I normally hate scales and hate having to write down / plug in my weight somewhere else but I decided it was time to start using one. Found this on amazon, barely more expensive than the bare bones ones and I LOVE it!

Super easy set up, comes with batteries and a free app where all your info is! Can sync with Apple health and Fitbit too. Automatically keeps your history and you can add more than one user. I’m sure these non-weight values aren’t perfect but it seems like a really good way to start measuring trends! It’s also a really pretty app, that’s what my measurement page looks like scrolled down a little (up top it just says my current weight again really big).

Highly recommend!

> So, to start off, I downloaded MyFitnessPal.

Excellent! I like MFP, it's working well for me even with its quirks.

> it's been awhile since I've had access to a good scale for people of my weight

You are going to need some way to measure your progress, eventually! I had a poke about amazon and they're not hugely expensive:

eatsmart scale

this one measures %bodyfat and is on sale!

%bodyfat information is hugely valuable for accurately tracking your progress and adjusting your diet.

> Excersizing has always been hard for me, I have severely flat feet, even my specially made inserts don't do much to prevent masshive pain if I'm on my feet too long

Stationary bike is your friend!

If you can, start walking second daily/daily for 10-30 minutes.

> It asked how much weight I wanted to lose a week, it recommended 1 pound. Is going with 2 pounds a week that big a deal? Do you think it'll be harder?

If you are 5'10" and 360lb+, you should eventually aim for 2lb/week. You may want to start at 1 pound a week to see what it feels like though.

> White bread, frozen things such as chicken tenders, sandwhich meat, cheese, baked chicken, hamburgers.. I used to eat other less healthy things but I've cut a lot of food out due to my chronic acid reflux, I eat a lot of bread and drink a lot of milk because they're relatively safe for me. I also tend to drink two cans of pop a day, though I'm going to try cutting those out.

You can eat, what you can eat. That said, as you lose weight, your reflux may improve.

If you are having trouble working out what to eat, just start with what you already eat, but control the quantities with calorie counting. You will want to do a few initial days of just counting what your current intake level is, so you can slowly lower your intake.

The easiest way to generate meals is to start with some good lean protein, then add some vegetables to that, and some flavouring, but don't forget that sauces count as calories!

Frozen food has the useful benefit of having very detailed nutritional information on the side of the box, and snap frozen vegetables have high nutrient value.

> How do you guys go about snacks? I usually eat something, be it some chips or something microwavable every few hours.

Chips are generally not great, but if you need them, count their calories into your budget. There's definitely a range of microwave foods out there with decent nutritional value (good amount of protein and essential fats).

> Also, what do you do at night when you're trying to sleep but it feels like you're starving?

When you get your eating right, this may be less of a problem. The right balance of proteins and fat help with satiety, whereas not having enough of those in your dinner meal may leave you hungry as you go to sleep.

> it says that I should consume no more than 2290 calories a day. I've used other calculators online though and have seen anything from 2600-2900 calories a day.

You probably have relatively little muscle mass because of your issues with your flatfeet. The main determinant of how many calories you should have is muscle mass. (%bodyfat measurements will let you determine this far more accurately though).

2300 calories per day is probably a good eventual target. However, first you need to measure how much you are currently eating, then work down from there.

> a bit of weight training.

I would suggest with working towards bodyweight squats and lunges. You may or may not be able to do a full movement with your current size, but a few partial squats are safe and will start conditioning your knees and muscles.

Also, try to get your hands on some cheap dumbbells and learning what movements you can do at home. You don't need the gym to lift weight!

Overall it sounds like you have a good attitude and an openness to learning. With patience, time and the right feedback, you can definitely achieve not only your temporary goals, but more than you thought possible!

Interesting question! I'm eager to see what "set-ups" other people are using.

