I have 3x ASUS VE248s, they cost me $200 a piece. 24" each, 1080P, and the picture quality is excellent. They also look beautiful. LED-backlit, no ghosting, etc. I think they even have built-in speakers, but I don't use them. I'd very, very highly recommend these.

By the way, you will need 2x ACTIVE DVI to Mini DisplayPort adapters. The "ACTIVE" is emphasized because plain passive adapters will not work. For example, the white Apple DVI to Mini DisplayPort adapter is passive, and so is practically every other adapter that does not explicitly say "Active" in the description. Better yet, if the description includes "Eyefinity," then you know it will be compatible, e.g. "EYEFINITY Mini DisplayPort to Single Link-DVI adapter."

This goes for monitor brand/model you buy; one will be connected with DVI, and the other two with the active mini displayport adapters. Here is an example of an "active" adapter you can buy:

http://www.amazon.com/HIS-HMDPSDVIEYE-Mini-DisplayPort-Adapter-Eyefinity-ready/dp/tech-data/B004RFGK30/ref=de_a_smtd

or, if you prefer Newegg:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814999033

You can also do what I did and use HDMI for one of the monitors since the ASUS monitor model I listed above supports HDMI input. This will save you $20 since you'll only have to purchase one Active/Eyefinity-capable adapter, but the downside is that you'll have to disable scaling in your Catalyst Command Center (a 1-minute task -- you literally drag a slider from the default "15%" to "0%" and everything works perfectly). I have 1 monitor connected with DVI, one with HDMI, and the last with an Active Mini DisplayPort adapter. With this configuration, you can add a fourth monitor (1x DVI, 1x HDMI, 2x active DisplayPort to DVI) if you'd like, but this is unnecessary for most purposes.

Hope this helped. Again, I'd put my balls on the line for the VE248's, I spend 8+ hours per day staring at these guys and I wouldn't replace them with anything else.

Send me a message if you'd like any more help with this.

Edit: One thing I wanted to add: The main advantage of a triple-monitor setup, in my opinion, is the extra productivity. I can have a .PDF open on one side screen with two-page scrolling, MATLAB/Excel/Etc. open on the other side, and a web browser on the middle screen.

That is to say, I feel triple-screen gaming is more novelty value than anything else. It's something I show friends, but disable when I actually play a game (rather than when I'm trying to showcase it).

First, most games don't natively support or aren't optimized for triple-screen setups; single-screen gaming probably accounts for over 99.9% of a developer's audience (I'd say fewer than 1/1000 gamers have a triple-screen setup), so why would they bother investing significant time into optimizing the game for the extra-high-resolution and extra-widescreen formats that triple-screen gaming requires? You'll likely get some UI stretching or other issues in most games. In Skyrim, for example, it is impossible to read in-game books or properly access the inventory on a triple-monitor setup (without some mods that break other things), since the whole user interface gets stretched across all 3 displays, and only a few lines of text/inventory are visible.

Second, the performance hit is huge. Since your video card(s) must render 3x the resolution of a single screen, assuming that there are no other bottlenecks, your triple-screen framerate will be at best 1/3rd of the single-screen rate. This means a very playable/fluid 70 FPS drops to an unplayable 23 FPS. Calculated the other way, to get 60 FPS on the triple-screen resolution, the game would need to be able to run at 180+ FPS on a single screen. Unless we're talking WoW and Flight Simulator, this means that most "amazing-graphics" games will need to be set to run on Low or Medium settings. Also, when you consider that the added screens do not simply necessitate more pixels to be rendered, but also more geometry & textures to be loaded (for the objects in the extra monitors' fields of view), you start to see how this "1/3rd" metric is truly a best case scenario, and that real-world FPS will be somewhat lower than this. So expect 100 FPS on the single-monitor resolution to drop to ~25 FPS when you activate the two extra screens. Also, from personal experience, games sporadically bog down (brief span of plummeting framerates, typically when a lot of new geometry + textures must be loaded at once) far more often when they're running across all three monitors.

