Nice find. I cleaned one of those up a while back and it's still running great. I didn't take much for pics, but the diagrams in the album may help - http://imgur.com/a/g1i9P

I used naval jelly and wire brushed the shit out of mine, but since figured out that this Bullfrog stuff does the same job and won't eat your fingers - http://www.amazon.com/Bull-Frog-94236-Rust-Remover/dp/B00067ZQGK/ref=sr_1_1

I'm not convinced that any of them are much better than the others, especially with a light application like this. Hand Tool Rescue uses Evapo-Rust and it seems to work pretty well. They make a gel that would probably work well in this application since you can just brush it on the head and not have to soak the wood in the liquid form.

I saw the PDF. Those steps aren't going to give you a satisfactory result because that guide is for a door that hasn't been previously finished. Your door was previously finished with a fiberglass stain product. The adhesion promoter is critical to a good bond. Without it, anything you apply will be flaking off within months. It is available as a non-aerosol (Amazon UK link). But you'll have to work fast and use only a natural-bristle brush to apply it. Then follow that up with a good interior/exterior primer and your finish color.

If I may ask, why isn't unscewing the hinges an option? Just out of curiosity.

I cleaned my 750's pipes with a brass brush and lots of Nev-R-Dull after spraying them with this organic rust remover. That combo worked amazingly well, mine were pretty bad. There is some slight pitting now if you look close but from afar they look pretty shiny.

I got a link for some cheaper cosmoline if you're interested.

I found it after I purchased some of this stuff which is also really good-- more like fluid film, though.

I'll use the cosmoline next time and compare the two.

There are rust treatments that you paint on, they convert the rust and seal the area to further corrosion. Permatex makes one

And yes, get under carriage washes every few months to prevent rust as well.

Well, I wasn't thinking just straight WD-40. I was thinking something more like this.

When I got my 00 it was clogging the heater core with rust on a regular basis. It would turn green antifreeze orange in a couple weeks of driving. Evaporust makes a coolant flush to remove rust that I used 2x. I had the head off 9 months later and I was amazed at the results. Looked brand new!

I've never had this problem but I do buy premium hooks and take care of my flies. Its a big investment to lose several dozen flies (my box would be several hundred) so you might want to take a look at this

u/Sybertron · 0 pointsr/bicycling

You won't thank me, because all of your screws and bolts and everything (besides the chain) will work perfectly forever.

It took me a long time to finally figure out what the advocates for fluid film were talking about, but finally coated my truck this Fall. Definitely worth the $44 for a gallon.

u/gafonid · 2 pointsr/Miata

same here, my 03 is my winter daily. I gave it a copious underbody spray with this stuff

in the fall, all around the wheel arches and the running boards and everywhere that wasnt the brakes, exhaust piping, or engine.

and it has some blizzak WS60s on it, which make it EXTREMELY stable on snow and ice but you can still just leave it in first and do donuts in parking lots or drift around corners.

u/thekingdp · 8 pointsr/MechanicAdvice

I highly, highly, HIGHLY recommend you try this stuff. I know it's expensive, but I stopped buying cases of PB Blaster when I found this. I swear by it.

u/totally_not_griffin · 2 pointsr/CherokeeXJ

Here's what you need to do:

  1. Tape off the windows, headlights, taillights, turn signals, and door handles.

  2. Purchase this pool.

  3. Buy 3360 gallons of POR-15.

  4. Remove tape.

  5. Done! This will cost you about $427,212.

i have been planning on using a product called Kreem. seen a few decent reviews, but have not yet tried it myself.

u/Socially8roken · 1 pointr/MechanicAdvice

I don't know about the cost of repair to original condition but I do know to stop the rust, but it won't look pretty.

you need to remove the rust you can either scrub it off with an abrasive(wire brush, sandpaper) or you can use a rust dissolver like rustoleum(Probable will ruin paint so be careful). once all the rust is off you need to clean the area with a non lint forming cloth and apply some kind of barrier so the bare metal does not get oxygen, any kind of outdoors paint works or you can try to find the matching color
