The core material EDC, to me would be knife, light and cellphone. But cool keychain gidgets are really nice too.

So I'd say if you have a knife, a good flashlight would be next, then a backup knife and light (one is none, two is one). I like a multi-tool or SAK for my backup knife, and a keychain light for my backup torch.

(In case you're curious, after that I start considering footwear, gloves, hats and other clothing.)

I would easily suggest the Thrunite TN12 over the PD35 because it's available in a Neutral White tint and has a moonlight mode which is a minimum requirement for what I want in a light. (Both lights have great mode spacing, nearly identical beam patterns, and nearly identical outputs.) If those requirements of mind don't matter to you though then the PD35 will have a little better build quality. There's built-in rechargeable versions of these lights as well, the TC12 & UC35. (Avoid the PD35 2014 version overall.)

The BLF A6 is a great budget light. The QC isn't quite as good as the two brands above but it's a great light for those who want something bright without going broke for the week.

The Atactical A1 is a new & interesting light. Not quite as bright as the others but it looks like it could make a good budget light. Looking at this review, it's interesting how much it looks like Thrunite which it seems like it's actually made by Thrunite based off the beginning portion of the review. Honestly seems like a pretty good light minus it being only a Cool White tint. I didn't realize how cheap it is to get until I saw your link. I might start recommending it more often.

The TH10 isn't bad but it is on the larger size of single 18650 headlamps. Should provide a good throw while having usable spill. Definitely not a great light for close up hands-on work due to the focused beam but seems alright for your needs. I'm just wondering how front heavy it is. The Nitecore HC30 or HC50 might be a little better option though than the TH10.

It's certainly a great light but certainly on the larger size as well. Definitely not pocket friendly. Or not at least with the pants that I wear. Cargo pants pocket might be fine though. You'll be blown away by how bright this guy is.

So in my mind, the basics of an EDC are a knife, a flashlight, a pen, and a notebook. Depending on your preference/level of preparedness, though, multitools are great, a gun is convenient if you're in a dangerous place with any regularity, and a first-aid kit can literally be a lifesaver.

So for the basics I'd recommend:
Knife: a Kershaw Leek or Scrambler. The Leek is smaller, more discreet, very light, and razor sharp. The Scrambler is considerably more robust, has a longer blade (3.5" vs. 3"), but weighs more as well. Both can be found in Kershaw's "Blackwash" finish, which I like both for the feel and for the added rust and scratch resistance. Both are also spring-assisted, which is legal in a lot of places, but check your local laws before carrying either in public. If you can't carry them, take a look at the Cold Steel Voyager. It comes in several lengths, is legal in California, and is very durable, if not super comfortable.

Flashlights: Oh my god, the flashlights. LEDs have become so cheap and so bright over the last few years that it's actually pretty hard to go wrong. Nitecore is currently my favorite brand, but Fenix has some options as well. I would urge you not to buy a surefire; they are undeniably great lights, but unless you expect to encounter truly extraordinary circumstances on a regular basis (any chance your light could fall under a tank or a bulldozer? maybe surefire is for you), they tend to be somewhat more pricey per lumen than a number of other companies. For EDC, the Fenix PD35 2014 edition is almost unmatched. Almost a thousand lumens, takes rechargeable batteries, and small enough to drop into the front pocket of your jeans, if you don't want to use the included clip or holster. If you'd like something more keychain sized, the Nitecore SENS series comes in several sizes and battery types, and automatically adjusts the brightness of the beam based on the light's orientation. Aim it at your feet and you get a soft glow; aim it off into the woods and it grows steadily brighter.

Let's be honest, a pen is going to get lost. The best pen is one you like enough to keep track of, but one you won't miss too terribly should some co-worker walk off with it. I like the Zebra F-301. Writes smooth, classic stainless steel good looks, and comes in RGB & Black. Notebooks depend entirely on personal preference too, but the smallest Moleskine is easily pocketable and has 32 lined pages.

In my mind, there is only one name in multitools. Leatherman has a kick-ass reputation, a 25-year warranty, and a plethora of tools to suit any need. For the casual EDC, I'd go with what I believe is the second-lightest full size tool, the Skeletool. 7 functions include a knife that opens while the rest of the tool is closed, the ubiquitous pliers/wirecutters, two double-sided bits and a driver; and it looks so. freakin. cool.

I dunno much about guns except that of all the things I've listed, a pistol should be the one you consider most carefully, especially whether you need it or not. It's a big investment and a bit of a lifestyle adjustment if you decide to go CCW. I've always heard 9mm and up, so use that as a jumping-off point.

First aid kits are useless unless they're both small enough to be carried anywhere and large enough to contain anything you might need. Making your own is a good idea because you have the best knowledge of your environment, but I found a couple on Amazon which seem to have most of the basics without too much fluff or bulk. The first could be stuffed in a jacket pocket, whereas the second would be useful in a car.

I like my SRT5, but given the choice in the current market, I think I could save a few bucks on some alternatives. I do really like the control ring of the SRT5 and it is still unique in the market, but I don't think it's worth the extra price on top of some of these competitors.

If you would like power and separate mode switches, you've got the TN12, P12, P10, and PD35 to choose from. For a better value with just a single switch there is the E35UE and Neutron 2C V2. Based on my preference and budget I would try to get the TN12 (2014) in neutral tint if you can find it. If I needed a quicker turnaround I'd probably go with the P12 at $60. These are based on my personal criteria, definitely have a look at the parametrek page for your parameters as well.

All that being said, I've changed my opinion a little bit. I know lights without zoom are still more durable and lighter, but I wonder if a zoom light is capable of more throw at lower levels of brightness - this would mean a simple twist, instead of a button press, to see further away and adjust back to normal use, and less battery drain. If anyone has a contact at Wowtac, I'd love to get an A1 and A3, or an A1s and A3s in hand so I could do a side by side comparison and come back with some definitive measurements.

I would recommend a flashlight, and small multitool.

If you're looking for a more versitile toolset, look through the remainder of Leatherman's great micro-multi-tool lineup. Try to stay away from Gerber products if at all possible.

Flash-Drive

A flash-drive can be useful as well, but it's hard to find one that is both small and durable. I did a lot of research on which option to buy for quite a while. The grail of USB flash drives is the PQI Tiffy because of its incredible speed and durable housing. Unfortunately, it is nearly impossible to find for sale, and it's also super expensive. I went for the Kingston Datatraveler | [Amazon Link] $10.40, and it's working very well for me.

Fire

I've rarely needed one, but many folks want to carry a fire-starter with them, and there are some small options for your keychain. The Exotac NanoStriker $23.50 is a ferrocerium-based striker, and the True Utility FireStash [Amazon Link] $16.23 is a simple, tiny lighter.

Suspension

Finally, it's nice to have your keys hanging in a comfortable place in your pocket, and not in a bunched-up heap at the bottom. Definitly consider grabbing a P-7 suspension clip $12+shipping. I waited a while to pull the trigger on mine, but I don't regret it.
Another option would be the Obstructures Pry/Open tool $32. It serves as a pry-bar, which you don't yet understand how much you might use after you start carrying one.

We recently had a pet disaster situation - the litter box got blocked one night, and the cats peed elsewhere. I cleaned up everything I could find, but the smell just wouldn’t go away, no matter how much I aired out the room. Several weeks later, I realized it was the couch - it had been soaked in pee. I had to get rid of the entire thing to get the smell to go away.

A cheap UV flashlight like this one, shined all around the room that smells (at night), can help you locate the source of the smell. It will make any pee spots/puke spots light up so you can find them and clean them. If the cats have peed a large amount on anything that’s fabric (clothing/rug/furniture), your best bet may simply be to get rid of it. Even the most thorough cleaning won’t completely get rid of the smell; if the cats can still smell any of it, they’re likely to continue marking the same spot, because now it smells like a litter box with them.

I agree with the other commenters about the importance of changing the litter box frequently (and that the usual rule for how many litter boxes you should have available is number of cats + one). But to keep them from continuing to mark whatever it is that’s currently carrying the stink (my guess is carpet, couch, or pile of clothes), you’ve got to find it and get it out of the house.

For a ridiculously expensive quick fix, they make automatic, self-cleaning litter boxes. They cost several hundred dollars (although occasionally they can be found for about a hundred on fb marketplace, and they do offer financing for about $40 a month), so seriously - very expensive. But it cleans itself, every single time your cat uses it. Cat goes, it waits on a timer, and then it sifts the litter and the clumped waste goes into a regular kitchen trash bag in the drawer underneath the unit. Every so often (with four cats, it would probably be every other day), you take out the trash bag full of waste, toss it, and put in a new bag. When you do, you add a couple cups of litter. It only needs a deep clean (emptying the litter and wiping down the inside of the globe) maybe once a month. Again, super expensive - but it’s a quick fix solution that would scoop the litter box thirty-five times a day, if your cats go thirty-five times that day. Depending on how much you’re planning to spend on the safe outdoor space for the cats (I’m assuming you mean some type of catio or fenced porch?), it could end up costing about the same thing.

Hold onto your pride in the progress you’ve made. Your mom may not see how big of a difference you’ve made, but you know what it looked like before and what it looks like now. Keep going in the right direction.

There are many skin issues that could cause discoloration. One indication of vitiligo would be that it glows under a black light, like the hands in this image.

I'm not an expert (AKA dermatologist) but I know vitiligo tends to start around joints and the face. It usually spreads from there to the rest of your body.

However, it could start elsewhere but the fact that these spots on your back are the first ones you're noticing makes me think it's less likely that it's vitiligo, though it's still possible.

Best thing you can do (aside from seeing a doctor) is get yourself a black light (Amazon has some small handheld ones) and a mirror.

Turn out the lights, get naked and shine the black light over your body slowly as you look for spots that glow. If it's vitiligo, you'll see it glow and look very different than the surrounding skin. You'll also likely find other areas of your skin that hasn't fully lost pigment due to vitiligo which will also glow. They may even be tiny spots that look like a bunch of freckles. I don't think vitiligo is the only skin issue that glows but if it doesn't glow at least you know it's not vitiligo.

I'm saying to get completely naked because vitiligo can effect genitalia as well. Make sure you look around there.

