Those actually still have high output impedance, around 10 ohms or so. You would want to get something with 8 or less ideally.

If you want a internal sound card, the Soundblaster AE-5 has only 1 ohm impedance, you might be able to find it cheaper on some black friday sales.

You could also look at something like the Sabaj DA3 if you want to go external, its around 100 bucks and is a small USB dac/amp. Plenty of power for a DT 770 and is a dual monaural DAC on the cheap. Havent heard it myself, but the few reviews out there are all positive. Spec-wise its extremely impressive.

Dragonfly Black is also a good option and is more extensively reviewed, so its a safe choice and also fine for powering a DT 880.

if you want to go super cheap look at the Sabaj DA2/SMSL IDEA which would be fine for a DT770 but quality control seems to be an issue with those given the wide range of reactions to it, so I would buy it from Amazon or somewhere else with a good return policy. Its certainly an amazing value and what I would recommend if you are on a budget.

I second the external USB sound card/device. Depending on how high quality you want to go and what kind of amplification you want, there are lots of options.

Turtle Beach makes one for slightly cheaper that looks decent.

The soundblaster above is probably a pretty good bet.

There are a whole bunch of off-brand USB sticks for around $15 that probably won't cut it.

There are external boxes, like the Creative Labs X-Fi soundblaster box, in the $60-80 range but probably better.

And for real good fidelity, you start getting into the USB DAC range. Highly recommended if you have good ears/headphones. These can range from $100 to over $500 depending on what you want... a few recommendations:

  • The Audiophile Products FireEye II (Dac+Headphone Amp, $97)
  • NuForce uDAC-II $129 (or uDAC-II-HP for headphones only, without RCA outputs, $99)
  • FiiO E7 USB DAC/Headphone Amp ($99)

If that's in your price range then you'll enjoy the sound out of any of them, but check reviews and shop around, see what people think. I have the nuForce uDAC and really enjoy listening to it, so I can definitely recommend that based on experience.

    Best of luck!

> good alternatives to these headphones with good bang for my buck

I got a chance to demo those Sonys. Can't say enough good things about them.

Also worth looking into Audio-Technica AT-M70X ($223). AT's new flagship monitor headphone with an amazing sound. Definitely gives the Sonys a run for their money, especially with such a competitive price. I might even like them better.

I'm also quite fond of NAD Viso HP50 ($249). Just an incredible closed-back can.

>amp designed for headphone listening, that I can plug into my Macbook pro and that is hopefully less than $100.

Nothing really worth looking at under $100. Maybe Creative E3 ($99) or Topping TP30 ($99).

However, if you save money on headphones by going with the AT-M70X or the Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 (which are on sale for like $149), you could put the money you saved towards a better amp/DAC.

So if we assume a budget of, say, $200 for an amp/DAC, you can step up to something like Creative E5 ($189), Fiio E17 ($139) (it's even portable!), or Topping TP32EX ($159). Fiio probably makes the best offering in this range.

I have owned the AD900 for around 4 years now and they are still one of my favourite headphones. I have since tried, borrowed and upgraded several pairs and these are the pair that I can't seem to get rid of. I am currently using the Alessandro MS-pro as my main set for the past year, which I have decided are my perfect headphone sound wise, although they're less comfy than the AD900s. Then again, I haven't yet found a pair of headphones more comfortable than the AD series.

Basically, the AD900 takes the AD700 and gets everything right. Deeper bass, fuller sound, better detail and clarity while remaining non fatiguing and keeping that same second-to-none comfort. Pretty much an upgrade across the board. The 'musicality' of those headphones is one of its best features imo.

As for the Senns, I must say I'm not a huge fan of their sound signature. The Sennheiser 'veil' kind of dampens my enjoyment of the music I listen to. Regardless, I find the HD600 more enjoyable to listen to than the HD650.

There also comes the amping issue with the Senns; you'll need a better amp to get the best out of the Senns whereas the STX and the AD900 are to me a fantastic match. In terms of cost/sound with your current setup, the AD900s take this one.

