I'm really glad to hear things have improved. Yes, it's very likely he needed time to adjust to his new home. With any luck he will continue to improve over time.

Are you going away over the holidays? I ask because you said he got more destructive after your trip this spring.

This product might help with his scratching at the carpet outside the door.

Does he have any scratchers near the sofa? It's great that he stops now when you tell him to, but you could take it a step further and redirect him to the scratcher with lots of praise when he uses it. Even if he already has scratchers elsewhere, sometimes it really helps to put one right next to the object they're scratching, since they apparently feel the need to mark their territory in that particular area.

Do you trim his nails regularly? If not, that can help control the amount of damage. There are also nail covers that you can try.

>sometimes it really is like it's some kind of attention seeking behaviour.

One of my cats (the passive one I mentioned before) will tap me with her front paw to get attention, which sounds ok except when she gets really anxious (or hungry), she'll follow me constantly, getting underfoot and repeatedly tapping my legs and screeching, and if I can't deal with her directly, she will begin adding a scrape with her claws when she taps. Is he doing something like that?

Oh, one more thought: he might like the toys that dispense kibbles or treats. That would be another thing to try for when he's alone during the day. If you're not familiar with them, it takes work (both physical and mental) for the cat to get the treat out of the toy, which helps satisfy cats' hunting instinct.

It doesn't sound like this is a medical issue, but more a behavioral one, though if the water drinking is excessive, you may want to get her checked, as that can be a sign of kidney problems or diabetes.

I would suggest buying a Cat Dancer Wall Scratcher, and attaching it to the outside of the door. Make it so that there is more fun OUTSIDE the room than inside it. If you don't have a cat tree, get a tall one and put it near a window in your home. The cat will see it as her space and enjoy spending time there looking at things outside, and probably will forget about the room she wanted to get into. Also buy some small pom-pom balls and tiny fur mice she can bat around the house too.

As for the food and weight issue, I very highly recommend Orijen Regional Red. It is the best cat food I have come across. While it is expensive, you will find the cat feeling more full/satisfied with the quality protein, and she will most likely eat less of it. After a few months on this food, she should naturally lose some weight, and I can guarantee you that he fur will be as soft and shiny as mink.

Your kitten is the perfect age to get used to you touching and handling their feet.

When the cat starts scratching at the couch or whatever, move the cat to the toy they're allowed to scratch at.... The main reason cats do that is because they're trying to file their claws down and stretch to stay limber...

Before expensively and painfully taking away your cats' greatest defense mechanisms, try getting something simple with cardboard or tough rope, like this thing...

http://www.amazon.com/Petlinks-System-Around-Hanging-Scratcher/dp/B004AN6Q3S/ref=pd_sim_sbs_petsupplies_12

I always screw up links so that may not post correctly, but that thing is a $9 door-hanger with the tough rope and a catnip pouch... the cat got used to using it and it actually saved our couch.

I have a huge litter mat, this one. Litter still gets alllllll over the floor. I don't think this a battle that can be won, unfortunately.

I bought some plastic corner covers from Amazon and they work really well for prevention: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0058JL9KS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_ZPmrDbRZ23B9N

u/RogerFedererFTW · 1 pointr/FantasyPL

You will probably not even need treats! As i said, cats(at least mine) will try and touch the spinning arrow because they think it's a toy(or alive). You could buy one of these

But if that doesn't work, you could make her paw touch it, and thengive her a treat every time. She will get it after 3-4 times.

u/BravoIsACult · 2 pointsr/livepd

Bought something like this years ago and my cat loved it and you didn't need to clean up cat nip. It had a zipper on the back and you put the cat nip in. She would roll around on the mat. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004MA1LU2/ref=psdc_3024127011_t4_B016H3T8EC It says out of stock but I think I got mine at target.

u/Different-Lemon · 1 pointr/CatAdvice

The wall corners sound like they could be quickly resolved by using some plastic corner guards like these:

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Trimaco-1-1-8-in-x-1-1-8-in-x-4-ft-Plastic-Corner-Guard-Commercial-01184G/100118843

typically you put them up to protect the drywall from things like people bumping into or rubbing on them, vacuum cleaner hoses, or other objects banging into the corners. But, they're much thicker/more durable than tape, and i'd be surprised if she enjoys chewing on the plastic.

With her tree/wall scratching, it might be simplest to pull her tree just far enough away from the wall that she can't reach it. Otherwise i think your idea of carpet on the wall could work. You could also try something like this:

https://www.amazon.ca/Pet-Couch-Protector-Self-Adhesive-Upholstery/dp/B07DR5CN1B/ref=sr_1_10?crid=2V2ICH8Q5SKK8&keywords=couch+protector+for+cats&qid=1574553897&sprefix=counch+protec%2Caps%2C169&sr=8-10

Some of these stick onto the couch with an adhesive (like the corner protectors), but you could also just attach any thick-ish piece of plastic to the wall with some double-sided tape. The idea being to put up a durable enough surface that she can't immediately bite/scratch through it, and is unpleasant/doesn't satisfy her desires anymore so she ultimately stops bothering the area all together.

I was wondering too! It looks like an AMZNOVA Cat Scratcher

I bought these off Amazon for the same reason. My cat can't get under them so the carpet gets to live another day.

I hesitate to opine about other's food choices so you should run that by your vet. However, I always check that the first ingredient is meat such as chicken, versus chicken meal or chicken by-product.

As long as he's not being destructive, put in him temporary lockup during your mealtimes. Maybe hanging a scratcher from the door knob will help to distract him.

You really should look at getting cardboard scratches. Our two cats don't scratch any furniture at all since getting a few and putting them around the house.
