It's definitely enough for a nice knife, though you might want to go a bit higher for a great knife. The KaBar BK2 is actually designed with things like batoning (hammering the knife through wood as a kind of faux hatchet using another piece of wood against the blade of the knife as the hammer itself) or chopping. It's a bit over $60, currently available for $69 to be precise, but as long as you don't flat out abuse it (prying heavy things, for example) it'll serve you well and quite possibly for the rest of your natural life.

At a lower price, you can get the Condor Bushlore, which at $35 is a perfectly valid choice that will serve you well indeed.

For an even lower price yet, the Mora Heavy Companion is from one of those few cheaper knife companies that does incredible work. I wouldn't baton with it, honestly, but even if you did it'd probably hold up just fine.

At a more expensive range, the Ontario Rat-5 is an amazing bushcraft knife. The Fallkniven Pilot Survival Knife is also an amazing knife. The Benchmade Bone Collector is spectacular knife made in D2 tool steel, one of the better steels available at that price. Another amazing knife is the Spyderco Bushcraft made in O1 tool steel. Finally, the Benchmade 162 is a pretty amazing knife.

One thing you'll notice about all of these knives with the exception of the Pilot Survival knife and the BM 162 is that they're all carbon steel knives. Carbon steel is a lot tougher than stainless (with a few very, very rare exceptions I'd never trust a long knife to be stainless steel) with the trade off of being a lot more of a hassle to take care of, since it needs to be regularly cleaned and oiled.

If you want a fire starter, carry a magnesium fire starter. With the carbon steel knives, you can probably strike it against the back of the blade to create the sparks you'll want and if not (like with some of the coated ones) you'll be carrying the striker anyway.

For sharpening, you'll want to get a decent sharpening setup and start stropping. A couple of easy sharpening systems would be the superior Spyderco Sharpermaker (usually available on Amazon around the $50 mark) or the Lansky Sharpening system which while cheaper isn't as good. You could take the time to learn how to free hand it, but most casual users don't care that much because it takes a long time to get proficient at freehand sharpening. Stropping is running the blade against something like smooth leather (usually smooth leather, actually) to remove burrs along the blade of a knife made by use and sharpening and the restore a blade to a better edge without removing metal. Stropping allows for a level of sharpness unachievable by sharpening alone and extends a knife's lifetime by allowing sharpness to be achieved for longer without removing metal from the blade. To learn how to strop, watch videos on YouTube or check out guides from the sidebar of /r/knives.

Finally, if you want a whistle, just carry a whistle. If you want a mirror for signaling, carry a small signaling mirror or mirror polish the knife you buy (a process where you sand the blade with increasing grit level sandpaper until it shines like the sun and you can see yourself in the blade).

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

Hi! And welcome!

I like the Gayle Bradley 2 in M4, and the BM Valet in M390, but they are both very expensive to start out with. The Shuffle II is kind of crappy - I'd definitely pass on that one. I have no experience with
the Bartender Defeder, but even the XL version looks too small, as is the Rodie. The Delica and Leek are great knives, and would likely be solid options (their ergonomics are better than their handle lengths suggest, especially the Delica). The CRKT M16 is ok, but it's not great (in my opinion). I've never handled CRKT's Endorser, but it looks like a solid choice.

My best suggestion is a RAT 1 in D2. It's 40 bucks and you get a very well-made knife in D2 (semi stain resistant and will hold an edge for a good long time). The AUS-8 version is good, too, but if you're cutting boxes, the D2 option will stay sharp way longer.

As for some other options, here are some good ones from CRKT:

Foresight - It's big and comfy in-hand, but it's expensive for the materials used (aluminum and AUS-8)

Shenanigan - lighter and cheaper than the Foresight, but with the same blade material (AUS-8)

Outrage - aluminum handle and 8Cr13MoV steel (similar to AUS-8, id est, reasonably stainless, decent toughness, ok-ish edge retention), ball bearing pivot (nice and smooth!)

Ripple - aluminum handle, 8Cr13MoV blade, ball bearing pivot

With these suggestions, it may seem like I'm a shill for CRKT, but I'm not. I'm just a fan of Ken Onion's designs and ergonomics. I also like:

Spyderco Endura - very good stainless steel in a lightweight package, with plenty of handle real estate

Byrd Cara Cara 2 - Spyderco's value brand (basically a cheap Endura with 8Cr13MoV steel instead of the excellent blade steel VG-10)

Spyderco Resilience - big and comfy (G-10 scales with 8Cr13Mov steel), and my daily carry at work

Spyderco Manix 2 - light and medium sized (they also make an XL version), with BD-1 (kinda similar to AUS-8, kinda)

Cold Steel Recon 1 Spear Point - a big knife with lots of grippy G-10 handle space. The CTS XHP steel is the bee's knees, and the Recon 1 is an excellent value, but it may be too expensive as a starting point.

