Gifts I've given, or considered giving, over the years -- descending price order

u/syaami · 4 pointsr/RedditLaqueristas

Just start painting your nails and you will figure out what works best for you eventually. I've compiled a list of helpful links/videos that I've found helpful for me.

Dotting Tools:

  • Cutepolish's video on how to make your own dotting tool.
  • <$2 on amazon. It might take a while to get to you if it's being shipped from China though.

    Stripping tape:

  • $1.08 on amazon.
The trick when you use stripping tape is to make sure your polish isn't old and too goopy, otherwise it will not be so crisp.
  • And use tweezers like this or this.

    Cleaning

  • You will get the hang of cleaning once you start practicing. If you get better at application you will have to do less cleaning. This will come with practice. I suck at doing nails with little mess. So I use acetone and a slanted brush. This might be a good set to get.
  • /u/ReneeJade 's post about cleaning up with toothpicks is very helpful too.

    Nail Polish Brands

  • This depends on how much money you want to spend. I started with Sinful Colors because no mula. But the formula is kinda bad and takes forever to dry. And Sinful Colors stain your nails really bad in my experience. Sally Hansen is pretty good for the price. I only just acquired a couple of China Glazes and Essie's. They are pretty good but I only buy it when it's less than $3. I don't have experiences with Orly, O.P.I.
  • Julep is okay in my opinion. Personally, I feel like they're not worth the price. One of my bottles just broke when I was turning the cap. And the other one (Julep Sasha) stained my nails really bad :/
  • There are nail polish programs like Julep Maven (who do a free first box with code FREEBOX) and other ones that I don't know about but head onto /r/BeautyBoxes to find out more.

    Top Coat and Base Coat

  • Orly bonder is a good base coat that I use. I don't have experiences with other ones, so I can't compare.
  • Getting a fast drying top coat is probably a good idea. I use Seche Vite but it has a really strong smell and it shrinks your polish. I'm trying to find a new one but Sally Hansen Insta Dry didn't work for me. It smudged my nail art even though it dries pretty fast. Poshe is supposed to be good but I don't have experience with it.

    Nail Strengthening

  • O.P.I. Nail envy is a lot of people's favorites but it didn't work for me personally. Just search this subreddit with "nail envy".
  • Quimica Alemana. This stuff has good reviews and I want to try it.

    Nail file

  • Use a crystal one. This one has good reviews or use an O.P.I. one. I use an O.P.I, pretty happy with it.

    Have fun painting!

My big toenail got totally ruined by fungus because I left it untreated for 2+ years. Tbh I didn't know what it was and thought it'd go away on its own.

A year ago, during my trip to Bali, I was in the water so much that half of my toenail actually fell off! This is when I finally started doing research and treating it. I went through a 9 month phase where I slacked off because I was traveling a lot, which is why you see it get much worse. But about 3 months ago I decided I've had enough and took this to the next level. I've been extremely proactive in my routine and am finally seeing results!!! It's a lot of work but it's really encouraging to see improvements.

Here's how I'm doing it:

