I work part time as a FEMA/ NRT response unit.

The reports cites this as: https://earthquake.usgs.gov/regional/nca/wg02/losses.php

it would be devasastating for the first 48-72 hours on grounds that most folks wouldn't know how to get home.

EMS/ first response will NOT be available for the first 24/48.

Expectation realistically is ~a week out. during that time traige centers will be needed. folks have to get to the centers.

i could really go on doom and gloom all day long but instead lets focus on getting your self prepared.

The basic NERT/ earthquake prep is good but add a tarp and staple guns for the blown out windows. add noise canceling headphones/ or just ear muffs for kids cause there will be alarms and noises. debris filter like painters mask for particulates are crucial as well.

As far mission; to survive for a week.

My estimates as i am responsible for the Southern portion of San Francisco is only as good as the advisor that lets me know how many can really commit to the team.

as far as the 101/280 most portions will be rendered useless via obstruction and or destroyed. Both bridges stand well but a 6.5+ will give it the final exam.

older buildings if up to code should be alright (brick/ tougher foundation) the worrysome for me is the rent-lease/ apartments subletting situations that just added an extra water or tapped into the gas line.

tldr; infrastructure will be there just clogged. will need repairs and a band aid will take ~5 weeks for temp, ~4months perm.

i am on ambien right now and feel sleepy but when im awake i'd more than love to recommend yall some resources and classes and things to get in preparation.

for instance teach you how to shut off water/gas/elec then you teach it back to me. mayve go over non running water sanitations.

anyway dont worry, we are resilent and there exists hundreds of me to make best of what we have to this city.

edit:

Hey all, this is a expanded post in response to earthquakes that have been happening all over the place in the world. Some concerns have been raised and I feel like sometimes we take this for granted, or at least its in the back of our heads.

firstly, here are some official responses and resources from the State/ County/ Feds
http://sfdem.org/resources is also a great resource!

Here is the basic NERT or http://sf-fire.org/neighborhood-emergency-response-team-NERT

Schedule of training: http://sf-fire.org/training-schedule-registration

Red Cross recommended items to have and also basic check list: http://www.redcross.org/images/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m4240216_Earthquake.pdf PRINT THIS OUT, YOU MAY NOT HAVE INTERNET!

Here is the FEMA https://www.fema.gov/media-library/assets/documents/15092?id=3538 this is what they train reserve FEMA response teams about. The Cd-rom is available but I learned via the booklet.

secondly, instead of bombarding and regurgitating ill get to the point on what things I think are nice additions and why:

  • I have no idea how your family or living situation is but of course food (I have some MREs) and water on hand but also a filitration pump.

  • Water bladder that fits in a tub is also good https://www.amazon.com/Reservoir-Emergency-Storage-System-Gallons/dp/B00DOMOCCI like that

  • A heater that runs off of available fuels like a butane hot-pot hot plate. Or a jetfuel systems https://www.amazon.com/Coleman-2000020951-Butane-Stove/dp/B00FGPXVSM/ref=sr_1_6?s=outdoor-recreation&ie=UTF8&qid=1480011136&sr=1-6&keywords=camp+stove is what I have

  • Fire extinguisher that actually works! So many people don’t have one. Also be wary of the cheap ones that spray everywhere and you may have to live by it for some time.

  • (~$18) Ear muffs/ noise canceling for the kids AND you. Alarms will be going off and its really jarring. Tell them it’s a secret mission and you are all on an adventure. Re-assure them things are ok. Trauma through a natural disaster is horrible.

  • (~$15) Particulate filter – I like the 3m brand, and they are sold in packs. You never know what building material will be opened up when things get shaken. In addition to the fires.

  • (~$X) tarps cut to numerous shapes, sand bags, staple gun, duct tape, weather tape, sealant of some kind. It’ll be a barrier between your home and outside and it’s a +1 to making you feel a little more secure.

