Carbon rod. I joined the two pieces with a 3D-printed bushing around a ¼-20 stainless bolt, nesting into another 3D-printed bushing with a thermoset insert. This means that the staff can be broken down for storage or transport and that a camera can be mounted at half- or full-length.
LED strip.
This is the one that I used, but the radius of the rod is tight enough that the waterproofing rubber split and peeled off a bit. If I were making another one, I would go with the non-waterproof version. Either way, sheathing the whole pole in heat-shrink is probably a good move. I used this in 1-1/2 inch but smaller woul've worked.
To allow the staff to break in two and still work, I cut the strip and soldered on MT-30s via short wire leads. Worked great!
The camera is an insta360 One X. It's fine for what it is. Good for serious videography. The Samsung Gear 360 looks like a very nice, chesper alternative, and has video looping, so it'd be great in a "dashcam" role.
I worked in a ski shop and I have fixed a couple of delaminated snowboards with epoxy and I know it is not the same application but it is very strong. Tape off the work area, Mix the epoxy, pry it open. and get as much of that in there as you can. Use the whole tube or two if you have to. The board is hollow because that is how they are heat pressure molded into shape. Yo can squirt the mixture into a ziplock bag and mix it in there then cut off the tip of a corner of the ziplock bag to make it like one of those cake decorating frosting bags so you can squirt it in the board. You only get one good shot at it once it is mixed. You can use a couple of carbon strips like a bandaid to finish it off once the inside dries. Wear latex gloves work fast and it dries glossy. Fine sanding and clear coat spray to make it shinny again if you like.
Piece of cake
Edit:
I just found this patch for you.
Maybe if you get enough epoxy in there and just clamp it down you wont need the carbon patch.
Here are bigger bottles of epoxy
If use the carbon patches you can shrink wrap it in this to to dry tight and hard.
If all the electronics still works I would try to repair it just to keep me riding, at least for now. If you do it right you will not notice.
I got a usable sheet of Garolite for like $13 from Amazon....not too pricey.
Good to know about the plywood though!
You can get it for pretty cheap on amazon. You’ll need this , some epoxy, and a mold
As you know, it's as much art as it is science. I was running with a ghetto enclosure and a microswiss hotend at ~400 degrees, I think. Phenolic paper is the ideal bed material https://www.amazon.com/Phenolic-Paper-Grade-Natural-Length/dp/B008OYKVCQ The sheet doesn't need to be changed between prints, just cleaned.
Made 5 that way before I when whole hog and bought a GG2.
Yes. I got my rods at Amazon
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00TF8UY9A/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Bit pricey, but... 8mm is not the most common size. Seems 10mm is more common.
I know I've seen some people went into Walmart and got arrow shafts for $4 each. Not sure how close to the 8mm they are.
Yeah, sorry, was simply posting that it can be purchased on Amazon. Here is a sheet of 1mm thick. That would be what you find with cf grips. https://www.amazon.com/ReliaBot-Carbon-Thickness-Glossy-Surface/dp/B07KW48VH4/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=carbon+fiber+1mm&qid=1572898897&sr=8-4
Looks like this stuff I've used on RC planes:
Midwest 5720 Carbon Fiber Tube .125 24" https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000BQYLOY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_W13GAb6AR2ZQ9
I settled on that shape because of that same issue. I was having trouble visualizing bending everything. And as far as fiberglass, this is the first time I've ever worked with it. If I was more experienced it may have been easier. I do like the extra stiffness/stability it gives to the structure. The working time with the resin is tough, and doing it on a vertical surface was difficult. And yes, the fiberglass is laid over the wood. The total cost of the fiberglass was around $170. This is the fabric I used
Fantasycart Fiberglass Cloth 6.48oz 59"wide in 50ft long https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00M188N2G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_PEwvzbDV1RKRR
And this is the resin
TotalBoat 5:1 Epoxy Kit (Gallon, Fast Hardener) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HR85152/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_RFwvzb2G5NEZE
The prices have gone up a little since.
Since your going to wrap it anyways you might as well buy this USAQ 300x200x2MM 3K Carbon Fiber Composite Panel for R/C Airframes 2MM Carbon Sheet https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06Y144Z99/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_an2-BbKRGEZHP and have it water/laser jetted.
how long did that take to print?!
also, is it threaded rod running the whole way through? I assume its threaded rod cause of the locking nut and fender washer at the pommel.
I made a sword recently and designed a cavity into the print to hold a carbon fiber tube. But I like the idea of adding tension to the model with a threaded rod...i mean...if thats whats happening here...
The sheet seemed to have a fiber weave when I cut it. The length of the fibers and percentage of fibrous materials could certainly be different. I got it from Amazon. When I googled the name of the product I got data sheets that described it as paper based, so perhaps the internal structure is simply paper fibers instead of fiberglass?
Would you suggest the garolite from McMaster-Carr such as this?
this is what you want to use. just put some of that 3/8" foam into the crevice and put the sealant on top. the pressure washer will tear right through it though so you will need to be careful.
I just grabbed a tube from work. It had a small crack at the end and was going to be thrown away. To me, that wasn't a problem given the end caps I made for it... I guess CF tubes this large in diameter are expensive...
This would work well. Just be careful cutting it because carbon fiber dust is pretty bad for you.
These were what I used
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00RWYANKY/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1
and
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B018VO5AQA/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1
You are right, why am I even messing around. http://www.amazon.com/Phenolic-Opaque-Off-White-Thickness-Length/dp/B0013HQ73S/ref=pd_sim_indust_3
Done.
I feel this on a spiritual level. Try to track down a sheet of G-10 phenolic sheet from a reputable seller and make sure it's flat. I got this stuff https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B0013HQ73S/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 . Mine's only warped by about 0.003" but even that's a bit on the edge. 65C bed temp and let a very light layer of elmers bake into it for a bit. I run a 25mm/s first layer in a semi-enclosed space with this setup and don't need a brim. Some people claim to print nylon with no heat or adhesive on garolite but YMMV.
