In general, it's a good idea to have the following if you follow the ATGATT philosophy:

  While you may be tempted to save as much money, I wouldn't spend less than $100 on a DOT helmet, at least for your primary helmet. Amazon has some nice helmet choices. I have two different sets of gloves, reinforced biker gloves and winter gauntlet gloves.

  As far as boots, I personally think it doesn't matter what type of boots you get. You can spend $100+ on reinforced biker boots, but I bought a pair at Walmart for $30 that are slip resistant. So I can wear them to church, work, and when biking. I tend to like things that are multi-purpose like that. But go with what fits your style.
  
  Leather Jacket I got this jacket, and absolutely love it! Way better than a tactile jacket in my opinon. A leather jacket is going to be a good choice as it's going to provide more protection, and is better for the winter as well. On the other hand, a tactile jacket will be slightly less hot (though I feel that the leather jacket is cooler than my tactile jacket but I'm probably having selective bias because I like it more)
  
  For a helmet, I recommend getting a DOT modular helmet. Amazon has a pretty good selection, but you might want to consider going to dedicated bike websites to find something else. Revzilla is pretty good on helmets.

Any old bike cover will generally do you just fine. Look for ones that have at least 1 strap connector underneath, to make sure the wind doesn't take it.

GoPro - chin-mounting is great, but handlebar mounting means it's easier to run power to it from the bike itself for infinite battery life. For bar mounting, I'd just grab their handlebar clamping accessory, for $23 it's better now than most aftermarket solutions. The Session 4 is super easy to use, but if you get the Session5, and do run external power to it, you have to remove that little external door for waterproofing and it's easy to lose, so keep track of it.

Otherwise for chin-mount to the helmet, I really like these guys, it's super effective. Attach the arms to the center piece, remove the 3M tape covers on all 3 parts, and press the middle on to the helmet first before pressing the arms down. Very secure mount in my humble opinion, and extra easy.

Helmet: Scorpion EXO-R410 Amazing price to feature value. Snell 2015 rated, easy swap visors, super comfortable, great airflow, etc.


Glasses: Native Eyewear Throttle These are amazing slim profile shades. I've worn Native for years, and their lifetime warranty is excellent. My set came with additional lens colors as well, not sure if they still offer that or not. Hardly feels like I'm wearing anything on my face. Super resilient frame and polarized lens composite material. Had a good size rock hit the lens once and only barely chip the surface. Can be found on sale occasionally throughout the year as well.

I use one of the modular ones on my 8 mile commute in winter because my face gets too cold otherwise. Just a cheap one from Amazon but it's certified and definitely provides more protection than a bike helmet. Works pretty well if you bike casually and don't exert yourself too much such that you get hot/helmet can get foggy. If you get a higher quality one with more airflow and fog prevention like a pinlock it'll probably work better.

Positive is better sun protection and warmth in winter/cold environment. (besides the obvious of better head protection)

Negative is heat and lost peripheral vision in the vertical direction. So if you look down at your handlebars (check speed, phone mount, check mirrors etc) you have to turn your head all the way down so you can't really see the road in your peripheral vision the way you would normally be able to.

Seeking gear shop recommendation/advice in Vancouver

I’m just about to buy my first set of gear. I’m going to be riding a yellow DRZ400SM, 80% road and 20% dirt logging roads. I’m interested in hot weather but waterproof gear as I’m going to primarily be riding in hot summer environments with occasional rain (BC, Canada, and Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam).

I’m looking for your best recommendations for both shops to visit and try on helmets, pants, jackets, boots, and gloves, as well as individual recommendations on each of those gear components. Budget for gear in USD is as follows:

Helmet: $500-$650

Pants: $300

Jacket, preferably leather but willing to look at mesh: $500

Boots: $200-$300

Gloves: $50?

So far I’m interested in these Dainese Drake Air D-Dry Pants and Shoei’s GT-Air in Brilliant yellow but obviously the helmet will totally depend on what fits.

Again, all gear should be oriented toward staying as cool as possible in hot weather. Any and all recommendations welcome. Thank you!

It's just a graphic, I needed a helmet quickly for my MSF course and this one had pretty good reviews and was pretty cheap, I know I shouldn't go cheap on a helmet I plan on upgrading soon.

However it is pretty nice, surprisingly not much wind and the airflow is pretty good, fits well too without being very top heavy. I just did a 160 mile highway trip two ways over the weekend and it felt great.

I had a white bell (or HJC) full face that was probably 150-200 new.. perfect.. I LOVED the white because it was easy to see on rainy days and darker nights.

