🎓 Reddit experts on fitness planners
The comments and opinions expressed on this page are written exclusively by redditors. To provide you with the most relevant data, we sourced opinions from the most knowledgeable Reddit users based the total number of upvotes and downvotes received across comments on subreddits where fitness planners are discussed. For your reference and for the sake of transparency, here are the specialists whose opinions mattered the most in our ranking.
It’s not as important what you do, just as long as you do something. Like the comments before me, they’ve found what motivates them, other tricks to push you through when motivation lulls. There’s so many routines and advice online that I also get overwhelmed and didn’t know where to start. So don’t feel paralyzed by choosing the “right” option cuz there isn’t one. Here were a few things that worked me (mostly mental!):
Good luck!
Cheer up buttercup!
I know it's not ideal, and I hope you are feeling better, but at least it's still exciting news!!

My latest obsession has become my health! I think I've been eating too many of my sister's yummy treats and I gained a good 10 pounds. When I looked in the mirror, I felt like a manatee and decided that it is time to do something about that! I've had self-esteem issues for quite some time so seeing that I'd gained (what feels like a ton) those ten pounds really made them go over the edge... then my mother was diagnosed with cancer back in November and I realize now that nothing is more important than being in good shape and most importantly- in good health. I've been going to the gym, eating right, but I occasionally still cave and do not follow the strict regime that I'm on...but I think this book would help me!! :D <3 <3 Becoming the better-best me is something that will never fully be accomplished- but working on it daily will get me there- to a great spot, and I'm so excited and happy for that. (I am also really trying to get a flat belly...why is that sooooo hard?!?!) :P
3.14!
<3 Thank you so much for the contest and contributing to everyone's latest obsession!! :D
I just bought an actual fitness log for lifting. Like this. Honestly, if you're wanting to track lifting and try to increase your weight, you might want that type of log. Idk if you're the same, but I absolutely would not want to take my regular bullet journal to the gym lol! And there wouldn't be enough space in it to regularly track exercises and reps and weight anyway 😊
Long post alert!!! I was the same way. I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety a year ago and gained 50 pounds that I’m now trying to lose. I never stepped foot in a gym. On the other hand, my husband was a collegiate athlete, is a certified personal trainer, is in the military, and bodybuilding is his hobby. He goes to the gym at 5am every morning. So essentially, we are complete opposites.
He took me to the gym every day when we both had a week off during a recent military move. He showed me how to use the machines and wrote a little workout plan for me – simple, like do a push machine, then a pull machine, then a leg machine, etc. He even showed me just how to use a treadmill. I was so anxious because I seriously had never been to a gym and was intimidated by all the extremely fit military men and women at our gym. I didn’t even know what buttons to use on a treadmill. Now, I am able to go to the gym by myself while he’s at work and do 30 mins machines/30 mins cardio without him. Even on days where I feel anxious and just walk on the treadmill for an hour I’m proud of myself for physically getting myself to the gym without him.
If you feel comfortable doing the same thing, I would 100% suggest it. To me, his extreme act of patience and coaching was one of the greatest demonstrations of love, since his usual routine is squatting with 300 pounds and other crazy stuff and he spent the time to show me how to set up the leg extension machine to lift 20 pounds. He never got frustrated with me or made me feel embarrassed. Just knowing how to physically use each machine made me more confident in the gym.
If you don’t think he would like that, I would suggest hiring a personal trainer that works for the gym or a certified trainer in your area. You don’t have to book him/her as a regular thing, maybe just work something out where they can help your fiancé establish comfort and confidence in the gym.
I also bought these workout journals to help keep track so I don’t feel so bewildered without a routine. In the beginning, my husband would fill it out for me as a pre-plan so I would know how to alternate machines.
I hope this helps! Besides knowing how to use the machines, the other thing that eased my anxiety is noticing that when I’m in the gym, nobody is paying attention to me – everybody is way too focused on their own routine.
We also have gym dates together every Saturday and Sunday and I look forward to them. I hate when we miss them! It’s the only time on the weekend we can workout together. He goes off and does his bodybuilding stuff and I stick to my own beginners workout, but I usually ask him to show me how to do 1-2 new things. This ranges from TRX ropes, to medicine ball workouts, to machines I’ve never used and feel scared of!

We were talking about the same thing :)
I had to exercise but I havent been to the gym 1 day. I started with bodyweight exercises. The link for the poster is below.
([poster](http://QuickFit Bodyweight Workout Exercise Poster - Body Weight Workout Chart - Calisthenics Routine - (Laminated, 18" x 27") https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07NJ8SFPZ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Rss2DbB5D59KK)
I slowly moved to kettlebells and then dumbdells. Id reward myself each week by buying another weight.
I had the beer gut and that didnt budge until I started working out and running. I prob lost 30lbs then it stopped. I stepped up the workouts to 5 days a week. And I started running 3 miles a day. It started dropping off again.
Cardio def improves stamina (if thats important to you) you can go harder longer so it helped BIG TIME with my goals.
I didnt see any toning until I started resistance bands. (Highly recommend) you should def own a pair of those!
How about a Fitness and Nutrition Journal? This seems perfect for the people who a really organized, and work better when they make lists.

If you really want to understand nutrition, and not just listen to what (mostly unqualified) people tell you what they think nutrition is, read a physiology text book.
You can buy old textbooks pretty cheap of ebay. These are texts designed for undergraduates with limited knowledge of biology (usually just bio 101). Even if you haven't had a bio101 type class, if you read the first two chapters it should tell you everything you need to know to understand the rest of the book.
If you understand the physiology, then you can easily deduce proper nutrition without having to listen to someone else.
Human Physiology
Exercise Metabolism
I had that machine for a few years and loved it. I bought the Total Gym Wall Chart to do exercises.

Maybe you would be interested in a Fit Book?
Back when I had a trainer or did things on my own I found this to be really useful:
https://www.amazon.com/BodyMinder-Workout-Excercise-Journal/dp/B009K6W576
I recently tried bujo and it just wasn't for me. Too much time to decide on a layout I wanted, and it not to look like garbage. Also, I don't really track workouts because my gym tells me what to do and I just do it. I write down PRs in a regular notebook.
For your wife's needs, I'd consider spending some money on a set of dumbbells. There are a ton of different exercises you can do with them to get a full body workout. To me, those machines look cheap and won't hold value.
Here is a poster of dumbbell exercises:

These laminated posters have the most comprehensive ring exercise diagrams I've found.
Tis' my workout history.
What about this?