If you like the Audio Technica clarity, you might also want to check out the new(ish) Shure 1440. These are pricewise in the HD650 territory but imo a much better upgrade, considering you enjoy the Audio Technica sound.

This may sound a bit biased coming from the fact that I own them but the AD900s are truly a great pair of phones.

The headphone output of the Topping MX3 and the SMSL AD18 is not good so you will want to add a separate headphone amp to power good headphones such as your AT- AD1000X.

Other better options:

Option1: DAC and headphone amp combo with separate power amp. Monoprice Desktop Headphone Amplifier and DAC $79 plus:

Well. That's a good question. If you are in a budget then pretty much 60-70% who read this will agree. The Fiio E10K. It will set you back less than $100. It is brushed aluminium. Includes a bass gain switch, if you need some additional drive or jaw shocking bass. It's nice and small. And a good DAC/amp.

Mayflower objective 2. This DAC/amp is for more audiophiles with a higher budget. It can drive high impedance headphones and people's listening experience on the Objective 2 was superb on multiple headphone types, that were geared towards different ways of listening. It has superb clean sound.

Sound blaster E5 by creative. It is capable to drive up to 24 bit/192 khz audio files. It is capable to drive headphones up to 600 ohms or 2 300 ohm impedance sets of headphones. It has very good quality sound for what it is.

That'll be that.

So, while I've posted about the JDS Element and the Andromeda CK before, this is the first time I've seriously tried the two together.

Sure, I mean, I tried the two, but the Element was a much too loud for the Andromedas. Then I realized that I had it on high gain. Turning off high gain combined with lowering volume in software (which has effectively no impact on sound quality) let me truly enjoy the Andros with the Element without worrying about the volume knob turning more than 15 minutes.

What are my thoughts?

Sound through the Element

The low impedance of the JDS Element lends a very bassy sound to the Andromedas. If this is a problem for you, it's something that can be "fixed" with an IEMatch. Most impressively, there's zero hiss from the JDS Element through to the Andromedas, something I've not encountered with any amp/DAC other than the SMSL IDEA.

With the Element, the Andromedas retain a wonderfully wide soundstage which I maintain competes with many high-end headphones, nearing what the HD800S can accomplish. Basically, think of these as a perfectly isolating HD800S with more bass and mids - that ridiculously clean sound in a more "fun" and natural feeling signature, with a slight decrease to soundstage.

There's something different about listening through the Element, I think. It sounds more "natural", but I feel that this is more of a placebo: when I listen through a desktop setup rather than my portable one (Pixel XL + IEMatch or IDEA), I find it easier to just sit back and concentrate on the sound more. The volume knob adds to the experience.

Thoughts on the IEMatch

At the same time, the IEMatch seems to do something funky with the sound in addition to simply lowering the bass response. This isn't the first time I've felt like this with impedance dongles; I had the UE Buffer Jack and felt similarly about it when I paired it with my Empire Ears Spartans. Something strikes me as off with these installed - I can't pinpoint it, the headphones perform just as well technically - but I can definitely tell the difference and I definitely dislike their presence.

Comply Foams

One major change I've incorporated since last time I've tried this pairing is using Comply foams on the Andromedas. I've been a huge fan of Spinfits, but they aren't the perfect size for me and often end up creating too much pressure (or being too loose) in my ear canal, which seriously messes with the sound. The Comply Foams are uncomfortable to put in at first (and tedious: you have to compress the tips with your fingers before insertion), and you can feel the foam against your ears if you concentrate, but the isolation and ear pressure problems are completely solved. (These isolate a lot. Walking around with these outside is going to lower your life expectancy.) Still not as comfortable as my customs, as my ears occasionally remember that foams are pushing against them, but I'll take it.

