🎓 Reddit experts on spare tire carriers
The comments and opinions expressed on this page are written exclusively by redditors. For your reference and for the sake of transparency, here are the specialists whose opinions mattered the most in our ranking.
So the hitch that I found sits comfortably behind the number and actually affects the exit angle very little if at all. I'll also be getting a 1 1/4 to 2 inch adapter that is technically only meant for class II hitches, but for only holding a spare tire, it will be fine. It's also fine for holding a bike rack or something. I'll edit this comment when I'm at my computer and show you what I'm getting
EDIT:
If all this metal that's bolted to your car is rattling around way too much because of the couple millimeters of play in the hitches, pick yourself up a couple of these and it's problem solved.
Hope this helps! If you want to know anything else, let me know

Have you looked into something like this? Or possibly something like This? These guys made the ideal carrier for cheap and fairly simple, but if you want to just outright buy one, there are ones like these:
http://www.cbioffroadfab.com/products/trail-accessories/fold-down-tire-carrier-premium-model/ (A lil pricey)
https://www.amazon.com/CURT-31006-Spare-Tire-Mount/dp/B0009YIE1O
All of them except the last one fold down so you can open your tailgate, which is nice. It doesn't look bad, keeps the roof free, the cargo open, and easy to move/access.
It’s difficult to find anything <$200. There’s the cheap Curt hitch on Amazon. Floats around $85 give or take.
I think it might look kind of derpy on a full size SUV but it would do the job.
Honestly, your best bet is probably to find a local machine shop and see if they would weld something up for you. I bet for $150 you could pay somebody with some time and talent to make something a bit nicer than the Curt hitch. Maybe it could at least swing downward for tailgate clearance.
Also, depending on where you are, keep an eye in FB marketplace and Craigslist. I see tire mounts pop up every once in a while.
Nice tire mounts are expensive for a reason. It takes a lot to keep a heavy, oversized tire from rattling around and making vibrations with thousands of miles of off road use and debris.
Not sure how fancy you wanna get with it, but I'm planning on using this hinge for the carrier, and this pin to keep it open on hills. I have yet to design my rear bumper, but I did the front one and it turned out pretty good. My advice would be to look at premade ones to find stuff you like and go from there. BleepinJeep has some newer videos where one of the guys builds a bumper for his diesel jeep, and a video assembling a diy rear bumper for a Comanche.
The more related research you can do the better. The best thing you can do for your wallet is mock things up in cardboard before going to steel. It allows you to see how things will look, gives you an idea of dimensions, and is a hell of a lot cheaper if you screw up. Also be sure to account for clearances of stuff like paint/bed liner, otherwils you'll have a he'll of a time trying to get it on and off.
Ya and the actual tire holder is plastic which could be broken pretty easily and they could deal with the locking cable later. I'm now thinking maybe something like this? It will keep them from being able to get at the nut at all but less obtrusive than the bolt you linked. Main positive I see with the bolt is that it can be matched to your vehicle key. The bolt sticks out so much that I think it would be in the way when I use my trasharoo.
Mine is in my hitch. I fabricated my own because I didn't like how bulky the other ones were.
I bought this fold-down adapter for my hitch and this Curt tire mount. Cut off the receiving end of the tire mount and then weld it into the adapter. It's pretty heavy but it's much more compact. You can’t mount the tire directly to that Curt mount so I used a couple of 2” wheel spacers and old lug nuts as my mounting hardware. My stock suspension started to sag immediately after putting it on so I have to add these Rallitek 1.4" lift overload rear springs to compensate for the extra weight. Once fully loaded, it handles better than it did with the stock suspension. I also need to figure out what to do about my license plate. Right now the spare blocks the original plate mount so I’ve got it zip-tied to the spare until I can figure out a better solution.
If I remember correctly, that tire carrier is actually a JK tire carrier. The guy I bought the Jeep from had modified it to fit the TJ
Edit: Here's one type of it http://www.amazon.com/Performance-Accessories-85207-Wrinkle-Carrier/dp/B0038UUEN2/ref=sr_1_38?ie=UTF8&qid=1462486216&sr=8-38&keywords=jeep+tire+carrier I don't know it it's the same one, but a couple other companies make it as well, so you might be able to find something even cheaper.
A jack mount. Bolt it wherever is best for you. https://www.amazon.com/AUXMART-Mount-2007-2017-Wrangle-Off-Road/dp/B01LZLUKM2
I would say its fine. If your new wheels have different backspacing than stock, make sure you get longer isolators to keep it steady.
Something like this
Have a friend with a rack that fits right through the spare... will look it up in a moment.
I'm pretty sure hers was a Yakima, but there's some alternatives.

I shelled out for the yakima spare tire holder. 100% recommend it, like everything else yakima makes, its over engineered and extremely high quality. But you gotta pay for it.

Huh. They weren't kidding. They're all over the place:
https://www.amazon.com/EAG-Bumper-Carrier-Receiver-Cherokee/dp/B07NPBYC65
First I've ever heard of them.
They need to start storing a set of Gojaks at locations like this. Just wheel the offending car out of the spot.

Unfortunately, they aren't as cheap as you'd think for just some metal tubing. That said, it was necessary and it was the only one I could find. I got mine here:
