I chose to go with the i9 myself though there are those who min/max dollar to performance ratios and all that sort of thing and I have no problem with that. But for myself what I have learned is to always buy more than you currently need because you will grow into it. That has served me well so I stick to it. My thermals are really great and I rarely throttle so I am happy with the i9.

As for the areas to address thermal it will not void your warranty. These changes actually will extend the life of your rig so it is a good thing. Here are some things that will help you out as the process is fairly simple assuming you have a modest amount of computer knowledge and confidence:

Thermal:

https://www.ultrabookreview.com/14875-fix-throttling-xps-15/

Backplate Screws:

You will want to replace these immediately because eventually they will strip. Use the M2*3 from this kit because they are the traditional crosshead screw top and not the Torx. As a bonus these look nicer since they are black.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01FTI8TM8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

If one of your original torx screws strip take a small drill bit and go slightly into the head of the screw. This will create a small cone shaped hole in the top of the screw so now your screwdriver will have something to grip. Then use a torx screwdriver or similar to remove it by using generous amounts of pressure. (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MUJU33S/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

I highly recommend that you upgrade to the premium support plus option because it will cover you better should you ever require repairs. Do not buy from Dell unless you upgrade to this support option.

As for a review you can find any number of sites that will tell you how awesome this rig is. But if you want to read a legitimate review from a guy who gives you the good, the bad, and the ugly try this one. This review is 100% accurate and is supported by these threads and the issues people have come across. But I would say don't let this stop you from your purchase, just be prepared that it may take some time like it did for me to get a fully working unit. You may however be one of the fortunate ones to get a good unit out of the box.

The QBX manual leaves much to be desired.

The hardware (screws) provided seem like a grab bag and may not work too well.

A really great case for $50...but buy your own screws, thumb screws, etc. the bottom/floor screw holes for the 120mm fans just fall right out. These rubber fan mounts below work much better:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00H9905KA/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Again, the case is great. My problem with the ODD is that is seemed to fit snugly in the tray....but it could actually go further in, by about 1-inch. With the ODD in its tray further, the tray itself could be put back into the case and line up properly with existing screw holes.

Lots of cable management too. I would buy this case again, but wouldn't recommend for first time builders. Only fits 1 3.5" HDDdrive but 4 2.5" SSDs. It says the top of the case supports 2x120mm fans but given the power cable that connects to the power supply, YMMV. I put 1 120mm fan on the bottom and top. Rear and front both have 80mm fans.

I strongly recommend and SFX PSU like the SF600 and an ATX-to-SFX bracket. The extra space saved makes for a cleaner case.

Will post pics when my phanteks PWM hub comes in. I want to give fix up some cables.

Any questions, please ask.

I've been thoroughly impressed by the Corsair fans I purchased (2x 2pack of 120mm ML), and therefore I don't hesitate to recommend Corsair for CPU cooling as well. I'd suggest this one: https://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Hydro-Performance-Liquid-Cooler/dp/B00FZHWFEW/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1505845460&sr=1-3&keywords=corsair%2Bcpu%2Bcooler&th=1

Comes w/ dual fans out of the box so you don't have to use miss matched fans for the sandwich, but the sandwich does make a difference. You'll be cool as ice w/ this, but you'll also likely need to remove the bracket that holds the fan in currently depending on how it's set up now. Also, it can be a little difficult screwing through the mesh cage @ the top of the unit, and I've found that the rubber attachments: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00H9905KA/ref=psdc_3012917011_t1_B01M4LVBY2

...work very nice. I don't believe they come w/ the Corsair cooler, however there should be some in your stock PC case fan you could use as you won't be using the top fan anymore if you purchase this cooler.

Whatever you end up getting just keep in mind that fan size is 120mm.

Personally I have a liquid cooler on my GPU, and was able to somehow get it up to the top. Just saying I have some experience on the matter w/ the same unit.

It should come with everything you need. The screws are included with the case. You can buy kits on amazon though that have a bunch of extra.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01I4SOVDG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Bought one of those recently, worked pretty well, but you should get everything you need.

On your build it looks pretty good, might consider getting the i5-7500 instead, it is a tad bit faster and $15 more.