The foams add to the bass response while smoothing out the highs a bit. Cymbals, for example, feel ever so slightly quieter, without losing any clarity.

the schiit fulla2 is $99 but does a lot for that price point. http://www.schiit.com/products/fulla-2

it can be used on your computer as a DAC & Amp for headphones, it can be just a DAC/preamp for powered speakers or just another headphone amp too. even has a 2nd usb input for power if your phone/tablet/whatever is low powered USB.

i havent used one yet, but a lot of great reviews out there about it. i actually just ordered one a few minutes ago though, so can finally get personal recommendation or not.

in general there are a lot of options around/in your $70 price range too.

a simple one from Cambridge for $75, comes in several colors too.

https://www.amazon.com/AudioQuest-Dragonfly-Black-Headphone-Amplifier/dp/B01DP5JHHI/ref=pd_sbs_23_1

the FiiO e10k is another good option at $75. this version comes with some astell & kern/final audio in ears for $80. prob worth the extra $5 for those.

another fiio, the Q1 which is a bit smaller than the e10k

this is a tube amp/dac/preamp. should be a bit "warmer" of a sound signature than other usb dac/amps. ive never used tubes (need to get one someday to see for myself...). you can also swap the tubes out for other ones to try for different sound signatures. again, never used tube amps but that is supposed to be part of the appeal i think.

the m50x are great all around headphones that are easy to power, so that makes it much easier to find something that fits your budget/needs.

  1. A separate microphone and separate headphone is going to provide better performance overall than a 'headset."

  2. V7.1 is available through many different software sets, and you don't need to look at a headphone/headset that is 'natively' "3d/surround sound" capable -
Dolby Atmos (paid); Windows Sonic (free,) - but a lot of the performance of Virtual 7.1 sound comes down to the sound-engine used in the game.

  3. Noise canceling is a completely different issue that a gaming headphone/headset wants to do. Are you sure you want Noise Canceling, or would a closed back (noise-isolating) headphone/headset work?

If you're looking for an all in-one (headset, closed-back) package, the CoolerMaster MH751 (or the 752 with it's V7.1 USB dongle) is the best option. < $90

If you want to get away from the headset; and get interdependent pieces: (will cost a bit more than the CM headset, but has advantages in doing so.)

(prices are with Amazon Prime, so yours may differ - but you can usually ebay them for about the same prices I can see.)

u/chavezlaw78 · 3 pointsr/HeadphoneAdvice

I would say a nice step up from there around that price would be the stereotypical 6XX https://drop.com/buy/massdrop-sennheiser-hd6xx

The Sennheisers will definitely require an amplifier as they are 300 ohms as opposed to your headphones which were 38 ohms. My suggestion for a good amp is https://www.amazon.com/Monolith-Liquid-Spark-Headphone-Amplifier/dp/B07JW7NSXT/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=liquid+spark&qid=1570497350&sr=8-3 .

Or if you like slightly brighter sound signatures the hifiman sundara would be great for you as well (a little out of the budget but still worth considering).

The Sundaras are efficient headphones so they do not fully require an amplifier, however, they would benefit using an amplifier.

https://www.amazon.com/HIFIMAN-SUNDARA-Over-Ear-Full-Size-Headphones/dp/B077XDWT7X/ref=sr_1_2?crid=147POYDMUI5SY&keywords=hifiman+sundara&qid=1570497089&sprefix=hifiman+sun%2Caps%2C133&sr=8-2

If you have a strict budget then I would maybe suggest the Sennheiser 58X as a great option at $160 USD plus the amp I suggested above.

u/flumeremix · 3 pointsr/headphones

That's cool how far some mobo's are able to drive that much. I am assuming you are looking at DT 770's. You may even want to get the 250 ohm.

They are 3 solutions I would recommend, because even driving my 38 ohm to my S9 benefits from an amp and my genres of music are similar to yours.

Solution 1: Is to get a simple dac/plug that can drive an 80 ohm properly.

Solution 2: Is get this little badboy route that usb c to aux into that amp and use a cheap tpu case and velcro(comes with some) to strap on there but that's too many wires for me personally. (But it can drive up to 300 ohms. Albeit with less power then solution 3.)

Solution 3: My favorite, Phone > Shanling L2 > USB DAC 1 or USB DAC 2 > Headphones.

