If you have a simple hairstyle and a bit of a knack for it, you can cut it yourself pretty easily. There are a few DIY devices and techniques that are popular, but check Google images and YouTube first to see the styles that result from each method.

The Flowbee and Robocut have pretty good Amazon reviews.

I've used the Creaclip and I love it. I get a professional cut about every 6 months and maintain it with the Creaclip so my bangs and ends always look perfect.

There are also some tutorials for using a simple ponytail holder. That method does work on long hair and is similar to using a Creaclip. With both, you get a completely different look depending on where you place it before cutting.

Zombie monkey. I was in beauty school about 20 years ago and did some horrible things to my hair lol I cut it really short and colored it eggplant. It was the nineties man!! Here's a cape that I use for cutting hair, is easy that's hair related.

A few weeks ago I did a crazy color on my daughter who's 22. I did the back of her hair half blue and pink, like blended starting blue and fading into pink. Then some blue and pink steaks in the front. It was pretty awesome

Ok, so I'm thinking:

Use the premium 1.5 wahl guard. It comes in a set with the .5 guard. They’re way better than the grey ones that come with the clippers. I’d definitely recommend getting the full 1/8 - 8 set as well though.

Wahl Balding. Great hair clipper and will work great for your beard. Get some clipper oil and some cutting guides and you're all set.

I've decided on getting one of these rather than going to have it done anymore. http://www.amazon.com/CreaClip-C-01/dp/B004NMR6TY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1407375932&sr=8-1&keywords=creaclip

I'm not one for smalltalk either. I just want it done then out. The only pleasant aspect would be when the hairdresser is gentle with the hair and it makes me sleepy.

u/tribbletime · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

You should definitely buy these. They are so pretty! I am such a sucker for lace. I would not be mad if this came my way. It would make cutting my son's hair so much easier, since it would be less of "THERE'S HAIR ON MY NECK, WAHHHHHH." =) Thanks for the contest!

u/samk19 · 1 pointr/Wishlist

I could really use some thinning shears!

Thanks for the contest! :)

u/NiceIceX · 4 pointsr/butchlesbians

Oh god, I get you on the haircuts. I spent 10 minutes trying to convince the barber to just shave my hair off, since I couldn't find a single place that would give me a fade. My dad would have never had this trouble, they just would have done it without question. I got a lot of "But it won't be pretty." And then she just shaved it off. Now I just maintain it at home with a Wahl clipper.

As for getting a haircut... Maybe an undercut? Most hairstylists will do this one. I actually know several femmes in my area who have gotten this haircut. You could have the hair stylist do the undercut initially and just maintain it at home with a clipper to buzz the sides, and a pair of hair scissors to trim the top.

u/Spongi · 1 pointr/TwoXChromosomes

This one.

It might be a little wide for your use, it's just a little too wide to do my moustache perfectly but it still works.

If you can afford it, the absolute best clippers are made for horses.

I used to work in a lab and they used a pair of those to shave mice and someone dropped a pair and broke one of the tines off so they just tossed it. I took it home and used it for about 8 years before I too dropped it and finished it off.

u/weavesunlight · 1 pointr/AsianBeauty

I've had my hair thinned before (it's not especially thick, but i just have a LOT of hair)

They used a scissor like this and did it when I had a shorter haircut to reduce some of the volume. My hair is straight though, so I don't know how it works on curls.

u/LanciaStratos93 · 1 pointr/italy

u/shiplesp · 2 pointsr/doggrooming

Maybe a human thinning shear with teeth on both sides? These are an inexpensive but nice pair.

u/Dani_Californication · 1 pointr/malehairadvice

/u/wienercat is right, but you can groom it to be this way and have it look good.

Example of 3mm (stock photo)

Example of 5mm (Andrew Garfield)

Just need to shave it to be about 3-5mm in length with a 3mm razor such as this and then use an eyebrow razor to create the thin separation between chin/mustache and the hair along the jawline and cheeks.

Buying a Haircut kit and ditching the barbers:

My barber cost $15+tip a month. On amazon you can buy a 4 star shaving Kit For $35.

Time to make money back: 2.33 months

Money saved per year afterwards: $180~

u/qqpugla · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

These!

Thanks for the contest!

u/captaincannibal · 1 pointr/malehairadvice

Looks good if you ask me. If you really want to thin it, you can just ask your stylist to do it or get some thinning shears and do it yourself.

u/pseudoscienceoflove · 3 pointsr/CutYourOwnHair

Thanks!

I started out with a 6, then worked my way down to a three. Then I used the slanted guards that are in this set that I bought. But for the most part I kinda just winged it.

u/Fett2 · 3 pointsr/wicked_edge

Something like this.

u/ghoghnoos · 1 pointr/AskReddit

Bic Shavers are bitches. Shaving with those are like shaving using a peace of can.

u/Informationator · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

I have been very happy with my Andis Trimmer Kit

I did a ton of research beforehand and settled on that. The trimmer alone has been worth it. I don't like being cleanshaven so I use that to keep everything close - never snags and doesn't take forever like the junky trimmers on electric shavers.

Just remember, always properly maintain your equipment - a little oil goes a long way. I've been using the trimmer for about 6 months now with no problems whatsoever (I do oil it as instructed - It's easy and the kit comes with trimmer oil).

u/JustARichard · 1 pointr/Justfuckmyshitup

When I was watching Shark Tank, there was an invention from a girl that uses a provided leveling system to cut your hair she even demonstrated it on the show. There's also a lot of tutorials for it too on YouTube.

Oh. Thats reasonable. Ask your stylist, he should do it for you. Or do it yourself with this http://www.amazon.com/Tweezerman-Stainless-2000-Thinning-Shears/dp/B000WHWIWO

I have no idea how well this works, but I saw it on shark tank:

I used to have the same problem cutting my hair with a cheap store-bought clipper. I needed to go over my head 3 or 4 times to get it presentable and then spot trim on top of that. I bought a new balding clipper a few months ago and cut my hair using the 1/8" comb. Haven't had any issue since. It cuts everything the same length on the first pass.

u/SaintFever · 2 pointsr/malehairadvice

Texturizing is really annoying to do by yourself, cause you might cut off too much and remove some length. You could purchase some $5-$10 dollar thinning shears (see: http://www.amazon.com/SE-73952-Hair-Thinning-Scissors/dp/B000V6WDUS) and just cut a little bit in different sections. How deep you go depends on how long your hair is; generally try not to go below an inch away from the scalp, or you risk making short hairs that stand straight up.

u/Equipoisonous · 0 pointsr/TheGirlSurvivalGuide

I've always really really hated everything about going to get my hair cut. I hate the forced small talk conversation, or lack there of. And it takes soooo long. And I never know the right thing to say about what I want with my hair and I feel like I sound like an idiot.

I recently tried this product for the first time and I don't think I'm ever going to get my hair cut at a salon ever again. You just bend over and cut your hair upside down and it gives you a nice layered haircut instantly. (If you have long hair). If you have shorter hair there are also ways to use it but they might be more difficult to learn. I think there's plenty of youtube tutorials though!
