>Atactical A1
>TN12
>TH10
>Fenix PD35
>Fenix PD35 (2014)
>BLF Combo
I would easily suggest the Thrunite TN12 over the PD35 because it's available in a Neutral White tint and has a moonlight mode which is a minimum requirement for what I want in a light. (Both lights have great mode spacing, nearly identical beam patterns, and nearly identical outputs.) If those requirements of mind don't matter to you though then the PD35 will have a little better build quality. There's built-in rechargeable versions of these lights as well, the TC12 & UC35. (Avoid the PD35 2014 version overall.)
The BLF A6 is a great budget light. The QC isn't quite as good as the two brands above but it's a great light for those who want something bright without going broke for the week.
The Atactical A1 is a new & interesting light. Not quite as bright as the others but it looks like it could make a good budget light. Looking at this review, it's interesting how much it looks like Thrunite which it seems like it's actually made by Thrunite based off the beginning portion of the review. Honestly seems like a pretty good light minus it being only a Cool White tint. I didn't realize how cheap it is to get until I saw your link. I might start recommending it more often.
The TH10 isn't bad but it is on the larger size of single 18650 headlamps. Should provide a good throw while having usable spill. Definitely not a great light for close up hands-on work due to the focused beam but seems alright for your needs. I'm just wondering how front heavy it is. The Nitecore HC30 or HC50 might be a little better option though than the TH10.
>Edit: Maybe a Klaurus light might work too? Hoping someone has some recommendation on this. It's USB rechargable I believe so that's a plus for me.
It's certainly a great light but certainly on the larger size as well. Definitely not pocket friendly. Or not at least with the pants that I wear. Cargo pants pocket might be fine though. You'll be blown away by how bright this guy is.
How loose/tight-fitting is your clothing, and how much do your pockets show beneath your shirt? That's going to affect how large the light can be before you or others notice it. For some people and their style of dress, a light that runs on an 18650 battery wouldn't be noticeable, while others would need a AA or even AAA sized light.
AAA/10440 Lights
If you're interested in not having the light visibly print in your pocket at all, like I was in choosing an EDC, and your clothes are relatively slim fitting, you're probably going to want a AAA/10440 sized light (10440 is the lithium ion version of a AAA sized battery, and produces brighter output but less runtime than a typical AAA alkaline, NiMH, or lithium primary battery).
I went with the Folomov EDC C1. It's got a coated brass body, warm light, and very high CRI (meaning it helps show colors better than low CRI lights). It clips tightly inside the front pocket or coin pocket and takes up very little space. I've been very much enjoying mine without issue, though others have had quality control issues where the emitter burnt out or developed a dead spot, so unless those issues are sorted out, your mileage may vary.
If you want something in the AAA size specifically from Amazon, the Ultratac K18 would probably serve you quite well.
AA/14500 Lights
If you're willing to go up to AA/14500 sized light, the Thrunite Archer 1A V3 might be a good choice. Runs on either AA or 14500 battery. Has a sub-lumen firefly mode for preserving night vision, and goes up to 200 lumens with a AA battery. I don't know how much brighter it would be with a 14500 battery, but you can typically expect two to three times brighter, though with shorter run times. 200 lumens is typically enough for most tasks, though you might appreciate the extra brightness if you were looking around outdoors.
18650 Lights
If you're willing to go up to an 18650 sized light, the Thrunite TC15 would likely be a great choice. It gets incredibly bright for a 1x 18650 light, at up to 2300 lumens, but has well spaced lower modes for everyday use as well. It looks like currently only the cool white version is available on Amazon it. Most people, myself included, prefer neutral to warm white because it looks better, and produces less backscatter in particulates in the air.
I think a little more information about your intended use of the light and how you'd like to carry it would help us make good recommendations. Good luck on the search!
EDIT: Also, another user asked a good question about what you mean by "rechargeable." Do you mean that you just plug the light in without taking the battery out, or do you mean the battery is rechargeable and you can put it in a charger? There are plenty of excellent chargers at places like illumn.com that will open up a whole new realm of possibilities for flashlights, so the small up-front investment is usually worth it.
There is a recommendation form in the sidebar we often ask people to fill out and make a top-level post, a lot of us enjoy helping match people to lights. It has info about size, use case, budget, etc.
I don’t know what your budget is, but for size I’m going to recommend a light that uses a single 18650 size rechargeable lithium battery. It’s a nice size to hold in the hand, and the batteries are a really good balance of size to power. They get about 500 recharge cycles, usually cost about $5, and hold the equivalent energy of 5 AA or 8 AAA cells. Since I don’t expect you to have any of these batteries, I’ll give you three good options that include them, and everything you need to run the light.
The cheapest good light that includes a battery is a Wowtac A1s. It’s probably the most-recommended beginner light on here and would serve you quite well. It comes with a special battery that has a micro-usb port built directly in. I don’t know how you could beat it for $26.
A couple dollars more gets you a Sofirn SP32. It has a good user interface with a single side e-switch (which makes it shorter, compared to the Wowtac with its tailswitch) illuminated switch to find it in the dark, and is currently on sale to bring it down to your price point. It uses a more traditional style of battery with an external charger.
For a bit of an upgrade, the Thrunite Neutron 2C is a good value. It has a built-in charging port so you never have to touch the battery, and a nice ramping interface, where instead of set light levels it increases or decreases until you get exactly how much you want.
Hope one of these helps, feel free to ask more questions here or make a whole new thread to get more community input.
Alright, that at least gives us a little more information. Seems that you want a light for general lumen cannon work, right? Something with a big battery and a large head that can light things up for as far as you need to see?
I like recommending Convoy lights due to their quality for their cost. The L2 will carry very similarly to your Maglite, with its wide and robust head and long handle. The one I linked has a CREE XHP50.2, which is a larger LED that should give you a ton of light out the front in a decently wide area while maintaining good throw (in case someone makes a run for it). These should slot well into a Maglite ring holster and hang from your belt. The L2 can run on either one or two 18650 or 26650 cells (the latter are recommended for their capacity and better fitment) and you will get plenty of runtime out of it provided you don't use Turbo all night. If you go for this, I am a big fan of the 4000K color temperature range, though others may chime in with different opinions.
Convoy also makes a decent holster for their C8-style lights, and so I will suggest the Luminus SST-40 version of their C8+. The C8-style chassis has been around forever, so new bits and mods are available for super cheap. Like the XHP50.2, the SST-40 is a larger and floodier LED. In order to make this a better general-purpose light, you might want to drop an orange peel reflector into this guy. It'll take one 18650 cell, but backups are easy to carry and swap in the field.
In the event you want something smaller I am a fan of dual-switch 18650 lights. The Wowtac A1S BSS v2 has been in my pocket for a year now and never let me down. The interface is awesome - you can adjust modes using the side button when the light is on, or a quick double tap on the tail switch from off takes you right to turbo. Super handy when you need a lot of light quickly. I cannot suggest a holster for this outright, although I am certain Streamlight or Fenix will make a holster that will fit it brilliantly.
In that vein, the Fenix PD35 and Streamlight ProTac 2L-X are both of similar size and very popular with law enforcement, but for far more than the Wowtac.
If you need more advice or can narrow down what you will be doing with the light I am happy to answer any questions you have!
I received compensation from Sofirn in exchange for writing this review, but am in no way influenced and wish to provide an unbiased review.

