I have been seeing a lot of basstop shell replacement reviews going around but not alot of eXtremerate ones. It is my first time changing the joycon shells and after a week of research and reading i decided on the extremerate ones. In short, i would give a 8/10 for its good quality shell.

  1. The guide by them is relatively easy to follow, i replaced my shell while watching the video and paused at every step, making sure that i did not miss anything. the only con is that there is an error in the video about the ribbon being inserted the wrong way. they did clarify it at the text but people like me dont usually read the text when watching the video. (-1)

  2. Purchase a triwing screwdriver. The replacement set i got from extremerate comes with a set of screwdrivers and they suck.. without a proper triwing tool, you will easily strip your screws. I bought mine from a local electronics store and they worked like a charm. For the size of the triwing, i used Y00 or 1.5. (-1)

other than the 2 faults, i find the shell really well made and they fit really well and other tips you could use are:

    a) make sure you have good lighting

    b) if you have strong arms, tone it down. the screws are really small and just a teeny bit of strength is sufficient to hold them in place

    c) take note of the ribbon orientation, dont put them in the wrong way, if not they wont work

    d) double check every time you tighten to make sure u did not miss a step, otherwise, you will have to unscrew them again.

    e) the battery holder isnt tight fitting, and the original is also held in place with a double sided tape. i used a double sided tape to make sure they stay in place, otherwise the battery might move around when u are using them

    f) for the finishing touch, change the internal firmware on the joycons to show up as any color on the switch.

Good catch with 2.4g vs. bluetooth, I always forget about that.

The biggest differences between each 8bitdo line are aesthetics and features such as rumble, analog sticks, motion controls, triggers and turbo:

  • The SN30 is a base model that only features a d-pad, face buttons and a set of L and R buttons on the top. It resembles a SNES/SFC controller and works over Bluetooth and USB-C.

  • The SN30 Pro takes the SN30 form factor and adds rumble, analog sticks, motion controls, turbo, and a second set of triggers. Still works over Bluetooth and USB-C.

  • The NS30 Pro 2 has all the features of a SN30 Pro controller with a slightly different layout. The second set of shoulder buttons are set inside the first set.

  • The SN30 Pro+ is a SN30 Pro controller in a form factor that adds grips similar to a Sony Dualshock controller. Still works over Bluetooth and USB-C.

    Features

It all boils down to what features you want. The SN30 is a great replacement for a stock SNES/NES controller and is about $10 US cheaper than the other models. The Pro and Pro+ will also work great with the NES Classic, and will allow you to play PS1 games that require analog sticks.

    Aesthetics

8bitdo has a number of color variants for each of their lines that have no effect on how the controllers operate. The SN30 GP line are a set of SN30 controllers stylized like the original Game Boy Pocket line. There's no functional difference between a SN30 and SN30 GP controller other than how it looks. The SN30 Pro line has two options: One that matches the original Game Boy and another that looks like a U.S. Super Nintendo controller.

And there's the newer NS30 Pro2, which has an NES option that should match well with the NES Classic.

    ---

For me, I like the SN30 Pro because it's a good compromise with the SNES controller form factor combined with modern features. The triggers aren't great for modern games, so I only really use my SN30 Pro for emulators and retro-style games.

I already own a set of Dualshock 4 controllers, so I didn't see a need to have grips on my 8bitdo controller. But if I were using an 8bitdo controller as my daily controller, I would strongly consider getting the SN30 Pro+ for the added grips.

8bitdo doesn't do a great job at describing the differences between each of their controller lines. Some sort of feature grid would be extremely helpful.

Each joy con can act as it's own individual controller for Mario Kart.
They are quite small but for children I'm sure it'll be fine, but I'd recommend getting Joycon grips.
Something like this to use the controller as normal but with more grip, or something like this works great for setting the controller to gyro so you steer by turning the wheel just like the Wii version.

u/Saxophobe · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

Yeah, it's fairly normal that the wheels are always sold separately rather than with the console (it was the same on the WiiU version).
I'm kinda glad though in a way, because it means we're free to choose the styles we like best. For example, I managed to find some really good ones that even show the lights on the front panel...

www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01NCZO2LK

I'll let you know what they're actually like when they arrive, as I only just ordered them. But they looked kinda better than the orignal ones anyway. (Not sure how you will tell which player is connected on the original ones, but these ones sort of solve this problem), and they look kinda cool aswell.

