Loove cloth diapers. I've been really happy with them. Fewer leaks and blow outs than disposable, I love the way they smell like... clothes, not diapers. Plus $$ savings.

I was really intimidated buying stuff. I dabbled, a few of these, a few of those, and have settled on my favs which I pass along as recommendations for friends, but I still do just fine using ones I don't care for - they still work! So you can't go "wrong" per se.

Anyway, I posted this a couple weeks ago, but this is my "ideal stash" if I could go back in time and start from scratch. You can buy all these on amazon (easy registry) OR Nicki Diapers on black friday for some extra savings (which is what I did back in the day). I know the list is huge and overwhelming, sorry! But if you click through it I think you'll get an idea of quantities etc. that will get your baby's bum covered.

Newborn stash (for babies up to 11 or 12 pounds, my focus here is CHEAP since it's a limited time): Cotton prefolds, size small or Size small newborn prefolds, bamboo (I like the little bit of stretch) I say 30 of these, so if you forget laundry it's not the end of the world Cotton ones are good too.

Pack of snappis to secure the prefolds .

Blueberry newborn covers I prefer the snaps to velcro because the velcro attracted fuzz in the dryer and really weren't more difficult to secure. I vote for 4 covers minimum, never had a problem with that amount. You can reuse them each change until epic poop which gets on them from the prefold.

Post newbron. This is your big stash - I started using these diapers when my daughter was 3 months and still use them when she's almost 3. For these I prioritized ease of wash, use, and durability over being as cheap as possible.

BumGenius Freetime The ultimate diaper, washes awesome stays soft, effective, dries fast. I'd suggest 12 of these, this is the diaper you use all the time.

Bumgenius Pockets For your big pee-ing times (aka night) it can be nice to have a "pocket diaper" which you can stuff more in they're chunky but night time is not time to care about a slim bum I stuff with prefolds, the bamboo inserts are slimmer and work too, but I guess I am just more used to cotton prefolds because that's what i grab for. I think 2 pocket diapers is sufficient. My issue with these is that the "inserts" don't really reliably "agitate out" in the wash as they are supposed to, which is why I prefer the Freetime.

Extras:

Baby washcloths I have 24, use them for wiping, easier than a chunky prefold for baby crevasses.

Garbage Bag I use this to line a trash can, throw all dirties in, take everything (bag and all) straight to the wash, toss/empty,wash it all (bag too) use bag 2 during laundry. I suggest 2 of these.

On the go bag For dirty y when you are out of the house (or dirtied clothes)

Cloth diaper friendly bum lotion If your kid's rash isn't clearing up with this, take out disposables, get the classic drug store butt paste etc. sooner rather than later and take care of it (bad rashes suck) Some kids just need that approach - you'll figure it out when the time comes.

I love theme beds, too! His crib is a convertible crib, though, so for now we're sticking with it being converted into the toddler bed. The funny thing is that he has never slept in the crib. We've been bed sharing up until now. The transition to the toddler bed should be interesting, but it's about the same height as our euro-style bed, so I think it may go better than I originally thought.

Thank you! It took awhile for us to be able to get a house. We ended up using USDA financing and I think we only paid about $2K out of pocket. We found a lovely home in a rural area, but it's still only an hour away from both Tampa and Orlando.

I love baby showers. The perspective that each person has is usually so different. And, yes, tons of well-meaning people gift impractical things. My sister got me a diaper bag that was nice, Eddie Bauer I think, but it was really just a sack with two pockets on the outside. We ended up getting the DadGear Backpack, which is the best diaper bag we've had. (I went through about 6 of them to be honest, just trying to find the right one.)

So when is your little man due? Do you have a name picked out yet?

We have this one and we love it. It's cute but also manly ish so my husband has no problem wearing it. Plus I love that it's a backpack so it's hands free. And I get compliments on it ALL the time. Including many people who don't even realize it's a diaper bag and are surprised when they find out!

It's spacious, stands upright by itself, and stays open by itself as there's a frame in the opening.

Edit- also, it's made by a Japanese company (I believe?) and the box it comes in says "MAKE BEST BAG ENJOY HAPPY TIME" which is great for a chuckle.