The light is the SP31 V2.0 with XP-L HI in neutral white
First off the packaging is fairly basic. It was a simple Sofirn box without many markings on it to even indicate what kind of light was inside. They just reuse similar packaging across their lights which is fine. I got the combo that includes a battery + 1 bay charger. Came with an instruction manual and fairly standard lanyard, nothing special here.
Next to my smaller 18650 lights such as the Emisar D4 or Jaxman E2L it seems kinda big, but after a day of carrying it there's no issue. I would like to take this moment to praise Sofirn's pocket clip. I personally strongly detest the "deep carry" pocket clips on lights such as the BLF A6 and prefer a simple more robust clip like Sofirn uses that doesn't raise up passed the tailcap. Something about this light that REALLY bugs me is the tailswitch protrudes beyond the lanyard bumps which WILL NOT allow it to tail stand. If you find yourself tailstanding your lights a lot, this may not be for you and is honestly the largest fault I have physically with this light.
Now on to usability and functionality. I really like the forward-clicky switch.I can definitely see why people prefer these. It's very easy to just soft hold it down when you only need a brief burst of light vs needing to fully depress a typical switch. It's honestly not a big deal, but for convenience sake if you're often only using a light to read or check things in short bursts I would recommend a forward clicky. This light has a secondary electronic towards the front and that's solely for changing modes. I also underestimated how nice it is to always have the light turn on at the same brightness I last used, no surprises, just consistency. You can find a brightness you prefer and just only use that. It's simple click to cycle through modes 1-5 then long-press to access strobe/SOS. My only gripe is there is no shortcut to turbo or the lowest mode. The modes also cycle with a fast smooth ramp which is pleasant.
Next is brightness and my thoughts on beam shape. I clocked the light in at level 1(7), level 2(53), level 3(151), level 4(477), level 5(985). This is mostly in-line with what Sofirn claims except for the max brightness of 1200 lumens that they tout. I tested on their own included cell at max brightness and even a Sony VTC5, but wasn't able to crack 1,000 lumens in my tests. As far as throw I can only really speak relative to my other lights and it's certainly throwier than a stock BLF A6 with OP reflector by about 25%~. I was also surprised it out throws Sofirn's own SF36W which has a sizably large reflector(but with XP-L not XP-L HI). The light is definitely throwier than I thought it would be for such a small reflector. You won't be breaking any records, but the hotspot is tight and the spill isn't extremely bright so you could use this to point out things or focus on objects at distances within 65ft/20M. As for tint it's not offensively cool at all, but is a bit cooler than I personally prefer. The positive is that with the XP=L HI there is very little tint shift so it's evenly white lacking an "egg-yolk" corona that I see with a lot of XP-L lights.
Runtimes.. I don't really have much to say here. The max-level stepdown is timed, but there is also mention of thermal sensing? After around 3 minutes at step down the head of the light was only 112F/44C and was still very holdable. It continued at this level for a little over 2 hours until it dropped down briefly before dropping again twice in 20min intervals. The light's indicator LED in the e-switch was full red indicating voltage was low and the output was quite low so I ended the test woth the cell at 3.06 volts. The red indicator turns on below 3.1V and shuts the light off entirely at 3V says the manual.
As per usual I tested the waterproofness lightly. I submerged the light in a little over 1ft/30cm of water for 2 hours exactly and there were no issues this time around. The head seems sealed/glued and I cannot get into it which probably adds to the waterproofness. The o-rings came lubed well and stopped all water ingress. There was no problem with the e-switch either. The only possible problem might be water sneaking around the tail switch boot, but I took a look inside and it was still dry. It passed my test no problem.
My brief thoughts on the charger... It works. Charges around what seems to be 0.5A with a standard micro USB jack. The cell voltage read 4.15V at completion which is good with me. Much rather slightly undercharge than overcharge and damage a cell's life.
Final thoughts... I can see why a lot of people like the forward clicky + e-switch combination. It's very predictable and you don't have to worry about accessing random turbo or strobes. I'm not a big fan of throwers, but the XP-L HI provides very little tint shift and solid throw in a small package. The numbers I tested at max brightness are a little off, but those extra 200 lumens are negligible in my opinion and the light is more than capable at medium ranges even on levels 3 or 4. I really wish the light could tailstand correctly I'm not sure if forward clicky switches are just larger and that wasn't taken into account, or perhaps the switch boot is just too thick where it depresses the switch. Overall if you're looking for a basic starter light with a no-frills predictable modeset, compact throw, and comes with a battery/charger to start an 18650 eco system I'd definitely recommend this light.

