My list would include a variation of games

Code Names - $16

Sushi Go - $10

7 Wonders - $26

Tsuro - $19

Castles of Burgundy - $27

Total: $98

Explanations:

First, I want to preface these selections: our play group varies in size from week to week with anywhere from 4-10 players averaging 5-6. So, we often get caught "splitting the party." That's fine at times, but sometimes, we all want to jump in on one game together because splitting up feels bad man^TM since we're all there to socialize in addition to playing games.

As such, I wanted to include games that ran the gamut and for the most part games that scaled well from 2-X players.

First, Code Names. Now, we've played this game so many times, we actually purchased the expansion Code Names Deep Cover which is a fun variant which adds tons of more playability. This is the go-to "party" game as, for our group, Cards Against Humanity has grown a bit stale. At least it hits the table much less frequently than in years past. Code Names is easy to teach, easy to understand and difficult enough for some of your more entrenched board gamers. In general, I find this a great starter to transition from your Milton Bradley games everyone knows (and hates) into board games that offer sustenance.

Secondly, I offer Sushi Go (cheating a bit here as you'll probably have to buy a couple copies for larger groups or just get Sushi Go Party). Sushi Go is our groups go-to game to introduce games that use a drafting mechanic and to teach that board games can be cute, fun, and delightful while also requiring strategy, maths, and a bit of hope (our group tends to dislike dice-rolling games so for the most part, we stick to games where we can mostly "control" our own fates - YMMV). This game is super quick, so you don't get bogged down at the table for hours. I feel for new board gamers, quicker games are a MUST as many people may not be able to handle the length many of our Beloveds require.

7 Wonders comes next. We tend to introduce this game right after Sushi Go as the mechanics are super similar and the newer players feel like they already know what's going on for the most part. There will be questions, there will be some confusion and oversight, but this game follows easily and feels like a natural step up from Sushi Go and gets players right into the mix of heartier board games. Oh, and I could personally play 7 Wonders every week, especially with all the options offered through the expansions Cities, Leaders, and Tower. The interchangeability of these expansions has kept this game on our table long past many others and continues to bring it back. Again though, YMMV as we all have different tastes.

Tsuro, our board game palatte cleanser. This is another quick game which offers a lot of replayabiliity with minimal rules learning. Aside from those positives, the artwork is what sent this board game over the top for me. I am mesmerized by the board, the tiles, and the pieces each time we open this. This game offers a quick break between your heavier meeple-laiden board games so even after we've surpassed "newb" status, we often come back to this.

Castles of Burgundy I included as a final game because ultimately, we need a game with a strong theme and wonderful mechanics which offer replayability from a more traditional Euro point of view. This game really surprised me. I loved it the first time we played it, and though it may not hit the table but once every other month due to time constraints, it always feels like reuniting with an old friend. It offers a setup for further Euro games and sets the scene on what's really out there in weightier board games. I know there could be other games that fit this description, but at the price, this game is amazing for what it offers.

And that's the list. I know there are many criticisms of these games and I don't devalue those. All my favorites have points in them where they fall a little flat at times, or don't elicit the enjoyment I thought they might, but many times, it's usually my perception and frame of mind. I can often come back months later with renewed enjoyment for them, so trust me, I know there are imperfections; I just choose to ignore them for the post. These games, while some may take a bit longer to learn, offer a great springboard into board games and offer the new player a slow wade into the pool without feeling too slow or drab as one might feel with something like Settlers of Catan. Will I stand by this opinion in 5 or 10 years? We'll see.

u/iamreeterskeeter · 3 pointsr/JUSTNOMIL

I will make a humble suggestion that I think you boys would enjoy doing as well. Purchase the game Five Crowns. It's a rummy style card game and my family has LOOOOVED it since we found it 20 years ago. Make a bunch of snacks and drinks and settle in. The best part is that you don't hold back on your frustration when someone does something you don't like.

When we play this game, or really any board game, our family dynamic devolves into threats of divorce, dismemberment, and death. All in good fun of course and it makes us howl in laughter. My sweet, sings in the choir, Catholic mother has been known to yell "YOU WHORE!" when a unhelpful card is played. My sister eyeballs her husband and tell him to put down a helpful card of he's sleeping outside tonight. We keep score and there is usually a score sheet always hanging on the fridge from the latest game.

When I was a teen if my friends heard that my family had family game night and they hadn't been invited, they would pout. We used to invite the neighbors because we would get so loud we didn't want anyone to inadvertently call the cops.

It's a great way to get some fun childhood play in and bond with your kids. Oh! Another FABULOUS game is Redneck Life. It's the game of life, redneck style and it's hilarious.

