Reddit mentions: The best thermoses

I think this is a milestone hurdle in any coffee quest. I went through a bunch of coffee mugs trying to find the one for me. Here's a few things that I ran into, and my final decision in a neatorama bullet point list:

• They will always be bigger than they look online
  
• The Contigo is amazing but a pain in the butt to clean
  
• You get the best length of heat and spill proof from the screw on top kind, but they aren't easy to drink "on the go"
  
• Handles are LOL at first, but sometimes very useful and dignified
  
  Anyway, I submit for your approval, my "perfect" travel mug. At least until something better comes along. Bask it in.
  
  I use this everyday, it's amazing to me. Keeps coffee hot for hours and makes an awesome "thuk" when you release the heat compression. 100% spillproof, with one small caveat. Sometimes a drop or two will stay past the seal point when you take a sip. Not a problem, just want to give you all sides. Super duper easy to clean as it divides totally down into component pieces so you can be a weekend warrior and pretend you're breaking down your rifle. There's an awesome indention all the way around that you can use to customize the mug. I wrapped mine with the guts from a piece of 550 cord and threw a S-biner on it and it looks awesome. I would very seriously consider weaving a friendship bracelet to wrap it up with, I like it so much.
  
  No matter which mug you buy, always pre-warm with hot water to keep coffee hot almost indefinately.

I'm teaching her how to fly right now and have been using food as a reward, but we ran out of papaya a couple of weeks ago, and our local bird store has been out of stock for a long time. Turns out that Whole Foods doesn't carry dried papaya either. Rawr! WL


5.) A book I should read! I am an avid reader, so take your best shot and tell me why I need to read it! The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I had heard about this when the movie came out in English. I liked the movie and then moved on with my life. Come this spring, I found myself facing a LOT LOT LOT of driving by myself, so I started borrowing audiobooks from the library. I borrowed all three of these books and REALLY enjoyed them. It wasn't at all what I expected. They're murder mysteries with a lot of themes about violence against women. When I learned about the author, it became that much more interesting. The author wrote these books with the intention of making 10, but died after the third one. They found them after he died. The themes about sexual violence stem from a gang rape he witnessed as a teenager. He never forgave himself for not being able to help her, so he channeled all those emotions into his writing later in life. Anyway.....interesting stuff. Good books. I recommend them :)


6.) An item that is less than a dollar, including shipping... that is not jewelry, nail polish, and or hair related! Pfft.


7.) Something related to cats. I love cats! (keep this SFW, you know who you are...) If I was a cat, this would be my JAM!


8.) Something that is not useful, but so beautiful you must have it. Dresses are admittedly useful for avoiding public indecency charges, but not really useful beyond that. BUT LOOK AT THE RAINBOWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WL


9.) A movie everyone should watch at least once in their life. Why? Not on my wishlist (it's on American Netflix though!), but everyone should be aware of the impact of plastic on the environment and our bodies. Education is everything. Plus, there's a newborn baby at the end.


10.) Something that would be useful when the zombies attack. Explain. 1. Stab zombie in the skull. 2. ??? 3. Profit. The reviews rave that it's super sharp and doesn't stick so it probably wouldn't get stuck in their skull like other knives. WL


11.) Something that would have a profound impact on your life and help you to achieve your current goals. I don't know if I'd use the word profound, but it would sure help me out. A big passion of mine is learning to ID birds. I'm pretty good at most birds, but finding information on juveniles is VERY difficult sometimes. I've used this book before to help identify birds in hand, but I think the information regarding juvenile plumage would help me identify young birds from afar. It's even part of my job to identify birds! WL


12.) One of those pesky Add-On items. This is an Add-On item, but it's also a hair addon =P Not on my WL, but I'm losing my hair like crazy so I might have to look into these >.>


13.) The most expensive thing on your list. Your dream item. Why? This isn't the most expensive item on my list (that was #8), but it's the one that would help me the most! When I do field work, I tend to have a lot of gear on me at once, and the extra strain of binoculars around my neck tends to give me some really freaking sore muscles. A harness would be MUCH easier on my shoulders/neck/back. I start field work again in October, so I plan on buying it for myself by then anyway =] WL


14.) Something bigger than a bread box. EDIT A bread box is typically similar in size to a microwave. This is larger than the average bread box.

15.) Something smaller than a golf ball. I am smaller than a golf ball! WL

16.) Something that smells wonderful. This smells amazing!!! I'm infatuated with cinnamon, but had to stop using cinnamon Crest YEARS ago because I developed a bad reaction to it. This stuff is expensive, but the company is very environmentally responsible and I feel good giving my business to them. WL


17.) A (SFW) toy. This seems pretty SFW unless you're playing Cards Against Humanity. evil grin WL

NO PROBLEM! YOU'LL HAVE ICE AT THE END OF THE DAY!! Seriously, Thermos needs to pay me for how much I rave about their stuff. My water bottle has still had ice in it after three days AND being refilled twice. No joke.

You're not going to make any great progress on a PC build for that price. Besides, PC tech is changing so quickly, you shouldn't buy any one piece of it until you can buy all of it.

Somehow this has been coming up on several subreddits and I've been blathering on and on ever since.

Factors to look for:

1. Any double-walled, vacuum-sealed travel mug will keep things hot for hours. Some will be better than others, but plenty are good enough that you don't have to worry too much about which you get. The only thing that would impact this is that certain mugs require you to remove the whole lid, allowing lots of cold air into the mug. The smaller the drink opening, the better it'll be.
   
   
2. The thing you really need to worry about is the drinking mechanism. Some have flip-tops, some have sippy lids, some have push-button seals, etc etc. You just need to think about your needs and figure out which one you want.
   
   Some of the best I've found:
   
   
3. Contigo. If you're going to be drinking on a bus, you HAVE to go with the Contigo. It's the only possible way I've ever seen to avoid spilling altogether. It's also super popular, and good. You just have to make sure the sippy lid doesn't get dirty, since there's no way to cover it up or whatever. They have a few variations, but this style is the most common one.
   
   
4. Thermos Sipp. Push-button seal, and the shape mimics the way a drinking glass works, and exposes the liquid to the air a little, so you can sip more easily. More pleasant to drink, though hard in a moving vehicle.
   
   
5. JoeMoXL mug. Push button seal plus a leak-proof lid, 360 degree drinking, plus a tea infuser basket if you're a tea fanatic.
   
   I would recommend staying away from flip-top mugs, because as far as I've seen, they always leak. Sad but true. If you can find one that doesn't, then great.
   
   I think the biggest thing to look for is the drinking mechanism. With the tiny sippy lid (like on the Contigo), you have to make sure the drink is the correct temperature, or it'll be too hot to drink. With those that expose the liquid to the surrounding air a little, you can sip more easily, but then it's harder to use on a bus or whatever. I think that's the biggest issue to worry about when searching.

For the sweet tooth (like my dad, these are all things he likes):

• A candy jar or bowl filled with her favorite candy.
  
  
• An artisan ice cream scoop.
  
  
• An ice cream maker. You could get an ice cream recipe book as well.
  
  
• One of my dad's favorite gifts was a sugar dispenser... I think that shows his level of sugar commitment.
  
  
• Some artisan marshmallows.
  
  
• A milk frother that doubles as a hot chocolate maker.
  
