I needed a riser anyway to get the rack higher off the ground so I bought this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FAUF4TW?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00
Have to make sure you also buy an anti-rattle device to make sure it doesnt sway, but it works like a charm!
This is the carrier I bought btw: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00916MMJG?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00
I like cam straps because they're easier to work with than ratchet straps. I have Ancra straps that are fantastic. I'd definitely buy them again. I also prefer to use use Canyon Dancers to hold the bike still in my truck bed, but its rear wheel is nestled into the corner of the bed and acts as a chock, sort of.
I have a 5-gallon VP Racing fuel jug. It has served me well, but it's tough to mess that up. I imagine any decent jug with a hose will do.
My ramp is a generic folding metal one from Amazon. Says Raider on the side, but it's exactly like that one I linked. It takes some getting used to, but I use it to get my bikes into and out of my truck bed by myself. Even the one without a kickstand.
Have you looked into things like this: Car Driveway Curb Ramp - Heavy Duty Rubber Threshold Ramp - Also for Loading Dock, Garage, Sidewalk, Truck, Scooter, Bike, Motorcycle, Wheelchair Mobility & Other Vehicle - Pyle PCRBDR24 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075RPGSZM
From your description it sounds like something like this could help make it an easier approach.
I totally agree. I thought I remember him saying in the video it was a couple hundred $$ though? Either way, I have a newer truck I really want to avoid having to mount anything on it. I was looking at this one but it looks like it is a complimentary piece to a larger unit. Ever seen these? https://www.amazon.com/Rage-Powersports-SNO-EXT-Snowmobile-Extension/dp/B00EA31RSW/ref=sr_1_3?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1483914801&sr=1-3-spons&keywords=Snowmobile+Ramp&psc=1
Same here. I've never loaded it (dad's the one with the truck), but I've brought it down. When we move it, it's with a ramp like this. Put a ratcheting strap between it and the bumper/hitch to make sure it doesn't move while you load/unload. Never had an issue.
I bought this one and it works pretty good. As far as it being wide enough you could use a folding chair as a step onto the tailgate, alot of people do. Or you could buy two of them.

I just use 2 of these. I can load my z1000 into the back of a 4wd pickup without high centering but some low cruisers will drag.
Pro: Strong, I've used these ramps to load side by sides and (small) pickups. I use them several times a week and they have held up great.
Con: Since they don't fold they are a unwieldy to store and transport. But IMO the folding ones aren't as strong.
I would get some ramps like these. You should be able to get them cheaper from Walmart or an auto parts store. Easier then jacking it up and using stands.
Also, check out this oil change kit. I don't know if they ship to Canada. You may also find the parts cheaper from a dealer if you shop around.
i got these for my trailer, worked well. better than harbor freight versions that i returned
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LYVRD4H/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ASZSBZXI7CKY6&psc=1
This would be your best bet imo
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00916MMJG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_-C0dBbDHVV0EW
I know you're asking about ramps for getting your bike in the bed of the truck, but I use one of these and find it much easier to load and unload alone.
Yeah, it seems a little sketchy but I've never had any issues or concerns one I have my bike strapped down properly.
Unless I'm missing something, the hitch I installed from Amazon said it has a tongue weight capacity of 525 lbs. The dirt bike hitch I have weighs 50 lbs plus a DR350 (285lbs) puts safely under. It's pretty thick metal and held up going 70mph on highway.
The biggest issue is speed bumps because RAV4's aren't very high you scrape the ground if going too fast.
Buy ramp ends and turn 2"x8"s into ramps. If you want wider, buy two sets and turn more 2"8"s into one ramp. Hold them together with ratchet straps when you're using them so you can take them apart for easier handling and storage.
EDIT: I guess the downvote is because this tried-and-true solution is not squidly enough?
Yeah, I bought the same thing from amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Best-Choice-Products-SKY1375-Motorcycle/dp/B00916MMJG?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage
Gotta have some tools to assemble, but after that it's solid!
