So thoughts:

1. There's a significant chance you'll undergo a significant weight change over the next few years. For most, living away from home poor eating habits will catch up to you - the legendary freshman 15. I'd be hesitant on really investing more than $100 at this point in your life.
   
2. Make your own call about the color. Personally, I think black pea coats are plenty versatile; remember, you only have to match with pants and shoes (EDIT: assuming you are wearing a scarf with the coat, which personally is best). Personally, if I mostly wore lighter colored pants I go'd go for something else.
   
3. As others have noted, however, it's a fairly thin material and low % wool. If you live somewhere with really cold winters you'll need to really layer up underneath. In comparison, I had a thick, nearly 100% wool coat that was plenty warm even with just a shirt underneath.
   
4. Fit wise, no idea how this guy fits, but pea coats in general tend to run pretty huge. There's play in how an outer coat fits (compared to say a shirt or a suit coat), but make sure to try it on with just a shirt, with layers, with a suit, etc.
   
5. American Eagle has regular significant sales. If you don't need it right now, I'd wait for one.
   
6. The top button or two being button backed (aka has a button supporting on the other side) is a huge plus. Really nice/expensive peacoats should have all buttons button-backed and even less expensive coats should have at least the top. It'll dramatically help keep the buttons from falling off - a significant issue with cheaper peacoats.
   
7. Get a couple of scarfs to wear with it. Unless you are wearing a suit it'll probably look weird without one. I'd go with acrylic scarves for now, as they are dirt cheap. Acrylic scarves tend are usually thin, but very soft and warm. The downside is they leave lint all over the place, and tend to fall apart after years of use. Never, ever spend more than $20 for one (shoot for $15 or less, I've gotten ones for $5 on clearance at Kohl's). If you go for a wool/cashmere scarf, make sure it's mostly wool and doesn't contain any acrylic. You'll probably want to wear a scarf if it's cold out and you aren't wearing something collared shirt or nicer underneath (so almost always).
   
8. Speaking of lint, get yourself a lint brush. Wool attracts lots of lint.
   
9. Get a nice pair of wool gloves, as standard northface-like snow gloves will probably clash. A wool with leather grip should be functional and fit the peacoat look nicely; should be at most $30. Probably want to skip acrylic gloves, but might be a cheap holdover.
   
10. Consider getting a nice pair of leather gloves, especially if you ever plan on wearing the coat with a suit. A decent pair of cashmere lined leather gloves should run for $40 or less with sales. Macy's was selling a bunch of these for $40 recently, but you can go for less if you shop around. Make sure you get the right size, too large will look terrible and too small won't be wearable.

11. Find an authentic navy peacoat at a military surplus store. Should run you about $100, but make sure it's not an "authentic recreation" - you want the real deal.
    
12. This Nautica Peacoat is a similar priced/look/wool%/look peacoat. Fits really well though, and you can try it on at Macy's. Might get cheaper between Macy's and Amazon if you bid your time.
    
13. It's no longer on their website, but H&M was selling a shorter but otherwise similar peacoat for ~$80. Might still be stores, and it was sold in the very awesome camel color. Shorter length might be more appealing for a younger guy. The peacoat on their website is a different coat and definitely not worth $120 (40% wool).

Fleece lined tights would be a great smaller gift to give your friend. They are black and opaque, which I think would be quite suitable for professional attire aaannndd they have the warm fuzzies of a sweatshirt hugging your legs. Be sure to check the size charts of any of these products so you get her the right size.

I feel like clothes wise, she should be fine with anything she brought from California. Skirt and a suit jacket? Well, put on those fleece tights. Thermal underwear under clothes can also keep you very warm. Scarves can help with drafty environments both indoors and outdoors. A long pashmina can pretty much be used as a blanket without looking crazy.

Once it starts snowing she may want to get snow boots, so she can switch up what she's wearing on the streets vs. indoors. I love anything by Sorel, these boots are warm, waterproof, and cute!

Accessorizing and layering is the biggest part of staying warm in the winter. You could also go the mom route and get her a nice hat and gloves set so you know she's not freezing her fingers off! Hopefully I provided you with some helpful options. You're a very kind friend to do this for your friend's birthday!

That looks beautiful, I love it! I agree with isamytaken, no necklace- hair up, sparkly earrings, bracelet and a red lip. Another alternative I'm thinking is to wear something warm but still classy. You are so right, the neckline is absolutely gorgeous. However I don't know about you, but I feel that even inside these parties are typically not warm enough for spaghetti straps. If that's your case too, I was thinking that a nice shawl like this one could be a good accessory. It'd look great with your hair up and some sparkly earrings. You could accessorize it too with a pretty brooch in the middle. And also some opaque winter maternity pantyhose to warm your legs. Either way, you look stunning with this dress!

If you want to go the conservative business route, a rectangular wool or wool-blend scarf is your best bet rather than something like a blanket scarf. For colors, you can never go wrong with gray, camel, taupe, navy, black, and burgundy (probably ivory as well, but I see less of those in the business setting). I agree with the other poster that jewel tones are also great, but less traditionally business formal/conservative depending on how casual your sister's workplace is. More conservative patterns would be some variation of plaid/tartan/check/windowpane, houndstooth, or herringbone if you're not a fan of solid colors.

For lighter or more feminine scarves, you could do something like a pashmina as well. The cheap ones are usually made of acrylic rather than silk or wool/cashmere (no matter what the label says!), but I think they work well for warmth either way.