I bought this Rebecca Minkoff bag a little while ago. Its a diaper bag, but a lot of people online (Corporette, for one) have touted it as a great work bag. I finally took the plunge and I have to say that I LOVE it.

It has like eight interior pockets (because it's a diaper bag) and a lot of space inside. It's pretty large but it's mostly nylon--very high-quality nylon--with leather trimming so it's also pretty light. It's about 2.5lb if I remember correctly. It's very well balanced. The handles have a long drop so they can be slung over the shoulder, but it also comes with a nice shoulder strap. You'll have to use a laptop case inside, which may or may not be a dealbreaker for you. Personally, I find it to not be an issue.

This bag also doubles as a good weekend bag, as well as a carryon bag for flights.

I can see it not being everyone's cup of tea, particularly since it's not all leather. But if you need a lot of space and structure in a bag that isn't very heavy, I think this one fits the bill very well.

EDIT: I should note that I have a 13" Macbook Pro. It would easily fit a bigger computer. (15" definitely.)

Oh yeah, and buying all the things.

Lucie's List (I think that's how it's spelled) is a great site where they review baby products. It's great because she will have a line up of six car seats that are similar, or three strollers, and you really get an idea of how they compare.

Also we bought our diaper bag already (going to be using it for a trip) and it's awesome. The Dad Gear backpack is super great and I can't recommend it enough. I already love it and I don't have any kids, so if you don't want one of the cute purse types, I say go for it. It's made in the US, has a great design, and I feel like it's more versatile and will last a long time. I'm like the least fashionable person ever though, so carrying around a plain backpack doesn't bother me.

I love Lo & Sons. The bags are nylon but very good quality and nice looking, and well organized. Most importantly they're very lightweight! I own the OMG and love it, it's a great diaper bag and travel bag.

Another option is the Rebecca Minkoff Knocked Up baby bag. I know it says it's a diaper bag but it's lightweight, great quality and has lots of organization.

I have a PPB Sashay Satchel and it's fine for quick trips but it wouldn't work super well for a longer outing unless you used disposables for those outings or kept some extra cloth diapers somewhere else (like in the car) so they weren't all in the diaper bag at the same time. Also as far as downsides go I do have a couple of things I wish it had like an insulated pouch for bottles and just more pockets in general on the inside of the bag. Smaller items tend to be very difficult to find. What I love about the PPB bag is that you don't look at it and think "oh that's a diaper bag." I feel like it's "nice enough," so to speak, to be something I could take with me as a purse for pretty much anything I'd need to go do. So, ya know, if I needed to take it with me to a wedding or something I'd be OK with that. I'd feel a little strange carrying around some of the other diaper bags I've looked at.

My husband has the Graco Gotham diaper backpack and it has more than enough room for a couple of diapers, change of clothes, wet bag, bottle, pacifier, wipes, changing pad, and whatever else. It has an insulated bottle pouch which is nice. It has so many pockets and such so it's really easy to keep it organized. Honestly if I were making a longer trip out with baby I'd prefer to have my husband's diaper bag over mine.

I know a lot of ladies on here just use a regular backpack so that's always an option also.

I EP so a lot of what I am saying comes from that place. Like others mentioned, if you're able to bf directly, you don't necessarily need a pump ASAP. That said, I got mine before and ended up needing it right when I got home from the hospital, so I was super glad I had it already.

I have the S2 and S9+ so can't answer the part about the battery, but I love them both (as much as one can love a pump, I suppose). I ordered extra parts on Amazon so I always have spare just in case something happens.

If you see a lactation consultant, they can help you with sizing for flanges.

If you're planning on pumping at work I HIGHLY recommend getting some sort of hands-free pumping bra. Total game changer, and I wouldn't have made it 8+months without being able to use my hands!

Graduated to dad life a month ago so I'm no expert, but personally I think a diaper bag is worth it. I got this. My wife on the other hand just uses a big beach style bag and it is really hard to find things in it, but I'm a bit OCD when it comes to organizing stuff.

