>Didn't see your original reply but I can only imagine

It wasn't that bad, just snarky.

>Understand that a lot of times questions like these are made by people that are looking for quick fixes without any grounding in reality.

Sadly I'm well aware of that too. Have to fend off plenty of that IRL.

>Don't know what software you're running so I can't say whether a hybrid would help more than a raptor. Take a look at the benchmarks in the first link I posted to give you an idea of where it'll help. I've also never used one of these in a linux environment so I don't know if the difference in OS will limit the caching benefits of a hybrid - most of the work is done on the onboard controller, but who knows.

It's Ubuntu 10.10 10.04 with XFCE instead of full-on Gnome. Nothing terribly special about it except I'm using a modified Grub (the original grub not 2) that enables the L2 cache on the processor. The BIOS in this thing doesn't know what a P3 is so it doesn't enable the cache, it originally came with a P2.

>Also, don't know the model of the TP you're using, but are you sure it's SATA and not PATA? If PATA, you can mod it, but again, don't know if it would be worth it.

PATA. It's a 600e. http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:600E (if you read further you'll see there was more than one "type" of 600e, this one is the later which has the 100mhz bus)

If the ultrabay weren't housing a secondary battery the solution would be simple, replace the internal with a 2.5" SSD and slap the original in a hard drive adapter. But having that extra battery makes enough of a difference in run time that it's gotta stay... both batteries are new, the bay battery adds almost two hours, which when I plug in the wireless N card brings it back down to what the main battery would achieve alone w/o wireless.

If I can get disk I/O up a bit then it'd be worth messing with further to hack in other things, like a Thinklight and internal wifi/bluetooth. With the modem out (it's useless in 2011 anyway) there's plenty of room for an internal self-powered USB hub too - unless I bother to find a power rail, then I can put in a powered one which would be much more useful.

edit: Almost forgot, one solution I've been kicking around is a pata-CF adapter thingy like this one with a 30MB/s card. What's stopping me is all the writing that would be done to it during the normal course of operation, not just user stuff but swap which is pretty much a requirement on a memory-limited POS like this.

If you don't need speed go for something like this WD Drive. This will be the best bang for your buck if you don't mind the speeds and you can't go wrong with a WD Drive.

Then if speed is a must you are going to pay a premium for an external SSD.

Samsung T5 This is hailed as one of the best consumer grade external SSD's you can buy at the moment.

VectoTech Rapid 2TB SSD This seems to be below the average asking price for a 2TB SSD with great reviews.

u/QYV- · 1 pointr/Seaofthieves

that is NOT an SSD drive, imho that's one of the cheaper/slower drives you can buy. just because it's branded doesn't make it ideal :) remember ANY drive works fine.

so you're locking the price point at around $90 no problem. that's what I was referring to in my original post... HDs get much more capacity for the same money, SSDs are a lot faster.

Here are some ~$90 SSD on Amazon, I just searched for "usb3 ssd 240GB":
https://www.amazon.com/MyDigitalSSD-240GB-SuperSpeed-Portable-Support/dp/B00EZ2FRP2
https://www.amazon.com/PNY-Elite-240GB-Portable-Solid/dp/B01GQPXBQC
https://www.amazon.com/KINGSHARE-USB3-0-External-Portable-Support-Silver/dp/B077FV4DDH

anything along those lines should work.. those are self contained SSD drives with a USB enclosure so the drive is more protected. Personally I got one of these which would let me connect any SATA (the data connector) drive to usb: https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-USB3S2SAT3CB-Drive-Adapter-Cable/dp/B00HJZJI84
and then bought a nice fast 240GB SSD drive when it went on sale... this deal is already over but here's an example:
https://slickdeals.net/f/11538691-240gb-crucial-bx300-sata-2-5-solid-state-drive-58-40-free-shipping
or this: https://slickdeals.net/f/11535383-patriot-burst-2-5-sata-iii-internal-ssd-240gb-55-120gb-36-free-shipping?src=SiteSearch

so theoretically if you got the drive for around $50-60 and the $10 cable you saved around $20-30 from your $90 price point. all depends on how much you care about having a nice enclosure. Personally I have no problem sitting the raw drive attached by cable on my xbox in my entertainment center it's pretty secure. If you have kids or dogs or the xbox is exposed I'd get one in an enclosure

.

