Original post: Friendly reminder to all Avatar fans to check out the novel The Rise of Kyoshi!

Comments:

Author: kkachi95 Body: It's been over a month since The Rise of Kyoshi came out and yet I've seen so many Avatar fans who don't know it exists, which is a shame! I'm sure there are a lot of people who can attest to this, but this is a fantastic official novel and a great addition to the Avatar universe. F.C. Yee, the author, did a solid job at expanding the universe and developing the characters. I highly recommend reading it if you haven't! If you have read it, join us at /r/Avatar_Kyoshi! The sequel drops July of next year. (OP is a fan-made poster by me)

Author: Diggenwalde Body: I'll attest to this! This was my Novel of the summer, and will likely stay my book of the year. Kyoshi is such a fascinating character, and the author does a great job at exploring her origins, and setting her up to be the Kyoshi we know from the show. We learn a great deal about how she becomes that respected avatar. Her friendships are genuine and well developed, her instruction in the elements is very different. Hell, even the process of finding the avatar is unorthodox. There are great villains, awesome bending sequences, and a plot that feels distinctly avatar. You're doing yourself a disservice if you aren't reading it.

Author: goodgonegirl123 Body: Is this canon or fan-made comic?

Author: MrBKainXTR Body: The art is fan made, but its based on the official canon novel The Rise of Kyoshi.

Author: SoraForBestBoy Body: Its really cool there’s finally an exploration into Kyoshi, snippets of her in ATLA made me intrigued about her

Author: Jokeri009 Body: Dude she’s such a badass

Author: e-aakash Body: Are there novels for all of the storyline? (Newcomer here, watched the series only a month ago)

Author: Fbalika1996 Body: As far as I know, Kyoshi has this book, Aang has the TV show and a bunch of comics (the movie doesn't exist, don't even bother) and Korra has the TV show and some comics.

Author: Gibsor92 Body: What movie? There is no movie inside Ba Sing Se...

Author: Slyzard09 Body: The Earth King has invited you to Lake Laogai.

Author: SoraForBestBoy Body: For there is no movie in Ba Sing Se.

Author: AutoModerator Body: I am honored to accept his invitation I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please contact the moderators of this subreddit if you have any questions or concerns.

Author: SoraForBestBoy Body: Here we are safe, we are free

Author: lobonmc Body: Wait TLK has comics which ones?

Author: MrBKainXTR Body: You may want to check out these pages giving an overview of the Comics, and Canon Beyond the Shows and Comics. Rise of Kyoshi is unqiue in that there really isn't a novel with new story content in the franchise. There were a few novelizations of parts of ATLA and LoK, but before this nothing telling a new canon story.

I'm big into anime, reading/writing/words in general + board games. My lists reflect that somewhat ! I started reading when I was 3-4 thanks to my oldest sister, and many classmates and teachers were surprised or even disbelieving when I entered preschool already able to read. I got called a nerd since elementary but I never took it as an insult, since I really enjoyed reading and I saw it as the reason I was able to do so well in school in the first place (though referred to as a nerd, I actually was never very studious). I was also called a "walking dictionary" during junior high, which I also took as compliment!

Board games is a funny one. I always liked the classics growing up and went out of my way to learn the more "obscure" ones like backgammon and othello, but didn't know about "modern" board games until I started college, where I walked into an "English conversation club" meeting out of curiosity (they used anime characters in their posters...) . Turns out, they played board games as a way to naturally get conversation going. And it seemed to work really well, and I loved it! Though English is my second language I learned it early enough (at around 7 y/o) that I didn't gain much skill from the actual purpose of the club, but I think it definitely helped me develop socially in general, plus it was nice to interact with different international students. I came to love board games because of it and once I ended up coming back home to community college was able to continue the habit by briefly becoming a regular at a board game cafe. I'm busier these days, but have by now gathered my own small collection of board games (':

It's weird, because for me in terms of my nerd collections, outside of video games, manga was my next biggest outlet. If I'm going to be completely honestly, I was too scared to get into comic books back when I was a younger teenager because seeing the individual issues made it very daunting. Manga back then was easier because well, it was numbered, and because of all the volumes, it was all presented very easy and accordingly well for a socially awkward teenager who didn't want to ask advice.

