Hello! This sounds like a stressful situation for you, so I have a couple of suggestions that may help you gain some control again. I saw another commenter suggest a gps watch. I think that is a great idea. I suggest getting him something like this watch. I suggest presenting it as a gift, and not a punishment tracker. A gift he will hopefully cherish and want to have on him all the time. You will hopefully not have to resort to using it, but it would be a great tool if you wanted a piece of mind or were unable to locate him. And as for the sneaking off I would simply install these on his door and windows. I think that he may be taking off to test his boundaries, or maybe he has a desire to adventure a little bit. Maybe you could start going on walks with him after dinner or whenever you may be able to spare 10-20 minutes. I hope some of these things can help you get some piece of mind :)

My one remaining question question would be if you might be aware of an alternative to the doorbird door chime that might be a bit more cost effective than $150? This would be so that we can all hear the doorbell ringing during the day.

You mean a doorbell? xD There are already products you can use instead. Called like ''mail chimes, mail sensors etc'' -Some with pretty reasonable prices on a few of em if you look around.

It's her house? Help her out by "Upgrading" the doorbell to a "much nicer doorbell". For about $40 you can find a doorbell that plays a melody. Pick one that plays a soft, soothing, and fairly loooong melody. Try it out at the home store first to make sure it doesn't react to multiple doorbell button pushes.

You could also replace it with a "record your own doorbell" chime. This would allow you to record a 3 second doorbell followed by 20 seconds of silence - so hitting the button ten times results in one single ring.

This is a door and window sensor that sends a push notification to your phone every time the door changes states. It looks like it might require a hub to operate though. Could possibly communicate with a smart home device like Alexa or Google Home.

yes red wire was on transformer and white was on front when i looked. Here is one i found on Amazon for less than $20. Haven't found a Braun yet. Gotta check my transformer voltage to be sure before i buy anything. Thanks again. It's hard to get specific answers on ring forums. I did not want to use the ring chime if i didn't have too. Yes, I understand how the box opens. I would use a tilt switch to turn the device on and check for mail. It wouldn't have like, exposed wires hanging out everywhere. It would just be a small box in a nice case that sits on the bottom.

There are commercial products that do the same thing, so I'm kind of hoping that if I give it a nice professional and discreet look it shouldn't cause any problems.

Wireless doorbells are fairly cheap and easy to install. Use a command strip so you can take it off without damaging anything.

16V is enough, what matters is the power number. Nest require at least 10VA. 30VA is enough for 3 smart doorbell.

Heath/Zenith is the same company that makes the ones sold under the Hampton Bay name at Lowe's/Home Depot.

Oh, and yeah, if your house is not built within the last 25 years or so, it may be a 10VAC transformer, which finding a chime for may be difficult. But most anything newer generally used 16VAC already.

Ring 2 is battery operated. It can be charged off your existing doorbell, or just pull the battery out and charge via USB. Ring says battery will last without charge up to 6 months. I'm guessing that's generous. If you go the battery only option you'll probably want to throw a chime in so it can be heard in the house.

Record 5-20 sec of .mp3, and make it your doorbell . Change the song/sound whenever you feel like it. Now you can have a nice guitar sound if you want one.

You can get an ESP8266 and use Arduino code to program up a few buttons and a door sensor for <$20.

Yes, Battery powered doorbell - it's what my grandad used...here the doorbell button can be stuck to any surface (like bedside drawers) and when pressed will ring out throughout the house.
