🎓 Reddit experts on garlic tools
The comments and opinions expressed on this page are written exclusively by redditors. To provide you with the most relevant data, we sourced opinions from the most knowledgeable Reddit users based the total number of upvotes and downvotes received across comments on subreddits where garlic tools are discussed. For your reference and for the sake of transparency, here are the specialists whose opinions mattered the most in our ranking.
Okay so I know you said under $5 but this is just a few cents over. I hope this can count. It's a garlic masher. Who DOESN'T want one of those?! Keep all the stinky off your hands and get a perfect mince for cooking?! It's like, heaven. I hate chopping garlic.
Also, my father is a huge griller and he swears by perfection with a meat thermometer. Getting the perfect cook every time, keep your family and friends happy :) and only $3.60.
I have a silicone basting brush at home and I LOVE IT. And it's only $2.00.
Some people don't have one of these but I love having it in my sink because it keeps all the nasty food from clogging up my drains. Into the garbage where you belong!
I noticed you had a cocktail shaker on there. Great for people who want shaken, but how about stirred drinks? Do it with something fun!
Also, make the perfect drinks with perfect pours. Jiggers make it easy if you're not an experienced bartender.
I've found some cool things for myself as well! Everyone benefits :)
I'll throw my vote in for a sharpening stone. If he doesn't already have a nice sharpening set, maybe consider getting him something like a nice diamond sharpening stone; I've seen them for $50 or less.
Tools are always nice. Here are some suggestions to think about:
~ microplane grater
~ Japanese mandolines can be fun to have around.
~ Fish spatulas can be a handy tool.
~ Does he have a good quality peeler? Everyone has a "normal" peeler, but I like to have a good quality horizontal peeler, like one of these, to use sometimes.
~ Does he do a lot of baking? If so, maybe some silicone baking mats for his baking sheets, or maybe some parchment paper.
~ Does he like to use fresh citrus juice very much? Does he have a citrus reamer?
~ Does he like to use fresh garlic? Maybe a garlic press?
~ Silicone spatulas?
~ Does he have a pepper grinder for fresh ground pepper?
~ Does he have a set of mise en place bowls or something to use to keep his stuff organized when he's working?
~ Does he have a scale? You can find plenty of options for home-use digital scales that can weigh up to 11 or 12 pounds, and use either pounds, or grams (if he's doing anything metric.)
~ Something like a good quality cast iron pan can be a lifetime investment, because if they're well cared for, he'll be able to pass it on to his grandkids someday.
~ A dutch oven will always be useful to serious home cooks. The enameled cast iron type are very popular, but they come in many different sizes and shapes, so keep that in mind when picking one out.
~ Knives are always nice. Paring knife, utility knife, serrated slicer, etc.
Those are just a few suggestions that popped into mind. Good luck, I hope you find something nice for him.
thanks for the contest. YOU are AWESOME!!!
Kuhn Rikon.
I consider it one of the best purchases I've ever made for my kitchen (and it came recommended by America's Test Kitchen/Cook's Illustrated if I remember correctly!)
It's a little expensive, but damn, it works perfectly and is pretty easy to clean in my opinion. I cook with garlic MUCH more frequently after purchasing this. I like to be a purist and use a knife for things... but this was a game changer for me personally. I absolutely love it.
Edit: Here's the link:
https://www.amazon.com/Kuhn-Rikon-Epicurean-Garlic-Press/dp/B0000CD0HX
Your entire fridge will soon smell of garlic, and everything inside will have a slight garlic taste. No thanks.
Just invest in a really good garlic press, saves so much time, and the good ones are super easy to clean.
This oxo one is really good:
OXO Good Grips Soft-Handled Garlic Press https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00HEZ888K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_-zqDDbNWSZDCC
I don’t mean to rain on your parade, but they have garlic mincers lol https://www.amazon.com/OXO-Grips-Soft-Handled-Garlic-Press/dp/B00HEZ888K. Super innovative idea though :)
Edit: I have a garlic mincer and it’s not that hard to clean. You guys do what works for you
I bought it off Amazon for $22.99 about a year ago. In the review video, they said the price was $35.99. It looks like the price has been up since last August
Maybe Kuhn Rikon jacked up the price due to the good reviews, or perhaps there is just less discounting because it has become popular.
I totally agree that it is pricey, but I will say that it is really well built, and works great. I am glad I didn't pay $45 for it though.
Zyliss Garlic Presses are nice.
I got a Rosle as a gift from a friend and love it more than the Zyliss. Cleaning it is super easy!
I also peel all my garlic before pressing (as I scrape the remains into the pan most of the time) and I feel the "Self-peeling" ones (like my wife's Pampered Chief one) waste so much garlic.
I use to hate garlic presses until I bought a Zyliss. I've had it for years now and use it daily. First, it has a huge hopper, I can fit 2 large or sometimes 4 medium cloves in, unpeeled and press with ease. It comes with a tool to clean the holes, but I rarely need it. If you don't peel the cloves it's easy to dig the remains out with your knife.
I would suggest buying on of these before giving up, it certainly makes dealing with garlic a lot easier.

