No one's commented and I couldn't find any other postings concerning this topic, I'll just share some things I learned on my way to installing the Eiseng Leather steering wheel cover.

Conclusion
- I love the finished product, and the process wasn't painful. The process took around 4 hours but it wasn't unbearable as the stitching process can be quite meditative. You can also listen to your favorite music or netflix special.

Few things I would do differently next time.

  1. The same type of steering wheel cover seems to be available from multiple vendors at varying prices. I might just go with the cheapest one next time
    - $29 : lowest price. Can't tell if there's any difference in quality from visual inspection
    - $43 : The product I installed
    - $62 : Premium option with more choices for leather colors

  2. Take more time aligning the leather pieces around the spokes.
    - These covers use two-sided tapes to hold the cover in place. This gives it a really clean look, but makes adjusting the position of the leather more difficult.
    - I would spend more time making sure all the edges of the leather pieces are aligned perfectly after wrapping the pieces around the steering wheel. This was mentioned on the instructions but I could not understand what it meant. What this means is that the edges of the leather flaps that wrap around the spokes should line up perfectly.

  3. Do it in a well lit area.
    - Having a kid, it's hard to do these things during the day, but the process would have been much easier if there was more light. It's not impossible, but you might have to adjust the flashlight constantly.

  4. Remove all the tapes before sewing! I forgot to do this, so part of the wheel still has tape in it.

hope this helps anyone who decides to do this. Despite all the mistakes and rough edges, I am extremely happy with the result. It feels much better than the stock plastic steering wheels.

Don't buy a whole new steering wheel. Then you'd have to get it installed and shit. That sounds awful. If it doesn't come out the way you like just get a cover. No, not the shit ones from autozone. They do make stitch on steering wheel covers. Yes it takes a little time but it looks light years better than a slip over Walmart/autozone cover that will undoubtedly be low quality and feature a car company logo, faux fur, camouflage, or bedazzling for some reason.

A quick Amazon searched yielded this guy. I didn't do an exhaustive search so there may be better deals/colors/higher quality/ect out there; not sure. Also you can do whatever color stitching you'd like if you prefer a custom look.

I'd say it's a much better option than a whole new wheel plus the labor costs.

Just my 2¢

All that being said, I'm quite certain you could clean that with some APC, a boars hair brush and a microfiber cloth. If not, look into a steam cleaner. I'm always impressed with what my steam cleaner can accomplish.

Hello, beauty. Welcome to the Mustang Club. The red one is Rudy, and the blue one started off as Renegade until a dream I had where it was actually a Transformer and told me its name is Wanderlust (which is fitting, as I'm almost 60k miles in after a little over 3 years).

Do you feel like she's an old lady or a dignified younger woman? For old lady I like Blanche, or Bianca for the younger option.

I definitely suggest some kind of car garbage can. Even Wanderlust ends up cluttered, and a small garbage container looks better than a plastic bag hooked on the glovebox. I would keep a bunch of plastic bags folded in the bottom, with the one currently being used pulled up like a regular garbage bag, so you can just take the bag with you to toss it and pop a new one into place.

I also suggest a steering wheel cover if the wheel is factory original. I have that one in Rudy.

And while it may not be allowed, I'm always a fan of a little ornamentation hanging from the rear view. Wanderlust has a pentagram that's been in every vehicle I've ever owned, and it has a veteran poppy wrapped around the string.

I also strongly suggest you keep a car charger ONLY in the car that you do NOT remove to other vehicles. That way, you always know that you'll have a way to charge your phone.

And I personally keep a set of reflective triangles in my trunk along with the standard roadside emergency kit, gives a little added peace of mind if you ever break down. People are stupid and tend not to notice a broken down car. I'm a police dispatcher and I've had a lot of calls of a disabled vehicle getting hit by someone who didn't notice them.

this for my Girlfriend. She is the most wonderful girl I've ever met! i was with my Ex for 8 years and i never wanted to marry her. I've been with my GF for just over a year and i already bought a ring. She is my rock. She is my moon and stars. She is my best friend. I
love everything about her; the way she always has my back, the way she makes appointments for me cause she knows what i need to take care of before i even know; i love that even when shes annoying or being a butt that i still want to be around her. she my person and i know 2 things for sure... 1. i will never be able to give her everything she deserves, and 2. i will never stop trying to...