I still remember getting big into them, that was around the time that Civil War was happening. Which was really interesting for me, but then asking friends about trying to read up on it, and how not only did I need to keep up with Civil War the series, I had to also read some issues of Amazing Spider-Man (which was already confusing, there's multiple versions of Spider-Man out?), Fantastic Four and New Avengers, also later on some Iron Man and Punisher as well along with She-Hulk, some Thunderbolts and such.

At that time, Bleach and Naruto were much easier because everything was condensed into just these volumes I needed to read. I wasn't big enough into it to subscribe to Shonen Jump, so I would just patiently wait until a new one would come out. It was a bit annoying using my allowance to pay $10 or so to finish something that would be done in an hour, but I was hooked.

As time went on in high school, I moved less towards manga and more into anime. This was back when Toonami and Adult Swim was in it's glory days. From there, I suddenly understood this concept that manga would usually come up first then followed by the anime, so I wanted to get into this. That meant going into scanlations. So at the peak of me liking anime and manga I was going and watching fansubbed episodes of stuff and constantly waiting for new chapters to come up to read.

College rolled around, and I guess not having cable, in addition to being able to have a much broader group of friends and social life made it so that focusing as much as I could on anime and manga was getting harder. In fact, during this time I think that the only big ones I remember getting into were Death Note and Gurren Lagann and FMA: Brotherhood. I still remember my roommate getting really confused when I bough the box set of Death Note and it came in this massive Amazon box.

But, mostly around this time, anime and manga flew to the wayside for me. It was much harder to keep up with and friends who were dedicated in it had to follow everything almost religiously. Unlike say a TV show or something, anime would be like at a minimum 26 episodes for a series, some 51 (not talking about OVAs or limited runs mind you) which made it hard to do on a college schedule.

It was around senior year that I decided to try to get back into things. For me that was first with comic books. For that it was much easier. If there was storyline you liked, there was either a TPB or a hardcover edition of everything you missed. This you can pick and choose. Oh, I really want to read all of Batman: Year One. Good news, there's a collected version of that. Oh, there's a new series called Saga I want to read? If I can't read every new issue, I'll just wait a bit for the next couple issues to be collected and read it on trade.

For manga that's a lot harder, as least how they package and sell it in the US. You can't just choose storylines, they constantly go by volume. I can't really say easily find an exact storyline of something I like and choose only to read that. Those numbered volumes just keep going and going. In fact, this happened to me one time. I was trying to start to read a bit more of a recent series, 20th Century Boys, and I lost track as to what volume I was at. This was a combination of me buying them and borrowing from friend's. After seeing how there's no real easy way to figure out where to pick up, I just gave up.

I know that they're at least trying though. One recent series I've loved recently is Attack on Titan. After watching the first season on episodes I wanted to read the manga to see the differences between the two and was very happy that they've got a collected "Colossal Edition" that have volumes 1-5 in it.

I really do want to get back into manga, but for someone who's been out of it for a bit, it doesn't really seem that new user friendly as compared to comic books. Which is very odd to say, but nowadays if I go into a comic book store I can talk about how much I love Matt Fraction's stuff and have someone in there recommend to me something else. This all being said, I guess this is moreover an issue that I can't find a reliable manga store in my place, but I feel like this is stressing my original point, that for me to try to get back into it requires a lot more work than I'm used to.

Some things I feel like mentioning:

The Sword Art Online volume that comes out this month is the manga. The first light novel volume comes out next month. I think I won't get the manga but I will definitely buy the light novel volumes.

The first 3 volumes of Phoenix by Osamu Tezuka are currently available digitally and the 4th volume comes out next week (March 11). You can get it directly from Vizmanga, Amazon Kindle, iBookstore, Nook, and Google Play.

You can buy a Shonen Jump subscription on Rightstuf ($26) and get a free year of their Got Anime Membership.

I noticed most volumes of Attack on Titan are currently around $6-$7 on amazon so it is worth checking it out if you are interested in buying the series. Worth noting that if you don't mind waiting the Attack on Titan Colossal Edition 1 comes out in May and contains the first 5 volumes of the series.

Deadman Wonderland volume 1 which came out last month is still $6 on amazon.

Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer Vol. 1-2 is currently available for preorder comes out in November. I also noticed Noragami, Kokoro Connect, and Ubel Blat are available for preorder (on amazon at least).