For my literally carry on my person at all times kit:
However, I also bring my backpack with me to and from work everyday, and if we're heading out adventuring for the day I'll chuck it in my trunk just to have it. I'm not sure I'll get everything here, but I'll toss in what I can remember off of the top of my head.
That stuff usually gets toted around with me just about everywhere, though not always directly on my person. Depending on the season or event I'll add or remove items as needed.
Some people have some good information here but I'll throw my 2 cents in anyways.
>a bit of self defense
Flashlights are no better for self defense than sturdy sticks - it's not what they were designed for. Some companies put 'tacticool' strike bezels on their flashlights, like the Wowtac A1S BSS TAC, but it's kind of ridiculous. If you really need to defend yourself, pepper spray will do a much better job as long as it's legal where you live.
>NOT tiny
18650 pushes what can fit in a standard pocket, unless you're wearing cargo pants. Most lights using these batteries have a good amount of heft already, so I'd strongly recommend trying one of the single battery recommendations in this thread.
>Somewhat waterproof
As previously stated by others, zooming lights suck at being waterproof and add a lot of weight. They aren't our favorite around here.
>Adjustable high power beam
Even though most lights recommended here don't zoom, the brightness is adjustable. Lower moonlight modes are perfect for tasks that are close up and indoor use without waking anyone, and high modes throw a long way.
>Minimal spill
Spill is a good thing in a lot of cases. When I go hiking at night, the hotspot shines far down the path and the spill illuminates at my feet so I don't trip and to the sides so I still have some peripheral vision. Perfect for watching out for those rogue raccoons.
RECOMMENDATION
The first 18650 light I got, based on a recommendation here, was the Astrolux S1. It's way under your budget, throws quite far for it's size, and has a really solid build. It's waterproof, and if you absolutely insist on bludgeoning someone with it I'm sure it will hurt. Most people prefer the 3D tint option, which is a neutral tint that's not too warm or too cool. Here is a beamshot to give you an idea of the throw and spill from this light. It doesn't have built in charging, but that really helps keep it waterproof. If you pick up two 18650s, they will easily last you a weekend camping trip even with extremely liberal use.
This is a great tube light to start off with. I find it perfect for hiking, and it has given me an idea of how high-performance lights work and what I want/don't want in my next lights.
Left to Right, mostly:
Green Cards - I switch this out with other cards pretty regularly, but it matched today. ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01ESWPAKU/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_apa_i_R-0TDbZEN6C0N )
Slim Wallet - It's super thin and it attaches to my phone. ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07P4J55NV/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_9msGDb54PTKM2 )
Watch - It's durable and in my opinion doesn't look too bad for the price. ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009KYJAJY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_BosGDbN06048V )
Wireless Earbuds - They are dated so they aren't the best anymore, but they are still pretty good. ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07582VVJR/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_QnCDDbV5X5EQY )
Multitool - It doesn't have a knife so I take this to school. It's not the best, but it does small things great. ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0058RX9NU/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_Rc1TDbRPMMDB0 )
Flashlight - For the size, it is really bright. It doesn't last forever, but it is rechargeable. I recommend it for something small. ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GQRJLDP/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_6g1TDb65T465P )
Knife - This sub knows this knife. ( https://www.bladehq.com/item--Benchmade-Bugout-AXIS-Lock-Knife--98607 )
Necklace - Totally normal carbon fiber dog tag. ( https://www.bladehq.com/item--Spyderco-Panchenko-Dog-Tag-Folder--29966 )
If anyone has any questions about any of this stuff, leave a comment and I'll do my best to respond. To clarify, the knife goes in my pocket and I put on the necklace after school.
Thanks for taking the time to check out my post! Have a good rest of your day everyone!
That's pretty vague, so I'll just recommend the ThruNite T10. It's well built, made by a reputable company, and probably bright enough for whatever you need it for. It won't be able to achieve maximum brightness without using rechargeable Ni-MH AAs or lithium AAs. Those two types of batteries also have the advantage of not leaking and ruining your flashlight. Eneloops are the favorite brand around here, but the Ni-MH AAs by the big brands are all pretty similar.
If you're comfortable buying a light that uses a (included) lithium ion battery, the Atactical A1 and A1S are good budget models. They both come with batteries. The difference is that the A1S is a bit brighter and comes with a higher capacity battery.
The best light that I can think of in that price range is the ThruNite Neutron 2C V3. It also comes with a battery, and it can charge it without removing the battery. It has a ramping UI. ThruNite is having a 20% off sale on their website, so if you enter that coupon code the price will go down to $40. I suggest the neutral white tint.
Amazon is helpful here. I would advise getting two things: a reliable, bright flashlight, and strong pepper gel.
For the flashlight, I recommend a Streamlight Protac 1L-1AA (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01G75P1SC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_9ia.Bb301STP9) or the Streamlight Protac 2-LX (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06WD29DZ8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_xka.Bb703WW4V).
There are a lot of good lights out there, but these two models are excellent and should meet the needs of most people. The 2-LX is bigger, brighter, and can use rechargeable batteries. However, the 1L-1AA has the advantage of being smaller. Both can easily fit in a pocket or purse.
Here’s a video review if the 2-LX: https://youtu.be/j_7RfUFYblU
Here’s a video comparing the two: https://youtu.be/vythpZUBab8
For the pepper gel, I recommend Sabre Red (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01AT3LMP4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_6ga.BbRKDF9CK). It has good range, is super hot, and this kit comes with a practice unit.
A few other suggestions, of varying cost and practicality:
I had similar issues, but in the IT field (squeezing through server racks, etc). For your specific situation, I would recommend a combination of:

A good tool pouch is critical here. Your problem is that the pocket-sized AA lights are designed to clip into a pocket or pouch, not directly to your belt. If clipping directly to a belt, the clip will get bent out of shape, or else it will squeeze itself off of your belt when the light snags on something.

