I enjoy it a lot if I'm being completely subjective, but here's my breakdown based on ~4 months of daily usage:

  • Sound: "Good" - I don't notice a huge difference here personally, but I also can't tell a real difference between FLAC and mp3. (I'm coming from a Cowon so I was already used to a decent-enough quality DAP.)

  • Battery: Awesome - I charge mine maybe around once a week. The 30-some hour playback estimate is accurate in my experience. I also have the "battery saver" feature on (which stops charging at 90% to extend longevity) and I still never find myself even close to being inconvenienced by the battery life. With my listening habits I can honestly look at it on a Wednesday and think to myself "Hmm... the battery's at the half way point..... I think I'll charge it Friday." I also exclusively used the balanced out which draws a bit more power than the 3.5mm and still have no issues.

  • Power: Plenty - To be fair I don't have any headphones that are really too difficult to drive. The highest impedance ones being 70Ω & 102 dB/mW, but this still powers them without issue in low-gain. The 0-120 volume scale is nice too. I do miss the 0-140 range on my D2, but anything's better than 0-100 when you're trying to pinpoint that perfect level imo.

  • Storage: Great - more than I need and then some (but again I'm primarily using mp3's).

  • Software: Good - So I know a lot of folks hate Sony's blandly-named "Music Center for PC" software... but honestly it works fine for my needs (I'm using Windows 10 if that's relevant). I had such an issue with my old Cowon trying to get a simple playlist to work even in Music Bee, which is one of the main reasons I started looking elsewhere. Music Center works great for me at the moment, easy to sync, make playlists, etc, etc... And to the best of my knowledge most Sony walkmans should be easily compatible with things like Music Bee, etc.

  • Build/design: Shazam! This is where this DAP really, really, really shines in my opinion, but for reasons that are probably not for everyone. I wanted something larger and more substantial than my old DAPS. The WM1A is like an old school mp3-player from the early 2000's (it reminds me of my old Creative Zen Touch) back before everything kept getting smaller and smaller. The screen is gorgeous, and the touchscreen works flawlessly. It is extremely comfortable in the hand, and the physical buttons are fairly intuitive once you get used to them, and it's easy to control even through a pocket. I highly recommend the transparent case for it (can be found on Amazon for way-too-much-money or on eBay for less, look for "Benks" as a brand name I think?) It adds virtually zero weight/bulk, protects it from basic scuffs 'n scraps, and (most importantly) it has little strategically placed ridges that distinguish volume-up and play/pause. This allows you to basically figure out what every control is by touch (volume-down is beneath volume-up, track-forward and track-back are on either side of play/pause, etc...) So it really helps with being able to effortlessly navigate it. (I also use the little dust covers because I plan on keeping/using this as long as I can and they fit fine too.)

  • Conclusion: It sounds just as good as any other high-end DAP, but it's not going to magically make any music sound better than its original recording. Has enough battery life, storage, and power to meet just about anyone's needs. Where it really shines is in its day-to-day usage, the design is fantastic and it is honestly a joy to interact with compared to other players.

I've used both waterproof (IPX7) Dacom bluetooth earbuds and waterproof (IPX8) Tayogo mp3 player.

Bluetooth:

I've streamed podcasts, radio and music from my (poolside) mobile phone.
It works really well, until the antenna portion of the earbud is immersed in water, at which point the audio cuts out until that earbud rises back out of the water.

The earbud fit in my ear wasn't too bad, once I fitted the correct size rubber bud adapter, but would come out if I was going really really fast.

Additionally, the poolside bag containing my mobile device had to be in the middle of the length of the pool, to have sufficient range, but audio would start crapping-out at each end of the pool.

Given that the DACOM bluetooth earbuds have a black cable linking the two earbuds together, around the back of the head/neck - incorporating the antenna into this cable might have provided better reception "in-water".
But my tests showed that there was a single antenna in one bud only, so once that ear was underwater - the audio cut-out.

The DACOM eventually stopped powering-on after only 4-5 months of use, and I received no response from the online retailer requesting replacement - so I gave up as my time wasn't worth it.

