We used to live out of suitcases (due to Mom's employment, not this, this sucks and I'm so sorry they're going through this)! Small portable game systems are a must for kids, I don't know if that's something that they made it out with, but they sure made our lives better. I would have killed for a Kindle, but even old systems from a second hand shop or a yard sale (sometimes you have to leave them behind anyway, it's hurts less if they weren't expensive) would probably be welcome. Phone cards, even just one a piece for emergencies, are incredibly helpful. We sometimes used blow up furniture, they don't often last long, but it's fun, it's portable, and it's yours. Decorative throws serve multiple purposes: as blankets, you can hang them for decor that helps the heating bill, and then you can wrap your stuff in them when you leave again. A camera, so that you can focus on new happy memories (not trying to encourage repression, but it really makes forgetting the bad parts easier later when you have concrete proof of the good ones). Stuff for a luxurious bath every now and then would be 'frivolous' enough for a gift, and it helps with the mental health, as well as technically being practical (everyone needs to be clean!).

As for the organizing, there are the closets that hang, or the collapsible stand alone wardrobe. There's pop up storage bins, or this hoarder enabling abomination that I may be buying myself now. These things are like suitcases you never have to unpack.

I actually have this vacuum, it works awesome on hard floors and gets the job done on carpets if you keep at it, it's fairly quiet for a vacuum, and comes apart for getting hard to reach areas/fixing when you sucked up something it shouldn't have eaten. You could toss in a few small office/kitchen sized trashcans and liners to match, a lot of people can stay clean if they have arms reach access to a bin, but never think about buying extra bins.

You said that she has some cookware, but I'm going to add this here anyway. We always left behind the measuring spoons and cups, then wouldn't buy more until we absolutely had to. We often lived in hotels and lived off of whatever could be microwaved or grilled on the hibatchi (note, that was an example, don't spend more than $20 on one), and a good set of microwavable dishes makes a world of difference as to what you can make. Spices to dress up canned veggies are also indispensable and often out of budget, even if it's just some Mrs. Dash mixes, seasoning salt, garlic powder.

Lastly though, I want to commend you. You're an awesome friend. The world would be a better place with more of you. Knowing that someone out there has your back can mean everything when you have nothing. Good luck to your friend and her son, I hope your care package makes their day.

It's probably going to be really dependent on what needs to be prioritized. At 4...she may be able to do some chores with supervision, but obviously I wouldn't rely on her for major tasks that you expect to be done in a timely manner. (I will link a few things, they're just basic Amazon links so you can see what I'm talking about.)

For my house (family of 5) the first thing is making sure EVERYTHING we need for the next day is ready to go. On Sunday nights each kid pulls 5 outfits out with socks and stacks them in their closet in something like this (one kid has one for sweaters, but another has one with smaller cubbies, not sure where it came from or what it's original purpose was but it works fine). This helps us in a few ways. First - clothes are already decided. No take-backs. No crying. No, "BUT I WANTED TO WEAR THE PINK DRESSSSSUGH!" The pink dress can go in the rotation for the next week. Also, you can see what kind of laundry you will need to do for the next week. One of our kids has 3 weeks of outfits before we need to wash clothes...but we can see in her drawer when just one set of clothing is left that we need to focus on her laundry (she's the youngest, older kids often do their own laundry as needed). Also - any special "spirit" week clothes can be picked out in advance. If you realize that you are missing an item for one day you have a good warning and can get it in place in time.

Backpacks packed, lunchboxes in the fridge, everything signed and ready. It may take time to create a habit for a particular time...we were trying to do it in the run-up to bedtime, but it just got too hectic. I started doing it as soon as we were home from school. This way, in the morning you wake up, take care of hygiene, eat, get dressed, pick up your stuff, and walk out the door. My kids eat breakfast at school now so we can literally be ready in 15 minutes if we absolutely had to.

I have this file-folder system on the wall next to the front door. There is a clear pocket in the front...right now I have the school calendar in that. The older kids each have 1 pocket, the younger kid has 3...though technically one is for me to store important papers we may need to refer back to (permission slips that have dates, times, and instructions on them, for example). But when each kid gets home we go through the backpack, homework is started, I start signing agendas, looking over notes, etc. At the end of the homework, everything goes back into the backpack, then the backpack goes by the door. I use tons of 3M hooks to make it easier to keep stuff together. The youngest kid has one for a backpack and another for her jacket. There is one on the side of her bed for pajamas. The big kids have them in their room for hanging headphones and various electronic cables. I would rather have a million hooks than a kid goes, "But I lost it b/c I left it on my bed and then someone washed my sheeeeets!"

