I think you're in a tough spot, OP. I have never served, but what I hear from friends, particularly if you are in Basic right now, fitting in is the most important thing.

That said, I have a few ideas of how to fix your problem. First is the BIC Metal. It's like an injector sort of. They're considered to be the best disposables on the market. Not saying they're great, but they're considered good from the disposable standpoint.

My other idea is the Feather MR3 Neo. It's a cartridge, but it's considered to be the best cartridge razor. Has extraordinary reviews, some people have given up DEs for them.

I don't have thick/coarse facial and body hair so experiences may vary, but after reading the NYT article on women shaving their faces, I got curious and tried it myself, and I love the results. Twice a month I use a BIC single blade and run it over my face and body wet with water (no soap, just water; I don't want a too close of a shave). Hair grows back thin and soft and I could probably get away with doing it once a month, but the exfoliation is amazing and it makes my skin look very good. Plus I enjoy the ritual, I put on 80s music and sing along in front of the mirror while I do my face, ha ha.

Little razors made specifically for facial shaving are available. Tinkle is a famous brand.

I'll add to this, especially for the Afro-Americans out there.

 

Shavers...

 

After all of the cordless electric shavers I've used over the years, my Remington F5-5800 Foil Shaver gives me the smoothness shave I've ever had without using an actual razor. I finish off by edging up and trimming with a [Philips Norelco G370] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000FED5DU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_F702AbWT46ATE) (it was <$100 and it's probably outdated by now) I've used it for ~4-7 years and dropped it a few times. It leaves the skin a bit rough, though, but I've rarely ever nicked myself with it (if at all).

 

Instructions & Maintenance...

 

Read the instructions and follow proper maintenance (brush, clean, oil, etc.). Always.
And for the record, both of my shavers are easy to clean. The Remington requires more effort, especially once a month, but the Phillips only requires a quick brushing (I add Andis Clippers Clipper Oil). The "hardest" part is letting the Remington dry for so long before putting the head back on. Don't brush the clippers while it's on, btw. Seriously, you'll ruin the brush and end up needing to replace it.

 

Battery Life...

 

If the instructions say to let the battery die before its first charge, I do so. If it says to fully charge it for X hours before its first use, I do so. Now, people of Reddit had a particular conversation about battery life once. I never looked into the matter myself, but I started practicing it with all of my chargeable devices. After the initial required drain (if instructed), I always charge it after it hits 30-50%. I do my best to never let it drain completely to 0%. The idea is that the battery will actually degrade much quicker if it drains to 0% and will need to be replaced sooner. Feel free to call me a fool on this one, but please explain your reasoning.

 

Razers & Magic Shave...

 

This one requires a story or warning.
I wet shaved with my brother's razor when I was in high school because my cordless one (probably a Phillips) wouldn't work properly when I put it back together after taking the top apart for a full-ish cleaning for the first and last time (the school started reinforcing its facial hair policy).

Though it was my first time, and I shaved against the grain, I didn't cut myself or apply anything to my skin before or after. My face was so smooth that I kept touching it. Three days later, I start noticing bumps. By the fifth day, I had full on razor bumps everywhere I originally shaved. Bump Stopper II took a month or so to really any progress and around three months to really make an impact, but it left my skin dry and very flaky. Eventually, I moved to Skin Tight Razor Bump Ointment Extra Strength. It burned like hell in the beginning, but showed better progress. That and washing my face daily with soap and a towel of course.

Since I still had to shave, I just went over the bumps with a shaver and routinely wiped the blood away. Due to a barber's suggestion, I started using Bump Fighter Razors. He warned me that they were going to miss some hairs, but it worked well enough.

At some point, I was recommended (powder blue) Magic Shave because it would "eat those bumps up" (oh, boy). This stuff stinks, flakes all over the place, and can tear up your skin if you aren't careful. I tore a descent sized section of my skin off when I dragged a wet towel down my chin at the wrong angle once. I could see the skin sitting intact in the towel with the inner-end of my hairs barely sticking out of it. Was a really weird moment. That section of my face was pink and hairless for awhile before it healed over. Looked funny on my lovely complexion. For the record, I only used it every three or four days. Three is the minimum, IIRC.

