It's all part of the quitting journey. Discovering new hobbies is just part of quitting because once you quit then you'll just have more hours free in the day (and night). If you don't try new hobbies then you're more likely to slip back into it again.

I try to stick to free hobbies or hobbies that are like buy it once then it's mostly free until you decide you want to upgrade, which might be often depending on what it is, lol! :)

I've really focused on making my healthy a priority, so I've taken on things like:

-Fitness. I bought some handweights, a medicine ball, a yoga mat (for stomach exercises mostly) then I just started some basic exercises, doing cardio and just generally trying to be outside more. I find that being outside generally helps me more than going to a gym (cheaper too) or doing exercises inside because it motivates me, so I can't give up as easily.

-Bicycling. It's fun, it's exercise, it's transportation all rolled into one.

-Swimming. Love the water, it's almost like meditating for me. Good exercise too.

-Cooking/Nutrition. Reading labels has become my version of reading stats, skill trees, etc. and it helps me challenge myself. Eating better is a reward in itself and if you like eating then trying new foods, spices or tools (grill, pan, oven, etc) then you'd probably like this. Food shouldn't cost you much extra either. Check out /r/eatcheapandhealthy, /r/crockpot, /r/vegetarian (even if you are not) and their sidebars. :)

-Metal Detecting, Magnet Fishing or /r/Geocaching . I feel like these are really forgotten about or people don't really know that they exist. /r/metaldetecting is like treasure hunting, exercise and cleaning up the environment all in one. /r/magnetfishing is the same thing, except you're casting a magnet and rope into the water and seeing what you can find (good arm workout too lol). Neither of these are expensive to get into (more than $200). Just be careful of bridges, etc when magnet fishing.

-Gardening/Landscaping. There are /r/gardening and /r/landscaping subreddits too. My rototiller is great for like digging up weeds or getting the ground ready for planting. They're surprisingly fun to use too. I want to use my rototiller even if I don't have to, lol! :)

-Social groups. Use anything and everything to just get out of the house. Use meetup.com, use the craigslist 'Community' section (be safe), find the local subreddit for your city because I can almost guarantee something exists. If you're not in a relationship then try joining a dating site, even if it's just for friends.

Challenge yourself to become better, you're the protagonist in your own story now. Video games come and go all the time and there will ALWAYS be another game.

The Bin

  • I like the design: simple, low-cost, effective.
  • Add a bar of some kind on the top; maybe rip a length of scrap board and place one in each cut notch. This will add stability to the top panels.
  • Don't let this bin get to high. You have no way to remove side panels and turning the pile in the bin will be difficult if it gets too high.

    Leaves

  • If you read a recent post in the past few days, I mentioned the leaf mulcher. I use this one. Breaking them in small bits increases surface area and allows bacteria easier access to the inside of the leaf (some leaves have a waxy outer coating that slows the composting process.)

    Manure

  • Manure is pretty close to perfect in terms of composting. With a C:N ratio of about 27 it will do pretty well on it's own. the problem with Manure is that it tends to stink because no air can get to the center of a manure pile. Without air, anaerobes take over and make bad smells.

    Composting it All

  • Here's where we get a little nasty: All the manure you have needs to be broken up into smaller pieces; whether you want to do it by hand or with a tool is up to you.

  • It's best to wait until you can make a pile that is close to a cubic yard (3x3x3 ft)

  • use a ratio of 1:1 (by volume) of manure to dry leaves (unshredded.) this tends to be about a ratio of 15:1 (by weight) Most people don't weigh their compost, so backyard DIYers use a volume estimation. If you have 1 cuft of manure, then use 1 cu ft of dry leaves (unshredded.) This will give you a ratio of pretty damn close to 30:1.

  • Layer the manure and leaves, spraying the layers as you go with the hose (not to wet, though!)

  • when your pile is done, the process begins! Your pile temp will spike within 24 hours. Then it will maintain for a few days and steadily decrease. There are a few methods to be employed:

  1. The lazy method: Simply do nothing. It will do everything on it's own but the process will take a long time and the end product will be sloppy and coarse.

