Yes your trainer choice sounds spot on.

  1. maybe, but i would recommend a trainer mat. it is a few mm thick rubber mat that will absorb most vibration and keep your sweat puddles contained.

  2. No, you don't need a special indoor trainer tire. any slick tire will work. Personally, i have a trainer tire that i throw on my bike for the winter months because i would prefer not to put wear on my nicer road tires.

  3. There are a number of throughaxle adapters out there for trainer usage and yes you would need one. Though there are a few different types of threads on through axles. make sure to get the right adapter. If you pull the through axle out you should be able to tell what type of adapter you need based on the type of threads that you have.

  4. No. It will not damage your bike.

  5. It does but some wear on components, but if you completely clean and lube your drive train before putting in trainer miles, the wear is pretty negligible because your bike should stay quite clean.

as other people have said, Zwift is totally worth the $10 a month(you can run it on your phone or a tablet if you want to focus on the TV... personally, zwift keeps me engaged enough that i don't need the TV.), if the trainer doesn't come with a climbing block they can make a substantial improvement on the comfort of riding a trainer.

Do you have a speed sensor (speed-only or speed-cadence) on your bike? If you do, then you can use a program like Trainer Road and their "Virtual Power" - they have power curves on many turbo trainers from relatively inexpensive mag units to more expensive fluid units to actual rollers (side-note - thats an amazing price on those Kreitlers... if I hadn't just gotten my perfectly fine Nashbar set...). It can even directly control "Smart Trainers", like the Wahoo KICKR or take power values directly from a power meter if you decide to upgrade down the line.

Best part is that TR can use things like Sufferfest videos to make your training even more "pleasant".

tl;dr: Yes. Total cost will be trainer + ~$70 (speed sensor + ant+ dongle if needed) + $10/mo (TR subscription).

The block is pretty standard size, but the bike itself is pretty big, 62cm. (I'm 6'3" and most of it is leg.) I also have the aerobars tilted just a few degrees upwards from perfectly level, so the end result is that the tips of them are 42" from the ground.

It may be possible for me to just rig up a little platform that attaches directly to the bars, but I feel like that might actually be too close. When I'm in aero position my hands are right at the end of the bar, and getting my hands over the keyboard in that position means the bulk of the laptop would be well off the front of the bars. My work lappy isn't very heavy, though, so maybe it'd work.

I ended up using the duotrap sensor on my Trek, but you could absolutely go this way...

If you've got a smart phone or a BT laptop, you're likely all set at that point. If not, you'll probably want to pick up an ANT+ dongle for your laptop (and you may want to go this way anyway)

All told? The list runs out to under $150. If you decide you like Zwift, you can always upgrade later on. But this way you're not spending a ton upfront.

You should look into getting some bike trainer tape to protect your tire. Works great.

u/yoinkmasta107 · 1 pointr/minimalism

Something like this would be good if you feel like spending the money.

If looks aren't that important you could build something out of 2x4s and a couple of hooks for a fraction of the price.

lets hope you are a frog :)

btw the ingress player in my town advice the finn

u/Siguros · 1 pointr/pokemongo

I've read that the finn is a great one, mine arrives today so I can report back after some use. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00D8Z9KPU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

u/Answerii · 3 pointsr/bicycling

The Finn is a simple, compact, reliable phone holder.

The Fenix or any of a number of similar mounts can affix a small handheld flashlight to your bars or helmet. You have to take care with helmet mounts, because the extremely intense lights available can be blinding to drivers when you turn your head in their direction.

u/Mesquite_Skeet_Skeet · 2 pointsr/bicycling

I do that too. It's the perfect size and much cheaper than those specifically designed for bike trainers.

u/dirtypawscub · 1 pointr/Zwift

bought this off amazon a while ago and its worked fine for me so far. ANT+ and bluetooth, so it should work with the garmin. Definitely works in zwift.

Get a trainer and raise the front wheel with something homemade or something like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000BT8VPQ Also low cadence high effort intervals will help

u/UpTheDownEscalator · 5 pointsr/bicycling

That perception of indoor trainers is really outdated....Bike trainers have come a long way in the last several years and they've solved all the problems you describe.

Smart trainers and dumb trainers above $100 are going to be near silent. Now the majority of the noise comes from your bike's drivetrain, not the trainer, that's how quiet they are. They also use larger drums/flywheels which improves the road-like feel dramatically. And a $10 sweat net protects your frame from the corrosion you describe.

u/AspiringVoiceOver · 1 pointr/Portland

if you get a moped get a brightly colored one. yellow really sticks out, drivers see you more.

id reccomend you buy a nice chinese e bike kit or upgrade your scoot to 80cc. you cant lane split in oregon, technically you cant on a bike too. but youll get away with it on an e bike. and a nuce bafang kit is just as fast as the stock moped but you can ride bike lanes.