Of course, if you have healthcare options, it's best to see a dermatologist. Vitiligo can be treated. If you catch it early, such as now with only a few spots, treatment can be very easy and fast. Treatment for a couple of small spots may only require a few months of using a cream and a little light treatment.

If it's something else, you also want to catch it early, so that you can start any possible treatment.

I have EDC'd an Olight S2 Baton for about 6 months now. I think it would fit your needs well.

It is right at £40, but I think it is well worth it. Extremely bright, very tiny and rugged, great user interface.

Also, 18650 is definitely the way to go. So much better than AA. Slightly bigger, but waaaay brighter and longer lasting. Get some of these and a nice charger. Make sure the batteries say Made in Japan when you receive them.

$76 total, and you just need a LiIon charger for the 18650, or you can use a more serious hobby charger, as well as a 1" light mount. this light is versatile enough for use in every day carry if you so desire, and the bare minimum of what I consider a 'good light' It also comes in the 'MH' series (ie MH12) that is USB rechargable but costs more. This should give you 4-5 hours of 'max bright' around 900 lumens with a good 100-200' of throw, has strobe, momentary, and a good selection of brightness modes.

if you're feeling cheaper than that, don't buy some offbrand <whatever>fire brand thing that will catch fire. There are some interesting variations on the ultrafires, like the models that they ripped off initially which aren't bad

The convoy doesn't have as many modes, but it has most of what you need, Full bright, medium and low, as well as Strobe and a function to remember which mode when you toggle momentary. This one isn't as throwy, but still puts out around 600 lumens and casts out to around 90'. The convoy isn't impact resistant, so you may want a lens protector if you can be bothered. It' the cheapest thing I can feel comfortable recommending

Have you thought about getting small flashlight? I own Olight S1 Baton and it works great when I am traversing my apartment when dark (I'm the one who goes to the bed last).

As for strain - make sure brightness is set to low value. What strains the eyes the most is not the screen per se, but the difference between pitch dark and torch light from super bright monitor. Turning down the brightness will ease that.

edit: You could also get anti-glare (so called "computer") glasses, but those can get expensive. On the other hand, sometimes employers refund those, so you might be in luck.

Fenix does make some great lights but IMHO they stumbled with the E12 - I had an E11 for years and it was the perfect pocket light. On the E11 the button did one thing - turned the light on and off (and momentary). Sadly my last E11 is deep beneath the ocean...
But they decided, with the E12, to use the same button for cycling through the different brightness modes, and got rid of the half-press momentary-on. That's rather annoying when you want to grab it and look inside a roadcase quick.

I'm somewhat concerned with the O.C. spray, as according to their website "18% OC" isn't a thing. Major Capsinoids are what determines how effective OC is and nowhere do they mention what percentage of Major Capsinoids their spray contains. It cannot be 18% as the most effective sprays used by law enforcement (i.e. Sabre Red, etc) are at 1.33%. Get and carry Sabre Red. Problem solved. Do not get gel, unless you like the idea of waiting around for half a minute or so for the effects to manifest themselves. Gel has a much longer activation time and you lose the inhalation effects. Get a stream.

Jabber. Likely worthless. Even if you know and are well-versed in kubotan techniques, they still aren't a worthwhile defensive tool because they can't cause enough pain or do enough damage to physically incapacitate a determined attacker. If you are looking for a defensive tool to carry in your hand, carry the spray.
Spray should be your first option for de-escalation and defense, after of course awareness and avoidance.

Lights. Invest in a quality light or three. Olight, Fenix, Streamlight and Surefire make excellent lights. I have a small Olight I3E on my key fob. It's an excellent emergency, always have it sort of little light.

Strongly consider adding or swapping out your bandanas for actual N95 masks. N95 means they will filter 95% of particulates. There are N99 and N100 masks as well, but an N95 will be adequate for filtering out dust and smoke in almost all short term scenarios you might encounter.

My last suggestion since you seem to be properly concerned with self defense is this:

Go find a Judo club or a jiu jitsu gym and train. Go once and then don't stop going. Any reputable club or gym will allow you to come in and audit a class or two for free. I've watched female whitebelts with 6 months of regular practice absolutely demolish big new guys coming into the gym.

The first thing I learned is there are things I'd like to carry with me all the time, and then there's the annoyance of encumbrance. All of these EDC videos on YouTube show some interesting products, but there's no way I could walk around with all the shit people carry on them all day.

I have found nothing better than the Troika for organizing keys, and things that can be carried on keyrings. Since my latest vehicle is push-to-start, I no longer have to concern myself too much with weight on my keyring the way I used to when I had to put it into the ignition. I am such a fan of these Troikas that I just give them out as gifts to everyone I know.

I realized that I don't have a lifestyle where I really need full-sized tools on an everyday carry basis. Accordingly, I just use a Leatherman Micra and a one-cell Fenix E01 flashlight. If I know I'm going out walking at night, I'll bring something larger, but my point here is the first thing I did was pare down what I carried to what I actually needed. Both are connected to the Troika with my keys, and easily detachable (that's what the Troika does best.)

This way, my front right pocket contains my keys, the Micra, and a Flashlight.