(sort of reminds me of Night-Rider for some reason). Anyone else remember that show? (or perhaps that's just me showing my age) -DOH!! Personally though I don't think you can ever get too old to love Mariokart though, so I'm not ashamed of admitting it!

u/MiRiHi · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

Really depends on whether you need gyro controls and/or HD rumble. If you need either of those i would suggest just sticking to the joy-cons in the grip and save up for the pro controller. Otherwise, there are great wired options out there. Most notably the controllers from PowerA and HORI. Also personally I think the PowerA controller looks better than the pro controller but that's just my opinion.

If you play a lot of 2D games I'd recommend this controller. Probably the best 2D controller for the switch and has thumbsticks for 3D games.

u/DrPepper86 · 0 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

Not sure it's something you've considered (or have any interest in), but you can replace the control stick unit with a kit from Amazon. They're pretty inexpensive, come with all the parts you need, and the entire process doesn't take much more than, like, 20 minutes with an iFixit guide. I strongly recommend it if you want it done quick (though, of course, it will pooch your warranty, so there's that to consider as well)

u/German_Waffles · 0 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

Bit late to the party, but how about those sweet joy cons that are coming out? I really want a pair but why oh why nintendo would you put GREY SHOULDER STRAPS ON THE YELLOW CONTROLLER AND SELL THE OTHER STRAPS FOR ADDITIONAL $$$.

And here I thought you were the good guys :(

u/Infinity499 · 2 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

Although we can always order the neon JoyCon on their own, but they're the other way around... Probably best to wait for special editions I think (also skins will probably look better on a grey background)

u/PixeledBrain · 2 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

Im getting my switch in about a week and a half, so i've started to look for accesories, and I think i need some help :P

Initially ill be getting Mario Kart, so im going to buy the official Joy Con Wheel x2 thing.

I was also going to buy a carrying case, and I saw this one, which looked nice.

The last thing I was going to buy for now was a screen protector, since i've heard they can get scratched easily when placing/removing the console from the dock, so I was thinking of buying this one. I also saw a Hori screen protector, but it has horrible reviews (Mostly complaining about it unsticking at the bottom of the switch because of the heat when being docked).

So, are these good choices or should I buy some other one instead?

Also, ill probably end up buying a controller, however, I find the pro controller to be too expensive, so I was thinking of buying the Hori one which is much more affordable, but is it any good? Are there any other good controllers? And I was looking at Hori stuff, so I stumbled upon the Playstand, and the game case. Are they worth buying?

Sorry if this comment is too big, im very hyped for the Switch, and I dont want to ruin my experience with bad accesories =)

EDIT: I forgot to ask, Is a big SD Card worth it? How much space would you recommend if it is?

u/pikachuuuuu · 4 pointsr/GirlGamers

Here's the shells:

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07VHCRH5Y/

Also here's the tool kit I used, and I absolutely recommend getting this too because I can't imagine doing this without having all the extra little tools for making it easier.

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XP8FMM2/

The texture feels nice, they're kind of a soft touch type plastic. It scratched a bit around the screws in the back because the screws the Joy Cons are made with feel like they're made of friggin chalk or something and strip super easily so there was some screwdriver slippage that caused a bit of damage. Not really noticeable though.

u/moosebaloney · 3 pointsr/AndroidGaming

If you're interested in a Playstation layout controller, I recently started using the 8BitDo SF30 Pro (or SN30 Pro) for emulation on the Android. It works PERFECTLY with Rules of Survival. I also opted for the phone clip which has come in SUPER handy.

u/Ssjshafted · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

I want to get a switch in may, planning on playing mostly smash bros and maybe botw later on, I want to get a separate controller because I've played smash on a friend's switch and i dont like how joycons play, the gamecube and pro controller are good though. So here's the question -

Should I get a wired pro controller or wireless third party (cuz i'm broke). I usually sit about four feet away from my tv when playing solo but if there's people over then its like 10-15 feet. I don't usually have people over so that might change, here's the two options basically:

Wired Pro Controller

Wireless Third Party Controller

u/largepanda · 3 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

As someone who has a Pro Controller, and was reluctant to buy one, I have two very strong opinions on it:

  1. The Pro Controller is the most overrated accessory ever, the Joycons in the grip are perfectly fine.
  2. The Pro Controller is an immensely nice controller and basically a mandatory accessory, even to me, who drastically prefers a PlayStation-shaped controller and doesn't like the Xbox stick layout.