Now this depends on all what you want solution 1 and 2 is cheap, 1 being less cords wires etc, 2 being more wires but kicks ass for being so small. And finally solution 3 is my personal fav, little bulky yes but if you frequently use it and you don't feel cumbersome by it do it. Downside is more money outta pocket. But money well spent. After that you would head into DAP territory but it isn't as versatile as a phone/dac since you can go anywhere without being tied to wifi or tethered unless you have a large library of music already on hand. USB DAC 2 iI mentioned drives more power the higher the impedance compared to the FiiO but I see no issues driving up to 250 ohm. (solution 3 requires a cheap tpu case and velcro). And tbh the usb dacs really aren't that big at all.

If in doubt use a headphone calculator and check the specs on the amps or dacs - whichever you prefer.

u/G65434-2_II · 1 pointr/headphones

A DIY solution would obviously be the cheapest. All you'd need to make one yourself is some suitable, male and female connectors, and resistors suitable values.

But wait, now on reading your opening post again and checked - your soundcard only has a combo audio out + mic TRRS socket, correct? I'd say hold on with DIY adapter idea for now! I don't know if that schematic on the diyaudioheaven site could be directly applied into making an adapter for mic-equipped headphones. At least AFAIK, in-line mic controls work via the button presses causing impedance changes in the mic section of the wiring, that are then interpreted as various commands, so I'd figure the mic would continue working fine as long as that was just included in the DIY adapter (naturally outside the resistors), but perhaps a 'better safe than sorry' approach would be best here. Hopefully someone with more knowledge could chime in.

While not quite 150% what the soundcard costs, there's the iFi iEMatch - around 100% of the Soundblaster's price. And in-line mics reportedly don't unfortunately work with it.

Seems like a tricky situation here... :|

>I also had an idea to put a 300 ohm resistor in line with the usb 2.0 Vcc wire (using usb 2.0 male to female extension cable) but I'm not sure if that would give me what I need

You mean between the computer and the dongle soundcard? That won't work.

u/KiyPhi · 1 pointr/HeadphoneAdvice

Would you be okay with bluetooth then? Fiio's slightly older Q5 has decent power but you might need to get a balanced cable if you listen super loud. You can also upgrade the amp module later if you REALLY want more power. The newer Q5s is basically the same thing with a different amp module and one less usb port.

If you are willing to do the Apple adapter to the Topping NX4 you'll save yourself a lot of money but isn't quite as powerful/clean at max gain.

u/xXxM0RPH3USxXx · 1 pointr/audiophile

Hi, I currently have the Shure SRH1440 Headphones

I am christmas shopping and looking to boost my auditory experience. I have found lossless music players like the Fiio X5 High Resolution Music Player. I have read mixed reviews on whether or not I would need an amp, or a DAC converter with my headphones. I have also read about using the VLC app on my iphone and purchasing a converter like this.

My budget is around $350. How can I best spend my money to supplement my headphones, and get the most bang for my buck? Also, I want something portable since I listen to most of my music on long car rides in the passenger seat, and already have a good set up for listening at home. Thanks!

u/Seasoned_Croutons · 2 pointsr/GooglePixel2

I've been researching portable dac/amps and here are a few to check out.

Fio K1- Its one of the most popular and well reviewed portable dacs at the moment. 24-bit/96khz dac/amp that is supposed to be well balance with a low noise floor for about $40.

Dragonfly Red / [Dragonfly Black] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01F7L3I14/ref=dp_sp_detail?psc=1) . All the reviews and impressions I've read for these devices are that the Black not bad, but Red completely blows it away in terms of sound quality but is also about double the price at around $200.

SMSL IDEA / Sabaj Da2 - Made by the same factory and using the same chipset under different brand names. These have also been getting rave reviews due to being sub 100 dacs but have the sound quality of much more expensive dacs. Also both come with usb-c otg cables. Both seem to be more favorited than the Dragonfly. Both can be found on amazon with the IDEA being a little more expensive than the Da2.

Things to keep in mind are that there are some glitches when some of theses are connected to android phone which have work arounds.

*Hissing or screeching when plugging into phone: Start music first and then plug in dac. Changing the usb mode to midi works for some people as well.