Something like this seems like it would do the trick.

The sweat will corrode your keyboard. Make sure the area under your head/neck are covered

u/sylocheed · 1 pointr/bicycling

Did you end up actually buying either? I'm still on the lookout and came across this one as well--plus, it's Amazon so very easy to order, although at $90-$100 it's not exactly inexpensive:

http://www.amazon.com/Minoura-DS-2100-Tancho-Display-Stand/dp/B00629VN7M/

Minoura DS-2100.

Minoura also made the DS-2000, which is also a freestanding vertical stand, but appears to be harder to find.

Had the exact same question yesterday. After searching on here, I settled for the Finn and bought it today:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Finn-Unisex-Adult-universal-holder/dp/B00D8Z9KPU

Edit: also that size of phone is on the smaller side these days :D

u/GravityIsForWimps · 2 pointsr/bicycling

Give me a few days and I will let you know. I picked up a couple of cheap ones to try, on BT to try on a second bike with my Lezyne, one ANT+ to try with a Bryton Rider 310. The ANT+ Onlydroid just came in yesterday, but unsurprisingly is branded different - CooSpo.

u/shadowamazon · 1 pointr/bicycling

How about this? You can store your bike standing up.

u/slackerthepirate · 2 pointsr/bicycling

Interesting, never thought of that. Assumed the block that came with my Tacx Neo 2 was sufficient. Any idea how I can measure out the current incline/decline? Looking at this now: https://www.amazon.com/CycleOps-Climbing-Riser-Block/dp/B07CBDXXY9

> NBPower Torque arm-Universal for E-Bike Electric Bicycle -Front or Rear,M14 for E-Bike Conversion Kit,Electric Bike kit Torque arm for BLDC hub Motor

This one?

These things are fairly standardized, but you got duped (and you're not the only one - this happens constantly).

That's a bad Chinese knockoff of a torque arm originally designed by GrinTech - the TorqArm_V1 - which was discontinued in 2010 due to its faulty design (not related to its axle fit - you just got a really poorly manufactured knockoff).

You can read more about the issues with that design, and why the original was discontinued, here.

GrinTech's V2 and V3 torque arms are excellent choices for a front hub motor. A bit pricier than the knockoffs, but unlike the knockoffs, they'll actually do the job they're intended for. I've personally used their V4 rear torque arm to keep an 1800w hub motor in check, so I can attest to their quality.

From below, it is available on Amazon. Link here

edit* Aaaannnnd... it's gone. The page I ordered from indicated 3 in stock at the time I placed my order. Refreshed and it went to "1 remaining". Now reads "currently unavailable." :(

u/YogiAU · 1 pointr/triathlon

Climbing block. This one in particular is by CycleOps

u/soobrex1 · 1 pointr/Zwift

I think the problem here is that you're on carpet. Can you get a thin piece of board at Home Depot/Lowe's and place it under the trainer legs?

Also, do you have the front wheel on some kind of riser block like this? If not, you should.

Pictured is a Busch + Müller Universal Cockpit Adapter( https://www.bumm.de/en/products/stromversorgung/parent/261/produkt/261.html ) that I bought in Greece while on vacation at 3Action in Athens( https://www.action3.gr/ ). It is a lot better than the adapters on the market in the USA, the only problem is the strap is real long and thus a problem waiting to happen on the Brompton. Finally one day I go to the REI in NYC and I leave my Brompton parked by their new model Bromptons to look at something and I hear a crack-crank-crack noise and I instinctively rushed to my Brompton. Some customers like idiots where folding and unfolding my very worn looking Brompton instead of the display models and got the strap stuck in the spoke and cut it. Despite that I managed to soldier on with it since there was rubber piece holding it together somewhat, but it become much harder to sinch up. Finally about 2 months ago even that rubber portion totally severed and there is no way I can properly tighten or use it.

I have went to bike store after bike store in the USA and all the mounts in the American market seem to suck. I was thinking of ponying up for a Quadlock case( https://www.quadlockcase.com/ ) and enough mounts for all 4 of my bikes. But I see in archived threads on /r/brompton people mention it is not suitable for M style handlebars which I have. Someone recommended a Finn mount but I see many negative Amazon reviews ( https://www.amazon.co.uk/Finn-Unisex-Adult-universal-holder/product-reviews/B00D8Z9KPU/ref=cm_cr_unknown?ie=UTF8&reviewerType=all_reviews&filterByStar=one_star&pageNumber=1 ) saying it shakes and can damage a phone because of that. Also someone here mentioned it doesn't fit on M style bars like mine( see: https://www.reddit.com/r/Brompton/comments/9gv05f/phone_mount_for_m_type_brompton/ ).

Does anyone know a good smartphone mount especially one available in the European market at European retailers since I am on vacation in Greece right now?