Also, I'm sure some other folks will chime in, too. The guys & gals of /r/knifeclub are pretty knowledgeable and helpful.

Again, my number 1 suggestion is the RAT 1 in D2. It'll be hard to beat interms of construction, ergonomics, and utility.

Happy hunting!

A good knife that you can own the rest of your life that has a great warranty. Ahh..$50 is only the tip of the iceberg..

Benchmade, Spyderco, Zero Tolerance, and Kershaw all make beautiful knives.. many within your price range. Don't feel foolish wanting a solid knife that costs money because if you venture into r/knifeclub you will see how deep the hole gets for knives.

Give me a minute and I will link you a spreadsheet with some useful information but in the meantime I will leave you with something beautiful to drool at..

Benchmade Knife 15080-2 Crooked River Folding Hunter Wood Handle https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01BUWW4WS/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_UZhFxbYS3ST5A

That knife is next on my list to buy.. it is absolutely gorgeous and Benchmade makes wonderful knives..as far as budget picks go the Griptilian is great and for the higher end I love my 940-1! I know fixed blades have your attention so give me a few to dig some info up.

If you still want a Buck then go for it because they hold a special place in many enthusiasts hearts as they were one of the originals that helped shape the knife market into what it is today.

u/900_year_old_vampire · 10 pointsr/knifeclub

in my opinion, once you get above like ~$250, you arent really getting any better in quality. just different designs, brand names, etc.

my advice is get him a benchmade 940 and be done with it. thats easily the nicest and most popular "expensive, but worth it because its actually really really nice" pocket knife. that company has great customer service and warrenty as well - part of that price tag is the fact that at any point for the rest of his life, if anything goes wrong with it, he can just ship it off to benchmade HQ and they will take care of it and send it back for free. it's a great high quality pocket knife that he will have forever, unless he sells it.

if you think he might like something a little smaller and dressier, the north fork is the same caliber.

another option that's ridiculously popular is the spyderco paramilitary 2

these are all equally high quality knives that are great for every day carry. choosing between them is just personal preference really

u/toxiclimeade · 3 pointsr/knifeclub

I don't own one, but I have purchased a similar knife and been completely underwhelmed. If you want a short explanation as to why, watch this .
Long explanation: I got a BM 162 Bushcrafter back when I first got into knives as my ultimate bushcraft/survival knife. Since then I have found that there is a lot more out there for a lot less money. First thing I learned is, and /r/bushcraft can vouch for me, one knife is not a good idea. This doesn't mean buy a bunch of knives, it means consider the environment you live in first when you buy a bc knife. If you live in Sweden, you probably want a small knife for detailing woodwork and an ax to get processable wood. If you live in Florida, you may want a stainless machete. Often times however, it is definitely worth it to get a knife in tool steel/carbon steel. The risk/annoyance of rust is far outweighed by how easy it is to sharpen the blade, and how much more durable it is. My 162 that I mentioned earlier is in s30v, some people consider that a "super steel", and it dulled just as fast as my condor bushlore in 1075, which was 150$ less. Whats worse, is my bushlore can be sharpened on any stone, a brick, or stropped on my belt. I cannot do this with my 162, I have to take it home and put a lot of work into getting it sharp again. VG-10 is obviously not the same as s30v, but the disadvantages remain. A lot of people really hate the handle for the f1 and I know a bunch of people on /r/bushcraft that have purchased this knife, and traded it for something in carbon steel. If you live in the fuckin amazon jungle, by all means get stainless. I just know that many people, myself included, prefer rubbing off a rust spot every once in a blue moon to a knife that dulls fast, and dulls in a way that can be potentially harder to repair.
There are other knives for about the same price or for cheaper, but first I will recommend this: If this is your first bc/survival knife, spend $15 on a Mora. This isn't the best knife, BUT, it's fantastic for its price and it will help you learn what you like and don't like in a knife. It won't tell you what knife is best for you, but it gives you a lot more information to work with than you currently have. Like I mentioned earlier, it is important to know what kind of cutting tool set up you need. If you want a knife to throw in your backpack in case you get stranded, there's a million knives that will do the trick. If you want to get out every other weekend and make shelters for fun, check out /r/bushcraft, and see what other people carry, why they carry it and how it could work for you. I for instance usually take a fiskars hatchet, an opinel #8 and a condor bushlore out with me. The hatchet allows me to chop down sapplings or dead wood, the bushlore allows me to process the wood into various sizes, and the opinel allows me to make fine shavings to start fires with.