  2. The "typical" method: When the temperature drops to 120F, turn the pile -inside out, outside in. Continue this until the temperature no longer gets above 120. Then turn and mix the pile into a final bin to "cure" for about 2 months. For best results, sift the final product through 1/4" screen. Add this material to your soil.

  3. Hot method: Most people don't have enough starting material to make this really feasible. If you have a good strong source for horse manure and a lot of straw, you could do this easily. It takes about 3 weeks to make goo compost with this method. I provided a link below, but the process it layer into pile, let sit for 4 days, then turn every second day for 2 weeks.

Most people use the typical method in a 3-bin system: bin 1 = active pile, bin 2 = turned pile, bin 3 = curing pile. I employ this method. Once I get my new 3-bin setup completed, I will be posting pictures of compost at different stages. IN the meantime, here is a picture of potting soil components I use: Left to right: dolomitic lime, perlite, compost (the stuff I make), peat moss.

For added fun, use the compost going into the curing pile as bedding for worm bins. It is rich with food for them (you can add more, of course) and they will pass all of it through them. The end result is a nice, black, humus. I hope to employ a worm bin soon; it's on my list.

This calculator can help with ratios

Get a compost thermometer to help monitor the temperature

This site has a good description for hot composting and a list of ratios

In general, I'm a "preventative" type guy. I don't like killing anything that could affect the ecosystem (which is basically everything). I know that sometimes it's not possible to just use preventative methods but here's my $0.2

Most hornets/wasps are very territorial, so sometimes putting up things like this will help. It's worked on a few client's homes. It doesn't even have to be as fancy as that. I've seen some people put up Chinese lanterns painted gray that have had success. Not sure about subterranean wasps/hornets though, they might be tricker.

Bees are generally good (pollinators) so if you have a big yard, you could "encourage" them to move to a part of the yard that you frequent less. Things like planting flowers that bees love can keep them occupied elsewhere. Or if the problem is serious, find a local beekeeper. I've worked with a few to move hives, so that way the bees keep pollinating, but there's less chance of incidents (though in general bees that can only sting once are pretty difficult to make angy enough to sting you)

Snakes I'm not too sure about, as I pretty rarely encounter them (and most of the snakes here are nonvenomous). Those sonic emitter things seem to basically do nothing, as my dad put them all around his garage and he's still found pine snakes lurking about (as well as their food sources). My best guess would be to try to reduce/remove potential food sources. So combating mice, chipmunk and rat populations would probably help. Things like sealing up garbage better, putting down traps, etc. Also, snakes are exothermic, so reducing the number of cool places they can go (like hidden places under rocks), and sunbathing areas (areas like rocks or completely unshaded patios) might help, but I'm guessing not to a very effective level.

  1. Yes and No. The pressure washer is a tool like any other and is not necessary to detailing you car. Pressure washers really only give you two things. Control, and power. Control over how much water is used and where and power of that waters pressure. They're are hugely useful for tackling bigger jobs and making maintence washes a breeze. A regular hose can achieve the same clean as a pressure washer. This is the one I use "https://www.lowes.com/pd/Greenworks-1800-PSI-1-1-GPM-Cold-Water-Electric-Pressure-Washer/1000604813". It works excellently, doesn't break the bank and comes with a good host of accessories.

  2. OMG YES. They're fun, they work, and they make life easy. Again, this is the one I have "https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CGG67PY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1". Great for the money.

  3. I do wheels, trim, then paint from the top down but use whatever method works for you and properly addresses the needs of your vehicle.

  4. NO SPONGES. EVER. FOR ANY REASON. Not even a microfiber sponge. They lock in dirt and keep it, which causes damage to any finish you could be hoping to achieve. Get yourself a mitt, I preffer one I can out my hand in but whichever is fine. I'd link my mitt but they can be bought pretty much anywhere for cheap so no big deal.

5.Wash, decontaminate, clay, then spray. Spray wax is just wax in a liguid form and goes on pretty much the same as paste wax. They don't always last as long but work for DIY detailers like us.

