Okay, so this may be something silly to just get into, but I've really gotten into cooking lately! I have the summer off from my college course, so I have more free time than I have in a long time, so I've started cooking dinner for my husband and myself more regularly. I love experimenting with different types of cuisine; so far I can cook some Thai, Mexican, some good steak sauce, and Italian. I would really love to learn to make sushi. I know the item is under the price limit, but I have other relevant stuff too if that matters. I want to start eating healthier, and I love love love good sushi. TBH guys I'm in some real need of encouragement. First of all, I think this is the first time my weight loss/bf reduction goals are actually doing something because I am constantly craving sugar. Before I started this I never even thought about sweets but now it's basically constant. I'm tired and my motivation is shot. IDK what to do anymore. It's tough right now, I've definitely got some post-holiday blues going on. I'm in a funk and I know it.

BQ Well, I'm from Michigan so we do a lot of stuff in winter and it's hard to pick just one. I love just going for hikes in the snow. I also like staying in side and making soup/tea and snuggling under blankets and just watching the snow fall. This morning I was on the way to work and I was listening to this podcast where they were talking about "hygge" which is a Danish word meaning something like "comfort" which is really important in Danish culture all the time, but especially so during the winter. I feel like us Michiganders to that do. I am trying to be more mindful of that, too.

Yesterday: I had an okay day. Work was rough, I'm working with a difficult consultant and it's making my life tough. During the drive home it went from snow to thunderstorm and it rained all night. But I did make some vegetarian sushi using this stupid thing I bought for like five dollars. It was really fun and messy. Great way to burn off some steam. But then I was too exhausted, didn't do my workout as planned. That's twice this week.

Yesterday I succeeded in trying something new.

Yesterday I failed to stay positive and hit my exercise goal.

Today I'm going to do my best to actually do my Strong Curves and my yoga. And also survive today. And eat well. I feel so drained right now and I don't even know why :/

make sure you have a good size pot to steam them in...a turkey fryer with some kind of insert that keeps the crabs out of the steaming liquid will do well (an overturned stainless mixing bowl could do the trick). Also remember to get your hands on a big can of Old Bay. Really no point in steaming crabs if you don't have it. fill a cereal bowl half full with kosher salt and then fill it to the top with old bay. mix. sprinkle over crabs (do it in layers)

Get live crabs. Large males if the can (females don't tastes as good and should be in the bay anyway). Crabs can actually survive quite a while out of the water if kept in the right conditions, so overnight fedex should be fine. Also get yourself a half dozen crab mallets ....opening claws and such. Re-heating crabs is bad bad bad.

Order a case of natty boh too. Pour a couple cans in the bottom, toss in equal cans of both water & vinegar and you should be good to go. Just make sure there's enough to steam for ~30 mins (likely less)

As for pricing, you're going to get raped. Take it like a man.

As for how many you need...you can prob get by with a half bushel. Experience bawlmorons could plow through a dozen crabs a no prob, but your friends' inexperienced kentucky hands are going to tire of picking crabs before they get to a dozen.

Steam a dozen ears of corn too. 'Cause it's awesome. I'd suggest silver queen, but whatever the local mega mart has will do.

Enjoy...my daughters and a family friend pulled a dozen and a half off their pier a few weeks ago and demolished them...sooo yummy.

yeah, it works well for cuts after you clean em up. There is waterproof medical tape that people use too.

You're guaranteed to cut yourself, try all the methods see what works best for you.

This is so wrong I don't even know where to start. There is no number of handles that defines anything, this isn't bicycle/ unicycle comparison.

That is a pot on his head and depending on the size it could be called something else like a "sauce pan". Then there are "saute pans" that aren't pans either, its just a small, deep, rounded bottom skillet. Skillets are also referred to as "fry pans" but when someone says pan I'm sure what comes to most peoples mind is something like a 21" half sheet.

I bought this set and it has served me well. The two mats are nice because I like to make both styles with rice on inside or outside so I cover one with plastic wrap and leave the other uncovered.

Another bit of unsolicited advice but I have been impressed with how my rice turns out when I follow the instructions in Sushi for Dummies. It is a nice starter book.

I don't have easy access to an asian market but I have found that between Wal-mart and the Meijer's store the next town over, I can get most of what I need. It took a while but my local wal-mart started selling sushi rice.

I'll provide this as an alternative to the teriyaki sauce recipe already posted. I'm afraid that I always just kind of ad things "to taste" without using a recipe, though.