I also put these shoe organizers over every door that can handle it. Low pockets for kids, high pockets for parents. It makes it easier to clean (usually) because if something doesn't belong in the room...I am for sure too lazy to walk one single thing across the house. I will put it in this (if it fits) and then once a week (or so) we can take what belongs to us, put it away, or put it in the room it goes in. This way I don't feel like I'm constantly running back and forth all the time. And it's off the floor, so if you decide NOT to deal with it - the house can still be neat without a hassle.

At night - dishwasher always gets run...yes even if it's not totally full (though with a family of 5, that is rare). Because at least in the morning I can empty it while the kids are getting ready for school and now it's ready for the daytime dishes...or I can even put in some big pots and pans that didn't fit the night before and run those so they're ready in time for dinner.

I have a timer on my washing machine. I put the load in with detergent then set it to run about 60-80 minutes before I get home (it's a fancy machine and usually takes at least 90 minutes to do a full load). This way I may hear it buzz just after getting home and can take the clothes out of the washer. So I can always do at least 1 load a day and laundry doesn't pile up too much. I've done soaking loads overnight as needed. I also keep a dedicated bucket in the laundry room so if I need to pre-soak just a few items or kid t-shirts or something I can put them in the bucket with some water and detergent or pre-treater. Then I put the bucket on top of the freezer...b/c I use my freezer every night (I like ice) and it reminds me that those things need to go in with a load.

I do *minor* meal prep. If I am making lasagna I just double ingredients and make two (it's super easy) then cook one and freeze the other. When I go grocery shopping I always buy a jar of sauce and box of pasta or a frozen pizza...this way if dinner gets ruined (like the time a kid turned the temp up while I was in the bathroom) I can have food on the table in 15 minutes or less and we don't have to try and drive out for fast food. If I'm cooking ground beef...I can double or triple it, then portion it into quart size baggies for later meals.

I also plan for 5 dinner meals each week...but have the same breakfast and lunch each week. So I might decide oatmeal for breakfast this week, with turkey sandwiches and a small green salad for lunch (for me at least, the kids again, have switched to school lunches for the most part). Then 5 different meals. Often they tend to share a spice palate or some ingredients so I don't buy a large container of X and then use one portion and have it leftover forever. Then the 2 nights I don't have a meal planned...we can reheat leftovers, get take out, make sandwiches (there is always bread, peanut butter, and jelly) or find something frozen to heat up. This reduces our food waste and makes sure that I don't have a lot of extras in the house that we might not use. I buy exactly 1 onion b/c only 1 recipe needs an onion, for example. If you have a list - it's a lot easier to get exactly what you need. Some of my local stores are also doing grocery pick up now where they get it ready and I just pull up and get handed bags. Most don't charge extra for this for now. But a few do - but sometimes the few bucks are worth not having to spend an hour in the grocery store. You can use that hour at home for something else.

I find trying to create a hard and fast schedule only seems to make me frustrated if I don't accomplish something or get behind. So being organized about the tasks I need to do helps create a less stressful schedule. Does that make sense? And sometimes...yeah, the laundry needs to be done, but just doing this one load tonight before bed will mean we have clothes in the morning and I have some time to work out how to get the rest of it taken care of.

I lofted my bed last year, which I definitely think is one of the best ways to get the most out of your room. I ended up getting a bunk buddy, which is basically a little nightstand that attaches to your bed. It was probably one of my favorite dorm items I bought. Also, I bought a hanging organizer that I put on the ladder of my bed that I didn't use. It turned out to be a really good place for me to put assorted items, binders, or whatever I didn't have a designated spot for. This really helped as it kept a lot of random junk from accumulating on my desk (links below to give you an idea, not exactly what I had but same concept). Another thing I bought was a medium sized whiteboard that I put on the inside of the loft on the ladder that I didn't use. It was a really good way to keep track of assignments, to-do lists, etc.

The best tip I can give you is keep your space clean. A clean room makes it feel a whole lot bigger than it actually is. Obviously there will be test weeks and whatnot where you won't be able to clean as much, but generally try and tidy up whenever you have a couple of free minutes. Not sure about how others fell, but when I kept a clear room, especially a clean workspace, I really found that I was a lot more efficient and felt a lot less crowded. Also (depending on how much/little your roomate cares), I always noticed that when I kept my personal side of the room clean, my roomate did as well. I feel like it kind of encouraged him to keep his area clean and overall made the room feel a lot more spacious.

Also cut a pool noodle and put it over the bottom of your bed frame. Probably banged my head 20 times getting up from my chair in the first few days before I got one.

