If it is a council house, ask about getting a security grid. It will make your house stand out if no-one else has it, but they will stop petrol bombs, bricks, paint bombs etc from coming through your window. I have them on all the windows at the back of my house and they've worked before.

For the letter box you can get things like this that will stop anyone from trying to put anything through to ignite it.

Security doorbells are also useful, like this. They connect to your phone and allow you to see who is at your door without answering.

Good locks, working fire alarm and preferably having your bedroom in the least accessible place with a fire escape type window are useful tips.

I live here too, i don't know how to best deal with those people who may want to harm you, they're going to want to do it regardless. I'm not sure how much good it would do, but have you considered moving to a different council area?

They may be "nice", but they're impractical. They have a tiny slot in the top or on the front, and a huge place that opens so the customer can get their mail. They are a pain for carriers. The slots are typically only large enough to get a few letter in at a time. Oh and magazines and large envelopes? Forget it. Get a decent mailbox. Preferably something large enough to fit a standard, folded over magazine.

In the rural area my Dad lives in, most people use a contraption like this, with a longer arm. His box still gets dinged up, but it stays standing.

I've seen one of these on a mailbox in my neighborhood. It flips up after the mailperson has opened and closed the box. This allows the person in the house to see if the mail has been delivered yet. Those knobs are actually screws, and if you could loosen them just enough you might be able to fit a draught excluder under them

I just talked to a customer about this yesterday as I was the aux on the route. He said he's informed the regular carrier about the issue but the carrier didn't make a note or card on their case about it for the other carriers. Misdeliveries like this are a result of bad casing.

Just don't get anything with a small heavy slot that has to be lifted and make sure it's a larger box or you'll just annoy your carrier and end up having to pick up more of your mail at the office

Nowhere in the description does it state that it's a security mailbox or even mention the word "security" in the description.

How about a Jumbo Mailbox? That meets postal regulations.

There're some flags you can buy to attach to an existing mailbox here and here.. the mailbox I had growing up had one built-in though. No idea where we got it.

Then make it more difficult, fitting a door bolt and letterbox guard will stop most people while you are in the house.