  For the executive (like my mom, these are all things she likes):
  
  
• A high quality thermos for coffee on the way to work.
  
  
• A smart home setup, maybe an echo and some smart outlets or the google home. Really good for turning lights on/off, asking for the weather and news, listening to music, etc.
  
  
• A FitBit to help her keep healthy even working long hours.
  
  
• A popcorn maker that allows you to make non-microwaved popcorn in the microwave.
  
  
• A white noise machine. If she has any trouble sleeping this thing is AMAZING.
  
  
• A Roku or Chromecast that makes it easier to watch Netflix on the TV.
  
  
• Wine tasting or cooking class that you can do together. Really my mom loves doing stuff with her family.

Okay, first:

1.) Get a doctor who is not stupid and useless. Holy shit. You probably have a fever, yes? How hard would it have been to write a "my patient has fever and should stay home until s/he is fever-free without medication for 24 hours." Does your doctor only treat the flu? "Sorry about your cancer diagnosis, but it's not the flu, so my hands are tied." Jesus fuck.

2.) Does your school require you to bring in a doctors note to take sick time? That's bullshit, and unless it's an unavoidable district-wide policy, I would take it into consideration as you fill out your intent form for next year. That would help me stay positive, personally.

Moving on to how not to get sick:

• Eight hours of sleep every night, more if you're already sick, you feel like you're going to get sick, or if a bunch of your kids are sick. Since you have Ethereal Ghost Flu it'll be really easy to get a leg up on training yourself to fall asleep earlier. Do you have audible? I like to turn off the lights at about 9:00 and listen to a podcast or an audiobook...I find I fall asleep much earlier than I would if I were reading and waiting to feel sleepy.
  
• Eat right, exercise (even if all you can manage is a brisk walk every day), all that common sense stuff.
  
• Two of everything. There is your stapler and their stapler. Your pencils and their pencils. You don't touch their stuff, they don't touch your stuff. Have them turn their work into an inbox, rather than handing it directly to you.
  
• This is getting into crazy person territory, but when kids start to get sick I start hitting commonly-touched things (doorknobs, projector buttons/remotes, community supplies) with a Clorox wipe twice a day, and I make it a classroom job to dispense a pump of hand sanitizer to everybody on the way out the door to lunch. They fight over who gets to do it and I only feel a little bad about myself. It's the best.
  
• If you have chronic allergies or sinus problems or anything else that complicates head colds, make sure to get it under control once you've found a doctor who isn't stupid and useless. I used to get a sinus infection or some other complication every time I had a cold, and I would reliably get bronchitis every spring, right around the time that my cat was shedding her winter coat. Now that I'm treating my allergies instead of sitting around coughing and saying "well, I guess this is my life now," that doesn't happen anymore.
  
  How to go in sick and not die:
  
  
• This is not medical advice: did you know that Advil and Tylenol are different kinds of drugs and can be taken together? If you're taking cold medicine, double check that it doesn't already have Tylenol in it, because doubling up on Tylenol is bad.
  
• Make yourself a big thermos (if you have Prime and live in places with free same day delivery this excellent thermos can be at your house tomorrow - today, if you get on it like immediately - if you buy it and something else to get you over $35, such as this tea) of peppermint tea to bring to work. Peppermint tea is my secret weapon...it's great for sore throats (illness-related sore throats or just the "I talked all day" kind), nausea, and sinus problems, without the sedating effects of other go-to herbal teas, like chamomile. I actually hate mint and I drink it all the time anyway because it's so effective.
  
• If you have a fever, dress in layers, or just lean into it and bring a shawl.
  
• Kids love the role reversal of being the one to take care of you. It's a great empathy lesson and 5th graders should be mature enough to handle it for a few days, especially if you've built good relationships with them. They will see that you are feeling awful and want to help you. Let them read for you, pass out and collect papers, operate the projector, etc.
  
• Make sub plans for yourself. Give them work they can do semi-independently. Find Problem of the Week for math and let them work it in groups and present their solution to the class. This would be a great time to have them respond to some writing prompts or do a packet about comma sense or something in Language Arts. If they have I'm Done disease, Xerox a coloring sheet onto the back of the packet so they can do something quietly when they're done instead of pestering you about how done they are. Anything you've been meaning to have guidance in to talk about? Now is a good time.
  
• Shut your door, cover the window, wrap yourself up in your leaning-in shawl, and take a nap during your planning time. If you can swing it, get your team to cover you during recess and take a nap then as well. Lunch too.
  
  Good luck. Not that it helps you now, but it really does get better...most teachers get down to one good solid illness per year after a few years in the job.

It's 16 oz or 473 ml but there are smaller sizes available. I drink the whole thing with French Press and a bit of milk as my morning coffee.

What I love about it is that I can leisurely drink a large coffee over 30 minutes and the temperature stays hot.....and this is with the top completely off (I don't like drinking through the hole even though it's well designed....would use it while driving though). I like this tumbler so much I even use it when I am home. If I am drinking this much coffee in a conventional mug I will end up chugging the last third or half because it's getting cold.

There are options with handles but I like the clean look of the tumbler. You can grab it how you want, ice water or boiling water inside, you will feel nothing. You can also set it down on anything because it's cool to the touch. People at work have commented on the stylish look of it as well.

With the lid, the coffee will stay hot enough to drink for hours. I wouldn't drink 8 hour coffee even if it was in a thermos but in theory you could. However it'll definitely keep on your commute to work if you want to drink it at your desk instead of on the way.

I'm sure she already has basic nursing necessities...the three things I absolutely must have at work are:

I have the Bodum Brazil french press and I really like it. It's super easy to clean, you can just unscrew the filter, rinse, and put it in the dishwasher after cleaning out the grinds. It comes in a 12 ounce size, which might be what you're looking for. Bodum is typically a good brand to go with. All on Amazon.

With the French Press, you have to pour the coffee out of the press immediately after you've pressed the filter. Otherwise it'll continue brewing and get gross. I have a 16 Ounce Thermos so I pour straight into that after preheating, seal it up and then I'm good. I bring a coffee mug and empty a little bit in when I drink it. It keeps coffee hot for hours. You'll need some sort of insulated apparatus to pour your coffee in to if you make more than one cup.

For beans - check out this post for a local roaster near you. I only really know philly and LA beans, beyond that I don't really know which would be good to get. If you're totally lost and don't know where to start, go with a subscription service like Moustache Coffee Club. They send you a bag of beans every month, couple of weeks or every week if you choose. It's all great coffee from some of the best roasters in LA. Their prices are some of the best. Other subscriptions LOOK like they cost less, but if you factor in price, shipping and amount they ship, Moustache is actually significantly less expensive. Free shipping, about 17.50 a bag total, for quality fresh roasted coffee. That still factors out to less than a dollar per cup of coffee, which is much less than some cups you can buy most coffee shops.

Don't get beans on Amazon. You should look for somewhere that can send you beans that are fresh roasted, within a couple days of being roasted. It's a huge difference.

INSTANT COFFEE!!!
If I'm out and near a coffee shop, I'll stop to enjoy a fresh brewed coffee but at home, I use instant coffee. If you're in the 90% of the population who can't tell the difference between Starbucks' Pike Place roast and Blonde roast (those might even be the same, I have no idea), then chances are you'll enjoy a quick cup of instant. And if you are adding cream and sugar, the gap between instant and brewed coffee gets even less noticeable.

