This is going up tomorrow in MFA, but maybe some of you guys will enjoy this too. Apologies for any weird typos, I'm practically delirious at this point. Goodnight y'all!

Thanks everyone for the feedback! I made the requisite changes.

**

Initial Impressions: Stan Smith with gum sole

I thought I would put up a quick review of one of the newer Stan Smith models. These are a white leather with gum sole. A little while back, some photos by a sneaker publication were posted (including this photo, more available here). When I saw the photos I immediately knew I
needed these sneakers like nothing else, and I don’t usually lust after sneakers in this way. I feel pretty comfortable saying these are the new MFA Killshot, improved in just about every way aesthetically. Also, to preempt any questions/outraged comments, I do not* typically keep shoe trees in these. However, it's easier to take photos of a shoe with shoe trees in it.

The gum sole is durable, but comfortable. It features white flecks throughout that match the upper. Despite any weird coloration of the photos, the upper is a pure white leather. It is lined around the heel cup with a leather lining and on the tongue and vamp with some form of synthetic liner. The interior has a padded, non-removable footbed.

Initially, I was a bit thrown off by the shape, but then I realized I’m way too accustomed to boots, given the recent weather. I threw them on my feet and liked the shape a lot more. Slim toebox, great profile with the sole, and an overall pleasing shape.

Fit is TTS. I’m an 11.5E on Brannock and wear an 11.5 in these. They’re a bit narrow, but are comfortable with wear. For someone with wide feet, it’s not going to get any better unless you get a pair of New Balance.

I ordered these from FootAction when they had a free shipping and a 15% off coupon. The total price ended up being $63.74. I didn’t really think twice about buying them, and they work perfectly with most of my wardrobe. I’m really looking forward to wearing them more as the warmer weather rolls in. I believe FootAction is sold out, but they’re still available from Amazon and Urban Outfitters.

Some shots on-foot: 1 (shamelessly stolen from /u/BAonReddit) 2

I don’t have any full fit pics, but they’re white sneakers. They go with literally anything casual. For some other white sneaker inspiration, check out this killshot album and this white sneaker album (neither album was composed by me).

I may have spent too much time and effort putting together this post, oops! My shoe game is pretty good in the winter because I love boots, and boots are what you wear in the winter. I'll still wear some of my boots in the summer since it doesn't get too hot in Seattle most of the time. I need my shoes to be comfortable enough to walk in, so no crazy heels or flimsy sandals with cardboard soles. My job has no dress code, so I have no desire to own loafers, flats, or dainty heels.

Cold/wet weather shoes:

Black leather lace-up boots: No link, but it's a pretty typical combat-style boot. This boot summarizes my shoe aesthetic. You may notice I have a thing for lace-up boots after looking at the next few listed shoes.

Waterproof black leather lace-up boots: I wear these almost all the time during the winter because they're my warmest, most waterproof boots. They have garbage traction for anything frozen, though.

Heeled black leather lace-up boots: The heel is chunky enough for me to maintain my balance, and the sole is grippier than my waterproof boots. I feel like a badass bitch in these shoes.

Red suede lace-up ankle boots: Can't find a link, but it's the boots in this outfit. I looove these shoes. I saw them on my college's buy/sell page last year for $25 so I snagged them.

Black suede ankle boots: Just another ankle boot. Kinda fancy looking. I'm salty that I bought them for $40 more than they're listed now.

Pointy black leather ankle boots: I originally wanted Acne Jensens, but I wasn't about to drop that much money on a pair of shoes, not even used. So I got these used off of Poshmark. I feel like a badass witch in these shoes. They feel uncomfortably tight in the morning every time I wear them, but they stretch out over the day.

When winter rolls back around, I want to get a pair of the classic 6-inch Timberland boots or something like that. I could really use the traction and warmth for the rare occasion I'm trying not to slip on snow.

