Cost Analysis

Tent Setup

$70 2' x 4' x 5' Mylar tent

  • Holding up well, easy build. Is not 100% dark, light leaks outwards from spots along the zipper and pinholes but no light leak into the tent during dark. Perfect size for my light.

$325 Lights: Horticulture Lighting Group 260 QB LED Kit

  • I cannot say enough about these lights. I had to run them anywhere from 50-75% during veg to prevent light burn. Great coverage for a 2x4 tent. Nothing but praise 10/10 would buy again.

    Climate Control

    $100 ($90 + $10)4" Inline duct fan and Carbon Filter + Ducting/clamps from ACE

  • This puppy can SUCK, I have to keep it on the lowest setting to prevent the pressure inside the tent from dropping (need to work on my passive intake next grow). Carbon filter works great. Lowers humidity in a pinch. It keeps my humidity at or below 50%, which is what it maxes out at after a watering.

$21 Osculating Fan Purchased on a flash deal

  • I have it elevated about 3-4 inches on a box. Running and osculating 24/7. It pushes air, not a jet engine though.

    Already on hand: Box Fan

  • Had one from years ago. Sometimes I open the tent and blast this on high right on level with the buds just go shake out the leaves, gets a bit crowded in the scrog and I'd like to eliminate any humidity caught between leaves sticking together. Think you can scoop one from Walmart for like $15 bucks, $20 max. I also have room at the right edge of my tent where I normally keep the oscilating fan to drop this in and use it in a humidity pinch.

    $25 [Humidifier] (https://www.walmart.com/ip/Sunbeam-Warm-Mist-Humidifier-SWM6000-BWM/32664862)

  • This puppy does well. I use the first setting, usually can run 16+ hours on a full reservoir of H20. No filter which keeps cost down, just need to clean it one or twice a week with a brush for the hard water deposits. 5-10 minute process.

    $45 Dehumidifier

  • This was a bit of a mistake purchase. I wanted to test and see if a small model offered on amazon (this looked to be one of the best for sub $50, and has the biggest holding tank out of them all) could put in any kind of noticeable work in a tent. What I noticed is that it will be able to roughly maintain humidity at times, after I run the exhaust fan to lower the levels. When the lights are out and the temperature drops, this thing has no chance. Go with a full size dehumidifier or rely on the dry Colorado air + passive intake + duct fan. I was struggling with humidity issues during the cold of the winter, now that I can have my windows open my ambient room humidity is usually 40% or below.

$18 4" inline duct booster fan

  • Also a mistake purchase. Does not move a lot of air. Had plans to use this for an airflow/passive (not) intake system but it's not worth the electricity cost to run this thing. I'd stay away.

Meters (Ph, PPM, Soil, Temp and Humidity)

    $18 Hygrometer for Temp/Humidity

  • Worth it to get the wireless monitor so you're not opening the tent all the time)

    $13 Ph Meter

  • Great little Meter. Calibrated nicely and seems to be holding true. Details about storage below under the calibration Solution

    $12 TDS PPM meter

  • Quick measurements, came with a little leather storage pouch. Can't recommend against it.

$9 Soil Moisture, Light, Ph meter

  • Does it's job well, reads soil Ph and moisture well and pretty instantaneously. I wouldn't recommend it for getting detailed light readings but it responds correctly.

    Ph Control and Calibration

    $9 Ph Control Kit

    $14 Ph Calibration solution

  • For calibration/life of the tip:I store the tip in a bit of 7.0 solution that I pour into the cap. Good to have on hand for calibration.

    Plants / Growing Medium

$80 Clones - $20 from dispensary. here's a link to the strain page and the clone page. Don't believe seeds are available.

$8 for 6ct 5 gal Smart Pot knockoff

  • Do their job, hold up well. I cut the handles off to make watering under the scrog easier.

$40 - Soil: Two bags of Happy Frog purchased from the local grow store. Ocean forest was sitting around.

$7 for 30ct Starter grow bags

  • Do not recommend, breathe terribly, water stagnates even with modifications. Had to feed lightly and often, and really monitor dampness. Needed these for the outdoor garden anyways)

$14 - Scrog net: I believe it was a 25 or a 50ft roll of 1"x1" plastic garden fencing from Home Depot.

  • Unfortunately I can't find a link but it's pretty common. I cut out the middles to make them 2"x2" openings, 1x1 seems very difficult to work with and would block a lot of light.