Third, first-person-view games (FPS, etc.) will basically act as fisheye-lens simulators on the side monitors. This happens to a slightly lesser extent in third-person games, but is still existent (in GTA IV, for example, cars become almost comically elongated as they reach the outer edges of the side screens.

With Battlefield 3, I could play on High/Ultra on one screen at 1080P without any issues (~50-70 FPS), but across all 3 screens at 5760 x 1080, even Low settings produced a stuttery 20 FPS, often briefly dropping to 10-15 FPS if I quickly changed my field of view and new visual elements had to be loaded. My modded GTA IV (ENB series with SSAO & HDR, car mods, motion blur, etc.) ran great on one screen, giving me a fluid experience of 50+ FPS with the settings cranked quite high. When I tried to play across all 3 screens, I had to turn off all the mods and turn most of the in-game settings down to Low or Medium in order for the game to be even slightly playable. Since you're greatly expanding the field of view, so many more character models + cars + effects must be rendered, thus once again dropping framerates lower than the "best case" 1/3 value. I did have some success with some games like Saints Row 3, which scaled surprisingly well across 3 screens, but this is also likely due to the fact that the game runs very quickly even when the highest graphics settings are enabled.

Basically, think hard about whether you want to spend $400 on an extra pair of monitors if they're going to be used only for triple-screen gaming. Even on my 3x 24" setup (where the screens occupy my entire field of view), the cool-factor fades after a few days, and I find myself playing all my games with a single screen, even those that have decent triple-screen support. For gaming alone, I would much, much rather have a single 26" monitor @ 1440P than to have 3 separate screens.

u/ottosunday · 3 pointsr/Monitors

I always reccommend the QNIX QX-2710. since it's the most budget friendly and is just as good as other Korean 1440p monitors with the added bonus of being overclockable

  • $275-$300

  • 1440p
  • PLS Panel (Samsungs equivalent of IPS)
  • 27"
    *Overclockable up to 120hz

(usually reaches around the 90's on average)

What video outputs does your GTX 590 Have?

For the desktop you'll likely be able to keep all 3 monitors hooked up, you just need to make sure that the 1440p monitor is connected using Dual Link DVI which your card may have and if not you can do through some variant of display port adapter like a DP or Mini-DP to DL-DVI adapter and you can use the remaining video output for the 2x 1080p monitors

For the Macbook pro you can do the same thing, just use one mini display port adapter to DL-DVI, and another adapter to one of the video inputs that the peripheral 1080p monitor accepts and you can use the HDMI for the 3rd monitor using the second 1080p one you own.

I have successfully used the following 3' and 10' passive DisplayPort extensions:

StarTech.com 3 ft / 91 cm 20 pin DP DisplayPort Extension Panel Mount Cable - DisplayPort to DisplayPort - Male to Female:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003YKX6JK

Cable Matters DisplayPort to DisplayPort Extension Cable (DP to DP Extension Cable) 10 Feet

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00L1K1KDE

Note: I have occasionally observed static/sparkles in the video feed when using the 10 foot extension. Since the Rift S cable is 16 feet, adding another 10 feet seems to be on the verge of the limit for what we can do with passive extensions.

The following did NOT work:

StarTech.com DisplayPort Cable - 30 ft / 10m - Active - 4K DisplayPort to DisplayPort Cable - DP Cable - Active DisplayPort Cable

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IFZN2O8

I connected this directly between my 1080ti and the Rift S. I had to use a female-female DP adapter.

The Oculus software showed the DP was connected, but the screen was totally blank/dead - nothing at all.

I did test the 30' active extension and female-female adapter with a 1080p LCD monitor and it was working fine, but no go for the Rift S. Either it can't handle the bandwidth, or something about this cable (perhaps the fact that is a unidirectional cable) prevents it from working it with the Rift S.

The StarTech was the only active DisplayPort extension I could find -- if anybody has experience with any others, please comment!