    ----
If you already have an existing controller you're happy with (Xbone, PS3, PS4, Wii U Pro Controller, others), check out the 8BitDo Wireless USB Adapter, which will allow you to use it with the Switch.

There's several third-party options for Switch controllers, including:

u/lostinthewoods466 · 2 pointsr/StardewValley

You can purchase them anywhere they should be on amazon.

Sorry I’m in the UK currently if you were looking for an American link but they should be pretty easy to find. Pretty damn pricey tho

u/Keezus1234 · 1 pointr/Switch

I think it’s worth it. I have 2 and they’re amazing especially for Mario Maker 2 and Smash Bros. If you don’t care about not having rumble there are some knockoff ones with rave reviews on Amazon that are half the cost.

I got these around May. They still work after lots of Mario Kart and Overcooked. I love the feel of them. I think all the ones that look like these on Amazon are made with generic parts, so they're probably all going to be exactly the same or close. The buttons are still a little mushy but a lot more clicky than the straps. The button is just a solid piece of plastic that pushes the joycon button. I don't think you can get much better than that.

What peripherals? That Mario Kart wheel thing?

Does anyone have this controller for the switch as well as the official pro controller? If you do, how do they match up? Which is more responsive, comfortable, etc?

u/TemptedTemplar · 2 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

The Pokken controller is fantastic for playing, but not for building. The lack of joystick makes using the cursor impossible.

Rather then that snes looking one, Id go for a 8bitdo device.

wired SN30

wireless SN30

wireless N30 (more colors, different shape)

Better build quality, actual customer support for any issues, and they here is a bunch of colors on the horizon, plus a whole line of controllers with grips. but those aren't out yet.

u/goodnightgoth · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

There are both wireless and wired version of the gamecube controller for the switch. My personal favorite to use is this one which comes in a variety of colors, but is wired.

If you're looking for versatility, go with a pro controller.
If you're on a budget or don't want to spend as much, go with the gamecube controller.

Although, there are certain gamecube controllers for switch that are compatible with pretty much every game, because of the addition of the extra button, the one I linked is one of these.

This is for the shells, make sure you order the right one. I would strongly recommend that you buy the D-Pad shell for the left JoyCon, it's an incredibly positive difference; I can't even put it in words how much better it is:

I never use the joycons unless I have to use them for Mario Party or if I'm playing Pokemon LGE in docked mode. I would recommend getting a couple of pro controllers, but if that's too much money you can get a couple of wired controllers for about half the price. I would recommend either one of these:

u/XHaunt23X · 2 pointsr/casualnintendo

These two controllers have worked great with me. I haven’t had any issues with the wired Luigi controller and is one of my favorites, although it’s mostly because I grew up with the gamecube and it feels more comfortable then the nearly identical modern controllers. The black ones I got two of, and one of them did end up getting tossed out because the A button got stuck. The second one has been a charm though. Either way they were both cheaper and has so far lasted longer then both pairs of my joycons. Even though the A button getting stuck sucked, it still lasted about a three months, which is about the same time my joycons became unusable.

u/SquirtleGetsWet · 5 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

i bought these for this exact reason and really like them. It's a bit annoying to have to take them out of the sleeves for the mini-games where you hold the joycons vertically, but helps immensely with comfort

Is it really that cheap in the US?

Not being egotistical or anything, but the current cheapest I can find of it here in the UK is £119.99 on amazon :/ no luck on eBay and CEX has next to none in stock through any of their stores online :(

If so I wonder if the controller is as valuable as it is because it’s the current only pro controller with a fixed dpad or because it genuinely is super rare (and not artificially rarer due to scalpers flooding the market ala amiibo and nes Classic) die to low print numbers?