  • Keep it filed down using this electric nail drill (be really careful not to get carried away & use the slowest setting. stop if you feel ANY pain)
  • Keep it clean & trimmed I make sure the sides of my nail/cuticle are free of debri and keep my nails short using these tools
  • Make sure to disinfect all tools & surfaces using alcohol or hand sanitizer & soap
  • Brush your toe 2-3 times a day with a soft tip toothbrush and tea tree oil body wash (especially in morning and before going to bed)
  • Apply Tea tree oil & Coconut oil after brushing
    • Why: Several studies have shown that tea tree oil has antifungal properties. (source) Coconut oil also has antifungal properties and also smoothes out your skin & nail, which is key cuz tea tree oil makes it really dry and rough
    • How: You can do it by hand, but to make it easier I bought this mini refillable perfume spray bottle, filled it up with tea tree oil & coconut oil 50/50. So all I gotta do is spray it on my toe after I brush and dry
  • Apply Vicks vaporub I apply this along with the tea tree oil & coconut oil once a day or so
  • Apply Urea Cream at night in addition to the tea tree oil & coconut oil
    • Numerous studies have shown combination therapy of urea and an antifungal agent to be an effective treatment for onychomycosis. Urea functions to soften the nail plate, which can enhance the passage of antifungal medications to the underlying nail bed.
  • Footsoaks I've done footsoaks 2-3 times a week for 30 min each. Recently I've been combining 2 part warm water, 1 part vinegar (distilled white or ACV), and like 5 tbsp baking soda. Sometimes I only do baking soda. Sometimes I add a few drops of tea tree oil. Sometimes I soak just with bleach & water. But if you do the bleach & water, make sure you use regular bleach (not the splashless kind). Anyways as you can tell, I kinda mix it up when it comes to footsoaks
    • In the lab, plain old sodium bicarbonate limited growth of the most common types of fungi that cause skin and nail infections. (source)
    • Vinegar can protect against bacteria, fungi, and other harmful microbes, so putting it into a foot soak could have potential benefits for the feet. source
  • Antifungal foot powder I use this foot powder anytime I wear shoes to keep it as dry as possible
  • Try to stay bare feet as much as possible
  • Put toe in sunlight as much as you can fungus hates the sun
  • Clean socks I change into fresh clean socks constantly
  • Handwash & sanitize socks I handwash all of my socks by soaking them in this collapsible dish tub with super hot water, laundry detergent, and a few drops of dettol, which is this super concentrated antiseptic liquid that kills the fungus
  • Spray on sanitizer If I'm ever lazy, I carry this hand sanitizer spray to spray my toenail before going to bed. I also spray this in my shoes & flip flops at night. I also use this to spray down my nail filer, sink, hands, etc. to not spread fungus.

Lota of great suggestions already. A few more less exciting suggestions, but useful.

  • sun hoodie $30-$50?
  • quality sunscreen $10 (I like Blue Lizard)
  • quality socks $10-$15 (I like DeFeet Aereators for fairly thin, very durable socks. They have cushioned versions too).
  • electric shoe dryer $25-$40 (I like DryGuys brand)
  • shoehorn $1 (surprisingly helpful if you have a heel blister)
  • little medical kit (about as large as a wallet)
  • nail clippers $5 (these ones are gifty and pretty good quality - Kikkerland Hand and Foot Nail Clippers Set, Silver https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0046C5B2A/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_0SCWDbHTKS79M)
  • inflatable camping pad ($40-$80) & packable sleeping bag ($90-$150) (i like big agnes brand and aircore pad & lost dog 45 degree) On this one, I think being able to pack it right is the primary thing. High temperature rating and not down insulation saves money here, but look carefully at packable size).

Edit: re sleeping bags, many/most Big Agnes bags are designed with insulation one one side only, intended to pair with their pads, which fit into a sleeve on the bag. This lets the bag pack tighter than most. I have had the lost dog bag (which I misplaced) and the cross mountain 45 degree bag, which is excellent, but needs a pad as described above. $100 on sale a few places.

I brush and floss in the morning and evening, and floss at lunchtime.

You need to take better care of your oral hygiene. It literally only takes a few minutes. Also, it might save your life.

You state in another place in this thread that you don't regularly shower. You need to be showering every day. I'm not sure what your situation is, but these are things that you should have learned by middle school at the latest, and preferably in grade school.

Please do the following, for yourself:

Go to the dentist.

Get a new soft-bristled toothbrush (every six months), a tube of toothpaste, and floss, and start brushing and flossing at least every morning and every night. Also, a lot of people brush incorrectly.

Here's a video showing the proper brushing technique.

Here's a video showing the proper flossing technique

For showering:

  • pair of exfoliating shower gloves
  • body soap (NOT a 3-in-1 shampoo/conditioner/body wash)
  • face wash
  • and a shampoo and condition (they should NOT be in the same bottle)].

