I own a vintage shop and style people all the time in different eras. accessories can make or break a vintage look. I would suggest investing in a fedora. They can get kinda expensive, but you can find something online thats cheaper. I would definitely go to a shop though to figure out your head size and what styles fit the best.

With someone your size, do not wear pleated pants. this was the style of the 40s but they will only add bulk. Suspenders were common, but again, this might accentuate your stomach. High waisted pants were the style, but I would stick to pants that are more current. What you can do is get a nice suit, wear a classic french cuff shirt, cuff links, fedora, and some awesome shoes. like two toned spectators or wing tips. Socks weren't really crazy back then, but you should still invest into a couple cool pairs of socks

If you have a local vintage shop, swing by there to grab the cufflinks (cheaper) and maybe even a pair of cool shoes. Also, they might know where you can find a hat. It's hard to find vintage hats that fit an average man. everything was smaller back then. hats, shoes, gloves, jackets......That's why you will most likely get a new one.

hope that helps. I love Etsy because they have a huge vintage section at great prices. oh, the link shoes what 40's jackets looked like. double breasted.

anyway, good luck and have fun!

EDIT: forgot, pocket squares or classy and fun. you should be able to find one at a vintage shop for like 10 bucks. a women's small silk scarf can be a great substitution.

u/Encelados242 · 4 pointsr/woodworking

Glubot - it looks funny to a non woodworker, but it is an amazing thing to have around the shop. It makes glue ups about 100 times more enjoyable. Maybe get some silicone brushes to go with it.

Magnifying Lamp - a great addition to any shop. Be sure to get one with a long arm like this one so he can mount it behind his bench and still be able to use it.

Incra Rulers - these are the best damn rulers you'll ever use. The slots make consistent marks that are very reliable. A 12 inch T ruler would be best, but this one is also cool.

Wool Socks - if you live in a cold climate and his shop isn't heated, this would be an awesome gift. I got these socks specifically and they are awesome. Me feet never overheat, but they keep me very warm and are very comfortable. This is a damn good deal actually... I might order these now.

I just want to make a few comments on an overall well done post.

  1. Don't overpay for shoe trees. At least 3x-4x a year Men's Warehose and/or Jos A Bank have a buy 1, get 2 free on anything in the store. I buy all cedar shoetrees from Jos A Bank for about $5 each when they run these deals. I usually pick up 6 at a time.

  2. Insoles - YES. Insoles are great. I've been using them for years. Here is what I can tell you about them. There are mainly two types of insoles, both of which you want to keep on hand. Secondly, always keep 2 of each type lying around so that you can rotate them and not over use them. The first type are slightly thicker, yet flexible insoles. These are meant for Running shoes, athletic shoes, anything causual. Here are the one's I use: Here. For dressy shoes, I use these. Make sure that when you buy them you keep them in the same shoe for 16 hours so that they can conform properly to you feet. By using good insoles, you will notice less foot fatigue and less smelly shoes :)

  3. If you are like me, no matter how good your hygiene is, you feet will always sweat. Considering I live in Miami and my feet's tenancy to sweat no matter what, I almost ALWAYS have to wear socks. However, there are some good options here. First, you can try finding no show socks, see here: Amazon. Regarding No Show socks, don't be stupid and buy white. The idea is that they don't show, so buy a mix colors so that they can match to the color shoe you will be wearing. Also, keep in mind that there is a HUGE difference between No Show socks and Low Cut socks. Low Cut Sock are appropriate for athletic training and such, but never anything beyond that. The second option is a new option that I haven't yet used but is sitting in my closet waiting for me. It's called Not Socks. It is essentially a sock-type liner that goes around a paper-thin insoles that they send you. This sock-liner can then be removed and machine washed. These things seem so cool. Can't wait to try them out.

  4. Lastly, always keep your shoes looking nice and clean, they will last MUCH longer. If you haven't already, invest in a shoe care kit. I went on eBay and bought a vintage shoe care box then went to Johnston Murphy and bought various dyes, cloths, and brushes. I routinely polish my shoes. Once a year I will take my shoes in to an experienced shoe-smith and have him replace worn soles, and do a heavy cleaning and polish. One word of advice, be careful with allowing your shoe-smith to re-tan your shoes... when he does that (at least in my case) it's the beginning of the end for your shoes. If you take care of them properly, they will never need to be re-tanned.