    Nutrients

    $100: Cyco 1 Litre Bottles

  • I have a local grow shop that I purchased a lot of these from. The 1 litre Cyco nutrient bottles ranged from $10-$18 and I have 7 different nutrients, call it $100

  • Vegetative State: Grow A & B + Dr. Repair + Silica

  • Flowering State: Bloom A & B + Potash Plus (+ Dr Repair and Silica every other feeding)

$20: Key To Life - Uptake

  • Great for calcium uptake. Was told that this could basically replace calmag.

$45 Cyco Grow XL Super Phosphoric Acid

  • Definitely an 'extra', not cheap for 100ml but I think the potential yield improvement from this phosphorous bomb will cover that cost, especially over 3-4 grows which I expect to get out of the bottle. Also states it helps with Fe, N and K uptake.

    Miscelaneous Stuff:

$15 - random stuff from Walmart, etc.
  • Eyedroppers, duct tape, zip ties

    $6 Spray Bottles

  • Did not use these much, only very early during transplanting

So to total that all out we're looking just over $1000 that I spent.

  • Could have kept it under $950 if I had not purchased the small duct fan or dehumidifier.
  • Also: Soil and nutrients for $205. Could work that down to under $150 by dropping a couple unnecessary yet desirable nutrients.

u/Secret_Caterpillar · 2 pointsr/WVU

Hey, it's a bit pricey but this is the most amazing fan I have ever seen. It comes with a remote and the tower design will fit easy in a dorm. I actually replaced a huge, steel patio fan with this thing. If you tape some ice packs to the intake vents, it will blow cold like AC. Also, remember that you can return for free if you don't like it.

https://www.amazon.com/Lasko-4930-Control-Oscillating-Velocity/dp/B0034JXBSC

Be sure to get this exact model. I dont know how good the other tower fans are, but like I said, I have never seen one this good before.

> You can probably make a hot aisle with less than $50 in hardware....

Wow really? Could you give a brief run down on the hardware I'd need to look at for my use case? And thank you so much by the way for taking the time to help me with all of this, I feel like I have learned and progressing very quickly due to your guidance.

Okay so 10 inch inline fans it is:

I'm trying to decide which one to buy as most of my options I have chosen so far are quite expensive so I should choose wisely.

Here are my options for 10 inch inline fans so far:

Hyper Fan Digital Mixed Flow Fan - 10 Inch | 1065 CFM | Energy Efficient Technology, Quiet Operation - 1065 rated CFM @ 170 Watt - $204.51x2

Or

Hyper Fan Stealth 10 in 1065 CFM - 1065 rated CFM @ ??? Watt - $336.99x2 - Supposed to be much quieter?

Would you know of any other 10 inch fans I can hook up with ducting rated for high static pressure like these fans that have 170 watts or less with rated 1000+ CFM? Or are these two choices my best bet?

Also is the "Stealth version" of the 10 inch Hyper fan you think worth it? Will it blow just as much air as the non stealth version or do you think with that added stuff to enclosure of the fan it will produce less air flow?

u/emmygurl09 · 2 pointsr/pelotoncycle

My husband and I have our DIY setup in our garage and absolutely love it! I was hesitant to purchase a new Peloton since I had never been the workout-at-home type and was worried this expensive piece of workout equipment would become a dust collector in our garage. We decided to try the DIY workaround before investing a lot of money into the "real" thing.

We use a Sunny B1805 with the Wahoo Cadence sensor attached to the crank arm. I really wanted a magnetic belt drive and this one was probably the most affordable we found. I wish we had spent a little more and invested in a bike that comes with SPD pedals since I know we will be upgrading those in the near future. Other than that the bike is great and I highly recommend it!

We live in CA where the weather is mild pretty much all year so we decided to put the bike in our garage. We screen cast the classes to a TV we have hung up on the wall using an AppleTV and use our phones to view cadence in the Wahoo app. I also have a FitBit Versa that I use for HR purposes, though it does not sync with the Peloton app (huge bummer).

Other odds and ends we have in our setup: WiHoo Mini Handheld Portable Fan we attach to the tablet holder, floor fan, a set of Bowflex SelectTech 552 Adjustable Dumbells for strength classes (we don't do weights on the bike), and a basic Yoga mat.

It has surprised me just how happy I am with this setup! I thought I would feel like I was missing out by not having the leader board and not being able to track my stats. But I have yet to take a live class since the times don't work well for us west coasters with 9-5 jobs and commutes. And while I would like to be able to see output and resistance, I don't feel like my workout is suffering for not having them. I used to take spin classes regularly and most of those were about feel rather than exact numbers.