  5. Clay works by being sticky as all hell and literally pulling baked in filth out of your cars paint/wheels. USe with a lubricant and wipe gently in a back and forth motion until the surface feels smooth as glass. Do small 2X2FT areas at a time. Clay as needed.

Hope this helps. Feel free to check out my youtube for a couple videos I've started making.

Hello fellow cheesehead!

I agree with the others here that a sprinkler is not where you should start. I made a conscious effort last year to monitor rainfall totals and used a sprinkler whenever there was less than 1" of rain per week. It helped keep my lawn a bit greener than the neighbors who didn't water, but not a huge difference.

If you're just getting started, I would recommend some other purchases first:

  1. Collapsible Gardening Bag - cheap and doesn't take up much space when collapsed. I use mine all the time for weeding or collecting fallen sticks/rock/etc before mowing.

  2. Broadcast Spreader - if you're going to be throwing down fert, pre-emergent granules, or seed and have a lawn of any size, I think a broadcast spreader is a worthwhile investment. If you have a bigger lawn, you might opt for a larger one, but this model works fine for my average-sized lawn.

  3. Stand-up Weeder - this was for my wife whose knees aren't great, but I've used it a few times and it works fairly well.

  4. Mower Blade Sharpener - Some people like taking their mower blades to get professionally sharpened, but this hand tool is pretty inexpensive and gets my blade pretty sharp. You'd be surprised how much of a difference a sharp mower blade can make.

Other than that, my only other piece of advice is to not neglect pre-emergent and grub preventer. Pre-emergent has saved me a ton of weeding and the one year I didn't use grub preventer I lost a sizable patch of lawn near my mailbox to grubs, which now I need to seed this spring.

Good luck with the lawn this year!

> Do you have any pictures, really interested in this idea.

Photos.
We just rake/blow up a pile and run them through a shredder. Just a simple string trimmer line model like this.

Sometimes we set the shredder on a tarp and drag the mulch over to its intended area, sometimes we set the shredder on top of a huge Brute garbage can for collection, and other times we set the shredder directly in the ornamental bed.
I have to rake the shredded bits around so there is quite a bit of raking in my procedure. On the bright side it counts for that day's workout.

The mulch it makes is wonderful. If I blow the leaves out of my beds and mulch with commercial bagged mulch my order is upwards of 450 bags or several large truckloads- I have a lot of ornamental beds. But this leaf mulch works really well, is nice and soft to kneel in for weeding, and walks the fine line of lasting a full season and decomposing and aiding my soil.
It is by far my preferred mulch.

So I saw this post first on r/specializedtools this is what they found there.

It's a just a little tip that goes on the end of your powerwasher's hose. I'm sure there are others out there that are likely more efficient and probably more expensive than this one.

They that since it shoots the water jets backwards, the force from the expelled water actually pushes it through the clogs and blasts them out. Pretty neat and effective.

u/Halihax · 1 pointr/metaldetecting

Hahahaha. That's awesome of you.

Recommend buying new, yeah? [I can just get this one on amazon?] (https://www.amazon.com/Garrett-AT-Pro-Metal-Detector/dp/B006J61ZKS)

Also - is a pinpoint detector important?

u/C_Troch · 1 pointr/Bonsai

I have one of these. It works great because they're designed to sit on a 5 gallon bucket so all the fines fall directly into the bucket for easy clean up. Granted, not as awesome as "The Machine"

u/LoganSmith22 · 5 pointsr/coins

Depends on what your looking for, I got my hobby one for around 200.00 , I would say that's low to mid range, and it has lots of settings though, like a setting to turn off ptabs(pull tabs) cause every 3 seconds on a beach it would be going off like crazy, and them another option is precocious metals, and a lot of the. Have different depth settings, I think mine can go 10 feet or more yet again,it's in the option settings, here's mine: http://www.amazon.ca/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=garrett+ace+250&tag=googcana-20&index=aps&hvadid=55989878489&hvpos=1t2&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=14879978148347773255&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=b&hvdev=t&ref=pd_sl_7n1kczszo6_b