Other knives to consider:
Multi Purpose Survival type knives:
Esee 3,4,5,6, all of these but the 5 (don't ask me why the chose 5 to be different im confused too) are flat grind, micarta handled, 1095 carbon steel, utilitarian survival/tactical knives. This brand is legendary because you can saw the knife in half and they will replace it for you, these are possibly the toughest fixed blades on the market and I'm kinda mad I don't have one yet, here's their website, most of these are between $99 and $150, imo, the four is the best size for all around use.

Tops BOB, is a modified scandi grind micarta handled medium size survival/bushcraft knife in 1085 carbon (slightly softer than the esee 1095), they're about $110 on amazon.

LT Wright makes custom knives, they have a few models that aren't custom. The [HC Bushcrafter] (https://ltwrightknives.com/bushcrafter-hc.html) is a flat grind 1075 carbon steel tradtional style bushcraft knife, the page I linked you to has a review video on it I think, the knife is $75 without a sheath, about $100 with a sheath, unless you get a cheaper sheath elsewhere.

Bark River Knives are pretty legendary as well, these start to get as expensive or more expensive than the Falkniven. Look at these once you're absolutely sure what you want, this is as custom as you can get without making one yourself, many of them are made with super steels like 3v and Elmax.

The Spyderco Bushcrafter is an o1 tool steel scandi grind traditional style bushcraft knife. Its kinda ugly imo but it might not be to you, its also kinda pricy, it costs about the same as your falkniven.

Condor and Mora are your best budget brands, if you want to wait a bit, Mora is coming out with a higher end Bushcraft knife in Sandvik Stainless I believe, I know I spoke bad of stainless, they may come out with a carbon version. Condor makes a wide variety of hunting/bushcraft knives for a pretty decent price. A lot of their knives are 1075 carbon, I have their Bushlore model and its one of my favorites, it was 40$ I think.

TL;DR: There's A LOT of better options out there, I won't recommend anyone knife, you should go about choosing any knife for outdoor use by looking at the environment you will be using it in, and buying multiple cutting tools of different sizes for different uses.

PS: Don't ask /r/bushcraft or /r/survival outright what knife you should get outright, they get annoyed.

u/orogeny · 2 pointsr/DIY

Check your local laws on knife size. A lot of states and even some municipalities ban blades over 3 inches for carrying around concealed in your jeans pocket.

I sub to /r/knives and yeah, it is a scary part of the hivemind a lot of the time. Baseless brand loyalty and inane comments daily I'm not really sure about the fetish for wrapping knives they have at the moment. I personally carry a Benchmade on my person daily. Its a utility knife and I am not afraid to beat it up. The shape is good for a variety of tasks I encounter on a daily basis, box cutting, rope cutting, cutting fruit, punching through drywall when running cables, opening things, and the handle subs as a nice bottle opener.

Find a knife that you like the blade shape for your general applications and that fits well in your hand. As far as steel goes, you will want stainless for low maintenance. Carbon steels are great but upkeep on a daily carry can get rough. There are many locking technologies but you want to be sure you get a good one as having a folder collapse on your hand is not a fun thought. I personally like a lot that Spyderco offers, as well as Kershaw. Benchmades Axis lock inspires confidence that the blade wont snap out of place. I had to downsize from a Kershaw I was using when my state passed a law banning knives over 3 inches long or with assisted opening. You really cant go wrong with Spyder, benchmade, or Kershaw. They all are built to last and while there are other better/higher priced knives, generally those are not suited to a DIY utility purpose.

A couple of suggestions before I leave...

Kershaw Blur-Good Value

Benchmade Rift-Axis Lock/Tough

Finding your perfect pocket knife can be as hard or as easy as you like. I see no reason you cant go to Gander Mountain/Cabelas and find one that suits you right. If money is no object like you say, try a few knives out. You wont know until you feel it in your hand.

u/SlightFresnel · 1 pointr/askgaybros

Trust me, if you have the foresight to think you might be weird or awkward going off to college, you're far from it and you'll fit right in.