In my work backpack, I keep snack-sized ziplock baggies with measured amounts of instant coffee, sugar free creamer (I like chocolate), and splenda. If I'm at a client site or in my hotel room, as long as I have hot water and my 16 ounce thermos, I have an inexpensive yet tasty coffee for pennies.

FACT: Instant coffee is the cheapest way to drink coffee. It costs less than brewing coffee at home.

My advice is to have a canister of instant along with whatever things you like to add to your coffee. For the frequent (or daily morning) cup/thermos, microwave some hot water and dump it in. Take people up on the french press for when you want a little something extra. And of course, patronize those coffee shops that offer good coffee and friendly service.

Oh, I almost forgot this thermos is a game-changer (http://www.amazon.com/Stanley-Classic-Hand-Vacuum-16oz/dp/B007VG761C). It holds 16-oz (2 cups of coffee) and will keep coffee hot FOREVER (well, hours). The lid dissembles is seconds for easy cleaning. It fits in a car cup holder and does not leak, even when stored upside down. When it's not holding coffee, it can keep a Coke cold FOREVER (well, hours).

EDIT: In my kitchen canister, I mix 1/2 regular and 1/2 decaf so my 16-oz thermos has only the caffeine of a standard 8-oz cup.

I have the same issues as OP, and I drink that much water a day because im always thirsty, but I pee every hour so it doesnt seem to help my other issues. Going to an endocrinologist and checking in with my nephrologist soon, but in the meantime it's annoying. I keep a sweet awesome water bottle always full, because having a nice one with a counter in the lid keeps me motivated to drink more. I take it everywhere with me, and that one has a lock so it never leaks in my purse.

I have travel mugs from David's tea. They have have the ones that unscrew on top, or flip open. They have kept my tea and other drink hot for hours and icy cold for just as long.

I would also recommend Zojirushi tumblers (like this one), they are excellent as well, or Thermos tumblers (like this).

Just decide on what kind of design you want, flip open or screw open top, and then which size fits you better, as in 12oz or 16 oz or 20 oz. Most of them are stainless steel inside which is excellent and most tops are easy to clean.

I would recommend travel mugs from any of those brands, as me and my family have used them, and the only reason i ever get a new one, is because i want a different color or different capacity.

I second the wrap idea. Also, if you are able to make an investment, I would recommend an insulated lunch jar. I'm running around campus all day so I just pack my snacks and lunch in this...

I usually have some grapes or carrot sticks in the top compartment, leftovers in the middle, and the bottom is meant for soup but I usually just pack an additional side dish in there, like cucumber salad or cottage cheese. The little tote bag it comes with is great too, my water bottle fits perfectly in there, or you could stash a banana or a snack bar. Good luck!

Most important: Get one with a vacuum seal. Nothing else works as well. Referencing the comment from /u/0accountability... There are Contigo Autoseals with and without the vacuum seal.

I recently bought two "actual" Thermoses. For something I love and use every day I feel they're inexpensive (mine were $25 and $30 )and after a few months of every day use, I'm a huge fan. My recommendation, look through the Thermos brand products on Amazon and on Thermos.com. Find one that "Keeps hot for 24 hours", then look for other features that you're interested in. (How it looks, does it have a caribeener, does it float, etc.)

I bought one, loved it so much I decided to get one with a caribeener and gave the "old one" to my wife who loves it as well.

I have only used mine for cold liquids, but I've been really impressed by the quality and performance. They both keep drinks cold for 12-24 hours (REALLY!) It does depend on external temp and starting temp of the liquid but I have been astonished by their ability maintain temperature. Judging from my experiences with the cold, I expect the hot to do very well.

  I had this porcelain version of the mug you linked to for years and loved it. I was so sad when I dropped it. I really should buy a new one. Anyway, the inside was always clean, the top was easy enough to clean even if it was silicone, and the insulation was great.

That's a tough one. There are a lot of brewing devices under $25.

Looking in there, I saw an Aeropress (My favorite way to make a single cup of black coffee), I saw a super cheap v60 pourover device for like $5 which would leave you money to buy some gourmet coffee to go with it.

If he really loves good coffee you could order some stuff from stumptown coffee or blue bottle or one of those fancy places online.

a bag of coffee is never a bad gift for someone who likes coffee. a brewing device is a bit riskier as they may already have one and some of them require other gear and you don't know what he has and doesn't have.

Also worth mentioning are these Zojirushi thermoses. The Zojirushi ones are made with some kind of black magic that keeps heat trapped inside for amounts of time that defies physics. There's the one I linked which pours into a cup or there's the other style that you drink straight from. I prefer the cup style because the coffee stays burning hot for so long that I need to pour it into the cup to let it cool while I sip. I always burn my tongue on the other style though it's better when driving. I have both. Only bad thing is it is a few dollars over your mark. But all the good Secret Santa gifts go a little over. ;)

I don't have any experience with the newer version (which also comes as a 20 ounce), but I'd assume it's pretty good. I have quite a few different Stanley thermoses, as well as the mug. All of them hold temp well, whether it be cold or hot. The only time one leaked was when I didn't fully tighten the lid, otherwise no issues. They are also pretty tough....I've dropped them a few times while hiking, and they've been fine. I'm not sure why Stanley gets so much hate online, I've always had great luck with their products.

HydroFlasks are of extremely bad quality. For food (like stews, soups etc.). I love the Thermos Stainless King for food https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008JC76XA/. If you fill in a hot soup ~80°C in there it will be still mouth burning hot a good 10 hours later. TIP: when making a stew you can actually have it be slightly undercooked (not talking raw meet, but let's say a bit chewy still), as it will keep on cooking in the thermos. similarly I had some incredible stews, because after transferring them from the hot sauce pan straight into the thermos it kept stewing for another 8 hours, and the meat was basically falling apart. had those on a great amount of hikes and treks.

The other trick I did at my last job was to get up and refill my bottle once every hour. It would make me race the clock to do a certain task or amount of work before getting up to pee and refill it again.

Because if I was drinking a bottle an hour and getting up every time, I had to pee every hour... which meant phone games and reddit every hour from 5-10 minutes an hour depending...

It made me a happier, faster worker, more hydrated, and I got paid an hour to pee EVERY day... (7 minutes to pee/refill every hour give or take extra pooping time X 7 work hours a day = 49 minutes).

It also helps you poop more if you drink more water and relax on the toilet. And I’d always say, save money on the toilet paper while also getting paid to shit!

I started with an OXO and had it for years. it was spill proof, kept my coffee hot for hours and hours, the spout was comfy, but the lid mechanism didn't break apart for cleaning. Eventually this became a problem... seals stretched and I would have to find creative ways to keep the breather hole clear of coffee particulate.

About a year ago I replaced the oxo for a Thermos.. The lid breaks apart for easy cleaning, and it certainly keeps the contents hot. So hot, in fact, that It took a while to get used to how much hotter the coffee was. after a year or so, its the only complaint I have. Coffee is too hot to drink sometimes.
Both mugs are stainless inside, but the thermos is unibody and the oxo had a plastic top portion.

