Metabo Angle Grinder is what you are looking for. It consistently is what welders end up getting for their work. They rely on angle grinders hour after hour every day of their working life. It's going to fail eventually but apparently this one lasts longer than others and if you aren't using it every day of your life then it has a better chance than others to last you the rest of your life.

The Dewalt (and I'd assume the Makita as well, at this price) includes a brake which the Hercules does not have.

Remember that you don't have to spend $200 for an top level angle grinder. I got by with $15 harbor freight cheapy for years before I started taking welding gigs, after which it burned out right quick. The more expensive ones are meant to be used hard, day in and day out. When I was a kid I saw my father cleaning some transmission parts using the bench grinder. Well, in my infinite wisdom I figured such a device could also cut my fingernails much faster than a traditional nail clipper. So I proceeded to stick my finger on the spinning grinding wheel.

Luckily my father noticed and as soon as my finger touched it one time (causing it to *jump* off the grinding wheel) he switched it off and began teaching me a lesson in wtf I could have done to myself by grinding away a half inch or so cut into a steel clutch plate.

Had my finger gotten stuck between the wheel and the body of the grinder, it probably would have been ripped off.

Typically grinders have a big flange and a nut with rings that center the disc and screw on to hold the disc in place. Does your adapter thing not have those? One looks like this, the other is similar but the inside isn't threaded so it just slips down over the shaft.

Pulling it straight up is just going to break the wood, which odds are the wood is so rotted it really doesn't matter. I would personally use a cut-off wheel on an angle grinder or something similar to slice it. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00006K15B/ref=redir_mdp_mobile


Edit: why can't you remove the whole thing then find a piece of wood to hammer through the wooden dowel so it pops out?

AFAIK, this is what a Metabo made in Germany looks like, the base models are all one color plastic and are made by slaves in some Asian hell hole.

Have you considered air powered tools? There's of course the downside of needing a compressor, but the tools themselves tend to be way cheaper, durable, and easier to maintain than electric counterparts. (Also they don't bind in as dangerous a manner if you stall the motor.)

i see, i would try to make the jump to a 5inch with a handle when you can, more stable and powerful, and you get much more out of a disc. if i were buying a new one i would get something like