KaNikki got a job! Fuck yeah!
Congrats on getting a job! Lets see a customer experience.... I once had a customer who was a foster parent, and she came into the clothing store I was working at, and was the sweetest most awesome person ever, although it was clear that she really spent most of her money on taking care of the fosters, I was so happy to be able to get her into some clothes that fit and were not stained/torn!

I have tried a few of them. Agreed most suck. Depending on the recipe I often do just slice some quick like in spaghetti aglio e olio but if I want an easy and fine grate I found this [one] (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B007D3V00Q/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) won me over for not pushing out the sides. As well, you don't even need to peel it. Just break it off and press.
you need a new garlic press. LOL

this one looks good and it's good brand. also oxo is a good brand. I am sure there are others too.

Rosle is easy to use, amazingly sturdy and easy to clean:
http://www.amazon.com/Rosle-12782-R%C3%B6sle-Garlic-Press/dp/B000063Y8F
best I've ever seen anywhere
I use this one. It's super easy to clean so long as you clean it soon after use, otherwise you may need to soak it first.
> And those silicone rubber tubes for peeling garlic cloves.
! AND..., The unexpected joke of the day award goes to: /u/mobyhead1
Look at that. Who knew?

Garlic Peeler Silicone Tube Roller - Easy Roll Garlic Roller Tube -

respectfully disagree... garlic press saves A LOT of time.
old styles are chunky but the new slim ones like Joseph Joseph are great!
This Garlic Chopper would help me in making Paleo recipes easier. :)
A whole new you, and a whole new me if I make more Paleo recipes. :)
I know, right?
But no. It's unnecessary.
May I recommend the Rösle garlic press as it is the best and by far the easiest to clean!
This Garlic Peeler Tube and Garlic Twist Mincer are my two favorite things in my kitchen.
They are so simple to use and clean-up is super easy too
It's not in ingredients, it's the equipment. The french wardrobe of the kitchen is the battery de cuisine.
If you're clever this should all be able to nest and should fit in maybe two boxes. I used to move every few months and this was all I had and it's really all you need. Baking is different though. Baking is what leads to a kitchen full of gadgets.
Have you used this one before?
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000CDVD7?selectObb=new
I find that it’s super easy to clean. At least compared to every other garlic press I’ve used.
Do you have a garlic press? It's a game changer. I generally don't go for unitaskers in the kitchen, but I also hated mashing/cutting garlic. I have this oxo brand one and I use it allll the time. I don't even peel the cloves - just separate them and it's super easy to use and clean too. Worth the $15 investment, to me anyway!
Thanks, good addition. I have a mandolin and when I'm doing certain things (e.g. french onion soup) I'll get it out. I should use it more often.
I have the Kuhn Rikon Epicurean Garlic Press (I think from Cooks Illustrated's suggestion?) and it works for me. The press plane flips out and it's almost trivial to clean.
The zoom does nothing. I have something similar to this that I really like, or use my food processor if doing more than a few cloves.
I saw a great peeling technique on here the other day. Crush a head with your hand/knife then put inside an aluminum bowl with another bowl to seal it off and shake for 10+ seconds. The cloves come out mostly peeled. And it is kind of fun to do :)
I have this one for garlic:
ORBLUE Garlic Press, Stainless Steel Mincer and Crusher with Garlic Rocker and Peeler Set - Professional Grade, Dishwasher safe, Rust-proof https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HHLNRVE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_qL5IDbQZFKK5F which I bought in sept 2015
And a citrus juicer I suspect like this one (mine was a gift, obviously inexpensive from amazon)
Lemon Squeezer Stainless Steel, Manual Lime Citrus Press Squeezer, XMX Metal Hand Kitchen Juicer https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HBQVL5F/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_jQ5IDbWXPS85D