When I handle a big party I just make a Jungle Bird or a Zombie scaled up to this container, leaving room for about 8 oz of crushed ice, shake it like crazy to chill and get a little dilution, seal, put in fridge till the party is about to begin. I always shake the container a bit before pouring it into a glass with ice, smack a mint sprig and put it in there. Easy.

For a third drink you could do a Moscow Mule, people fucking love those. Combine 1/2 oz lime juice and 2 oz vodka in a shaker per order, shake with ice, strain into however many glasses evenly, and top with 4 oz of ginger beer each. Ez-pz. at parties lime juice makes people feel fresh and alive. You can also make a huge batch of margarita.

Have some coke around and do jack and coke. Have some Gosling's Black Seal and do Dark and Stormy's (2 to 1 of ginger beer to rum) with the ginger beer.

This is going to be rough. Try your best to not have to do this, if you aren't a pro, this will be a nightmare for you.

I have a 1/2 gallon klean kanteen at home - brushed, and it's a very nice product, great for mixing large amounts of drinks, etc - but it has no insulative properties.

For work bottles - I cannot recommend this one enough: IT IS FANTASTIC. I've given them as gifts, people love them. Ice STAYS as ice for 10 hours or more.

I see a lot of recommendations for Hydroflask here. As an owner of one I can tell you 100% they aren't buyitforlife. Don't get me wrong I LOVE mine and use it every day. But three months in and it has a bunch of dents from very small bumps and like 2 foot drops . The coating is also chipping off on the bottom from normal use.


If you want buyitforlife quality I highly recommend another one I've used for years now, Thermos. Doesn't dent (or at least hasn't on me over the years) Just like hydroflask keeps water cold 24 hours but UNLIKE hydroflask, keeps liquid piping hot 24 hours. Nope, Zojirushi!

I've gone through three to four mugs (Tervis, Thermos, Contigo, and now the Zojirushi) looking for the perfect one that is high quality but also is resistant to absorbing flavors...contigo quickly failed that one, as well as not allowing ample room for the coffee scent to get to your nose...ever tried eating while sick? Can't taste much, found it was often that way with the contigo...and if not that, it tasted like plastic :/

This one seems to be a winner so far! Really though, it can be obnoxiously hot at times so I'm thinking of popping an ice cube or two in there to cool it down a bit before i seal it, other wise, even 12 hours later, it'll still scald me haha.

The Corningware one is a piece of crap. It's meant for soup and even then doesn't do a good job. I don't reccommend it at all. (Source: used to work in a Corningware store.)

Perhaps a lined metal bottle? I had a Laken brand aluminum bottle and because it had some sort of lining, my water didn't taste funny after a while. I assume it would work well for coffee as well.

David's Tea has a glass travel mug that's leakproof.

Starbucks has a ceramic travel mug (stainless steel on the outside) but it has a lot of bad reviews.

I bet you'd find something that would work for you at a Homegoods store. They seem to have lots of random stuff that might fit the bill.

Honestly, this is the travel mug I use and it's amazing. I lived in Chicago during the coldest winter most of the midwest has seen in over twenty years. It got down to -40F and that was on a good day. With this mug, my tea that I made in the morning was too hot to drink even hours later unless I opened the bottle and let it cool down at work. And I commute by bike and train. So I'm out a lot.

I know way too much about travel beverage containers for my own good.

I know I'm a little late to the party on this thread, but this bento lunch box (there's also a Mr. Bento which is one container bigger) is awesome. It's insulated, big enough to fit soup, a salad and some crackers cheese and meat or whatever else you choose. There are a lot of Flickr groups and websites that have bento lunch recipes and it eventually becomes fun to try and figure out what you'd like to make next.

Those Stanley ones are killer. You can't drink directly from them, but if you preheat them, they'll keep things hot for like 24 hours. As in still too hot to drink, in some cases.

I have a Thermos-brand double walled flask I love (but it's only ~1L). My Hydroflask and KleanKanteens are also very good at keeping things hot, but they're even smaller. All three of these brands might make larger sizes, if that helps expand your search.

All the people I know who've owned glass tumblers have had them break. I'm usually very careful with my stuff, so I bought one too, but it broke within 6 months. It looked nice while it lasted, but what a waste of $25.

This one from Zojirushi is the best one on the market and a great example of Japanese engineering. They ripped off the design from Nissan, which at the time had the most well-designed tumbler on the market, but they made several modifications that made it even better. The older model maxes out at 16 oz, but the newer model comes in 20 oz. The newer model also has a high quality non-stick lining that should prevent any odors. Also, it's small enough to fit in a BMW cup holder.

They're a little expensive (around $32), but they last forever. My parents have used the older model daily for 3 years, and the mugs still look brand new.

Interesting that Amazon apparently has a category called "Commuter & Travel Mugs"…and also a category called "Travel & To-Go Drinkware." The Zojirushi is #1 in the former, and the Thermos Stainless 16-oz is king of the later category. One wonders how many other travel/mug categories there are.

I own 16-oz thermos and really like it with two exceptions: The finish is wearing off the top of the mug, exposing the stainless steel beneath. And the bottom of the mug is smaller than a lot of modern car cupholders, meaning the thing is prone to tipping back and forth in cupholders that don't have one of those springy tensioner mechanisms. Luckily it's highly spill-resistant (It's been sideways in my passenger seat before without issue), so the tipping isn't really a big deal. You could honestly keep this thing sideways in the car seat next to you.

Also, I accidentally misplaced one of the rubber gaskets while cleaning my Thermos. I mailed Thermos and they sent me a complete replacement lid (all components included) free of charge. Huge props to any company that is committed to that level of customer service.

That said, I wouldn't toss this thing inside a backpack, or otherwise leave it to its own devices if it weren't right side up. It also won't keep your coffee hot for half a day, though it will keep it warm for an hour or two, which is plenty more than most folks need.

tl;dr: If you're looking for more of a "thermos" mug, I'd go with the Zojirushi (I'm actually probably going to order one for my backcountry pursuits as modern Thermos "thermoses" are apparently garbage). If you're looking for something to use in the car, I'd definitely recommend the Thermos travel mug.

My wife got one of these thermoses. Comes with a folding spoon inside the cap and keeps whatever's inside hot for hours.

When we use it, we'll do things like curries (indian/thai/japanese) or soups, and then she'll bring a small tupperware of rice or some bread. Also good for soups, fried rice, porridge, really anything that needs to be kept hot, but it works best for saucy items. One thing I've wanted to try but haven't is something like a tupperware of cold pasta and cheese, and fill up this thing with hot spaghetti sauce and meatballs.


Another option for a "nicer" but less flexible system would be a bento box thermos like this one. What I don't like about these is that they're meant to be used in a specific way; i.e. a hot soup/sauce, a warm side (typically starch like pasta or rice), and a cold salad. It basically slowly leaks heat everywhere, and I prefer to have one really hot dish, and will just deal with having a cold starch if needed.

Yeah, I wouldn't do it. I'd rather not have plastic melting into my coffee. Even if you were to do it safely, luke warm coffee isn't very good.

I'm gonna link you to this thing. It is by far the best tumbler I've ever used for hot coffee (or even cold coffee). It doesn't leak, it keeps everything super hot for a really long time, and is really easy to drink from.