The reasons I personally like a dedicated diaper bag:

We absolutely love this Dad Gear backpack diaper bag (in orange). It is so well designed. There is a zipper compartment on the top that you can put 10-15 diapers in. And there is a separate compartment on the bottom that you can access from the outside that stores a package of wipes. There is one large compartment for extra clothes or larger stuff. And then 2 smaller compartments in the front. All in all, it is the perfect bag. I wish there was a more feminine version or one that had a similar thoughtfulness. But I haven't found it. So I just use this. But sometimes I would love something a bit more stylish for myself!

Is it necessary to specifically get a diaper bag? Probably not, but I wanted a cute bag. I asked my husband for this one for Christmas, and it looks like it will be really useful. My husband is going to get his own, probably a backpack or messenger bag. He's actually pretty excited about picking one out.

Honestly, if you really want one, I'd tell him so and put it on the registry. He can pick out his own.

Definitely backpack. You're going to need your hands and who wants sore shoulders or things falling down easily? Backpacks distribute the weight and keep it on your back :D


Insulated parts of a bag are a good plus because you could make bottles before you leave and keep them cold as you travel... or take breastmilk in bottles and keep it cold.


If baby will be going to daycare they might require pre-made bottles. If you have a commute, the insulated bags make sure the bottles stay cold on your way to and from daycare :)

MOLLE and certain color schemes have classically been a military style but it hasn't stayed there. There's plenty of mall ninjas who have been using it for years and plenty of people who simply like the look, comfort, or usability. If I see someone with such a bag I don't even think twice about it any more unless something about their behavior sets me off.

The Skip Hop Versa. I am in LOVE with this bag. I knew I wanted it from the minute I saw it. It looks like a giant purse, and has pretty great reviews. I'm actually taking it along on my trip instead of a purse because I'm carrying a thousand things on the plane like meds, snacks, etc

We switched from a diaper bag to a backpack. This was recommended to us and has worked out great! (Although it looks like this is no longer available there are comparable backpacks on amazon based on your style)

The easy access wipe holder has been great when I don’t want to put the bag down in a dirty restroom (can easily reach the side while it’s on my back).

It’s also just a backpack, so no complaints from my husband.

I tried one like what you linked (Halova or something like that on Amazon) and I would not recommend. That clasp top means the inside just becomes jumbled and the straps were flimsy and not comfy to wear with much weight in the bag or length of time with it on.

We got this a few months ago and love it. For overnight travel we do need a 2nd backpack (just use husband's Osprey) but for out and about this is great. The advantages over a regular backup are more pockets (like a perfect one right on top where store the pacifier/teether for fast access) and insulated pockets.

A Moby Wrap was indispensable for our kids. A Baby Björn or other baby-wearing apparatus also works, but those tend to get pretty expensive for the good ones that will last.

And you can fill it with necessities like baby lotion, thermometer, a couple teething toys, or some cloth wipes.

They're going to have way more than enough clothes and toys. Everyone gifts those or hands those down.

Buy extra carbon for the genie. Costco is the best place to buy the refills for the bags for Genie BTW. Here in Canada, it is ~$26 for a 4 pack of refills where most places it is $26 for a 3 pack. If you want to use other brands too, you can probably find better deals though.

If your wife wants this diaper bag, you can look at this knockoff. My wife absolutely loves it.

I was given an adorable, stylish diaper bag that I registered for and my in-laws also gave my husband a dad diaper-backpack.... and the backpack is what we still use! It was Fisher Price brand, we've been really tough on it, but our son is now 28 months. My niece just is 16 months and they are still using the Columbia brand diaper-backpack from her shower. IMO a backpack is so much easier to lug around when you have an older and heavier child that wants to be carried and it is more "hands free" than carrying a shoulder bag. I'm looking into the backpacks that open up completely from the top like this one because our current one is starting to tear at the stitching. I would say it lived a full life though and it exceeded my expectations. And both the backpacks I mentioned are extremely neutral looking, they don't scream "This is for Dads only!!!!!".

My kiddo's potty-trained, but we'll be using these again with #2, when and as. :)

For out-and-about, I liked the Planetwise Wet/Dry ones (link), since I could keep clean diapers in the "dry" section and find them easily.

We have this one from Graco and for the most part, I really like it. It's been with us to New York, Phoenix, and Hawaii, plus all over town and it's held up well. I don't see why it wouldn't last through at least two kids.