---

This week I had around 8 volumes preordered but I had to cancel most of them. I plan to buy them in the future during a sale. (Really wanted Nijigahara Holograph....waited so long for it...it was even delayed...but I have been spending too much on manga recently so :/ )

Haganai volume 6 just arrived and it seems next volume the manga finally reaches the 2nd season of the anime. Nisekoi volume 2 should get here tomorrow (currently around $6.30 on amazon). Psyren volume 15 has not shipped yet...no idea why (currently $5 on amazon).

Those are my orders for this week. I really can't wait for the Gundam volume at the end of this month.

---

From last month's releases I only remember getting Toradora 6, Dragon Ball Full Color Edition 1, Strike Witches 1, Deadman Wonderland and I think that was it....I did kinda go crazy and spend a bit on some stuff released long ago like Great Teacher Onizuka and Gintama. If anyone is interested on the size of the Dragon Ball color edition volume I can take some pictures next to a regular One Piece volume.

Long post xD

u/chocoboat · 3 pointsr/sailormoon

There are also two books of Sailor V manga.

There are several side stories in the Sailor Moon manga, which include Ami's First Love, The Lover of Princess Kaguya (basis for the S movie), and Chibiusa's Picture Diary (which includes the story of the vampire little girl that Chibiusa meets).

I'm pretty sure those are included in the Sailor Moon compilation books but I am not 100% certain of that.

If you're looking for more Sailor Moon content, there's the live-action show Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon (some people like it, I'm not one of them) and the Sailor Moon musicals (which do a great job of maintaining the look and feel of the show in live action). You can see some of them on Youtube, they're definitely worth at least checking out. The early ones with Anza are the best imo.

If you're into games, you might check out the SNES game Sailor Moon Another Story, there's a fan-translated version out there now. It contains a new storyline where a time traveler prevents the deaths of certain bad guys and lets them loose on the world again.

Finally, there's probably an episode of S that you haven't seen... it was produced for a Japan-only video game for little kids called Kotaete Moon Call. Sure it's a filler episode, but it's got some fun and entertaining moments in it.

u/812many · 4 pointsr/TrueAtheism

My hesitation definitely won't stop me from doing it, but there's something that definitely makes me nervous. You might be right that it's my imagination doing a bit of work on the back end. I grew up reading fantasy books and have always liked fantasy that took magic and religion and grouped them together. For me, a god you can pray to and invoke as a super-power is really cool (for example, The Rose of the Prophet trilogy by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman has a great setup of gods for their universe) and have always loved those types of fantastic stories.

u/ebooksgirl · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Wow, I just fell in love with the Chroma Worsted yarn Super too expensive for the silly stuff I usually crochet, though.

To top off your order, I'm loving the shine on Nebula.

I'd love to read this manga if I were to win.

Always be a Happy Hooker!

Sounds like he views reading as a chore and not a form of entertainment. It may be that he hasn't found a book that clicks with him yet. Try focusing on his interests. Does he have a favorite movie? If its been adapted from a book, it might keep his interest.

Take clues from how he spends his free time. What kind of games does he play? Both Halo and Warcraft have their own line of books. I think it boils down to he need to find reading entertaining, and only he will be able to make that distinction.

He are some choices to try out:

u/kaptain_carbon · 1 pointr/Metal

I am going to actually say you should not read Watchmen, which is usually high on people's list until you read more superhero stuff. the characters in that are superheroes cast in gritty realism.

Art / Graphic Novels

Maus -- very popular, very discussed, very good

Sandman -- Once you get over how 80's gothic this is, it is a superb story...for all 10 volumes.

TransMetropolitan -- Cyberpunk Hunter S Thompson

Fables -- Hands down one of the best series in terms of scope and planning.

Manga

Akira -- This will take you week to finish the whole series.

Pluto -- Though an actual knowledge of Astroboy would be wonderful for this, this manga is so good i was shocked at how sobering a manga could be.

Superhero

Batman -- I am going to break rank and say that Frank Miller's Batman miniseries The Dark Knight Returns isn't the best place to start atleast for Batman. It is a good read along with the Knightfall trilogy) but it is dense and famous becasue of when it was released. I am recommending Scott Snyder's new 52 Batman story arc Court of the Owls which is a two part arc edning with City of the Owls. This will also set you into current Batman. there are things that have happened before, the fight is against a new villian rather than an old one with tons of backstory. It is also drawn with style and grace and the whole thing is entertaining.

Green Lantern -- Rebirth -- This is completely one sided because I love Green Lantern and space shit. This is the beginning of the Geoff Johns run which will spill out into a huge decade long narrative culminating at The Blackest Night.