I have to listen to Pink Floyd. It's too quiet in here! [this] (http://www.amazon.com/Unknown-GIGP-93-Progressive-International-Garlic/dp/B0000DZ10V/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=S1GF0HLI3KZI&coliid=I2YCU31M3U531M) would make me happy. I love cooking and I don't own a garlic press yet.
I use this guy. It's folds over and the red plastic nubby things instantly clean it out. Sure, it's a unitasker. But it's a common task and it excels at it. Cleaning is a snap.
I use an Oxo Garlic Press and while I do find I get more yield from mincing it manually, as I still do on occasion, I can stick the whole clove in there, press it right into the pan, clean out the husk and rinse it off (although it is dishwasher safe). The press is nice too when you have multiple little cloves that are just too small sometimes to mince, I'll stick 3 of them in the press at a time.
Also, sometimes, when I get home from work and want to get dinner on the table sooner than later, it's tiny shortcuts that help. I am completely unwilling to buy pre-minced garlic in a jar.
I'm not OP, but is sounds like this. This is another similar product with good reviews and less moving pieces.
This press is my favourite because the press mechanism swivels out for easy cleaning.
https://www.amazon.com/Chefn-102-238-001-FreshForce-Garlic-Press/dp/B004HINI6O/ref=sr_1_4
Rockers are also easier to clean.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01ATV4O2O/ref=psdc_678518011_t3_B07Y6PGWJ8
http://www.amazon.com/Joseph-Rocker-Garlic-Crusher-Stainless/dp/B003Y3AZSM/ref=sr_1_5?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1367586108&sr=1-5&keywords=garlic+press
Easy to use. Easier to clean.
I love this question. My mom gave me a silicone garlic roller/peeler thing like this that I thought was pretty dumb (use the side of a knife, right?) but it's actually amazingly efficient at what it does.
I dont know but I had something interesting happen last November.
I had a toy sell 40+ in an afternoon, and when I raised my price to more than double the buy box, I kept selling. There were at least 10 other FBA sellers with prices less than half mine but I was getting all the sales.
My best guess is someone was drop shipping or linked directly to my listing and didnt notice until the next day.
***
As an example, I searched for "garlic press":
The listing you normally see: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HEZ888K/
You see AMZ has the buy box and there are 74 sellers.
But if someone sent you this link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HEZ888K?&m=A17CA6KX7WV36G
It's the same product page but it's only showing the listings for 1 seller! If you were a customer, you'd probably never notice and you'd pay $38 instead of the $13 it normally sells for.
Even when you click through to look at other offers, It still only shows the one merchant.
Garlic Zoom. Because it's super entertaining.
I don't know what kind of jar you've got, but since you didn't include a picture I just wanted to chime in that it's perfectly possible that you are correct and you have a storage jar and not a cooking jar. For example, this is the one I have: https://www.amazon.com/MSC-International-Terracotta-Garlic-Keeper/dp/B00380E6U4/
My dad gave me one of these a while back. I wouldn't have bought it for myself, but it does a great job.
A friend has that press, and honestly I didn't like it. I found it squeezed the garlic out of the top, not the holes, if you had a big clove.
I much prefer the OXO one (which is what I own)
Sure, why not? No doubt whatsoever that it would work:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2011/aug/24/nose-ears-lips-attack-liverpool
Then add one of these:
http://www.amazon.com/Smith-Wesson-SWBAT21H-Treated-Collapsible/dp/B003D7K06G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1314414955&sr=8-1
...and one of these:
http://www.amazon.com/Kuhn-Rikon-Epicurean-Garlic-Press/dp/B0000CD0HX/ref=sr_1_2?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1314415007&sr=1-2
...and you'd be good to go.
Good god! Those eggos won't last through the apocalypse!!!!!!!
This here would garlic up my fries too!
This Garlic press will fulfill your needs as you put in each one and press into them. The more you have in, the more you need to press against it. When finished be sure to get the output off of the tip, don't miss a drop ....