The following is an excerpt from Stack exchange. I cannot confirm if this works, but it might be worth looking into for you.

User - Tohster
Apple's specs show that the late-2014 (which is still being sold today, October 2015) Mac Mini can support up to two displays using its HDMI and thunderbolt ports.
I've confirmed this by trying to plug in 3 monitors directly into the ports on the Mac Mini (two via thunderbolt, 1 via HDMI), with the same results as the OP...one of the monitors is not driven.

The following 3-monitor setup worked for me:

  • Late 2014 Mac Mini with 8GB RAM (purchased Oct 2015)
  • 3 monitors, each with 1920x1200 resolution
  • Monitor 1: driven by Mac mini HDMI port (HDMI-to-HDMI cable)
  • Monitor 2: driven by Mac Mini thunderbolt port (I used this thunderbolt-to-DVI cable)
  • Monitor 3: driven via USB 3.0 adapter (I used this one from CableMatters and have had zero issues with flicker/performance, although I am not trying to play games or watch video on it...I use it for work).

    Some notes:

  • You can use a different USB adapter (there are several on the market) but make sure that it's Mac compatible. I previously tried one that had "beta" Mac support and it was terrible.
  • Thunderbolt-to-HDMI and Thunderbolt-to-DVI cables are really mini-displayport to DVI/HDMI cables....the Thunderbolt ports accept mini-displayport connectors.
  • For the two natively driven monitors (#1 and #2 above) you can use any combination of HDMI<->HDMI/DVI or thunderbolt<->HDMI/DVI cables depending on what your monitor accepts.

That's pretty good actually given it already has the quad core i7 chip if you factor in the cost to upgrade to one plus it comes with a charger and the FHD TN panel. To clarify though it doesn't have a Thunderbolt port as mentioned in the 'about/info' section, what that is is a miniature DisplayPort or mini-DP which look similar. But yea that's a pretty good price and the seller looks safe.

Edit/Add* For systems with mini-DP you'll wanna grab one of these cables here which work wonders (I use one with my T430):

Yes I have a 5850 with the same set up you desire. I have 2 22 DVI monitors and 1 19 inch monitor running on a vga cable with this adapter

It looks like you will want this DVI one.

Or this VGA one.

I know there used to be an issue with the power and the only way to get an active was to go VGA but from the descriptions I just read it looks like the DVI one should be just fine. Double check but either of those two products is what you need. I have an accell and I highly recommend it.

Latest generation Intel Haswell i5 CPU, motherboard with a lot of features @ a good price, 8GB and a 1TB HDD. The GTX 770 is a really fast graphics card- it should play most games on High-Ultra with 2x AA no problem. The monitor has great specs (1080p, 2ms response time etc.), only lacks HDMI so you might want to pick this up. I have the same keyboard and for 18 pounds you can't complain. Everything else is pretty standard.

Any questions?

22" 1080p monitor. $140. I use it. Looks awesome. Clicky.

EDIT: If you get this monitor, I'd recommend getting one of these as well as one of these.

This is the exact setup I use on my 13" Mid-2012 MacBook, and it works great.

u/psimwork · 2 pointsr/buildapc

That's pretty much it. If one plans to use displayport, it's uncommon that they come with monitors, even the adaptive sync types that require it.

I mean, I suppose if you were putting more than two SATA devices, you might need more than the two that are usually included in the motherboard box.

Fans are something that is worth considering. It drives me insane when I see folks putting like another 5 fans in their case just to fill the fan ports, but a lot of cases only come with one (or two). I like 2x intake and 1x exhaust fan, so I will sometimes recommend that.

That's pretty much it.