  • Weight scale: Weight Watchers digital glass bathroom scale. This doesn't connect to any apps or measure anything other than weight, but that's what I wanted - just something simple and accurate.
  • Food Scale: Some generic, no name-brand $20 digital food scale. Again, nothing fancy, but it's accurate and suits my needs.
  • Fitness Tracker: Fitbit Charge HR. I love my Fitbit and right now, the level of activity that it tracks is perfect for me - steps, heart rate, and other activity (such as running, walking, whatever). I don't personally use the FitBit app to track my calorie intake, but I've heard that it's actually quite good.
  • Calorie counting: MyFitnessPal. No surprise here. I personally use and love the app (the barcode scanner is fantastic). The fact that it syncs with FitBit means that across two apps, I can basically track and monitor all of the metrics I'm currently interested in.

As I get more into running, I've been thinking about picking up a more running-focused watch - the Garmin Forerunner 235 looks pretty snazzy.

I'm a gadget nerd, so it's easy for me to get wrapped up in all of the different pieces of wearable tech/apps/whatever that are available. However, at the end of the day, the important thing to remember is that tracking calories and measuring what you're putting into your body is probably the most important thing, so whatever helps you achieve that is probably worth focusing on first.

Sounds like it's time to get a new scale. I have just a cheap one from the grocery store, but it's been consistent. Some things I'd keep in mind when buying a new scale:

  • Make sure to get one rated for your approximate weight. If you think you could be around 400 pounds at the high end, then get one that goes up to 450 or 500 so that you have some room and you're sure it's weighing your correctly.
  • Make sure you zero/tare your scale if it's the type that needs to do that. When you get a new one it should come with instructions.
  • Weigh on a level, flat surface that is not carpeted. Always weigh in the same place.
  • Weigh at the same time of day in the same/similar type clothing/level of undress.

These will help you get more consistent results. I know that it can suck to realize that you may weigh more than you thought, but the truth is that no matter what that number is it's just one measure. If the number is higher it doesn't mean you actually gained 30 pounds in 2 weeks and it doesn't change how you look in those 2 weeks. It's just a number - one measurement of your body. Besides, this is a starting point. If you're 30 pounds up, that's 30 more pounds you can celebrate having lost at the end. You can do this - no matter what the number on that scale says.

As far as type of scale, here are some options that aren't too expensive that I found on Amazon. If I was getting a new one for your weight I'd likely pick one of these: 1 2 3 4
Just read through the reviews and see what one seems like it's got the best reviews.

My defining moment was when I officially hit rock bottom years ago. Back Story: At 17, I had no idea what I wanted to do with myself. I basically quit going to school but still managed to graduate- moved out of my parents home and into my boyfriends. He was 26, did drugs, drank, and I for whatever reason thought he was so cool. Instead, he was abusive-mentally, physically-he got me into drugs, even once paid for drugs by having two of his "friends" have sex with me. After, he beat me again. I was in so deep that I was convinced there was no way out or I was going to die.

One day, he beat me so badly I laid on the kitchen floor unable to get up...get my phone... anything. My sister kept calling me that day. (I don't know why, she typically called a few times a week- but that day she kept trying.) When I didn't answer, she came looking for me. The door to the apartment wasn't locked and she showed herself in to find me half naked on the floor, crying, black and blue. She helped me up, helped me get some clothes on, and to the hospital and police station.

She literally saved my life. From that moment on, I got my act together. It was hard... I won't lie, I hated the process of going sober. Drugs helped me get through the pain and just numb myself out. Sis helped me in every way, every single day.

Now, I have an amazing job as a Vet Tech and I'm happy. I'm in an amazing relationship with an awesome boyfriend and I'm living a life I once never saw happening for myself. <3

Right now, I'd really love to have this scale. My sister and I are on new exercise regimes and I think it would come in handy. My sister has done so much for me over the last several years and I'd just like to repay her a little with small things!

I've got this one and I'm pretty happy with it. The app lets me enter and track weigh ins, and they seem super on the ball with customer support according to the reviews.