  • Safety goggles / good set of working gloves – there will be debris you have to navigate through seeing and using hands is very important

  • (`$20) Headlamp – I like the triple AAA kind for obvious sustainability. Having a light makes things must more easy when navigating and in doors. I also have a light lamp like a lantern.

  • Glow sticks/ chem lights. I use red to mark off bad areas or dangerous areas of the home. White/ purple chem lights for trails in home, and green for rooms occupied

  • A survival radio to get news and updates

  • CASH – there may be gouging or not but we don’t know if the Point of sales will be readily available

  • Medications – have a solid plan on how you will get your prescriptions if necessary, maybe talk to your doctor about an extra script. Or pharmacy personnel. I have an extra for my parents blood pressure medication and it was easy as asking for an extra that we rotate.

  • Two-way cheapo walkie talkies in case my family/ part needs to move around and still communicate to each other (baofeng is the rip off of the motorolla but still works) https://www.amazon.com/Baofeng-Warranty-Dual-Band-Radio-Improved/dp/B00HX03AMA/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1480011051&sr=1-5&keywords=baofeng like this

  • Kitty litter/ sawdust/ wood shavings – good for sucking up any spilled liquids that may be dangerous

  • Water pump. In case you have a floor level/ basement (I know you east coasters don’t think we have basements) but in case it floods and you shut things off you still need to be able to move that water out somewhere else.

  • Wheel barrow/ or mobile hand-stand dolly. You may need to move things like sand bags or debris

  • Learn where the emergency and main shut off for electricity, gas, water. Maybe do some maintenance and make sure its not stuck!

o Water heater – learn if it’s a gas or electric and if you need to turn it off
o Home heating – maybe learn about the oil reserve and how to clean and sanction off

  • LASTLY BUT EQUALLY IMPORTANT WHERE WILL YOU PUT THESE ITEMS? Do not place them in a danger zone and are in-accessible.

    realistic time tables:

  • 1st responders in EMS/ paramedics will be in short supply, the hospitals and clinics will be slammed.

  • Transport will be difficult as most roads in the Bay Area will be congested and people generally will be shocked and confused and attempting to get home..

  • The estimates from FEMA and State of California (http://sfdem.org/sites/default/files/FileCenter/Documents/67-EQ%20Plan%202008.pdf ) is an older copy and has been updated but I can’t find the 2015

  • Realistically, my supplies and plan is to survive in the increments of 48 for life threatening, 2 weeks sustainment, a month before my domicile is secured.

problem #1 – theres a really high chance YOU WILL NOT BE at your domicile/ home as most people commute. I highly recommend you think about a plan to either meet up with family OR some type of emergency plan as a rally-point.

problem #2 – exposure to the elements, your walls might come down, your windows may shatter, your roof may open up, please see the items I recommended on tarps/ staple guns

problem #3 – you are prepared and have all this stuff? Now what? Well be wary – cause what if theres a fire from your neighbors? What if theres a tsunami and flooding? Or some other after effect that can really mess with the plan? I highly recommend a “go-bag/ or bug out bag and a rally point for your family” maybe your community center/ school auditorium, look ahead for designated shelters.

*problem #4 – firearms. This is something to consider. I won’t get into political/ moral/ safety arguments but consider where they are stored and the most safe but useful way you can use this.

re-assurances – last muster from the FEMA, Coast Guard, National Guard, SF/ County resources we mustered in under 24 hours to respond. (please please keep in mind, responders take care of their situation first, that’s a reason to the high response time)**

There are hundreds of us (first responders and personnel dedicated to helping and rebuilding)
The operation tempo or ideas will be “recovery> stability > rebuilding”
So I’ve included a lot of information, if anyone wants to question it feel free to open for discussion. Or additional information.

It's a good, mild razor meaning it'd be a good option among safety razors. It also has a long handle which I understand is good for leg shaving.

You should swap out the gel for a shaving soap / cream and brush. This would improve your experience even with your current razor. I'd suggest a synthetic brush to start with as they require very little maintenance and prep. And I'd suggest a cream to start with they typically require less loading and and time to produce a decent lather.