When you finally get a drive and plug it in to your Xbox, the Xbox should prompt you asking what you want to do with the drive... if not just go into settings / system / storage. You need to tell the Xbox that you want to use it for GAMES (as opposed to just media) so it will need to format the drive. At that point, you can move games (via the Manage Game dialog) from wherever it is currently installed to the external drive. Since it's Windows, there's also a "default install location" you can change if you want things you download to automatically go the external drive.

u/Zithero · 11 pointsr/techsupport

I've... got to ask the reason why you'd be running WoW on an SD card.

An SD Card has a maximum of 100,000 Write Cycles. As they are traditionally used for Cameras and the like this usually isn't a huge deal, because you'd need to take 100k photos, and even then you'd need to take those 100k photos across the entire size of the SD Card...

That being said a WoW install is huge, 50GB+ depending on add-ons. If you're running that, constantly, WoW has micro patches, writes changes to the files frequently for other reasons, and the like.

So while it was, certainly something that could work, it was going to fail at some point. Likely were averaging something like 15 to 65 write cycles every day on that poor SD card... and now it's fried.

I'd suggest, if you must have something external, to try and find an external SSD. These normally have support for many more write-cycles, so the point where it would be years before you'd ever have to worry about them.

edit:

Something like this might match affordability and use case better:

u/Etrenix · 1 pointr/windows8

Yes your scenario is quite correct.

I do understand that it wouldn't be ideal, but I'd like to see the outcome anyway. Like you said, it'd be a fun experiment to try out. If it turns out unplayable then at least I know for future reference. If it turns out well then all the more better!

Of course nothing external could replace the native install of windows and anything close would probably cost a fortune and is probably still not optimised as it is new technology.

The Samsung T5 2TB is well rated. This one comes in close behind SanDisk 2TB Extreme Portable External SSD - Up to 550MB/s - USB-C, USB 3.1 - SDSSDE60-2T00-G25 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078T9SZ3K

I would go SSD - safer to travel with. 2TB seems best. You can also get an 860 EVO for $230 and get an enclosure but I think that’s portable one I linked to would suffice.

Edit: if you need more than 2TB, you would want to switch back to disk as it’s cheaper and I can find a good one but SSD is best if you can survive with 2 TB.

u/Hothabanero6 · 3 pointsr/Surface

USB 3.0 SSD drives/sticks will give you speeds in the 400+mbps range.

USB 3.0 flash drives like the SanDisk Extreme top out at 250mbps many don't get there but may be in the 120-150 range and write speeds vary so choose wisely grasshopper.

Micro SD cards typically top out around 90 mbps for the best cards. write speeds are often not given and can be very low. Check carefully and again choose wisely grasshopper.

I thought I had a Samsung one, but I found the receipt from early 2018 and it’s actually a brand called PNY that I went with. I found a link for it on Amazon, it’s actually way cheaper now than when I had bought it.

It’s done really well for me, but if I was in the market for one right now, I’d wait a week for the Black Friday week sales/Cyber Monday and just pick from there for the best deal.

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/RandomKindness

It depends on what type of inputs your motherboard has... Assuming it only has a regular 2.5" SATA port you can find something like this on amazon for much cheaper than $60 dollars. However you WILL need to buy some sort of adapter unless your desktop motherboard already has a spot for an mSata chip. If I understand correctly the workers at Fry's were basically saying you needed to externally mount the mSATA via USB in order to boot to it - which is incorrect and much less advisable than connecting your main boot drive directly to your motherboard like you want to. However, if this is what you want I also saw mSATA to USB adapters for much cheaper than $60 on amazon as well.

tl;dr Buy an mSATA to whatever type of SATA drive your motherboard currently supports adapter from amazon or newegg, and mount the drive internally.

u/SirLaxer · 1 pointr/xboxone

Don't worry about an SSD, the speed boost is tiny compared to how much you'd be paying to get storage comparable to a HDD.

I've used a WD Passport for almost two years now (and I use them for computer backups as well) and I've had zero issues whatsoever.

WD My Passport 2TB drive for $92, or the 1TB version for $72 (though I personally feel that doubling the storage for only $20 is better, both cost-wise and in terms of long-term value).