I make a point of weighing in with as much control of variables as possible (i.e. First thing after morning pee in birthday suit), and it's helped me track weekly trends pretty well I think.

u/prevail_ · 1 pointr/loseit

It is worth it to buy a scale and I would recommed buying one with the body fat information. I love my yunmai. https://www.amazon.com/Yunmai-Scale-Body-Fitness-Composition-Monitor/dp/B01C6E2YSI/

You download the app to your phone and it tells you your water percentage, bmi, muscle mass, protein, bone mass, bmr, etc. I love being able to look at all of these statistics and knowing that I have the ability to change them as well as keeping track of my weight. I also use the scale as motivation. I would also recommend getting measuring tape and taking all of your measurements and check your measurements once a month to see how you're progressing.

u/PM_ME_BOOBPIX · 1 pointr/Fitness

I have the caliper and once I got at ~15% BW was useless to me, it's probably me.

I ended up buying this scale https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B016JFG1K2/ and it's GREAT, someone in here posted a youtube review and it said that it might be inaccurate, but it's constantly inaccurate, so one can measure progression. And it's TRUE. I step on it every morning and there's little variance from day to day, not like any of the other scales that I ahve used in the past (those scales if you step on 3 times in a row you get 3 different weigths), this one you can step on 100 times in a row and you get the same measures.

Anyway, I am recording every morning my BW, BF% and MM% and I can see progress or regress.

I am happy with it.

> I’m gonna buy a body fat scale that has Bluetooth and and an app tonight

I have 2 cheap ones, if I were to buy one now I'd pick this one.

> switched to alternate day fasting 1200 calorie meals.

I've done ADF, it was tough. I think the most I did was 3 sets in a row.

> A lot of people tell me I look skinny and I’m overdoing it but I think we all know good is the enemy of great, and also, if you’re tall, you can carry / hide things well

I don't mean it in an offensive way, but for me it's hard to see how someone 6 feet 200 lbs could look "too skinny". I like using this BMI site, and putting in your stats gives a 27. I think the people around you are just so used to you looking a certain way, anything less looks weird to them. 170 puts you dead center in the normal BMI zone. You're on the right track, keep going.

> You definitely started closer to your ideal weight so I think it’s slightly different

Yeah, no one in my personal life noticed any difference, and that's because at my weight with a shirt on, it's just not noticeable.

> I’m also eating ketogenically

Are you doing it to lose weight faster?

> (I can definitely run5/6 miles if I want)

Is that how far you normally run? How often do you run? I've only recently started doing longer runs of like 8+ miles. I'm sort of in a crunch mode trying to up my mileage every week to be ready for my first marathon in November.

u/cattywhompuss · 7 pointsr/xxfitness

I decided to upgrade our scale at home and grabbed this Arboleaf scale off Amazon thinking I'd take the "smart scale" measurements with a grain of salt. I mostly just wanted a newer scale at home to track my weight first thing in the morning as I began to figure out a more accurate TDEE. Just tried it out this morning and have to say, I'm super impressed with the accuracy of the measurements! Here are my results. Highly recommend if you're looking for a new scale!

It's pricey, but I love my Withings WS30 http://www.amazon.com/Withings-Wireless-Scale-WS-30-Black/dp/B00AXYL4M6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1409563924&sr=8-2&keywords=withings+scale

It uses bluetooth to send my daily weigh ins directly to MyFitnessPal. It is really convenient, I just step on the scale and it does everything else. I love being able to track my daily weight and see the graphs and everything in MFP.

u/DeftHeathen · 2 pointsr/proED

I have this one, it's pretty reliable as long as you keep it in the same spot (if you move it frequently it can need to be recalibrated).

I use the Happy Scale app to record my weight every day, it's really good :)

u/cexshun · 1 pointr/loseit

Digital scales don't weigh you. Each of the 4 feet has a spring. The scale takes the compression of each spring and calculates how much you weight. This has inherent inaccuracies.

Posture comes into effect. Leaning a little farther back than yesterday? You'll gain weight. Leaning a little more forward? You'll lose weight. Move the scale and weigh yourself? Well, the scale is now uncalibrated and your weight will be off.