For lunches I use this Thermos food container thingy. If you heat stuff up in the morning it'll keep it hot all day. Holds 24oz which is plenty for me, but if you need more food you could get two of them. Anyway, I think it's a good solution for those of us with no way to heat our lunch during the day. Good luck!

What size? I have a Zojirushi thermos that keeps my coffee hot for a long time. My coffee doesn't last more than 4 hours, but it stayed pretty close to original temps for those 4 hours. It holds about 16oz. For larger sizes though, you might want to consider a Thermos brand as the Zoji's get pretty expensive.

I paid under $25 at the time. You could track the prices and wait till it drops again. Again, this is if your batches are 16oz or less. They also have a cheaper 12oz version too if that suits you better.

My husband swears by thermos. It keeps things hot or cold for hours, it doesn't leak and they have some pretty nice looking ones. :) we wash it on the top shelf of the dishwasher and they are still going after 10 years. good luck!

Yup, getting into my car in the morning can be intense. Often I have to use the passenger door to dump all my stuff before sitting in the driver's seat.
I have yet to find a single bag that really works for everything, but some things that help me are:

• Laptop bag (just a plain old tote bag) is slim and can sit on my shoulder
  
• Purse that can also sit on my shoulder (or other shoulder)
  
• Insulated lunch bag with handle long enough to fit on my forearm
  
• Three options for keys: (1) Easy access pocket for quick in & out (2) Keys on a single ring that I can hold with my pinky finger and (3) Keys clipped on a string/tether that dangles out of my bag between the front door & my car and later my car and office door. It's long enough that I can lock/unlock doors without unclipping.
  
• Insulated coffee cup that I can put in the lunch bag that (1) won't warm up my cold items, (2) won't get cold from cold items and (3) won't leak if it falls over.
  
  It's a system... Sometimes I also have to bring my shopping bags for grocery shopping afterwards, and then I just look full on bag-lady. I also always try to leave space in my purse for the scarf/cardigan/layers that inevitably come on in A/C but need to be taken off outside (S. Florida).
  I'm also on the hunt for a great purse organizer. I've been looking at the chameleon organizer, but I'm still looking around.

Looks great! I drink pourover and Aeropress coffee pretty much exclusively, and I like this design. I think it needs to be strong enough to withstand the downward pressure of pressing the Aeropress, which, depending on the type of filter used, can require a lot of downward force. Looks sturdy enough. I would also suggest making it tall enough--spacious enough between the filter and the mug--to accommodate various travel mugs and taller tumblers. I often take my insulated tumbler to the local pourover bar, and it doesn't fit under their brewing station, so they have to waster a paper cup brewing and then pouring into my tumbler. One other thing--depending on how busy the coffee shop is, you may want to make a 3- or 4-spot rather than a 2-hole design.

Zojirushi has some of the best travel mugs period. Mine will keep my coffee hot all day and if I forget to drink it (rare) it will still be hot the next morning. Disassembles easily for thorough cleaning and comes in a variety of sizes and colors! It also fits perfectly in any cup holder because it's slim design and can easily be operated with one hand while driving.

Be careful about Stanley mugs, some reviews say the quality has dropped.

• A thermos of hot chocolate/soup is magnificent.
  
  
• Bring a Snickers bar for after the dive too. The sugar and protein can get your blood/metabolism pumping and it's a good snack to hold you over until you get to your next hot meal
  
  
• Fill a ≈gallon sized, insulated jug with hot water and do your best to keep it warm (wrapping it in a towel or some neoprene material from a fabric store works great). Dunk your hands in there if they're too cold to move around (it's hard to warm up your hands and fingers). Otherwise, don't forget chemical hand warmers packs (but they stop working once they get wet)
  
  
• An extra towel and a complete extra change of clothes are a good backup
  
  
• Have a setup plan and stick to it to change in and out of gear. Minimize any time where you aren't wearing a hat/gloves/jacket/etc. Body heat is quickly lost and it takes forever to return when you're wet and your body temp is down
  
  
• Ditch your gear, and immediately get out of your wet scuba gear. Break down your scuba rig well after you're dry, warm, and stabilized

You don't need to spend that much on a backpack, an LL bean or jansport will cost less, last you well over 4 years, and are backed by solid warranties. Not saying that pack isn't nice, but with the budget you're working with I'd personally drop that one down a notch.

For coat I'd consider a nice arctic carhartt and maybe a cheap frog togg rain jacket you could toss on over it on a day you plan on getting wet for an extended period.

As far as long johns go, any will last you. Merino wool is a great material for these, but I have several fleece based solutions that are very warm and cost quite a bit less.

A lunchbox item like this one. This is a 24-ounce one, and there is a 16-ounce one, too. Cooking and food preparation would be necessary, but in the long run, it promotes healthier eating, and it helps save some money from not buying lunch and eating out for lunch all the times. I'm just going to butt in here and recommend this guy. I got one a week ago and I'm extremely happy with it. I got some coffee from my favorite place this morning at around 9:30am and stuffed it in my bag. I had a pretty crazy day and was only able to take a few sips of coffee, it's now 7:15pm and I took it out of my bag, took a swig and it is still pretty damn hot. It also tastes exactly the same as when I got it this morning. I'm telling you this thing is awesome, I'm picking up another one for my permanent roommate.

i have this 2 QT (64 oz) Stanley thermos and like it a lot. its huge so a little unwieldy and hard to clean, but keeps stuff hot or cold well with a huge capacity.
i use it for an electrolyte soup thing i drink during fasting though.

for ketochow i bring a concentrated mix of 2 or 3 servings in one blender ball container. and i have another container for my coffee.
so i drink the coffee then i pour 1/3 (if it was 3 servings) of the concentrated ketochow mix into my coffee thermos, add more water, shake it up and drink. this is easier for me than bringing 3 blender bottles (or even my giant stanley) plus coffee thermos.

if you want a ~40 oz thermos stanley has a 35 oz and 45oz. I have no experience with the one you linked. good luck

I use a Thermos Backpack Bottle for all my hot or cold beverage needs. It keeps stuff hot of cold for hours. I doesn't leak. It has a little latch on the top so you can securely close it. I even put it in my purse with books and things! When you drink from it, it is like drinking from a cup, so you get the aroma of the beverage. It is fairly easy to clean. The only problem I have had with mine is that the color (mine was brown) came off and now it is just silver steel. It is steel inside and out. Feel free to ask me more questions. To improve upon this habit, get a bottle that you like and is easy to carry. I carry a Zojirushi because I personally like the "metallic" taste you tend to get with metal bottles and this bottle is slim so it tends to fit easily in my back pocket when I'm walking around. For those that wear form fitting clothing, that may not be an option for you.

I have always loved my Zojirushi Stainless Steel Mug. Its easy to clean, has a locking lid so I can throw it in my bag for my morning commute, and the cap is spring loaded so I can open it with one hand.

My only complaint is that it keeps my coffee hot for too long. If you want to drink it right after you pour it in you better take off the cap and let it sit out for a few mins first.

Thermos Sipp 16-Ounce Vacuum-Insulated Travel Tumbler, Stainless Steel

This one has worked out great for my girlfriend. I got her one and she loves it. Keeps the coffee super warm and can drink anytime.

I like this. Its a little on the expensive side, but it keeps my water cold for a really long time. This is my favorite design. It has a nicer o-ring and its good for hot beverages, too.