I installed this cover over my slippery wheel. Looks decent if you take your time and string it up even and tight. Feels pretty good too. I was pleasantly surprised.

Thanks for the contest!

This PR class is nuts

My favorite is my digital photography 4 class. We get to use this view camera, but with a digital back, and it's one of the most amazing things I've ever used. I love the work thats coming out of my class!

I know this isn’t what you’re asking for, and it’s not carbon fiber. But if you’re interested in a set of replacements rather than stick on extensions you should check these out. I just put them in my DSG and man they feel really solid and look amazing. Come in a few different colors, and the price is tough to beat.

Super Easy installation as well.

Get a stitched leather wheel cover. There are real leather one, but you can also get faux leather ones for cheap.

I got this one from Amazon for $8. It took me about 1.5 hours to stitch it on and it looks and feels amazing. It's holding up really well, still looks good after 2.5 years in Texas heat.

u/lightzalot · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I want this so I stop burning myself on the steering wheel!

Butts are super funny!

Thanks for the contest! :)

Not OP but they look like the ones I recently ordered from AliExpress -
https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/rgZI7MZ6

Edit: it looks like these are also available on Amazon. They may be a few bucks more but I wish I ordered them from Amazon instead of waiting weeks if not more for them to arrive from China.

Hello,

There is no need to replace the steering wheel. Just buy the leather cover and stitch it. It sounds like a difficult project but its not. All you have to do is stick to the pattern and make sure the cover wraps around evenly around the original steering wheel (the front part of the cover should align with the other side). The effect is well worth it; the steering wheel with the cover ON looks better than new stock:

I like it a lot! I’ve had it for 3-4 months now and it’s held up pretty well. Certainly beats the molded plastic that’s underneath it. My stitch job is not the best, but I learned as I went along, and I’m sure you could get a better result than I did if you invested more time. I got it off of Amazon from Eiseng: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06ZYNDC36/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_bgPHDbCCMHXW4

Vroom Vroom!

a steering wheel cover would be very comfortable.

if i win id like to be surprised!

u/raptor2skooled · 1 pointr/mazda6

The part number for the steering wheel is; TK49-32-982A-02, but is something like $200+. This is actually a high-quality cover (not the cheap target covers and will take some time to install) amazon link, but I think it looks really good. Otherwise, like you said you can go aftermarket or get the leather redone by a professional.

u/z3ro_ne · 4 pointsr/subaruimpreza

Had the same sort of issue with my Silverado.

I bought one of these and I sort of forget I even have a cover on there because it's so thin and fits tight. It's not 100% perfect, but it's a million times better than those shitty steering wheel covers you can get at AutoZone and the like.

11 bucks might ease your mind enough to save $200 (300?) vs replacing it entirely. The real deciding factor on whether or not it comes out well is how patient you are when threading it (it's pre-punched so you just go through the loops and tighten it up) and how well you do when you skip the spots where the spokes connect to the wheel.

Also, I'm not sure what material your steering wheel is covered with, so the feel might be a little different. My Chevy had a little more of a plastic feel to the factory wheel so this actually ended up being a bit of an upgrade for me.

u/juicebox244 · 1 pointr/4Runner

This is the one I got, also got the matching seat covers. Actually got some compliments about them. They also clean super easy.

u/addocd · 3 pointsr/Hyperhidrosis

I used to have something like this steering wheel cover that was helpful. Of course, it turned gross after a few months (same goop that gets on your mouse, keyboard and anywhere else you keep your hands), but it was helpful.

To be honest, I've never really felt like my sweaty hands were much of a safety issue while driving. Although, I did make that argument to my insurance company when asking them to pay for treatment. ;-)

u/ReverendDexter · 6 pointsr/askcarguys

So one of the best things I ever did to my beaters is one of the stitch-on leather steering wheel wraps. They take about an hour to put on, but it improves the feeling of a cheap plastic wheel 1000x and they're less than $15. Take your time when doing the stitching, though, a rush job will be noticeable once you're done.