I like Ripoffs brand because they are super rugged, and designed for daily use in your conditions. The belt clip actually surrounds the belt, so it cannot be pulled off accidentally. I recommend getting a flat, open-ended tool pouch or electrician pouch, for easy reholstering. You don't specifically need a flashlight pouch- it can be anything with the right dimensions. Be wary of 'mini maglite' size, as it may be too skinny.
Models that will likely fit your needs would be:
I understand where you're coming from by wanting to run alkalines in it, but I, along with many others here, would highly recommend a set of Eneloops for regular use. I'm going to assume your reason for wanting an AA-sized light is for the availability of the batteries, which is just fine, but they do have a tendency to leak (although probably not anywhere near as likely as the folks here would have you believe). I own lights that take all sorts of batteries, and for actual "emergency" situations, I keep some Energizer Lithiums handy. They're shelf-stable for a very long time, can handle pretty extreme temperatures, and don't pose any danger to the light. They are fairly expensive for regular use, though, and that's why I tend to use Eneloops.
People have recommended a few good lights, but, from my personal experience, I would say a Thrunite T10 is a solid candidate for what you want. I EDC'd it for a few weeks, and it was pretty good. There isn't any brightness setting between the "low" mode and the "turbo" mode, which was a little annoying for me, but it was still usable. It comes with a diffuser, as well, which makes it very good for emergency lighting. In terms of durability, I haven't thrown it around too much, but the driver and all is glued in pretty solidly (at least on mine), so I'd assume it wouldn't mind a bit of a beating.
Unfortunately, it seems to be sold out on their website, and Amazon only has the cool white version at the moment.
Thanks a lot for the opportunity! New to the sub but yall seem like a great community so far

That reminds me to go dumpster diving myself. I've got a coworker who goes all the time with his wife and I don't know how but they are always scoring a lot of goodies.
Anyway it seems like there are some lights out there many would skip over because of better a little more expensive alternatives, but those lights also seem to fit your needs pretty well so there may not be any need to spend the extra money. One such light is the Wowtac A2S I saw reviewed not too long ago. There's also the A2 for ten bucks cheaper but it's half as bright. It's your basic angled 18650 XP-L headlamp that comes with a battery with the built in microUSB recharging port. Again, not the best light for the price range, not the best included battery, but it sounds like you would get good use from it in an all inclusive package.
Yep. Reversible clips. A little outside your budget but better warranty, build quality and better build. Love my olights! Started with fenix and nitecore (also own a lumintop AA) but olight got me with their sales and customer service. Heres an Amazon link, may be able to shop around a little and find it cheaper.