The YouTube videos mentioned in another post should show you how to use the brush and cream to build a lather.

Here are some possibilities - I'm also based in the UK so this is where I'd buy from. Normally I'd buy most things from Connaught Shaving if they have them. Their website is terrible, but the selection and service are great.

Brushes:

  • Omega synthetic brush This is the cheapest brush you are realistically going to get. It's fine.
  • Yaqi synthetic. The knot (bristles) is denser and softer than the Omega, making it more pleasant to use. The same seller on amazon uk has a bunch of different Yaqi synthetics with various handle styles.

    Cream:

TOBS. TOBS is a pretty decent cream, is not too expensive and it comes in a wide variety of scents.

If you do buy a safety razor, you'll need blades for it. Everyone prefers different blades, and there's a lot of variation between them. The best thing to do is pick up a sampler pack of a variety of blades to try out before you commit to buying in bulk. For example this pack has two of most of the most popular blades.

I'd also suggest posting in r/ladyshavers to get more specific advice.

    Good luck!

Castor oil absolutely works and is a great natural and inexpensive way to grow your lashes but it TAKES TIME and you NEED to be consistent. Buy some cold pressed castor oil (this one has a container and lash brush which really helps with application). Every.single.night before you go to bed, massage the brush and wiggle it into your lashes especially at the base of your lash line. You probably won’t start seeing results until a month in. Don’t give up after a few days or weeks cuz you haven’t seen results yet. Once you do see them, they tend to really kickstart and grow quicker at that point. So the key is to just stick to it.

It takes time because it’s natural and has less chemicals in it to speed up the process like the lash boosts and the ones they sell super expensive in stores. Pick what you prefer but if you’re going for a more inexpensive approach and have patience, this will be a super effective method!

Hey, I was in the exact same boat! I used GrandLash for a long time and LOVED it, but stopped for a bit and went back to eyelash extensions (before I remembered that if I actually want them to look good I'd need to get them filled every freaking week, which I cannot afford).

I got Lavish Lash off Amazon and I've been using it for about a month, and I feel like my lashes are definitely longer. I took before pictures but haven't taken after shots yet, but they've definitely grown. I'm not sure yet if the growth will be as nuts as it was for me with GrandLash, but it took me about 2 months to see the "full" results from GrandLash so I'm going to give it another month.

But so far I would definitely recommend Lavish Lash...it was less than $30 ($28 when I bought it I think) and it seems to be working well for me.

Also like...you can check my comment history to try to vet that I'm not a shill for anything, not sure if that makes a difference but I have never been paid to talk about any product lol. Tbh I was skeptical of this one because it has SO many good reviews on Amazon and I'm sure a ton of them are fake, but I figured, hey, it's only $28 dollars if it doesn't work, so whatever.

u/cuzofurbutt · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Omg I have the perfect one for this!!

A deep waver I've been wanting to try out on my hair for forever! Although I guess the price has changed since I added it to my wish list...if I get picked in the raffle, can I win a gift card for that amount?

Or if that doesn't count, double lash serum.

Thanks for the contest love :)

Lift: EssyNaturals Eyelash Perm Kit, Professional Quality Lash Lift, Semi-Permanent Curling Perming Wave, Lotion & Liquid Set https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GC5721P/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_FfUWDb84C4398

What the instructions don’t tell you(and I’m sure you know this) You can’t get your lashes wet for 24 hours afterwards. Glad I watched a few YouTube videos to find this out!

u/squired · 4 pointsr/DIY_eJuice

I agree, I've never seen a decent package. Op, cancel if you can. Seriously, you don't need a "spoon spatula" or "Nicosorb Cartridge Filler", nor do you want their 30ml of 36mg Nic or 60ml PG/VG.

____

Here is an alternative setup to the one /u/IllustratedMann posted that mixes by weight (HUGE improvement over volume). His suggestion is great btw and very similar to what I started with. The following however is what I recently recommended to my brother.