----------

As for other superheroes here are reading lists for DC and Marvel. It is really up to you what you find interesting. If you are into X-men, this podcast is really fun to get caught up with everything that has happened since the 70's. It is also hosted by a very knowledgeable husband and wife team.

u/Macabre_Octopus · 2 pointsr/ASKParanormal

There are two others I know, though they're a little less serious in tone, I still like them, very similar in style to the first one. They're both part of a series, with each book havbing a different focus.

http://www.amazon.com/Yokai-Attack-Japanese-Monster-Survival/dp/480531219X/ref=pd_sim_b_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=06K7ZZJJ5PGYF6CNB5CX

This one focuses on Yokai. These books are "survival guides" of a sort (like I said, less serious in tone), with each entry giving a description, a depiction, and a mothod for dealing with it. I enjoyed the lighter tone and the art, and it made for a quick read before bed.

http://www.amazon.com/Yurei-Attack-Japanese-Ghost-Survival/dp/4805312149/ref=pd_sim_b_3?ie=UTF8&refRID=06K7ZZJJ5PGYF6CNB5CX

This one focuses on Yurei (Japanese ghosts), and actually was the more informative of the two for me. Whereas the first book focused on different kinds of Yokai, this one focuses on famous ghosts and what they did.

I personally have a deep love of Yokai, for a number of reasons. They have a way of popping up throughout even modern culture, and the sheer amount of them makes them fun to research. Plus, I'm a huge horror fan (especially j-horror), and they occasionally pop up there too. I hope you enjoy the books, and maybe get interested in Yokai as a result!

u/psalt · 1 pointr/Berserk

>Ok so you want almost 40 books at once that about $10 USD each?

Yes? You don't need to buy them all at once, I didn't. I bought a few here and there until I caught up with Dark Horse's release schedule. You can still do the same, if you can find the books still in print.

>Even the 1st isn't reduced

Yes it is.

Volume 1

Volume 2

>there's doesn't seem be collectors box or any to get in bulk for a reduced cost or space

In the past, they have had trouble selling the current edition of Berserk. Why would they invest more money into new boxed sets and omnibuses when they don't think anyone will buy them. If you wanted some box set deal, Right Stuff did that a couple of years ago when the volumes were last reprinted. And is it really that hard to add items to a online shopping cart?

>Despite the movie being supposedly pirated so much, I rented from Amazon. Because I could. Can I can do that with the books... Well...you guess that

Let me be the first to congratulate you on renting a movie instead of pirating it. Anyway about the manga...

Hakusensha has been hesitant, like many Japanese publishers, to release its comics digitally. It was only within the last couple of years that they began digitally selling their manga and releasing a delayed digital version of their magazines. They have been hesitant because they feel that digital copies would be easier to pirate than physical books. It's a old school way of thinking, especially considering the lengths that people go through to pirate manga, but there is some truth to it. You can thank Evil Genius for helping to add to their fears by editing and distributing those digital copies for all to freely download.

Thanks EG. You're service has been invaluable once again, well done.

If you want to support Berserk by purchasing it digitally, you can go here. As far as Dark Horse goes, they have expressed interest in releasing Berserk digitally in the past, but as I said earlier Hakusensha has been slow to embrace digital sales. However if you think you are going to get a better deal because it's digital, you obviously have not purchased manga digitally before. You will probably only save a couple of dollars on each volume.

u/Dys_unemployed · 2 pointsr/Animey

Hey, I got you covered. So here's my strategy: try to minimize on the rupee per page. A general single volume manga would cost around 500 bucks, for essential 200 odd pages. Kinda too much, but ok given the value added compared to a general paperback. Also, given that you are starting a collection, you will most probably want to collect all the volumes i.e. complete the series. So it should preferably have lesser volumes. Based on that I recommend these

  • All you need is Kill
  • Planetes Vol 1 and Vol 2 (Note that Vol 2 is pretty costly, but i was able to snag it about 2 years ago for around 1000 bucks. I recommend you wait and check the prices. Till then you'll have volume 1)
  • Solanin
  • Death Note (This is an All in One edition, and for the price, it's a steal. That said, I am a little biased to the black edition that came out earlier. They looked cool, had three volumes each in a single volume and did I mention it looked cool?)
  • Satoshi Kon's Opus

If you're looking for manga series whose individual books contain a large number of pages, try searching "manga omnibus" or "manga all in one" on amazon. There's quite a few, and if you're willing to wait, you could wait for price drops (I recommend keepa.com to check and notify you for price drops on amazon.in)

