For appointments, I recommend getting a slashproof bag with locking cable. Once you've received the cash, test it for counterfeits. Then put it (and other valuables) in the bag, and lock the bag to the plumbing under the bathroom sink.

For traveling between locations, use a money belt or a stash bra. I recommend keeping a decoy wallet with some cash and expired cards in it, so that if you are mugged, you can give them your decoy, while keeping the rest of your cash safe.

For storing cash at home, I'd make one or more "pipesafes" with some black iron pipe. Wrap and band the cash, then put it in a fire resistant bag. Then put it in the pipe, and plug the pipe with a pair of "test plugs". You can see what I mean at this instructable for making a survival cache with PVC pipe.

I recommend using black iron pipe instead of PVC because it provides some fire resistance, but you can use PVC pipe instead. You can find black iron pipe at hardware stores, and "test plugs" can be ordered online or purchased through plumbing supply stores.

Split up your money among several "pipesafes" in different locations around your apartment. That way, if you're ever robbed, the thieves may find some of your money, but they probably won't find all of your money. The best places to hide your pipesafes will vary from location to location, so you'll want to size them to fit in your preferred hiding spaces.

Be sure to write down your pipesafe locations somewhere! You will forget where they are!
I recommend storing them as a note in bitwarden, then give your bitwarden account info to a trusted friend or relative. That way, if you die or get sick/injured, your loved ones can find them and access your funds.

Why not a safe, you might ask? A safe can also work. However, thieves know to look for safes. If the safe is portable, they can just tear it out of the wall and walk out with it.

If the safe is heavy enough to prevent easy transport, then it will be a pain the butt for you to move as well. Most sex workers are young, and move or travel frequently. Pipesafes can be moved relatively easily. Plus, you could leave them behind if need be, as they're not that expensive to make.

How much cash should you keep on hand? That will vary depending on your circumstances and risk tolerance.

Personally, I would first build up a cash emergency fund of about $5 K for unexpected expenses, like car repair, "get out of dodge money" (stalker, legal action), medical bills, etc. Top up this fund as you make payouts from it.

Next, I would pre-pay a $5 K retainer with criminal defense attorney who has successfully defended a number of sex work cases. If you're ever in legal trouble, the cops may freeze your assets, making it difficult to hire someone to defend you. Prostitution / solicitation cases cost between $5 - $25 K to defend, so pre-paying at least enough to get started is a good idea.

Eventually, however, you'll probably want to deposit much of your cash in a bank account. If you ever want to purchase a house or car, having an established history of regular cashflow will be necessary. A bank account also makes it much easier to interface with the rest of the financial system.

However, any funds you deposit will become known to the IRS. So you should expect to pay taxes on those funds. You'll need to set aside around 30% of those funds for tax payments.

As an anti-money laundering and anti-tax avoidance measure, banks are required to report cash deposits / withdrawals (called a Cash Transaction Report for CTR) greater than $10000 to the government. Most banks have systems that send these reports automatically, electronically, along with your tax information.

Bank staff can optionally flag and any cash transaction as "suspicious", known as a Suspicious Activity Report (SAR). For example, they might flag a deposit as "suspicious" if they think it was artificially structured to avoid the reporting requirement. (For example, making four deposits of $2499 in a 24 hour period might cause them to make a SAR.)

Due to previous government crackdowns on politically unpopular groups (gun dealers, payday loan vendors, sex workers), banks and other financial institutions are particularly skittish about providing services to sex workers.

So, if you suddenly start making a lot of cash deposits, the bank will likely ask you the source of your funds. If you don't have a good answer, they may close your account. So, be sure to have a plausible story for the source of the cash before you start making significant deposits.

Brokerages, currency exchanges, precious metals dealers and other financial institutions have similar Know Your Customer / Anti-Money Laundering regulations.

You could get something like this to keep your ID and cash in and tuck it under your shirt. Then use whatever bag you want. My sister studied abroad there. When I went to visit we stuck out as tourist, but I felt good in the large group we were always in. One of her friends crossbody bag was ripped off of her from a guy on a scouter one night. She was standing alone outside of a bar. Just stay aware of your surroundings and don’t put your things down. I personally was not comfortable wearing things that made me stand out anymore than I already did. Enjoy your trip!! It was definitely one of my favorite places to visit!!! 😊

u/hollykincaid · 2 pointsr/HerOneBag

I love packing cubes and absolutely swear by them for organization and some compression. On the trip I just got back from, I used compression packing cubes and feel like I found the holy grail of packing. I bought the more expensive Eagle Creek ones and these packing cubes . I saw no difference in quality between the less expensive option and the Eagle Creek bags. I love them and the small ones work the best for me. I put them vertically into the valleys created by the handle in my rolling bag.