  • 950ml VG - $13
  • 950ml PG - $13
  • 120ml 60mg Nic (PG) -$23
  • Scale - $15
  • 50x 10ml Bottles - $7
  • 12x 10ml Flavorings - $25
  • Latex Gloves - $2 (get from Walmart)
  • 3 Large Squeeze bottles - $2 (get from Walmart travel section or Hobby Store painting section)

Total: $100 (includes shipping | all are US, community-darling vendors)

That will get you a true hobby-level setup and enough nic to make ~600ml of 12mg juice with plenty of supplies to spare.

    ___

Also guys, the flavors you start with are less important than how you use them. There are several schools of thought, but I highly recommend ordering the flavorings for at least 2 highly rated user recipes that you find here (especially clone recipes), and play towards tweaking them to your preference. That way you start with amazing juice on day one, and your project juices are fun, not desperate.

The community is rapidly maturing and you no longer have to reinvent the wheel. You absolutely can, but get some ADV in the cupboard before you take that on. This comment talks a bit more about that.

Here is another hotbed of crowd-sourced info. Make an account and explore.

I actually use this weird lil' serum and it works really well. Granted, I do use it on my eyelashes, but it says you can use it on your eyebrows too?? So maybe you can give that a shot idk. I know it's pretty pricey, but it's seriously worth it in the long run (At least in my case). I ordered one bottle and it's only half-empty after 6 months of use. Hope that helps!! :)

Does anyone have experience using eyelash serums after an eyelash perm?

I've recently purchased the Etude House eyelash serum (at an amazing price I couldn't resist.) Many people here seem to have had amazing results with it and I would like to as well!

However, I recently permed/lifted my eyelashes (https://www.amazon.com/Dollys-Eye-Lash-Wave-Lotion/dp/B008RN1QQO with this kit specifically,) and was wondering if anyone has experience using both.

Would the serum perhaps make the lift weaker and not last as long? I can't tell if the nourishing qualities would have an effect at all on the chemical curl or not. Any input is appreciated! I asked the question on Amazon to previous buyers as well.

u/Wompitywompwomps · 1 pointr/MakeupAddiction

I was looking into getting eyelash extensions and at the recommendation of the salon, used lashmd instead. I'm usually wary of anything promoted for "use this simple thing and get x growth!" It takes a month or so to start seeing effects but I am honestly baffled. I have started telling everyone, since I've always had somewhat short/thin lashes, they now are almost too long. Here's a link to Amazon
Good luck!

I’ve heard Babelash is good. I’m asking for it for my bday, so I haven’t tried it yet. Maybe someone here can chime in on it.

I highly recommend Hourglass Vanishing stick for wedding makeup. I like Hard Candy Glamoglauge high coverage concealer in Ultra Light for lightlighting and tan for concealing. Then I use Rimmel Stay Matte powder over the highlight and contour and foundation to tone everything down and set it. I think that NYX Matte Setting Spray is as good as UD All Nighter, so either one is worth it. You should definitely use a setting spray on your wedding to keep it all in place. I wouldn't bother with individual lash extensions but I can recommend a few full size ones: here and here. I don't like translucent powder since it tends to flash back which is why I use Rimmel Stay Matte. Maybelline Fit Me Powder also flashed back.

u/just1nw · 2 pointsr/Showerthoughts

They actually sell water bags that fit into a standard tub to allow longer-term water storage. Pretty neat.

I'm glad to hear you are enjoying it. For the price it sounds like you can't go wrong with Yaqi (despite me having no clue because I have not even shaved with a DE razor yet). I ordered this brush simply because it was the cheapest Yaki on Amazon. Is it similar to yours?