I have a 15-year old stainless steel double-wall Thermos that isn't all too different from this or this. It certainly does a good job of keeping things warm for long periods of time. I've forgotten it on my desk at work overnight half full, and it was usually still steaming a bit the next morning when I dumped it out (24 hours later). The trick with these or anything like it, is to pre-heat by filling with boiling water and letting it sit for 5-10 minutes before filling it with your beverage.

As for flavor, I've never really noticed any flavor loss, but I've mostly used it for coffee or strong black teas like Earl Grey. I would imagine delicate green teas probably wouldn't do so great being kept warm for long periods of time regardless of what they're in.

This is the best container. It won't even spill too much if the lid's left open, it locks and maintains a seal really well in a bag, and if anything it's too good at keeping your drink hot. Why: it has the best heat retention of the vacuum insulated mugs/flasks I’ve used. If you put hot coffee or water in it, it will still be hot after 7-8 hours. Now I don’t take that long to drink coffee. If I’m going fishing, it’s nice to put in in my travel mug, get out onto the water and it’s still too hot to drink. By then 3-4 hours might have elapsed.

The top is easy to drink out of and doesn’t burn your mouth like some other ones that don’t have a lid to drink through.

I absolutely love my vacuum thermos. I use a 1.1 Quart Stanley vacuum thermos. It can hold just shy of 8 cups of coffee, which means when I brew coffee in the morning, I drink one cup and put the rest in the thermos for the work day, and that works really well. If I didn't drink all of my coffee during the day, it's almost always hot enough the next morning to drink and be merry.

Even better, since it's thick-ass stainless steel, it has taken a lot of massive beatings and only has a very light dent where it fell several feet and landed its bottom corner against a street curb. I have more growlers than I can count (both 64 oz and 32 oz) so I always do that for parties, homebrew club meetings etc. I recommend getting the swing top ones that are insulated. The Stanley growlers are fantastic. You can fill it off you're keg and it will stay cold all day.

Another option is using carbonation caps to fill 1L or 2L soda bottles. If you hit it with CO2 it will stay good for at least a few weeks without opening. I drink a ton of seltzer water so I always have 1L plastic bottles around.

I can give you some numbers on this. Before a getting a flask I had spent around $15/year on energy for boiling water for tea/coffee. With a thermos it was $5/year. This doesn't sound like much. Energy is cheap when civilization is functioning normally. But if you need to forage for wood every day or have limited propane stockpiles or only a couple of solar panels then it really makes a difference.

The stainless thermoses work pretty good. They'll easily keep a beverage hot for 12 hours. You are supposed to preheat the steel flasks but I will skip that because boiling water is too hot for tea. The water is cooled just enough to be right where I want it.

The stainless thermoses are much nicer to carry around in a backpack. I have several of them and recommend this model. Anything smaller than 3 cups is not worth bothering with.

This is the one I have and like I said, the white plastic mouthpiece pops out for cleaning and the sillicon stopper can be pulled off to clean as well. Cleaning is very easy with this and I really like it.

I felt like both would be excellent on insulation, was more concerned about the mouth spout disassembly and cleaning when the Hydroflask is nice, simple flip top. I had a 'modern' Stanley coffee flask that had a complicated mouth spout that was a pure pain to clean.

But glad to hear the Zoji isn't so bad.

I think part of the issue here is you are having five or six coffees per day...That's pretty intense. Any reason in particular you have to swig so much?

Also, why not try black coffee? I hated it at first, but now I prefer it to anything else - I drink it daily. Many water bottles have intricate lid mechanisms that are notorious for getting grimy. Some base units have very narrow openings that make cleaning the interior virtually impossible.

Ideally you want to be able to deconstruct the entire lid for cleaning and have an opening big enough to fit your hand or a decent bottle brush.

The interpretation of the law used to be that breweries could only fill growlers bought on site, but was clarified within the last couple years to allow for non-brewery/generic growler filling.

The only catch is that the growler can't have any other markings on it. I've got a couple of these, and had one place simply put tape over the logo, just to be safe. I've since replaced that with black electrical tape that stays on all the time.

Having said all of that, and while I haven't had issues at any of the bay area breweries, it's apparently still within the rights of the brewer to refuse filling growlers other than their own... I ran into this issue with Pizza Port, after leaving their growlers (I have two of those as well) back in SF, and instead tried to use my stainless ones.

I wish each brewery listed whether generic growlers were welcome or not. Might have to start a list, and try to persuade the ones who don't.

I've had a Zojirushi travel mug for over a year (slightly different model). Been very happy with it. I chuck it in my bag filled with tea on the commute to work, and it does not leak. Once I didn't drink my tea all day at work, and the following day when I went to empty it out, the liquid was still hot. Also the design is gorgeous, if you care about that.

I love this guy. I accidentally left him on the top of my car, took off and and he flew right off! A few scratches and a bump I undid with a hammer but he's still sexy. Also, these vacuum guys almost work too well. After years of getting used to Newton's Law of Cooling, I'm always surprised when my coffee maintains its temperature.

I use zojirushi for my iced coffee and my cold brew. The ice melts in my iced coffee because the coffee isn't really cold because it's not refrigerated(I do a pour over on ice, which melts all the ice). So I add 2-3 cubes of ice and it melts and doesn't really dilute it much.

As for cold brew, I'll dilute it with some water, add a few cubes of ice, and I'm good with delicious cold coffee. It's pretty tough, you only need one hand to handle it as the top pops open and stays open, and it doesn't sweat at all. Pretty easy to clean, too.

I know you want cold coffee, but if you ever use hot in this thing, it'll keep hot for 6+ hours. I don't know how long it will actually stay hot, as I'm usually done before 3 hours. But I forgot about my coffee once and it was hot after 6 hours of just sitting there.

Like, I usually have to lower the temp of my tea when I use it or else I can't drink it for the first two hours at all and have to leave the lid off until it cools down.

A mug by this company is ideal for soups, coffee, even stews if you bring a bowl to pour it in. I have had coffee scalding my mouth 14 hours later. I often have to open it, let the contents cool and then consume because it retains heat so well.

I've bought them at walmart and ROSS (cheapest there, though the color selection was limited). Between my wife and I we have like 6 of them. They go to work with us, stay in cars, go to the gym, go around the house, etc. They work amazingly well, and I've never had one break (even when dropped onto cement/tile). I use a french press and sediment is totally fine by me. What I didn't like is that it basically took away all the convenience of using the Keurig. I used it a couple times and switched to just brewing it at home and bringing it to work in a thermos. Well... Technically it's a Zojirushi.

If you're okay spending ~10 minutes getting it in the machine and whatnot then cleaning it out then it's a pretty good investment. It does make good coffee. It's just a bit more work than I expected.

I really like these Stanley insulated growlers and they keep things hot/cold for 24 hours. When I've camped I usually use them to fill up with water and it's so refreshing to drink that I actually stay hydrated. Warm water in the heat is kinda gross. They're also great if you go to microbreweries. You can find some cheaper ones but this one has a nice handle and an easy open/close lid

I've gone through maybe a dozen travel mugs (including the Contigo) and settled on this.

It's not cheap, per se. But it's an incredible value because it's vastly superior:

• When closed, it's completely leak-proof.
  