The over the door shoe holder /u/rainbowfrapp mentioned is one I'd suggest, the pockets allow for things besides shoes - I have one inside my upstairs closet that we have gloves, scarves, and dog stuff (poop bags, collars, leashes, etc) in it to store. I have them in both my kids' rooms that hold shoes, belts, etc too. It gives extra space.

for one of my kids, I have a closet that sits in the corner so she has space for stuff, hers is a wood one, so she can put shelves and stuff in it.

this gives great storage on the side bed - book, tissues, pen paper, just some things nearby when you're already in bed reading homework etc.

• Hang your pants on a hanger like this to save space.
  
• If the closet has a sliding door, remove it and mount a curtain like this. Make sure you mount it in such a way that the curtain can slide easily along the rod. It will make it much easier to access your closet. Treat the curtain like a giant piece of art (pick a design and color you like), since it will take up a lot of visual space.
  
• Pick up a hanging shoe organizer too.

First, how is your closet designed? What storage do you have outside of your closet? Do you have a dresser or could you fit something bigger like an IKEA Pax? Maybe just a shoe organizer?

• If you can change your closet, look into something like Closetmaid, Ikea Algot, or Container Store Elfa. Or DIY.
  
• The goal is to maximize drawers, hanging, and containers.
  
• Can't change much? There's freestanding Algot and Elfa drawers which can hold a ton. Both have variations. Even adding an IKEA Rast or Nordli could fit a bunch.
  
• Another tip - are your closet doors working for you? Mine prevented me from accessing the entire middle so I switched to Bifold doors.
  
• In college I used these hanging organizers for things like jeans and sweaters or this for shoes and even it made a big difference in a small closet.
  
  Now let's talk storage. If you haven't, go for the velvet hangers. I buy mine in bulk from Costco but even Target has them and frequentish sales. If you fold things, file fold where you can. Get drawer dividers and sort.
  
  This closet project for Lauren Conrad involves some more expensive solutions but there's a ton of lessons you can apply to cheap items. When you design your closet, consider leaving space on top of a shelf for file folded baskets for sweaters and such. How are you storing workout gear or lounge clothes?
  
  Take advantage of the off season. Store out of season clothes elsewhere, like under the bed. (IKEA, (Closetmaid) I have a bench at the end of my bed that stores a lot of my out of season workout clothes. You might also look at where you store coats/jackets and if there's another spot since I know they can be so bulky. I have a storage cabinet in my basement for my hiking gear and I also throw the coats/jackets in there too when it isn't winter. During the winter I added a coat tree and I can store them in a corner, not my closet.

Get a cheap hanging shoe organizer and hang it from your easy up, you can store your snacks and stuff in it!

If you have the funds get a utility battery that can jump a car, I use one to keep 10+ phones topped up for the majority of the weekend. This is a newer model of the one I have.

Firefly lights a great way to illuminate the camp at night and one use of the batteries should last all weekend as long as you turn them off during the day.

Easy ups are usually 40-50 bucks at Dick’s sporting goods. Although my one regret is getting one with a larger footprint than the covered area (legs are angled outward). The ones that have the same covered area as the foot print (legs go straight up and down) are much better, especially when combining a few easy ups together!

I have a couple of these that I've used for at least 7 or 8 years now that have no visible wear. They were just generic ones that I picked up at a discount store, but there are two things I like about them. First, they are made from canvas, so they are heavier and more durable. Second, they have a hook style hanger like this. The hooks connect to a frame that supports the entire top of the organizer, so there is no sagging like I imagine might happen on some of the looped style hangers like you posted.

lol but honestly, i feel this will really help keep a closet organized. i know it says its for shoes, but if you dont have a lot of shoes you can still put other things there.

Consider hiring a bi-weekly or monthly maid. I did and it is helpful, as my husband and I disagree on cleaning and this keeps the peace. I hate spending money on things that I can just do myself, but, again, the peace is really worth it.

What I do for my son is that he takes off everything at the main-level coat closet. I have a shoe stand in there for everyone's daily shoes (special occasion shoes go in the individual's bedroom closet), and backpacks go here too (though my son is only in preschool so doesn't have homework.) There's a table right next to the closet for lunch bags. I also utilize this closet organizer which has been fantastic! You can easily put lunch bags here as well if you don't have room for a table. I designate one 'box' for each person in our family, for gloves, hats, etc.

Regarding the seat belt, you need to observe him to find out exactly what is taking him forever to put it on. I don't understand what the sneaking game is, but if its just something merely annoying, then just ignore it and he'll eventually tire of it and move on.

This is the model I've got! I'm not an audiophile by any stretch, but I like it well enough.

