> That fix is about 1 hour of labor, can save you from a much bigger compressor replacement bill, and keep your A/C running nicely for quite a bit longer.

Ehh, it's not tremendously more expensive to just replace the whole thing actually. I agree doing just the AC compressor clutch can save you some money and time.

Here's one I found on Amazon for you AC Compressor

Also look up pep boys or whatever other auto parts stores are near you and use those part numbers in Amazon to find equal ones. I got my AC compressor for under $300 with buying through Amazon. GOOD LUCK!

i have an 03 with 139k. absolutely repair it. also there is no way it should cost that much to have it repaired. maybe at the STEALERship, but at a normal mechanic? few hundred + parts.

this compressor should fit your car. i used one in my subaru and it was just as good as OEM.

i checked alldata. looks to be around a 3-4 hour job. so you are looking at around 240 for parts and 280 for labor. thats a good 150+ less than what you were quoted.

For someone who touts using the correct tool all the time, watching that made me want to punch him. Use a piston ring compressor, piston ring tool, and a proper valve spring tool. He should also be giving up on his clean hands and put some oil on various parts of the engine while reassembling.

better option

Any of the air horn/lowrider/air suspension tanks are way better options than using a ton of little tanks

Check robot manual for rules regarding compressor, as far as I know for offboard they must be rated at a max of 1.1CFM at 12v

IIRC tank just needs to be rated to appropriate specs for pressure

best option for offboard compressor

even better option for compressor

Get a Denso on Amazon. Whole new compressor and clutch for $270.

u/tralce · 2 pointsr/s10

~145 for the part plus the cost of labor unless you're qualified to replace it yourself.

First, thanks for all the replies.

I found some Reinzosil 300SL from Victor Reinz which apparently is the "best" and "for Mercedes Benz", if you believe the advertising. Basically just 5EU for a 70ml tube, no transport since I found it on an auto service shop nearby.

Second, was this controversial somehow to ask in this community? Post got downvoted. Weird.

I don't recommend them at all as they can clog other things but if you're going to do it anyway I'd use the gm style. You can find a similar thing at the parts store (if not the exact same thing).

you should be using an impact wrench if you're not already.

edit: I'm not sure you can even just buy the pulley. It seems it comes with the compressor. link

2nd edit: I was wrong

I agree with /u/Cyfun06 and /u/johnny_cannaseed here... $800 is bullshit!

Clutch Assembly $140

New compressor $172

If the compressor fuse keeps blowing it is most likely the compressor clutch that has failed.

With a new dryer/accumulator and Freon should be under 200$ in parts

> a basic understanding of ac system principles doesn’t always equate to an understand of the complexities of the modern automobile

It's a 2005. This is the Original Equipment

To my knowledge, this unit won't throw OBD codes, maybe an AC analyzer could detect a leak, but as I said, it was holding vacuum. I've never heard of a computer that can tell you your compressor has failed. And it still doesn't change the fact that when I had my car refilled with freon and the system was pressurized, the compressor magically worked...