Warm weather shoes:

Black Nike frees: I wear this more often than I'd like to admit. They're very comfortable and don't look like complete garbage with my casual outfits.

Gray Vans: Just another casual sneaker.

Mint green converse: I got these originally because they were cheap at TJ Maxx, and I needed a new pair of flat shoes for lifting. I ended up replacing these with another pair (Asics Matflex) with a thinner and grippier sole, so now I wear these casually.

Black reef sandals: My go-to sandal in the summer. Rubber sole, elastic straps. Easy to put on, comfortable, and doesn't look like garbage. Not enough arch support for a long day of walking, though.

Rainbow flip flops: I've still yet to break these in to a point that they're comfortable. I like the arch support, though.
I'm currently searching for another pair of sandals with good arch support. I'm thinking of going down the Birkenstock route, but I'm open to other options.
I also like the aesthetic of all-black high-top converse, but I can't bring myself to buy another pair since they fall apart so easily.

Workout shoes:

Adidas Adipowers: My most expensive shoes, and they only serve a single purpose. Sob.

Asics Matflex: Flat, grippy, but a pain to put on. I wear them in the gym for anything but squatting.

Blue Nike pegasus: Good for running, makes me feel like I'm on a cloud.

> If not these, then what? You provided EXCELLENT explanations of everything that you don't like, but you've failed to suggest any non-sneaker alternatives.

I suggested sneaker alternatives because they fall in the same price range and are the same level of formality that the Skechers are meant to be. If you're looking for sharper leather shoes Clarks Desert Boots, Bucks, or a thrifted pair of Allen Edmonds McAllisters all fit the bill.

> While "you get what you pay for," you must understand that a single pair of shoes that runs $100 or more is just not something that everyone can afford.

None of these are currently $100 or more. If you can swing $60 for Skechers, you have $60-$70 for a different shoe. I'm a college student who pays my own tuition, and volunteers at the lab in my free time. The occasional odd job between those provide my entire entertainment/clothing budget. My 3 pairs of shoes are $3 thrifted black cap-toe oxfords, $19 nordstrom brand bucks, and $160 work boots I saved six months for. If $60 is too much for you your options are to wait for sales (end of a season is best for clothing), hits the thrift store, or stop worrying about fashion because you have bigger things to deal with.

> The shoes you suggested as alternatives are either skateboard shoes or a little childish.

Vans is a skate shoe company, but the authentic and authentic lo pro are clean, canvas, and unobtrusive. They have none of the faults that the problems of the Skechers. Keds are known for women's shoes, but the Champions are also sleek and unobtrusive. Same with the frequently-teenage-associated Jack Purcells, especially if you get the low top without the rubber toe cap. Again, sneakers were suggested because that was the design of the shoes in the original post. They're not the only shoes out there if you don't like them.

> Explain cheap leather to the unwashed.

In ascending order of quality

  • Bonded Leather: Most super cheap leather is bonded leather. Bonded leather is leather fibers caked in glue then pressed into shape. That's what the Skechers were, and that's what you should really try to avoid for all the reasons listed in my last post.

  • Suede: Suede is the bottom fibrous layer of the hide. While it looks nice and holds up better than bonded leather, it's thin and gets damaged by rain and salt. Sometimes one side is painted over to give it the appearance of top grain leather. The product is often called "genuine leather".

  • Top Grain Leather: Top grain is the uppermost portion of the hide. It looks like high quality leather, as evidenced by the epidermis. It is, however, still thin and will not age well.

  • Full Grain Leather: This is the full hide. It contains both the top and bottom layers unsplit. It's thick, develops a patina (wear pattern particular to leather), and if treated it will last decades.

Boots and shoes with full grain leather generally start at about $150 and go up from there. Considering the cost of replacing lower quality leathers though you can often save money on the long term by buying better leather shoes first. If a $60 bonded leather shoe lasts you a year, a $300 full grain shoe need only last 5 years to cost the same and will often last far longer than that. If you need shoes right now for a job interview or to wear to work, go ahead and get some cheap oxfords or derbies. Otherwise I urge anyone to save their money for a while and get better leather.