Secondly, I always wear an unbuttoned overshirt everywhere I go. This provides me breast pockets in which I carry a pen. So-called "tactical" pens are mocked, in large part because they are called "tactical" pens, which is hilarious. However, these have a variety of benefits:

• They are me-proof. Because they are made of durable metal, they won't get bent or explode on me. This is important.
  
  
• The one I use has a rape whistle and a firestarter (srsly) in it as well. I will likely never have use for either, but I get them "for free."
  
  One pocket contains the pen, and sometimes a penlight (which is as much "full sized" flashlight as I need.) The Streamlight Stylus Pro is simply the best flashlight I've ever owned:
  
  
• It is affordable.
  
  
• It is not "too much" flashlight. I used to carry a Fenix LD20 for walking at night, but, aside from its annoying features (the stupid strobe mode, for example), I found that in the event it moved across the window of a house, it would likely alarm the tenants. Super-powered flashlights have their uses and fans, but for walking at night where I live, it's overkill for me. If I was searching for something in the dark, I'd maybe bring something heavier. In addition, it doesn't fuck with my night vision the way one of the super bright ones does. Sometimes less is more. It's also more carryable and less fiddly.
  
  The Stylus Pro lives in my breast pocket next to the pen when I carry it, and it has one feature I love more than others: one mode, and one mode only. I never engage the strobe by mistake or anything like this. If I ever need to use it in combination with a firearm, I won't have to worry about activating the wrong mode. It has a single "proud" clicky at the back, and is just the shit. So much so I own 4 - one for the car, and a few in other rooms of the house.
  
  The other breast pocket carries my cell phone.
  
  Wallet is a Maxpedition Spartan, the best wallet I've ever owned, and the longest-lasting by orders of magnitude. That ALWAYS GOES IN THE BACK LEFT POCKET, because on the occasions I have a gun, that is carried on my right at about 4:30. As I am rountinely stopped and questioned by police just for walking at night, and asked to produce my ID, I don't want my hand going anywhere near my pistol (or exposing it by lifting up my shirt on that side).
  
  Lastly, sometimes (generally when hiking, because I need it to handle cactus spines - mainly cholla chunks), I carry an assisted opening blade clipped inside my left front pocket - a Benchmade Barrage, or my Kershaw Volt, which is ambidextrous.
  
  I have this fear of someone grabbing at my firearm, which is, when carried, always carried concealed. This frees up my right arm to fight off Mr. Grabbypants and secure the gun, and my left hand can go for the knife to make my point in a somewhat more strident manner, if necessary.
  
  All of this took years to work out.
  
  
  
  

Most everyone here is going to advise against getting a focusable beam - unless you think its really necessary to have, a flashlight with a decent spill and a good hotspot is likely to serve you better. Again I would like to put forward the WOWTAC A1S for your consideration. It outputs over 1000 lumens in the "Cool White" tint, which is absolutely blinding and will easily light up just about anything you need it to on turbo. It has a simple two-switch UI that is very intuitive to master, and it comes with a USB rechargable 18650 cell so you don't have to worry about grabbing one separately with a charger. The A1S is not a thoroughly compact light, but it is small enough to slip into a pocket comfortably (I EDC mine happily) and I think will satisfy everything you need it to do.

If you are dead set on having a 'zoomie', there is the WOWTAC A3S. Like the A1S it comes with a battery, but it does not have the two-switch interface and is much, much wider. This is a backpack or jacket pocket light, not something you can slip into the pocket of your jeans.

Both of these lights are a good place to start, and at $30 either will blow away most any other budget light. They are also "technically supported by ThruNite", which is a fantastic manufacturer and well respected on this sub. If these are somehow not enough for you, you can look into higher output flashlights like Emisar makes - but these lights are not for beginners. Using one wrong means you can detonate a cell or set yourself on fire. Be patient and think about what you really need out of your lights before jumping into the deep end.

Seriously, now is the time to get your house in order. While I question the credibility of the various leaks regarding BLM's intention to instigate martial law this summer, I wouldn't be surprised if things got a little "awkward" out in the world. That said, aside from the weapons and ammunition talked about it would be a good idea for everybody to have some basics on hand to make yourselves a bit more self-sufficient. Whether anything happens, it's good insurance for any sort of disruption however big or small.

Water: Every time you go to the grocery store, grab a couple of those 1 gallon water bottles. They are like 85 cents. Do this until you have about 12-15 of these. If you have the room, look into larger 5-10 gallon containers. I personally have about 72 gallons of water on hand.

Food: Pick up non-perishable foods that can be eaten with little to no preparation. Just last week they had Progresso Chicken Soup for $0.79 a can so I grabbed a case of 12. That's dinner for 12 days. Energy bars, oats, whatever.

Gasoline: Keep a full tank in your car and never let it get below half a tank. I also keep three 5-gallon containers of gas at my house just in case (which I rotate annually).

Cash: Have cash on hand locked up in a safe or some secure area. I keep about $500 cash in various bills.

I could go on and on. I'm always amazed at how ill-prepared most of my friends are. But if there was ever a problem (power outage, natural disaster, civil unrest) it's nice to have a buffer of water, food, lighting, etc so that you're not as reliant on the infrastructure as the next guy.

There are plenty of astronomers who disagree with red light. Here is one. He even recommends green however that essay was written before white LEDs were commonly available. This one isn't from an astronomer but has good info.