Also, white is a pretty classic color, so if you get one that's got a pretty simple shape and style to it, it looks good. But that's all just preference. Honestly check on amazon for "motorcycle helmet" pull up full face options and sort by avg. customer review to find a good one. Reviews are the best.

Another few things would be to find out what the driver uses for brake pads, brake fluid, rotors, oil filter, etc., as those can be pricey and nice gifts. (I use Hawk DTC-60 front, HP+ rear pads, Motul RBF-600 fluid)

Portable battery powered air pump for tires I have one very similar to this. It's cheap and great to use for adjusting pressures before sessions.

A decent tire pressure gauge This is the one I have and have used for several years and I have been very happy with it.

A subscription to Grassroots Motorsports

Torque wrench, +200 ft/lbs This is the one I have been using for a few years and it works well.

I've got lots of other ideas for tools and such; specific socket sets, impact gun & sockets, special bits for your car, magnet, flash lights/head lamp/stick light, channel locks, stubby sockets, various wrenches, extensions, breaker bar, bits, allen wrenches, vice grips, pry bars, adapters, pliers, cutters, etc that would be good to put on your list if you don't have them in your kit.

i want to use the boosted power, i have a voltmeter, and i have try to measure the boosted ESC for a power source for the led lights, but my knowledge is limited, already change some broken cables successfully (i live in mexico, i can't send the board to warranty, so i fix it my self).

I personally use an HJC CL-17, it's both DOT and Snell certified and is super comfortable. It doesn't include a chin curtain but since I live in a usually hot place I have no issue with that, it helps with the air flow. One thing though is that if you choose the matte black option you need to be very careful because it scratches easily, there are plenty of options for color though.

What I also like about the helmet is that it has plenty of room for speakers and a microphone, like the ones that come with a Sena bluetooth set.

I've been using this HJC for almost two years now and would recommend it to anyone.

Not if it's something I want. Fuel savings on a motorcycle vs an average car is going to save more money than 2k would make on interest so there is literally no downside. Is it as cost effective as a 300? No. But that doesn't mean it's hurting me at all to do it this way and it's something I quite enjoy much more than I would a 300.

It's DOT certified so why did you (likely) spend as much as 5x more than you need to.

I like my LS2 Strobe modular helmet for winter riding. It’s super comfortable and the modular features are really nice to have. Only downside is it’s pretty noisy on the highway from wind even with the vents shut. I think it was only like $140 on Amazon. I wear a generic black 3/4 when it’s above 50 degrees, if I wear one.

EDIT: The XXXL I got is $209 now, the large is $239. Might be a D/C model or something, the only sizes listed are L and XXXL.

Let's not forget wearing protective gear no matter what level you are. There's a feeling in the skateboard community that experts don't need to wear protective gear as much because it looks silly and restraints movement to freely ride. I'm no expert nor beginner but I've found that motorcycle gear looks cool and gives the best protection. I'm sporting Jeans with sas pads tactical sniper military gloves two different types of helmets full fac and head shell and a black hoodie with pads that make me look like total buff badass.

While it isn't a full-face helmet, I have a Sparx FC-07 that I really like. Sparx is sometimes called the "high end of inexpensive helmets." I find the fit and finish to be excellent. It's my favorite of the 5-6 helmets I've owned. It isn't still sold, but the HJC IS-33 is similar, and is listed by some random lawyer as being one of "The 5 safest motorcycle helmets of 2014." (I have no idea where he got that.)

I love the modular helmet. It has a drop down visor which is great. The speakers work quite well. It will do music by default then when a call comes in, it switches to that. The microphone doesn't work to well above 40 mph due to wind, but whatever. Also it does helmet to helmet communication.

It also works quite well. Together they have a pretty good range. I can put the transmitter upstairs and go down into my basement before the signal starts cutting out.

Great choice! I have a RF-1200. Moto Rad chin mount works great with a gopro. I've heard great things about the Sena camera/speaker set up too.

There you go. yes its cheap in comparison to real high end motorcycle helmets but its a darn good helmet. I think it looks cooler being full faced anyways. And yes "4lbs is heavy for a helmet" people say but unless your neck is a twig its fine i promise. its the only style helmet i wear.

I went with an IV2 Helmet from Amazon. I'm guessing that the same chinese manufacturers supply Cyclegear with helmets that get the Bilt logo and a price hike.

It's really pretty quality. Its got removable everything, and the joint that locks the chin bar down is a metal connector. There isnt any obnoxious wind noise that has bothered me either. Seals up really good. It's a bit heavy, but most modular helmets are from what I've heard. Comfortable inside, and less than 60 bucks before shipping.

