It is pretty much a razer core with a included gtx 1070. Huge bang for your buck.

If you really want to play games like Witcher 3 and Ark on the thing, look into external graphics cards. These are graphics cards that work outside of your T470.

Have you looked at the Gigabyte Aorus Box?

It is the cheapest quality option I could find. Haven't bought an eGPU yet but this is top of my list.

I can't attest to this working or not, but if you have Amazon Prime I'd just get it on there, simply because if it doesn't work, it will be easy to return.

Thunderbolt 3 has a 40 gig pipeline. You can plug in eGPUs like this: https://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-AORUS-Gaming-Graphic-GV-N1070IXEB-8GD/dp/B073PYMG3G and run it as your graphics card.

It has a 1060 now, but down the road when nvidia is on the 1360 or whatever and the system is feeling slow, you plug one of those suckers in through the thunderbolt port and you're good to go. It's basically laptop future-proofing.

I got the 7577 for that reason almost entirely, and not many machines under 1500 have the port, and those that do are usually tablets. Gaming machines with a TB3 port are like 2k, so that Inspiron is an absolute steal for what you get.

The only way I know to do an external GPU is through a thunderbolt 3 connector which I have not yet seen built in to a desktop motherboard. You would need something like this to get the thunderbolt 3 port and then something like this to plug into it. I assume you have a full ATX motherboard and not a micro ATX. A case like this one would probably be a good option and keep your GPU internal. Cases that size always have some restrictions though like GPU height and CPU cooler height.

Those have been a thing since the PCI-E expansion cards in laptops, albeit more ghetto back then.

That model has optional Thunderbolt 3. Make SURE yours has thunderbolt 3 and not just a USB type C connector (there's a difference).

If you do, in fact, have TB3, then you can pick up an external GPU. Gigabyte has by-far the best value for those at the moment. Their eGPU is only $100 more than the Razer core, but it has a GTX 1070 already installed.

This external one costs less than most inside the PC ones, but you can probably get the bugger out and stuff it in the PC

The price actually seems to have went up about $90 since I posted. I think the yoga uses 4x Thunderbolt 3. I'm aware that there might be performance hits with the eGPU. I'm not really looking for full gaming desktop performance, just something a little closer to it when I'm at my desk.

for some reason all the rx 580s and 1070s are used, but they are in 350-400 buck price range

I'd stick away from the 1080s they are all way too overpriced with used ones at $800 when the brand new ones were $650. They were everywhere about 2 months ago but I guess they stopped stocking pascal because of turing.

If you shop around, you can find good eGPU's that are only $125 more than their bare cards cost. And you can get a GPU that's capable of things like decent VR which you can't have built in on any available mac.

it's actually small and portable and pretty good after the firmware updates - fan noise is no longer so annoying that I would replace the fans. The only thing is USB bandwidth still seems to be limited - but it's working fine for USB HDD and Xbox wireless adapter etc for me. Just Oculus complains and asks me to use a different USB port, so I guess the full USB 3 bandwidth isn't available.

The card looks... shorter than other cards I've used. Is there a performance difference with this size card compared to "normal" ones?

Are you not aware that they make external graphics cards for exactly this reason?

So I never followed through with the USB-C portable screen idea. The more I looked and shopped around the more that a dedicated gaming laptop seemed to be the most convenient solution for 1080p portable gaming.

 

The furthest I got in problem solving was hunting for an ITX sized motherboard that would have a built in "HDMI-IN" as well as a PCI slot for a small graphics card. The trouble was finding that form factor with the "HDMI-IN". I wasn't able to find one that was suitable (not to say they dont exist, the internet is big). When I couldn't find this, the next idea was an ITX form factor with 2 pci ports on the MOBO. (The idea was getting a pci card that has "HDMI-IN" to get around needing a MOBO with "HDMI-IN")

 

Well needing an extra PCI port requires a larger MOBO size which also requires a larger case. This was starting to defeat my need of portability. The more I looked and brain stormed, the more that a gaming laptop seemed to be the best course of action for my specific case.

 

However, I did purchase This ASUS Zenscreen USB-C Monitor to test out how well the screens work (latency, quality, motion, etc etc). The monitor worked very well. I plugged it up to USB 3.0 on my home PC for reference. (so i'd blindly guess that output by USB-C would provide some benefit). I played divinity 2 on it as a test and everything ran fine, color space was pretty good, latency wasn't noticeable in that type of game. Surely something more action based might be noticeable. (I can go into more details if you'd like on this monitor, if I know the answer of course haha)

 

So, to sum it up. The more I tried to solve the tough problem of portability the more the answer looked like something pre-built like a gaming laptop. The ones i've been looking at in particular are

• over 60hz, G-Sync, 15.3" and 17.6" monitors These are ideal fantasy laptops
  
• either over 60hz, or G-Sync 15.3" and 17.6" monitors These are high refresh rate OR g-sync monitors. More price friendly.
  
  I'm only familiar with xoticPC through one purchase 4 years ago so there may be better options out there. But the custom build approach allows getting larger harddrives, replaced a HDD with SDD, and what nots. (probably cheaper to do some of the upgrades yourself if you are able). It also seems to be one of the few websites that shows you one stick of ram or two options. (2 obviously preferred) Its just a damn shame RAM is so freaking expensive these days.
  
   
  
  Oh, and on the Wacom Link. I'm no expert by any means but I dont see why it wouldn't work? My first concern would be latency added. Also here is another kind of interesting idea I came across... a 1070 eGPU This could open a couple options like a lightweight laptop for work and what nots, but at home or at a hotel something a little more powerful for gaming and what nots. (I've barely looked into it, so do some homework if this sounds interesting)
