonds+tester&qid=1556744168&s=gateway&sr=8-3-spell

http://www.reddit.com/r/askscience/comments/e1sa0/my_kids_asked_santa_for_a_microscope_for/ Some not bad advice in that thread. Let me second a stereo-microscope. The stereomicroscope in my lab is easily my favorite to play with. I'd start by reading this

I think something like this or something like this which are, as far as I can tell, modified dermatologist scopes, might be good for a 5th grader. (Reviews are pretty good indicators on this, though don't trust zoom numbers most zoom 20-30x and the rest is all digital.) I spent a summer volunteering at a place with something like these, they are fun. Also if you want something that doesn't take pictures but is a pretty neat field scope you should check out, this, this, or this (note, jeweler loupes do not have lights built in). If you want something kind of medium range, most sites recommend Celestron scopes as pretty good. If you really want a compound microscope (and you know how to operate a microscope, I can't emphasize this enough, otherwise it will not work!) this is recommended by the microscope buying guide. (Also as someone else said, you will run out of stuff to look at pretty fast with a compound scope.) Though that site has a number of nice compound microscopes.

I thought I'd share my experience for the community, and hopefully my experiences help or encourage others to give this a shot on their own. I had absolutely no experience growing anything when I started, so if I can do it, so can anyone else!

I've got an equipment list of the stuff I'm using since it took me a long time to figure out what to buy. This doesn't include the $1.50/week for RO water from the local grocery store, the electricity, or the other stuff I ended up buying afterward for my clones.

No grow tent or ventiliation is needed for my scenario since I have full access to a basement. It's perfect since there is a water heater and a boiler in the same room so the temp is always pretty constant, there is plenty of CO2 from the gas that the appliances burn, and the humidity is also pretty constant.

A few of the mistakes I made that I'd fix next time:

  • Buying a heating mat for germination/clones. I only got 1 out of 5 seeds to germinate, and thankfully that one turned into a good plant. I think heat was where I went wrong since I also tried to do clones without a mat and none of them rooted. When using the mat I bought, I had much, much better success.

  • After transplanting my germinated seed, I let that plant go too long in a small container and it got a little root bound. Should have transplanted sooner.

  • I was in the veg stage longer than I think I needed to. Went on vacation in the middle and that screwed up my schedule a little bit, but I think I'd be better off with less veg time for the next plant

  • Buy a better pH pen. I cheaped out on that and I've never gotten it calibrated correctly, so I've been using the dropper/eye test method with the General Hydro test kit that comes with the pH Up/Down. That method seems to work just fine, but it's kind of a hassle.

The images have some details about my grow, but I'll be happy to answer any other questions folks might have.

u/l3rooklyn · 2 pointsr/fountainpens

I can totally relate to the frustration of a poorly performing pen. I'd answer that you need to invest a little effort to enjoy an effortless writing experience -- kinda the theme with fountain pens.

Fountain pens are often, if not usually, imperfect out of the box. Maybe there are machining oils still left in the cartridge or feed. Maybe in transit the pen got bumped around and the nib became misaligned. Sometimes you get a bum nib that's just not quite up to snuff. These kinds of problems can result in scratchy nibs and/or inconsistent flow.

The good news is that fountain pens can be tuned -- not only to resolve issues like the above but also to meet your personal preferences (e.g. heavy vs light flow; feedback vs glassy). And in even better news, many of the most common problems can be solved by yourself without needing to send a pen to a nibmeister.

To start, you should buy a loupe, which will help you inspect your nib up close and diagnose what's causing your issues. I like this one. (They also come in single packs, but the two pack is like 50 cents more.)

Next, you should have a look at some of the guides available online that will get you started with tuning your pens. Here are a couple good ones from two of America's best known nibmeisters: (1) John Mottishaw; (2) Richard Binder.