Usually headlamp that take a single AA battery or a single 18650 battery is the best option. (I prefer AA for camping/hiking and 18650 for night shift work.) The cheapest good headlamp out there is the Wowtac A2 and is my favorite for jobsite stuff. At the other end of the price range the highest quality headlamps are made by Zebralight. I've been very pleased with their H53c.
/r/flashlight can help you find more options.
Get a super bright led flashlight. I use the one below! Really helps a lot! It’s rechargeable and pretty tough!
Anker Super Bright Tactical Flashlight, Rechargeable (18650 Battery Included), Zoomable, IP65 Water-Resistant, 900 Lumens CREE LED, 5 Light Modes for Camping and Hiking, Bolder LC90 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KH2JP5G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_x9t7CbN00RB03
If you are okay sticking with AA that won't accept 14500's, then Zebralight's SC53c or SC5c Mk II are excellent choices.
Lights (according to Parametrek's site that accept both AA and 14500 that might be worth looking into:
Thrunite Archer 1A V3 Neutral White
Fenix LD09 (2015)
Fenix LD11
Olight S1A
Fenix LD12 (2017)
Fenix RC05
Rofis TR15
That should get you started. I don't own any of those suggested lights (though I do own a Zebralight and quite like it). I recommend a neutral white tint (4000-5000K) and ideally high CRI (shows colors better, could be important as an ele-chicken...is that a black or green wire?!)
You'd have to find a stand, but this style of light on Amazon tends to be really good for the price. I have a different one that's out of stock now, but I've dropped it more than a couple times onto concrete from about head height and it's still going strong.
If you want a flashlight, the Thunite T10 is pretty fantastic for the price.
>From the doorway (Turns into a shitshow if I need to go in with lights out and whatnot) I am just looking to see that they are there, and ideally they are alright.
I incorrectly assumed that you had to go in and do a closer check like acute care facilities do.
> my old flashlight that was red was really bright and I'd just shine it on the ceiling and it'd light up the whole room.
With that in mind, the Nitecore I recommended earlier probably won't work for you since the red LED in it is pretty low power. You might be better off getting a Solarforce L2M host (runs 18650, or can run stubby with 18350 with the extension tube removed) and a red LED drop in like this one from KAI Domain.
Or just get a white light that will take a screw in or slip on red filter, like Fenixes linked by u/ImALittleCrackpot. The Wowtac A1S BSS includes a screw in red filter and is complete package for $40.
I hope this helps you find the right light or at least gets you going in the right direction.
Is available on Amazon a hard requirement? Can you estimate "last a long time"? What type of charger do you have and do you have? I ask these questions so the people more knowledgeable than myself (still pretty noobish) can better help you out.
If Amazon is a necessity, the thrunite t10Nw is a nice option that runs on AA and (possibly) supports 14500 for better runtime and higher output.
I recently picked a Lumintop Tool AA 2.0 for many of reasons you describe here.
Looked for something small and light enough that can be attached to a baseball cap, yet, bright enough to be used for camping, night hikes, around the house and on the bedside stand.
It turned out as a great little light for my needs, very bright with Eneloop batteries and can be used with 14500 and Alkaline, which are available everywhere in case I run out of spare power.
Tail switch operation with very simple and easy UI, mode memory, hidden strobe, reversible clip that can be attached to a cap, and a silicone diffuser which makes it great for lighting up a tent or an 'in the wild' dinner setup.
As for the weight, it's actually lighter than the AA Eneloop battery that is used to power it.
I had a Peli torch which was a gift on leaving my old job, it lasted less than a year before it got broken in a scrap and has languished in my box of kit I no longer use or is broken ever since.
Afterwards I replaced it with a ThruNite 3C V2 which cost me very little overall, added a clickfast torch holder to it and it offers the best of both worlds as it has a 0.1lumen mode which is great for PNB entries. Plus up to a high level of lumens for actual work when on duty conducting searches, or simply as a light to see where you are going in the pitch black without having to hold a torch. This has actually worked in my favour a few times because I can get to other kit like cuffs and see what I am doing clearly hands free.
I've linked to the new version below. Call out to /r/flashlight as a good place to review for ideas but I would suggest any 18650 or other small rechargeable option would be a good shout provided it has a quick access low power mode and some other higher power modes too as a good fit for a vest.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/ThruNite-Micro-USB-Chargeable-Flashlight-Self-define/dp/B06XWXVZH7
There's quite a few options. I'm a big fan of Fenix but they run a bit expensive. I have the Fenix UC30 but it's pretty throwy which I really like for outdoors, not so much for anything else. You might consider the [Nitecore TIP] (https://www.amazon.com/Nitecore-TIP-2017-Rechargeable-Flashlight/dp/B06XXLK75C/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1517953275&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=nitecore+tip&psc=1) because it's small form factor and it's pretty bright for it's size. If you are willing to pay $90 I would just get the Fenix UC35.
I'm assuming the 100 USD budget is for both lights combined. It's probably easier to get a light that includes a battery and charging solution. Wowtac are a well regarded brand that include USB rechargeable batteries with each of their lights.
For a headlamp (floody light) I'd recommend the Wowtac A2S for $30
For a normal flashlight (for more reach) get the Wowtac A1S It's definitely not the throwiest (longest reaching) light available but it should be good. Also $30. Make sure when ordering both to buy the neutral white (NW) version for each as it will cut through fog better than cool white.
That's about 60 USD, if you need spare batteries $40 is more than enough to cover spare batteries and a charger. Let us know if you need recommendations for those.
I carry the Lumintop Tool 2.0 AA and love it. I don’t use the 14500 since I want a low mode that’s not 16 lumens, but other than that I love the light and the ~250lm turbo on a NIMH battery is all I need. We like to fool ourselves thinking we need 1,000 lumens for EDC, and while I do carry a larger 18650 light with almost 1,300 lumens, which is nice to have but realistically, 250-300lm is probably good enough for most of my purposes.
$20 on amazon.

I splurged on this Ridgid 3-panel light a while back and I use it all the time. It can take an extension cord or batteries, which is really nice. Might be too big and bright for working under a vehicle.
This is my #1 favorite headlamp. Kinda heavy, but super bright, built like a tank, and the rechargeable battery lasts a long time.

I am not a /r/flashlight expert, but I am an experienced hiker along the AT and other long distance trails.
Flashlights / headlamps are important, but you'll use them less than you expect during a thru hike. It's rare you'll night hike and common you'll be in bed shortly after sunset. Night pee break is the most likely time you'll need a torch.
Weight is the biggest factor for me, although of course functionality and quality are important. My recommendation would be something super simple, like the Nitecore TIP. It's rechargeable and super small. Still enough power to night hike if you really need to, and low settings to get around the tent/shelter or cook dinner.
You should also check out /r/Ultralight for other gear recommendations and of course /r/AppalachianTrail.
Wowtac A1S - seems to be a winner for me...
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07567K2QC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_ICfUAbP97Q496
Good luck to everyone, and thanks for your generosity. I've been looking for a light, and may just buy this one after I'm sure I haven't won it.
I agree with the Wowtac A2S/Convoy S2+ suggestion, and will add a link for the Convoy S2+ suggestion. The older Convoy S2+ have worse UIs, the SST-20 LED models are all new and it's a pretty decent LED anyway. Unless you have a real strong preference towards blue tinted lights, if you go that route get the 4000k and either 6 7135 or 8 7135. More 7135 is more brightness, faster battery drain.
If you really want AA, look into the Lumintop Tool AA, although it takes 14500 (3.7V AA sized batteries) also, for more brightness. There's a bundle version on amazon with a 14500 with micro-USB charging built in. It's LED is not as good and I'd only suggest this if you really want small.
On charging 18650s (or 14500s): A 12v cigarette to USB adapter would work, with the note that you shouldn't charge your lithium-ion batteries in a hot vehicle, as it degrades the battery life. You also shouldn't store them in freezing weather and plan on using it, as it just won't work well until it warms up.
Decent portable chargers: Nitecore F1 will charge lithium batteries and can act as a powerbank.
Olight Universal Charger can charge most things and is pretty foolproof.
My ThruNite TN12 2016 edition is not exactly cutting edge but has a lovely natural tint and is much cheaper than the competition at $40. I also wanted the EDC size without loosing the "tactical" endcap switch and with 1000 lumens it was just the perfect combination of price and performance for me.
Sofirn SP36S
It's barely half your budget, comes with batteries, has a built in charger. It's very bright, has a tint and CRI that's good for making things appear naturally. It also has a great user interface that's easy to use (Anduril). It has a general purpose beam pattern that I think will suit you better than a beam pattern that leans hard towards flood or throw.