Edit:

> I didn't account for the 25 dollar DVI cable

25?! Damn! Shoulda gone back to Amazon!

u/maximilious · 1 pointr/pchelp

Okay, look at my setup here:

The first photo is a picture of a DVI to Displayport adapter see this link for product specifications from amazon and if you want to buy:

https://www.amazon.ca/StarTech-com-DisplayPort-DVI-Adapter-Passive/dp/B0035PS57C

the second photo is a picture of a cable that doesnt have an adapter, as its built in the cable itself. A Male-To-Male DVI to HDMI cable. Makes things easier not having to deal with adapters:

https://www.amazon.ca/DVI-HDMI-Cable-10-ft/dp/B000V1PB02

Just remember that there are limitations everytime you change the "default" output / inputs of your monitors if you don't use the ones intended for. For example, the DVI to displayport only allows resolution up to 1980x1080 (the one I purchased at least) I am sure there are other ones which better resolutions but the price you pay also will go up.

If you dont care about resolutions, etc then pick either one ;)

Good luck

Looking to finish up my build in the next couple of days with a video card purchase. Few questions first.

  1. I was looking at either an RX 470 or 480, since my current monitor isn't that great and I'd like to have the option to get a freesync monitor eventually. The cheapest European options I've found (shipping inclusive are) the MSI 470 Gaming and Sapphire Nitro+ 480 4GB. Leaning towards the 480 for price/performance considering I can't find any sub-200 470 cards. Any reason not to pull the trigger on that one?

  2. I currently only have one case fan (exhaust), but would like to add at least one intake. MOBO on has one case fan header. I take it this is a simple as buying a splitter and another 120 mm PWM fan? How many fans could realistically be run from one header?

  3. Getting back to my monitor, it's VGA only. Totally not in the cards to replace it right now. Any recommendations on an active DVI-D to VGA adapter? Found this, for instance.

  4. I've heard that you don't currently need to buy a license to run Windows 10 -- that it just has a nag watermark and you can't change some cosmetic stuff. Really?
u/vrgamingio · 1 pointr/oculus

I have the same setup and to prepare I bought a Mini DisplayPort to DVI-D active adapter for the 3rd monitor so I could free up one of the DVI-D ports. Make sure to understand the difference between active and non-active adapters. Depending on your graphics card limits you may need the active adapter which actual converts the signal and does cost more, but otherwise your monitor will not receive signal. Here's the one I got and works perfect.

u/morchel2k · 1 pointr/buildapc

the 1030 only supports dvi-d, which no longer outputs the analog signal needed for vga. Either you get a other card that supports dvi-i (analog and digital pins), or you buy a hdmi to vga adapter https://www.amazon.com/VicTsing-Gold-Plated-Converter-Adapter-Desktop/dp/B016HL4CAY/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1506186223&sr=1-3&keywords=hdmi+vga
a active dvi-d to vga adapter would also work and keep your hdmi port free, if you want to connetc a tv or a new second monitor:
https://www.amazon.com/CableDeconn-Active-FeMale-Adapter-Converter/dp/B01DW2BJWU/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1506186440&sr=1-3&keywords=dvi-d+vga

u/SoylentRox · 1 pointr/graphicscard

I think so. Are they DP++? That means that at the electronics level they actually are capable of producing the signals in the DVI format. If so you can just use a passive adapter like this one, and it will work perfectly with no drawbacks or added latency whatsoever.

https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-DisplayPort-Video-Adapter-Converter/dp/B0017K6BD2

u/Suraj-Sun · 1 pointr/24hoursupport

Just as Streichholzschachtel said you would need active DisplayPort adapter.

Just a few hours ago, I replied the following on a similar thread, which could help you pick adapter if you decides to get one:

A while back, on a multi-monitor setup, I've used this HIS Mini-DisplayPort to DVI Adapter AMD Eyefinity-ready and it worked flawlessly right out of the box(at first i tried this Accell B087B-006B UltraAV Mini DisplayPort to DVI-D Single-Link Active Adapter ATI Certified, which did not work, even though it was ATI certified).

u/h0nki · 1 pointr/wacom

Thanks for your comment.