    > I'd apologize for the snarkiness, but I mean it in earnest, so I won't. If you're going to attack something, fine. But try to take it a step further and recommend meaningful alternatives

I understand that you feel like I attacked shoes you like and possibly own, so you feel I've attacked you or your decisions. I'd like to urge that that is not the case. The previous post was not aimed at you. It was a reply to a college kid asking what was wrong with that pair of Skechers. That's exactly what I addressed in only the detail relevant to the context. If the advice wasn't perfectly suited to fit your lifestyle as well, I'm sorry but that's what happens when you weren't the one who asked in the first place.

Also, read the guides. A lot of us put a lot of work into centralizing and writing that information for everyone.

I am the most indecisive person when it comes to shoes. I find it a really awkward thing to buy, specially in-store when you have to do that little test walk that makes people always walk funnily rather than normal.

I think its really hard to have a look for someone else so I focused on what I am looking for.

I started with comfort so you have a few different style of Skechers.
1)I dont know your family situation but these strike me as dad sneakers lol
2)These are a little bit more serious. I am from the UK so terminology is somewhat different. Not sure if you would consider them sneakers
3)These are sportier and ideal if you like to run but dont want to spend way too much on running shoes
4)Nike also has these running shoes I have always liked Nike shoes and they have a variety of colours, even if size 15.
5)I think these Adidas look amazing. I love that combination of colours.
6)Last but not least, another pair of Nike ones that I liked

Let me know what you think. I think I found it easier than choosing for myself which is very odd. I guess the hard part for me is making the final decision!

Should I win, I am happy for you to surprise me.

Thank you and have a nice day

I hike the mountains in MT multiple times a month. Mostly day hikes but I also do 1-5 day trips whenever possible. I prefer the cold so my gear is oriented to that. I won’t give full descriptions but I’ll link you what I use very comfortably. You can check the items out up/downgrade as needed. At least you’ll have an idea of what can work.

Also, the bulk of my gear money is spent on comfort clothing, not the main items I list below. All wool. Head to toe. Can score nice wool at the good will/thrift store sometimes. Good luck!

Tent – 110.00 got mine on sale for 75.00 so look for deals

sleeping bag – ICW 84.95. I’m certain I paid less so shop around

backpack – Tenzig 2220. 149.95. Most comfortable pack I’ve owned. Currently year 2 of using it. I think I paid 200 so this might be a good deal

Boots – for day hike I use Field Blazer – 100ish bucks for above 0, and Woody Elite – 200ish bucks for below 0.

For multi day trips with no snow I use Ventilator – About 100ish bucks. They have low and mid. I own both but prefer the low.

My kit is always evolving but these are some things I always carry no matter what -

--My knife + ferrocerium rod. (I put hundreds of dollars into my knives - but you can carry a mora for 10.00)

--A lifestraw. (10 bucks?)

--My own medkit (pieced together based on needs over the years) (10-25ish bucks?)

--Extra socks. (Good wool socks - 6-15 bucks)

--Day hike - plastic military canteen. (buck or two at thrift) Multi day - Stainless steel cup/bottle system (40-80+ bucks, or can go aluminum for short term and half the price)

--Paracord + tarp. (15 bucks or less for both and in good weather + fire the tent isn't even necessary with these. If the bears are out I always use a tent though)

--Pocket fishing kit I made with extra fishing line. (5 bucks)

What's in my pocket - Bic lighter, phone, compass, chapstick, whistle, hand warmer packx3, instant coffee.

This is for me, solo hiking in the mountains. I often carry much more depending on what i'm out to do, but these are items that in my experience will never leave my pack. I also always carry my Alaskan.