And then I have a small hand held one for sifting not the exact but similar: http://www.amazon.com/Garrett-SuperWand-Hand-Held-Detection-Pinpointing/dp/B000EEJ16G

Then we have smaller tools like a pan for the dirt so I can sift through sand and such, and like metal prods to jab at the sand to see if it's close to the surface, but my metal detector has a depth selector, so you can pick from surface to servers feet below the ground, hope this helps and if you have anymore questions, just ask :D

I agree with u/mansion. Last year I bought Garrett 1140900 Pro-Pointer AT Waterproof Pinpointing Metal Detector, Orange . Am very happy with it, totally worth it.

u/QWOP_Expert · 3 pointsr/MachinePorn

Oh, yeah I can see how the image is confusing, but the tall grass is behind the charging station for the mower and doesn't get cut. Although it is the same type of grass as where the mower has cut.

The range is limited, although I imagine as battery technology improves so will the range. This one can do 0.8 acres, which is decent. I've seen larger models as well which might be able to do more acreage. This one claims to do 4.9 acres, although I found a price of $12800 which is pretty steep.

u/shawt22 · 1 pointr/AutoDetailing

Hey guys, i'm new to detailing and I've been lurking around this subreddit for a while now, so I figured this was the right place to get some help.

I recently bought a Sun Joe Spx 1500 (https://www.amazon.com/Sun-Joe-SPX1500-Pressure-Electric/dp/B01IJ2SCF0/ref=sr_1_2?crid=3T9276WQD7OHU&keywords=sun+joe+spx1500&qid=1562874471&s=gateway&sprefix=sun+joe+spx+1500%2Caps%2C166&sr=8-2)

and a Dusichin Sfl-100 foam cannon (https://www.amazon.com/DUSICHIN-SFL-001-Pressure-Release-Adjustable/dp/B00WPKHFA6/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_86_t_0?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=E38KDVCN4MV5RTRMGQWR)

and the cannon does not go with the pressure washer, so I was looking for some help on how I would go about making these two work together instead of buying another foam cannon.

I was thinking about buying this gun (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06ZZ2LQ35/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A3N2AP77W7SQTI&psc=1), but i'm not sure if it would work with my pressure washer or if I would need and adapter or something.

Any help would be appreciated. (sorry for the formatting)

u/Lager_Fixed · 4 pointsr/AutoDetailing

You'll need a different spray gun since the Portland washer comes with an adjustable nozzle.

I tend to recommend Twinkle Star as a cheap option with decent quality:

Spray gun:

https://www.amazon.com/Twinkle-Star-Pressure-4-Color-Nozzles/dp/B01N6S5JR7

Foam cannon:

https://www.amazon.com/Twinkle-Star-Cannon-Connector-Pressure/dp/B07CGG67PY

Quick disconnect kit:

https://www.amazon.com/Twinkle-Star-Pressure-Adapter-Compatible/dp/B07L4HR1R7

Swivel joint (not necessary but recommended):

https://www.amazon.com/Twinkle-Star-Pressure-Connection-Fitting/dp/B07MYTG4T4

Longer / better hose (I would highly recommend this):

u/TxBlackLabelRx · 6 pointsr/AutoDetailing

Okay, this guy on Youtube puts Apple prices on the things he makes, more power to other people's wallet. You can make your own. Some items you will have to order, some items like the adapter can be found at your local hardware stores.

$15 wand Throw away type, it breaks toss it, still better than the stock wand.

$35 Wand These are serviceable, internal parts can be replaced. The stainless versions can get into $$$.

$65 Stainless Wand

$35 swivel I have two of these, one at the pressure washer outlet and the hose end, the one at the pressure washer started leaking, pricey doesn't mean better all the time.

$15 swivel I'll put these on the wand itself.

Better quick connecters Really a must buy for swaping out accessories even with cold or wet hands.

Adapters

Pipe thread tape This is thicker and better than the white tape.

u/chrisbrl88 · 2 pointsr/HomeImprovement

You're gonna splash the drywall a little (which should have cove base on it and be painted to protect against water to a degree). It'll dry. Not gonna hurt it.