That being said, I don't see why you couldn't date college guys, in general you're probably pretty safe in a college town- lots of other young people just looking for something casual or dating at a level you'll probably find comfortable. On first meets, however, meet somewhere public- it can be on campus, but it's probably easiest to make it somewhere you can grab something to drink or eat and that way you guys can talk briefly (and it gives you a safe out if you're not interested after meeting- plenty of people around when you tell him you're rethinking doing anything). Always text a friend with his info and what you know about him- name, age, a pic, phone number, etc. And tell them you'll text back in a few hours. That way if you don't, they can take the info to the police or your parents if you go missing.

It's not a pleasant thought, but it's rational- get yourself a knife (folding type) you can carry in your pocket. 3" or smaller and you're pretty much safe anywhere to carry it besides government buildings or inside school. It could make a big difference if a bigger guy is cornering you, or you find yourself hogtied in the trunk of a car. You'll never actually need it, but peace of mind is a powerful thing. Other than that, just don't be stupid- think for yourself and don't just blindly go along with what he's saying because you don't want to offend him- if it doesn't feel right, get out of there.

Just picked up this bad boy for day to day carrying, it's nice and compact, I don't even notice it in my pocket.

u/rollingalong · 3 pointsr/knives

Wow, perfect timing. I just got a knife that meets this description perfectly. You'd have to go a little more than $100 (Amazon has is for $110-ish), but I'm loving it so far.

It's the Benchmade 707 Sequel. It has a 2.95" 154CM blade, manual single-handed opening w/ AXIS lock, and it's 2.6 oz.

Here's the link to the gallery/review of the knife: http://imgur.com/a/AWt08#0

That said, those Spyderco offerings that others are recommending are very good as well. You can't really go wrong here.

EDIT: Depending on your needs, you may prefer the Mini-Griptilian to the Sequel. The Mini-Grip has an almost identical blade (unless you opt for a non-standard configuration with a different blade shape or steel; you can get a black tanto combo-edge in S30V if you like, but it'll cost more) and it's cheaper than the 707. It's more of a practical, kick-ass outside knife, while the Sequel is a classy but capable EDC. Once again, these knives are all EXCELLENT offerings.

EDIT 2: Linked both knives for you.

u/ARKnife · 1 pointr/knives

If you like Benchmade folders and enjoy the outdoors - I'd recommend the Benchmade Crooked River from their Hunt series.

It is a great knife that has the awesome classic looks but will also perform when needed, keep a good edge and is generally very reliable.

Because it relies on springs (like other Bencmade knives with the Axis lock) it probably won't last forever, but Benchmade have good warranty service and you could always use that if needed.

Good luck!

u/chuckthetruk · 2 pointsr/knives

I own a Sebenza, and it definitely falls into the BIFL category, but so do a lot of other less expensive knives. Think of weak points that could break. Benchmades are great (I have two and like them both) but those little omega springs that the lock depends on are pretty frail looking.

I would get a framelock folder with solid metallic scales (most likely titanium, given what's out there) that has a stainless steel blade that is fairly robust. The Bradley Alias fits that bill, and so does the Spyderco Sage 2 although it has a pretty small blade. The A.G. Russell Acies is also good, but it's getting up there in price again.

With all that being said, you don't necessary NEED a titanium framelock, there is just less stuff on them that can break (like, say G10 scales over stainless liners). There are lots of high quality knives available that are not titanium framelocks.

u/ajore22 · 3 pointsr/knives

The term I think you're looking for is "lockback".

The Byrd knives are a great value, but I think the overall quality is lacking.

Now, my personal recommendation: it's a little bit smaller than you said you wanted, and a bit over your price, but absolutely worth every penny. The Spyderco Dragonfly SS, I own the FRN version and I love it. I've forgotten it's in my pocket several times and I grab another knife before I leave the house. I have had no trouble taking on tasks that probably need a bigger blade. I know steel isn't a major concern to you, but the steel it has is pretty good at holding a good edge. Definitely one of the better small folders on the market in my opinion.

Edit: found the Amazon link $42, just a hair over your price.

u/PhenomenalDouche · 4 pointsr/knifeclub

Some suggestions:

ZT 0770cf ($131 on Amazon) - thin and light, my favorite ZT for actual carry

Spyderco Sage 2 ($148 on Amazon) - great fit and finish, full ti frame lock with great ergos if you're into finger choils

Benchmade 710 ($153 on Amazon) one of my all time favorite Benchmade knives, a big knife with an axis lock that carries very well for its size

Spyderco Caly 3.5 CF/ZDP-189 ($153 on Amazon) - one of the better-carrying large Spyderco knives I've used

Spyderco Gayle Bradley CF - big hunk of CPM-M4, and a great choice if you don't mind the size and weight of the thing

u/davkslim · 2 pointsr/knives

I just saw this here for slightly over $60 once you factor in shipping but I personally have one of them and I can say that it's got a really strong firing/opening mechanism and solid lockup. It's a little heavy but it's also a really beefy knife and the G-10 on this knife is excellent. If you don't mind spending more (~$120), I highly recommend the Spyderco Caly 3 in laminated ZDP-189 steel.