If you're going to use Magic Shave, use a wet towel to wipe it off (prepare to rinse repeatedly), designate a magic shave cup that is to be used for nothing else, consider only wearing boxers, bring a broom and dust pan, and stay in one room or outside. Hell, turn the vent on, you stinky mutt. Overall, I do not recommend Magic Shave's original formula (powder blue). I cannot speak for its powder gold fragrant or creme light fresh scent version, though.

Now for razers...
I started using the cheap pack of (dark blue) Gillette dual-blade razers from Walmart in high school. They worked very well. Here are my instructions: Shave with the grain, rinse the blades after every stroke, thoroughly rinse the blades after you're done, wipe them carefully with a toilet paper to get extra crud off, and let air dry somewhere. Hell, thanks to another Reddit conversation, I kept a short round plastic container of isopropyl alcohol around in college to "shake" the razer in as a finishing touch of cleanliness. Supposedly, the alcohol evaporates after awhile, so I just let it air dry after that (read the 4/24/18 edit at the bottom). The blades lasted a pretty long time doing all of this before I need to pull out a new razor. That combined with how cheap they were...

 

Razer Bumps / Ingrown Hairs...

 

I found that daily shaving, Skin Tight creme, and actually washing or just wiping my face with a clean damp paper towel kept the bumps from fully returning. A trick I discovered to get rid of the ones that lingered was to grow my facial hair out. It looked awful for a month since the bumps returned as the hair grew (they might have been curling into the skin), but there's a point where the bumps start to recede into the skin and all you have is a full beard (minus some areas of the lower neck). Now just maintain it or shave it off. What you'll find is a smooth face with practically no bumps. You must keep the hairs from growing back, though (and maybe wash your face?). Mess that up, and the lingering bumps will return.

Oh, to hell with Bump Stopper II and don't bother with Skin Tight. My physician recommended Tend Skin Solution after I graduated college, and, let me tell you, it works better than both. I hear the ingredients aren't that bad for your health either.

 

My Routine...

 

I wash my hair (including facial) with Bubble & Bee's hard water shampoo (the price is worth it, especially since it lasts for a surprisingly long time), pour on and rub in their vinegar rinse ratio (a fourth of the bottle tops; it's optional when you purchase the shampoo), wash that out, apply Nature's Way Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil to my facial and scalp hair while still damp/wet (I'm not 100% certain about using it on the scalp yet; used to use AVEDA Dry Remedy Daily Moisturizing Oil twice or thrice a week), brush my facial hair (soft bristles for the cheeks and neck; medium bristles for the beard and moustache) once in the morning, and apply Tend Skin Solution twice a day with cotton balls.

I should be using the foil shaver daily, but I don't always. Hence why I brush my cheeks and neck.

 

In closing...

 

If you're close to (or cool with) any Afro-American males, especially ones who've just started growing facial hair, consider having them read this so they can learn from my mistakes. Those razor bumps were rather unsightly.

 

tl;dr: Use Tend Skin Solution for razor bumps, wash your face, follow instructions, foil shavers leave smoother skin, read the section on battery life, don't shave against the grain with a razor, and don't use magic shave or bump stopper II.

About my shaving cleanup steps. I later realized that letting the isopropyl alcohol dry on the razer caused the blades to dull quicker, so I started rinsing them off and wiping them with toilet paper a second time as the final step.

Disposable DE razors do exist but I think you'd be better off with a brass or plastic DE and normal blades.

For sharing a bathroom - would you be able to grab a bowl of water and a mirror and shave elsewhere? For example, on a balcony to experience the neighbourhood or in your bedroom to stay out of the way. It would take a bit of planning to be hassle free, but might be an option.

You'll want to look into larger packs like this.

With shipping it'll run around $20 / 100 blades; 20 cents per blade vs. 60 cents that you are paying. I'm sure you can do better than this as well if you look harder.

I used to have exactly the same problem you have when I was in my teens. I was forced to grow a beard because shaving cut the pimples & gave me folliculitis/pseudo folliculitis. Switching to a DE solved that problem.

Multiblade razors can cause acne, especially for teenagers. Use a razor with a single blade.