I'd bet that if you get a loupe and use it to inspect the pens that aren't to your liking, you'll see why and figure out how to fix it. It's probably little more than a matter of aligning the tines and flushing with some soapy water.

Hope that helps, and good luck!

20x?!! Are you sure she's using a true 20x loupe? If you picked up a cheap loupe online, chances are, it's not a 20x. For instance: http://www.amazon.com/SE-Loupe-LED-Illuminated-21mm/dp/B0013E3DAG => advertised to be 20x, but turns out to be ~5.5x.

I would recommend first figuring out the minimum magnification power your wife needs to read small text. Reason: There is an inverse relationship between magnification power, and depth of field and field of view. Meaning, there is no 20x magnifier that can give you a huge field of view (I have a true 20x, and dear god, it is useless to me since it can only view about 1 character at a time).

Here's an example of the tradeoff: I own several Donegan OptiVISOR headband magnifiers. At first, I ordered their most powerful model, the 3.5x. The 3.5x has a focal length of 4", and a depth of field of about 1". This means, in order for me to have a clear image of what I'm observing, I need to make sure I maintain a 3" to 5" distance between the lens and the item under observation; it was just exhausting.

After trial and error, I ended up with the the 1.75x. It has a focal length of 14", and a depth of field of about 4". Which means, I can keep the item under observation at a distance of 10" - 18", which is much more forgiving.

In case you're interested in the headband magnifier: http://www.amazon.com/Donegan-OptiVisor-Headband-Magnifier-Magnification/dp/B0068OSIIS/

Never done twisted builds before myself, but from what I've seen I'd say your twists are a little too loose. They do make special pliers for twisting wires that make it much easier to get good twists on craft wire, so I'd imagine they'd work great for the job. Get yourself one of these and it'll give you nice tight twists every time.

u/SugarSugarBee · 3 pointsr/AskWomen

When I did bookbinding, I started with a Kit from a paper store and that helped me figure out where to get started. So after that, I went and bought all the items separately to make better quality versions of what the kit did, and expanded from there. It was helpful for me.

If you have a craft store like Michael's nearby, they have jewelry sections with little starter tool kits. You mostly need a really good pair of needle-nose pliers with a cutting edge on them. something like this will work well for chains/pendants. After that you need the clasps, which come in all types. Amazon searches will bring up a lot and there's a ton in craft stores.

Start small and work through trial and error. Making jewelry can be really easy when you're just putting the pieces together, and it doesn't take up a lot of space. Fun hobby!

Seconding this! I got a little plastic 'bar' that sits at the bottom and keeps my ring at the right size. I think I got 5 6 for 10 bucks on amazon? I've also seen ones that are gold/silver (ebay) which might be preferable for some, but I needed it right away so the cheap ones on Amazon prime worked for me! It also loosens slightly over time (and if you bend the plastic a lot - like I did).

Edit: I also found that my ring fit on my finger really well when he first proposed, but was super loose the next day, and changes every day (swelling, ugh) so the non permanency of these really appeals to me!

Link to the one I got: https://www.amazon.ca/RINGO-6-Pack-Invisible-Material-Perfect/dp/B01LWTZC9H/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1484688076&sr=8-2&keywords=ringo

u/StridAst · 2 pointsr/Cosmere

The easiest way is to go in to any local jeweler, and ask them to check your ring size. It's usually free, easy and accurate. Be sure to check any fingers you are interested in wearing a ring on. Just type the sizes in a note on your phone, then you've got several different fingers if you ever need to know.

The next easiest is order a ring sizing gauge set from somewhere online. Amazon has some. This way however, isn't free. It does get you a ring sizing gauge though if you ever need to use it again.

u/BaneWayne · 2 pointsr/battlekits

I'm gonna copy a comment I made over on trees... Short answer is a container of steel screens in the top left and a jewelers loupe in the bottom right.

Everything is all labeled out here

I bought my grinder on [amazon for $7] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0023X32MA/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_KRYRub1MSFKSW). It works awesome.