You are going to get a lot of mixed responses. By mincing by hand, you can ensure you get the desired size, but if you don't have a good enough knife or enough experience, it can take longer. Using the garlic press ensures the consistency as you said, but then you spend some time cleaning the thing and potentially wasting some.
There are good things to both methods. I use the press when I'm going quick because I don't mince garlic like a pro in the kitchen. I mince when I need a desired size, be it smaller or bigger than the press. You can use a press like this and minimize the waste because a reverse press will get the tidbits that remain.
Just do what you're comfortable with or what the recipe needs.
I put garlic in just about everything, but hatted having to dice it up so I used to buy the big jars (I'm talking the 32 ouncers) of pre-diced garlec. Well, a while back, I found this thing and a garlic peeler, and I'll never buy a pre-diced jar again. With these two items, I have fresh garlic in barley a few seconds more that it would take to get the jar out of the fridge and measure it out and put the jar back in the fridge. With how cheep a bulb of garlic is, it's almost costless to add a couple of cloves to anything.
tube! Happy cake day!!
I have one of these and I like it.
Chef'nGarlic Chopper. They make large and small ones.Tap it gently over your bowl/pan after rolling it over the counter...take it apart, then throw in the dishwasher. I also use a garlic press for smaller amounts of garlic.
As with so many things, KISS is the answer: a garlic press without all the rigmarole. It's fast, it's easy and clean-up is ridiculously simple.
Ditch the press. Get a garlic twist. Total game changer. Rinses clean in like 2 seconds. Also works on ginger.
I've never seen that style of garlic press before. I think I would actually love using that. It looks a lot more utilitarian than what I have (and I don't know why I still have it): http://www.amazon.com/OXO-Good-Grips-Garlic-Press/dp/B00HEZ888K/ref=sr_1_5?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1426894292&sr=1-5&keywords=garlic+press
Mine has little nubs on the outside that you can bend back and use to press the garlic out of the holes. Works great. I never use it, though.
Edit: As others have posted
I have an awesome garlic peeler. We use it practically every day. Here it is.
Garlic peeling tubes are also great, and incredibly cheap
Put it inside and roll it between your hands for a second or two. The friction of the rubber takes the skin off and leaves the clove
I have this garlic rocker. Not only does it do a great job mincing the garlic, it's made of stainless steel, so when you wash it after it also gets rid of the smell off your hands.
That's a name brand one. Amazon has a similar one for $5 and free shipping on orders over $35.
Happy Sales Silicone Garlic Peeler Peeling Press Tube Tool Random Color https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008FLEMCI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_4YlTAbYRSKHVY
Get this! I peel a bunch of cloves at one time just by rolling them around in this for a few seconds. Changed my life.
$1.95, $3.85, $6, $8
thanks for the contest, more math was involved than I did in high school
I'm with you on this one. While most people say a mince is fine I greatly prefer garlic presses. When you press garlic it just melts into the dish and you get that great garlic flavor without any garlic bits. No matter how tiny I mince I still find little bits which is annoying to me. Between my mother and I we have tried a lot of garlic presses and we have both found that this one is perfect. We had an oxo one recently that was nice but the garlic ran up the sides.
https://www.amazon.com/ZYLISS-Susi-Garlic-Press-Need/dp/B007D3V00Q
I always deplored the garlic press, until I was gifted this one. Its amazing.
I love eating garlic, I hate mincing it. This thing changed my life.
Also, you can peel and freeze the leftover cloves. Better yet, mince it all and freeze in 1 tsp. portions.
I've got this one and love it:
ZYLISS Susi 3 Garlic Press "No Need To Peel" - Built in Cleaner - Crusher, Mincer and Peeler, Cast Aluminum https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007D3V00Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_lzhezb6JMPD0K
Get a garlic press, they're fantastic.
Garlic press unless I need tiny little pieces. I've snapped a couple of presses and now I've got the Oxo brand which is fantastic. If you're going to buy a press, this is The One.