To take full advantage of have a usb dac alot of people recommend this app: USB Audio Player PRO

Also the inline remote controls and mic on headphones won't work with these.

u/Fraqstuh · 1 pointr/HeadphoneAdvice

Thanks for the reply. I suppose I don't necessarily need the background, just on the equipment that I need.

I'm necessarily on a budget, but I would like to maximize the performance of the headphones as best as possible, without going "overboard." I like the idea of a combo amp/DAC, but I'm not sure on the best options at a decent price. I found these to go with:

https://www.amazon.com/JDSLABS-Objective2-Combo-Headphone-NwAvGuy/dp/B00EJ9405O

What are your thoughts?

u/JJReklaw · 2 pointsr/Zeos

Hey Zeoss! I wanted to say awesome reviews and you have been a huge help in stepping into the audiophile world.

I recently picked up the Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 6XX Headphones when they went on sale. Now I'm trying to prepare what amp/dac I should buy.

I use my headphones to game and listen to music, I also work in game development. I was leaning towards the Aune X1S.

https://www.amazon.com/Aune-X1S-384KHz-Headphone-Amplifier/dp/B014FBZCCA

But I also was looking at the Mayflower.

https://www.amazon.com/Mayflower-Electronics-Desktop-ODAC-Rev/dp/B00TQ2JDAG

There is also a massdrop right now for the Aune X7s and I could pick up the X1S Mini dac as an addon.

https://www.massdrop.com/buy/aune-x7s-balanced-headphone-amp

I know the Sennheiser HD 6XX has open backs so I was wondering what you would recommend. Should I stay with the X1S for gaming and general music listening, or would another amp/dac combo be better? I'm not sure if it matters if it's a combo amp/dac or if they are separate like the X7S. Also I'm concerned about my mic, but I'll probably just go with a standalone that goes directly to my PC. My price range is 200-500$. Thanks for any help!

u/Inukinator · 2 pointsr/SonyXperia

I found this from this article and is by far the DAC that suits my taste the best, both looks wise, as well as price-wise, but look at the article, and see if there's something that's more you. (Also you might need an OTG cable, please contact me when you decided on the DAC, and need help choosing an OTG cable)

Edit: There's also this somewhat expensive USB-C DAC, which if you can justify the cost, might be the better choice!

I have two amped setups I run (both are way out of your budget though):

Wow! Thank you for such an informative reply!

I will go through the list a little bit further later, but I am currently liking the options of this amp and this dac

Do I understand correctly that the DAC can also power the headphones from the front?

I will look at the speakers as well, but I guess for now my choices would drive 731i nicely?

u/hipocracy_philosophy · 5 pointsr/headphones

You will not be able to use the mic through the stack and I would use the split cable it came with before plugging into the stack. I went down this route and I think the best solution is to use a standalone mic like the yeti(usb) or Rhode micro if your computer can power a little mic. If that's not your jam, see below.

If you try to use the headphones through the stack and plug the microphone from the headset into your computer, you will encounter ground loop. This is a noise you'll hear because the mic/headphones share the same ground wire and you are splitting that into two separate devices. If you want to use both, you need to use a device that accepts a mic input and also powers your headphones. Like this: ARC Gaming Amplifier & DAC https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078GSLFNW/ or this: Sennheiser GSX 1000 Gaming Audio Amplifier https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LDTP484/

Hey, I'm thinking of purchasing an HD800S but I'm unsure what kind of DAC/AMP setup I should pair them with. I was thinking of the Sennheiser HDVD 800 Headphone Amplifier with DAC but my friend advised against it. So, can someone please help me out here? Thanks.

I'm also relatively new to all this -- I used to just have my Sony MDR-7506s plugged into my computer and for the most part that's 90% of the way there for me. However, the headphone out jack on my motherboard recently started having intolerable noise, so I had to do something to deal with it.

I started with the Fiio E10K (https://smile.amazon.com/FiiO-Portable-Headphone-ICP-AT1000-Headphones/dp/B076DVBNRP/) which I got primarily to avoid the line noise, and it powers the HD 6xx just fine (I got that pair of headphones around when I got the Fiio). I brought the Fiio to work and replaced it at home with the more powerful Massdrop O2 + SDAC (https://drop.com/buy/massdrop-o2-sdac-dac-amp/) which is ~2x the cost of the Fiio. I honestly don't know that I can tell the difference between the two setups, or say that one is qualitatively better to my ears than the other for either the MDR-7506 or the HD 6xx. In retrospect I probably would have been about as happy just getting a second Fiio.

