I have dozens of tips. Here are a few:

• Wooden hangers. Seriously. Get rid of your shitty-ass wire and plastic hangers, and invest in something decent. You will thank me. Stack them on a shelf when not hanging an item.
  
  
• Only wear the dress clothes when you're working. Take them off as soon as you come home.
  
  
• Have 2 identical pairs of black shoes, and 2 pairs of brown shoes. This lets them "rest" a day between wears.
  
  
• Same above rule, but for black / brown belts. Get good ones.
  
  
• If you find a shirt that looks good, buy 6 of them.
  
  
• As they get dirty, move them to a dry clean category in the closet. Don't wad them up -- hang them up on your wooden hangers.
  
  
• Professional laundry only. The only time it pays to iron is in a hotel room.
  
  
• Tie Grenades are what I call the travel containers for ties. Best for flying with dress clothes.
  
  
• "Shirt Shuttle" is good for having a fresh shirt in your car or carry-on.
  
  
• Polish them shoes, muthafucka.
  
  
• Only buy shoes that cost $100+.
  
  
• Shoe rubbers are a must for the winter salt. A MUST.
  
  
• All watches, tie bars, cuff links, etc. go in their own place. If you take them off not in your house, have a special pocket in your briefcase for them.
  
  
• If you carry a gun (American here), don't do it every day with your suit. It wears holes in your suit pants. Carry in your briefcase.
  
  
• When you get to a hotel, take your shirts out and hang in the bathroom. Turn off the fan, and run hot shower for 20 minutes with the door closed. Some wrinkles will come out.
  
  
• Metal collar stays are cheap and effective. (But get buzzed by TSA magnetic wands, FYI.)
  
  
• Medium starch.
  
  
• Custom-made shirts are best, if you can afford.
  
  
• BOGO at Men's Wearhouse and Joseph A Banks are great for ties, but their suits are cheap. You should have a couple of nicer custom suits if you can afford them.
  
  
• Ditch the closet rack for ties. They are obnoxious because the ties hang over each other. Get one (or more) that mount on the wall in a row.
  
  
• Life is too short to have ties you don't wear. Ditch them.
  
  
• Same goes for shirts. If you don't feel good when you put them on, throw them out.
  
  
• Tie pins put holes in your ties. Use tie bars instead.
  
  
• Cheap black gloves, cheap black scarf, because you'll probably leave them somewhere.
  

Lots of good tips here already! My personal ones are;

• Skinny velvet hangers - I have these from Amazon. They make a surprising difference.
  
• Fold tops, pants, skirts, workout clothes the Konmari way - like this. - you can see everything at a glance and I find it to fit things a bit better.
  
• Underwear and socks - I found out that I was hoarding them like crazy for no reason. I do laundry once a week so I don't need 20 pairs of underwear or 30 pairs of socks. I kept 10 pairs of undies, 5 bras (sports bras not included) and 10 pairs of socks (thicker sport ones, no show, normal...).
  
• If hanging stuff up on hangers, layer them if possible! I hang two or three cardigans on top of one another, I hang one blazer on top of another. Lighter fabric work trousers also get hung in doubles and triples.
  
• If you have an inside door or the back of the wardrobe (some have the rail very forward leaving you some space in the back actually) you can hang up something like this storage to keep your workout clothes/camis/rolled up jeans/scarves in. Might be a bit harder to get to if you have to slide clothes out of the way but worth it. Otherwise of course easily accessible in a door.
  
• Rail organisers as another user shared.
  
• Storage bins with wheels under a bed if possible - easy for shoes or bulky things like sweaters or loungewear/pjs. If they have wheels they're at least easy to pull out.
  
  Other than that, keep an eye on the clothes you have and what you wear. Even if at first assessment you think you need to keep things, if you never wear them you can put them in storage to see if they're missed before donating. Also vacuum bags are great for storing off-season clothes. I just packed the last of my bulky winter wear up last weekend.

If you have a small closet, these hangers save a lot of space. The velvet on them keeps clothes from slipping, but they are super thin compared to regular plastic hangers and save space. There are also hangers where you can hang like 5 pair of pants on 1 hanger which is a great space saver.

Try to de-clutter and sort as much as you can. It'll probably help if you google Konmari and watch some videos of people organizing (not just decluttering) closets.

Like the other person said, it'll help if you put in some additional shelves from the hardware store.

Personally, I prefer clothes folded side by side (Horizontally) instead of stacked on top of each other (vertically) because you can see everything you own and are less likely to mess up the rest of your clothes looking for a specific shirt.

For the top shelf, try to get storage bins that you can label (Ideally big labels so you can see them clearly) . the stuff in here should ideally be things you don't use daily.

Either that or, assuming you have a vacuum, get a vacuum storage bag. you can fit more and it should look less cluttered as well. Just make sure that the bag isn't wider than the depth of your closet otherwise the overhang will make it look bad.

If you want to get real nit picky about this, depending on how tall you are, it might also help to get a small stepstool you can hide in the closet. So you dont get lazy about putting stuff on the top shelf.

Costco sells velvet hangers that are good for lightweight and delicate items like blouses, tanks, camis etc. I also got some good clip hangers there a few years ago. For wood hangers, you don't need to go all out: I got some in Lowe's of all places last year. Ikea has good wood hangers. On Amazon, I like these for heavy duty stuff and these for clip hangers.

