I did a muffler delete with vibrant 3.5-inch dual tips.

I made a couple mistakes on this one that I should mention... they are not regrets as much as things i would have liked in hindsight to have thought about.

  • Had I to do it all over again while removing the mufflers would save me a lot of weight, I would have left them on and had cut them open and welded straight pipe inside of them. they would have mounted in the stock locations using the stock hardware, but... would give that muffler delete sound.
  • The vibrant tips i chose just barely fit in the diffuser openings and the installer had to work on it a while to get them straight and not hit the sides... this required additional attachment points and such. (see my previous statement) Had I chosen the next smaller size down for the outlets, they would have been framed better in the diffuser ports AND there would have been less labor/effort
  • I had the exhaust installed by a performance shop and not a muffler shop. just think, guys who work on exhaust all day vs guys who take their time to do a very clean specific job. I thought I wanted the latter, but I really should have chosen the former.

All this aside, I think that the muffler delete is the best E39 mod you can do. I think people that ride behind me on BMW club drives may have a differing opinion, but on the whole... (preparation H feels good) It was well worth it.

EDIT - I skipped over the part where you were cash poor. I was kind of task-driven to answer the question. Agreeing with others here, you may want to reconsider putting your money into a car when you should shore up your life a bit first.

Definitely! If you end up going that route, keep your stock exhaust in the garage or something. The straight pipe has no catalytic converter, thus may not pass an emissions test depending on laws in OK. I'm not sure how strict they are. Just put your stock back on when you get the inspections done, and switch it back out when you get home. Takes like 30 minutes tops. Links here:

Sounds like BS the welds will outlast the pipes. Flux core is a bit harder to weld that thin stuff than gas shielded, but use slip joints if you can and you will have much less chance of blowing through. This tool is the bomb for stretching tube just enough to allow the pipes to slip over each other https://www.amazon.com/Lisle-34400-Exhaust-Pipe-Stretcher/dp/B0002STSPS

I went with these because they were not chrome but https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0762361W9/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

these seem to be good too, are a bit cheaper and have better reviews.

I am a bit concerned about how close they are to the bumper, so I put a small bit of rubber in between the bumper and the exhaust tip and I'll see how it goes

Haven't been on the highway yet, but at 65, it's not bad in 6th. This is the tip: Vibrant 1333 3.5" Round Stainless Steel Dual Tip https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000E43BCQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_sp4Pyb4PFE6E2

This looks awesome, really want to try to make one when I find some time. Did you use a pipe like this? and the pipe reducer would be something like this but the correct dimensions? I have done some metal work but I know almost nothing about exhausts.

Something like this is probably just the thing you need

Find a shop that's willing to take on the job and they'll get you squared away.

You undo literally the only nut holding it on and slide it off...

Like did you even go outside and look at it? It's extremely obvious how they're held on... There's a clamp with one nut..

I think I paid around 200 for the the pipe and the install at my local exhaust mechanic. I'm sure you can get it done for less. It's not hard to do. There's different sized mandrel bend pipes you can buy but I used a 1.5" and that was the the right size for the sound I was looking for. Honestly it's the way the exhaust should have sounded from the factory if you ask me.

This is the pipe I bought:

And this is the guide I had the mechanic follow:

Hey I'm actually looking to get this done. But what do you do with the existing tips? Saw them off or?

Is it also this one https://www.amazon.com/DC-Sports-EX-1014-Resonated-Performance/dp/B003D4KA6Y

I used this on my AR exhaust. $7. I had to weld it in though. I have tinnitus so totally understand. I ended up buying EarPeace earplugs that cut out sound over dangerous DB levels but still able to hear conversations etc. They're awesome.

Your buddy is most likely driving an Accord. The civic does not have a converter there.

He will need the Converter, The pipe that goes with it and a Downstream O2 sensor that plugs into the side of the converter.

That second one the picture is wrong, If you look at the second picture it shows a Diagram of all the parts. The one you want to look at is 48727. It will bolt to the converter.
