I think everyone else has the basic cleaning tips covered already. I listen to an audiobook, podcast, or other such things when I clean. I find it makes the work go easier because I have this fun and interesting thing to listen to and if I get into it enough I want to keep cleaning so I can listen more. Music doesn't usually have the "I want more" aspect and doesn't work as well for me.

Edit: Oh! Bar Keepers Friend is amazing. It is the only thing I have found to clean my flat ceramic stove and it works wonders on the shower floor too. That floor was stained yellow when we moved in and this turned it white again. Amazing stuff.

I transitioned into working on my bikes almost entirely by myself (Wheel building/suspension service/bearings excluded) and this is the exact path I went down as well. Here is everything I bought from Amazon:

And some additional small things like cables, cable end caps, ferrules, zip ties, etc. A set of needle nose pliers can be handy to help push/pull stubborn cables/housings as well.

Also, to make working on the bike 10x easier, I recommend getting a stand. I use this one because I am space constrained and it folds up nice and small, but there are probably better ones out there.

It seems like a lot of $$ to lay out at first, but it pays for itself pretty quickly compared to taking the bike to a shop every time you need to do something to it. Basically everything you need to do can be found on YouTube as well.

This is a tough bike. I have one that's about forty years old. It doesn't take much care.

Besides tires and tubes, you also need new brake pads. Cheap but very important.

In order of increasing cost/benefit:

Clean the drive train (all the gears and the chain) with rags and a degreaser. Old toothbrushes and dish brushes can help with this. You want to remove all the black, caked grease and clean the components to the bare metal. Once they are clean, let them dry and lubricate them.

Have a LBS replace the brake and shifter cables and housings. You probably have the original ones. Replacing these greatly reduces the risk of snapping a cable or two on the road, something that can render the bike unrideable. It will also make shifting and braking much smoother.

If your LBS tells you your chain is worn out, they are probably right. This is also a cheap fix. It will make shifting smoother and protect your drive train from excessive wear. It also lowers the risk of a broken chain on the road, which again makes the bike unrideable.

Apply thinly to dirty areas of cooktop, let dry, scrape off with a razor blade, scoop up dried product. Done. Takes 5 min or less if you do it after every few days of cooking. Honestly, I do mine every night while filling the dishwasher. By the time the dishwasher is filled and the pots & pans are washed--the surface is ready to scrape. Very easy. ;)

I think it's having a problem draining, or perhaps there are issues with mineral build-up on the spray arms. My Amana had clogged holes in the spray arms that significantly reduced the efficiency of the unit.

You may want to try some dishwasher cleaner. These help clean and demineralize the inside of the dishwasher.

Honestly, if you have pools of soap in the bottom of the dishwasher, I think it's likely a draining problem. You may need a service man or plumber to look at it.

Also, find the manual (online or in paper) for your dishwasher. Many of these have a screen that can be easily cleaned as well as a cleaning and maintenance procedure. It may be worthwhile to try that before spending any money.

I use a glass top, just don't drop your pan on it, you'll be fine. They're very easy to clean too. You can use a razor scraper for any badly burned on stuff, and this product will keep it clean well.

This is the stuff we use. Used the mixture you mentioned for awhile when number 1 was a baby and didn't work as well (esp on left on stains). Someone mentioned this stuff for even set in poop stains. We put some in a spray bottle with a little water. Anytime there is poop, we rinse off the chunks and then spray this on. Even if we don't get to the laundry for a day or two, everything comes out great. Just remember, what works today, might not work later and vise versa, parenting is all about finding what works for now, lol.

Have you ever used Barkeeper's Friend? I use it to clean my stainless steel pans, and it works great. I haven't used it on chrome, so I don't know if it would damage it. It's worth googling around to see if people have tried it.

It's on amazon with good reviews, so it's probably actually good advice.

Or, you could use a kitchen wax that doesn't smell. And the wax really does make it easier to clean up messes.

This stuff works pretty well.

I have carrera marble in my kitchen. We just discovered a really huge etch due to a glass with vinegar sitting there all night. I did a little research and found this product really works wonders. There's a youtube video that you can watch to help you figure it out. Smaller etches come out with a few minutes of work. The larger ones may take a few applications. You have to reseal your counters afterwards as this removes all of the sealing. But you should do that yearly anyways.

For your marble countertops, take a look at this product.

We had marble tile installed in the shower and also have marble countertops, both which were lightly damaged during the install. A harsh chemical was used on both and the marble developed light scratches and this ugly white film on it.

That polish brought everything back to brand-new. It was a TON of work, mostly because it really took some elbow grease to get the polish back and you only work in small areas at a time, but it was worth it.

Our remodel didn't take as long as yours, but it was definitely fraught with problems and by the end I just wanted the contractors gone. Sorry to hear about the problems you had. Hope you're able to get everything fixed and to your liking.

Edit: Regarding the product I recommended, it's a small tub, but a little goes a long way. I used about a tub and a half for the full shower.

They wick well and don't deteriorate even when buried in soil.

I have my electric shaver foils on 6 month s&s, so I always have a good shave without thinking.

The oddest item I have is dishwasher cleaner. Cleans out hard water stains and makes old dishwashers work again while eliminating the funk smell which can't be good.

I buy this oven cleaner spray from Walmart or wherever. It works just like that. Use gloves or be careful to not get it on your skin. It’ll cause irritation.

I use the liquid pre-mixed formula (Amazon Link). You can find this at most stores that sell cleaning supplies too. I put a small amount on a sponge and then just rinse it off after.