Dude thanks so much, super kind of you. To be honest, though, and I hate to sound too picky, but I don't know if I like the look of it too much. I care about looks and functionality, but a slight priority towards looks. I do, however, love the High Fidelities after seeing them again. Do you think they compare quality-wise to the ones you linked? Not sure how to tell if its stitched and the right kind of leather.

and if theres not much of a difference in quality (although I'm sure there is as this is just polyurathane, not sure how quality the eastlands are though) then I might look into these

Edit: Oh and in case both of those are not worth it, I have a little bit on a gift card, so i was wondering what you thought of these chukka-like boots:

Do they compare to actual boots? These are basically the 4 I've narrowed it down to, let me know what you think, thanks!

They're pretty common recommendations here on MFA, but I love my Chippewa GQ boots. They're rugged, feel solid, super comfortable, improve with age and wear, and walk a nice line between stylish and practical. They're also reasonably cheap.

I waterproofed them with some Obenauf LP, which made them a little darker than they are in this photo. They also come in a steel-toed version.

u/metanoia29 · 2 pointsr/onebag

As long as you don't mind a no-name brand, I have these and they were amazing last summer: https://www.amazon.com/Tesla-TF-BK31-BG_Men-Running-Minimalist-Barefoot/dp/B074NXP35L. Just pulled them out again this week and they're holding up great for using them almost exclusively when I'm not at work or at home.

They're basically identical to the Merrell Vapor Glove, but cost about 1/3 of the price. They pack super flat but still give you enough coverage up your foot like a regular shoe. With socks they look like any other sneaker, but I prefer to wear them sockless. Much more comfy then some cushiony ridged sneaker, and super easy to pack.

The Johnston & Murphy Melton Oxford is the shoe to buy. It is the best quality you can get in Canada at around the $200-$230 CDN pricepoint, before jumping up to ordering factory seconds of the Allen Edmonds Fifth Avenue, Carlyle or Park Avenue, which WILL end up costing you between $315-$350 CDN, after exchange rate, border processing through DHL, and shipping are factored in. Even if the shoes are on sale in the AE shoe bank for $170.

I know this because 8 months ago I ordered a pair of AE Fifth Avenues for Brooks Brothers during the last big sale, and the shoe that was $169 initially ended up costing me $315 in the end, given that shipping from Ohio was $40 USD, processing was $10, and exchange was terrible. On top of that, the shoes don't even fit, because the 5 last, which is used on the Fifth Avenue, Carlyle, Park Avenue and others, is too narrow.

Back to the J&M though: this shoe is, like I said, the best quality you can get around the $200 CDN range. Right now it is on sale in 8.5D at amazon.ca for $228.

It is the same price on the J&M website too.

I have seen it at the Bay as well, though it is not listed online currently. And I have also seen it on deep discount on amazon.com, despite it being in USD. I snatched mine up when it dropped from $175 USD to $110 USD, which made the exchange and duties worth paying for.

Anyways, here is why you should buy this shoe, given your budget:

AE factory seconds will cost you $310+ to order from the U.S. First quality AE "Bloor Streets" (Park Avenues) will run you $500 CDN+ tax at Harry Rosen in Toronto. But the J&M Melton is not only much more affordable, it is miles ahead of all the other mall grade crap you would still spend up to $160 CDN on at Aldo or the Bay.

The main shoes I see at the Bay and in malls are usually Bostonian, Florsheim, Aldo, Steve Madden, Kenneth Cole, Pegabo, and Stacey Adams. In almost all cases, these are all overpriced crap that you will still end up spending up to $150 on anyways.

Bostonian and Florsheim used to be good, but now, alongside the rest of the shoes in the list (except for a couple Stacey Adams products), they are shittily made in China, with corrected grain leather, and glued soles, which significantly reduce their durability and longevity, while also reducing their comfort. Not only are the designs ugly, but they are terribly built, with terrible quality control, and terrible materials. And they will still run you over $100-$150 CDN.