I have a silicone garlic tube. Stick garlic in, roll on counter, and the peel comes off and it’s really ready to pop in a garlic press. Changed my life
Edit: here’s an example of one on amazon

I've had this guy for several years now, still going strong
http://www.amazon.com/OXO-SteeL-Garlic-Press-Stainless/dp/B0000CDVD7/
Two items you need are a garlic press and garlic peeler. This is a fairly highly rated garlic press. And this absurd little thing does an astonishingly good job of peeling garlic.
I felt the same way, primarily due to how much trouble they are to clean. I had gotten rid of every press I'd ever tried until I found this one through an ATK equipment review. Its design is pretty ingenious and allows it to be cleaned in just a few seconds.
Several years back, my fie got me the Joseph Joseph Rocker Garlic Crusher Press Mincer (https://amzn.com/B003Y3AZSM). It made life so easy, we quickly got one for pretty much everyone we know.
Get one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Joseph-Rocker-Garlic-Crusher-Stainless/dp/B003Y3AZSM (sorry, on mobile) instead. So much better than a regular press.
I always found this rubber tube thing to work the best:

It's a bitch to clean though.
I really like my garlic wheel! http://www.amazon.com/Chefn-GZM-830AV-Garlic-Zoom-Avocado/dp/B00138N62W
Garlic rollers.... for peeling garlic. Satisfying and time saving.

You're welcome.
I have considered the brushy guys, that one looks like it has the resevoir for soap in it. My garlic press, though, came with a little plastic cleaner thing that stores in the handle, similar to this one
This one is good: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01ATV4O2O/ref=s9_acsd_hps_bw_c_x_15_w
The last press I had, I snapped in half....this one has less breakable parts.
Get a good garlic press. I recommend this one. Also scrape the cutting board with the back of the knife. I see way too many cooks dulling their knives that way.
I've always liked the Zyliss garlic presses
Sauce recipe was adapted from here.
Recipe:
Sauce:
Bring to a boil and cook for five minutes over a reduced heat.
Cook the sauce first. I used a ginger grater and a garlic press so if you do it differently, your mileage may vary.
Cook half the wings in a Fry Daddy or other vessel with 375F hot oil for 6 minutes. Remove to a wire rack. Wait 3 minutes for the oil to heat back up and cook the remaining half dozen. Repeat. Each batch of wings should have spent 12 minutes in hot oil. Once finished, toss with sauce.
Everything you need to know about prepping garlic
Garlic is pretty powerful. So once you prep it, you can rub it onto the chicken or just throw crushed garlic into the pan you're frying/baking the chicken in.
If you want to buy a kitchen gadget, they have garlic presses example but you don't really need one unless you plan to cook frequently with garlic.
You can also buy minced garlic and pre-peeled garlic at your local Asian grocery store.
I would like to change your life
I keep my garlic in a terracotta holder like this. I got mine at TJMaxx or Marshalls for just a couple of dollars. Terracotta keeps it dry and in a dark place which will keep it from sprouting for a longer period of time.
OXO garlic press. Heavy, sturdy, gets almost all the flesh through the holes, and takes less time to clean than to chop it with a knife in my incredibly tiny kitchen.
These silicone things work very well too. https://www.amazon.com/Zak-Designs-Z-Rol-Garlic-Peeler/dp/B00004RDDP
My mom has one of these. I thought they were a joke. I used one. It must be witchcraft.
I use this thing. Works great, only takes a few seconds, and no vigorous shaking required.
Also, how many people own two large metal bowls of equal size? Not me..
Try this out then.
I first saw it at my mothers house and I though for a second that she was starting to smoke weed.
But yeah, with that you can have garicly weed and weedy garlic.
I like this one... this is a good one!
My most recent:
I was making dinner and needed to mince some garlic so I get out my garlic press , plop the garlic in, and squeeze.... only to realize that it was indeed NOT a garlic press and in face a lemon juicer. So I mistook one of these for one of these. Yeah, I felt dumb.
I hated them too until I found http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0000CD0HX. It's amazing. Can press cloves with or without skin. Cleans easily. I use it every day and it's super low maintenance and just works.
OXO Steel Garlic Press worth the 20$.
One of our cookware experts recommends this Zyliss press, which she says has lasted her 8 years so far.