For you I think the Zebralight H53Fc would be a good choice. Also on amazon. It can use AAs. It can be used as either a hands free headlamp or a pocketable flashlight. It is neutral white for less eye fatigue. It is high CRI for more accurate colors. It has extremely good low modes: 0.01 lumens, 0.06 lumens, 0.26 lumens, 1 lumen. 0.01 lumens is so absurdly low and good at preserving night vision. You can directly look into it from an inch away and not be adversely effected.

Play night golf in backyard course few times/week and tried almost everything.

-Glow discs vs lights vs tape, generally the lights will be the best option, and generally by a large margin. Discs are ok if open field, tape is meh, but lights work in any environment, and even when buried in long grass. It's actually easier to find a disc with a light in 2 foot grass at night than during the day.

-Glow discs themselves, if it isn't Kastaplast, it doesn't actually glow worth a shit, don't bother.

The Olight S2 has a side switch, and I know many people enjoy their products. I don't have any experience with Olight, but take a look at the Amazon link, and the product page on their website, and see what you think.

For a battery, I'm not sure if Olight has low voltage protection on their flashlights (and hopefully someone else can chime in on this), so if it does, Sanyo NCR18650GA batteries are on sale at IMR. If not, a protected cell will be a good idea.

For a charger, the Thrunite C2 is pretty good, with the ability to act as a powerbank and a charger, and it also comes with its own protected cell. If you don't feel any need to have more than one 18650, just get this, and you get the charger and the cell for $16.

EDIT: Oh, shoot, I totally forgot about the Emisar D4. It's not currently in stock on MTN Electronics, but it's a good light. Take a read-through on ToyKeeper's review that u/Ratus_ posted.

You are basically in for the entire forum to show up and try to talk you out of the zoom lens. They really don't get much in the way of love around here. Most of the lights you'll see recommended (and the A6 in particular, which is a really incredible light) have a balanced mixture of flood and throw. There is a central hot spot that throws a significant distance, surrounded by a spill of light that neatly floods out, it basically encompasses the whole range of zoom. If you need a dedicated thrower, get one of those, or a dedicated flooder, get one of those. A zoomie basically tries to do both, and sucks at everything. Additionally, there really isn't a good way to waterproof one, so they tend to be far less robust than most of the other lights on the market, as well as being far less efficient in the amount of light that they actually put out. The BLF A6 would be a great option, as would a Wowtac A1s, which comes with a battery so it's ready to go. Spending a bit more a Thrunite Neutron 2C is another great choice.

If you absolutely, positively, no buts about it think that all of these nerds who spend an utterly absurd amount of time on the subject of flashlights couldn't possibly be right, and you, come hell or high water, are going to be ordering a zoomie no matter what we tell you, the Wowtac A3s sucks considerably less than the one you have.

Going by the rest of the stuff you carry i'd say a small AAA light that you can either attach to your keys or clip inside a pocket.

A couple of recommendations:

To clip on to keys: The Olight i3 EOS. 1xAAA 90 lumens, 45min runtime. Simple twist on/off, one mode, plenty bright for most daily stuff. If you want something multi-mode still good for your keys, the Thrunite Ti3 and Lumintop AAA Tool are honourable mentions too.

To clip to your pocket: The Streamlight Microstream. 1xAAA 45 lumens, 2.5hr runtime. Solid pocket clip and push-button that lends itself to be a really good momentary light but can be clicked on for continuous use. Really solid light, inexpensive, Tried and trusted by a lot of the EDC community. Honourable mention goes to the Streamlight Stylus Pro. Almost the exact same light but longer. 2xAAA, 90 lumens, 6 hour runtime if you don't mind the weight of an extra AAA on you.

Are you opposed to rechargeable batteries? Something that uses an 18650 will be a lot brighter and give you better battery life.

Here are a couple of options, option one is brighter and has a little tighter hot spot. You also get a choice of what color temp you want. It will take 2 weeks to a month to arrive. Option two isn't quite as bright but it's still a nice light, it's big benefits are that it has a magnetic tail cap which can be nice, and the clip faces the other way so if you wear a hat you can use it like a headlamp. You'll have it in a week or less.

Do you use a UV flashlight? Those are awesome if not. I bought a badass one on Amazon that really helps compared to the one I had before that I got at Circle K.

I've tried anything from sprays, to a screwdriver duct-taped to a stick. I find just using a regular stick can get in the rocks pretty well and handle it. Having the powerful flashlight helps too because you can see them from across the yard.

Also, having someone spray for scorpions monthly does wonders. When I moved in my house, I could easily get 5-10 per night. I've had my house sprayed ever since then, and I haven't seen one in two years.

If you really want a zoomie, check out the Wowtac A3S, but we tend to recommend fixed-focus lights for most applications. They're more durable, more waterproof, and have more efficient optics. The duty lights section of the arbitrary list of popular lights has some options that may work well for security work.