Cyclegear sells the exact same helmet with a Bilt logo for around 70, which is cheap as shit if you pick it up in the store.

I'd go try it on, but I love mine. I even bought some cheap headphones on amazon and added them into the little ear pockets and wrapped the cord up under the padding so I can jam to tunes on my phone while commuting. I'd buy another if anything happened to it.

I got these. They are thin, and sound pretty good. Built for helmets. I wrap up the cord and tuck it in the back of my helmet when I'm not using them. Don't even notice it. I've recommended these to a few of my friends, and they are not disappointed either.

I also take a motorcycle to work and throughout the day -- It's my only vehicle so I'm constantly taking my helmet on and off. It's been about a year, and I haven't had the problem you describe. What model of motorcycle helmet do you have? Mine is the kind where the entire face flips up, rather than just the visor (not sure if describing it well), so when I put the helmet on no part of it comes in contact with my face. (This is not the helmet I have, but it's a similar design.)

I used to wear CeraVe AM as my morning sunscreen, but recently switched to a physical sunscreen. I was somewhat concerned that the physical sunscreen would be more likely to rub off but so far no problems.

Overall, I'd recommend CeraVe AM as a good sunscreen, I think that the miracle suggestion you're looking for might be to look into different helmets that don't scrape against your face rather than a different sunscreen.

That plus earplugs might be enough. Possibly more effective than a new helmet, certainly cheaper, and if you like the helmet you already have...

Proper fit would be the most important thing to focus on. Get a Snell/ECE Full face (or modular) to minimize noise and maximize protection.

I would be worried about long term hearing damage from the extended exposure to wind noise. I never ride without earplugs, either some custom fit plugs I got at a gun show, or from a [box of disposeables](https://www.amazon.com/Howard-Leight-Honeywell-Disposable-MAX-1/dp/B0013A0C0Y/ "A box will last you for years"). You may also want to look into a Windjammer to further reduce wind noise.

To help with visual acuity, consider getting multiple visors and a helmet where changing visors is easy. It's simple enough to try visor removal and replacement in-store to weed out the bad ones. Think dark smoke when it's sunny, yellow for glare, and pinlock-equipped for when it's foggy. You don't really want to mess with goggles for the highway.

I'd stay away from brimmed dual-sport style helmets, the brim can act as a sail and cause discomfort at high speeds.

Consider adding a Bluetooth intercom system if you want to listen to podcasts, navigation prompts, or other entertainment during your long trips. Higher end helmets can be fit with nice, integrated systems.

For color choice, statistically, wearing a white or hi-vis colored helmet will tend to reduce SMIDSYs.

I've heard some good things about Windjammers or similar helmet skirts. I have yet to try one though. Personally, I get a lot of wind noise from right behind my jaw, so I get the sense that something like this would cut a lot of it out.

Really helps in blocking wind noise, but keeps the main noises still there. I use the rev noises to clutch shift a lot as my bikes clutch cable isnt the best at the moment, so definitely really helps with this.

Speaking of rain gear, I would recommend a "Vee Wipe" like this

It's really very good at getting rain spatter off your visor in low speed city commuting, a necessity in the UK at least.

It's pricey for all that is it, but worth it imo.

I have heard people only say good things about them reducing wind noise.

I use a vee wipe with rain x, I have a bit of rain x in a make up spritz bottle because I'm a fancy lad and it's portable. I often ride at night in the rain couple of times in cthulu inspired fog. For the fog maybe look into auxiliary lights the projector type that go round the forks. Biggest issue is oncoming lights being defused if their high beams are on.

I use THIS method after testing numerous ways, and quite satisfied.

get a chin curtain insert for the bottom of the helmet. It helps to cut wind noise. It's cheaper than anything else and you can try it without changing your earbuds (for now)

The opening around your neck is usually the most significant source of wind noise in a helmet. If your helmet has a removable chin curtain and you remove it, put it back in. If you don't have a neck curtain, before getting a new helmet you can try a Windjammer.

Modular helmets are often quieter specifically because the neck curtain on most of them can come in closer than helmets you have to pull over your head.

I also might try different ear plugs. The simple foam ones actually have the highest level of projection of anything out there when properly inserted. Custom molded ones aren't necessarily superior.

My friend I go performance driving a ton in the mountains. Recently, we hit the side of the mountain and almost flipped the car over. We're okay, only cosmetic damage, but it really put everything into perspective.

Right now, he has that same helmet (in medium...I have a large head) and he's planning on purchasing 4-point seatbelts. I know for a fact that we cannot skimp on safety!

Unfortunately, racing helmets are too expensive, but these type of helmets will suffice.