Hope this helps!

u/lloganwebb · 2 pointsr/knifeclub

Maybe a Spyderco Native? I wanna say these come in S35VN which is a pretty good steel.

I'd also consider the Mini Grip although that shipping time is atrocious. These come in 154CM.

A little beefier than a Delica and above your budget but I gotta recommend the HK Axis. I've heard that people don't like the mini's quite as much as the full size model but I take it you like the smaller side of things.

Just kinda poked around for some stuff I like on Amazon.ca. Good luck finding something!

u/Craig · 2 pointsr/knifeclub

I sort of lost control and got the Caly3 (it is amazing), but if I had managed to stay with a sane budget, it would have been the dragonfly for sure.

Edit: having read through all of your comments, it looks like you really prefer the ambitious. You should get it. Don't let the liner lock or the steel dissuade you; they will both get the job done. An edc pocket knife is a personal choice - you should get the one you want. When I don't carry the Caly3, I typically have a SanRenMu that has the same steel as the Ambitious, and it is great.

u/Syncharmony · 2 pointsr/knifeclub

This is the cheapest ti-frame lock I've found HK Conspiracy. They call it a mono-lock, but it sure looks like a frame lock to me. Here's a video review Honestly, I've never seen it or used it and can't attest to it's quality or the steel quality.

Next cheapest for a full titanium knife with frame lock that I've found is the Spyderco Sage 2 That's closer to $150, but it might be worth pinching some pennies and waiting to get that. You get Spyderco Taichung fit and finish, a tried and true form factor with the Sage series and S30V steel.

u/ANAL_PLUNDERING · 11 pointsr/knives

No problem.

Kershaw Scallion (Small, assisted opening, steel is not so great)

Kershaw Skyline (good size, G10, nice blade shape, steel can get to a crazy level of sharpness)

Kershaw OSO Sweet (pretty cool assisted opener, great price there on amazon)

Spyderco Tenacious (same decent steel on the OSO Sweet and Byrd, good G10, good blade shape, Spyderco quality, great value)

Byrd Cara2 (Great value, overseas production brings prices way down on all Byrd knives)

Here is one above your price range

And one below your price range

u/smellslikepurple233 · 1 pointr/knives

I'm going to recommend a folder just b/c he'll probably carry it more than a fixed blade. If he's going to use it for cleaning game, I would recommend something with pillar construction (two slabs for the handle, spacers in between) so that he can easily rinse out the mess. If you want a quality knife, it should have quality steel and quality handle materials. G10 is great, Titanium is great, and Bone is really expensive with those prerequisites. With that in mind, I offer spyerco sage 1, spyderco sage 2, spyderco paramilitary 2, DPX HEST, zero tolerance 0200, and the spyderco military. The military is slightly over budget but it's pretty sexy.

u/T_Riley · 2 pointsr/knives

My personal favorite folder, that I carry with me everyday is the Spyderco Native. It has the same blade length as the Chill, but it's a little fatter. Absolutely love this knife. It fits perfectly in my hand and has never felt small. A great choice for a folding knife in my opinion.

u/firitheryn · 5 pointsr/knives

I normally don't like making recommendations without more information, including what state you live in, however the way your question is asked makes me believe you may not have extensive experience. First if your state law allows this size carry I recommend Spyderco Endura. If that size is not allowed, then Spyderco Delica. These are both primo knives for the price. They are underwhelming at first look but after a few weeks of carry, you will feel like you have fallen in love with the most stable happy partner of your life.

u/TwoStepsFromThursday · 3 pointsr/knives

Any Option from Benchmade is a great choice. Solid knives with a fantastic warranty.

If you want to avoid plastic, try the Crooked River series Beautiful knives, great steel, etc. They just released the mini version as well, so if the one linked above is too big, try the mini as well. Another small option is the North Fork

The other option I'd recommend considering is the Spyderco Para Military 2 It's one of THE classic folders of our time, and can be had in pretty much every high-quality steel; the SV110 model I linked is absolutely top of the line. It will hold an edge for an incredibly long time. I prefer some of the other steels such as S30V due to them being slightly easier to sharpen, but they'll all hold up well.

u/RandyGraves · 2 pointsr/knives

I would second the Delica recommendation. Amazon has a Delica 4 ffg in Purple that would do nicely. The Dragonfly 2 in a very dark green frn and a yellow H1 salt frn would be great as well. Great gift idea man!