Another one of our kitchenware writers owns this Oxo press and can also attest to it being durable. https://www.amazon.com/OXO-SteeL-Garlic-Press-Stainless/dp/B0000CDVD7
With presses like these, you don't even have to peel the garlic. Just pop a clove off the head and press through. No excuses!
/r/cooking probably frowns on goofy ass tools like the one I'm about to suggest….but I've had this little zoomy-roller-garlic-cruncher thing for about 5 years, and it works. minces better then I could ever manage to …and its kind of fun to zoom on the counter.
this thing works. obviously its not dishwasher safe, but I've never had issues cleaning out the garlic.
Roll/smash in one of these. Rarely have a problem.
these work shockingly well. You can put up to 5 or 6 cloves in, roll it back and forth a few times on the counter and BAM, peeled.
edit: if you regularly use garlic then this is a must have item. been using items like this for at least 25 years. don't know why they are not more popular.

Oh man, got a Khun Rikon Epicurean this past Christmas. Going craaazy with the garlic :D
You need a garlic rocker .
ORBLUE Propresser Stainless Steel Kitchen Garlic Press https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HHLNRVE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_MG74yb0VEM10G
?
I have one of these.
And they rock.
It's a "Garlic Twist" - you peel and smoosh a garlic clove and put it in there to finely mince it up for cooking in a dish.
Amazon link
And as other commenters have mentioned, can be used for more recreational purposes

I have this.
Is it this? https://www.amazon.com/Happy-Sales-Silicone-Garlic-Peeling/dp/B008FLEMCI
Here's mine
Rubber garlic peeler roll.
Getting a garlic press was a total game changer for me. I kind of hate the idea of specialized kitchen gadgets, but it's just so much easier.
Plus, mine comes with a little brush thing that lets you scoop/push the extra garlic out of the press. Like this. Highly recommended.
Thanks, that is brilliant. I hate peeling garlic.
Coming from someone who has broken a few garlic presses, get a rocking garlic press, not a squeezing one. No matter how heavy duty of one I would get, the pressing part that goes inside the box would also bend. I've never had any issues with my rocking one. It is slightly less convenient, but it evens out because I'm not buying a new one once a year.
Maybe I use too much garlic...
Depends on the press. Mine crushes unpeeled cloves just fine.
No. Mine is this one .
I've got one of these. just press the garlic and take the skin off, put it in and roll it back and forth a few times. I mostly cut it by hand, but this is useful to avoid the smell.
Get a garlic press
Put the unpeeled clove in and just press. The pressure bursts the paper 'skin' and the garlic comes out crushed and ready to use. Takes seconds.
I have a little rubber tube thing that I put the cloves in, roll it around a couple times, then dump them out. Voila, peeled.
Here is a link to a similar one.
I’ve used the Oxo, which was very effective, but still kind of a pain to clean. This style was a big upgrade for me because it completely flips apart for cleaning, and it takes less force to use.
Just buy one of these on the cheap. Garlic troubles are over.
Kuhn Rikon Epicurean Garlic Press https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0000CD0HX/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_t2yoybMKMC3V1
I use it nearly daily and throw it in the dishwasher. It looks brand new after several years. Previously I had broken and carroded garlic presses.
If you don't have one of these you should consider check it out. NO peeling!
ZOMG We Need this!
I have this on my WL too! Because who can be bothered with chopping and then garlic fingers all night? Not us, that's why!
No way! Buy $5 silicon tube thing from Amazon and that skin flies off no problem!
Zak Designs E-Z-Rol Garlic Peeler (Blue) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00004RDDP/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_oDFAxbTQN2RQF
I saw one oxo posted already... but this is the one I have, it is also a little cheaper . I crushed ginger with it the other night and it had no issues.