Thank you! Happy to be part of the community
Sweet deal! Would prefer the TIP CRI, but it is above 40 usd from amazon :(
The thrunite ti10 may fill a nice spot as a nightstand light though! NW obviously. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B01B498P3O
Oh, otherwise I guess a neat little emisar d4, 4000k xp-g2 from intloutdoor would fulfill the price limit extremely well! It is not amazon though, so I guess it is a long stretch
I have this Lumintop Tool. I've only had it about three months, but I've been super impressed by how bright it is for the size.
You can find this type of light for less than $3 on AliExpress. Probably not a terrible light for the price. It will have an ugly tint and it's certainly not waterproof, but that's what you get for the cost of a soda.
You didn't list the features you want, but I'm sure there are some other lights out there that will satisfy them. Maybe something like this ThruNite T10? Have you checked the stickied post on lights that get recommend a lot?
A Thrunite TN12 would be your best bet:

Can go from 0.4lm firefly (even better than your Fenix), all the way to 1000lms if you need it.
Nice constant brightness, and is nice and reliable.
Edit: Except on its highest mode, where it slowly goes down as the battery drains.
It's gonna be more like $70, but I'd go for the Sofirn SP36 Anduril with batteries (and it has USB-C charging). I personally think it's worth the slight increase; it's a really good value.
Here's the link
Thank you for the giveaway! Have used your search engine several times before, it is very useful so I must thank you for spending time on that too, massive props! The flashlight I'd love as my first decent one would be the Thrunite TC15 . I have been looking at an FW3A or DS4 but the options confuse me, so this would be a wonderful entry piece to the hobby! Thanks again
This is a good bright light for the money and usb rechargeable
Anker Super Bright Tactical Flashlight, Rechargeable (18650 Battery Included), Zoomable, IP65 Water-Resistant, 900 Lumens CREE LED, 5 Light Modes for Camping and Hiking, Bolder LC90 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KH2JP5G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_l05uCb07ZA7N1
Nice man, both your kits are pretty solid. I'm at work so I can't be as thorough as I would like but here are a few ideas that stood out.
1/8" Pad: Drop it, cut two panels off your zlite to use as the frame and then just pull them out the pack to use at night to sleep. I did this all summer with my KS50 and it worked great. You'll need to cut a little bit off the width for it to fit, but it's minimal and not noticeable when sleeping.
Headlamps: There are much lighter headlamp options and many prefer flashlights for night hiking to bring the light closer to waist level and elongate the shadows. You can also clip them to a brim of a hat for hands free use around camp. A little thrunite ti3 would be a good bet if you don't plan on much night hiking, or a Nitecore Tip 2017 for night hiking.
Knife: The Victorinox Classic SD only weighs 22grams or if all you need is a knife check out Spyderco Ladybug at 16grams. Avoid amazon for the ladybug, there are counterfeits going around i hear.
FAK: You could likely pair this down, mine only weighs 1.5oz
Houdini P/O: Seems unnecessary with the versalite? But I've never worn the Nano-Air Light Hoody, is the idea that the houdini would provide a breathable wind barrier when used in combination? I know this is a common strategy with fleece.
Kahtoola Micro Spikes: If we end up needing them this year I'm going to try Snowline Chainsen Light. Quite a bit lighter than microspikes.
On a side note, when do you start?I'm heading out on May 18th. Edit: Nevermind...somehow missed this in your post...maybe I'll see you all in Oregon or Washington! I'm targeting a late August finish. It depends, which is why I maintain an arbitrary list of popular lights instead of the definitive list of the very best lights.
My own go-to is an Armytek Wizard Pro modified with an LED that has a very high color rendering index. If I had to take something as it came, I'd consider the Zebralight H600Fd or H600Fc instead, as they come with high-CRI LEDs from the factory.
Those are higher priced models though and the most recommended headlamp on /r/flashlight right now is probably the Armytek Elf C2, which has most of the features of the Wizard Pro. They take "reddit" as a discount code.
Finally, the Wowtac A2 is a surprisingly good budget option at $20 and is highly competitive due to the price.
All of these use the 18650 rechargeable battery, which has the capacity of 4-6 rechargeable AAs or 10+ alkalines. All but the Zebralights come with a battery and a way to charge it. All are also right-angle lights that work well handheld as well, and all but the Wowtac come with a pocket clip.

I use this flashlight. Mostly on trails. I carry it in my forward most hand. This allows you to point the light around turns. Having a light mounted on your board will not allow you to see where you are carving to. Board mounted lights are only good to help you to be seen. Terrible for actually riding. It is rechargeable by a Android cord.
Woooo!
Not sure how the $15 limit on international shipping applies, is it included in the $52 or on top of that (total of $67)? Asking because I couldn't find anything with shipping under $15 to Finland..
Anyways, If I limit to max of $52, this Nitecore Tini fits the bill at $29.99 and $19.00 shipping (total: $48.99): https://www.amazon.com/NITECORE-Metallic-Rechargeable-Keychain-Eco-Sensa/dp/B077PC43TC/?tag=parametrek-20
If the total limit is $67, I have a hard time choosing between the Rovyvon Aurora A8 and Nitecore NU25, but maybe the hiker in me would approve the headlamp more as I already have a pretty good EDC in the Nitecore Tip CRI.. So, NU25, $36.95 and $27.26 shipping (total $64.21): https://www.amazon.com/Nitecore-NU25-Rechargeable-Headlamp-Yellow/dp/B078PH9DCB/?tag=parametrek-20
Edit: Actually looks like if you go down enough in price, so does the shipping. As I don't have any AAA lights, the Thrunite Ti3 NW might be interesting.. $13.95 and $13.17 shipping: https://www.amazon.com/ThruNite-Ti3-XP-G2-Neutral-White/dp/B00EC0FY1O/?tag=parametrek-20
On the flashlight, allow me to recommend the Nitecore TIP . I recently bought one and have been very impressed with it. It is tiny, super bright, has 3 modes, water resistant, and holds a charge for a very long time.
There are some incredible lights out there not only much smaller than what you've got but significantly more powerful. Thrunite has a bundle deal on their amazing TC12 w/XP-L where you get the light with built-in charging and battery for $60 or Sofirn's SP32A v2.0 bundle is only $30 from Amazon. They are both top-notch quality at 1/2 the cost of olight and some of the other big names. Go with a neutral color, you won't be disappointed!
I will recommend the Wowtac A1S bss v2
Its very bright (1100 lm 19200 cd), durable (check out the torture tests on youtube), and it has a detachable bezel for defensive purposes. Im a big fan of the two button UI as well. Definitely great value at this price point.
Need more karma but i'll give it a shot =) good luck everyone!