Or you could pay almost $400 for a Samsung SSD with half the storage.

u/kingjulian85 · 7 pointsr/DestinyTheGame

NOTE FOR PS4 PLAYERS:

The PS4 does not support external storage devices under 250GB, so don't make the mistake of going for a 128GB drive or something like that to save money. I got this VectoTech 500GB drive and it's been working great.

https://www.amazon.com/VectoTech-Rapid-500GB-External-Portable/dp/B01JKMZ8IC/ref=sr_1_17?keywords=external+ssd&qid=1562785792&s=gateway&sr=8-17

u/jam6618 · 1 pointr/videography

I personally edit of the internal fusion drive in my 2012 iMac and store footage and personal stuff on a 5TB desktop hard drive (almost full).

Hind-sight 20-20, I would have preferred to get a larger raid array for my desk, something on the order of 20TB. Then also have a 500GB or bigger external SDD for fast editing of my current 1 or 2 projects. And then also a 2-4TB external hard drive for on-site backup and transporting large files. I don't know how I would like that setup, but from those that have some of the components, it seems like it would be a great setup. I would then reserve my computer hard drive for personal stuff.

u/GIJared · 2 pointsr/DestinyTheGame

Not shitting on you, but just pointing out you can get similar performance for half the price(albeit without a ruggedized drive).

I just ordered this one:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07C5BG857/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

500GB for $129.

Yours is the better choice if you want a truly portable option. Mine will be staying on my desk.

u/its_boosh · 1 pointr/burstcoin

Yes it would work to make plotting faster on SMR type drives that are normally painfully slow like seagates. Keep in mind copying over the plot still takes considerable time, its not going to be a quick copy and paste job like everything else.

I use this to stage the plot https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01JKMZ6L6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

it writes incredibly fast with an SSD but a normal WD hdd will still be considerably quicker.

u/z-zy · 1 pointr/mac

Your best is probably to set up a hackintosh on an external SSD like this or a partition as a dual boot. See /r/hackintosh for info on how to set this up yourself from the official apple install media so you can be sure it’s not tampered with.

any of these should do the job, and obviously there are larger and smaller sizes depending on what you need. it's not gonna be as fast as an internal ssd, and i think you'll need at least usb 3.0 to get good speeds (im not sure where the bottleneck is, if 3.1 gen 2 will actually make a difference), but it'll still demolish an internal hdd and probably any economical nas based solution

u/NinfoSho · 1 pointr/buildapcsales

Would that be better deal as external ssd with enclosure or it's better to go regular portable ssd like the Silicon Power 1TB?

u/Bounty1Berry · 2 pointsr/vintagecomputing

Alternative: Any 486-or-so era laptop, using an adapter to run a CompactFlash card in lieu of the hard drive. Depending on the model you choose, it could easily be removed (or you could always cut a slot in the case to allow easy removal) and just slap the card in a reader on your desktop.

http://www.amazon.com/Syba-Connectivity-44-pin-Compact-Adapter/dp/B0036DDXUM for example.

Alternatively, something that supports a PCMCIA or onboard Ethernet could theoretically let you pass the files over the network, but a lot of machines and operating systems would be too primitive to handle the necessary software.

At college, I brought in a few 486 laptops, running either OS/2 3.0 or DOS + GEM, for note-taking. THe DOS ones performed better.

  1. It makes sense

  2. No bracket needed, just changed one this week for a friend.

  3. I bought this one, great deal on an MLC drive, bought mine with a great discount at $65dlls but $99dlls is still good.

Hopefully I can post this here, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0765QBGZZ - but that is what I use and I use it for backups!!! too, just FYI I also backup in real time with dropbox, never lose your music.

u/jasonwsc · 1 pointr/buildapc

I would say the Samsung T3 external SSD, but that is now EOL. The newer T5 seems a bit too expensive at 1TB for about $165.

If you want fast write speeds then you will want external SSDs like the Samsungs above or this one, otherwise a normal external HDD should be fine.

u/greyztaxi2 · 1 pointr/PUBGXboxOne

I went with this one from SadDisk
But you really can't go wrong as long as you get a Solid State Drive (SSD), it is at a minimum 240GB, and supports usb 3.0. If you get an internal SSD you need to by an adapter that supports usb 3.0. Anything smaller than 240GB and xbox won't recognize the drive as game storage and won't format it correctly to store games, it will only let you store music and movies and those types of files.

You will pay more per GB for external SSDs, but you'll have better peace of mind if you accidentally bump or drop the SSD while it's connected to your computer.

I prefer Samsung for SSDs. http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Portable-500GB-External-MU-PS500B/dp/B00RWXVMRS

As this is Samsung's first external SSD offering, we won't know about future design.