    Good luck boys.

I'm gonna spam my own fashion sense, I hope you like some of what I like ;p

If you want dresses, I would recommend one size fits all dresses off Amazon. Then you don't have to worry about cups that are not filled by breasts. I really love Sakkas brand, which you can find on Amazon. I have this, for example, and the top part is stretchy so it's basically one size fits all: https://www.amazon.com/Sakkas-103141-Adara-Batik-Dress/dp/B00K1ML5JW/ref=sr_1_33?ie=UTF8&qid=1482827864&sr=8-33&keywords=sakkas+dress

Or any cheap $10-$15 dress from a place like Forever 21 is so poorly designed that it is effectively one size fits all.

Here are some cute colorful socks:

https://www.amazon.com/HSELL-Colorful-Rainbow-Argyle-Multicolors/dp/B01DSKGV92/ref=sr_1_33?ie=UTF8&qid=1482827534&sr=8-33&keywords=one+size+fits+all+dress

I know a lot of people here also love those cat thigh high socks, like these:

https://www.amazon.com/Kawaii-Cartoon-Animal-Tattoo-Stockings/dp/B0163422D4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1482827633&sr=8-1&keywords=cat+thigh+high

I bought this in the past and I think it's kinda androgynous

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JKF0BNC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Cape coats are technically women's fashion but they're so obscure that I think a lot of people don't know how to gender them

https://www.amazon.com/Artka-Womens-Embroidery-Turn-down-Collar/dp/B00F8A0C5U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1482827761&sr=8-1&keywords=cape+coats

I also really love Mordenmiss jackets (also off Amazon). They're really loose and kinda art smock-y.

I bought this pair of boots a while back and they're really, really nice!

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KAI4GL6/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I've also bought these and I get tons of compliments on them

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00OMUIWD6/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I also have this Forever 21 dino sweatshirt and I can't walk 5 minutes without getting a compliment on it. Unfortunately it isn't sold in stores anymore, but this might help give more ideas of femme clothing.

https://cdnd.lystit.com/photos/2013/10/28/forever-21-blackgold-quirky-dinosaur-sweatshirt-product-1-14521999-527549268.jpeg

I think anything that is a "Women's [traditionally male clothing]" is bound to look fairly androgynous. Like women's button downs, women's sweatshirts and sweatpants, women's leather jackets, etc.

u/ShitPostsRuinReddit · 3 pointsr/Buffalo

If you're here for the long haul, it's your most important purchase. Kamik boots are my personal recommendation for a good value, but there are plenty of good brands. I see you're on foot a lot from other comments. YOU NEED HEAVY INSULATED BOOTS.

Also, the internet is always cheapest. You can make returns for free from amazon at khols.

https://www.amazon.com/Kamik-Mens-Fargo-Boot-Charcoal/dp/B07VZN2Z5D/ref=sr_1_9?dchild=1&qid=1570325289&refinements=p_89%3AKamik&s=apparel&sr=1-9

Edit: Wool socks. Not a blend (except for Merino, which is only better because it can be less itch). W. O. O. L. Good pairs can be $20+ but when it's 0 degrees you're be happy you did it. You don't actually have to wash them every time you wear them (even if that sounds gross).

Snow gets you wet. If you want to be be comfortable, jeans will be your worst freaking enemy. Get some snow pants. Want to be warm and dry? Long johns. Or even flannel under the snow pants.

u/Lazy_sleep · 3 pointsr/BuyItForLife

One of the investments that I have found useful lately is socks and underwear. Really regret not doing this earlier. My current recommendations are [Stance] (https://www.amazon.com/Stance-Classic-Socks-Black-White/dp/B012ZEVZD4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1486317599&sr=8-2&keywords=stance+crew+socks) crew socks. Might not have a lifetime guarantee but they are great quality and much more stylish and confy than darn tough. For underwear: exofficio or duluth underwear. [Exofficio] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00DZLVDAC/ref=yo_ii_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1) are amazingly comfortable and can be found for around $15 if you look for a sale. [Duluth] (http://m.duluthtrading.com/store/mens/mens-underwear/mens-boxers-mens-briefs/76015.aspx) underwear can be found for $18 and will last you forever. They are less comfy than exofficio since they are much thicker and durable. They are both very breathable and you can honestly wear them a couple of days without smell if you really need to... Anyway, other than that I would recommend a decent multitool. I carry the Letherman style CS and use it to open beers and open boxes and the suck. Supper useful and practical.