(I have the controller from back at launch btw, can confirm the dpad is superior to the OG and splatoon controllers.)

If the themes one is a Nintendo brand controller, just the graphical design.

(Like this or this)

If it's not Nintendo branded, then any number of things, weight, construction, nfc, hd rumble, wired, d-pad anything might be different.

Unfortunately some of these also have the red corner trade dress on the box, but should always have a third party brand logo somewhere on the front and say something like "licensed from Nintendo" somewhere.

I found the shell replacement and joystick replacement from Amazon. The shell is from eXtremeRate. The sticks is from a random distributor. The quality of the shell is fantastic. It has a slight rubberized texture. The sticks feels clickier and are stiffer than Nintendo's. No drift.

There are imitation Pro controllers on amazon for like half the price of the pro controller. It’s basically the same thing minus the Nintendo logo and amiibo scanner.

Looks like a referral link. It forwards to Amazon via another site

Do not buy.

Edit: here's the direct link. Price is $67, only a couple bucks cheaper than Amazon's normal of $70

I picked up a SNES style 8Bitdo SN30 Pro controller and I will no longer play any games based aroudn the DPAD without it. Its so damn perfect for MM2. (tried out Hollow Knight last night with it too and its great) For everything else I use a pro control.

You can buy the red/blue neon alts, the green/pink neon alts, grey, neon yellow and Mario red (Japanese import only).

The original variation neons are the only ones you can't get outside a bundle or console purchase (unless you buy them individually, also an option for some).

Some of these are less obtainable in different locations, but they exist.

u/TheFunktupus · 0 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

Just found one on Amazon.

Nintendo Joy-Con (R)-Gray https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MR5R96K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_fwZDCbWFKR9AR

It’s gray, but it is proof they exist.

u/iceynyo · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

Only once you can find them sitting on shelves. If they're already selling out there's no reason to try and increase sales by offering a discount.

Which is why you can already find some discounts on the gray joycons... they're not as popular.

I meant this layout but with a different hue of red, and without the green cross obviously. I don't think anyone produces them, you would have to paint them yourself.
Just a black pro controller but with red accents on grips and the back.
I don't understand why anyone hasn't thought of it yet.

u/pslyman · 2 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

They're actually $20 on Amazon right now, and $25 on Walmart.

If it is, you got caught off guard, this is the Red Left/Blue Right, the Neon joycons that came with the base console is Blue Left/Red Right.

People that are looking specifically for this colour combination can't get it any other way.

PowerA has a wired Pro Controller for the Nintendo Switch for 24.99$ but it doesn't have motion controls or Amiibo support. PowerA also recently made some Wireless Enhanced Pro Controllers for only around 49.99$ (44.99$ with the one I'm linking you here) that have motion controls. I don't know if you knew this already or not OP but you can pick up the Right Joy-Con and left Joy-Con separate for around 49.99$ (sometimes lower), here is a link to buy the right Joy-Con

You could also try to wait for Black Friday or Cyber Monday to pick up some new Joy-Cons or a Pro Controller.

What's the difference between this PowerA wired controller and this same controller *plus*

From what I saw in the box it's just the extra controller caps and 2 extra feet on the cable, but wanted to know if that was it

(I mean call it plus just for the caps?)

u/rainbowterfly · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Nintendo does have a neon yellow set, not sure if there's a difference in these and the Pikachu one.

You can try:

  1. Updating controllers (Free)

  2. Using [contact cleaners] (https://www.amazon.com/WD-40-Specialist-Electrical-Contact-STRAW-SPRAYS/dp/B00CMT9TFY/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1518364971&sr=1-1-catcorr&keywords=contact+cleaner) under the rubber cap on the underside of the stick. (Cheap, or free if you have this)

  3. Replacing the stick module yourself (Cheap-ish)
  4. Buying a new right joy-con (relatively expensive, [37] (https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Joy-R-Gray-switch/dp/B01MR5R96K)-50$)

  5. Contacting nintendo (Depends, most times free but has the risk of losing saves, but not 100% if this happens nowadays)