For a cheap digital scale, this is the best method. If you are moving the scale, let it sit for 30 seconds to calibrate. Now, place 1 foot on the scale so it begins to register a weight. Remove your foot before it "locks the weight in". Does the scale return to 0? If not, it's not calibrate. Let it shut off, then repeat the foot test until the scale shows 0 after you remove it.

Now the scale is calibrated, step on it. Make sure your feet are in the exact same position as yesterday. Keep your nose above your toes and practice good posture. Don't stare down at the numbers, because this will throw off your posture and balance. Give the scale 5 seconds or so to do its job, now look down at the numbers. That's the most accurate reading you will get.

Even with my expensive Withings scale, I still have occasional calibration issues. But nothing like my old cheap digital that I had to weight myself 3 times every morning to try and figure out what the correct number was. And the Withings will tell me if my posture is off. It will blink at me to tell me I am leaning to far in 1 direction.

Went out for drinks last night to an awesome microbrewery not far from my house. Was good to catch up with a friend who was there too. I also think the beer slightly dehydrated me, helping me reach a min weight so far during this cut.

Also, /u/jiffener, I ordered this scale, so should have a scale update for you soon.

u/Rc2photo · 5 pointsr/loseit

First, congrats on starting your journey!

I googled a few of these and it looks like Amazon may have a good selection. Because of course Amazon has everything!

I've been using a scale: Garmin Index. I'm not convinced it's entirely accurate but it's good for tracking your progress. I have also used calipers and I'm not sure if I'm doing it right. But just as a point of comparison the scale gives a number about 3-5 points higher than callipers. The nice thing about the scale is that it automatically tracks it for you. I'm looking into doing the Bodpod to see how that compares to the other two methods.

u/xsdylas · 4 pointsr/EDAnonymous

Yeah!! Here's an example of one on Amazon: link

You are in my thoughts and prayers for sure! You can do it! Hahaha

u/Somthin_Clever · 2 pointsr/Jawbone

I'm also interested in the CubeSensors.

But I use a couple apps with my Up3.
Fitocracy app - I've been using fitocracy for a while its nice to keep tracks of lifts and routines while at the gym and provides great guides for newbies including videos. As for its intergration to Up's app it will only log a weight lifting time, and a cardio time.

Runkeeper - I don't use this one to much. Mostly to just walk the dog. I haven't used it in some time since you know, winter is a thing.

I also use Withings smart scale WS-30
Withings scale/app - this I like it provides a great, easy, quick way to keep a record of my weight that auto updates with the Up app. It will also give you a BMI but that doesn't auto log in your Up app. Also works multiple users, fitbit, android, and apple. So I can keep using it if I ever decide to switch

The travel scale I have is this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004V8EBOI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. It's basically just a small, light-weight scale that's easy to throw in a suitcase!

u/LostInThisEmptyLife · 2 pointsr/intermittentfasting

It’s a scale I got on amazon. It’s great. I mean. It’s not going to be the greatest for measuring body fat but I can keep track of my progress.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079DQ7JK6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_A497olAXdvmQz

u/dmmagic · 2 pointsr/loseit

It's a Garmin Index Smart Scale. I like how fast and accurate it is--it's way better than other electronic scales I have tried--but I also recognize that it is more expensive than the competition while providing fewer features. I often see the Withings scale be recommended as an alternative.

I have a Garmin Vivoactive 3 so I like that the scale is Garmin too; it puts all my data into one place.

u/bigdammit · 3 pointsr/keto

I got https://smile.amazon.com/RENPHO-Bluetooth-Body-Fat-Scale/dp/B01NALRONX/ which is about $30. Just another WiFi scale recommendation. I've tried a couple of others, but this one stood out at being one of the better ones (if not the best) in terms of the app and reliability:

Maybe something like this that is small enough to keep on you in a backpack or something? I think it could probably handle as much bumps as a computer would. I would trust a digital scale to handle being bumped better than an analog, tbh. But I have no science to back that up. Just gut feeling.