In your case, as Roppmaster said, I'd just go ahead and test your new headphones with your motherboard. If they get loud enough, don't have any noise, and sound good to your ears, then you're all set for now. If any of those things aren't true, then you can probably start with either the Fiio or the one xehpar recommends since that's also pretty affordable (https://smile.amazon.com/FX-Audio-Optical-Coaxial-Amplifier/dp/B072JJT7SF) and either of them will get the job done for you. I got the Fiio because I have their Bluetooth adapter and it's worked quite well for me so I feel comfortable with their products, and it's well-reviewed; I didn't come across the other one but on paper it has better specs than the Fiio. (The Fiio is smaller, uses micro-USB and draws its power from that without needing a separate power brick, so it's better for e.g. a laptop. It also has 3.5mm line out and headphones as opposed to the ports on the FX Audio, so depending on your equipment one or the other may be more convenient.)

In case you ever want to take a stab at some seriously high end IEMs again, but you notice that they're far too loud and have that hiss, look into the iFi iEmatch. It reduces gain on loud sources making even overpowering and hiss amplifiers play nice with IEMs like the Andromeda.

u/JimboLodisC · 1 pointr/vinyl

What will you be using for a headphone amp? Just curious in case we need to leave room in the budget for that.

It might be down to personal preference so if you can get your ears on any of these headphones in person then that'll go a long way in making a decision. If I'm looking at this as my own $300 and I were looking to buy, I'd be interested in checking out the following pairs:

  • Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO (always wanted a 770 or 990 for myself)
  • HIFIMAN HE-400I or HE-400S (the S model seems to be lower impedance so would need a good amp to drive them)
  • Sennheiser HD 600
  • Shure SRH1440
  • Bose QuietComfort 35 (wireless and noise-cancelling)

See if you can check any out at your local electronics store. Might consider buying used or setting up a deal alert at slickdeals.net to get a good price.

Also, I already own a pair of M50's and they're very popular. Sits at about $150.

I'm strongly conisdering getting this amp here:

http://www.amazon.com/SMSL-SA-160-Digital-Amplifier-Headphone/dp/B00JSNM1VQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1406096686&sr=1-1&keywords=SMSL+SA-160

Mainly because of the inclusion of a headphone jack. Since I'll be using a turntable, a headphone jack would be nice if my roommates don''t want to hear my music.

And those bookshelf speakers, they the best in the price range? Are they better than the Audioengines?

Not sure if this the place to ask, but can anyone help me find if my SMSL Sad-25 combo is good for a AKG K712 headphones?

This is the link for the combo dac-amp:

Thanks!

u/jbiz · 1 pointr/nexus4

Yeah, I bought one of these. It definitely helps, but it has no on/off switch. It uses a AAA battery and turns on as soon as you plug in something to the headphone-out. If you leave it plugged in (like in your car), the battery will die pretty fast.

There's probably other amps out there that are better, but the price is good on this one.

edit: found this one that recharges via (argh) Micro-USB. Luckily I have a dual-USB port cigarette lighter charger in the car.

u/fritobugger · 1 pointr/BudgetAudiophile

Those 731i are not bad speakers and are being underpowered by that Kenwood system.

The few quality combo amp/dac units in the UK start at 360 BP and go up from there. Like the Emotiva TA-100 and the SMSL A6.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/A6-COAXIAL-Integrated-Amplifier-Headphone/dp/B01KJJ43AO/

http://www.audiologica.co.uk/emotiva/emotiva-basx-ta100.html

https://www.audiovisualonline.co.uk/product/41784/emotiva-black-basx-ta-100-integrated-stereo-amplifier/

This combo unit is cheaper but not as nice with likely overestimated power:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Q5-Coaxial-Optical-Digital-Amplifier/dp/B015ZHZG1K/

https://www.amazon.co.uk/AD18-Bluetooth-Digital-Decoding-Amplifier/dp/B01MY96MKC/

I would suggest a separate amp and DAC because the selection of combo units at that price is not great.