If consistency is important, you could always buy multiple external enclosures and install internal SSDs inside.

u/AdversarialPossum42 · 3 pointsr/linux4noobs

>If the other laptop is 15 years old, you might want to check that it supports SATA, and not IDE - otherwise an SSD is not going to be an option.

A Compact Flash to IDE adapter would still be better than whatever spinning disk originally came in the laptop. Ubuntu doesn't need much space. Even an 8 GB CF card would be more than enough for tinkering around.

I have a 2015 5K iMac that I run from a USB 3.0 2.5" SSD that I want to upgrade to a NVMe PCIe SSD in a USB C 3.1 enclosure. I asked Apple support chat yesterday if using the Apple TB3-2 would allow a portable USB C 3.1 drive to run at full speed over TB2 and they said yes…

Hi! I am an OG Xbox one console owner and I am looking at getting an SSD or external hard drive as I want faster loading times and might be running out of space soon. I mainly play Destiny 2, NBA 2k20, and Call of Duty and these games/DLCs will be coming out soon. I delete a lot of games I haven't played in a month, so I usually have no more than 5 games installed. For example, I'll be deleting NBA 2k19 and BO4 so I can install the new COD and 2k20, so space may not be an issue.

I was wondering if you can help a console player. I went on amazon and found a TC SUNBOW 500GB SSD for $90, but found another Samsung 500gb one that is way more expensive. I'll link some others:

Sandisk

ADATA

I may be asking much, but I am wondering what is the difference between some of these. All are about 500gb, but some are way cheaper than others. Is it the brand? Keep in mind, I only am looking to buy an SSD for load times first, storage second (as I mentioned before, I always delete games I'm not playing).

u/CODedVengence · 1 pointr/VideoEditing

To expand on that:

2TB portable external HDD: $70

1TB portable external SSD: $310 - $397

1TB USB Flash Drive: $700? - $2.5k

The Amazon result was the only I could find that was selling a 1TB flash drive (ebay has them too, but ebay also has a lot of fakes); which I believe had a starting price of 700 dollars when it was first released. But given that nobody seems to sell them anymore, it seems this Amazon retailer decided to jack up the price.

It's a 128GB mSATA SSD.

In addition to /u/ubergeek42's suggestions I'd like to add this

u/jbkly · 2 pointsr/DestinyTheGame

Get an external USB 3.0 SSD like what OP used, a Samsung T1 250GB SSD.

u/Rodry2808 · 2 pointsr/videography

Why does it need to be a hard drive? Can't you edit from the ssd inside de Mbp and then transfer the files? I feel that you are worthlessly bottlenecking. But if you really need to edit outside your machine I would reccomend something like this and the a hardrive for storage. But you will never get fair speed from a mechanical hardrive regardless if it's Thunderbolt or USB 3. The speed of a hdd can't even match the top speed of both interfaces so it doesn't really matter (you would see a speed diference however but its from the cache and it would make a difference in a bunch of large files)

This works well and comes in different amounts of storage.

get this and save yourself a couple bucks on the housing

I’m on the OG Xbox, no more play doh, I can land all the hotspots and everything is loaded in.

I have an SSD external on my PS4, and it currently takes up 81.67 GB on a 1TB SSD. I got a large one only for extra storage for any other games i want to run faster.

The one i bought is here, for reference.

Sorry for the multiple replies...I found this: VectoTech Rapid 1TB External SSD USB-C Portable Solid State Drive (USB 3.1 Gen 2) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01JKMZ8FA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_TTUFDbG2Z44XK

Would this be good for my Windows 8 Laptop?

u/Batcannn · 1 pointr/PUBGXboxOne

I think that has the same write speed as the internal drive on the Xbox. You want an SSD either portable which is just plug and go or an internal SSD with an enclosure case. Here's an example of portable which I own: https://www.amazon.ca/PNY-Elite-240GB-Portable-Solid/dp/B01GQPXBQC/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?crid=2X6OV52EAR63R&keywords=pny+ssd+240gb&qid=1554963011&s=gateway&sprefix=pny+ssd&sr=8-3

Ooh says external hard drive right in the title.. (HARD DRIVE) needs to be a solid state drive

And 2tb for 60 bucks way too cheap to be a ssd. I got a sandisk 250gb ssd for 60

Only if it has USB C 3.1 gen 2 I think.