Or use a floor scrubber attachment. They're $45 at Walmart. Damn things are AMAZING.

u/hoti0101 · 3 pointsr/videos

I think this is what he won. Retails for about $550. Pretty good score

u/Hatsuwr · 3 pointsr/lawncare

Doesn't really matter, this isn't a precision job. Just sit on the ground, hold it against your knees with one hand and file with the other if you have to. Have any clamps? Clamp it to a table. Better yet (if you can't install a bolt-in vice) get a vice that just clamps onto a surface. <$30 for a decent quality once.

Might buy a cheap balancer while you're at it: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000VYKS1Q/

I also recommend one of these for cleaning under the car/truck. I found this at WalMart for $1.50(!) on rollback a few weeks back. YMMV though.

That's what I used, it was a little rough trying to control my drill while I was running it over the blade. I've heard they're pretty awesome. Just another job you don't have to do. Heard they mimic a grazing animal... so it can't handle just going out and mowing a big yard full of tall grass, but instead is out often and constantly mowing.

But at $2700 that's a bit expensive for robo-mowing.

They make digging targets in any ground conditions much easier. Just be careful with the large shovel when you're digging around buried pipes or cables. Its so sharp it will cut through most things without you even knowing.

Are these reputable places to buy from/good deal? AT Pro + Pinpointer

Agreed. Get yourself a Garrett pinpointer: Garrett 1140900 Pro-Pointer AT Waterproof Pinpointing Metal Detector, Orange https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00TADH9HA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_Ty3IAbZSFN8CG

I actually found something like [this] (http://www.amazon.com/Tommyco-KP818-Purpose-Garden-Kneeler/dp/B001JEOH50/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1414378853&sr=8-2&keywords=gardening+knee+pad) at Walmart this summer and I've been using that. I have bad knees and it helps a lot. Blankets just don't cut it for me.

Someone on this subreddit recommended "gardener kneepads". I ended up getting a few of these. I keep them beside my yoga mat always.

It looks like those might be unavailable, but I wanted to link to exactly what I ordered.

Hmmm, can't find on Amazon. Any key words I should search for?

Edit, this looks like a cheap good option for power washer , Tool Daily Sewer Jetter Nozzle for Pressure Washer, Rotating, 1/4 Inch Female NPT, 4000 PSI https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07NQD51PN/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_MyIZCbDJZE2WD

that is the Detector itself...

This would be the pinpointer here :

https://www.amazon.com/Garrett-1140900-Pro-Pointer-Waterproof-Pinpointing/dp/B00TADH9HA

The detector itself has a pinpointing button , this will help you center the target in the middle of the coil , and you start digging .. then you use the little wand pinpointer i have linked to , to sift through the dirt to find the coin or whatever object is there...

It helps reduce time sifting through all the dirt... dig your little hole, take your pinpointer and move it around the hole and it will beep / vibrate when in contact with the object.

I don't know the price of sod there, but if I were looking for "instant lawn" on a spot like that, I'd torch anything green just enough until the leaves were shiny, and then turn the soil after three days. Permeable black landscape fabric under 3/4" of new soil will keep any of the old stuff from coming up through (if it survives having its leaves glazed), and will be enough soil to get the sod rooted until it is energetic enough to grown down through the pores. The fabric isn't great for drought areas, but with an aeration once the sod is established, the grass will have no trouble rooting through it. I'd probably install subsurface drip irrigation while I'm at it, and work out a way of directing laundry water to it.

Besides the specialized XP MI-6 discussed below, I have both the simple, black, non-waterproof Garrett Pro-Pointer

and the waterproof, orange "carrot" Pro-Pointer AT.

Personally, of all three, my favorite is the simple non-waterproof one. One push of the button and its on, one push of the button and its off. It is tough as nails (as are all three of mine... no problems there) and it is simple. I hate it when I hold the button down a bit too long on the AT and it goes into programming mode. By the time I get it back, I have no idea if I've changed the sensitivity accidentally or not.

My two cents.