Last bit of kitchen advise I can think of is to just get 1 good chef knife $35 victronix. 1 good cast iron skillet. And a couple of plates. Do not get a full set as they will become redundant and you'll get lazy about cleaning your dishes...

If there is anything specific you would like to pick my mind on, just let me know.

u/spewbert · 65 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I'm known for wearing bright, colorful socks to my office job each day. If you're spending every day dealing with stuffy, judgmental folks who might hamper your career progress, then you can always second-guess your sock choice, but I know plenty of successful folks who see their socks as the last bastion for playfulness in an otherwise prim-and-proper wardrobe.

Lots of the socks from Soxy and Happy Socks can be found on Amazon, since lots of those brands are filling out their selection with a bunch of generics made in china. Specifically look for HSELL and Deer Mum.

I really like these, and also these. They're the same exact product as many of the big sock retailers are selling, but for a fraction of the price.

u/B10B · 3 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

I bought these from Amazon ($18.50 for 3 pair): [http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HZSBOO6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1]

I had tried numerous pairs from Amazon, the Rack and the like, but these were the best I have owned in terms of covering the top of my foot and never slipping (strong sticky on the back). They are fairly thin, but I have had them since May and wore the hell out of them through the summer and all three pairs are holding up fantastic.

Good luck!

These are the ones the I currently use. They might show a tiny bit above your shoe but they're the most comfortable and least bothersome pair I've used. There's another with excellent ratings on Amazon but they look more like ballet slippers and the sticky pad on the back wouldn't work on some pairs because theirs were placed about a millimeter lower.

I use to wear the Journey's ones and they're decent, especially for the price. Thicket fabric (like I'm looking for) but I did have trouble with them slipping off the heel.

I've been wearing these that have a little gel thing that helps them stick to your heels. They're great, cheap, BUT super thin (hence this post).

These socks are very good to see. Who protects your feet surely the quality of the boutique If you look after your feet, if you like, you will definitely buy these socks again. https://www.amazon.com/PAIR-SHOE-SIZES-ORGANIC-BAMBOO/dp/B079MP52SR/

Hey, I took out some time to have a look. But I gotta say, it is very pricy (3.75 per pair) and the design isn't that extraordinary.

For example look at https://www.amazon.co.uk/Zmart-Patterned-Casual-Socks-8-Pack/dp/B00ZUP9830/ref=pd_sim_194_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=PX7PZSHA7XKSQCVNK2RP
8 pack, with famous paintings: 8.99

I think what's missing is a USP. Like:

  • neon coloured socks?
  • Some crazy design?
  • Special material?
  • Special, niche purpose (Airplane compression socks that look good?)
  • An interesting story to tell (like: £1 per pack goes to a clean water project in Africa or whatever.)

I just don't see any differentiator from the competition and for this the price is not really justifiable.
u/GregoryClarson · 1 pointr/OnlineShopping

One of the best ways to spend time in our era of modern life is to purchase online for a long time in the case of clothing and fashion men, by which both save money. https://www.amazon.com/PAIR-SHOE-SIZES-ORGANIC-BAMBOO/dp/B079MP52SR/

Do the SocklessLook's only go up to shoe size 11? Bummer.

I've been happy with these, which are extremely popular and well reviewed on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MWOETN6/

u/chalupa_lover · 8 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

Same socks for way less and Prime shipping. I got them and they're super comfortable.