I would recommend the Gerber Artifact over the Shard. They are essentially the same tool but the Artifact has a built in x-acto blade holder for small cutting tasks. It’s great for tape or anything that would gum up another knife. Also, I would get a light that uses a AA or AAA battery as they are easier to come by then the button cells in the Streamlight Nano (I am currently using a Fenix E01 and it’s a great little light)

I'm a bit late, but here are some (pretty fuzzy) pictures I got from hunting them a while back with one of those UV Flashlights. They glow a bright greenish color!

I'm in north west Phoenix and I don't see them too often in the house, but look around on the walls of your residence at night with a UV light/blacklight - I'm sure you'll find at least one or two of them just hanging out. You can find good flashlights for under 15$ on Amazon

You can find some of those rubber-coated tongs (or ice cube tongs) at the dollar store if you want something to safely relocate them elsewhere.

For a replacement to that Maglight, even something like the Streamlight Microstream would be an improvement. A Nitecore tube would be a decent replacement as well, with the added ability to throw it on your keys instead of putting it in your pocket.

If you want to really improve your abilities, something like the Olight S1 Baton with rechargeable Rcr123a batteries or a S10R bundle would be smaller than that maglight and a TON brighter. Of course there is also the S20 Baton that runs 18650 batteries, but it's thicker than, but maybe not as long, as the maglight you've pictured.

Those last options are a bit pricey to start with, but are worth it, and will save some money in batteries over time, if you're running disposable AA in your current setup.

I really like my Maglight XL-50, it's a great light for 30$. People here don't like it too much as it is AAA and apparently the driver or led isn't top notch, but I have had this for four years now and still love it. The Olight S2 is generally considered a much better light, and seriously you would want to invest in one that uses 18650s instead of AA or AAA as they aren't even expensive and have lots of benefits.

We're all so glad you asked. Those flashlights have awful build quality.

You mentioned wanting a zoomable light. These are, by nature, larger than non-zoomable lights. The best $30 zoomable light is a Wowtac A3S. It also comes with an 18650 cell, and that cell has built-in micro USB charging. It's the complete package.

18650s are really the way to go. Most of the options in the $20-$30 range are from Wowtac, a great brand that sells lights that come with batteries. The build quality of these will be much better than that of the light you owned before.
If you want something smaller, you can always buy some rechargeable NiMH AAs. Eneloop, AmazonBasics, and IKEA's batteries are all good brands.

If you really do want to buy another one of those flashlights that you had before, you can buy some that are just rebranded versions of the same base light here.

Definitely spring for a good flashlight. Cheap lights that put off yellowed light are so aggravating, and it's amazing the difference a good flashlight makes if you go camping/anything outdoors at night. My dad has gotten really into flashlights and got us each one of these Fenix brand lights, and they're the brightest flashlights I've ever seen, and can be dimmed down for jobs that need less light.

If you observe where they’re running to and from that’s where you’d have the best luck with traps. You can also use a UV light to spot their urine trail and place the traps directly on that trail. Rodents are creatures of habit and, like ants, follow a certain and specific pathway.

I’ve used glue traps and bait them with peanut butter or dried shrimp(I realize many people don’t have dried shrimp so anything pungent smelling will do) and it’s worked pretty well.

Fenix PD35

Finding good flashlights is an odd little passion that I have. Of all the lights I've bought throughout the years, this is by far the best balance between performance, lifetime, and cost.

EDIT: I know this isn't technically a lantern, but it is more than capable of doing the job (moreso than most cheap lanterns, I'd say). Also, It can be used outside of camping. I keep one in my desk and another one stowed away in my car. It is extremely handy during the night if I need a light source.




Notable Features:

• 4 brightness settings; the highest one being as bright as my jeep's headlamps. you can practically light up an entire section of a forest with it. edit: this is a pretty accurate picture of how it performs.
  
  
• Strobe mode (I never really use it though)
  
  
• Full metal casing - It is extremely durable. Only time I broke the LED is when I accidentally dropped it 12 feet off a ledge onto concrete.
  
  
• Water resistant - I've gone swimming with it several times with no negative repercussions.
  
  
• Diffuser tip - This is the "lamp" part of the flashlight. with it on, you can easily illuminate a large room. Not to mention you feel like harry potter using that lighty wand spell, too.
  
  
• Rechargeable battery and charger. I highly recommend you buy these, as the batteries this brand uses are not so common.

Get yourself a very bright flashlight with a crenellated bezel, something like the Fenix PD35

It is small enough to fit in your pants pocket and clip in. The light, at the brightest setting, will temporarily blind anyone you point it at. It's bright enough that it will hurt. The crenellated bezel is intended for things like smashing through glass but can also be used for self defense.

Leave the flashlight on its brightest setting when you're walking around, learn to pull it out quickly and thumb the switch. It should buy you enough time to get yourself out of that situation (or hit them if you are truly fearful for your life).

Plus now you have a nice flashlight for everyday use.

This is a fun idea.

The Shard does so much for so little, and the Fenix is a very reliable, functional flashlight (with the added bonus of using easy-to-replace AAA batteries).

Assuming you don't carry a separate knife:

Leatherman Style CS - $16.79

Generic button cell light - $3-$4 at Walmart or wherever

Total: $20.79 (assuming the $4 price on the button light, it's a little over, but you can probably find one for $3 if you look)

OR

Victorinox Rally - $11.60

LRI Photon II - $8.27

Total: $19.87

This kinda depends on your needs. The Style functions better as a knife than the Rally (in my opinion), and offers essentially the same tools plus a great pair of scissors. But in return, you sacrifice a little in terms of your light. Personally I'd opt for the Style + generic.