Meanwhile, the Johnston & Murphys range from $160 CDN on sale to $230, yet are miles ahead of all those previously mentioned brands. Of course, they are not at AE level, but the Meltons in particular are goodyear welted and made with full-grain Italian calfskin. My pair is beautiful, and is very close in appearance to the $500 Park Avenue. They are leather soled as well, and while they aren't made in the USA like AE, they aren't made in China either (made in India).

If you're willing to pay $200, I'd definitely make the jump up to $230 and get the J&M Meltons. It's a significantly better shoe than any other option in that range, and well well worth the bump up from Bostonian or Kenneth Cole or Aldo. Yet it's a lot cheaper than what it will cost just for you to get second-quality Allen Edmonds. On top of that, unlike the AE shoes on the 5 last, the Melton fits true to size. So you don't have to worry about sizing up or down. If you are sized as 8.5D, then order an 8.5D.

And if you're patient, you might even snag em on sale. Though they aren't at the moment: https://www.johnstonmurphy.com/mens-sale-shoes#srule=PriceLowHigh&sz=1000&start=0

The Salomon Quest 4D II GTX is an amazing boot. I've done Acadia, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Glacier, and countless state parks in these boots and they have held up impeccably after hundreds of miles of hiking. They're waterproof and nearly indestructible. They are about $230 at REI but can be found cheaper in certain sizes on Amazon and they come extremely well rated on Outdoor Gear Lab, winning the Editors' Choice. I love them and as soon as mine wear out (who knows when that will be) I will buy another pair without a second thought.

I walk 30+ miles a week, so maybe my experience will help a little.

Any walking shoe will eventually need to be replaced. 350-500 miles is typical for an athletic shoe, but if you only walk in them you should shoot for 500 miles. Now, the question is: what shoe will get you there? I've tried tons of different shoes and here's my honest opinion:

  1. Any generic brand you can get at Walmart for $15 avoid like the plague. I've literally worn through the soles of some of these in a week.

  2. Asics- great comfort but lousy soles. The soles are cheaply glued together and whole sections peel off after 30-40 miles. Asics is good about swapping them out if it happens, but they'll only do it once.

  3. Nike- the toe cap always detaches. I've tried to use Shoe Goo but it never lasts. Had this happen on at least half a dozen pairs.

  4. Sketchers walking shoes. Cheap cheap cheap. The soles wear out, the memory foam padding inside feels like cement after a week and they make my feet hurt.

  5. Doc Martins (any). Feel like cement blocks tied to your feet and will give you blisters after a mile. They're not really walking shoes but I thought I'd give them a try.

So what do I use? I'm really digging these Merrill Moab hiking shoes. After 100 miles they look almost new. Good stability, the padding around the ankle and in the footbed is still great and the soles show zero wear. They're Vibram soles, not sure what that means, I just know they're tough. Also, it's been about 90F outside this week and my feet were the only part that wasn't roasting.

So, while not quite BIFL, I think these would get you to the 500 mile mark.

Specifically, something not made with a leather sole and probably not made from calfskin/kidskin (goat equivalent to calfskin).

For light snow you'll probably want a lug sole. Something like this, for example, isn't that much chunkier. You can buy dressier boots with synthetic lug soles like the Allen Edmonds Long Branch (which is available in grey, or used to be), or something like the Red Wings Beckman which has a leather sole with lugged plate, but I think something more like the Chippewa is a safer bet if you're looking for something to specifically wear in light snow.

edit: However, what I linked you wasn't black I just realized.

If black is a necessity, the RW Iron Ranger and Red Wing Beckman both come in black, however the vibram sole on the red wing isn't ideal for snow/ice, and the calfskin on the beckman can discolor and be stained by snow/salt fairly easily, as well as the rest of the sole is still leather. If it's really worth the money, you could buy the Iron Rangers and take it to a cobbler and get a lugged sole but you'd be beyond your budget at that point.