Happy shopping, and let us know what you buy.
u/TheFerg714 · 7 pointsr/buffy

This is the officially canon, post-show comic list. There's more canon comics that take place during or before the shows, but this is everything that comes after. The only pre-show comics on here are the 'Tales' comics, but that's because Joss had direct involvement and they're awesome. They're a collection of shorts about past slayers and vampires. There are some reading order issues involved with Tales, so make sure you don't spoil yourself. The final two Tales of the Vampires stories take place during Season 8. Also, Fray takes place in the far future, but it MUST be read before Season 8.

  1. Tales of the Slayers / Tales of the Vampires aka 'Tales' (there's an "omnibus" version coming out in October)
  2. Fray
  3. Angel: After The Fall
  4. Spike: The Complete Series (optional, but recommended)
  5. Buffy: Season 8
  6. Season 9 (Buffy, Angel & Faith, Spike: A Dark Place, and Willow: Wonderland)
  7. Season 10 (Buffy and Angel & Faith)
  8. Season 11(Buffy, Angel, and Giles: Girl Blue) [feel free to not read Angel or Giles. They're both very bad]
  9. Season 12 (just Buffy. This is the final season)

And there's like a ridiculous amount of tangential "potentially canon" comics that I could tell you all about too. Feel free to ask me anything.

Kirima - Team's sarcastic waterbender, probably in her early 20s.

Lek - Youngest member of the group who is an earthbender from the Si Wong desert.

Lao Ge - Oldest member of the group. An Earthbending...assassin? Spiritual master? who is said to be at least several hundred years old.

Wong - Another earthbender in his 30s. Despite his protruding gut and generally bulky body, he is said to be quite silent

Loved what you saw and want to continue in the manga from where the anime left off? Start reading from page 11 of Chapter 26 though I'd recommended reading it from the beginning. The art alone is more than worth your time.

If you'd like to support the manga's official release in the west, you can preorder both Volumes 1 and 2 on Amazon.

Got rivers of money flowing out of your pockets and want to support the show more directly in the hopes of a second season a couple years down the line? Consider buying the two Japanese BD Boxes Here and Here. No, they don't come with English subtitles unfortunately.

All in all that was a phenomenal finale. Every aspect was wonderfully handled. You could feel the teams' passion not just in this episode, but in the whole project. You could tell they really wanted Made in Abyss to succeed as an anime and I'd say it has.

u/AzulHunter · 2 pointsr/MangaCollectors

Yeah I'll probably focus on finishing My Hero Academia first (or catching up to it at least) and then work my way through other stuff.

Right now the on going debate that I have with myself is that if I want to either buy the individual copies of the manga or if I want to go with the trade version of the manga.

For example:
Get the singles (or the bxo set of singles) https://www.amazon.com/Naruto-Vol-1-Uzumaki/dp/1569319006/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=Naruto+Manga&qid=1556685416&s=gateway&sr=8-5

or get the trade like the ones that have 3-4 in this giant ass book
Like this https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/naruto-masashi-kishimoto/1118028884?ean=9781421564753#/

I reckon I want to do the box sets and just do the individual ones instead of buying the trades of them.

Also, if English isn't your native I saw you said Spanish. I'm Mexican myself so you are more than welcome to speak spanish.

u/AlphaLiat · 7 pointsr/Boogiepop

From the standpoint of an anime-only viewer, I can see where you're coming from. I liked the first few episodes enough to pick up the first omnibus, and it makes SO much more sense in the novel. It's actually crazy how much is either skipped over, or not thoroughly explained in the anime. If you like the premise, I would recommend reading the light novel as I have. I think that it does the the story justice better than the show.

Also, in case you were wondering, the first Omnibus covers the first three novels, and through the current anime arc. The second one should be out on February 5th, much before VS Imaginator (the current arc) ends.

u/PrinceDakkar · 4 pointsr/AnimeDeals

A lot of these are pseudo-random/not in a particular order (like vol 20, 21, and 22), but there are often 2-3 in a series that qualify. I also found some (listed at the bottom) that weren't part of this deal but had coupons to use to get them for an immediate discount.