    For skincare:

  • A face moisturizer with SPF
  • an exfoliator for your face (do NOT use the gloves on your face)
  • a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30
  • a night cream

Clip your fingernails and toenails, and use an emory board to smooth the sides of the clipped nails.

These are the minimum things you need for a basic level of care.

Shower every morning, use the gloves with the body wash, and once you are dry and you've brushed your teeth, use the Stridex, wait ten minutes, then use the A.M. moisturizer (with the SPF). At night, use the night cream.

You don't need to use the brands I listed. They are just a place to start, ones I have personally used and liked, but they are not the only ones. If you want to know more about building a skincare routine, /r/Skincare_Addiction has great resources in its sidebar. What works for one person may not work for another, so read, experiment, and build your routine.

Take some pride in how you present yourself and care for yourself. You owe it not only those around you, but to yourself, to do better and be the best you can be.

Ok, here we go.

The Bridge: Looks OK to me, but i replaced the saddles (roller saddles) and the trem block on my Pacifica because of preference. You can remove and disassemble the bridge and clean everything (steel wool and vinegar work well) or leave it and it will be fine.

The Nut: It should not drastically alter the action, because any nut you have on your axe should be filed to the exact height that is ideal for your setup. Tusq, bone, roller nuts, etc are all fine and well but IME, a properly filed, smoothed and lubed plastic nut has not hindered my tuning stability at all. YMMV.

The Frets: The edges look ok to me but if you want to shape them a bit more you need a (preferably) 3 sided file. Be very careful and move very slowly as to not cause damage. As for polishing the frets, you can use steel wool (Tape your pups!) or very fine grit sandpaper carefully. I personally have found that a fingernail buffer (like https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00X68IVGS/ref=sspa_mw_detail_6?psc=1)
works best for me. Can find those anywhere you go. I've also seen techs use pencil erasers to polish frets.

The Fretboard: If a fretboard gets too dry, it will shrink and will cause fret sprout. I don't recommend lemon oil (some do) but prefer either mineral oil or the Dunlop Fingerboard Oil. Don't overdo it, once a year or twice if its really dry is all you need. Over oiling is just as bad as it being too dry.

Pickups: I personally (some may hate me for this) dont believe pickup swaps make any improvement on your sound that an EQ pedal can not. Plus, an EQ pedal has many more uses and is quite versatile. That said, do what makes you happy so you love your sound, but always take a look at your amp first.

Pickguard: Replacement pickguards almost never line up to the existing holes. It is what it is, just drill small pilot holes before adding the screws.

Sanding: Yes, i think 100 is too course and youll end up removing more material than you should. I use 220/320 followed by 600 and lastly 1000. This is also subjective but IME, 100 will create uneven spots and headaches.

All in all, the best advice is to get as many different opinions as you can as everyone has different techniques and ways of doing things. Get all the opinions you can and find which ones make the most sense to you for your specific project and end goal. Also, have fun.

Oh that magnetic scrubber sounds so cool, what a good idea! I only clean my pieces with ISO and salt once a week, but love keeping my bowl downstems clean after each sesh, makes such a difference in how clean the hit is for me! Also, I’ve spent many days where I’d run dry, and use a small dull knife, pair of tweezers, and/or various other tools and scrape so much kief out of my grinder I can’t believe it every time.

After the ingrown toenail tool discovery, I started looking at everything with a new set of eyes. Anything had potential to be the next best weed tool haha. My overall essentials are a small natural bristle dense makeup brush, the toenail too, tweezers, knife, standard straight pokers, Bobby pins, actual pipe cleaner, alcohol wipes, teaspoons with fun designs, mini shovels, and other stainless steel tools made for dermatology or ear cleaning.

Toenail tool from my kid was actually in a set: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DVJVDKP/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_8AmPZTaSDILqt

Here is how to turn it into a good experience:
Put all the minis he has now aside with the box. You guys will fix everything later.

