175lb magnet and 1200lb tensile strength rope from Paracord planet on Amazon was what I was recommended.

Looked back and order was cheaper those two and gloves for about the cost of your magnet. Can always move up. What I was recommended below.

Rivers are still too high for kayaking safely so can't really speak on it but was not overkilling it and am totally not a strong enough person to pull out an ATM or safe. Figure I can get more later but if I do something stupid it's better to have a cheaper smaller magnet and I can just use my phone to get GPS coordinates to the bigger item that forces my hand on a pricier one.

magnet

rope

gloves

May have better advice from others.

u/climb-it-ographer · 2 pointsr/HomeImprovement

Strongly disagree. HGTV has made it extremely difficult to find actual barn door track systems, and instead you're left with $50 stamped steel garbage on Amazon.

I'm building a proper outdoor sliding door for my shed, and I'm using Unistrut (also called Unirail) with some ball-bearing trolleys. It's worth browsing sites like TractorSupply and ranching/farming suppliers to get actual durable hardware.

This system might also be a good solution; you'll need to get some more track and weld it all together into a continuous piece though.

Here's TractorSupply.com's door hardware page. Lots of good options here.

Depending on what level of cool-looking overkill you're after you could also go for a proper beam trolley riding on an I-beam: Beam Trolley. It shouldn't be terribly expensive and if you have access to a cheap stick welder you can pretty easily mount an I-beam up to some brackets and bolt it straight into the frame members of your barn.

If you're going to build a big door with heavy timbers or a steel frame you will want to keep the total weight in mind, as the consumer stuff won't hold up well to a 300lb sliding sail door on the side of your barn.

I have the top of a wide Powerade bottle taped onto the top with light green duct tape to help it not get snagged on anything. I also put the green duct tape all over the bottom to protect the magnet and make it easier to scrape little shards of metal off.

The best way to get some stuff is to just lightly bob it up and down along the bed of the water.

If you are going to magnet fish make sure to take a pair of work gloves because you definitely do not want to get cut by any of the metal shards.

Also, if you ever need to cut your magnet because it got caught in some rocks or something, take a picture or make a mental note on where you lost it so you can buy a cheaper magnet and just pull out your old one.

Come on down to r/magnetfishing and see for yourself. It's a pretty interesting, cheap, and easy hobby. I have a 330 lb magnet that I got from Amazon for about 15 bucks. I'm upgrading to an 880 lb one for 45 dollars. This would be a fine starter one https://www.amazon.com/Wukong-Powerful-Neodymium-Magnetic-Diameter/dp/B071LLWTVH/ref=mp_s_a_1_17?crid=1QDDIWU5SLOSZ&keywords=magnet+fishing&qid=1557250369&s=gateway&sprefix=magnet+&sr=8-17
I mostly just fine fishing lures and metal junk but I found a license plate from 1969 which was pretty cool.

u/jellicle · 9 pointsr/AskEngineers

There are two simple rules for lifting heavy things:

a) overengineer it

b) don't stand under it

Couple those with the Universal Rule of Everything:

c) someone has probably already solved the problem you're trying to solve

Commercial chain hoists are available (for lifting automobile engines out of vehicles, and the like) that will easily lift your weight in a safe and secure fashion, assuming they are affixed to something sturdy. They're even cheap.

http://www.kito.ca/catalog/home.php?cat=253

http://www.amazon.com/Boston-Industrial-Chain-Hoist-Lift/dp/B000INSJKC

http://acihoist.com/Products/Hand-Chain-Hoists.htm

So don't screw around with some jury-rigged thing when you can buy something made out of quality steel and designed for (nearly) exactly this application. Nor do you have to worry about the exact weight being lifted, since through the magic of pulleys (actually, gear ratios) in those hoists, you can lift a 1000-lb weight with 20 lbs of force applied.

You'll be standing there laughing as you lift that weight with your pinky finger, saying, "Thanks Reddit!"

Neodymium magnets in between the 200-600lb range are the most common, and are quite compact...I have a 330lb one and it is pretty compact...about half the width of the palm of my hand

I don't know how to do the math on the strength of the magnet, not sure how we measure that. I can do the math on the price though:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074BQ2X6G/

For me, it's $12.49, I bought one a month or two back, it's a very strong magnet.

That's awesome! I live in Canada so, Amazon . ca is more limited. There's a few 1700 pound double sided ones but the reviews say they're sketchy / like false advertising. There are some big single pull ones though, up to about 1200 lbs, but I didn't bother with that - yet.

u/large-farva · 3 pointsr/AskEngineers

They're called "spring balances" but i don't know of any strong enough to measure a winch load.

Edit :

440lbs, but on the right track :

Hello! Do you have any rivers, ponds or bodies of water near you? If so, you should try magnet fishing. Magnet fishing is where you have a magnet (Usually 100-500 pound test) attached to a rope, and throw it into the body of water, and drag it back into shore. You can find anything. you can get cheap magnets on Amazon, such as:

This, a 350 Pound test magnet, or This, a 290 Pound test magnet

It fits in with Metal Detecting very well.

u/absw · 3 pointsr/magnetfishing

You can get some good ones for way under that, for example: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01K38XA4G

Though you will need to factor in getting some rope and a karabiner.

u/Wolfy0 · 1 pointr/longboarding

100lbs strenght rope with a magnet like this.

u/TVK777 · 1 pointr/magnetfishing

As others have said, you are likely to be disappointed with a magnet's actual pull strength. For example, I have a 375lb magnet and I lose things that are not even close to that weight (thank god, I couldn't lift 375 lbs).

Things that reduce the magnet's pull strength are

  • Rust
  • Uneven surface
  • Odd/curved surfaces
  • Obstructions (mud, dirt, sticks)

In my opinion, go with as big a magnet that you can afford and that is within your rope's strength rating.

And remember, you might someday come across that submerged, flat piece of metal and it just might take your magnet. Just the risks of the game I suppose.
u/GongoozleGirl · 1 pointr/magnetfishing

I use 2 neodymium magnets @ 100 lb. pull each. They are stackable, meaning they combine strength when used together. Having said that, it pays off to get a few of those than to have all different sized magnets to suit any situation where the force to pull changes (i.e. if you are with someone on a pier v. alone on a fishing boat). This one is reliable. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01C6PB7C6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Things to consider:

Chain scale such as a hanging scale with a winch on some variety of track so you can just push it down to each keg. (probably cheapest and easiest)

Flow meters on each line so you know how much has come out.

Load cells under the keg to monitor its weight.

Matlab can be used to record the strain gauge results...

It's not electronic, I've got a gatorade bottle on the line like all the people in /r/magnetfishing suggested to make it sort of be able to wedge through objects but they do get lost. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073MPVZGW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