Since you already have AOS soap & a brush, there is no sense in your picking up a full starter kit. Just switch to a single blade razor - preferably a DE or SE, but if you prefer you can use BiC sensitive or Metal single blade disposable razors, or Personna's Bump Fighter razor.

A Gillette Guard razor is one of the best cartridge razor choices for teenagers, & is available online.

Feather's Popular razor is a good starter DE razor & is available for about $12-18 on Amazon.

Alternatively, Maggards has a starter kit for $18.

Pick up some alum for the acne, and/or apply benzoyl peroxide gel after washing your face at bedtime. Your doctor may have already started you on creams/gels containing Benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, gycolic acid or something similar. Salicylic acid should not be used for teenagers.

I'm hardly a shaving expert, but I have been using these for the last 6 months or so and am very happy with them, comes out to less than a dollar per blade. Not as good as I safety razor(which I've never tried), but alot cheaper than anything from gilette.

check out the razor saver. It's basically just a mirror in a protective casing but it extends the life of a razor by at least 2x... Probably more if you make sure to soften the bristles with hot water before hand.

There’s loads of different blade handles and stuff, you can customise to suit you! The Bamboo one is just my favourite. I’ve had it about a year and no regrets. It’s slightly heavy in the hand at first but you’ll get used to it quickly and then shaving just becomes nice and effortless :)

I’ve tried this with no luck a few months back. Spent about $100 on a complete shaving system created by and for people with coarse/curly hair. Ended up with not so good results and pain.

Once upon a time I had a good run with these Bump Fighter Razors. I may end up trying them again pretty soon come to think of it.

This "study" (if you can even call it that) is deeply flawed, unless we see some sources on where this person got these prices. I mean, the prices aren't even averaged, they literally took a random product from each category, and sometimes the products aren't even comparable.

For example, with razors. Where did this person find a $8 men's razor? If you look at the Amazon best seller list, women's razors (a reusable with 5 refills) are about $14, so that figure is accurate. But if you look at the Amazon best seller list for men's razors, the cheapest comparable option (reusable razor with 4 instead of 5 refills) is about $17 which is MORE expensive than women's razors. If you want to compare disposable razors, you can find both men's and women's for about $5.

Same with the watches. You're not even comparing two equal products. One is an understated, all black watch. Other is a very flashy, gem-encrusted watch. And we're supposed to be suprised that the one with the shiny gems on it is more expensive? Color me shocked.

DE blades are a no-no for carry-on. I've inadvertently taken blades I've forgotten about through security, and they weren't noticed, but you really don't want to count on that. The DE razor itself almost always leads to extra attention. Especially if it's a one-piece that looks like a razor on the x-ray. Not that you're automatically going to get a cavity search, but it's reasonably likely they'll look at whether it has a blade.

So what are your alternatives? Disposables and cartridge razors sail through without a problem. Harry's does have impressive marketing, but their razors - maybe not so much. You're still talking about a 3-blade cartridge, and they're still $1.50 to $2 each. No harm in that if you're interested, but a closer analog to your DE would be the Bic Metal disposable, which has a single blade and costs $0.31 per in bulk. Or the Gillette Guard, a single-blade cartridge razor with refills that run about $0.50.

Another option, though, is to just send your blades ahead. For less than the cost of a cartridge, you can tape a blade to an index card, tuck it in an envelope, and mail it to the hotel where you'll be staying. Sure it's a bit of hassle, but hey ... if we were in this for the convenience we wouldn't be doing it in the first place.

As far as I can find, DSC makes this inconvenient. You would need to cancel your plan and start a new one again every other month, which is a hassle. Yes, you save money, but if you want to go for the cheapest route possible you should just order 2-blade Bic razors on amazon, which could be more than half a year of shaving for $11.37 for a less frequent shaver. The point of the exercise is to see which automated plans are better, not to find the cheapest possible shaving route.

An article on Sharpologist https://sharpologist.com/2016/04/traveling-de-carry-2.html suggests DE disposable medical prep razors, which you can get on Amazon, e.g. https://www.amazon.com/McKesson-Performance-Double-Razor-Disposable/dp/B002C68I6I/ . Since the blade is non-removable, they are ok in carry-on luggage, and I haven't had any problems. Note that you do have to buy these in quantity, sometimes 100 of them.