• It will keep your coffee hot for 5+ hours. And drinkably warm for 10+ hours.
  
• Unlike the Contigo, there's a basin that the coffee flows into before you take a drink. This allows you to control the flow rate. (It's difficult to sip from the Contigo.) This is important b/c your coffee will remain hot for 5+ hours.
  
• It's easy to clean. (The Contigo's cap is complicated b/c of the auto-seal mechanism, which makes it hard to clean.)
  
• I've owned mine for 8 years and have never had mold or needed to replace the gasket.

I'm a huuuuge fan of bento canisters like this and this. If you refrigerate containers overnight (or prime them with hot water before adding hot foods), they'll stay good for hours. Plus it's kind of comforting to have all your food sectioned out. :)

I find that two smaller high quality thermoses work better than one large one. When a large one is half full, it seems to lose heat more quickly. I’ve found the Zojirushi insulated bottles to be amazing, and I prefer the 12 oz size, though the larger ones are great as well.

I use a Thermos Sipp Tumbler almost daily and it has done magnificently. The lid assembly can be tricky if you ever take it apart, just make sure everything is reassembled correctly. Aside from that, it has never leaked, despite being tossed in my backpack or rolling around on the floor in my car. Excellent travel thermos.

Counter strike is great for workouts. Play a round, die, start working out, spawn, repeat. If your planning to stick to a workout, I suggest looking into things that will up convenience. I use a Thermos and it's helped my eating habits loads. I like doing soup, but hot or cold, the thermos is handy. As for in home workouts, a couple kettlebells(a 15lb and 25lb is a good start) and a door gym will get you far. For motivation I like to quantify results. Nothing better than thinking of an alteration to workouts or the diet, committing to a couple weeks, then having the idea empirically tested. I found that I have trouble with motivation when I don't know for sure that things are working.

Nissan travel mugs are the best. THE BEST. I've used two different ones, and they have both astounded me. My coffee will sit in a cold winter car for 24 hours, and still be warm. Not even close to hot, mind you, but warm to the tongue. It literally defies reason.

Not a clothing item, but I would recommend getting a vacuum thermos bottle. I've used a thermos before. The only problem is that too hot coffee stays too hot for too long. Once it reaches the right temperature, it'll hold for long enough, but a burnt tongue squanders all that.

Honestly, it'll taste fine. I wouldn't worry too much about degradation. Most coffee shops have pre-made coffee sitting in urns for hours (the name of the one we use where I work is escaping me). Coffee'll stay hot for quite some time, and any impact on taste is minimal.

I have the Zojirushi SM-KHE48BA. It might be a good idea to pair it with a little mug. The spout area on mine is pretty dirty, and none of my attempts at cleaning it have worked out.

Modern MRE bags will have a bag that you add water to and a chemical pouch it has and it heats the food pouch. You dont want to drink that water but you could possibly have a water pouch that gets heated instead of the food pouch.

A bit convoluted to get hot water but...its possible.

A pack stove is what you're looking for. They run on solid, liquid, or gas fuel and span a wide range of prices. Jetboil is a popular but pricey brand with many models. This means you will be carrying the stove, the fuel, and another container for the water.

If you're talking about a day hike then your best option is to get a good thermos just fill it up before you leave. It will be a lot less hassle, weigh less, and take up less space.

You can get a good insulated container (appropriately sized for your needs) and transfer the coffee from the Chemex to the insulated vessel. I essentially do the same thing everyday to bring my coffee to work (but in a smaller insulated zoijurishi).

This guy has been my trusty companion for the last few years in grad school and I love it. All the gaskets come apart for easy cleaning. I've never thrown it into a bag while full, but it keeps a really good seal and you can shake it all around without any leaks.

I used these for ~5-6 years each. I ended up breaking them/dropping them one too many times so I threw them out to try the new "style" the bottle itself wasn't as durable and the style was too clunky. I prefer minimalist looks.

This is the travel mug that I have, and I'm absolutely in love with it. You do have to press to open it, but can leave the lid opened as long as you want. I've had it for nearly a year, and it seriously has never leaked... which is an important feature if you like to throw your travel mug in a bag. Plus, it keeps coffee hot for a really long time; if I don't finish all of my coffee in the morning, what's left is still warm when I get home in the evening.

Just a PSA, I have a zojirushi that I bought amidst the hype, and it's great. I also have one of these that I got on sale a couple years for $16. It works just as well as the Zojirushi and at this point, has less scratching on it despite being older. I see this thermos on sale quite often (and most stores, when not on sale, sell it for about $25, which is about equal to the LOWEST the zojirushi has ever been).

I'm not saying the Zojirushi is over-hyped, because it absolutely lives up to expectations. The thing is, it's just an insulated thermos. There's no new space age technology inside or some high tech manufacturing process that makes it leagues better than competitors. It's just a solid thermos that (usually) costs way too much.

tl;dr- This is on sale, that's cool. Other products work just as well and generally cost less.

For non insulated, just use a 4L milk jug.
For insulated, a large thermos from Stanley or Thermos or Yeti is your best bet. I'm always most impressed by the green matte stanleys. These guys or similar.

Zojirushi. This is definitely what you want. There Bento Boxes are also awesome. Nothing compares to vacuum insultation except maybe aerogels. And I haven't seen those in thermoses yet.

They're much better than a drip machine. Get a carafe to keep the coffee hot if you make more than 1 cup. I have a Nissan Steel vacuum travel mug and it's the best!

I actually have two. One is strictly for coffee. The other for tea or water. While they're not particularly difficult to clean, I don't like my tea tasting like coffee.

My favorite zojirushi vacuum flask I have is amazing and has not chipped yet despite many drops on pavement (linked below, I got cinnamon gold color). I have also had good luck with my hydroflask (bright red) and clean kanteen bottles keeping their color. A decent thermos

That's the latest one I bought. I'm pretty happy with it. Sometimes I can't eat all of what I put in there but I like being able to fill it up when I want the extra.

This one is just amazing, the water is still warm after 24 hours. I use this for the picnic and the water burns me all the time.

And, get a smaller one for the milk, thermos keeps cold as well! I use it for ice in the summer time.

I think the best option is a Nissan Thermos travel mug. The second best option is a Contigo travel mug. The reason I like the Nissan more is because it keeps my beverages hotter for much longer, it is much easier to break all the way down (taking off rubber seals and whatnot), I like drinking out of it more and the overall construction seems a bit nicer. Many people will surely tout the Contigo. I have one and it does get used, but if I were to lose it I would replace it with another Nissan Thermos travel mug.

I can vouch for this one personally. Keeps beverages insanely hot/cold forever. Used to carry 40oz of coffee or tea with me when I would dive all day (hours on hours in 50˚F water for work) and it was a godsend. It used to be stanley that held the gold in the thermos market, but apparently their QC has gone way downhill.

I've seen my friends with the little thermos brand food containers, but they're a bit heavy. Especially if you're going to be nuking the food at work, then you don't need something that will retain heat. If you're a sandwich man, any grocery store will have light plastic tupperwares for that. Otherwise, keep a bowl at work and bring stuff in plastic. If you're worried about it getting squished, bring glass or get back racks on your bicycle to increase storage space.

i got this Thermos about half a year ago. it's definitely worth the money, mine's been (literally) thrown around, it's still good, and things stay hot forever in them. i have absolutely no complaints about it. i'm really cheap but i figured it was better to spend the money on something that worked well rather than something that might break/open on me

My Zojirushi seals up nicely and will still burn my tongue after lunch. The locking lid is great.