I want to expand on this (I think this is what you meant, but I want to make it clear because it's really annoying when it's not right). Blazer hangers are ones where the hanger is thicker at the ends to support shoulder pads, like this. But most of these are made for men's suits, which means they're way too wide for women's blazers. This will cause the hanger to extend way past the shoulders and into the sleeves of the blazer and will create unsightly bulges when worn. Make sure the hanger matches the width of your blazer when laid flat.

I'm a big fan of cedar hangers - I think these are the ones I use. You can pick cedar hangers up relatively cheap on Amazon, although they obviously cost significantly more than cheap plastic ones. MUJI is also an option.

Cedar has a lot of benefits - it's aromatic, it repels moths, absorbs moisture, and wooden hangers are usually made sturdy enough to support heavier items like jackets. The extra width is also good for keeping the shape of the shoulder.

However, all this is opposed by some hanger aficionados.

I'll give you an example: As a Lance Corporal (E-3) amongst 30 others, we were tasked with preparing for a wall locker inspection. We all pressed and prepared our uniforms as we were instructed. Instead of the shitty plastic/wire hangers everyone had, I went and bought the kind that grown men use for their suits. I thought it was appropriate for my Alpha blouse and my Dress Blues (Platoon Honormen were issued these before they were "gear common to all"). My room was spotless. The only "hit" I left out was a fresh Playboy underneath my pillow barely visible. My Corporal walks through before my Sergeant and keys in on that. He's not mad. He knew I left it there intentionally. It was a distractor for my inspector. He realizes I am starting to PLAY the game.

My Sgt walks in and sees the Cpl with the magazine in his hand and asks me who gave me tip about porn. I lied and said, "No one." He goes through my wall locker and finds not only the extra care and attention to detail, but the upgraded hangers and leather uniform shoes, instead of the plastic "corframs." As he's leaving the room satisfied he says, "Don't dream about leaving that skin mag out when Gunny's walking through. You could offer him a beer, though."

Now, bear in mind this is a garrison story, but the principles are relevant once you realize (at least in the Marine Corps) that it's all a game, albeit a precarious one, to be played. You can and should retain your humanity, humor, individuality, creativity and personality.

The punish the many for the actions of a few will be there, but only in the case of incompetent leadership. Grab a straw and suck it up, until such time as you are in charge and capable of shaping the environment for your subordinates. The upper center rack has about 50 visible hangers. There's six different partitions, so let's say 300 hangers (some have less, but are partially hidden by the angle.)

There are some clothing preservation benefits, what with a wider, thicker hanger being beneficial to holding the shape of your items. For me though, it's mostly for the beauty of having every hanger match, and being not having to keep a brooks ocbd on a wire drycleaners hanger.

I bought three packs of these, though I probably only needed two. They're very sturdy and I can't see when I would ever need to replace them.

I don't see anywhere where it would fit in your room, really. It is very bulky and your room is filled with obstacles and corners. Try something like this or this.

Something like these.

They take a lot less horizontal space than plastic hangers. Sweaters shouldn’t be hung, but put on shelves. That’s where the shelf dividers could come in handy. With a divided space, you can have clothes on one side, and stacked shoes on the other. The shelves could be a lot more useful with a bit more organization.

These are not suit hangers; these are regular shirt hangers.

Not sure I've never seen non-removable hangers in a hotel and have stayed in 100s.

If they look non-removable they generally still are - a ring section stays on the rod but the actual hanger part has a little nail bit at the top that slots into the ring like this.

I use these. Button em up and pinch on each side of the waistband like so.

Hanging heavyweight jeans by the belt loops stretches the shit out of em.

I hang probably half my tops to dry, and never get hanger marks. The trick is to use those velvety hangers like this. That way you can easily adjust how the shirt's shoulders/neckline sit on the hanger and it stays put - no stretching or marks. Then I hang them on my shower curtain rod until everything's dry.

Where should I buy suit jacket hangers? I need a thicker hanger to use with my new jacket, in order to prevent shoulder dimples. Its former owner suggested suit jacket hangers, which is what he'd been using with it. Ehh on the wire hangers. I use them for my silk camisoles and cotton button ups since the camisoles don't have much fabric on the shoulders to mess them up, and the cotton shirts are less likely to get damaged as well from them. As long as you aren't hanging up knits, it's not that big of a deal.

That said, I have several types of hangers in my closet. AmazonBasics Velvet Suit Hangers - 50 Pack, Black, ate what u have the most of and ive never had a problem with them. The other type is the super padded stuffed hangers and those are for my delicate dresses but idk if they're worth it.

Been using them for years, mine are from Amazon Basics and I have never had an issue. I also have a bunch from Bed Bath & Beyond that have held up well.

We just tore out cheap, clumsy shelving in our small walk-through closet (5’ x 6’), pulled up the carpet and put down hardwood, painted over the buttercup yellow to a cool grey, put two 50” wide dressers on each side (one side for me, one for my SO), and installed a simple rod and single overhead shelf system on each side. I just received a box of 100 Amazon basics velvet hangers and little 5” deep bins for konmari-ing the dresser and top shelf. I ordered a minimalist ceiling light from Ikea and I’m picking out a tiny little rug for the space too.

It’s still small, with very little space for shoes, no space for handbags, but holy hell. It’s crazy how enamored I feel with just a NORMAL closet. I guess it’s been years and years since I’ve had access to a closet like this — no weird cubbies or awkward attic type spaces, no annoying bifold doors, no making-do with a freestanding clothing rack in the corner of the bedroom. It’s absolute heaven. I’m going to start hanging and folding clothes this weekend and I’m so excited.