Also if you aren't purchasing this thing literally right away you might be best waiting for Ryzen in 2 weeks. They will be selling i7 class processors at i5 prices if all the leaks are true. Intel will likely need to adjust and even if you go with that build it will be cheaper in 2-3 weeks. Up to you. I wouldn't expect any major changes in speed from AMD, but most likely a big shake up in cost that will beneficial.

u/space0watch · 1 pointr/sffpc

This Noctua NH-L9i low profile is only 37mm high in total height including fan. It is compatible with AM4 socket so it would be enough to cool your Ryzen 2700. You could even overclock that CPU with this cooler because Noctua coolers are very powerful and I had the intel version on my i5 4690k (not overclocked) and it was fine. Question though if you are having a case that can accommodate a power supply why only have one where the GPU only draws power from the motherboard? You can get a Corsair SFX 600 watt PSU that is very small. Or you could go with the HDplex 400 watt PSU which is an AC-ATX power supply. It comes with all the necessary cables and relies on an external power brick like a Dell 330 watt laptop charger. However, Hdplex have released a 400 watt DC-DC power supply that you can connect to their low profile PSU. Or you could get a flex power supply which is internal but slightly more expensive then SFX.

This cheap kit of screws, standoffs, and washers has all the necessary screws and standoffs for most cases: https://www.amazon.com/ASIV-Standoffs-Assortment-Motherboard-Assembling/dp/B076Z7R2TC/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?keywords=motherboard+screw+kit+pc+case&qid=1550615403&s=gateway&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1 and is under $10. Yes metal parts can touch the power supply because all good quality power supplies are grounded within themselves to the electrical wire that goes to the wall so you won't get a shock or short your system. You don't need WiFi antennas if you plan to use Ethernet from your home router. If not you can easily find a generic USB-WiFi adapter that plugs into a USB slot and most are very low profile nowadays meaning it would be completely hidden. I take you plan to use a riser cable to make the GPU flat or are you using a low profile GPU so the case is shorter?

My only advice is to make lots of airholes for your case. To save drilling the wood you can use a jig saw or electric saw to cut out a round or square hole big enough to fit a 120mm computer case fan which are relatively cheap on Amazon or elsewhere. You can then drill holes for the fan screws or even mount the fan with double sided tape on the inside of the holes depending how big you cut the holes. Then you can add dust filters if you want to protect your fingers.

u/Anergos · 2 pointsr/buildapc

> Also as a side note, what are those rubber things on the corners of the fan?

They're used instead of screws, to reduce vibration from the fan. Like these.

If you're sure about your measurements, you can fit a 49mm thick 120mm radiator like this one.

Probably not with two fans (25mm+25mm+49mm=99mm) but with one fan you'll be ok. Performance won't suffer that much. You can get the corsair h80 one but it's way too expensive.

If you don't want to risk it, the Corsair H60 will almost certainly fit. It's the smallest one. But performance isn't that good. Had one, didn't like it.

u/thinkscotty · 2 pointsr/buildapc

Oh, and this is by no means necessary because most cases and parts come with plenty of extra scews and stuff, but you can get a set of standard PC screws of different sizes for like ten bucks. Something like this. If you only build the PC and don't upgrade often or like to obsessively mess around with stuff like me, probably unnecessary, but it's come in useful occasionally.

You'll probably also want a small tube of high quality thermal past like Arctic Silver MX-4 or IC diamond. It will usually lower your CPU temperature a few degrees over what most coolers come with.

u/PosturedPasta · 1 pointr/buildapc

Good choice on the Meshify C, nothing wrong with prioritizing airflow. It still has the sound dampening foam on the rear panel and the metal drive cages with rubber mounts, so that is a fine compromise imo. You can use rubber mounts like these instead of screws for your case fans to isolate their vibration. Best of luck with the build!

u/Excal2 · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

If your cooler is loud, here's what you do:

Look up your cooler (or fans if you put on aftermarket fans). They will list the decibel level at max load. So there's your benchmark. Now go buy something with a lower decibel level.

tbh you probably just need some quieter fans, you can replace them very easily on most coolers. Grab yourself a Noctua fan (or two if your cooler has two fans) of the appropriate size, they are very quiet and should help you out.