Mp3 player:

This is a nice unit, in the shape of a headband that goes around the back of your head. The player "pops out" of the head band, and has it's own usb connector that goes straight into a USB port on your computer.
The player works fairly well, but the earbuds just fall out as soon as I start swimming, regardless of which rubber earbud adapter I use.

If swimming gently, the best audio quality seemed to occur once some water had found it's way into my ears, providing a warmer, fuller sound, obviously due to the water helping to conduct the sound waves to my ear drum. Out of the water, the sound was thinner/tinnier.

But the battery life is reasonable, and being 8GB, I can stash so many tunes and podcasts on there, that having a "live connection" isn't much of a problem for me.

If only the earbud fit were tighter for in-water use.

I have a Sony Walkman 16 GB and I fucking love it. It not only has a long ass battery life (I only have to charge it once a week and I listen to it for several hours every day) but it reproduces awesome sound. I'm a DJ and a basshead and they sound awesome with a pair of good headphones. It doesn't have expandable memory but it has a speaker setting that gets pretty loud so you can play music for other people and whatnot. Plus it's pretty damn cheap for a 16 gig player.

u/netscooby · 2 pointsr/cordcutters

Just an fyi, you are in violation of the law if you are playing copyrighted material (music) over your "on hold" without paying royalties.

That said, this probably isn't the best sub group for this question.

This looks like an option that has royalty free music already included and you can customer your message, only it doesn't appear to be networked: http://www.amazon.com/Grace-Digital-Message-Player-GDI-USBM10/dp/B005VDUBS2

Maybe something like this, uses a service called cloudstream, not sure what the fees are: http://www.onholdplus.com/dual-zone-streaming-music-player/

Depending on your creativity and tech skills, you could probably build something on a Raspberry Pi and then duplicate it for each location. You can remote connect and change whatever files you need. It could be a simple and cheap, but elegant solution. Maybe a good learning opportunity too.

Hope that helps

I've noticed many people asking about where to get podcasts and audiobooks, etc..

Make your own podcasts by extracting the audio tracks from youtube and other videos!

  1. Get Video DownloadHelper. There are many other such extensions, but I've found this one to be generally quite good for most Flash video-based sites.

  2. Check out sites like OpenCulture's Smart YouTube page, with dozens of links to different educational topics on just about any topic

  3. Get the free app FLV Extract to extract the audio tracks. Many tracks embed .mp3 audio, but sometimes the audio is in a different format, such as .aac.

  4. If your audio player can't play the audio track, you can convert it using fre:ac.

  5. Finally, if you are a swimmer, get an underwater mp3 player (like this one or this one). Swimming to audiobooks and lectures is an amazing way to make the time go by quickly, and it's actually quite easy to pay attention to the audio AND the water once you get some practice.

TL;DR: make your own podcasts by extracting the audio from flash videos, such as lectures.

I'm quite happy with my Cowon Plenue D - $180, great battery life, compact, nice display, 32 GB internal/takes external SD cards up to 128 GB.

I also had the IQQ C18 which is supposed to be a budget knockoff of the FiiOs. Good enough for the $70 price I suppose, but there were a bunch of little things that infuriated me. The way it ordered the folders by date rather than alphabetical order, how it wouldn't resume the previous song when you turned it back on, and how it always faded the songs in. But good battery life. NiNTAUS and xDuoo are often mentioned in the same conversations.

Ruizu, Benjie, and AGPTek are brands in the $20-$50 range. Small players that fit in your pocket, good battery life, but fewer features than the more expensive players. Probably a few software bugs like the aforementioned IQQ, but my memory is a little shoddy.

No clue on how it would perform when connected to a sound system, but SanDisk is highly praised.

u/kinganthony3 · 2 pointsr/Fitness

Sandisk Clip Sport. It's around 30 bucks for the 4GB edition and has microSD expansion. And if you break it, who cares it was only 30 dollars.