I also love the fact that I can slide them into drawers or onto shelves in a hotel room and it’s more sanitary.

Repacking is a breeze.

Love them !

I daily carry a GORUCK GR1. I chose this pack because of how ridiculously overbuilt it is. Prior to getting the GR1, I carried less and I generally still couldn't go more than 6 months at best without ripping or destroying my packs. I also like that it doesn't have much built in organization. I prefer to create my own organizational system rather than use the one mandated by the pack. This is the primary reason I chose this over similar high quality options such as the Tom Bihn Synapse 25.

Also, I know there is a serious lack of cool hacking tools. Unfortunately I am currently in a more defensive than offensive cybersecurity position, so I don't really carry a lot of stuff around with me like I used to when I was red team.

On the front you can see that I have a Grimloc biner in case I need to attach anything to my pack. I also have a Gonex water bottle pouch and a large water bottle. On the back of the pack I have a pouch with my EDC Zebralight on the shoulder strap for easy access while wearing the ruck.

u/Chernoobyl · 2 pointsr/Goruck

My GR1 is one of the best pieces of gear I own, flawless for my needs. Here's a comment I left a month or so back with a few pouches/organization stuff I use inside my GR1. I plan to do a video of my setup, been perfecting it over the years and some may find it useful. Here's the list of stuff I use inside my bag:

Toiletry kit (I love the mesh top and little handle) - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F9S8DK2/

This is what I keep my portable battery and charging cables in -
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B014PM4AL8

I use several of these amazing Kifaru pullouts (the large mesh for my rain coat, the ultralight small for my vape and extra cartridges, the 500d small for my "possibles kit", and I keep a xlarge ultralight tucked in the little inside pocket for wet clothes or shoes to go in) - https://store.kifaru.net/500d-pullouts-p185.aspx

Ultralight pullout here - https://store.kifaru.net/ultralight-pullouts-p22.aspx

I use a Tactical Tailor Fight Light Admin Pouch in the upper molle area for my pens/notebook/sunscreen/hand sanitizer/small screwdriver..etc - https://www.tacticaltailor.com/fightlightadminpouchenhanced.aspx

This is what I use for my first aid kit (perfect size imo)- https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LZWEIQE

And I use one of these amazing quick clips from Alldayruckoff to clip gloves and a small fire kit and my keys if I need to clip them inside - https://alldayruckoff.com/store/gear/hk-quick-clip/

Cash and ATM cards work best. It can be hard to reliably find places that take credit cards, but ATM cards are becoming as ubiquitous in Asia as other parts of the world. I always happily accepted any fees, as they were not extravagant.

Under no circumstances use travelers checks. That's just taking a day out of your life to sit in a bank somewhere filling out forms in triplicate (without carbon paper) and providing an endless stream of signatures. I usually carry a few $100 bills in a belt with a zippered compartment like this one - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001RW7HCO/. Keep those bills for backup, though, and try to just get cash out of ATM machines (in local currencies).

You should be able to purchase a used candybar cellphone in most countries for $10 or so, and pre-paid minutes go for about $0.10-.20. Your smart phone or tablet would still be handy for taking pictures, checking e-mail, browsing the web, etc.

I use Eagle Creek Pack It Quick Trip Toiletry Organizer, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00F9S8YTM/ It packs well for travel and has a mesh side where I can store a damp brush. This is big enough to carry a puck in a ~5oz container, bottle of aftershave, bottle of cologne, brush, razor in case, alum block, toothbrush, nail clippers, comb, and a small jar of pomade.

For protecting the DE, I have this Parker Safety Razor's Felt Lined Genuine Leather Double Edge Safety Razor Protective/Travel Case https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001O8NCI4/ which I highly recommend. It fits a Fat Boy and other similarly sized DE's.

For storing blades, I use two Altoids minis tins. One for new blades, the other for used. I have a blade bank that I keep at home to properly dispose of the blades.