Pros:

• Wipe compartment: It is super convenient to have wipes always accessible on the side. I removed the case it comes with for wipes and just put in the pack of wipes directly. It can hold a whole pack of Costco size wipes!
  
• Organization: There are lots of pockets inside for diapers, bibs, toys, whatever. I like having one of the zippered sections dedicated to diapering, one for change of clothes/blankets, and one for food pouches/snacks.
  
• Insulated pocket: This is great for two bottles, or a bottle and a container of yogurt, or several bags of breastmilk + a small ice pack.
  
  Cons:
  
• Size: It's slightly too large for a quick trip to the store, slightly too small for travel. When I run errands or go for a walk, it feels silly to bring a whole backpack when all I need is some diapers, wipes, and a snack or bottle. When we went to New York and Hawaii, I was able to fit all his stuff in, but it would have been nice to have space for my own stuff too so I didn't have to carry a purse.

I've seen some cool backpack options (they seem like they'd be way easier than an over-the-shoulder to me) on Amazon like this one. It's unisex, stylish (in my opinion!) and it seems to be pretty handy!

So we had an expensive over-the-shoulder/crossbody whatever you want to call it diaper bag. It was like $100+ - a gift from my mom as I'd have never spent that much on a diaper bag just because I dunno I'm cheap.

Had and used that bag for about 6 months. I loved all the compartments etc. And then the strap broke. The company eventually offered to send a replacement but said it would take 2-6 weeks. Started using a regular backpack in the interim and while I hated the lack of compartments I realized how much easier the backpack style was. Ended up buying a backpack one off Amazon for $50ish and haven't looked back since!

Several friends IRL have recommended backpacks over shoulder bags. It's easier to baby wear with. I like that this one has a side pocket for wipes.

This is what I have and I love it. I really like the zipper on the back. I can unzip, pop out the tubing and cord and pump without taking my spectra out. I keep a wet bag for all my gear and it fits perfect on top.

I haven't tried out with baby, but I LOVE how many pockets it has, plus it has an insulated bottle pocket on the side plus a baby wipe pocket so you can quickly grab a wipe for fast clean-ups. I really avoided the over-the-shoulder style since I hate them, and backpacks just seem more comfortable. It'll be like college again lol

We bought this diaper backpack and I am not a huge fan. I use it at the airport, but refuse to wear it anywhere else. The side pockets are quite wide and I feel like I hit every seat walking down the plane aisle. And the compartments are so tiny and specific, they can be more frustrating than useful. We use Dr Brown wide bottles and they barely fit in the pockets and no way will they fit in the insulated pocket.

I wish we had just bought a nice regular backpack, but don’t want to spend more money on an item I really only use for travel.

Backpack! Preferably the kind that also has a sorta handle to it.

Reasons:

1. I already feel too wide, I don't want to add an extra 8-10" to my side to knock over everything (and that's assuming I don't stuff it, which I totally will).
   
   
2. Don't have to worry about the strap slipping off your shoulder while fussing with baby.
   
   
3. Backpacks make it way easier to organize by priority since you put the stuff you only maybe might need every once in a while on the bottom and the "oh no I definitely need this now" stuff on top.
   
   
4. Better coverage of your stuff, because strangers don't need to know what you're carrying.
   
   
5. It's not obvious it's a diaper bag! I like this.
   

I warned my dear wife well ahead of time that I would not be carrying a giant purse for this purpose.

She then turned up with a sweet Jeep (I love and own Jeeps) backpack with insulated pockets and even a gas-capped pocket for wipes.

It's not huge, but it fits everything we need and doesn't look odd when she's carrying it.

I’ve spilt a whole bottle in there before and it washes so easily. There’s pockets everywhere and you can fit so much stuff into it. We used this for a three month NICU stay and there’s not a single tear on the thing. It seems indestructible with endless storage.