It has FM radio, stopwatch, supports pretty much all music formats (mp3, aac, flac, and some others). It's very small and portable, just clip it to your shirt. Very good battery life too.

I've been very happy with mine :)

u/Qu1nlan · 0 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

WOW, what an amazing and generous contest. Well, if I win... I'd love an older iPod You can get a used one as low as 60 bucks, leaving more left over for giftings if you like :3. Girlsplaywow is a jerk, not really though!

u/Grummond · 11 pointsr/gadgets

"resulting in a dramatically higher quality sound than a traditional MP3 player"

BS.

Most people will have a very hard time distinguishing this from a 320kbps mp3 file played on something like the Sansa Clip. Stop trying to make your article more interesting and relevant by wildly exaggerating/lying about the facts.
The sound quality IS probably higher, but not dramatically so. Not even close.

The reason this will fail is not because there isn't a market for it, but because that market is already filled by something else. A player that plays FLAC, has a high quality DAC and amp, can be upgraded to 136Gb, and it costs $30.

Use the money you save by not buying the Pono on better headphones and you're much better off.

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/AskReddit

I rather like the look of the Sony players. Feedback looks pretty positive too.

I've always liked the rather utilitarian look of Sony gear. Their mp3 players look like Sony players, though they are rather slight. Still, fairly rugged looking.

I have a Samsung Q2 and I do not recommend it. The touch control is too sensitive. I don't know how many times I've just switched its position in my hand a little and it goes to the next track. Pisses me off.

u/Byzie08 · 2 pointsr/gadgets

You're probably going to have to look for something from either Cowon or Sony these days. Personally I grabbed a Zune HD 64gb before they were discontinued and its still going strong 5 years later, incredibly well built and the music software still works great in Windows 10. I'm not sure what desktop software these two choices I linked used though so a little more research might be necessary. Good Luck!

u/bsod666rrod · 2 pointsr/audiophile

From my experience, I love the Sansa's. Such as the Clip+, the Fuze and the one I have bought several times (Because I keep putting it through the washer somehow) the Fuze+.

The Pros:

  • Does not require iTunes/Sync software (Can just transfer the files over like a standard storage medium)

  • Plays pretty much every format of music

  • Expandable storage via MicroSD

  • I believe most are compatible with Rockbox

    The Cons:

  • Feels cheap, really light (Plastics)

  • The Fuze+ has (from my experience anyway) a really frustrating touchpad.

Just for the record, I can't say much about the Clip+ or the Fuze being that I haven't used them, I have just heard really nice things about them.

    I hope that this helps!

Miko runs up to Madison and throws a punch straight for her chest, but Madison grabs her wrist before her fist could make impact, they stare at each other for a bit as they both struggle to maintain control, when Miko suddenly pulls her arm away, throwing Madison on the ground. Out of Madison, a small device drops to the side. Miko instantly grabbing it and jumps back. Madison looks up and sees Miko with her device and she screams.

Madison: Give that back! I order you!

Miko starts running as she begins to swipe through the playlists that have been set up by Madison. She is looking towards the songs and she sees one.

Miko: I wonder what this one will do...

Miko turns around and when she hits the play button, Madison stops. She turns and looks towards Miko as the song starts and when the chugs begin, she throws her into a mosh like dancing towards Miko. Her eyes widen as she begins to run away, looking at the music device again.,

Miko: There's gotta be something that I can use to help me... Ummm... This looks good!

Miko presses the play button and Madison stops for a moment, waving her arms a bit, and then an all too familiar tune begins to play. Madison begins to throw energy balls at Miko and again, Miko finds herself running away.

Miko: What is this shenanigans?! This chick is crazy! How is she connected to this device like that to be able to utilize so many different magics depending on the song... If only there was a way to turn this thing down or something?

Just as Miko screams that last part, she looks down, and she sees a title of a song that seems to speak to her, you know, when you're in a bind and it's the right thing at the right time sort of deal? She looks back, and takes a deep breath, praying this was it.

Miko: Here goes!

Miko presses the button and Madison stops again, and then the song starts....