Another alternative that people have suggested before is disposable single blade razors, such as the Bic Sensitive, also available on Amazon, https://www.amazon.com/BIC-Sensitive-Single-Blade-Shaver/dp/B01AKGRDBW/?th=1 , and at many drugstores (at least where I am).

Of course, both of these are plastic, so it won't be like shaving with your slim adjustable (which is also my favorite razor). But I've found them ok for trips, and I don't like checking any bags. I can usually get three shaves from either of these (and that's typically what I get with razor blades too). The Bics are better than I expected.

Also, following up on what u/Matty_Joestar said, I do have two plastic Dorco PL602's. With the blade in, the Dorco looks very much like a disposable prep razor. So before I bought the prep razors, I would just put a blade in each of the Dorcos and put them in my shaving kit. I never had any problems with TSA, but this is technically not ok according to their blog, https://www.tsa.gov/blog/2010/08/17/safety-razors-and-disposable-razors .

Honestly, just find something soothing to them, and soothing to you. Personally, I'd go with Mr. Rogers.

I can't use the Bic Sensitives either. They're supposed to mimic a Schick Injector, but they don't.

The only disposable I've had success with is the Bic Twin Select. That said, I've heard so much about the Gilllete Guard that I ordered some from Italian Barber - I haven't gotten around to trying one yet.

Just checked, its been quite a while since I got this particular order. It was a 100 pack of Personna 2 blade razers. They fit the Gillette head. Price went up 10 bucks since I ordered last or maybe I had a sale.

I'm assuming you wanted me to check out the Bic Comfort 3 Advance Disposable Razor for Men, 4-Count? That berry scented disposable womens razor isn't "equal product lines". Here is the same product line marketed to women, priced at a whopping 11 cents.

Yes I did post a generic search, but you know what I got back? Two razors from the same company, each with the same advertised functionality. Gillette Venus Embrace Women's Razor 1 Razor 2 Refill Cartridges and 1 Showerpod and the Gillette Fusion Proglide Manual Men's Razor With Flexball Handle Technology With 2 Razor Blade Refills. Guess which one costs more?

I used to have to buy these fairly expensive disposible razors a few times a year, it would last me ~4 months of shaving every day with them. I have since switched to a double-edge safety razor, and I spent about $20 on the razor and $2.5 for the blades that have lasted me about 8 months for a pack of 10. Such a better deal in the long run because it's nearly impossible to make that hunk of metal break.

How key is shaving in a skin care routine? Do I really need to dive into the world of shaving (and buy new materials) or is my current routine okay?

Right now I use a Bic Flex 3 Disposable Razor with Edge Shave Gel once a week for every week/week-and-a-half.

My wife and I both use them and you don't get a better shave. Also, don't use shaving cream/lotion/body wash. A standard bar of soap works best. (Do not use lava soap, you'll get one use out of the razor.)

Most "manly" men are not going to want to spend money on a tool as simple as a razor. Heck i would use I knife if I had to. Gillete needs new costumers, and they are targeting very feminine men, aka BluePillers. They are the only ones who think buying an expensive little piece of metal will make them attractive. They are wrong.

I don't know of any DE with permanent blades.

I've used a single blade disposable razor when traveling carry on. The Bic Metal is nice. Using a brush and soap with the disposable is about 90% of the experience of DE.

You can bring your DE without a blade then find blades at your destination. I don't find it worth the time and effort, though. I don't want to spend my vacation time going to multiple drugstores searching for way overpriced blades.

Bic Metal razors are single blade disposable razors that seem to get a lot of love around here. Most people agree they aren't as good as a nice double edge razor, but that they deliver a really decent shave. Plus since they are disposable you aren't risking much if they get lost or damaged.

You can pass a military face inspection (at least USAF), but it doesn’t cut the hairs deep enough to cause them to get irritated or ingrown. This is usually the first thing recommended for black/white/brown/calico Airmen before applying to get a beard waiver. There are a few different brands to check out. Ghost skin here and these have helped my neck drastically.