The only thing I haven't quite solved is a bowl for lathering. I don't like the face lather as it screws up my face making it red. So I either make it on my hand, of find a glass, mug, or bowl at my hotel. I'd love to hear ideas to travel with a bowl.

I've yet to fly with this setup. I plan to just throw a disposable in there and empty the DE and Altoids tins. Then pray that I can find a pharmacy that sells DE blades at my destination.

Good luck and safe travels!

I use the Chrome Bravo and it has been the best bike bag I’ve ever had! Very high quality, waterproof and not too heavy either. Separate compartment for laptop/tablet as well as extendable main compartment that fits work clothes and a pair of shoes as well as my lunch. I usually strap my u-lock to the outside.
I’ve combined this bag with the Eagle Creek Pack-It Garment Folder and it keeps my clothes neatly folded and protected from any lunchbox spills. It’s been a great system for me over the last 4 years!

u/caverunner17 · 2 pointsr/backpacking

This is the pack I've used for a few years and love it. The huge zippered compartment makes getting things in and out of your pack easy, and more importantly it is 100% carry on compatible sized.

Kelty Redwing 44

I'd also get a set of packing cubes like this. Helps keep clothes organized -- I put my underwear and socks in one and my shirts and extra shorts in the other.

u/Hakote · 3 pointsr/onebag

Lush has some pretty great conditioner bars and solid toothpaste tablets. You could also try a tiny bit of coconut oil in a GoTubb. I also tend to squeeze a bit of toothpaste into a small GoTubb, and use the third in the set for something like melatonin pills or a little Lucas Papaw Ointment

I like to keep my soaps in something like this locking case. A normal setup for me would be a chunk of solid shampoo, a chunk of solid conditioner, a chunk of Dr. Bronners, and a chunk of charcoal exfoliating soap like Lush's Coalface.

I use my huge Sonicare Diamondclean toothbrush for every day and travel, but if you want something more compact you could try a basic Oral-B electric toothbrush and a cover for the head like this one.

u/BohoPhoenix · 2 pointsr/travel

Not OP, but I have two different sets: one from TravelWise and one from eBags. I like the versatility of having the different options depending on what I'm doing, but I think the Slim ones are my favorite. I've never used the large one from TravelWise, but the medium and small have been great too!

u/ediblebear · 1 pointr/femalefashionadvice

I definitely use packing cubes every time I travel, and even started buying them for other people to spread the gospel of packing cubes. I currently use the Eagle Creek garment folder for blouses, shirts, and dresses or anything else that's easily wrinkled, one of the two-sided cubed for all other clothing, and one of the two-sided half cubes for undergarments. All of this fits inside a standard carry on suitcase with room to spare for 2-3 pairs of shoes, and can get me through more than a week's worth of travel.

I'm actually able to pack far more with packing cubes, since once you squish clothing into the cube and zip it up, it'll stay exactly that size. Nothing even wrinkles with the garment bag, so I can bring nicer clothes on trips.

I especially like bringing the two sided cube for shorter trips, since I can juse pack one side with rollable clothes like sweaters, t-shirts pants, and underwear and still be able to pack the other side with a flat, folded shirt and/or dress.

Basically, packing cubes have changed my life and you should get them.

What if you did just 1 gift + the airline ticket per day, so that you could get her a higher-quality thing, since she has high standards? Basically more value for money? Especially if you have Amazon Prime, you could get it all shipped to you in one go.

This is mine. It was a wedding gift.

It's a little larger than I'd have chosen if I'd bought one myself but it's pretty great.

u/sad-king-billy · 3 pointsr/onebag

I have two sets of the ebags assorted size cubes and I love them. I also have one of the smaller Eagle Creek ones and that's equally as good. The ebags cubes seem like they'd be easier to clean if something gets on them, but I've never had to. If you get the assorted sizes, the biggest size is probably too big for a carryon. For carry-ons, I use one medium size cube and one of these if I need some shirts. Fits nicely into my backpack and I still have plenty of room for electronics/gear.

u/cobbers83 · 1 pointr/onebag

Very well made, ideal for carrying passport & credit/atm cards.