Get these 4 things (most of them you got in your house anyway):

a) A diagonal cutter for elecronics for 3-5$ to perfectly remove models from the sprues
b) a small metallic nail file to deburr said models
c) the best plastic glue in the world the needlehead is easy to use even for a 10y old and will make sure not to soak the models in glue
d) DE Skysplinter set to "start from 0"

Now all you do is drop his ass off in a Games Workshop store. Tell them what happened. Buy this Skysplinter set there and they will be thrilled to help him build it in store. They'll teach him how to hold the tools, how to correctly deburr the models, how to glue and position them the right way.
Now your son will be ready to rework his Start Collecting. The same store will help him out with messed up or missing parts. Chances are high he will have enough spare parts from your skysplinter set anyway.

He'll even have a full 500 points army.
The typical army sizes are: 500p, 750p, 1000p, 1500p and 1850p.

500 points is good enough for the first couple of months (think 3-6 months) before it starts to get boring. His list should be something like:

HQ:
Archon (Agonizer, Shadow field, Splinter Pistol)
Troops:
10 Kabalyte Warriors (1 Shredder, 1 Dark Lance)

  • Raider (Dark Lance)
10 Kabalyte Warriors (1 Shredder, 1 Dark Lance)
  • Raider (Dark Lance)
    Fast Attack:
    3 Reaver Jetbikes

This is a really good start anyway and he can develop his army into any desired direction from here.
The Gangs of Commorragh set for example might be nice addition from there on. It is dirt-cheap and will catapult his army to 750 points. If he happens to like Hellions and jetbikes of course. Do not buy something like this right away, let him paint and play with his 500 points first. This is more like a 1 year plan.

I also use little things like: tips, glue, cuticle nippers/tools, cuticle oils, alcohol wipes, acetone, etc. I hope this helps! Please note, I have been doing my nails for a long time and I have built up my collection over the years. It is expensive from the start, but always remember, everything will last you longer then the salon because you’re only doing your nails once every few weeks. Good luck!!! 😁😁😁

u/indigentclockmaker · 2 pointsr/Gunpla

I use this set of nail files and have been very happy with the results (starting with 200/220 grit). It usually take my time but the spongy files are great for curved surfaces. Just wait longer than you think the glue needs (at least a few hours) and sand lightly and you’ll hopefully see some better results. Good luck!

u/HlVNTI1JyFYsTEoirQp4 · 11 pointsr/EDC

I daily carry a GORUCK GR1. I chose this pack because of how ridiculously overbuilt it is. Prior to getting the GR1, I carried less and I generally still couldn't go more than 6 months at best without ripping or destroying my packs. I also like that it doesn't have much built in organization. I prefer to create my own organizational system rather than use the one mandated by the pack. This is the primary reason I chose this over similar high quality options such as the Tom Bihn Synapse 25.

Also, I know there is a serious lack of cool hacking tools. Unfortunately I am currently in a more defensive than offensive cybersecurity position, so I don't really carry a lot of stuff around with me like I used to when I was red team.

On the front you can see that I have a Grimloc biner in case I need to attach anything to my pack. I also have a Gonex water bottle pouch and a large water bottle. On the back of the pack I have a pouch with my EDC Zebralight on the shoulder strap for easy access while wearing the ruck.

u/[deleted] · 6 pointsr/RedditLaqueristas

Any super fine glass file, filing in only one direction instead of back-and-forth. It reduces splits and peeling, and the super fine grit feels much smoother than file made with sandpaper (or whatever that is).

Like these.

A also have a multi-sided nail buffer for smoothing, if I need it. This is my favorite; you move from one pad to the next, and end up with shiny as glass nails. I much prefer that on my off days than painting my nails clear. ;)

u/AngelicBabyGirl · 1 pointr/randomactsofamazon

I love spring, but right now it is super gloomy, cold and not very nice out. I just want to go outside so I can frolic and plant flowers! :3

Item! I would love to get to start up my new hobby!

u/The_Stapher · 2 pointsr/Gunpla

Someothers and I just had a convo about this not to long ago. Here's a link for the thread.