Thanks, I looked at the boot guide, I know I need something different. Yes I am more of a rugged dressing person. I do wear clothes that fit, I wear straight leg jeans and athletic or trim fit shirts. I cannot spend 300 on boots right now, I am hoping to spend less than $100.

I thought about getting those, but instead got these Chippewa boots

Even cheaper than Katahdins, look about the same as the original Op's post too. I just got mine and they're super comfy. And it's true what the reviews say about sizing down.

u/RailsIsAGhetto · 3 pointsr/powerlifting

No experience but honestly they just look like wrestling shoes. ASICS makes the Matflex for less than half of what you'll pay for other stuff. Matflex are probably the best bang for the buck deadlifting shoes.

u/dtown4eva · 2 pointsr/goodyearwelt

I don't know what price range you mean by not too expensive but here are some options.

Red Wing Moc Toe lug is a different moc toe without a wedge sole but still might be too bulky.

Thorogood has this cheaper moc toe that you might like.

Red Wing Beckman moc toe is a nice but slightly pricier option.

Irish Setter is Red Wings cheaper hunt and work label but they are all made in China. They have some other options

Or you could look into some Made in Maine handsewns for a different moc toe look. Here is a Quoddy chukka for cheap if you happen to be a 11.5

Hope this helps some.

That's the women's boot though, but it says the same thing on the men's one.

I got mine from Amazon, from the Originals series too. Most comment on there, MFA, and everywhere else say that you should order at least a size down (in American sizes). I'm a 13 and I ordered a 12. I had to put a heel cup in mine so they'd be perfect, so I think I might even fit in 11s.

So, yeah, it's weird, I don't know what's up with their website, or if the model's just changed.

I've heard really good things about these boots, and there are some good write ups on them by other redditors (mobile so it's hard to link right now).

Personally, I own a pair of RW Iron Rangers, and I think they are definitely worth it... But they definitely will set you back a bit more at the start.

Depending on your boot size, the Salomon Quest 4D 2 GTX is a great value, at least in my opinion:

Men's Quest 4D 2 GTX

It's definitely my favorite boot I've ever owned.

u/kombucha44 · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Im honestly not sure, picked them up at a thrift store years ago. I think they might be Kenneth Cole? They're good beaters but I honestly wouldn't suggest them if you're looking for a new boot. I'd suggest something like, Wolverines, Red Wings,Doc Martens, or Chippewas depending on your budget and style you're looking for.

u/3PinkPotatoes · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

How about these? Under $100, come in your size and has 2 color options:

I have the chippewa apache steel toes that I wear for work. They're comfortable and for the price pretty much the best looking steel toed boots around. You can see them here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00413PWPK/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1416799287&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SY200_QL40

I received a $250 gift card to amazon for a pair of boots this christmas, so ignore prices mostly when I ask the following question:
I want a boot that looks good and is versatile, will age nicely, and is very durable. Which should I get, and for what reason.

Chippewa Service Boot in cordovan

Red Wing Beckman in black cherry or cigar

Red Wing Iron Ranger in amber harness

or, Wolverine 1000 Mile in cordovan

while i agree with your overall statement, you probalby would have been better off using anything other than knives as an example.

a fibrox knife like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Victorinox-Swiss-8-Inch-Fibrox-Straight/dp/B008M5U1C2

holds an edge better than the much more expensive chef's knives out there. if you aren't running a kitchen and doing very specific work and maintaining them daily, those knives don't make sense.

now, take shoes: I used to buy a $60 pair of rubber soled shoes every year and they would always fall apart. now I buy full grain leather, leather soled shoes that can be recrafted if they ever wear out. $300 for a pair of shoes like these sounds crazy until you realize that they actually save you money over the long term

Why a high-end knife is probably not for you

u/splatterhead · 2 pointsr/BuyItForLife

Merrell Moabs.

I love these.