RWBY: Official Manga Anthology Vol. 1 & Vol. 3

Rurouni Kenshin Vol. 7: Includes vols. 19, 20 & 21 & Vol. 9

Dragon Ball omnibuses: Vol 5, Vol 13

Tokyo Ghoul: re, Vol. 11 & Vol. 8 & Vol. 13

Radiant Vol. 5 and Vol. 6 - Is this even technically a manga??

Mixed 3-for-2 and coupon deals within a series (but you should probably collect these series in their box sets to save money):

Bleach, Vol. 64 is $8.68 - $2.02 coupon.

Bleach, Vol. 68 & Vol. 69 & Vol. 70 & Vol. 73

Bleach Box Set 3: Includes vols. 49-74

Naruto (3-in-1 Edition), Vol. 23: Includes vols. 67, 68 & 69 is part of the 3 for 2 deal.

Naruto, Vol. 67 is part of the 3 for 2 deal.

Naruto, Vol. 72 is $8.45 - $1.79 coupon.

One Piece, Vol. 77 is part of the 3 for 2 deal.

One Piece, Vol. 78 is $8.36 - $1.70 coupon. Same price as vol 76.

I highly recommend it. If you've seen the movie Edge of Tomorrow you know the basic premise of the story. While the premise of the manga remains the same, the storyline is different. Both are great though and I highly recommend reading it. And yes, the omnibus is a two in one, you get both volumes of the series in one book.

u/Kurben1 · 1 pointr/anime

The books are where it's at for Boogiepop. The anime adaptation isn't very good but I've read a little bit of the novels and they're great! The first couple of books were just re-released. You can buy books 1-3 in an omnibus on amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Boogiepop-Omnibus-Vol-Light-Novel/dp/1626929173

If you want to know more I suggest Digibro's video comparing the anime vs the light novel.

u/AlphaTheRed · 2 pointsr/Fantasy

It is. It makes no attempts to be a happy story or a traditional victorious plot or ending, and manages this dark and brooding tone that not much fantasy fiction can manage well.

If you're digging into older Weiss and Hickman, a lot of people like the Deathgate Cycle, but the true underappreciated gem is the Rose of the Prophet trilogy. I highly recommend it.

And the whole thing is available in a compendium book!

Barnes and Noble links will also let you check to see if local stores have the books in stock. I'd also suggest checking your local independent bookstores. They really appreciate the business.

Here are some fantasy/sci-fi books that I liked at that age, or would have liked had they been published. A couple of them have some sexual content, but nothing overly detailed.

DEFINITELY "The Dark is Rising" series. They're short, but excellent. Also The Hunger Games is a good bet (never read the sequels, but that first book is great). Other suggestions: The Name of the Wind, Waylander, Rose of the Prophet, 1984, To Your Scattered Bodies Go, The Strain, any of the Dragonlance books (I would start at the beginning, with Dragons of Autumn Twilight), or nearly anything by Stephen King.

u/jpdumal · 1 pointr/anime

If you're into science fiction thriller, I would recommend Pluto by Naoki Urasawa (20th Century Boys, Monster). It's based off of a story arc from Astro Boy and it's only 8 volumes. Awesome manga :)

u/angelworks · 3 pointsr/books

Hey! I like graphic novels to, and might I suggest you look across the aisle and look at some Manga? Death Note is just pure awesomeness (guy gets a notebook that can kill people just by writing their names in it. Some great Chessmaster type plots unfold as master detective L tries to hunt him down).

Black Butler.

Those two series are popular enough that you can easily find them in a well-stocked public library. (Mine has them filed in non-fiction next to the art books for some reason, as well as a few in the youth section... ) Anyway, you should totally give some manga a try!

u/esterve · 1 pointr/manga

<Me and the Devil Blues> has a black protagonist, not sure if it's been licensed though. Afro Samurai is a pretty good anime if she's willing to try that out (I don't think anyone's translated the manga). I'd have to get back to you on the college manga, cos all I can think of are high school ones. I think FMA is a really safe bet though, definitely give her that.

I think the popular buys nowadays are Tokyo Ghoul and Attack on Titan though, if you want to try those. Oh, and if she's going to Ireland, The Ancient Magus' Bride takes a lot of mythology from around that area (like Gaelic and Anglo-Saxon).

u/jujicakes · 2 pointsr/MakeupAddiction

There are five total seasons - Classic, R, S, SuperS, and StarS.

Stars was not released in America due to licensing and censorship issues, as in the last few episodes there is quite a bit of nudity. If you did not know, there was quite a bit of heavy editing in the American releases - buttcrack lines, Uranus and Neptune's relationship, boob outlines, panty shots - tons of stuff.