Rubber screws can also be effective all over your case, depending on whether or not you move your tower around a lot or whatever:

https://www.amazon.com/Cosmos-Pieces-Rubber-Mounting-Screws/dp/B00H9905KA

---

Usually paste will come with a new cooler but it won't be high quality, so if that matters to you get a better rated brand. High end thermal paste is less than $10 USD so I always keep a tube handy. If you only replace the fan and don't have any thermal paste you will need to purchase more.

Total $1318 for a 16CPU core/32 core hyperthreaded server with 64gig of ECC ram capable of supporting 24 drives in bays and a few more inside if I was crazy. It "should" be quiet, I'll know when the new PSU shows up and can update but I've been informed by others.. Right now it's about 58db all from the PSU <ahem>.

If you were to just buy the chassis I did, the SAS cards, the fans, the heatsinks, the cables, and the PSU, you would be able to do this for about half what I did. It would be fewer cores and perhaps slower by some margin but for an unRAID box it would be damn nice with lots of room for drives. If you shop around you might even be able to do it cheaper than I did! I almost bought ten core CPU btw, they would've been another $140 together lol

Hope that helps, fire away with questions if you've got them. This is basically a /u/JDM_WAAAT system and I got plenty of advice from the Discord channel on it and from his Youtube videos.

I tried to explain as best I could. I tried to add images along with the post but I couldn't. Maybe this will work:

Not what I'm looking for:
https://www.amazon.com/BCP-Replacement-Pentalobe-Screwdriver-Unibody/dp/B01191WKX8/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1483572789&sr=1-4&keywords=pentalobe+screwdriver+macbook

What I'm looking for:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentalobe_security_screw

The screwdriver on amazon is advertised as a pentalobe, but you can clearly see a difference between that driver and the actual pentalobe on the wikipedia page. I hope that clears up the confusion.

u/maniacalyeti · 1 pointr/mac

I've performed the operation on about 4 laptops in the last year. I guarantee it is super easy. There are some kits on Amazon prime that come with crazy glue packed in with a part that you crazy glue to the inside so it stays put. Works like a charm.

Apple ended up actually replacing my entire computer (2006 white MacBook) with a brand new one (2009 MacBook Pro) through AppleCare because they considered my white MacBook to be a "lemon" (after several warranty-covered repairs had to be made). But just last week I actually removed the fan on my 2009 MBP so I could clean it out and it was pretty simple. Just a few screws and one simple connecter. If you can make toast, you can probably replace this fan.

As for the stripped screw, there are some DIY options or something more substantial like a GraBit (basically, it's like a screw driver tip with a screw built onto the end but with left handed ['reverse'] threads. So as you try to back out your stripped screw, the tip of the GraBit will actually try to imbed itself into the back of your stripped screw). Obviously this might not work as advertised given the absolutely tiny nature of the screws used on that rear housing. Try removing all of the other screws first and see if you can get enough 'wiggle' out of the top cover to loosen that stripped one up a bit, then maybe try the rubberband approach (DIY). Just be careful not to bend the rear cover as there is a little bit of a lip on that inside edge of the Unibody, holding the rear cover in place. Good luck!

It was not hard to build the mobo into the case, just keep on top of your cable management. If you can, remove the HD sled first (unless of course you need it). All the screws come with the products that I purchased, yes. Be careful about stripping screws, just use the proper driver (no power!). I believe I have 8 standoffs mounted + 1 nub that comes pre-attached to the case. I probably watched ALL the youtube videos, lol. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=fractal+meshify+c+build

Things I made sure I had for my build before all my parts showed up.

  1. Anti Static wristband

  2. Computer screw set I did end up stripping a screw or two and had to replace them from here.

  3. Nice microfiber cloth for the tempered glass leave the plastic on the glass during the build, it will get loaded with finger prints.