Light. Good ankle support.

u/slapdashbr · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Keep an eye out for sales. I saw some of these on sale a few weeks ago for $100, kind of regret not buying them because they're fairly well built and definitely worth $100: http://www.amazon.com/Florsheim-Veblen-Mens-Oxford/dp/B003ELP88G

But I'd say look for something like those (maybe not long wing) in brown for your "nice casual" shoe. Nice enough to wear with a Navy suit or slacks/blazer combo, but not so fancy that they look out of place with jeans. For sneakers I personally like adidas sambas, but you might not like those at all. I have huge feet so I'm limited to brands that make size 14.

u/Chaoss780 · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

The one you described is either the Sahara or Amaretto I think.

I personally own a pair of Saharas, and they are definitely the most versatile colorway Sperry releases. They go with literally any color short, and look great both new and broken in and dirty.

Earlier today I also figured I would get another pair since I bought my current ones a year ago and would like to mix it up perhaps a bit more this summer. I ended up going down to either Burnished Brown Tan, Tan, or Navy. The one thing I liked about these was the white sole - I thought it gave a really cool accent.

My problem with the navy is that it seems they use a different leather. If you look at the picture closely it looks must more textured than the others.

The tan to me looked too much like the Sahara just with a white sole.

So I settled on the Dark burnished brown one. The price just dropped recently which helped me settle on it as well.

All in all, the sperrys I see the most are Saharas. The second most I see are burnished brown and tan. I do see a lot of Oatmeals too, so any of these I would consider "in" right now.

I would like to but these Chippewa Apache Lace-Up Boots (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004TK2UCI?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_1&smid=A2WOPAGVJGO3RL) but I'm a student and the $150 price tag is a little high for me. Does anyone know of somewhere selling them for a better price or an Amazon promo code code that I could use? Are these boots worth the cost?

Get a pair of [Salomon Quests] (https://www.amazon.com/Salomon-Quest-4D-Asphalt-Titanium/dp/B00KWK2JSE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1465676047&sr=8-1&keywords=salomon+quest). They are GoreTex so they are waterproof but the water can get out. They are really comfortable. They work well in the snow and the heat. I got mine for a trip to New Zealand, ended up wearing them in Indonesia and Australia. I also used them for snowshoeing all winter. They were a little warm in the hot climates but never too cold. I'd suggest trying some on.

u/RunForrestRun · 1 pointr/discgolf

This pair of Merrell shoes are what I purchased at the beginning of the summer and they have been great. I don't think they are "waterproof", but I've stepped in quite a few puddles and I have yet to feel water get through. The soles and toes are also extremely durable. The right toe on my old shoes wore out pretty quick once I started playing regularly - the right toe on my Merrells is barely fazed.

Clark's Bushacre DB Dark Brown Color

I have a pair of Chippewa Chocolate Apache Lace up boots, and I'm afraid the color may be too similar. Many of my friends are saying to get the beeswax leather color, but I'm not in love with it. I like the richer color of the dark brown. Any alternative suggestions?

u/imagoodusername · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

If you like Florsheim and like longwings, try the Florsheim Veblen -- or better yet, try thrifting an old pair of shell cordovan Florsheim Imperials. The cordovan Imperials are supposed to be nearly indestructible.

u/ellomatey · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Also thorogoods.

They are already good value for money but worth waiting for a sale. I think my chippewas were about $100 on sale a few years ago, but I'm not sure they drop that low any more.

Chippewa in brown (don't be fooled by the amazon pics, look a lot nicer in person) and burgundy.

Either of those boots will last nearly as long as red wings but the styling and leather isn't quite as nice. Could get 2 or 3 years before needing a resole.

It depends on what I'm layering it with. Sometimes if I'm going for a semi-streetwear vibe I wear my [white gum-sole stan smiths] (https://www.amazon.com/Adidas-Stan-Smith-Sneakers-Style/dp/B00TQZBJ3C/) or alternatively for a more americana vibe my [Clarks desert boots in beeswax] (https://www.clarksusa.com/us/originals/originals-mens-desert-boots/desert-boot-beeswax/p/26106562). I have a pair of Chippewa x J. Crew collabs, but I don't wear them with these because the leather is too red.