I recommend saving another $20 and springing for a Spyderco Dragonfly 2 In H1. Light as a feather, legal nearly everywhere, nigh invulnerable (like The Tick), and easy to sharpen with a great pocket clip! Just gave one as a first knife gift to my sister.

Personally, as a nurse myself, I don't carry a knife while at the hospital, but instead trauma shears and maybe a pry bar like a Gerber Shard. I haven't run into a situation yet that the shears or the pry bar haven't able to do and it isn't as intimidating to patients or visitors.

However if you do need a small knife, just like everyone else suggests, the Dragonfly 2 is exceptional.

I have the ZDP-189 version of the Dragonfly and it is perfect for EDC.

If you looking for an even smaller folder check out the Manbug which also does come in a [ZDP-189 variant]
(http://www.amazon.com/Spyderco-British-Racing-ZDP-189-Plain/dp/B0089DFLSQ/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1420580166&sr=8-5&keywords=spyderco+zdp-189). Just be aware that these do not come with pocket clip (I think).

u/silverfirexz · 2 pointsr/knives

I would take a look at the Kershaw Crown or the Kershaw Crown II. I own the Crown and it is a classy, simple knife. It is also quite large and hefty, so the Crown II might be a good option. It is simple, elegant, inexpensive, and sturdy. They have micarta scales and just feel really good in my hand.

u/Country_Runner · 1 pointr/EDC

Kershaw Crown. It's a decent knife and dirt cheap like $11 It's made of 8CR13MoV which is a stainless steel it has a high hardness and takes a nice edge. It shouldn't rust but it could but at $11 who cares? Thing is it's a Chinese knife but you'll find pretty much just good reviews about the knife.

Knives, cleaning gear, and flashlights are never unwelcome gifts for gun/weapon nerds. I linked you a bunch of decent tools that would make great gift ideas. Some more affordable than others. Get him a couple really nice things for like 40-50 each or a bunch of little affordable things and toss them in a 20 dollar range bag.

940-1 in carbon fiber with super super steel s90v.

http://www.amazon.com/Benchmade-940-1-Osborne-Plain-Finish-CPM-S90V/dp/B00JEK7GYA

Shop around. I know it is more expensive than the standard 940... But the 940 IMO is one of the best EDC knives there is(even though I keep mine on display rather than use....) and you will not regret it!

u/niky45 · 1 pointr/knives

not exactly "gentleman's", but any spyderco with a stainless steel handle is quite classy. for camping, I would probably go with the delica or endura, but for EDC I would prefer the tiny size of the dragonfly (I like smaller knives, btw).

only downside is a steel handle is heavy... and the G10 or FRN ones look much more tacticool. (however, I really dig the FRN scales of my byrd robin - but I was never looking for an actually classy knife in the first place)

also, for a real gentleman's knife, take a look at buck. their classic folders (110 and the like) are like the definition of a gentleman's knife.

u/RationalArgumentMan · 4 pointsr/knives

Just curious, what is the advantage to having the blade angled like that? Comfort, or more than that?

Also, I just pulled the trigger and bought the Spyderco Sage Titanium and I'd like to know what /r/knives thinks of it. I've tried to do as much research as I could, and the Sage seems to be a good choice. Can't wait to get it next week!

u/tunabomber · 3 pointsr/EDC

What about cost? I love THIS knife. Its super cheap but honestly my favorite EDC blade ever all things considered. It's traditional looking I suppose.

u/pstanger · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

I've gone through quite a bit of pocket knives and am currently carrying this. It quickly became my favorite knife ever. Totally ergonomic in your hand with an excellent blade steel which surprisingly isn't that difficult to sharpen considering the hardness.

u/Tunnelmath · 1 pointr/gadgets

You may not consider it a "gadget", but let me say this:

To everyone out there. Buy this knife:
http://www.amazon.com/Benchmade-707-Sequel-McHenry-Williams/dp/B000BYLIFQ
It is the perfect size and of an excellent company where you can send it back for sharpening/tuning for $5.

i keep this knife on me daily and use it daily. It is my Every Day Carry (EDC).

u/nreyes238 · 2 pointsr/knifeclub

If I needed to use my knife all day everyday, I would go with a [Paramilitary 2 in S110V](SPYDERCO C81GPDBL2 Paramilitary 2 Dark Blue G10 Handle Clip Point Plain https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0144QJ8YO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_NhFSybQ1D6H5J).