Western Digital has a similar model https://www.amazon.ca/WDBKVX5120PSL-WESN-512GB-Passport-Portable-Storage/dp/B07C5BG857/

There may be others.

i've heard that the read and writes are slow and are really not designed for it. if your dealing with large projects i'd buy a portable ssd using usb3.0 ports on your computer instead.

or portable hdd for slower speeds but way more space on the cheap

I have a Samsung T1 Portable SSD

It was a little under $600. Stupid fast, but I havent tried to plug it in to any of my android devices yet.

u/KLouaroo · 3 pointsr/deals

Oops my bad I just saw external and thought HDD. Reading comp bad. This is still the same price on Amazon which is actually legitimate and pretty standard pricing:

I had these issues. Replaced my USB card with a proper SSD drive, no more problems. Using this Sandisk rugged SSD drive.

u/GrammarFailure · 2 pointsr/videography

None of these are reasonable unless you have a lot of money and really want a turnkey system/you actually need something that's as fast as 2 pcie m2 ssds striped together.

If you need something that can do 2800mb/s then...maybe? Samsung is coming out with a 1tb PCIE m.2 SSD for $650 so you're looking at $1300 for just 2 drives, but getting an external enclosure that utilizes thunderbolt3/usb type C and can actually saturate 2800mb/s is going to be very difficult if not impossible.

So the answer is.. it's kind of reasonable? If you're fine with a lowly 500MB/s buy a 850 EVO m.2 and an OWC enclosure and you've spent about $400 for 1tb. Or get a prebuilt Samsung T3 2tb for $750

u/royeiror · 1 pointr/techsupport

Replacing the hard drive for a similar one is a bad proposition, being as how it's very very old tech which is very expensive and prone to fail just because of age.

I'd go the Compact Flash conversion route, and buy a converter and a 32GB Flash Card and call it a day.

although you could spend more and get a dual card converter that fits nicely in your caddy and spend on faster cards.

>Earlier today I posted what I thought was an interesting anecdotal experience I had after installing and running Destiny on my Xbox One from an external SSD I received as a Christmas present, demonstrating that the SSD loaded about 20 seconds faster than the HDD. Turns out, my methodology of "hey, this is neat, let me share it to DTG," was fatally flawed and not up to the academic snuff of some of the DTG Fellows. Because I'm an overly-sensitive 30 something who can't let go of meaningless internet arguments, I decided to more rigorously test my completely anecdotal, possible placebo-effected findings, instead of letting them eat away at my very core only to make my wife have to listen to an overly long story about a reddit disagreement after she's had a long day at work.
>
>Below is a video demonstration of the SSD Phenomenon originially reported on in my now-deleted, completely inadequate, first post:
>
>https://youtu.be/7TtmVP_-vNo
>
>As you can see in the video my SSD guardian arrives at the tower approximately 20 seconds before the HDD guardian. Pretty neat, right? WRONG! That is a single video, demonstrating a single result, from a single occurrence. That could have been purely the result of RNG, or Bungie's servers, or my own ISP, you nitwit. Now, if you're ready for some big-boy sciencing, then buckle up, because the real results are below.
>
>Methodology:
>
>I used the stopwatch on my phone to track the time it took from pressing "A" to launch Destiny from an unloaded state to the time my Guardian's landing animation finished at the tower and his arms were at his sides. To do this, I would launch Destiny and rapidly press "A" during the "Bungie" title screen to initiate the character select screen as quickly as possible (different from what is shown in the video). While the character select screen was loading I would hold the left thumb stick at a slight North East angle so as to not overshoot the emblem and have to reverse course. While orbit was loading I would hold the left thumb stick in a slight South West angle to anticipate the "Set Destination" button. Once selected I would rapidly press "A" to select the tower as quickly as possible and then hold the left thumb stick in a slight South East angle to select "Launch." Once my cursor was over "Launch" I would rapidly press "A" to select it as soon as it was available. Once my ship was launched I pressed no other button until my Guardian was at the Tower and their landing animation had finished, at which point I stopped the timer and restarted the process. When a disconnect occurred I simply reset the timer, quit Destiny, and restarted the process.
>
>The testing process took place between 11:30 and 13:00 EST. I tested the HDD first. Took an undocumented break to cook and feed my daughters lunch, then resumed testing by uninstalling Destiny from the HDD and plugging the SSD back in.
>
>The test was run on a Samsung T1 Portable 250GB External SSD and an Xbox One console with a 500gb HDD and Kinect. The only third party game/application installed on the HDD was Destiny and its DLC, while the SSD included Destiny and it's DLC and various other third party games and apps.