Honestly, I'm not thrilled with my footwear situation right now. If I was picking up new shoes, I'd go with [these] (https://www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-x-allen-edmonds-unlined-chukka-boot) Allen Edmonds in chocolate for chukkas, some nice [boots] (http://i.imgur.com/zGUPdVG.jpg) (credit to /u/cathpah), or a higher quality white leather sneaker (CP or derivative). Coincidentally, these are my next three purchases.

When I worked a job where I needed steel toes, I had a pair of Chippewa Apache's. They held up very well after two years of daily wear, and they seem to get some love from the MFA community to boot.

u/captainkirkthejerk · 1 pointr/Slackline

I hate wearing shoes but if I have to I'll go with these. They still allow your foot to wrap around the line since the sole is so pliable. I've done a good bit of hiking in them as well and they're only $30.

u/Orgcore · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Great post, but quick question. For the Chippewa's, how does the pair in the original post compare with these slightly more expensive ones?. Is it just color?

EDIT: Lug sole apparently, never mind! I'll probably go with those because of the snow and slush.

u/nettlebladder · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

I like the blazer but am not really sure about the shoes, they are as you said a bit busy and that type of shoes with elastic fastenings tends to look a little lazy. They are also synthetic leather, and will get hot and sweaty really fast. Real leather breathes more and will look better in the long run. Maybe a pair of bucks of a pair of CDBs (clark desert boots)? They are more expensive but will last a lot longer than plastic leather boots and are quite frequently recommended here on MFA.

My current footwear consists of Thorogood plain toe boots in tobacco and Chippewas.

For pants I am usually rocking my 3sixteen shadow selvedge and some bonobos travel Jeans in Santa fe sand, as wells a cords (burgundy, green, dark khaki), and sometimes (but not super often) chinos (olive, brown).

My tops are usually sweaters (pretty wide variety) or flannels.

Jackets I own are a indigo denim jacket, an olive vest, and a grey wool shawl-color jacket.

I just bought two Walnut Strands so I can get the right sizing. Seems like a good price considering how hard it is to find Strands this side of the border.

u/Robbielovesdoritos · 2 pointsr/BarefootRunning

Check these out. Tesla Runners I’ve run far over 100 miles in them, and they are still holding up just fine. Only downside is they can get wet because they are mesh. 100% would recommend, I’m going to be buying another pair for sure - and they’re only $30!

u/trebemot · 1 pointr/goodyearwelt

Ok so I’m looking for moc toe boot that can service me in the winter time(Minnesotan winter to be exact). So from what I understand I’m looking for a rubber sole with lugs. I’ve been looking at mostly redwings because that’s what I know is recommended most the time.

So something like this WOUND’T work? RW Heritage Classic Moc

But his would, right? RW Moc toe Lug

or this? I’m not sure about the sole Thorogood Moc Toe tobacco

This says it’s a Vibram® Christy Blown Rubber Wedge outsole, would that work? Thorogood Moc toe brown crazyhorse

Those last two would appear to be the same damn thing, but say they have different soles.

I really like the white wedge sole, but it’s hard to commit to something that will be a liability come winter time. The price on lugged sole I’m not a fan of, but it is what it is.

The way a lot of these are described seems inconsistent to me and I can’t make heads or tails of what won’t cause me to eat shit this winter…

Also, any other boots I should be looking at?

Thanks.

EDIT: What about these?

I'd suggest looking at hiking boots. They're made for exactly the uses you've described, unlike the recommendations for workboots that have been offered so far. The Chippewas recommended don't have good arch support, and I just don't see them working well for what you've described. I'd check these out:

Patagonia makes some good ones too. I know these aren't that attractive, and aren't as fashionable as Chippewa, but they'll actually work.