Awesome! Thank you for the detailed response! I am ordering the SP32, my coworker is getting the SP31 (he likes the end button) I appreciate your assistance!!
Do you need specifically a pen-sized light, or just overall very compact, pocket-sized thing?
If you want brighter and with longer runtime, you will have to ditch AAA batteries.
18650 battery is the ‘industry standard’. A great option is to buy Convoy S2+. Quality components, great emitters (LEDs), compact size - all for under $20. Add 2 batteries with charger and you are still under $50 limit.
If you are not really interested in doing research on this topic, check out the sticky post - arbitrary list of flashlights, divided by categories. Simply pick whatever you like most from that list. Thrunite TN12 would be something that might fit your requirements and comes with rechargeable battery and holster, so you don’t have to worry about anything.

This Sofirn is under $36, There's an extra 10% off you can click if I win :) It's on sale, if that's no good at time of contest end, then this Nitecore would be great.
WOW!
This Wowtac Wowlight definitely seems like a good deal to me.
https://www.amazon.com/Wowtac-A1S-BSS-TAC-V2/dp/B07567K2QC/?tag=parametrek-20
Sofirn SP31 v2.0 is similar to the Wowtac A1S (dual switch but XP-L HI LED, so it's throwier). The low is 5lm. It's overpriced in Amazon, you can get it cheaper at AliExpress. Edit: Another option is the Sofirn SP32A v2.0, it allows you to choose between the fixed modes and ramping, but as it's side switch only you should use either electronic or mechanical lockup to prevent accidental activation.
Another option is the Thorfire VG15S (tail-switch only). Its XM-L2 LED is not the newest but it's still bright and the flashlight has a 0.5lm moonlight, the bundled battery is not bad and it isn't too expensive. The XP-L used in the Wowtac is pretty much a miniaturized version of the XM-L2 to fit in smaller spaces, they are very similar in performance.
I've been researching this myself recently, and here are the common recommendations:
These are both 18650 headlamps though, so they are heavier than others that might use a single AA or 14500.
This is great. Thank you for the opportunity! I would love another

Check out the Thrunite TC15. It’s a USB rechargeable LED flashlight that’ll last you for a while. It has a nice throw (distance the light can reach, ~245m), and it’s pocket sized so you can add it to your EDC.
If you have any other flashlight related questions, post them on r/flashlight! We’d love to answer your questions.
Also check out this review of the light, the OP did a great job.
This is great of you, thanks!

I love your site. i wish there was a way to add companies like convoy, sofirn, and emisar. i dont think most people know about companies like these. i understand why you havent added them. No formal website stating specs.
I just recently bought the ThruNite TN12. I'd definitely recommend it. It's tough, not too big, fits in a pocket, especially with the metal belt clip. It's got a few easy to manage settings, no incredibly complicated clicky system or twisting and it auto turns on to the last used setting so all it takes is one click. It also has the option to hold the on button half down for quick use. It runs on an 18650 which I would buy from Orbtronic if I were you, that's where I got mine. It also has a strobe setting if that'd be something you're interested in. If you have Amazon Prime you can get the shipping free too. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01EWW91S8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I really like the Thrunite T10. So much so that I've bought 2. I bought CW in September and carried it everyday until the clip got caught on my car door as I was getting out. The clip came off and got run over. I've been told that I can email thru ite and they'll send me another but I've just attached it to my key ring and it's great to have on there! It's only about 3.5 inches in length half and inch wide. It's got a deep carry clip, and 3 modes. The highest gives you 252 lumens. To me it's totally worth it.

Thrunite T10 is very good light for the starter.
Thrunite TN4A (4XAA) if you want some 18650 level power.
Manker E03H if you like high CRI and a magnet you can attach to your car/or use it as headlamp while fixing your car with both hands.
And ofc Armytek for ruggedness or Zebralight light for their superb UI.
I'd love to have a Rovyvon A8! Thanks for the opportunity!
Actual user report.
I have the $27 one cell Anker light similar to yours, since June 2018. I used it extensively for a few months until I arrived at /r/flashlight. In fact, just used it tonight so I could write this honestly.
My observations:
Notice: I just discovered the 2 cell version has non-replaceable cells. Choose the 1 cell model that I have (replaceable cells).
Would I buy this again? Probably not. Is it "bad". No, has been ok for me. Just understand what you are buying. Of course, YMMV. Read this

Rovyvon A8. Thank you for the give away! Best of luck everyone!
What are your shelters for? Can you give us any more details on your situation?
Without knowing much about what you really need, I would recommend you look at the Thrunite Archer 1A. You can get it on Amazon for about $30. It runs on 1 AA battery, it's bright, small, easy to use, and it has a very low mode that can provide a small amount of light for 1-2 weeks.
One more thing: do NOT rely on alkaline batteries for your emergency kits. They tend to leak after a while and may damage other items in the process. Invest in some Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA (L91) cells for your kits. Yes, they're more expensive, but they won't leak and they have a great shelf life.
I carry one of these every day. Eats CR123s on full power and gets super toasty, but lasts long on the "low" mode which is bright enough for most applications. Also has strobe mode if that's your thing, and the clip is nice.
Thanks for doing these!
Hopefully I’ll win a Tip!