The cintiq arrived today. Yes, the WACOM LINK ADAPTER is not necessary. Until yet we just get it to Work with 2560x1440@60Hz via DP/HDMI.

We tried this cable, which should support 4K:
Lenovo 0B47091 Mini-Display Port to Display Port Cable
https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-Mini-DisplayPort-Kabel-schwarz/dp/B008XTW666/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1542629556&sr=8-3-fkmr1&keywords=lenovo+displayport+4k

The standard HDMI Cable from WACOM also seems to go to 2560x1440px@60Hz.

u/AlexMathieu · 2 pointsr/RiL

That sounds promising. Ok, I just need one active adapter? Also, the adapter has to be ATI certified correct? I've found this one: adapter

When setting it up, does it matter which monitor is used with the miniDP?

u/BmanUltima · 2 pointsr/buildapc

Yes, but this is an active adapter which converts the signal from digital to analog.

It's the adapters like this that don't work:
https://www.amazon.com/Kingwin-DVI-D-Female-Adapter-ADP-04A/dp/B009MPB2M4/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1480525063&sr=8-5&keywords=dvi-d+to+vga

u/squngy · 1 pointr/Pimax

5m cable is probably a lot cheaper, you would still need to add money, I'm pretty sure. ( 10m would need to be active )

Check these prices for instance
https://www.amazon.com/DisplayPort-Cable-30-10m-Active/dp/B00IFZN2O8

u/Ayit_Sevi · 1 pointr/techsupport

>I understood that I need an active adaptor(DVI-display port) but this is all over my head (which type, which-where).

So, you can only connect two monitors that aren't using DP at a time. You can try to use something like this though I'm not sure if it will work or not. Does your computer have integrated graphics? You could always do something like what I did and drive two monitors off the graphics card and the third one off the onboard graphics.

u/5_DOLLAR_DIARRHEA · 3 pointsr/buildapc

I think the issue is your 1060 has a DVI-D (Digital only) output and the adapter you bought is a DVI-I adapter (Digital + Analog). I believe you need an Active DVI-D to VGA adapter, something like: www.amazon.co.uk/Active-DVI-D-Adapter-Benfei-Female/dp/B07D3XZ9SD/

I hope someone with more experience can confirm or correct me.

u/randomlaptoptree · 2 pointsr/techsupport

Active DVI-D to VGA Adapter, Benfei DVI-D 24+1 to VGA Male to Female Adapter https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07D3XZ9SD/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_ePEXDb9B4JZ68

You'll need something like this. I assume your monitor is vga. Analog going to dvi digital. You'll need an active convert.

u/masterfulExit · 1 pointr/MacOSBeta

They're actually connected through a mini displayport KVM. The MacBook is just using the cable that comes from the KVM. I tried to do that with the hackintosh via a mini to regular displayport adapter but that didn't work.

I ended up buying this miniDP to DP cable which works great.

u/A_Nice_Meat_Sauce · 1 pointr/nvidia

That's what I was afraid of...so I guess one of these?

I've read a whole bunch of stuff on active vs passive and there were plenty of reviews for that cable saying it worked for people -- can you please ELI5 why I need an active cable?

Edit: Just saw your link. I was looking for one with a male connection on the DVI side but I suppose it'll work fine if I then use a regular DVI cable as an intermediary

u/vc212 · 1 pointr/techsupport

https://www.amazon.ca/Adapter-GANA-Converter-Supporting-displays/dp/B06XFR74K2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1501776953&sr=8-1&keywords=dvi+to+vga+active

Would that work for what I'm intending to do? I'm a little confused as it shows a picture of how it works and it makes no sense to me to be honest. The only active dvi to vga I can find in local shops are like $80 and this one is $12 so I'm a little hesitant.

Thanks in advance

u/ironfixxxer · 1 pointr/buildapc

You can use an adapter.

If you want to use the DVI-D connection you need a special cable like this one.

You can not use an adapter like this because the DVI-D port on your graphics card has a digital signal only. VGA is an analog signal.