Madison: NO! NOT THIS SONG?! WHY?????????

Should be coming in the mail on wednesday! A friend of mine really likes it though, says it's cheap and not having to deal with itunes is great. But I'll let you know if it's a safe bet when I receive and test it out.

Amazon reviews may speak for themselves though:)

I have a finis neptune mp3 player for swimming. It doesn't use earbuds but rather pads that sit on the bones in front of your ears and are held by your goggle straps. The sound is interesting, it loses some frequencies and others are clear, either way much easier than buds in the water. It made distance swimming far more enjoyable for me

However it is only depth rated for 15ish ft. I don't see a reason why they couldn't design it for higher pressure, I think it's just a niche enough product already and the cost increase would make it not worth it.

This is the current version

I like the Sanza Clip devices for simply playing MP3's. I also have a Creative Zen Vision:M which is awesome and plays xvid. I think a key feature in a player is the ability to delete files directly from the device.

But I just use my Droid Incredible phone now- I can load it with some favorites for when I'm offline, but when I'm online, I can use Google, Amazon, Youtube, or my favorite, Subsonic.

u/QuipA · 1 pointr/headphones

There are plenty from companies like FiiO, Astell&Kern, Onkyo and Sony. The price for a decent DAP ranges from $100 to $400, the crazy ones go far beyond that.

u/effin_dead_again · 3 pointsr/VOIP

I use this for my call center switch

It includes a bunch of royalty free tracks and hold voices, and a simple software to string them together.

EDIT: if you want streaming you have to be crazy careful not to run afoul of copyright restrictions. It's best to use something off the shelf like the linked box.

I absolutely love my Motorola M25. Apparently, they're hard to find nowadays...but it still works great after all these years.

u/doniem · 1 pointr/audible

I use the Sansa clip sport. It's the only MP3 player I'm aware of that has an audiobooks feature for keeping your place in a chapter. It works great for regular audiobooks. I'm not sure about audible but I'd be surprised if it works with it.

SanDisk Clip Sport 4 GB MP3 Player - Black https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00HCMZ0OK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_YDRizbZ7A8MJK

There's also a slot for an SD card and there is an armband available for carrying it but to be honest it's so small you can just clip it to your t-shirt and you would never know it's there.

u/OhTheHueManatee · 1 pointr/Showerthoughts

This does sound like the most aquatic experience but I'd throw these in as the "ultimate aquatic experience". It's an underwater Mp3 player. Listening to music while swimming is like dancing through zero gravity and floating still while getting lost in a song is like being hugged by the music.

u/UrAContra · 2 pointsr/audiophile

Depending on her preferences of form factor I'd recommend the Fiio X1, Fiio X3 iBasso dx50, and Sony Walkman High-Res.

They are all comparable in audio quality and it all comes down to form factor and buttons really. The Fiio X3 can work as a standalone DAC for your PC as well. The iBasso dx50 has a touchscreen, and replaceable Galaxy S3 battery while the others all just use buttons. The battery life of the iBasso and Fiio are all around 10-15 hours while the Sony claims 30-50 hours depending on Hi-Res audio or MP3s. The Sony comes with 64GB of built in storage while the X3 has 8GB and the X1 and DX50 have no built in memory but all have micro SD slots you could expand storage easily using these. Also the Sony has Bluetooth for connecting to speakers if your sister needs that.

The UIs:

Fiio X1, Fiio X3, and upgraded ui, iBasso DX50, Sony.

I use a 30GB Creative Zen Vision:M that I bought new. At that time, it was comparable to the iPod Shuffle. My first one was a brick out of the box but my second one has kept going all these however many years.