Basically a portable safe, it's not going to stop anyone who's pre-mediated and determined to steal your stuff but 99.999% of theft from rooms while traveling is opportunistic (the maid has a poke around in your stuff). Personally locking my laptop + passport + cash in that makes me feel a lot happier when I'm out and about.

My razor.

My pre-shave oil

My soap

My bowl I don't use the rest of that stuff anymore.

My face wash and moisturizer

My current aftershave. Got this from my wife who found it at a thrift store.

My brush is vintage, it's a badger hair brush.

My Process

  1. Turn on your faucet and let the water heat up as hot as you can stand it without jeopardizing your comfort.
  2. Put your shaving brush in the shaving bowl, and fill it with hot water until the bristles are inundated. Let it soak until you start shaving.
  3. Wash your face with some face wash to remove excess dirt.
  4. Soak a towel in the hot water and apply it to your face for at least thirty seconds, remembering to mind the neck. This will open your pores and expand the skin around the whiskers.
  5. Massage a shaving oil into your beard.
  6. Ring out your brush gently with your hands, and put it in the container of soap (the soap should not be put in the shaving bowl).
  7. Use a gentle circular motion to apply the soap to the brush.
  8. Put the brush in the bowl and work up a thick lather by brushing in a circular motion.
  9. Apply the soap to your beard in a paintbrush motion—do not do this circularly or you may damage the bristles of your brush.
  10. Pull your skin tight as possible in the area you will shave, and place the razor at a 30 degree angle (or less) against your face.
  11. Shave gently in a zig-or-zag fashion with the grain of your whiskers. Shaving slightly at an angle with the grain will produce a closer shave.
  12. Wipe off the blade on your towel, or run it under cold water. The cold water will make the space between atoms of metal contract, whereas hot water will make it expand. You'll want it to contract because it will produce a smoother shave.
  13. Once you have completed the shave, lather up and do it again—the second pass—in order to get a very close shave. You do not need to reapply shaving oil.
  14. Splash some cool water on your face to contract the pores.
  15. Run an alum bar over your face.
  16. Apply an aftershave and moisturizer, and, after a few seconds, pat your face with a towel to remove excess liquids.

My Travel Kit (so pimp...I travel a lot for work).

My passport was warped to the shape of the side of my body after a day of wearing that around but it's because after sliding it around I settled on it being more comfortable to have everything on my side than my front. Didn't affect getting back into the US via Global Entry. If you really care then on a daily basis alternate which side of your passport is facing toward your body while it's in the belt to even out the warping.

I wasn't thrilled about having to walk around with my passport but I did a couple of Airbnbs where I had a room not the whole apartment (as opposed to being able to use a hotel room safe). I felt much better about having this thing strapped under my pants than having to worry about being pickpocketed.

That said I would advise not keeping anything other than your passport in there unless you're willing to go into a private space like a bathroom every time you need to get something out of it. It rather defeats the purpose of such a belt if you let everyone around you see that you're wearing one. I used my usual money clip stored in my left pocket for my cash/cards/etc.

Victorinox travel wallet. Super handy for keeping all your documents together. Best travel purchase I've made.

There are various types of waterproof wallets or cases that you can find. I've tried quite a few types and most leak. This is the only one I've ever had that doesn't leak and lasts a long time:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000BJ7WHE
It is just the right size to hold a couple sea passes, a couple driver's licenses, a credit card and a bunch of US currency wrapped around them. Even keeps things dry when snorkeling and diving 10 feet or more under water.

With other cases: if bills do get slightly damp then vendors still take them and they'll dry out if you spread them out a bit in your cabin overnight.

I always take my phone and leave in a beach bag if necessary. I realize that we're taking a chance on anything we leave in a beach bag but I've never had an issue. They do make similar cases, even the same brand, that fit a phone so you can take it into the water but I've never tried those.

In Europe and places where water is not involved but pick pockets are more of a concern, I carry my passport and most of my money and second credit card in a money belt type hidden pocket worn under my clothing. I carry just a few dollars and one credit card in my wallet so I don't have to go into the hidden pocket very often.

It's not $5, but it's close. I honestly wouldn't want to go any cheaper than these bags, as I don't want my shit falling apart in my main bag.

shoe covers

rain gear

basic tools in my swingarm bag

I scrape everything out into a little travel container like these GoTubbs or these [Nalgene containers] (https://www.nalgene.com/product/682012-0037/). The GoTubbs are tinier and great for at home use but the Nalgene are airtight and better for air travel.