What I'm talking about is something like this.

u/SamSzmith · 1 pointr/GolfGTI

Also, ODB11 has some good mods, but if you want something really cheap, you can get Carista for $20 and do a bunch of changes like the windows down / up on keyfob, turn off soundaktor, change asr behavior, etc. Keep in mind, Carista app costs money, but you get a free 30 days and the mods stick once you apply them.

u/batmanbaby · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Ahhhh congrats on the wheels!

These are adorable and you of course need this and plus, its pretty cheap!

But in all seriousness seat covers and a steering wheel cover were the first things i put in my car.

Surprise me!!

  • When I finally became of driving age, my grandfather (we kindly call him grandpappy) taught me how to check my fluids in my car, and tucked a tiny rag in my glove box, so when I checked my oil, I could wipe off the old oil on the stick, and get a proper read. He's the sweetest.

  • I'd like this steering wheel cover if I win!

  • I'm saving it for later.
u/je-june · 1 pointr/mazda3

I'd recommend paying a little extra for a genuine leather Wheelskin.
Best price I've found from Auto Anything (look for coupon codes online)

I put a cheap $10 one on my old car and my GF's Hyundai.

The difference is worth it! The cheap one is thin and slips a bit. The Wheelskin is way thicker leather and fits better.

Both are a pain in the ass to apply so if you're going to go through all that effort, might as well spend the extra money on a nice on.

u/RedditAccount2416 · 38 pointsr/Justrolledintotheshop

Get the stitch on kind, they actually stay pretty well.

Like this https://smile.amazon.com/AULLY-PARK-Universal-Steering-Genuine/dp/B018FM4X2K/

u/seacritasianman · 1 pointr/mazda3

I got this one from amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Lemonbest-C0196-Universal-Steering-Stitch/dp/B00PC0G07A/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1486757630&sr=8-5&keywords=lemonbest

Much cheaper, and it works great. It's not really thick, but it has a nice soft feel.

u/TelaTheSpy · 4 pointsr/GolfGTI

Yep. I've had full replacement paddles for about 2 years and am currently running the $25 ones in this video. Good product.

S2T is ripping people off IMO.

PSA Also be aware that there are a couple versions of these Chinese paddles floating around. The cheaper ones DO NOT have cut through + and - symbols, they are printed on. Their overall fit and finish are poor, so look closely at the images when you are ordering to ensure you're getting the good ones.

These look legit to me - https://www.amazon.com/Steering-Shifters-Replacement-Volkswagen-2014-2019/dp/B07WDBCL7M/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=MK7%2BDSG%2Bpaddle&qid=1567698139&s=gateway&sr=8-3&th=1

This is just one of those cheap slip-on covers. They have much better real leather sew-on covers on Amazon that look exactly like factory covers. Here's an example

u/majikmike · 2 pointsr/granturismo

I highly recommend this:Next Level Racing wheel stand.

It's incredible stable, no center bar, full adjustable, and 100x better than my custom TV stand that I outfitted with metal plates for added stability and worked well with my G25 for about 7 years - I would place about 20lbs of free weights on top to stop the wobble. Now that I updated to a FANATEC I needed something better. I was skeptical at first but after 6 months of continued use I wouldnt go any other way.

Here's the link for the steering wheel: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00PC0G07A/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And here is the thread: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00N4IKOO2/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1

You simply line it up on the wheel and measure 8 times the thread for each segment (two 10" = 160" thread - remember it's double fed, and one 20" = 320" thread).

Here is the video I went by: https://youtu.be/n9hNSkl0eKI

I made it up as I went, made sure everything was lined up and tight. If you look closely you can see my knots - but rather be safe than sorry in regards to it coming undone.

u/kodillac · 3 pointsr/cars

I like the cheesy vinyl/leather sport grip ones that look like they came out of a 1980's muscle car. I have one on my jeep.

I'm late to the party, but steering wheel covers:

maybe Darth Vader, for the Star Wars fan:

If you look at additional purchased items, you'll see Darth vader floor mats and Darth vader seat covers (both of which are also good ideas to personalize your car. Even if you don't like Vader, of course, you can find others you might like...)

(There is also a batman you can find)