Edit: I wanted to add that I'm using it with my MacBook. It's not officially supported, but one can make it work pretty well with XNJB.

u/sandrakarr · 1 pointr/AskReddit

Up until the day I got my iPod touch, I was extremely anti ipod (NOT Anti Mac!! Just the ipod.). I will admit that iPod being so mainstream was a very small part of it. Primarily though my reasons for the anti ipod were:
Battery- About six months after the release of the first gen, I came across an article about ipods dying batteries. They werent recharging. Apple said tough luck: Buy a new ipod. No way to replace/exchange batteries. Sure, this is bound to happen at some point, but after only six months? Come on!
Initially Mac only- kinda self explanatory.
Music Format- at the time, a good bit of my music was in .wma. I hadnt been paying attention when I went on a CD ripping spree and forgot to switch it to .mp3. I didnt have the time or the hard drive space to convert.
I found a suitable alternative with the Creative Touch that lasted me for a few years til I broke it, then the Creative Zen Vision. Ive had it for about five or six years, it still works, but I wanted a new player.
edit: because someone would have pointed out the 'Mac Only' line like I believed that was still effective today.

Sony Walkman Sport. So good.

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Walkman-Waterproof-Discontinued-Manufacturer/dp/B00BVUBS36

They're light, stable, easy to use, and get rid of wires. For ~$85, you've got a waterproof standalone MP3 player with 5+ hours of battery. I listen to podcasts on these on a daily basis and have ~200 songs for when I'm in the mood to kick and run a bit harder.

The man behind the iMac, iPod, iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch isn’t a genius designer?

The guy is responsible for more iconic designs than anyone else alive. He’s the man behind everything from the iMac G3 to the iPod Nano to the iPhone 4 to the Mac Pro G5 to the iPod Classic to the Apple Watch to countless others. That’s about as impressive a collection as any designer in history.

u/wtfisthisnoise · 1 pointr/headphones

I got mine for $180 from the Amazon Warehouse. iPods usually returned within 30 days and have full apple care. But if you don't like apple, the sansa clip is also cheap and reportedly pretty good. I haven't used one, but I'm positive someone will drop by and comment on it.

u/MonikerPseudonym · 1 pointr/running

I listen to audiobooks when I'm stuck on the treadmill. I use MortPlayer Audio Books on my Android device and am pretty happy with it. On the rare occasion I listen to one on an outdoor run I like to take along my ClipZip because it weighs nothing, works well, and would cost only ~$30 to replace.

u/TooSmalley · 2 pointsr/NoStupidQuestions

In my experience the iPod classic was sill the best one out there. All the new ones are kind of janky from my experience.

If I was you I’d think aboutupgrading the harddrive and replacing the battery, that alone could add a few years to a the iPod classic.

There is a market for high end lossless/flac mp3 devices like this and this if that’s more your speed

Also if you want worth mentioning the aftermarket for iPod touches are huge if you want a device with slightly more functionality

u/zelenoid · 1 pointr/running

Very cheap, extremely rugged, comes with a strong clip mount builtin into the unit. I route my headphones under my shirt and then clip the player onto the shorts.

Bonus over the shuffle: just needs a micro USB cable to charge or transfer stuff.

u/homeboi808 · -1 pointsr/BuyItForLife

It's just hard to imagine unless you are talking FLAC files from CD rips and stuff. Like 26GB means >3000 songs you regularly listen too, which is like >225 albums.

As for suggested ones, probably something like this Sony (expandable up to 192GB) or a FiiO.

I really was just turned sideways by that Apple comment as it doesn't make sense. A Mastered for iTunes AAC will be closer to the studio recording than an MP3 from Google's Playstore or from Amazon.

Notice if you have an apple cousin device, an older 7th gen or earlier ipod, then you will hear something playing inside, because these devices were made before SSD's were cheap enough and have hard disk drives.

But you won't hear making noise constantly while listening to music. It's much more energy efficient to only spin up the hard disk and load the next few songs into ram (no moving parts, much less power demanding) and then listen to the data from there. Particular if you have a long playlist and leave the ipod untouched, it can very easily anticipate what songs it will be requested to play, even if you put it on shuffle.

If you jump around your songs collection manually in an unpredictable manner, you'll hear the hard drive more because it's anticipation of what you were going to listen to was wrong and it will keep reloading song data.