I use weight gurus WIFI scale. It's half the price and it has been remarkably reliable, my phone has gotten an alert every single time I have used it. It also shares info with the native HealthKit. Well worth the purchase!

u/justsomedude78 · 1 pointr/loseit

I just got this last week and like it a lot:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004NXUAXW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Supposed to measure a lot of things like bone density and fat %, but I don't put a lot of weight behind those measurements (no pun intended).

Previously I was using an old analog scale that I basically had to zero-out each time I would weigh myself and it would still give different weights each time, lol.

u/doggurlrun · 1 pointr/keto

I have a eufy smart scale that is $30 on Amazon. Clean mobile app and consistent readings.

u/Toltarius · 1 pointr/progresspics

Sure! It's the Garmin Index Smart Scale: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0178KF55E/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_OdJUDbAE151FZ

It keeps track of my weight through the Garmin app. It is kind of motivating to see the time graph on the app.

u/vSerene · 2 pointsr/Fitness

I personally use this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B016JFG1K2/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

A lot of YouTubers use it, including Alan Thrall. Here is his review on it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUBnGpe7Gd4

I use it to help me keep track of progress, and it is extremely consistent.

u/HellYaBroChrsFrmIraq · 2 pointsr/AppleWatch

I spent $25 on a Renpho smart scale and haven’t once questioned it. The scale and app feeds a boatload of data right into Apple Health which can then be shared with other fitness apps without having to think about it.

u/mariothecellist · 1 pointr/loseit

I picked this one.

4/5 stars on Amazon, but I haven't had any problems yet. Plus is looks nice for only $12.

u/mox1979 · 4 pointsr/1200isplenty

What I find interesting is that there are numerous brands that seem almost identical on Amazon. The apps are even the same.

Example: https://www.amazon.com/RENPHO-Bluetooth-Bathroom-Composition-Smartphone/dp/B01NALRONX

I personally can't stand the graph in the app, so I sync the app with a fitbit account even though I don't have a fitbit. The Fitbit account in turn can sync with trendweight.com. So automatic data entry at TrendWeight without having to spend $130 on a scale.

And I would recommend not paying attention to any of the additional data that is provided by the scale. Weight is consistent and accurate, but even the formula used for BMI seems slightly off, not to mention that there's zero chance that any of the many other data points are accurate and it would be unrealistic to expect them to be.

u/SleepyTexan · 2 pointsr/keto

> Oh and has anyone used Nokia's Body+ scale? It sounds pretty cool but like all techy stuff it costs a pretty penny...!

I have no experience with the Nokia but it seems kind of mediocre for the price, I own this basic one while my parents own this one but if you want features I don't think you could go wrong with:

u/wander_freely · 2 pointsr/loseit

Well, you could just take your measurements in specific parts of your body and use that to track to see if you see a difference over time. Most people do that in conjunction with a scale because when the scale stagnates, people will usually still see a difference in their physical measurements and that will emotionally get them through/let them know they're still getting results. I'd recommend a scale if you can swing the cost though. I haven't used this one, but on Amazon it's $13, so maybe a good starter one?

u/schmunkel98 · 1 pointr/fasting

Scale measures body fat, water, bone density, and muscle mass. These are not 100% accurate but are close enough to help me out.

Why do you feel the numbers are off?
So I know it's not accurate to anything but to itself. But I use this: Weight Gurus Wifi Smart Connected Body Fat Scale with Large Backlit LCD (White + Stainless) (Off-white) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01IFYLAR4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_0q2PCb5R2F59M

Here is a link to the travel scale I use. Just make sure you take the battery out during travel so it doesn't get drained when you're not using it!

Thank you!

It's an Ozeri. This is the model on Amazon

I link to this one anytime someone asks about scales. I LOOVEE it and I've bought multiple for my family members. I've found it to be very consistent, has user profiles to help track your weight over time, and is a reasonable price.

Thanks for this, I'm definitely going to start today. Maybe just a new notebook in Evernote, and spend 5 minutes writing down some thoughts every day.

By the way, these wireless scales have changed my life. I just stand on them for a couple of seconds after every shower, and my weight is instantly uploaded over wifi. Then you can look at a graph on their website or mobile app.
I've tried tracking my weight with pen and paper, but I've always given up after a few weeks. Now it's just effortless.