I also got the screens (100) on [amazon] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007BQTC5U/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_tTYRub0BVP71J) for $4.

The empty green travel container is what I put a bit in if I'm heading over to a friends for the night. That and the two clear ones are from my recreational shop (WAent).

I don't use the normal sized lighters much, usually I choose the mini lighters.

I bought both the [zig zag roller] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002Q7WRDI/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_xUYRub0X73KSK) and the [blackberry juicy jay's] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ESM6AMI/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_bXYRub1X7WAV1) at my smoke shop for $5 and $2 respectively.

My friend gave me the big old nug the other day so I just stashed it in here so I didn't mix strains.

The tweezers is for "handling" the nugs to put them in the grinder. I don't want to lose ANY crystals.

Burn gel (lidocane) because I'm clumsy as FUCK when I'm at a [6+].

Eye drops for dry eyes.

Hand sanitizer because I get stamped ash all over my hands from the way I hold my lighter.

Doob toob for obvious reasons. It's from a disposable e-cig from before I quit smoking.

I got the rainbow storage tube from the dollar store. I keep stems and glass screens in it. Sometimes I keep a few grams in it too if I have more than one strain.

Watermelon gum because it is my favorite taste when I'm high. Tic-tacs to take a minty toke. Emergency kit Kat for reasons.

A 30x21mm jeweler's loupe to look [closely] (http://imgur.com/f2knddq) at my [weed] (http://imgur.com/QRjZVc8)...and maybe [doritos] (http://imgur.com/BOS4v4t).

Edit: here is the link for the [jeweler's loupe] (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B008BXQVO2/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_BxZRub1S2EF44).

u/starfish31 · 5 pointsr/intermittentfasting

I personally found these less annoying than the kind that fit all the way around the band, but if you remove your ring a lot then the kind that stay on the band like the spiral would be better. I'm planning on having my wedding band fitted properly and hopefully just wear it on top so the engagement ring stays put.

u/1111123414916 · 1 pointr/geology

These are by and large my favorites. Totally worth the cost. My only complaint is that the screw needs pretty frequent tightening, but overall it's really sturdy. Honestly, I've never found anything over 10x to be particularly useful.

u/atrevely · 2 pointsr/mtgfinance

Just got this one in the mail, has 30x and 60x. Comes with two of them, so maybe buy with a buddy? Has bright LEDs on each magnifier. Pretty solid overall, definitely recommend.

You could look around Etsy for a style you like! Since a lot of stuff on Etsy is handmade, the maker should also be able to modify the ring to fit your size. Price there can range from $3 to $50 depending on what you're looking for (though some can be a lot more expensive). Etsy also sells vintage and costume jewelry rings if you know what size to search for!

If you get a plastic ring sizer like this one, it will also be easier know which size to ask for/get!

Howdy there! Without knowing where you live-- presumably the UK, judging by the content of your post-- I can't direct you to a specific retailer or brand as it may not be available to you.

That being said, I picked up this cheapo pin vise off the interwebs and a pack of Magcraft Magnets (1.6mm, 200 count). Most drill bits you'd need can probably be found at your local hardware store or online for much cheaper. These 1.6mm magnets work the best in my opinion, since they fit inside Infantry torsos and in most vehicle attachment slots.

Now, with that being said, it really depends on what size of magnets you're using or what you are trying to magnetize. Magcraft is my go-to brand and they've got all sorts of weird sizes and shapes for all your magnet-ey needs. Plink me back if you've got more questions!

I bought a cheap pack of ring size adjusters from Amazon and they’re great! I started Keto the week I got engaged and have lost about half a ring size since then. I can’t feel the sizer on my finger, and I’m not accidentally sliding my ring off when I wash my hands anymore!

Like Mr fluffy said, 4-5 more weeks.

Those buds look like they aren't even done growing. They'll chunk up quite a bit more and then the calyxs will finally swell.