Zombie Cards

These cards are awesome don't you see?

These cards definitely belong with me.

I think of all the games I could play.

Poker, War, Blackjack games all day.

I would carry these cards with me all the time.

They would most certainly be worth every dime.

So that is why I choose these cards for me.

I'd like to play some games and drink some tea.

----

I love cards, yes it's true.

I love cards, how about you?

All type of things you can do.

Play solo or play them with a crew.

Be it that you lose or perhaps you won.

Doesn't really matter cause they are lots of fun.

If you can find a group of friends, maybe take up board games or card games? There's a really fun card game called DC Deck Building Game that I play with my friends. It's nice because you don't need to buy any extra cards; all the cards you need to play come in the original box. It takes about 30-45 minutes to play a round, you can play with 2-5 people. It's a ton of fun and goes well with another favorite hobby of mine, craft beer drinking!

Hello u/r00nwit,
My name is Kara and I handcraft Secret Safe Books which are real books made into hollow books with magnetic closures, which could hold all sorts of small treasures, including of course, cash.

Some of my suggestions which are at different price points, from $39.99 - $72.99 ~

u/DnDYetti · 3 pointsr/secretsanta

Just some ideas from someone who finished college not too long ago (All gifts from Amazon).

u/Chls122 · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

its a lot of fun and a nice way to test out your creativity in telling short stories. There are also story games that have helped me to organize my thoughts better. There's two of them I highly recommend: Once Upon a Time ( https://www.amazon.com/Atlas-Games-ATG1030-Once-Upon/dp/1589781317 ) and The Fool's Journey ( https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/154421/The-Fools-Journey ). Its great if you can play with people who are excellent story tellers.

u/Applejaxc · 1 pointr/CasualConversation

I started playing D&D when I was 7. I've been enjoying it (and the general fantasy zeitgeist) for 12 years now. It was a jumping point for actually caring about math, writing skills, interpersonal skills, puzzle solving, critical thinking...

I think Dungeonworld might be solo based?

I cannot recommend Once Upon a Time more. I've bought it twice. It's a card-based storytelling game where every player cooperates to tell the same continuous narrative, but everyone has a different ending to reach and different cards to play. If you think your 7 year old likes telling stories I think it's a great investment.

And it scales from 2 to (I think) 9 players, although once you pass ~5 it starts to get silly. There's expansions focused on specific fairy tale genres, like knights saving princesses or pirates fighting squids.

u/costofanarchy · 1 pointr/lrcast

Sushi Go - Amazon US - $12

Sushi Go Party - Amazon - $20

As I mentioned above, I far prefer the party version and think it's worth the $8 extra; it's more than twice the "content" whereas the original is always the same. I'd only recommend the original over "Party" if a super portable game (about the size of two standard decks of cards) is useful to you.

u/SexualCannibalism · 4 pointsr/Gifts

You could get her a r ally hilarious game like Exploding Kittens to play when she meets new people? It's a simple, quick, hilarious game, and even just reading the cards gets a laugh. There's a NSFW and a clean edition, so make sure you choose wisely!

u/Mik0ri · 2 pointsr/boardgames

I love my Virts. Admittedly, I personally don't usually play with them, but they're designed to be an effortless shuffle and easy to prestidigitate. They're a decently cheap price, only about $16, and definitely worth it. They're beautiful.

This picture is actually on my fridge. We had //just// gotten her and she was sitting in boxes all the time and jumped into a box that I was wrapping christmas presents in and then storing nice and neat. When we weren't looking, she would lean down and oh so delicately nibble the cardboard or the presents then look so innocent when caught :points to the picture:

Or paper.

Or any paper and cardboard or card stock. She's got a think for paper.

I have a thing for cardstock of another nature, if I can so be indulged if I win and/or some stars and planets to make a Dr. Who bedroom just that more awesome. Because it's just the same unless the tardis has the universe around it!

Edit: Raffle phrase! IF I FITS I SITS ... She sat.

Hooray for zombies!

From everything that I have seen or read about a potential zombie apocalypse, I have learned one thing: do not be one of the people making a run for it. The people that try to drive and run in the open end up dying the fastest. I plan on meeting up with my brother-in-law who is a marine/state trooper and fortifying a home.

As for bringing along celebrities, I would choose Anthony Bourdain because he is funny and can cook. I think an athlete would make a good member of the group to help with scavenging, so I would choose Rajon Rondo; I bleed blue! For people that don't know what that means, I am a huge University of Kentucky fan. It also doesn't hurt that I am still in school there either.

u/SteveThomas · 4 pointsr/Fantasy

There's a card game called Once Upon a Time.