Honestly I buy this 8 pack on Amazon and they’ve served me well.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B071114HR9

They’re light and thin, which I kind of like tbh (you get what you pay for) but they’re functional, comfortable, and cheap.

u/fredyendesigns · 1 pointr/Sneakers

I have these http://amzn.to/1RXy5uZ pretty happy with them

u/_Gingy · 3 pointsr/leagueoflegends

Ayy I recognize those green/blue lowcut socks. I bought them earlier in the year off amazon. They are pretty good. They have the grips in the heel too.

u/WorseBlitzNA · 3 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

Piggybacking off your comment, i was recommended these no-show socks from this sub and they have lasted me over a year now.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071114HR9/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

A bit cheaper than the Puma ones and they don't ride up at all. Very comfortable as well

u/YesImMexican · 5 pointsr/Sneakers

Normally myself and other people wear socks like this. I have some nautica pairs that are padded and have a gel strip so they don't slip. Makes it look like you don't have socks on but you do. Hope this helps!

u/DelayedArtisticGuppy · 7 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I just use these. There are better options like wool, but they are more expensive.

This guide will probably do a better job of explaining it than I can.

u/braff_travolta · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

I've bought 2-packs of these Stomper Joes from Amazon and I've been happy with them. The rubber works well and they don't feel flimsy at all.

u/Boerboelwrangler · 3 pointsr/europe

Amazon.

Great if you like the no socks look with summer shoes. They don’t slip down at all, and I walked 13.5 km all over Paris today with them!

u/nouseforasn · 1 pointr/barstoolsports

I found these to be pretty good

u/_uncanny · 1 pointr/running

I run in these. They're very close to running sockless. I find they'll soak up some of the moisture/stink, but mostly create a little breathing space around your feet in your shoes. I also use these for most other shoes I wear that need that sock-less look.

edit: I got a few pair from Target for $8. I just shared the link to show an example instead of trying to describe them.

u/horsif · 11 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

Stomper Joe's were the first I ever bought. They've worked well so far and sit very low on my heel.

Uniqlo has good no-shows. They sit a bit higher than the Stomper Joe's, but still a good buy.

u/fashion_question01 · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

What do you guys think of these socks? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DSKGV92

I bought these on a whim and now I'm concerned whether they're too loud/tacky? I'd like to wear them with nice jeans/chinos and brown boots to work and on dates.

I buy these from amazon and they’re the perfect size for me https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01ELFB7J2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_LgZNAbN9N857G

Looks good, but like the others say, get lower profile socks, like these:

http://www.amazon.com/Calvin-Klein-Mens-Liner-Socks/dp/B007KZ2IHG

Banana Republic sells some too, in white. It'll keep you from stinking up your shoes. Just make sure no one sees them on you :)

No shows ftw. These from Amazon work really well.

> loafer socks' from Amazon

These?

u/ShotgunToothpaste · 2 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

I bought them off Amazon a couple months ago. Don't seem to be sold out.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DSKGV92/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

EDIT: /u/chalupa_lover posted these below a couple min ago

u/heydaveyj · 3 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Was going to say the same thing. I get mine off amazon

u/testudo · 2 pointsr/Sneakers

no-show socks with little heel grippy things so they don't slide down underneath of your foot when you walk.

u/BoPuccini · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

I have generally sweaty feet, sadly. I just rub it onto my foot directly. I also prefer to use no show style socks. My favorite being from Calvin Klein (http://www.amazon.com/Calvin-Klein-Mens-Liner-Socks/dp/B007KZ2IHG), and I just scored some from a TJ Maxx .

u/buddhajones19 · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

No show socks, fam. But you have to get the right ones. These are phenomenal. I spent like 26 bucks and got 12 pairs because I hate how socks look if I'm not wearing boots or a suit. Totally worth it any day, and they actually dont slide off my feet.

u/srs1978 · 2 pointsr/streetwear

If you are willing to go not as cheap, I think these are probably a better deal at $1.67 a pair for 80% cotton socks. The poly socks dry much faster but at some point stink permanently and then you gotta toss them whereas the cotton socks will last for years.

u/WCM3 · 1 pointr/Sneakers

I wear these..

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00MWOETP4/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1474030636&sr=1-1&pi=SY200_QL40&dpPl=1&dpID=31bs0DmgEjL&ref=plSrch

But any no show socks would work. Most people really don't wear these shoes with no socks, that would stink them up. I like this pair because they have silicone on the back heel to keep them from moving..