Decently light weight, fantastic steel, great in hand.

u/rem87062597 · 2 pointsr/Hunting

Benchmade North Fork Folder ($140). Sharpest knife I've ever owned and it just feels quality. It's the perfect size for hunting, not too big and not too small. The action is impossibly smooth and it keeps its edge. It's the perfect knife in my opinion. The handle is stabilized wood so it's as durable as it is pretty.

And it's really fucking pretty.

u/TheStuffle · 1 pointr/knifeclub

FRN Spyderco Native is a back-lock but gets you S30V under $100.

Spyderco Dragonfly 2 in ZDP189 is also a back-lock but is legal pretty much anywhere and has a kickass steel for under $70.

Honestly though, as a Sage owner... just bite the bullet and get the Sage. Or maybe look at building your own S30V Mini Grip.

u/Silverlight42 · 1 pointr/knifeclub

Your CRKT is fine. If you want better steel and still a 4" folder, up your price and get something along the lines of

BM 940-1

It's got S90V steel, CF and it's a benchmade.
BM-710 is good too (it's what I use). D-2 steel but I think you can get it in a couple different steels.

Changing the steel isn't really going to help you cut those 2-3" branches much easier. You won't really notice.

If that's mostly what you want it for get some $15 pruning shears or something.

I know you said you didn't want a fixed blade but you should possibly reconsider if you only want to spend $100. You'd be able to get a kabar usmc or maybe a used ESEE-3.

u/Connguy · 6 pointsr/knifeclub

I don't know what you wanted to do with this blade, but I can almost guarantee you there are far superior pieces for less money (in the $25-30). Gerber doesn't even tell you what steel the blade uses, they call it "High Carbon Stainless". This means it's probably a very cheap Chinese steel. But in this price range you won't find much better, so that's not a huge issue. The big problem with this knife is handle. It's cheap plastic like is used in all mass-produced Chinese crap, with a cheap rubber coating intended for improved grip. If you put any sort of strain on this handle (like a survival knife is supposed to get), it's going to crap out on you. This guy on blade forums broke his in the initial round of testing.

Maybe you should consider an SOG blade or a Kershaw Funxion if you're looking for a partially serrated, more tool-like knife. On the other hand, if all you want is a folder knife, there are literally hundreds of better options all over this sub for less cost. I love my Kershaw Scrambler

u/maflickner · 1 pointr/EDC

Tons of good options in that price range. How big do you want to go? Some ones off the top of my head

From Kershaw:

Blur, Skyline, Leek, hell, the Cryo G10 is what, 25-30 bucks?

Spyderco:

Ton of good options in a variety of lengths and prices. I can't even begin to encompass their entire lineup. However, I'm going to recommend what's in my pocket right now, the Dragonfly 2. On amazon the Salt with H1 rustproof steel is 45 bucks right now. My friend goes scuba diving with his, the thing will not rust. The standard version in VG-10 steel is right at 50 bucks

u/RyanNichols121 · 1 pointr/EDC

RAT II or Delica4. I know that delica is slightly over the 4 inches you would like but I own both the delica and dragonfly and the difference in size and weight compared to usefulness of the blade definitely worth the little extra.

u/travatron81 · 2 pointsr/CampingandHiking

Like you, I don't like serrated blades.

For a folder, I love the Spyerdco Native. It's got great ergonomics, a very durable edge and is right or left handed, you can also flip it point up or point down. Just a bit over your $50, but it really will last you forever.

My favorite fixed blade daily use knives are made by Mora. Swedish company, and they make exceptional knives in your price range, they really should cost at least twice what they do. The Model 2010 is the most versatile, IMO.

u/Sk8Rat · 0 pointsr/knives

There is also a tanto style if you rather. I am not a big tanto fan, but for box cutting it works.

They are folding knives, with triad lock!, 2" blade, and 1.1oz. You will do good with those I think for just that purpose, maybe opening packages or something.

I'd try one. Fits in coin pocket of a pair of jeans, and stays sharp for a long time with only that role being used. Plus, its AUS 8a, which is easy to sharpen anyway.

u/scubaman94 · 3 pointsr/ProtectAndServe

I use this at work. It's cheap enough where I won't be too disappointed if I lose it but it's sturdy and has my favorite features. Here is the same version but a different blade coloring and treatment, it's a bit cheaper. I like the black bladed one personally.

u/xNS5 · 6 pointsr/knifeclub

Salutes General Knife.

