Metabo Angle Grinder is what you are looking for. It consistently is what welders end up getting for their work. They rely on angle grinders hour after hour every day of their working life. It's going to fail eventually but apparently this one lasts longer than others and if you aren't using it every day of your life then it has a better chance than others to last you the rest of your life.

I'm in no way defending the Hercules tools, but compare apples to apples. Quick look shows current model 11A 4.5" grinders from Dewalt and Makita as:

$139 https://www.amazon.com/DEWALT-Grinder-2-Inch-Paddle-DWE4222N/dp/B018DZ6V2Y/ref=mp_s_a_1_6?keywords=Dwe4222&qid=1570455906&sr=8-6

$147.63 (12A) https://www.amazon.com/Makita-GA4542C-SJSII-Power-Grinder/dp/B00Z5LTO7O/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?keywords=Ga4542c&qid=1570455737&sr=8-1

The Dewalt (and I'd assume the Makita as well, at this price) includes a brake which the Hercules does not have.

Remember that you don't have to spend $200 for an top level angle grinder. I got by with $15 harbor freight cheapy for years before I started taking welding gigs, after which it burned out right quick. The more expensive ones are meant to be used hard, day in and day out. Cutting a few knives out, something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Makita-9523NBH-4-Inch-Angle-Grinder/dp/B0000223J4/ref=sr_1_1?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1415087089&sr=1-1&keywords=angle+grinder at $50 will getcha a long way.

Surface grinder with diamond cup wheel hooked up to a vacuum.
I use the Dewalt DWE46153 hooked up to a shop vac with a bag and hepa filter. Usually you can rent them from HD or other tool rental places

Im sure if you do a little investigative work you'll see theyre all the same seller.

Typically grinders have a big flange and a nut with rings that center the disc and screw on to hold the disc in place. Does your adapter thing not have those? One looks like this, the other is similar but the inside isn't threaded so it just slips down over the shaft.

u/BonerYNot · 5 pointsr/AskEngineers

Pulling it straight up is just going to break the wood, which odds are the wood is so rotted it really doesn't matter. I would personally use a cut-off wheel on an angle grinder or something similar to slice it. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00006K15B/ref=redir_mdp_mobile

Edit: why can't you remove the whole thing then find a piece of wood to hammer through the wooden dowel so it pops out?

We have been using these for years: Link

The units have since been discontinued, but we have a supplier that sells them for $20CAD. Apparently they still make batteries for them, so this is what we use. Until we run out of the 20 units we bought.

Would this be a quality angle grinder? DEWALT D28499X 7-Inch/9-Inch 5.3-Horsepower Large Angle Grinder https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00009YUHX/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_PlmGzbW0Y9V4B

One problem I would see is control. Power tools have a learning curve and tend to "run away" particularly if you are doing something delicate. So any time I am removing material, I would prefer to do it by hand to avoid that situation. Caveat: this experience is not based on work with miniatures, but in other areas.

What I have used for years is a flexible shaft grinder. The big name is Foredom. But those are spendy. I have a harbor freight knock off that has served me well for years. The foot pedal speed control alone is worth it. The dremel you link to is variable speed, but its a wheel control on the tool. I dont care for having to stop to adjust the speed

As an example (there are heaps of them out there. relabled versions of the same knock off):

AFAIK, this is what a Metabo made in Germany looks like, the base models are all one color plastic and are made by slaves in some Asian hell hole.

u/nothing_911 · 1 pointr/Welding

i see, i would try to make the jump to a 5inch with a handle when you can, more stable and powerful, and you get much more out of a disc. if i were buying a new one i would get something like
https://www.amazon.com/Makita-GA5010Z-5-Inch-Angle-Grinder/dp/B001ASDTZO/ref=sr_1_4?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1478729725&sr=1-4&keywords=makita+5+inch+grinder

im not a akita guy but they make a hell of a grinder, for the price.