If you can manage a full size integrated amp under your desk, try this since it has a remote and better than most desktop size units:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Denon-PMA720AE-Integrated-Amplifier-Black/dp/B007Y3OBIS/

If small is required then:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/SA-98E-TDA7498E-Stereo-Digital-Amplifier/dp/B015J0P7VM/

And a small DAC:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Decoder-Optical-Coaxial-Asynchronous-Converter/dp/B00PS0WLX6/

https://www.amazon.co.uk/M6-Asynchronous-Integrated-Headphone-Black/dp/B015J0QAN6/

https://www.amazon.co.uk/M3-Optical-Coaxial-Function-Decoder/dp/B019Y5TR6O

At 300BP there are some good choices for speakers:

Monitor Audio Bronze 2

Elac B6

Polk Audio S15

Maybe Dali Zensor 3 or KEF Q100 if you can find them at a good price.

u/kiwiandapple · 1 pointr/techsupport

Wireless headphones could work, however they use the same DAC as the wired. It seems like your sound card is broken, thus I would recommend a USB DAC & AMP

The benefit of this is that you can use it for multiple devices that support USB. So other PCs, laptops or even smartphones.

It also does sound a lot better compared to most on-board sound solutions.

u/shoWt1mE · 1 pointr/headphones

Hi guys, recently joined the club and am currently trying to sophisticate my audiophile game. I do not have any amp/dac yet, so I am looking for something that will suit my needs. I think I am set on the SMSL M6, however I want to be sure it can do what I need it to (before I order from across the globe).

So my question is:

Will the SMSL M6 be able to hook up to my 5.1's backpanel - and will it work?

Bonus question: If the Amp/Dac has "banana" outs, can I still hook it up to my soundsytem? Was thinking about splitting the RCA's, is that even possible/recommended?

Thanks!

u/iceterrapin · 1 pointr/headphones

I have hissing issues with my ciems, specifically the Noble Kaiser Encores and the Unique Melody Miracles.

When the source is my phone (Samsung Galaxy S8) and my laptop (HP Spectre x360) the hissing is pretty bad. I usually listen to tidal/spotify.

When the source is my desktop (I use O2 + ODAC) I don't have hiss at all.

I don't want to lug around a dac/amp so my question is would the IFI IEmatch or [EarBuddy] (https://www.amazon.ca/Ear-Buddy-Headphone-Optimizer-Travel/dp/B075PVVHF5) help? If so, which one of the 2 would you recommend?

Thanks for reading

u/arcsine · 2 pointsr/hardware

There's USB sound cards, which are good, there's M-Audio sound cards, which are mostly better for around the same cost, then there's external DACs, which are more or less the same thing as USB sound cards, only they attach to the digital out port on your existing sound card. They tend to have the best sound of all. Here's one for $80.

u/DestinyPvEGal · 1 pointr/audio

Oh ok. Sorry for bugging you, but would something like this work or would I need one of those bigger ones? I'm gonna keep looking for any settings I might be missing but if I can't find it that might just be an easier solution.

u/agmatine · 2 pointsr/Bass

I'd recommend this instead, unless you need the extra outputs: http://www.amazon.com/AP2BS-amPlug-Bass-Guitar-Headphone/dp/B00NAUKJTY

Plugs straight into the bass so less cables and more portability (powered by 2x AAA), has a tone control, and even a built-in drum loop/metronome with its own volume/tempo control. The metronome tempo is controlled with the volume knob and there's no display so you can't really get a specific tempo, but it's certainly more functional than a regular headphone amp, and probably sounds better.