We've been using this setup since July and, honestly, I don't see myself buying a Peloton now. If anything I may upgrade to a better bike at some point. But for $20 a month I am getting an excellent workout that dips and sways with my schedule. I don't think I could justify being locked into $40 a month when I don't feel I am missing out much on the extras that come with the full price.

Here's a pic of our setup.

u/iNeedAValidUserName · 1 pointr/dogs

I assume this was targeted at me, just fyi since you didn't reply directly I didn't get alerted!

Things like a fan (~$60) dedicated to him in his room, and an elevated bed (~$21) to better facilitate keeping him cool that we managed to fit in his crate (orange may have pics?).

Some items to save US headaches include rug tape (~$15) to keep him and our stuff from getting slid around as he plays, a light-weight crate (~$86) for when we bring him with us to places and need a place for him to lay down and relax, mainly for when we are doing stuff with our other dog.

LOTS of clickers were purchased just so they are always handy. Some other oddities, like balance balls and stuff just to get him used to being on strange surfaces. This is mainly to set him up for future competition success, though.

Bitter Apple spray to make sure he doesn't chew things he shouldn't (rugs, shoes, couches, chairs, base board, electrical wires...basically anything that isn't his toy got sprayed daily for the first few weeks). Lots of Natures Miracle & paper towels to clean up any accidents.

Oh for sure, here's where I'm at (copy pasted from a comment I made a while back):

  • Hortilux 600 watt HPS
  • Galaxy Grow 400/600W Ballast, always on 600W, never turning on Turbo mode either
  • Vivosun 6" Reflector Hood (can't find a link anywhere)
  • 6" Can Fan Max-Fan
  • 3 x 3 x 4.5 Secret Jardin Tent, can't find an accurate link since my model is discontinued
  • Honeywell QuietSet Oscillating Fan HYF290B, for strengthening branches - running 24/7
  • I'm using my 4" fan/ducting as an intake fan, directly in front of my AC unit's cold air flow
  • Bluelab PENPH, I aim for 6.0 to 6.4, but I don't put too much effort into accuracy, sometimes not checking at all
  • Fox Farm Ocean Forest soil, no other additions to the soil
  • General Hydroponics nutrient line, along with Floralicious Plus in the mix
  • Eve Room 2, purchased because it's compatible with Homekit

I've had quite a few set ups in the past, and this one is my favorite by far. It's made in such a way, that I can close all the doors and it would be unnoticed. If it's dead silent you can hear the 6" fan running, but with the AC running you can't notice it at all. It's great!

So my set up, is also a closet, that is slightly bigger than my tent. So in order to manage heat better I may take my tent out and put mylar on the closet walls. I like having the tent so I can have clones/saplings in the closet with light, and have my flowering ones stay in complete darkness. I'll try to take a photo for you too!

I also, just ordered my 480W Quantum Board light, which arrives on May 29th! I know I could do more to better manage heat and not need a new light, but this seems like an opportunity to upgrade so I'll take it.
u/goofyskatelb · 1 pointr/microgrowery

Here is a small 8" one: https://smile.amazon.com/Holmes-Blizzard-8-Inch-Oscillating-Table/dp/B000J07RMU/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=small+oscillating+fan&qid=1555104639&s=gateway&sr=8-3

They work pretty well, I was using two for a good while. I recently upgraded to a tower fan https://smile.amazon.com/Honeywell-Quiet-Whole-Room-Tower/dp/B01N2P6V5P/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=tower+fan&qid=1555104710&s=gateway&sr=8-5

The tower fan is more powerful, quieter, and more efficient. It's worked super well for me! It takes up a good bit of space in my 2'x4'x6' tent, but I think it's worth it to have a fan, and it doesn't really take up much more floor space than the small 8" one (2x 8" fans take up more space than 1x tower fan). I hope this helps!

u/masamunecyrus · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

I have never had a Lasko or Vornado fail on me. And I'm not using 30 year old stainless steel Made in Chicago, or whatever Vornado, I'm talking about a 5-6 year old Chinese one. It gets fairly heavy use. Lasko fans are largely Assembled in USA of imported parts.

Regarding the tower fan--I own some Lasko box fans and some standard Vornado air circulators. Obviously tower fans are a different breed of fan, so your mileage by vary, but either of these two brands are fine by me.

EDIT: If I recall, Air King is the higher end and/or commercial line of Lasko, or something like that. Air King makes this tower fan which has good reviews. I would either get that or get a Vornado and hope for the best.

u/SineDave · 2 pointsr/carnivore

Alright, here in Metric format. You can convert pretty easily:

2.74 kg top sirloin steak (you want pieces about 2-3cm (1") thick.
Salt (coarse crystal sea salt) 45 ml
Coriander (mortar and pestle) 40 to 50 ml of ground coriander
Brown sugar 13 ml (optional)
Pepper 1.75 ml

Sprinkle on the meat and lightly sprinkle each layer with malt vinegar. Cover and refrigerate overnight for 10 hours.