Also, YMMV, but I really enjoyed these if your collection winds up taking off. Makes for some lazy-ass wall art.

Have you considered a hanging organizer? Like this. (That's just the first one that popped up on Amazon, I can't say whether it's a good one or not, I was just giving an example.)

Some things I really like having folded, and if you like some things folded and you used one of those, it wouldn't use up your limited drawer space, but takes advantage of more vertical space (though they come in different lengths and widths, so not all are full length). You could even use baskets or boxes in them for things like socks.

Then all your stuff is closer together than in a separate dresser.

Ah so an emergency wheel, yeah I had that in my old car. Not worth it in my opinion. If I can basically only drive it to the repair shop I rather save the space and wait on the tow truck.

Yes except walls on the sides too (except for an opening/gate to enter) to prevent the blanket from falling off. And since my TV is right in front of the bed, I wouldn't want the wall where the feet are (blocks lower part of TV). Are all your clothes floor-length! Mine aren’t. If you have tops or folded-over slacks, put them all together and put a shoe rack underneath them.

There are shoe pockets that hang from a clothes rod that will work with a closet system like this.

It folds flat and you can get boxes that fit in each shelf. You could pack in flat in a suitcase and just hang it up at the next location and unpack your bag into it.

I guess this depends on how frequently you will be changing locations.

Each shelf carries scarves from the same color family. It lives in my kids bedroom ;)

I wear abaya and shela in my daily life so I usually hang the ironed matching (polyester) shela on the same hanger as the abaya. However, I do get tempted to investigate wearing scarves instead of shelas as I have very fine hair and the polyester shelas do a lot of slipping and sliding and I use an unfashionable number of (visible) pins to keep it in place!

Be careful with those thumb tacks. These are great for hanging records.

I like these hanging shoe racks that hang on the pole in a closet. They don't take too much space, and I just use one compartment per category of thing. Pile of zippers in one, elastic and twill tape in another, bias tape bundles in one, and so on. I'm also a knitter, and have one entire closet in my house that's just larger versions id these where my yarn is sorted by fiber content and color. Also great for fat quarters and fabric remnants.

Here's what I do.

Clothes that don't get hung up - I bought this with the matching baskets. It's not the lightest thing ever but it's not really heavy either. Not having traditional drawers to fiddle with and keep closed makes moving it easier too, since you can pull out the baskets and fold them flat. I only use half of the drawers for clothes, the other half holds miscellaneous equipment.

Pants - get folded up and stuck in a hanging closet organizer.

Shirts/dresses/jackets - get hung in the closet. I tend to fish through shirts in the morning and if I keep them folded it means they get trashed into a pile before long.

Papers - I don't have a lot of paper so I don't really have this problem, but you could use one or more expandable file folders.

Random knicknacks - My desk has a hutch on top (shelving space), so I bought some baskets that fit and I hide my junky knicknacks in there so they're not visually cluttering up the space. On my desk itself I keep pencils and scissors and such in a pen cup.

Those look a lot nicer than what I got, CollectorMount Album Mount Vinyl. The main selling point for me was that I could easily put them up with command strips.

A hanging shoe rack like this one would be cool. That way she could roll up the wraps and put them in there so they don't drag on the ground from a hook. It'd work for other carriers too if you rolled them up.

The bed looks like the biggest issue. It just takes up too much space, but I have a few ideas.

If you don't care about not having access to door on the right, move the desk so that's its against that door and push it in the corner. Get something like this and a tension rod to put in that weird awkward corner next to the window to store your handbags and other items that are hanging from both your doors. Remove the grey shelf that's on door left and replace with the mirror. The plant can be moved to the other side of the closet. Maybe display your lanyards and medals above your bed instead like this. It will look more organized and can be part of the decoration.

And if you can, downsize the bed and get a tall bed frame that can fit storage underneath the bed.

I think the original intent was so you could hang decorations or clothes, but I'm looking at the possibility of making or using something like this as a combination room divider/hanging storage thing for a tiny studio space.

I've been eyeing these, though I don't have any experience with them, but the reviews look good.

I don't even own a record player, but if I really like the album artwork, I'll buy the vinyl copy. I'm not big on decorations, so I just use these wall mounts and then I don't have to choose any pictures for my home or office.

I'm also not a fan of bending down for clothes, and I find it aids my workflow to have more bins. So my closet has two of these, one for myself, one for my toddler:

Inexpensive and they work really well.

Hanging shelves in my closet. Bibs take up two, short sleeve jerseys in two, long sleeves and warmers in one, socks in one. Then I have my least favorite/last resort if nothing is clean bibs on the top shelf in my closet.