Protip: Get a garlic press that doesn't suck. It's night and day compared to the shitty one you have lying around your kitchen. I use this one.
i have this one. never used the one linked above, but it looks like it could be a pain in the ass to clean, and easy to break. the one i have is dead simple - it's the only kitchen 'gadget' i own.
You can't beat cutting up your own garlic. That said, I'm a parent now so I generally reserve that kind of effort for a fancy dinner for the wife. Everyday use, I fall back on the bajoon (I claim rights to this word) of garlic.
Onions are fucking easy to cut up quick though. Peel it, cut it in half (top to bottom). Then take a half, and cut it along the lines (the ridges that go top to bottom on the onion. It's a built in "cut here" guide. That's how you julienne that shit. Then if you want small pieces, you just go one step further by turning the onion-half 90-degrees and cut perpendicular.
Final tip on garlic. Get a garlic smasher. It helps speed things up a little.
Just peel the garlic, stick the clove in there and SMASH. No cutting or mincing necessary. Also, look at shallots if you want to up your onion game. Less to cut up, big flavor.
Looks like it's this guy (as it's also available at the dreaded BB&B).
Not to criticize /u/OliverBabish (of whom I am a gigantic fan/evangelist) but don't get that garlic press. If you're gonna get a garlic masher, get one that is easier to clean than the "bucket masher" one he got--digging around in the holes to try to get all the garlic skin out is a stupid waste of time. The best that I've tried are the ones that have a pressing plate that lifts out and can be scraped on both sides (like this guy or it's fancier all-steel older brother).
I have (and love) the stupidly expensive 'older brother' press but it was even more expensive because of all the other shitty garlic presses I bought previously. Buy once, cry once, I always say.
The fuckwits railing against garlic presses are the same fuckwits that want us to separate eggs with our fingers. It's like if you don't make a mess out of your hands, you aren't a real chef.
The argument about "wasting garlic" also tickles me pink. A head of garlic costs what, 70 cents? And you use how many cloves a day? I cook a couple meals a day and I'm hard-pressed to use up a head of garlic before it gets too dry to work with.
I also love people who say "it takes up too much room" as if they're backpacking with the fucking things. Maybe you live in a dorm, maybe you live in a submarine, maybe you live in a Toyota Tercel. If you live anywhere else, your kitchen has at least two drawers and I'll bet your silverware fits in one of them. What fits in the other drawer? Fucking everything else. If you don't have room for a garlic press in your life, fucking move. You're a grownup, get a real kitchen.
Then there's the "it's messy to clean" argument. Grow the fuck up. You pop a clove in, squeeze the bejeesus out of it, pass a knife over it, turn on the water with one hand, rinse the knife, flip the press backwards, hook a finger into it under running water, and put it in the dish strainer. Know what else needs to be cleaned when you use it? A juicer. a can opener. A knife. A plate. It's been my experience that the people who bitch about cleaning garlic presses are the ones that pre-measure their spices into little glass dishes. Fuck off.
But really, you know what? Garlic presses are fun. The only thing that beats them are meat grinders (which also take up a lot of room and are also awesome you whiny little bitches ever made bacon sausages I rest my case bitchez). You get to use your manly gripping strength to reduce an intricate and pungent little gem of nature into mutherfucking paste. Again and again and again. It's like cracking walnuts only without the crack and with tasty tasty putanesca as the result. Yeah, I can be a bitch and get out my fiddly little knife and cut fiddly little slices of fiddly little garlic so I can toss them in fiddly little olive oil and fiddly little stir them so they don't burn, but that's what bitches do. Heat, squeeze, clean, done. Grunt grunt, oooh yeah. In the amount of time it took you to cut your garlic into slivers I've made the sauce, boiled the pasta, eaten dinner and fucked my wife. And now your fingers smell like garlic whereas mine don't 'cuz that press that's such a bitch to clean? I can do that under running water and get on with my life. You, on the other hand, are stuck with a 4" Henckels and a jeweler's loupe because you're taking cooking instructions from Goodfellas. Douche.
In their defense, most people who hate garlic presses hate them because they're used to prissy pieces of shit or semi-functional testaments to dollars over sense. A garlic press should be like a hammer - heavy, ugly and utilitarian. If you aren't comfortable driving a nail with it, don't let it near your food.
And that's about all I have to say about garlic presses.