That's an example of one. Not sure where you are but in the US where I'm at, they are $15 at Target. You however could spent $150 at Nordstroms or somewhere else high end on a cashmere one. Just depends what you want.

If you are looking to stay away from cardigans but need something warm, a nice scarf/pashmina has never let me down. I've worn one to many parties and weddings and it comes in handy if sitting at the table your arms are fine but your legs are cold (yes i've used mine as a blanket on my legs before).

Maxi and/or wrap dress with a large gauzy scarf/shawl (I got this one a while ago and I like its versatility). Bonus points for tropical floral print anywhere. Nice sandals that are sand-friendly. Frye has sandals with solid construction that secure the shoe at your toe and ankle/heel, and their leather is very soft and comfortable. Fun jewelry—big geometric bright colors could work in a cool way with a muted tropical-floral print. Bangle-style bracelets, big earrings. E: a cool jumpsuit/romper could also work here if it’s your kind of thing.

For our family Christmas party, I'm wearing these in plaid, with a black long sleeved shirt that has a slight turtleneck (enough fabric to have a turtleneck, but it doesn't fold over or anything, if that makes sense!), and black flats that look like these, except they're patent leather, and have a slightly taller heel. I'm going for a very "Grace Kelley does 2018 Christmas" vibe!

My family is also going to New York City on December 8th, but I have no clue what to wear! I'm sure just the regular old sweater and boots combo, but we'll see. I also have no clue what I'm wearing for Christmas yet, either! On December 15th, I'm going to see a play in the Capital Region, and I'm planning on wearing a cape that looks like this, though without the hood, and my brown oxford pumps.

For Thanksgiving, I'm undecided, but I think I'm going for a very 1940s Ivy League vibe, so I might wear a cable knit sweater, a neck scarf, and oxfords. I have so many options, though, but I still have time!

I personally like things like shrugs or wraps for dresses. That way you have options. Too hot, take them off; too cold, wrap up but don't obscure your dress.

For a shrug, you could try something like this Ivory dealy from torrid, For a wrap, i might suggest something like this lovely pink fluffy thing.

However, if you are outdoor or expect October to take a turn for the fridged, by all means, get the jacket you want. Be comfortable!

I have a muslim friend, so I completely understand where you're coming from. Honestly, with a little bit of research you should find plenty of dresses! I found around 30 without any problem. Some may work better than others, and it really depends on what you are comfortable to spend and how modest the dress needs to be in terms of back, cleavage and shoulders. Here are my suggestions:

BHLDN's Nova dress might work. It's just available in three colors (ivory, blush, iceblue) though; and your friend might have to alter the neckline a bit (it could be too much cleavage?)?

This dress from RenzRags on Etsy has long sleeves, but they are just lace so pretty much see-through (which might work for some people, but not others). As RenzRags offers customizations, you could probably ask if they could change the material of the sleeves/add fabric if your bridesmaids want that? If you have a winter wedding this velvet dress could work, too. [note: wedditors stated that a lot of dresses needed alterations, even a custom size was ordered]

I'd keep an eye out at places that sell prom dresses. Here is a pretty silver dress/cape combo from Macy's (same price but you can probably resell the dress NWT?). A white one from ModCloth. A tiny sparkly one. And a few from Amazon 1 and 2.

I’ve seen something like this faux fur shawl used by a lot of brides, and then the brown ones used by the wedding party. There are multiple different styles and colors, as well as lengths. If it doesn’t cover up much of your dress, it might be an option, or something you could wear between pictures and still look pretty while staying warm. I personally love winter weddings, I think they’re so beautiful. If I lived in a place where there was snow, I’d totally do it!

Your dress is gorgeous! I don’t really get the beachy vibe with the dress. I think if you did a nice updo with blingy earrings and a simple necklace it would be gorgeous, you could also do a fur shrug/stole since it’ll be late winter.

The dress looks awfully short on the model - does it look less so on you? Models are usually 10 feet tall, so it may actually be perfect on a non-model sized person. Do you plan to wear that belt with it?
If you keep the belt, I would use it to guide the colour choices for the other items.
If you have warm tones, go with a yellow or orange cardigan. H&M has some for under $20 US. For cool tones, try purple like this pashmina. Coordinate (but don't necessarily match) the belt with tan, camel, cognac, or leopard print shoes.
If you don't wear the belt, you could wear gold or silver dancing shoes. These higher heeled sandals also come in both gold and silver. Pick the colour that matches your skin tone best and for which you already have coordinating jewelry.

I just had a c-section 4 weeks ago. I think the idea of slippers or a nice shawl sweater is great. She will just want to feel comfortable and anything that is easy to throw on is key.

I live in New England and would say that the weather, especially this time of year, is pretty unpredictable. Even when it's warm during the day, it cools off significantly in the evening. I'd go for a solid knee or mid-calf length dress and definitely get a wrap or shawl of sorts for the evening.

I think you should go with non maternity with loose over the belly since you say "it's not a bump of any kind" yet. 13 weeks is early for a bump anyway. You can still take "bump photos" in this by holding below your stomach and it'll be smoother since the fabric is loose.

I feel like it's better to attend in an appropriate outfit than to not show up at all. If you were to not show up then your sister can play the "Woe-is-me my sister must hate me she isn't here at my wedding, how sad for me." whereas if you show up in an appropriate outfit and she throws a fit then that is not your fault and others will see that.