Thank you for the giveaway.
Going forward, I’d say go with smaller prizes. My reasoning is that the larger the prize the more us non-americans get screwed by shipping/taxes. We’re at a point where I’d almost feel bad about winning this light because it’d be robbing someone in the US a chance to get a zebralight. Feels fairer when it’s everyone going for a budget light.
Edit: or if you decrease frequency, decrease it so much that the prices can go up by a bit :) Around $60 is the most painful range to be in, with half the prize still being eaten by costs.
Respect for the fallen subteddits (a few of my favorites were among them.)

Been shopping this light recently! Thanks and good luck to all!
I haven't used Klarus myself, but they appear to be similar to EagleTac and Fenix which are decent flashlights, although a bit overkill for most people.
I have a few Streamlight and Surefire lights which I am very happy with. Usually, if someone is looking to get a decent flashlight which isn't too expensive and will last a long time, I'd point them in the direction the Protac 1L-1AA, since CR123/18650 batteries can be hard to find/expensive in stores and it can use AA batteries in a pinch.
Most people don't really need a flashlight brighter than around 200 lumens, so a lot of these extreme lumen models are a bit overkill. Not to mention that usually with a lower lumen light the battery will last a lot longer.
From the format of the post I'll take it as a first light I assume you probably don't have 18650 batteries or a dedicated charger, Then I highly recommend either the Sofirn SP31 or the Wowtac A1S both on amazon for around $30 or less and come with an 18650 and charging solution with a turbo of 1000+ lumens.
Its but a taste and first step into the game you will soon find yourself with more lights then imaginable.... =D

Not particularly, just because it's small. I want something that will disappear in my pocket.
I already have this Anker which I love: https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Tactical-Flashlight-Rechargeable-Water-Resistant/dp/B01KH2JP5G
And I have a really good headlamp, so I want something light and small for EDC. I feel like I am more likely to keep a penlight on me than something 18650 size.
I am open to suggestions though; I keep looking at the Atactical A1S
The Thrunite TN12 and Nitecore MH 10 are both good value for money, and if you want to max out your budget I love my Armytek Wizard Pro for its angled lense, magnetic base and drop / waterproof design. If you are a plumber I assume it can happen that your light gets wet at some point so that might be something to consider.
I haven't hiked the JMT so I can't comment on your clothing system but here are some general thoughts:
Ditch the headlamp for a sub 1oz USB rechargeable flashlight $30
Ditch the Leatherman for a Victorinox Swiss Army Classic $15
Ditch the paper maps and use Guthook's since you already have it. $Free
Ditch the Sea to Summit X-Cup and I wouldn't bother with the hot lips either $Free
Replace the trash compactor bag with a Fumigation bag $2.49
Ditch the compass $Free
Replace the stove with the BRS Stove $15
All this should save you about ~11 ounces for ~$63.
If you are worried about fitting in the superior 35 I would take a look at the MLD Prophet $195. This should be plenty of room and will save you an additional 18+ ounces.
Ah yeah that would be very useful.
So I need it on Amazon because that's where I have credit. I don't see a Nichia 219B version. Does this mean they don't have the color accurate version?
Edit: Also, would this one suggested elsewhere be color accurate since it's Neutral White?
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07F8QTB2N/
This one looks pretty good for the price! All i have is 2 chinese zoomies ive been rocking the past few years, i need to upgrade soon as it is lol.
Alright, I suggest something like this. It's has 900 lumens, it's IP65, it has a rechargeable battery, it has a head that appears to be capable of delivering impacts, and at $25 USD, it is easily replaceable.
It is an US link though, so you may want to find the Canadian equivalent of it.
Thanks for the GAW! Acebeam H40 HCRI. I also think that less frequent GAWs are better so that it would feel more special since it will become more unanticipated.
The Thrunite Archer 1A is a nice light with great mode spacing, its high is bright enough for auxilliary lighting under the stairs for sheetrocking. The 2x AA model suffers from a huge gap between 75 and 500 lumens, which imo is unsuitable for a light of this caliber.
Would love to win a Lumintop Tool AAA
Thank you! Good luck everyone!

Hello flashlight seeker! You may find our arbitrary list of popular lights to be a useful starting point.
For more personalized recommendations, check out this guide for posting some extra info about your needs/wants.
Otherwise, the community suggested budget starter light is the Convoy S2+ with 4000K and 7136x6 drivers.
For a non-18650 light, the AA ThruNite T10 II or Lumintop Tool, and AAA Lumintop IYP365 or Sofirn C01S are all good choices.

What battery are you using and what are you pointing it at? The materials most likely to actually burn are dark clothing or black paper. Receipt paper that has been blacked out with a marker can ignite in seconds. But that demands a high discharge battery, like a 30Q.
That said, look into the SP36. Same UI as the FW3A so it has the fun blinky modes, 5000+ lumens, high CRI, USB C charging, and affordable. It’s pretty great. Give it these batteries for good performance. You can get batteries with higher discharge, but the heat makes sustained output at those extreme levels impractical. 30Qs will get you melted plastic and scorched pants while still keeping decent capacity.
This is a great light that is small and has a solid hot spot and some nice spill. $41.00

This is my favorite compact travel light:

It requires a cr123 to achieve maximum brightness, but also works with AAs.
Awesome! Thank you!

Thrunite T10 is a pretty safe bet, single AA so decent runtime on lower modes and good size (not too big or small). Maxes out at 252 lumens though, so a little brighter than you're asking on the highest setting. Also comes with a diffuser!
This is the older model, they're promising a new one for this year, but the original ETA was January I believe, so who knows when we'll actually get it.
Thanks dude you're the best! :D https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KH2JP5G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_2lT8BbPJ2QY68