IMO, 1AAA lights are the best option for EDC. Ranging anywhere from like 50-150 lumens, and both small and light. The Olight I3E is a great option, or the ITP EOS A3 which seems to be the basis of the Maratac AAA, my favorite little EDC light.

I think a lot of EDCers have adapted their thinking on what is practical to carry. :-) But you can get a AAA LED that throws a ton of lumens for ~$20. Here is one, and here is another. I carry an ARC-P and own both of the above. They are so unobtrusive, that I can't imagine how they aren't practical to toss on a keychain or just with your loose change or wallet.

It has saved me on numerous occasions: many power outages (calmed down the little ones in a hotel that went pitch black), elevator stall, checking a car engine, crawling under a desk to fix a computer at my brother's. I have also used them while night running (fit perfectly in your hand without you noticing) and like most EDC, it's something I think would be valuable in a serious situation.

Looks like you got everything you need! Maybe add in a little light! You can get a cheap, small yet powerful Olight that will be super handy! You would be amazed what having the power of light will do for you when you need it!

If you specifically need the ability to focus the light down to a small spot, with little or no spill light around said spot, you're going to have a hard time reaching 1,000 lumens. The optics used in that type of focusing mechanism are only about 20% efficient at full zoom, which makes 1,000 lumens of output almost impossible in that configuration.

The Wowtac A3S and the more expensive but better-built Brinyte B158 are the only lights I know of that come anywhere close to your requirements, but both will only produce anything like 1,000 lumens on the full wide-angle setting. Once you focus it down to a spot you'll be working with more like 250-300 lumens. Physics is a harsh mistress sometimes. If you need the output for maximum long-range performance, you'll be much better served by something with a reflector (which is about 80% efficient instead of 20%).

Just get it here then.

I have this Fenix as my keychain light, and it's excellent quality for such a tiny form factor. it's fairly bright, though not nearly as much as the eagletac mentioned above. however, if budget isn't really an issue, I can't recommend the Muyshondt Aeon enough. [this review] explains how it's basically the perfect EDC light when budget isn't an obstacle.

I bought this guy for curing loca glue. I just rigged up a cardboard box with a small hole on top for the flashlight to poke it's head in and set it all over my phone's screen. Of course sun ray's have UV rays, but it's always nice to eliminate another variable :) Like another guy said, if it isn't too your liking, you can just peel it off with some isopropyl, friction, plastic razorblades, goo gone, etc.

You have to get a special flashlight and use it before each throw. Usually people who play at night also use small leds taped to the bottom of the disc for better vision

Both should run fine with plain old Duracell, Energizer, etc. AAAs from any store. The E05 is a much brighter light and what I'd pick.

Unfortunately it looks like there are old and new versions of the Fenix E05. The newest ones like this are 85 lumens and the older ones like this are 26 lumens. You probably want the newer, 85 lumen model that's even brighter.

I know you asked for an 18650 torch, but I picked up this little guy, and love it. It sits in one of the pen slots on my NWUs perfectly so it's always there when I need it!

I previously carried the Olight i3e and loved it. Very small, AAA, and very bright.
I thought I lost it, and was gifted the Olight S1R as a replacement. I've since found my i3e, but I still carry the S1R instead - it is an amazing little flashlight.

When I worked on oil rigs in Saudi Arabia, I used these often at night. They were unreasonably bright. They last long enough on a single battery that I wasn't really that worried about it. I did have a battery charger with extra batteries onsite.

This was back in 2015, there are probably upgraded versions on the market now (brighter/longer lasting). Also a slightly larger form factor could fit additional batteries.

Back when I got these, they were 96 lumens, then 120 lumens. Now they are upgraded to 150 lumens. I guess they're using the Cree XP-G2 LED these days, and a cursory search shows this LED is available in lots of flashlights with many form factors. I'd recommend it.

They're tiny, but that was a plus in my book. With LED's, size no longer correlates to brightness in any meaningful way.

If you really want a fancy one, look for an LED with a high "Color Rendering Index". That will be more difficult to find. But the light will show you corrosion/small leaks, etc much better.

cellphone lights drain your battery really fast, and dont illuminate nearly as well as a proper flashlight

Fenix E05. An updated version of the E01 (which is still a great choice). I have the E01 on my keychain for years, and even though the output is only 10 lumens, you have to weigh what you are looking for in a keychain light. Chances are its going to be used for simple little tasks like lighting up keyholes at night, looking around in the car, etc. A single AAA gives an enormous runtime, so you can keep it on your keys and forget about it. I have changed the battery once in the 2+ years I have had it. The E05 gives you 27 lumens for 3 hours, and the E01 will give you 10 lumens for 21 hours (vendor ratings). Also, the E01 is only 12$ on amazon. Can't hurt to try it out before you decide you want something more expensive.

Yeah, I always bring a UV flashlight with me for glow rounds. Definitely does depend on the plastic type/color how much it glows, but with the right discs it makes finding your discs at night a non-issue. You can even sometimes find some others that were lost during the day that were well hidden, but glow at night. I use this one, for $10 it works great.