Necessities include: diapers, wipes, hand sanitizer, ziplock bags to put dirty diapers in at doctors appointments <— no one tells you about that until you’ve got a poop diaper in your hand with nowhere to put it, change of clothes for baby, a blanket depending on the season, an extra paci or eight. I always kept a copy of baby’s birth certificate and insurance card in there too just in case. And snacks for me. : )

I bought this one and I love it. It fits everything we need plus some and it's really cute but not so girly that my husband won't carry it. Even my father-in-law carries it when he takes my son to the park. The front pocket will keep things cool for a little while if you need that function, as it's insulated. The zipper on the back helps if you need something from the bottom but don't feel like digging through everything. Lots of inside pockets.

We have the Hap Tim backpack and love it. My husband is a big fan because it looks like a normal backpack. I’ve travelled with it and it’s big enough for all of baby’s gear plus my own stuff for the flight. Skip hop has a similar one too.

We use this one and I LOVE it. I can stuff so much shit in it and it clips onto the stroller and grocery carts. It's a little bulky but the only time that mattered was on the plane but I still was able to shove it under the seat in front of me. I'm really glad we went with this bag instead of the tote I was looking at before though.

I’ll be totally honest: it feels gimmicky. They claim they are “CONSISTENTLY RATED THE #1 DIAPER BACKPACK BAG BY ALL PARENTS WORLDWIDE!” which is a ridiculous claim. How would you even measure that? If you’re willing to give up the cell phone charger feature, you can find other bags that will offer the same or similar features for half the price. Here is the one that me and at least three of my other friends have. If you really like the style of the bag you found, here is one very similar for almost 1/3 the price.

I have this backpack diaper bag. I have two in diapers now and am due with baby #4 in March. I feel certain this bag is plenty roomy enough for everyone's diapers and wipes, change of clothes, cups, snacks, blankets, toiletries, and a few small toys and books. I highly recommend this backpack diaper bag. Oddly, it's made by JEEP.

It has a million pockets which makes small things easier to find. The wipes are on the side, easily accessible. And you can carry it on a plane, put it under the seat in front of you, and nothing falls out.

After trying a few different styles of bags and backpacks, we ultimately settled on using this backpack most of the time. Diapers in the small front pocket. Bottles in the front main compartment, along with other snacks. Clothes in the back compartment, perhaps with some small toys. Wipes on the side.

We had a big messenger bag style diaper bag, but it was too awkward to use. The backpack is a little smaller, but with careful packing does pretty well. When we were going out for a longer period of time, I'd sometimes just use a duffle bag.

We wanted a gender neutral backpack diaper bag, since my husband and I use it equally. With my first, we had the Eddie Bauer Flannel backpack from Target. I loved the organization/pockets but didn't love how poorly it was constructed. A lot of the seams ripped and we just lived with it for a while out of laziness.

Just upgraded to this Bag Nation bag over Christmas. It's a similar style but it's higher quality construction, and has a lifetime warranty. We are really happy with it.

It has a huge opening so that you can see everything instead of it opening just at the top and having to look down into darkness with tons of other pockets so that I don’t carry my purse anymore.

Husband and I both carry it comfortably with totally different body types as I’m a narrow 5’6 and he is 6’3 with wide shoulders.

There’s so much stuff like this, too. Diaper bags get the military treatment way too often. It’s like someone out there doesn’t realize that you can be a father without military training.

I bought this one. I really wanted a backpack style so I could baby-wear in front with the bag on my back and have my arms totally free. My other criteria were stealth, volume, and lots of pockets. I went with a backpack because I figured if I had the baby in a carrier harness, it would make juggling a messenger/crossbody bag as well too difficult and uncomfortable. I'm not really a purse person, either, so a lot of the tote-style and "designer look" bags just really didn't appeal to my taste or needs. Plus, backpacks have shorter straps and top handles, which makes slinging them over various chairs easier.

I ended up going with one I found on amazon for $30, so if it turns out I don't like using it for baby gear, I'm not out a lot of money.

Um, yes? That’s exactly what I did. You can get a used stroller dirt cheep. Think I paid $30 for ours. Of course you’d still mind it, but its less worrisome than losing a $400 stroller.

Backpack, my dude. I have a baby bag that’s a backpack and it’s honestly like, my favorite bag. So many cool compartments and hooks and stuff. Easy access for wipes. I think it’s this one. Highly recommend.