Invest in a loupe and check your trichs, it's the only accurate means of checking, and a vital part of your grow.

This looks like the one I've been using, I already had them for electronics work.

I find it easier to use one with a wider lens for checking trichomes, even if that means slightly less magnification.

u/MrMartyJones · 3 pointsr/keto

I had the same issue, but my ring is the tungsten so it can't be resized. I have found these work pretty well!

I dealt with spider mites not too long ago.

Buy Diatomaceous Earth and sprinkle it around the base of your plant. Buy Neem Oil, insecticidal soap, and an insecticide like Captain Jack's Dead Bug Brew that uses Spinosad. Every 3 days, spray the tops AND bottoms of every leaf with one of these, using a different spray each time. Continue this for 5 weeks after you don't see anymore mites.

I might be an idiot for this, but I sprinkled some DE into a fan and blasted it all over my tent. Stupid or not, I didn't see a single mite for the rest of the grow after that combined with releasing predatory mites.

This might cost you 50 bucks or so, but it's worth it to knock them out now and not risk them returning or wiping out your plants.

If you wanna get a better look at the mites, you can buy a macro lens for your phone here. You could also buy a jeweler's loupe here.

For sanding I think I’m using this one, and also this one. For the hammer, I use this one, gently.

2-3 probably, just depends on how you want your trichomes clear/cloudy/amber. She should continue to get fat, mine our. I've bought several different microscopes and this is my favorite

Clothes: if she still has a ways to go, have her buy new clothes at a thrift store with a changing room. Don't trust number sizes OR eyes...try them on first to make sure it fits! She's probably used to being "bigger" still and might end up grabbing larger clothes. Go with her and if you see her doing that, say, "hon, I think that might be too big for you now."

Ring: Get your wife some of these ring size adjusters for now. You don't know when her ring size will stabilize, and the last thing you want to do is resize a ring more than twice. Use these!

I would get a temporary ring size adjuster online (a little piece of plastic that will make the ring fit more snugly) until you’re done losing weight. Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Ring-Size-Adjuster-Loose-Rings/dp/B0757JLTY7

Also, ask the ring maker if they have a sizer you can use. Even if they’re not local, some will mail you one so that you can check your size at home using the exact same tool they’ll be using.

As a temporary solution, there are plastic ring "size adjusters" you can wear. Here's one example, here's another example.

Have you checked cardboard dumpsters out behind stores? I can usually find a decent variety of different sized boxes behind dollar stores and other shops. Saves you some money too.

Also, as mentioned, you could use a box resizer like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Aviditi-SIZER-Carton-Sizer-Reducer/dp/B000ZJOGHE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1409259088&sr=8-1&keywords=box+resizer

I bought a 30x jeweler's loupe off of Amazon for less than $6.

I use this to check to see if the nib is out of whack.

Its not a GW model he's working on but this will explain the basic concept you need to understand and the tools that will be involved.

That's basically the citadel pin vise without the markup. I use one similar for my pinning projects. As a side note if you have a knockoff xacto with the cross chuck it works just fine with some dremel bits. I'm lucky to have a dremel kit laying around to steal bits from.

YO I FUCKED THIS UP! DON'T BE ME! I went through her ring box while she was out of town, measured them all, averaged them, and it turned out she had like high school rings in there, and a toe ring, and a ring of her grandmother's.

I proposed and she couldn't get the ring on and she was cool about it but it wasn't really OK. There are all these photos on Facebook that she took that night and her finger is like turning purple.

IF IN DOUBT GET IT TOO BIG and have a stash of ring size adjusters in your pocket just in case. It's easy and cheap to get it resized later.

ALSO DON'T BE ME: somehow I had it in my head that you only wear an engagement ring until marriage so it's not that big a deal if it doesn't fit right or isn't perfect. This is completely false and I am an idiot with a wife who is way out of my league but fortunately hasn't realized it yet.