• Keychain knife -- comes in handy more than you'd think. There's a full range of styles and prices. Great for opening Amazon boxes!
  
  
• Keychain flashlight. But, I prefer an $11 Fenix E01 because it takes a single AAA battery (I use rechargeables) instead of a special format smaller battery.
  
  Think of an accessory and it may come in keychain form... pen, scissors, etc.

  The sheath has a narrow pocket behind where the leatherman goes. It is meant for an extra set of bits for the screwdriver. The Gerber knife fits in there really well. As I said I can't remember any lights under $50 that have a port on the light itself. If you're willing to spend a bit more the Thrunite TC12 is definitely the better light, and has a USB port. Again I'd recommend the neutral white (NW) version.

Keep it light, keep it simple.

 

• Knife: CRKT Squit ($16)
  
  This small knife does the job without taking up much bulk in your pocket or EDC. And if you misplace it, it won't cost an arm and a leg to replace.
  
  
• Light: Olight i3E ($10)
  
  This light is fairly bright and is easy to use. Twist on/off. No fancy modes with this light. Waterproof and shock resistant in a compact package that runs on just a AAA battery. Also easy to replace if it mysteriously disappears.
  
  
• Pen: Pilot G2 ($11 for 12 pack, around $1 per pen)
  
  This pen doesn't need much of a story. It's cheap. It writes smooth. It conquers.
  
  
• Watch: Casio W800H-1AV ($12)
  
  This is a nice little watch for the price. It's tough and tells the time even in harsh conditions. If you somehow manage to break it or the battery dies, it's not going to break the bank to replace.
  
   
  
  Don't carry much in the wallet department so a rubber band or binder clip would do the job. That'd be less than $0.10. Do the math!

I use this light to test the glow on my pops. Originally bought it to repair surfboards (UV cure resin)

It's also fun to shine on pops that aren't GitD. You'd be surprised at what pops fluoresce brightly under UV.

I probably won't win with 500 entries, but I just want to say it's awesome of you to do this giveaway.

Okay, I've killed hundreds of scorpions on my property and have developed a technique that works.

First, you need to prep the battle area. Buy some Cy-Kick concetrated spray and a sprayer to use it with. Hit any cracks, baseboards, entry ways, and places where you've definitely seen them. This will only occasionally kill them, but it definitely softens them up.

Next up, get a UV/Blacklight flashlight. Scorpions glow very brightly in the dark when you shine this on them. Then, have two tools for killing them on hand:

1. A stick. Some kind of stick that's two feet long or so and maybe an inch wide at most. Scorpions have a habit of staying still when the lights are off thinking that you can't see them (which is true if you don't have a UV light) and so you can easily position the stick above them and then squish it! It's very satisfying.
   
   
2. Terro Scorpion Spray. Sometimes the scorpions will be in a place where the stick can't get to and in those cases the Terro spray is needed. Spray a liberal amount directly on the scorpion and it will die in the next few minutes. It's not instant but it will eventually work. It also looks like the scorpion suffers when using the spray, which I also find satisfying (I hate them so much).
   
   I go on roughly weekly hunts during the summer and those techniques have proved to be very effective.
   
   Don't bother with a blow torch. They will almost surely get away in time. The stick and spray is a much more reliable method.
   
   And don't worry about getting too close. They don't move very fast (relatively speaking) and I've never seen one that will attack -- they just try to hide, if they know you see them. Wear sturdy shoes and have your UV light, stick, and spray on hand and you're practically a scorpion killing machine.

Since you say "Does NOT need to be an awesome throwy search light, as tempting as that is." I'm assuming you want a light with a bit more throw...

If the size and weight are acceptable, the Convoy C8+ is going to be hard to beat.

If you want something a bit more slim, the ThruNite TN-12, WowTac A1S, Emisar D1, or the Nitecore P12 are decent options.

I've been carrying one of these for more than a year and I've been pleased. I think it's a great keychain light although I'm not a big fan of the included keychain clip but that is easy enough to replace. Hard to beat for $20.

I suggest you take a look at Eneloops - basically rechargeable batteries. They've come a long way and give you more options: this way, any AAA flashlight becomes feasible, rather than that is already rechargeable.

Second, Parametrek is spot on - a firefly mode is what you want. That is the one I have. It might not be the best but it works incredibly well at lighting my glow discs and it fits in my pocket. I have 4 glow discs in my bedroom that I nuke right before bed and it’s been an hour and my 2 USDGC Firebirds are still glowing from around a 5 second charge and my new glow Vibram disc is quite visible as well.

I'm actually trying to decide on a light to just leave in my vehicle. I've narrowed it down to an Olight S10, S20, or a Nitecore EC20. The Olights listed have a magnet in the bottom cap, and the S10 is small enough to clip onto the bill of a hat. But I really like the range of the Nitecore EC20.


Those are all around $40. People will probably start suggesting a Nitecore P12 or a Fenix PD35 for you. They are in your price range and very bright.



If you don't need the light now, or even very soon, you could order the P12 from Amazon for $47.11 right now but there's no telling when it will ship. That is a very good price based on my research.