There's the Cache Belt https://www.wazoosurvivalgear.com/cache-belt-more-than-a-money-belt/

but you've only been able to preorder it for god damn three years now, and that's held me off from ordering it. Other than that a whole bunch of rando hidden money belts on amazon where you unzip a pocket along the inside of the belt, but that's rather annoying. Its perfectly fine for if you want this as emergency money, but as a hidden wallet it doesn't work so well.

Alternatively, and what I used for my trip through europe, is this: https://www.amazon.com/Shacke-Hidden-Travel-Wallet-Blocker/dp/B00Z2AKO3G/ref=sr_1_5?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1527802723&sr=1-5&nodeID=15743861&psd=1&keywords=belt+wallet+hidden. TSA didn't care, and you can fit your wallet, passport, money, a bunch of things in there. You slide your belt through it, and then tuck it inside your waistband. Totally invisible other than that band where it attaches to your belt. Its a bit awkward to take out, but you don't have to take off your belt at least.

For me and my three-month solo trip, I would say:

  • unlocked smartphone
  • portable battery
  • packing cubes (saved me valuable space in my 44L backpack)
  • plenty of underwear and a pair of long johns
  • travel wipes in case you find a toilet that doesn't provide toilet paper -shudders-

If I did it again, I would definitely bring a selfie stick and gopro camera. And although my iPhone did everything from navigation to booking, I would also bring a kindle/tablet for those long plane and bus rides.

I have this one, and I love it. After trips across the US and to Australia I can safely call it nearly indestructible.

It's larger than most, but I tend to lose things if I'm not overly organized, and this has room for money, boarding passes, multiple passports, and extra pockets for business cards and reciepts.

There is a thin non zip pocket on the outside I use for boarding passes when going from gate to gate, but I move them into the inside when I'm done moving about because I'm paranoid.

I love it, but it's probably too large for most people - check dimensions before you bite the bullet.

Something like this?

Could you fit more than 1 large?

You can also buy hidden pouches that attach to your bra like this (not an endorsement, just an example). I haven't personally tried it but I'm curious.

An old-briefcase will have a lock built-in. I use something similar to this. I just tell everyone it was a sentimental gift from a relative or friend. This especially works if you find an old briefcase at a garage sale or something.

Or you could buy a laptop bag and a luggage lock.

I think you're going to be hard pressed to find an actual suitcase that has a built-in lock that it not pretty expensive. Luggage locks usually do the trick anyway.

If you want to be even more clandestine, look up "diversion safes" on Amazon. They are typically not very big, but they can blend in with other things you may have already.

On a personal note: Geez, whatever happened to hiding things under a mattress like when I was a kid.

I use alameda compression cubes that are very similar to the eagle creek compression cubes. So far they are great and they are cheaper.

My Eagle Creek Quick Trip is holding up very well. I've never been a fan of leather and similarly fancy dopp kits - when I inevitably spill half a bottle of shampoo in it, I like to be able to machine wash it.

Thanks for doing this!
I’m looking at locks for luggage since I do a bit of traveling. Was only going to get 2

Maybe like one of those luggage locks or something similar.

u/jwstump2 · 1 pointr/videos

so about that...I didn't use locks for ages because the case was never really out of my sight. I haven't decided on which locks to go for as the recommend wire locks leave the issue where you can open the case an inch or two while it is locked. I haven't traveled with my camera in about 8 months via flying so I haven't worried too much about buying them.

I bought a hidden pocket that I'll be using for my trip in May. I figure that as long as a ride op doesn't see me putting stuff in or out of it, I should be fine.

Eagle Creek Pack-It Quick Trip. It's a little bulky, but as you can see, I keep practically all of my loose stuff in it.

My bag is a 49L Eagle Creek Load Hauler. Yes, bigger than average for this sub. Hence the relatively bulky toiletry kit.

I use a hidden pocket wallet, similar to this when I travel.

At Amazon ($8.95, 3 colors), and at Eagle Creek ($8.95, 5 colors).

Too much rambling man. Cut it down to under 2 minutes and you may get some more views:

It's also worth mentioning that people who get their phone stolen don't actually get their phone stolen. Through dancing, walking, and taking pictures 95% of those 'stolen' phones end up in lost & found.