I just have a basic weight watchers glass scale. Easy to use, but doesn't have anything fancy.

u/n3xtday1 · 6 pointsr/loseit

I use this $24 scale that automatically connects to my phone via bluetooth when I step on it and automatically inputs my weight and a number of "body composition" measurements. If you're not in the app when you do it, it will store the data and sync it the next time you step on it with the app open. I've had it over a year, replaced the batteries once and never had a problem with it. I actually can't believe it does all that for the price.

I was almost exactly where you are at a couple months ago. I had started to eat at a deficit but had no idea what my actual weight was since my scale only went to 400. A couple weeks into it I got weighed at the doctor's office and was right at 440. After doing some research I found this on Amazon. Bought it and haven't looked back. I was at 406 this morning.... It may seem like it is taking forever, but just stick with it.

u/alleycatbiker · 1 pointr/loseit

I stepped on the scale this morning 4 times, and got 4 different results (varying ~5lbs from the lowest to the highest). I usually step on it twice just to make sure and it usually gives me the same number twice. Today was the first time it got crazy like that. Could it be malfunctioning? Most scales should have a reset feature for when it's moved, if you HAVE to put it away I'd look for a scale that does this. My scale allows me to move it, reset it and then weigh with less than .2lb changes.

Yes it is

Unless that’s a different one, I guess it’s a different brand.
My fault.

I had the aria scales and I hated them...

Absolutely worthless to me. It was so inaccurate for everything, and the whole wifi setup was horrible. We had one, then it died on us for some reason and we got another one cos my husband liked it. The second one we set up and it worked (?) for a few months. Then it too just up and died...tho it was in its death throes and my cat walked across it and it shattered :( At least no glass everywhere but never again will we get another one of the arias.

We got this one https://www.amazon.com/Weight-Watchers-Scales-Conair-Digital/dp/B000OCLW3S at Costco and it works great. Very simple, very nice looking and it does the job.

The first answer is: search the sub, this has come up many times. But since I've had some new ideas recently I'll respond in a little more detail here:

I just ordered a mini travel bathroom scale – let's see how that works out. Just having some warning if my weight is creeping up is important. (I was actually considering a hunting/fishing scale like this because it's smaller and probably more durable, but the process of actually weighing myself on it would be ... interesting)

I also bring quality, light-weight running shoes (I like [these] (https://www.amazon.com/ON-90000-Mens-Cloud/dp/B015CR9XJ4) ) everywhere I go. I am not a runner, honestly I fucking hate running, but it's a form of cardio you can do in most places. (If you can jump rope, that would probably be even more flexible, but I lack that skill.)

I go back and forth on calisthenics, but it's at the very least a useful stopgap. I personally think the r/bodyweightfitness routine is sort of overkill – if I'm just using it as a stopgap, pull/push/stepups and leg raises are plenty for me anyway.

not sure why you are being downvoted, it seems significantly cheaper there

u/ifIdiebeforeIbake · 1 pointr/Fitness

They're $146 on Amazon now, though thr bodufat measurement is kinda bullshit (i.e. totally inaccurate and not all that useful), so I'd go with the cheaper model http://www.amazon.com/Withings-Wireless-Scale-WS-30-Black/dp/B00AXYL4M6/ - or maybe even one of the $25 bluetooth variants that works with a smartphone.

I prefer a wifi one, though - not having to dig out your phone puts less resistance in the way of using it, at times you're not all that inclined to. But you can do it with a normal scale and the MFP website, if cost is an issue.

u/sruckus · 1 pointr/Fitness

I have this scale and it's frustrating. Says I am 9.6%, when Bod Pod had me at 20% (and that seems accurate based on my stomach). It's consistent, but so dumb because I know how glaringly inaccurate it is...50%!

Do you think it's probably just because my lower body is more lean (hold lots of weight in stomach) or the scale just sucks for me and another BIA scale would be more accurate?