For the marinade:

Start with soy sauce and sugar in a small pot set to low to dissolve the sugar. Start adding oyster sauce in small quantities to taste. Adding too much will overpower the mixture pretty easily, so taste after each bit added. Think of the oyster sauce as augmenting the mixture's flavor rather than taking it over as the main attraction. Add water to dilute if necessary to your tastes (I think I always end up adding a bit).

You'll probably need more sugar in the mixture than you think since the spam is already very salty. Let the sauce heat up a bit and then marinade the spam in it for about 20-30 minutes.

Fry in a nonstick pan. Even with non stick, the sugar tends to caramelize, so don't try to get it too crispy or you'll have a burnt mess on your hands. There are those who fall in the crispy camp for spam (I'm more in the soft-cooked spam camp), but soft is best for musubis. You're looking for just a light crisp on the outside.

As for the rice, just use any sushi rice recipe you like.

You can make the musubi without a press, but it's kind of a pain in the ass. If you don't want to wait for shipping, you can make a ghetto press by cutting a spam can in half. Don't ask me how though. Maybe a hack saw? I dont know.

Anyway, it's kind of nice to toast your seaweed in the oven a little before wrapping, even if it says the nori is already toasted. I prefer the nori to cover the whole musubi like in my ghetto press picture (as opposed to OP's partial nori covering).

Good luck. I like to make a lot at once. Refridgerating them can be a little problematic because the nori will become soggy but imo they are still good :P

Basically rice labeled 'sushi rice' will do, I used to get Kokuho Rose or something like that. He's also going to want seaweed sheets. Any Asian grocery store will have these, but the rice might come in really, really massive bags. I found some on Amazon that were more expensive per oz but more manageable in size.

The rice soaking is generally called for in a lot of sushi rice recipes, they claim it kind of jump starts the water absorption, but i don't really have any science to back that up.

Sushi rice is really sticky, a few grains of rice helps the seaweed edges stick to each other.

Storytime! I was so afraid of rolling sushi I actually bought a Sushezi. It is a terrible invention (it does actually work though), and I've long since realized that rolling my own is far easier than wrangling that contraption. Give rolling a try, and if you mess up, just eat it as a sushi bowl and it'll still be delicious! I believe in your sushi skills, internet stranger!

Actually, the link that is still in your comment is the knock-off version, it doesn't look to me that Amazon sells the real Sushezi or you aren't guaranteed to get one depending on the reseller. Here are the reviews for that one stating the obvious knock-off/quality control issues, 8% 1/5 star reviews. I was about to order it too, but I won't take the chance.

If you get noxious smells on your hands (say from garlic or tuna, etc), you can rub your hands on stainless steel. You can check with kitchen supplies on Amazon or in a store and they will have what looks like a stainless steel bar of soap, otherwise using a spoon or faucet will work. There's some sort of chemical reaction that happens and your hands will lose the noxious smell and pick up a metallic one. The metallic one will then wash away with soap and water.

DO NOT USE THAT KNIFE TO OPEN OYSTERS.

You don't need a sharp knife to open them. You need a stiff blade that's not brittle. The Opinel blade is very brittle. The tip will break off immediately.

I purchased a random device, the Sushezi, on Amazon that allows you to cheat on actually constructing/rolling typical sushi rolls.

I figured I'd give it a shot and see if I liked it... and now I've used it about once a week for several months. Once you have the staples mentioned by /u/unthused, you can even get imitation crab meat, some avocados, etc., at Aldi for next to nothing.

Various types of musubi.

I'm from Hawaii, and the traditional musubi is a layered thing with first a layer of rice, then a layer with fried spam, then another layer of rice, and you wrap that in seaweed.

It's very portable and a good lunch. If I'm lazy I'll just cook up some eggs with a bit of mirin in them and use that in place of the spam, or if I'm not lazy, I'll marinate some tofu in something overnight, cook that up and use that. You could also use quinoa or something, but I tried that once and wasn't able to get it to be sticky enough so the whole thing kind of collapsed.

Here is a cheap musubi press, and to make one you just make your rice and your protein center (in the shape/size of the press so it'll fit), lay down the seaweed with the press in the center of it, add a layer of rice, add a bit of soy sauce, press down, add your protein layer, with more rice on top, a bit more soy sauce, and press down again, then just push down on the press while lifting up the mold, and you have your brick, then you just wrap the seaweed around it (you can use a few grains of rice or whatever as a mild adhesive to keep it from coming apart).

Get a rice press. Make rice (calrose) and fry spam slices. Cut a sheet of nori to the size you want. Fill press loosely with rice, to the top. Smash down, remove from press, top with fried spam slice. Wrap nori around, wetting the edge so it sticks to the other end.