There's also these if you want to go a step further and put the amp into the headphones: http://www.amazon.com/VOX-AMPHONESBASS-Active-Amplifier-Headphones/dp/B009703PZG

Haven't tried them but the headphones are made by Audio Technica so they're probably decent.

u/Gauloises_Foucault · 1 pointr/headphones

If Im not mistaken the Fiio has a built in battery. The one you linked would be an extra drain on your phone's battery instead. Thats one major difference, otherwise theyre probably very similar. Another aspect about amplifiers is that the so called noise floor is lower, especially for iems. Amps don't merely go louder, they do add some quality. If you want to make the largest gains, you probably should consider a dac/amp combo. The best one is the Oppo but that will set you back more than 300 bucks. I've read very good things about the XDUOO XD-05:
https://www.amazon.com/xDuoo-XD-05-Portable-Headphone-Amplifier/dp/B019SM6JUU

u/cbdublu · 2 pointsr/HeadphoneAdvice

I have two pair of open backs. The Sennheiser HD598SR and the Audio-Technica AD900X. They both are fairly close sounding but the AD900X does everything just a little bit better. The one thing the 598SR does better is the velour earpads. So I'd suggest those https://www.audio-technica.com/cms/headphones/996daf096c12ea16/index.html and a USB-C DAC https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07D3T7Q5F/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_csRZDbJSAH6GP so you can have that same DAC quality everywhere

I present for consideration this as another useful gadget portable smartphone BooomStick headphone amp enhancer. In-Line Wired Headphone Audio Enchancer Amp and Signal Processor right now as of this posting on sale from $9.99 to $8.39 via Amazon Prime - This used to sell for $100. Here is a review of Boomstick via YouTube. I purchased this for myself at the $10 charge when I had normal hearing because I had an old computer with a weak soundcard and not for my phone use. I keep it constantly plugged into the charger so I don't need to recharge all the time. (This is meant to be portable with your smartphone).

I found the BoomStick made my music sound great then pre-hearing loss and now that I lost hearing in one ear it helps amplify the fainter sounds. Using my home made 2E1 headphones which use Panasonic XBS bass drivers it pumps up the bass a lot. But I also used it before when I had my normal headphones in a mono-mix and it did help amplify the faint sounds.

Hey there. Sorry I thought I was making this a self post with text.

Just found this sub looking around for help on some inspiration I had the other day.

So, I have this

https://www.amazon.com/xDuoo-384KHz-Portable-Headphone-Amplifier-x/dp/B019SM6JUU

It's an xDuoo XD-05 portable headphone amplifier with a digital to analog converter.

The USB Type A (Device In) to send digital signal from a computer or phone through the internal DAC to amp recently stopped working. The Aux in and coax/digital in still work however.

I was sent a replacement PCB from CS. and everything is all good now.

But now I have this extra, still functional PCB That I had the thought of making a new case and setting it up with my desktop.

Since it charges via a USB micro I was hoping that could be my power source, but with the battery removed (swapped in to new board) it can't power up.

I could get a replacement battery: it's a 3.7v/4000mAh, but then I can't keep it on /charging all the time. Which defeats the purpose of being a desktop unit.

I'd like to know what I can and have to do to get the unit to turn on without the battery, so I can make use of it.

here are photos of the PCB

the budget dac/headphone amp/speaker amp seems to be a series of compromises to get what you want in one box...either lack of inputs, or a weaker speaker amp or headphone amp section...they are jack of all trades, master of none type units

the cheapest device I am aware of that meets all your criteria is probably the Teac AI101-DA: usb input, 2 optical inputs, 3.5mm analog input, speaker/subwoofer outputs, headphone output, but out of your price range at $299

the budget options that provide speaker and headphone outputs are Topping VX1, TP-32EX and TP-30MK2 however none of these devices has an optical input (TP32-EX has spdif input); they do all feature rca analog inputs however, but you would then be using your pc dac as opposed to the dac in this unit, if that is a concern for you

The Nintendo Switch has a noisy output. When I plug IEMs into it, I hear a noticeable hiss the whole time. I bought an ifi Audio ieMatch and the problem went away.

If you are not having any noticeable issues, such as distortion, hissing, noticeable noise floor, an external DAC will likely not improve the sound. I’d grab an iEMatch to ensure there are no output impedance issues as that can bloat, distort, and muddy up, especially the low end in sensitive headphones.