The TL;DR for it though is we found out that these Nano Glass nail files are essentially the same thing for a fraction of the price. Just last night I used a "Mr. Clean Sheet" I had laying around which is essentially just a Melamine Sponge and works to "matte" the shine. You can get a single pack of the "Mr. Clean Sheets" at your typical store (Target, Walmart, etc.) for about $6 USD a pack.

This whole set up works virtually identical and is a fraction of the cost. I hope this helps out! :)

u/needmorepolish · 3 pointsr/RedditLaqueristas

From what I have heard, the crystal glass nail files are better for a variety of reasons but the main one being that it is so much finer of a grit. This is the first time I've purchased any and I already love them! It filed and shaped my nails quickly. I've also heard that they last much longer than metal or emery board files. I have heard of people getting them from Sephora and Ulta but I got these off amazon. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003X9E236/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

On the subject of nail files, crystal (glass) nail files last forever. I just recently bought this set on Amazon after having a crystal file I'd had for the last like, ten years. That one is still in perfect condition, but I wanted a bigger one for my feet. All you do is wash them every now and then. They're also gentler than emery boards.

u/GundamWang · 1 pointr/RedditLaqueristas

Thanks to both! I use one like this, and I just noticed it says Emeryl file material. So I guess I haven't been using metal at all.

stop biting your nails. Trust me, once you do, there's all sorts of things you can do with your nails.

I suggest buying a metal nail file like this to take off the high points before you chew them off.

u/baddox · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

The MEHAZ 660 is reasonably priced, cuts great, and will probably last forever. I've had it for a year.

u/mike413 · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

I also bought a Seki Edge over a year ago. It is the best I've used, and hasn't shown problems yet.

I actually bought the toenail clipper and the fingernail clipper, but use the toenail clipper exclusively. It is larger, but you get more leverage and it ends up being more precise for me.

Other nail clippers are cheaper, but end up being disposable.

Scissors may not be the best idea, it can be hard to control them. I'd recommend a traditional nail clipper, like these. If you use em on your toes, remember to clip straight across to avoid ingrown toenails.

long distance or not - get good clippers. unless you're willing to invest filing time - which i am not. good clippers give you a good clean cut, no need to file.

these are decent.

u/ISwearImAGirl · 1 pointr/SkincareAddiction

Some more tips for brittle nails: never cut your nails, only file them down. Use a glass nail file, not metal, and file in one direction (no sawing back and forth). Together with keeping your nails and cuticles moisturized, you should have the strongest nails you can. This is exactly what I'm starting, because I also have issues with very weak, brittle nails that are very prone to cracking, splitting and separating.

u/defenestrate_ · 2 pointsr/LifeProTips

Alternately you can spend a few extra bucks on a "Clip & Catch" pair of clippers.

u/Seileach · 1 pointr/Gunpla

I've seen mentions that the raser look very similar to glass nail files you can find on Amazon. Proceed with caution.

Edit: it seems the previous owner has bought both and concluded they're almost identical.

u/Tourney · 1 pointr/RandomActsofMakeup

Those were some of the ones /r/redditlaqueristas recommended, so you're good to go! The two that they recommended most were that set and this one, which I got because I liked the idea of having three different sizes.

For anybody wondering if they have a fake, on the fake files the grit wears off. Fakes are basically glass with some sort of grit sprayed onto them that doesn't stay on permanently. I'm not sure how the real deal is made, but they last you forever. (Just be careful not to drop them on hard surfaces, they are glass after all!)

u/vitriol78 · 15 pointsr/BuyItForLife

I have the same problem, my nails are incredibly hard to cut.

After breaking 3 different nail clippers in a day, I found these: seki nail clipper

Made of stainless steel and very sharp, they really cut your nail instead of tearing it like most nail clippers.

I’ve had mine (normal nailclipper, not the toenail clipper) for about 6 years now and still looks and works as new.