But in all seriousness, I personally would get something with a wider blade. As cool as that is, I would recommend (seeing as you like vintage style knives) maybe a Schrade Old-timer, Buck Solo, Buck 112 Ranger.

Edit: Oh and this just occurred to me, maybe an Opinel

u/jd_edc · 1 pointr/EDC

Any decent knife these days is going to have a detent to keep the blade from deploying prematurely.

In addition to lock-backs (the best of which is the Native) there is Benchmades Axis lock. It doesn't use a detent, but uses spring pressure to jam the lock pin into a milled flat on the back of the blade. Something like a Mini-Grip carries very securely.

Well, can't go wrong with an upgraded version of the same knife!

http://www.amazon.com/Spyderco-Delica4-Lightweight-Ground-PlainEdge/dp/B0052HQPWS

The reason this one costs around 60 dollars is the difference in steel. The steel on the knife she has, aus-8, is a nice steel that comes in a lot of pocket knives. VG10, the steel in the knife above, tends to keep a sharp edge longer and is more rust resistant than aus-8.

u/cjcs · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

The 110 is a little chunky and heavy for everyday carry. A blade of that size isn't really necessary for utility use. I'd go for a 112 instead, same materials/construction/warranty, but with a smaller blade that weighs less and feels lighter in the pocket.

Also, be sure to check out the policies for your school (in addition to state/county/local laws) regarding knives. Regardless of legality, many universities have policies against carrying knives with blades above a certain length.

u/nickfusco89 · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

Spyderco UK Penknife is pretty much the closet to a modern-style folding knife that is UK legal for anyone to carry in public (sub-3 inch non-locking blade).

Word of warning: UK police have apparently confiscated these legal blades before because they thought that the Spyderco detent blade was a locking mechanism which it is not.

Since you're in New York, you need a non-locking, sub 3" blade. Also, because it's a knife-intolerant locale, you're going to want a non-threatening carry, preferably deep. $65: [Spyderco Delica] (https://www.amazon.com/Spyderco-Delica4-Lightweight-Ground-PlainEdge/dp/B0052HQPWS)

The knives I linked are all folding locking knives. The shuffle would be harder to sharpen because of the tanto style blade.

For sharpening, most people either get the [Spyderco Sharpmaker] (https://www.amazon.com/Spyderco-Tri-Angle-Sharpmaker/dp/B004HIZKHE) or the [Lansky Diamond Stone System] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000B8L6LS/ref=sxts2?ie=UTF8&qid=1483915806&sr=2&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65). If you get the Lansky system, get the pedestal to go with it else your hands will be cramping.

Honestly I suggest getting a knife under $100. Once you get over $100 you start getting into supersteels. Supersteels are hard to sharpen for beginners and if you don't know what you're doing, you're likely to ruin the edge.

You don't need a serrated edge. Most folks here would recommend against it even if you did want to cut rope.

For cleaning and caring, I just put a drop of gun oil on the blade and mechanism. You don't really need to do this though. Unless you see rust or your knife is having trouble opening, you could skip it.

They make the Izula in 440C stainless -- not sure about the Candiru.

If rust is a worry, I'm a big fan of Spyderco's H-1 steel. My dive knife (the Caspian2, sadly now discontinued) can take days in and out of the ocean without much care to rinsing and still show no signs of tarnish. I've also got an Atlantic Salt with a serrated edge that I bring climbing -- the serrations make it lame for general duty, but it makes short work of rope & nylon, which is first priority. They make a Dragonfly out of it, too.

...I admit it's possible that my occasional overspending on knives has nothing to do with ultralight or backpacking.

It has an upgraded blade steel (s30v), and is 3 inches. And no, that's not what she said

I got my ex a pink spyderco ladybug http://www.cutleryshoppe.com/spydercolpnp3ladybug-ffgvg-10blade-neonpinkhandle-sprintrun.aspx

and and purple delica http://www.amazon.com/Spyderco-Delica4-Lightweight-Ground-PlainEdge/dp/B0052HQPWS?th=1&psc=1

my current girlfriend just got a leatherman style cs http://www.cabelas.com/product/Leatherman-reg-Pink-Style-reg-CS-Multitool/1439349.uts

and a pink mini tuff lite http://www.amazon.com/Cold-Steel-20MTP-Mini-Knife/dp/B00F5EUNDU

My ex still carries one of those every day and brags about using them and my girlfriend uses the leatherman way more than the knife but she still carries it.