Or an HDMI to VGA would work too.

u/bgw92 · 1 pointr/buildapc

Hey r/buildapc! I just finished my build including the GTX 1080 and ran into a small issue. :(

My monitor hookup used a VGA connection which is not supported by NVIDIA anymore...So I bought this adapter...

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009MPB2M4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

...in hopes it would work. Silly me didn't read the reviews before purchasing cause it was so cheap I don't really care, but it turns out the adapter simply does not work for converting VGA to DVI 24+1 pin since the GTX 1080 doesn't support DVI 24+5 connections.

My question is...is there any adapter or device that can allow me to hook up my VGA monitor to the new GTX 1080?

Thanks in advance, I hope this question was simple enough for this thread!

EDIT: Since the masterrace is rude. I have an HDMI Monitor, the VGA one is going to act as my second monitor. I just need to know if it is possible.

Can cheap DVI to VGA Adapters on Amazon be trusted? Ones like this have awful Reviews and even the Amazon Recommended one has loads of People claiming it doesn't work

u/RyanYags · 1 pointr/buildapc

That square means you will need an active adapter. You were going to need one regardless though, because your card only had 1 hdmi, 1 dvi and 2 mini displayports. You will need to use one of those mini displayports.

I bought this adapter and have been pleased with it. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004RFGK30/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_Dc5bub12SZGSK

u/SpectralRaz · 2 pointsr/buildapcsales

You would be better convert the DVI on your GPU to HDMI on the monitor.

Going from DVI TO DisplayPort I believe requires an active adapter that will be more expensive.

The many DVI to DisplayPort are uni-directional when you look online and can only go from a Source (Displayport) to Destination (DVI). Like this one

u/whom3 · 1 pointr/Alienware

I have the same item and it works great with the 15 R3.

Someone mentioned using the USB-C/thunderbolt connection but as mentioned this won't work. The Displayport lanes from the GPU are not hooked up to the USB-C port on the 15/17, whereas the HDMI port and miniDP port are.

With running 144hz I made sure to get a decent quality cable (like https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0163LQUH6)

u/Bjoolzern · 1 pointr/techsupport

look for ones that have "Active" in the name. Also look at reviews. Check that they specifically mention using modern cards that only have digital out, like the 1050 Ti, and that it works with that card. They often also has a box around the VGA part that houses the translation chip.

Here is an example of what to look for.

Note: I have no idea if the linked adapter is good or not. Active adapters have a chip inside them that translates the signal. Because of these chips the cheaper ones can break quite easily. Normal prices are 10-25 euro.

u/_vogonpoetry_ · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

For DVI-D you need an active adapter (same as HDMI>VGA) like this https://www.amazon.com/Active-DVI-D-Adapter-Benfei-Female/dp/B07D3XZ9SD/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_23_t_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=4Z13S2DPT8S8JZ716JEM

Or you can use your integrated graphics for the VGA monitor...

u/cf18 · 1 pointr/buildapc

If the video card only has DVI-D, i.e. all the new card since 2016 - GTX 10xx, RX 4xx and 5xx, then you need an active converter like this

https://www.amazon.com/Adapter-GANA-Converter-Supporting-displays/dp/B06XFR74K2

u/Docteh · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

The DVI cables that come with monitors are usually DVI single link, you could get Dual Link. /u/houndazs linked a cable from amazon.com, is there a different retailer you'd prefer to deal with? Here is one from the canadian amazon just in case

Do both of your monitors support DVI? If so, think about a second cable.

The I in DVI-I just means that you can plug either a DVI cable, or your DVI-VGA adapter fits. The D in DVI-D just means, "digital only"

http://www.outerlimitsconsulting.com/support/identify-parts.html
The DVI cable pictured on that page is the one typically included with a monitor.

u/SinkDemon · 1 pointr/buildapc

In that case, what I suggest doing is adapting the HDMI port or the DisplayPort port to DVI, for use with you main monitor and adapting the DVI port on the graphics card to VGA, for use with the other monitor.