It's almost too well insulated and the cap is very easy to clean. If I didn't already have one I'd get the 20oz model.

A terrific option is a wide mouth thermos. You'd put hot food in it and it stays hot for up to 9 hours (it also says 12 hours to keep cold stuff cold).

That gives you tons of options for all kinds of things. I googled good recipe ideas for thermos and found a bunch of ideas.

I would highly recommend a thermos brand mug. Been using this one since 2014 including throwing it in my bike commuting pack. It is spill proof, indestructible, and great insulation.

I also have a contigo and never liked the design with the push button to drink.

  Diet coke can be addictive. I was drinking it for the caffeine - but I realized how expensive it was and switched to making my own coffee/tea/iced tea in the morning and packing it in a large thermos for work. I probably saved ~ $500 doing this for the past year.

I've used the smaller 24 ounce model when I used to bring one bigger meal and drink it between breakfast/lunch. I would put a few cubes of ice and it would remain cool just fine, even on 100+ days. It helped to make sure it was left out of direct sunlight too.

I use a Thermos Sipp. Been using it for about a year. Keeps the coffee very hot and is relatively easy to clean. Because it is made out of stainless steel you don't get the nasty plastic flavor. The top is constructed of plastic but this does not seem to effect the flavor. I would recommend it.

I use this cup and my coffee almost always stays hot until I finish it. Same size (16 Oz.) but you drink right out of the thermos. It doesn't stay hot quite as long as the "thermos bottle" version, but it is long enough. It never leaks when closed, either. I carry it in my coat pocket or toss it in a bag all the time. I love mine.

Did that, too, but I found that frothing the juice up with a milk frother a few times and then putting it in my trusty old thermo bottle with 60° celsius water for some 4 to 8 hours creates some really damn good juice and consumes no power aside from boiling up a little water.

My ultrasonic gave up third time around. Seems like the cheaper ones aren't made to run for long stretches. It's probably why they're programmed to 3 or 5 minute cycles.

The bottle keeps water hot for a long time. Some of my juices take a little longer until they taste their best but it's no problem since you can just refill some boiling water to bring it back up to 60° (using a thermometer).

I like this method more than ultrasonic since it's so lo-tech. Just dump the juice in the bottle, close it up and go do whatever. No powergrid involved so there's nothing to worry about. I wouldn't wanna leave the house with an ultrasonic or crockpot running.

I purchased a Thermos Sipp a few months ago after having the regular Starbucks and grocery store travel mugs leave me wanting. The Sipp is amazing. Keeps it hot for 4-5 hours depending on if I have the vent open, and doesn't spill a drop if it is closed. Highly recommend.

I have a 32 oz camelbak, but I feel ya on the dog fur. The rubber mouthpiece is also harder to clean.

THIS 24oz Thermos water bottle has been my daily go-to for 4 years - love it. I've bought two since I dropped my first one once too many times and broke the lid (no fault of the bottle, just my clumsiness).

A kinda pricey, but totally fun option would be to pick up a fancy bento box which can keep hot and cold items hot and cold for hours and hours even when packed together! Go full on Asian with rice, kimchi, veggies, and a miso soup!

My gf and I use Thermos 16oz tumbler. I like that you can push a button with one finger to open it. It insulates well and looks nice.

Random recommendations from a sophomore in college:

Adidas Shower Shoes - These things have been great. They dry nearly instantly and are adjustable.

Zojirushi Travel Mug - If you drink coffee and would like to have access to it throughout the day, this is by far the best travel mug (and has many recommendations here on BIFL).

Water pitcher - Assuming you will have a fridge (you might not), having access to cold water can be surprisingly convenient. Even if you don't have a fridge, if you don't have a sink, this will be a lot more convenient.

Towels - This is more of a personal preference. For me, department store-bought towels are too soft and absorbent. I found that mine never got totally dry, and replaced them with Turkish peshtemal towels (like these ones from Amazon)

Computer monitor - You will use this all four years, I guarantee it. If you get a big enough one, you can also use it as a TV when friends are over.

Laser printer - do NOT buy an inkjet. You will go crazy when it conveniently runs out of ink before your lab report is due. Brother makes good laser printers. Wireless is nice, but probably not a necessity.

Some kind of noise cancelling headphones - doesn't have to be active noise canceling. College dorms can be noisy. Having a good pair of over-the-ear headphones can be nice, even if you just listen to white noise to drown out your roommate.



Things I didn't need:

A TV - nice, but not necessary

iPad - I don't know why anyone thinks this is necessary or why I have one other than watching Netflix in bed when I'm too lazy to unplug my computer.

When I was a delivery driver I just used a Thermos Food Jar I’d make all the food on Sunday and instead of individual meal packs I’d scoop out todays meal warm it up and the thermos would keep it warm till lunch.

I would have to clean the thermos every night or morning, but I figured it was worthwhile vs eating fast food.

I had a student teacher who bought me this thermos. On my life it is the single best teaching gift I've ever received. This thermos is otherworldly. It keeps all beverages piping hot for the full day and I now never have to drink room temperature coffee or tea. I once filled it and put it in the fridge overnight so I could take iced coffee to work the next day. The next morning I took a swig...and burnt my tongue. If you put chilled beverages in with ice...the ice is still in the thermos at the end of the day. It also comes with a locking cap so I never spill. It's. Just. Amazing. I didn't know a good thermos could change my life but it absolutely has!

I use this. It fits in my bottle cage, however I usually carry it in the water bottle holder of my bookbag. It is completely spill proof, so you could close it and throw it in a bag without worrying at all about spillage. It also disassembles so that you can clean every nook. And it keeps coffee warm longer than any mug I have ever used (and almost as long as a vacuum thermos). Hot coffee in the morning is still warm at the end of the day, and not quite room temp until late evening.

I just bought the champagne gold one for a few cents more. My sister loves my blue one so I'm going to give this to her.

Grandad almost certainly would have had a Stanley Vacuum Bottle. As /u/capolan notes, it would have been glass lined while today's are stainless steel, but they're otherwise pretty much unchanged from 75 years ago.

I've used many different ones including the Cointigos, Thermos and Zojirushis. I think it simply came down to this:

I work an office job and mostly drink my coffee in the AM, but might brew 3-4 cups to keep me going throughout the day. So I don't need the ultra high hours specified in some other products (20hrs hot! no no, I need maybe 5hrs-6hrs at most).

Contigo was pretty decent at this but I absolutly HATE the cleanup. Their on the go ones have sucha complicated spring system in the lid that if you leave coffee in there overnight it'll start to gunk everything up and it was a pain in the ass to clean everything 100%. I get grossed out if there's even a bit of residue left over. Zojirushi is similar, but much easier to clean and IMO if you need to drink on the go, then it is the best.

I actually daily my Thermos because it is stupid easy to clean. Bottle brush for the body, and just a regular sponge/pad for the lid. No complex openings/buttons/mechanism for gunk to build up in. It also keeps everything piping hot for 5+ hours and the built in cup is very good for coffee since you can actually smell the drink which IMO is an important part of the whole ordeal.