  4. Screwdriver set you probably already have this, I just wanted magnetic ones.

  5. Fine screwdriver I used this A LOT.

  6. Magnetic screw tray

I got most of these items as a tip from a youtube video but I can not find it at the moment. Yeah, definitely let me know if you need help with anything or just want me to show you "how I did it". The manual for the mother board has the header LEDs defined on there, there is one dead spot (no pin) in the top right, obviously dont use that one but also don't use the one below it even though its labeled ground for the reset button (thats the only issue I had).
u/league_of_fail · 1 pointr/buildapcsales

They sell in packs with multiples of 4, but for the price, you might as well just buy enough for a few cases at once.

I use pliers to install them (make sure you install them on the correct side) for pulling the fan-end through the fan. One thing that helps a lot is using something like a wire cutter, or maybe nail clippers, to snip a bit of material off of that end. The case-side always just pops right into place no problem. I only ever have issues with the fan-side.

The ones I linked have a slightly different design than the rivets I own, so you may not need to remove material.

u/PH1BE5 · 3 pointsr/mac

That stinks, but luckily it’s an easy fix. Here’s an option.

Use these, the way they work is you pull them into the fan and then pull them through the case so that center rubber circle is in between the fan and case. Should help reduce fan vibration.

Funny, I actually self harmed by breaking https://www.amazon.com/Ziotek-Metal-Case-Slot-Covers/dp/B000BSJHRI into two. Not that sharp, but where there's a will there's a way :) I can actually very faintly still see a scar from that like 3 years later

u/fwaggle · 16 pointsr/buildapc

This is a motherboard standoff - it's a tiny nut with a screw in the end of it, it screws into your case, your motherboard sits on it, and then a screw goes through the motherboard to hold it down to the case.

Most cases come with them already installed, however you must check that they're in the correct location. I forget what the exact configurations are, but if you have them in one situation, and you put a larger board in, sometimes there's one installed where there is no screwhole in the board, and if it's near or on a pin from your motherboard, that pin gets grounded. If it's a thing that ought not to be grounded, there's a good chance that motherboard is ruined the second you put power to it.

Most good cases will be stamped with letters next to each hole, for example my kid's Corsair SPEC 04 case has "M" and/or "A" next to each hole to denote whether it's for mATX or ATX. If your board is mATX, you want a standoff in every hole that has an M next to it. Then inspect the board to make sure there are no standoffs where there isn't a screw hole, and you're all set, nothing to worry about.

TL;DR: Too many standoffs means there's a chance you could spark your motherboard. Too few, and it's not properly supported - you can break something pushing a connector down, or you can bend the board down so it sparks.

u/Dark_24 · 1 pointr/buildapc

What case do you have exactly? many times you can either buy the whole Accessories kit - OR if it is a new Case you can call them up and they will send a kit out to you for free..

or you can get yourself something like this: https://www.amazon.com/132pcs-Personal-Computer-Standoffs-Motherboard/dp/B072LNLFXV

it will have pretty much all the types of screws you might need in a nice little box.

u/molo1134 · 7 pointsr/diyaudio

I’m pretty sure you don’t need a stand-off and your mobo has it already.

u/IsABot · 1 pointr/buildapc

You need 1 SATA cable per drive. 3 drives = 3 cables.

If you are running an M2 drive, you don't need any cables for that, since it plugs directly into the motherboard.

You can just find an IO shield online, here is one on ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/I-O-Shield-only-ASUS-TUF-X299-Mark-1-LGA2066-DDR4-M-2-USB-3-1-DUAL-LAN-X299-ATX-/372621731038

The rubber gaskets that go over the whole fan help, but you still get some vibration since the screws are still touching the fan and case.

You sure those are intended to have screws in them? It looks more like they intend you to use the rubber vibration dampening rivet things. Something like these.

Hey friend, currently facing the same issue with my mobula7 lost one of my screws and my camera now sits at a consistent 0 degrees. I double checked your model on the website and it uses the same screws as my Mobula7. Here's the link i ordered off of amazon, of course you can always see if a local hobby shop/parts store will have a short (4-5mm long) M2 Screws and save on delivery/time.

Not expensive, and not poop colored. Read the first review, if you're not familiar with using them in general.

If the case is vibrating from all the fans, that should help quite a lot.