I wanted to see if I could grow my lashes for my wedding, so I started using Babe Lash serum which I bought on Amazon. I was pretty sure it wouldn't work, but since it was for my wedding I was willing to try it. I was shocked to see that it totally worked! My lashes used to be so short and they have grown so much! It definitely took at least a month to start seeing any noticeable difference, so be aware of that. I tell people about this stuff whenever I get the chance because I was so shocked that it worked for me!

I messed up my eyebrow so bad that I wanted to hide at home or give myself bangs. I used this and within 6 weeks they were back to normal.

Babelash Serum

This stuff is incredible to help lashes grow longer. I assume would help with regrowth as well.

i'm using this lash dye and this perm kit from amazon! I did the tint a few weeks ago and you basically dip a mascara wand in the dye, comb it through your lashes and leave it on for 10 mins. It definitely makes a difference but i'm hoping the perm will make them stand out even more since it'll keep them curled

I've tried a handful on Amazon, and [this one] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MQS7GFT/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_w9azCbT6BSN3H) was the best.

wow Amazon really jacked up the prices on those, last August I got this bundle with two of the Anker batteries and Anker's external charger for $28.

I make sure to cleanse and wash my eyebrows everyday, and once a week I put [castor oil ] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071RD69HX/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Qq8OCb3QJAEPT) on my hair including my eyebrows and just give it time :)

How long have you been doing this? What kinds of effects have you seen, and how soon and how powerful? And what brand do you use, if you don't mind me asking?

I just recently started putting castor oil (NOW) on my scalp, like you do ― when I don't have plans (leaving it in for hours) and sometimes just before the shower when it's wash night. Also I've been putting castor oil on my eyelashes (with this) and eyebrows (with a Q-tip). I think I might be seeing an effect in growth, but I'm really not sure if it's a coincidence, since I've only used it sparingly for a couple weeks!

Anker battery packs and charger. I pretty much never think about battery life.

Oh battery's low? Swap for the spare. Forgot to charge the spare I brought yesterday? Well there's still another one.

Not AB but I use an eyelash growth/protection serum that we can get relatively cheap in Sasa/Bonjour called Mavala Double Lash from Switzerland. As with most lash serums, it takes a while to notice the difference... took me about 3 weeks of consistent usage, but it's worth it! I'd say my lashes are now at least 20-30% longer and thicker now :D

For in my car -

If you rotate the supply enough, it won't matter. Personally - I use plastic - if by chance they do freeze in the car, I don't have to worry about the bottles breaking, but that may not be an issue where you live. They never stay in this kit for more than 1 winter - and I have water bottles with me at all times in the spring/summer/fall.

At my house -

Right now I just have a few cases of plastic bottles that sit in my basement in a dark corner. I also have some food grade plastic containers that are for camping that are specifically for water storage, and one of these for each bathtub..

For myself, I just think glass takes up too much room, but I see where the concern is. If you have to room and aren't worried about freezing ever, go for glass.

I suffer with you! It doesnt matter how many different types of water proof mascara I use, the type of curler or even me heating it up. After a couple of minutes my lashes look sad and boring. My solution? I go get eyelash perms. YES! You can go get a lash lift somewhere. It lasts about 6-8 weeks, because that's how long it takes your lashes to grow out. It costs me around $60. They look beautiful, and they completely change the look of my eyes. If you cant afford that, look into [this](Tetyana naturals Eyelash Perm Kit, Professional Quality for Lash Lift https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GC51TYL/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_iGTVDbVE7WPB2.)

I am yet to buy that, but read the reviews and look at some youtube videos on how to do it.

Checked out the Amazon reviews on this and until everyone knows the ingredients more fully, I'd say it's not worth it: https://www.amazon.com/Babe-Lash-POWERFUL-Enhancing-Beautiful/dp/B01C2EFBZU?th=1#customerReviews

If it's this product, I'd switch to plain ole castor oil. The product contains isopropyl cloprostenate, which is a synthetic compound that mimics prostaglandins, similar to the prostaglandin analogues in Latisse and other Rx lash serums. It makes me really uncomfortable to see people using stuff like this while not under supervision of a doctor.