Here is the wikipedia page with a synopsis of the season, etc. There is a TON of character development and it wraps up the story quite nicely.

If you haven't read the manga, I highly suggest it. You can get the first six in a nice box set and I believe there's a second set as well. Codename wa Sailor V was released two years ago in English for the first time as well. :D

The only other things you could be missing re. Sailor Moon media:

Sailor V Series

Codename Sailor V: Vol. 1

Codename Sailor V: Vol. 2

These two detail Sailor Venus' life as the first Sailor Senshi, prior to the events of Sailor Moon. Some of it was actually published prior to Sailor Moon's creation, so, it's kind of fun on that front.

The Short Stories Collection:

Short Stories 1

Short Stories 2

Companion to the Sailor Moon Manga, mostly cute little short stories about the characters :) A couple of them made it into the series as "specials" or in the case of Luna's story, a movie.

For the complete Manga:

Box Set 1

Box Set 2

Other media besides Crystal/Sailor Moon would be the three movies that accompany three of the seasons, Sailor Moon R Promise of the Rose is the only one available for sale right now though. There's one for S and one for SuperS as well.

If you really want to get deep into the media weeds, there are also the Art Books and Material collections :) :D

EDIT: There's also Sailor Moon: another story, the video game for SNES, but that's near impossible to get your hands on...

While the 2 spike books arnt written by Joss he commissioned Brian to write them for him so they do matter!

u/Tickleberry · 2 pointsr/graphicnovels

Get the Legendary Edition volumes. They're larger trim with color pages, exclusive content and contain 2 regular volumes in 1 so they're 360-400 pages each as opposed to the 180 page singles. They're about $11-$12 each online from rightstuf.com and there's going to be 5 of them. They're still releasing them but 4 of the 5 are already out.

Here's the first volume, you can try it yourself to see if you like it without spending a bunch.

https://www.amazon.com/Legend-Zelda-Ocarina-Legendary-Legendary/dp/1421589591/ref=pd_sim_14_5?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=1421589591&pd_rd_r=WEEC4E3JXQTRA2M301GX&pd_rd_w=2j09D&pd_rd_wg=QFd3p&psc=1&refRID=WEEC4E3JXQTRA2M301GX

The Legendary Edition is the definitive release, it'll cost around $60 for all 5 while the box set costs $45. The larger size, color pages and exclusive content makes it worth the extra money Imo.

u/Screammare · 2 pointsr/TokyoGhoul

It would be better to spend some money and get the volume in a legal way so you can support the creator of the series. This post feels very inappropiate and disrespectful.

u/Ryzza36 · 1 pointr/manga

It's always expensive here in Australia unfortunately, matey potatey. $14 is actually on the cheaper end of the scale to be honest.

I know of a site that you can use to compare prices for books, and I looked up Tokyo Ghoul for you, and the $14-16 range is looking like your best bet for new.

If you're willing to try Amazon, it's here for $3 apparently, but that's not including shipping.

You might be able to find a eBook, they could be cheaper.

And if you don't care about physically collecting it, and...y'know, technically committing a 'crime', you could always just read the scanlations on MangaDex. Don't worry, you won't be arrested. We all do it here.

Do not buy that collection if you cannot read Japaneses!!! There currently is no box set for English yet (at least none I am aware of) so just buy the single volumes from amazon or your local book store. AoT is crazy popular and most book stores will have some in stock.

Examples of what you should buy:

I found that buying them from amazon is the easiest/cheapest way.

If you are willing to try something new there is a manga/graphic novel I know. It has elements of horror, tragedy, psychological mystery, and supernatural. It also has brilliant foreshadowing and plot development.

Tokyo Ghoul

Dude, that seems really high for the cover damage . For $6 more you can get this new on Amazon. Also, someone could get volume 3 new for less.

Actually bro All You Need is Kill Omnibus at Amazon is $8.99, which beats RightStuf's price.

  1. You could order from Tokopedia and let the seller worry about the import bureaucracy. You paid, you wait, then you read it. Best option if you don't have any credit card or visa/master card.
  2. You could order it from Amazon and do the import bureaucracy yourself. Should be cheaper from Tokped.
  3. If you hate waiting , hate import bureaucracy, and don't mind not having physical copy, you could try the ebook version from Amazon.

There are 5 volume, th 6th one will be on June 4th 2019.