If the fan frame, or case, are a bit thin, and they fit loose, you can get a more secure grip by using fiber washers to add thickness for the rubber mounts.

http://www.amazon.com/Bplus-100pcs-Motherboard-Insulating-Washers/dp/B00JE61OZG

If the fans are buffeting more than vibrating the case, though, you need to either get things in the way (like cable bundles) out of the way, or get fans made for higher static pressure.

your motherboard will probably not come with any mounting hardware. The case might have built in standoffs. Just if the case bubbles up where the screw holes are. the actual standoffs probably aren't required.

But you can find pc screw kits pretty easily. https://www.amazon.com/228pcs-Personal-Computer-Standoffs-Assortment/dp/B01I4SOVDG/

u/TassiloBalbo · 1 pointr/techsupport

yea i guess. Standoffs are typically golden, they look like this. They screw into the case, then you put your motherboard on them and use screws that go through the motherboard and into the standoffs. They are important, but they probably were pre-installed becouse otherwise I don't think you'd be able to even screw in the motherboard. But still better check it.

u/Studweiser21 · 1 pointr/buildapc

I have the Focus G Mini - the front fans and fan bay on it are screwed in with threaded screws - I suspect this is what you have with the fan you'd like to move?

All the other fan bays are the more traditional type, where they're just holes basically, and you use a self-tapping screw that sticks in through the hole, and makes it's own thread in the plastic hole of the fan.

These, are an example of what you need:

They’re sold separately. Here’s an example. Make sure you get the longer versions since the Aer 2s have screw holes going through the body of the fans without gaps inbetween, so if you get short silicone screws they will be extremely hard to pull through since they’re soft silicone. I made the mistake of getting the short ones like this and I had to literally tie a string to it and pull it through the mounting holes, which took me about 45 min vs 45 seconds 😂

u/krakissi · 2 pointsr/buildapc

u/DGTownsman · 2 pointsr/NZXT

I'd get something like this that way you have all the different sizes found in a PC and you'll never have to worry about not having the right ones.

Just out of curiosity though, did you get rid of the extra screws that came with your case? They usually come with quite a few extras of the various sizes.

u/SuccessInCircuit · 1 pointr/buildapc

Can you take some pictures?

You should be able to at least boot with that PSU, as it appears to be a standard ATX power supply.

Some things to check:

  • There should be 2 connections between the PSU and the mobo. A wide 24 (20+4) pin and a smaller 8 (4+4) pin plug.

  • The CPU cooler/heatsink needs to be plugged into the mobo.

  • Make sure that the PSU's switch is on, if it has one.

  • Did you use mobo standoffs? This is very important. Some (usually cheaper) cases are designed to work without them, but they're fairly uncommon.

u/Mr_Assault_08 · 3 pointsr/buildapc

I recommend ordering some standoffs especially since your ATX board will need more.

Apparently, I assumed all cases came with standoffs, some cases only come with designed standoffs. As in the little nipple looking area is considered a stand off :/ Also your case should come with 3, I googled a preview/opening box video.

I say protect your investment and get some standoffs and if I'm right 6 at least. Copper if you can.

I was always told by my instructor to always use standoff to avoid shortening out your mobo.

But as luck would have it, when I opened the box, I only found steel screws. I'm trying to find some rubber pins, but I've never actually used them and don't know if I need something specific. Any advice?

There are these with a sort of long tail

And these, but I'm not sure if they'd work

u/kaje · 2 pointsr/buildapc

What are you mounting them to? There's screws like this that go through a panel and thread into the fans. I prefer using silicon mounts over those though. If they're being mounted on rads, 6-32 screws go through them and thread into the rad.

u/Ikkkou · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

They sell laptop screw kits for 10 bucks, if all you're missing is screws.

They'll come in various sizes, M2x2, M2.5x2, M3x2, etc.

The first number, is the the diameter of screw in metric (millimeters, M2 is the super tiny "lost forever in carpet" screw size, and M2.5 is the slightly bigger), and the second is length of screw.

Use the 2mm length screws to identify the screw size (diameter), then jump up in length on the hole until you actually hit the threads to secure it.

It'll likely be M2 and M2.5 holding it together.