Me and my dad used a trailer hitch mounted dirt bike rack it held to bikes and worked good like this Black Widow AMC-600-2 Aluminum Double Motorcycle Carrier – 600lb. Capacity https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004HL5SF0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_7qFDCbW52KENR
What about something like this?
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0006I44WG?psc=1
That's definitely not a ladder, it's a loading ramp.
The only problem with this is the trailer is very heavy and over the weight limit that most small cars can safely tow. The single motorcycle Uhaul trailer weighs over 2000 lbs. You can still use it with a small car but gotta keep the speed lower.
The lightweight single motorcycle trailers are a solid option, like this on that weighs 285 lbs: https://www.amazon.com/Ultra-Tow-Single-Rail-Folding-Motorcycle-3806S084/dp/B004QHEE6O
There is also an option like this:
Rage Powersports Black Widow Hitch-Mounted Aluminum Motorcycle Carrier - 400 lb. Capacity https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001IUV1CM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_jP7PDb3WAXPP4
If you are looking for an ATV trailer get a YUTRAX. The off road tires let it go pretty much anywhere the ATV can go. I do kind of wish I had opted for the dual axel model for hauling firewood, but I can get a lot in this thing.
Check these ramps out
Also a low profile harbor freight jack, profit
I have used the Black Widow AMC-400 max 400# for my 300# 2008 XT250 with 2 handlebar and 2 rear foot peg straps with no issue 3 times now of varying 100+ mile distances including freeway. Check the max tongue weight of your hitch to make sure the combined weight is under max.
This is what I am using:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075RPKVV7/
Here's a set of ramps that won't break the bank.
Is there really much difference between models? Here's the one I have.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B7GHIGA/
This is a hauler that sits in the hitch. There's no axles
https://www.amazon.com/Sport-Motorcycle-Carrier-Hauler-Capacity/dp/B00P8F122C/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1505409228&sr=8-2-spons&keywords=motorcycle+hauler&psc=1
Trailer hitch is the way to go. Curt is the brand I would go with. You are not going to get anything to haul anything heavier through straps or roof racks.
For the Chevy volt you can get a Class 1 hitch, which is the smallest possible. It's a 200 pound max tongue weight, 2000 pound max pull.
This means that if the bicycle rack + bike is more then 200 pounds then that is no good. The hitch will run a 90-110 dollars. Usually you can install it yourself.. no welding or drilling is usually needed, but each car is different. If you are not confident or want somebody else to do it then it would probably be another 50-100 bucks.
Garages can build custom hitches for not much more expensive so if you really want class 2 somebody would build one for you.
You can get bike racks designed to hold the bike up by the tires for full suspension mountain bikes.
Or you can get one for a dirt bike:
https://www.amazon.com/Best-Choice-Products-SKY1375-Motorcycle/dp/B00916MMJGThat one is a small motorcycle rack for class 2 or better, which you will have to hack and shorten to fit into a class 1. The difference between the class 1 and class 2 is that class 1 has a stop in it to prevent class 2 stuff from fulling seating.edit: sorry the description in the ad was misleading. 2 inch hitch is class 3 or better. Class 1 and class 2 are 1 1/4 inch hitch.
You might be able to get away with a mountain bike rack if it's pretty heavy duty.
The alternative to that is to get a small trailer.
Small trailers are available for harbor frieght for cheap and people modify them to haul dirt bikes around. It's a bit more expensive and the most annoying part is that you'll have to register the trailer. The upside is that they are small enough you can hide them in sheds or put them against the wall in the garage. But it will have zero problem with that bike and any other equipment you would like to haul around.
I know I'm late to the thread but I have a 230 pound two stroke that I haul on one of those hitch carriers. This one was inexpensive and I have just driven highway with it. People swear by this thing for cross country and even bumpy mountain roads. Here a link to where I got it off amazon. Kage Racing ST3401 Hitch Mounted Motorcycle and Dirt Bike Carrier Hauler Rack with Ramp https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00B7GHIGA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_OqNdHVjcQGdLh only thing I don't like is the ramp is pretty shitty.