It's designed to be a collaborative story telling game. Each player has a hand of cards, each containing a story element (character, item, etc.). They also have a one-sentence ending. One player at a time is the narrator and is trying to play out their hand by fitting each card into the story and landing on their pre-defined ending. The power of narration changes hands through an interrupt system.

That game would be easily converted into a writing prompt generator. Just deal kids a few cards and an ending, and tell them to turn that into a fairy tale. The best part is that it would be randomized, so you don't have to think of a pile of ideas on your own.

u/EndersGame_Reviewer · 1 pointr/playingcards

Cheers and thanks. The Queen of Hearts is included as an extra gaff card (e.g. you could do a colour changing deck routine).

It's hilarious reading some of the negative reviews on Amazon for this deck (link). Lots of buyers didn't realize it's extra card (and that the deck does have a red-backed Queen of Hearts as well), and put in complaints that something was wrong with the deck! I've posted some good examples in another thread on Reddit (here).

u/circuitGal · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

It's nice to meet you!

here is an item, but feel free to choose something else!!

Also, what is the biggest difference between your hometown and where you live now? :)

u/taicrunch · 1 pointr/hearthstone

It's based on other deck-building games like the DC one. It's a lot of fun, and Blizz did a great job translating it to a digital format. I do agree, though, that snowballing is a common issue in this type of game.

u/StuffHobbes · 11 pointsr/pics

The briefcases are Solo Grand Central Attaché Cases.
On the outside each one got an Engraved Plaque with the groomsman's name and nickname.
The axe is a Columbia River CRKT Birler Compact Axe.
The liqueur is a small bottle of JW Black Label 200ml.
The little silver oval is a collapsible shot glass.
Vintage Bicycle Cards.
The inside is cut EVA foam stacked three high, carved to hold the items, glued together, covered in red velvet cloth from Hobby Lobby, adhered with Gorilla spray adhesive.
The straps are leather bracelets (also from Hobby Lobby) dyed black using Fiebing's Leather Dye, with a bronze topper (brads?) to cover the screw anchoring them in place.
I don't have a good shot of the inside top, but there is a cigar (I forget which brand, I'm not really a cigar guy). They were rectangular. You can see it at the top of the third shot.
Also a silver pen, a cigar cutter, a small survival tool, a credit card knife, and an Oz-Kurt engraved flip knife.
I also wrapped the axe handle in a Leather strapping to give it some extra texture.

Whelp, I THINK that's everything. Thanks for taking interest in my post!

OH! And the Kikkerland Chemistry 101 Flask Book

u/Bwob · 6 pointsr/Magic

Ahh, maybe it's an Amazon vs. Ellusionist thing - On the Ellusionist page it makes it super clear that they're marked - big bold letters, right at the top, and even talks about how nicely they are hidden in the back design.

On the Amazon page it still says that they're marked, but it's in a bullet-point in the product description, and is probably easier for someone to miss.

Still kind of funny to me though - people buying it and being upset thinking that the bonus queen means they have an incomplete deck, without realizing that there is an even more fundamental reason why they oughtn't be using the deck for poker night...

u/_C00KIE_M · 2 pointsr/cardistry

They are kinda hard to come by and are expensive cards. They are called Virtuoso SS16 Playing Cards
Amazon has some for 30$ a deck.

I do a bit, but I haven't had time to play much the last few months. I'm more likely to indulge in a video game at the moment, and have been hooked on FTL lately (thank you, Steam sale!). It's more of a card game, but I really enjoy playing Once Upon a Time with my writers group. The point is to use the cards you've been dealt (characters, events, settings, etc) to turn the story around to your "ending". Watching a bunch of writers try to stretch the tale to make sense is hilarious.

Yes, I do. So does the rest of the world. Your taste buds are wrong, Ball, WRONG!

I got a bunch of sheet protectors for my group.
They go in some dollar store binders with lined scratch paper and some trading card sleeves to put hand written spell and item cards. Combine with cheap dry/wet erase markers and a pencil, and they're good to go for several campaigns.

We are all about 2-player games! Off the top of my head, we love Quarriors and DC Deck Building Game. Both can be played with groups of people but also work well with just the two of us. (There's a Marvel Deck Building Game too, but the gameplay is completely different and not as fun in my opinion. The five crowns deck is probably closest to what you want since stardeck isn't around anymore. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00000IV35/

I have a vintage eagle deck from uspcc and those can still be found, but will cost at a bit and not really for playing due to more collectable. Decket and monster deck would fit the bill, but more full alternative suits. Rage game may work for you too.

There are also a number of similar custom decks with 5 or 6 suits on game crafter.