Mix 1/2 cup malt vinegar in 2 litres boiling water. Pull the meat fairly rapidly one piece at a time through the water. Push string through one end with a skewer and tie to rod or string in drying box. Takes about 48-72 hours.

A note on the box, a simple cardboard box works. Cut holes in the sides near the top and create a grid of string to hang your meat on.

You'll need a standard incandescent light bulb in a work light enclosure. You'll also need a small fan like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Lasko-4000-Stik-Ultra-Slim-Oscillating/dp/B000MFAOPY

Put the light bulb and fan i the box, and let the fan circulate warm air on low. Seal the box on top, and let it run for 2-3 days.

u/Makeswaves · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

I have this fan: link

It's been through hell and back but it's far superior to any other floor fan I have owned. Probably put it through thousands of hours over the past few years in the summer. Works great and moves more air than any other floor fan I've used. Low profile as well.

u/quiaudetvincet · 0 pointsr/AskAnAmerican

I understand completely, still would be nice to have though.

Actually, honest question, are those smaller plug in fans like these common in UK/European households? I honestly don't remember seeing them when I was there. Probably the best compromise to get through hot summers a little more painlessly.

u/chalkiest_studebaker · 1 pointr/microgrowery

Those look like clip on fans.

1 Tape wrapped around one of the structure bars, fan clipped on. Tape makes it easier for the clip to 'grab' on to something on the bar.

2 String tied around fan clip, hanging from ceiling (super versatile)

3 Clip fan anywhere else it will stay

Alternative: Get a standing floor fan like this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000MFAOPY/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000RL1WNQ/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1372653906&sr=8-1&pi=SL75

$60. Free shiping (I'm pretty sure it said so), and most reviews are very well and say its reliable. So it won't die on you like your other one. Or you could get two of the smaller ones for double coverage of your apartment

u/DJHeroMasta · 3 pointsr/oculus

VR Covers are pretty much #1 rated in terms of thier effectiveness. Mines arriving in a few hours actually :D. Due to the amount you perspire, I suggest you coming a VR cover with a headband. Also, what games are you playing that cause you to sweat so much? Are you a larger individual playing intense games? Or are you like how I was and had the damn thing strapped to my face like it was an an oxygen mask lol? Also, consider getting an oscillating fan.

Cheaper fan. A more quality fan.

u/blooomseer · 2 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

i just got this fan and it’s awesome. powerful so the room stays cold and i’m cozy under a blanket, and has pretty good white noise.

Here is a slim one that looks like mine. They’re really cheap and easy to store since they’re so slim! Just put it in the room during the hot days and put it in the closet when you no longer need it.
This way you don’t ruin the aesthetic of your room and you chose when you have a fan out.

They work GREAT! Can point it at you, have it blast through the room, have it rotate 160 degrees. Some even come with a heating option for when you’re cold!

I have two of these and I really like them a lot. I think I bought them 3 years ago and they stay on almsot all day every day and run great. Definitely recommend them.

At 83 degrees, a small fan on low blowing directly at you should be enough to keep you cool. I bought the Vornado Duo Small Room Tower Air Circulator for my office and it works great. On the lowest setting, its fairly quiet and has a nice gentle breeze that keeps me cool.

I use this one, works great

My husband found this Honeywell Comfort Control Tower Fan at the Target by the South Bay Galleria.

I would never have even looked at it, but he bought it, brought it home and got it going. Best fan I've ever owned.

I think you're on the right track when it comes to using a timer. In fact, for your purposes, the old-fashioned REALLY simple mechanical timers will be your friends.

However, you're right, modern fans, especially tower fans, are a slave to fancy circuitry, and I honestly can't remember ever seeing one that doesn't have some kind of stupid electronic control rather than a simple on/off switch.

What you may need to do is void the heck out of your warranty, and just hard-wire the fan to stay on, bypassing all the controls.

Good luck!

EDIT: No sooner than I post this, than I go doing some looking, and find this, or even this somewhat nicer version, which might suit your purposes.

I dont remember where or who recommended it but I have had this fan on my amazon wish list for over a year.

u/ganjananda · 2 pointsr/microgrowery

Thanks, man. The fan is a Lasko 4000 Air-Stik Ultra-Slim Oscillating Fan. It's perfect for a micro grow.

My tent sits in near-outdoor conditions, so I have to keep temps up. The smaller device is a Lasko MyHeat Personal Ceramic Heater controlled by a Lux WIN100 Heating & Cooling Programmable Outlet Thermostat. It pushes enough heat to keep temps as high as ambient +30.

I have this fan for sale: Vornado 41" Tower Fan w/ remote

It's hardly been used. It was in a spare bedroom. Includes remote. I'll take $50 or best offer. I can send pictures of the exact fan upon request.

This is the one I have...it's pricey, but worth the money. I purchased for the noise feature more than anything, and have been very happy with it.

This tower fan has been excellent:

I discovered it from this article on The Sweethome:

Modern box fans kind of just mash the air around. Have you tried a more traditional table fan? How about a tower fan like these?

http://www.amazon.com/Lasko-4916-Desktop-Tower-Oscillating/dp/B0027G1FPY/

They should provide a fairly consistent stream of air.

u/_danny · 1 pointr/LifeProTips

Also, a fan like this is definitely the way to go because it doesn't oscillate, but rather blows a constant stream of air across something like 120 degrees in front of it.

I've fought PM a lot over the last year.

At first I tried cutting out the worst leaves & spraying with milk. It helped for a day or two but it gave my tent a sour milk smell and the PM was back in a couple days. I would not recommend it.

Then I bought a 70pt dehumidifier. It lowered my RH from about 55% to 35%. This helped the spread a little, but it was still pretty bad.

I then started spraying Nuke 'Em. It didn't completely eliminate it, but it became very controllable. It took ~2 weeks between sprays before I would start seeing it again.

Initially I had 3 small fans providing air circulation in the tent. It seemed like enough at the time, but after adding one of these for the canopy, and one of these for below I've been able to reduce my spray frequency to ~3 weeks and I could probably go even longer between.

I know it's a combination of all of the above, but Nuke 'Em and increased airflow seemed to have the most impact. If there aren't any leaves worse than what's shown in the first photo, and you get some Nuke Em on them in the next day or two, I think you can avoid cutting too many fan leaves. Also, if the fan in photo 4 is all you have going in there, I would add quite a bit more. Here is what my tent looks like currently.

I went with this upright bladeless oscillating fan:

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000BOB658?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

It has worked great in my 4x2.

u/MrsWhatsit-75 · 1 pointr/SeattleWA

Thats what my daughter does and she lives where it gets considerably hotter than it does here.
Get blinds and close them early in the day, and open them when the sun moves.
They have some nice fans now.
We sent her this one, it works really well.

u/thesilentguy101 · 1 pointr/PrintrBot

What is your fan setup for cooling the print as it is printing?

I found I had a lot of problems without having a fan blowing on the print as it's printing. I'm currently printing Hatchbox PLA and Makerbot PLA at 195-200c, 60c bed at 20-30mm/s and don't have any more curling issues since I put a full size blower fan in front of my printer. I also use painters tape and alcohol for bed adhesion.

This is the fan I have setup in front of my printer. I start it once I've got the first layer down.

u/AbsolutelyPink · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

Yes, though I didn't claim they were bladeless. Just quieter than most fans.

I know this has been listed as quiet too, but again, nothing will be like a ceiling fan. https://www.amazon.com/Honeywell-HYF290B-Quietset-Whole-Room-Oscillating/dp/B01N0LQJN6/ref=mp_s_a_1_5

I got the two Laskos through Amazon. I got the cheap desktop oscillating fans at Walmart and Home Depot.

u/maryemitch · 1 pointr/HomeKit

The fan I have is the Lasko Windcurve... though mine is all black with black buttons. I couldn't find a way to use zip ties (though I have a lot running around the house) because the power button is located at the top of the tower and also has a depression in the button that meant I needed something to fill the depression to push down the power button. The gorilla tape means black on black, so I can't see it from across the room. It's not a perfect solution, but will do until someone releases a <$100 homekit-enabled tower fan.

On a related note I lived near the freight lines near Humboldt Park a few years back and the whistle always seemed to be going when I was trying to sleep. It took a few weeks to stop noticing it.
As far as extraneous noises go (loud roommates, etc.) this fan has been a godsend:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N0LQJN6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_-SH4CbZ3QKXYS
I would consider trying it out. Just enough white noise to drown out most annoyances.

u/delbin · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

We've used this one for years. It's relatively quiet compared to a box fan, but you can only expect so much since moving air is noisy by nature. We have no trouble watching TV with it on, though.