It looks, from the Amazon page, that this card comes with a DVI to VGA adapter, which is handy.

So you want something like this (this may require an extra little bit of research so if you could tell me what the exact model of your main monitor is or take a picture of the outputs, that would be great) and also use the adapter that comes in the box with the graphics card for the secondary monitor.

u/tehponycorn · 1 pointr/applehelp

Isn't DVI-D better than VGA in most cases though?

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but from a cursory Google search that's what I've seen.

Would a Thunderbolt to DVI adapter like this one work?

u/Flowermanvista · 2 pointsr/crtgaming

Unfortunately, the RX580 does not have an analog output, so you're going to have to go with one of those active converters, which tend to have mediocre resolution support. This one seems to be decent.

As for the "signal timing issues", some cards may output DVI signals with very minimal blanking periods, which exist in the first place because a CRT requires a finite amount of time to sweep the electron beam from one edge of the screen back to the other. If the blanking periods aren't large enough, the CRT will use part of the visible image as the blanking period, since it physically cannot move the electron beam any faster. This may result in the image being messed up around the edges.

If this happens, you'll need to create a custom resolution with the AMD control panel that has sufficient blanking periods. I've never used an AMD card before, but when making the resolution, select the GTF timing mode, which will probably work well for 99% of resolutions and monitors.

u/Capital_Offense · 2 pointsr/buildapc

I don't think you even need a thunderbolt dock. Get two long DisplayPort cables (or 1 if your monitors can be daisy chained) and then a USB extension with a USB hub on the end. Plug your mouse and keyboard into the hub and plug any audio devices into your monitor. (I assume that they have audio, considering they are high end monitors)

Edit: Because I have nothing else to do, I looked into a single cable thunderbolt solution.
The idea came from this video, and it will be extremely expensive. Like is there really a good reason to not just move the PC by your monitors?
First, to use Thunderbolt, you need to actually have Thunderbolt on your computer. Luckily for you, ASUS has a PCI card to do just that. Your motherboard is not listed as supported, but your motherboard does have the Thunderbolt header that is needed by the card, and is a newer mobo from the same manufacturer, so there is a possibility it might work. Assuming it does, you would just connect the DisplayPort from your GTX 1080 to the Thunderbolt card.

The next thing you need is a long Thunderbolt cable. I don't know how far away the computer is going to be from the TB dock, but here is a 33' long Thunderbolt cable. If you need longer, you can get 100' for $600.

Next, you'll need the Thunderbolt dock. There are many out there. I have no experience with any of them Belkin and Elgato both make them.
An unfortunate thing about the Thunderbolt docks is that they only support dual display when one of the displays is a Thunderbolt display. Otherwise, you can only use one over HDMI or one over MiniDP to DP, but not both. So that would mean repeating the whole setup with 2 docks, or just going with the suggestion I made above.

u/chubbysumo · 1 pointr/techsupport

yes and no on the shared. If the DP is just outputting DVI, then its shared with the DVI2, if its outputting DP, then its not shared. For 3 or more monitors on all new graphics cards, you need an active displayport adapter, not a passive one. Active adapters are way more expensive than passive ones.

u/StefMacHollywood · 1 pointr/wacom

yea 'Active' cables are usually preferable, also StarTech is a Wacom trusted brand: that should work.

u/radman0x · 1 pointr/ultrawidemasterrace

alright, I'll give it a go, do you possibly have a link?

EDIT: NVM, already ordered this and this.

What sort of issues were you getting with your setup? I'm also hitting an issue where the monitor won't ever wake once it goes to sleep, even when only it's connected...

u/MYCRAFTisbest · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

OK. So you can ether by a DVI converter for the display port or for the HDMI port. HDMI and DVI cables are actually very close.