EDIT: words

iBasso recently released the DX80 with a much improved UI that you could consider.

Other than that at this price you're looking at that or Fiio X5 2nd gen or a really good deal/2nd hand AK Junior. For the latter there's brand new one on sale at amazon at $400

I have to add that these have amps that will drive things better than your phone, but dont expect dedicated amp quality and power from these.

Has anyone ever used these? I know they're for pool use, and I never swim but I still think it would be handy to have a earbud/mp3 player combo. Are there any other mp3 players out there like this?

u/waspbr · 1 pointr/Swimming

I swim with the sony NWZ-S13 waterproof walkman, which also has bluetooth support so they aren't limited to use in the pool. Of course you cannot use bluetooth inside the pool.

If you dont care about bluetooth they have a cheaper line.

They work great as long as you take the time to choose the right earbud size for your ears. Also, never press the buttons underwater, but this is a non-issue.

I use an older version of these and I love them. Just switch the earbud caps if you're swimming or running in heavy rain. I have hyperhidrosis and I live in Thailand so I sweat like crazy and/or sometimes get caught in the monsoons, but they never fail me.

Hardware wallet absolutely needs screen to show what transaction is being signed.

I think it might be easier to adapt existing devices than to manufacture specifically for this purpose.

Say, there are cheap cell phones, they have screen and lots of processing power, so it might be possible to make a custom firmware which implements bitcoin stuff in a secure way.

It might be hard to make sure that it is actually secure (as it might be using bits from vendor's firmware), but there will be no problems with manufacturing.

Alternative approach: MP3 player like SanDisk Sansa Clip Zip. $30 in Amazon. Add Bitcoin signing functions to Rockbox open source firmware.

This will hold all your cd's and last for years. It also is pretty good with backing up your music, so it has the potential to last much longer than physical cds.

Not trying to be a pain in the ass, some antiquated technology is well worth keeping around. CD's are not one of those technologies.

Yeah, it's only water resistant if you don't open any flap. Either you use the embedded speaker or you could maybe find a bluetooth speaker set. The other option is going with the also water resistant sony walkman

Well, you can order another one here and if that isn’t something you want to do, there are FiiO audio players that are technically the modern equivalent.

They are definitely still in stock - for relatively cheap - http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Sansa-Clip-Player-Black/dp/B005FVNGRS - I just bought one last week.

Get the Zip - Install Rockbox on it - add a microSD card, go to crazy town playing doom on your mp3 player =D

I use the clip zip for audiobooks with no issue.

Get that instead. cheaper, battery lasts over 100 hours on a charge and plays anything you can toss at it. Will play high impendence headphones and needs no pre amp. Uses micro sd cards so you can swap out music any time. Ipods other than the classic are more trouble than they are worth.

I've got the regular Sansa Clip Zip - here.

I used a SanDisk Ultra 32GB MicroSDHC Class 10 UHS Memory Card without issue for a year.

Where are you getting that price? I paid $250 for a new one a few years ago. Also, current prices for a brand new copy of a discontinued device do not reflect the past pricing. Even with them off the market I was still able to find people selling it closer to my price. Even new ones.

At 5mb per song as his example, this holds 32000 songs at $230. That's $0.007 per song compared to his $0.3 which is 42 times higher.

Craigslist for my area has several $40 and cheaper items. I did some searches for ipod touch, iphone, android, and mp3

Here's a new player for $30 which I found in this article

I listen to music while I swim. My only complaint about my headphones is that I can't pull my cap over them. I use Sony NWWS413LM 4GB Sports... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CQMN2J0?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Well... there's always this. Still expensive as hell though. Might as well buy an ipod.

edit: Just saying. Careful. Links to iPod.

Sansa Clip Zip. (Amazon) They're a bit too small physically, imo, but they come with 4gb or 8gb integrated storage, which is expandable with microSD. You just drop music onto it from the filesystem. It doesn't support video podcasts, afaik. They start at $40, with the 8gb being $10 more.

It's also compatible with Rockbox, a super-customizable alternate firmware for portable music players.