HDMI to DVI

DisplayPort to DVI

EDIT: Also just as a note, this isn't a question of maybe this will fix the issue. The GPU 100% needs the monitor to be plugged into a port on it, not on the motherboard. This is your issue and the GPU cannot do anything until you plug something into it.

u/Canadian4Paul · 2 pointsr/buildapc

Assuming your monitor has a displayport connector? You wouldn't need an adapter, just a dp to mini dp cable like this: http://www.amazon.ca/Displayport-Cable-Mini-Male/dp/B008XTW666/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1409844893&sr=8-1&keywords=minidisplayport+to+displayport

u/lime517 · 1 pointr/buildapc

I run three monitors, all different resolutions, for multitasking. I have my main, center monitor connected to my GTX 970 via DVI. My 970 has one DVI, one mini HDMI, and 3 mini DP outputs.
To run the other two monitors, I'm using my processors (i5 3550) integrated graphics. One monitor is connected via DVI, and the other by VGA/D-Sub.

I want to connect all three of my monitors to my 970, so I don't have to use the iGPU at all and avoid some driver and compatibility headaches. Preferably, I would just want to use an adapter to have the mini DP ports on my 970 go to the DVI in ports on my other two monitors. None of these monitors support HDMI or DP of any variant.

Would using an INACTIVE converter such as this work for what I want to do?

u/Hawkdup45 · 1 pointr/buildapc

Here you go, a VGA to DVI-D adapter. CableDeconn Active DVI-D Link 24+1 male to VGA FeMale M/F Video Cable Adapter Converter https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DW2BJWU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_VjznzbDM78CTW

u/drpcrdu · 2 pointsr/techsupport

Plug the second monitor into the GTX 1070 using an adapter, if necessary.

The GTX 1070 should have multiple outputs. What it has depends on the manufacturer make/model.

If it has VGA out: Use a VGA cable.

If it has DVI-D out:

https://www.amazon.com/Active-DVI-D-Adapter-Benfei-Female/dp/B07D3XZ9SD/ref=sr_1_3

If it has HDMI out:

https://www.amazon.com/Gold-Plated-Converter-Power-Free-Raspberry-Projector/dp/B0757FLCXV/ref=sr_1_4

If it only has DP out:

https://www.amazon.com/Rankie-DisplayPort-Adapter-Plated-Converter/dp/B00Z08TZNU/ref=sr_1_3

These 3 are all unidirectional adapters (meaning they work from DP out to VGA in / HDMI to VGA / DVI-D to VGA, not the other way around) . They should support up to1920x1080@60Hz, and all will require a VGA cable.

u/ilessthanthreemath · 1 pointr/buildapc

Oh, it looks like your card only has Mini DisplayPort ports. This should be the proper adapter.

u/MrKazador · 1 pointr/techsupport

If your gpu doesn't have the extra pins for DVI-A then you need a converter box. Something like this https://www.amazon.com/Active-DVI-D-Adapter-Benfei-Female/dp/B07D3XZ9SD

The DVI is probably a Dual Link DVI, so you should use that. If you're unable or simply don't want to make changes to your setup in order for the cable to reach, then simply buy a new one with the length that you require.

Yeah, well then the only way is to live with it, since the ports are prioritized in the hardware / driver and thus you can't change their order. :/

u/Whirly-Dirly · 1 pointr/buildapc

Thanks, I see now it does have a display port, I must have missed that. The monitor I was looking at for BF only has VGA/DVI so could I do some sort of adapter like DVI to Display Port or would I lose quality?

I had the DVI running from the monitor to my old Radeon 7770 and it worked fine. The DVI cable I use is a DVI-D Dual Link. I tried both DVI ports on the video card and neither seemed to pick up the monitor. Mind if you go a bit into more detail about the BIOS switch? Where would I find it for a graphics card? All I know about a BIOS switch is my keyboard's bios switch but that's about it.

I'm starting to think that the monitor might not be able to run at whatever the video card is trying to output. It seems to work on lower resolutions (I need to do more testing, I will get back tomorrow with results as it's already late here).
