> I'm allergic to pollen, so that's probably not for me, but I'll keep up the eggs and do more vitamins D and E. Doc said I was low on D3 last time my blood was tested.
This is good. For what it's worth, I'm somewhat allergic to pollen too, but as long as I don't take too much I'm fine. YMMV, I think you'll get good results with the D3, E and eggs.
>But sometimes I'm stressed/mentally exhausted, lonely, and/or too worked up to sleep. Then I just drink for the numbness.
I've found that Valerian Root capsules really help me to sleep well.
>Here are two I've used recently. Dressing for the Occasion: Your 60 Second Visual Guide, How and When to Tuck in Your Shirt. Silly things that I never really got the memo on :)
Thanks for these, I'll check them out!
>Ha ha, I didn't mean to imply I was looking for a serious girl at a bar, but rather that I'm unsure whether 'bar game' will be in any way useful.
Can't help you there, brother.
>Yes, I can say with confidence that I am a serious Christian guy despite my struggles with sin. Christ is at the forefront of my life, and everything else comes second.
Amen! I figured that based on some of the responses I've seen here from you, but it never hurts to be direct.
>For sure. I haven't yet learned how to communicate about Jesus in a way that doesn't turn people off.
>I haven't yet developed the evangelism skills to figure out how they would tie into a mission.
I've found using the Law to bring conviction of sin, before sharing the Good News, helps it make sense. Here's a few videos that capture the essence of this particular method, this is what helped me finally start sharing the Gospel in 2008:
>Although I don't enjoy it, I feel called to teach. I see potential for evangelism there.
Definitely! I've experienced the most opportunities right here on Reddit, actually :)
>I have 1 or 2 peers in whom I really see the Holy Spirit working. Besides my father obviously, I don't have anything in the way of an older man to mentor me. I hope to find this once I settle into a church.
Keep asking God for this, and He will bring the right man for the job.
>Gotta run--thank you so much for your insightful response.
You're welcome, I'm glad you found it useful.
I'm not a medical professional, but I'll help you as much as possible with what I know and my experiences. For insomnia, they'll ask you some questions and have you fill out questionnaires to eliminate sleep apnea and determine what is bothering you. It's usually extremely easy to identify the problem with the doctor (e.g., delayed sleep phase disorder, insomnia, restless leg syndrome, etc.) If it's insomnia, they'll recommend 1) melatonin (and if you've taken a high dose like 3-10 mg, they'll recommend lowering it to 300 mcg). Next, they'll recommend individual therapies for your disorder (i.e., bright light therapy for delayed sleep phase disorder, CBT-I for insomnia) and a referral to a sleep psychologist. CBT-I is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia, and you can read about it here:
https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/insomnia/in-depth/insomnia-treatment/art-20046677
Alongside a sleep psychologist, you'll keep a sleep journal, which records your wake and sleep times and possibly mood and other variables. Your sleep psychologist will tailor a cognitive therapy to you based on your issues, including, but not limited to: stimulus control therapy, sleep restriction, sleep hygiene, sleep environment improvement, relaxation training, biofeedback, etc. I went through all of this, and it wasn't very successful for me, but I hope it works for your fiancée.
Drugs work initially, however, you will quickly develop tolerance to them. Doxylamine succinate (it's what's in Unisom; an antihistamine) is available online (Amazon), and it is very effective. If you do use it (25 mg), break the pill in half. The full dose is way too strong. The drawback is that the half-life (time for your body to break down half of the drug) is very long, and you'll probably be groggy in the morning-afternoon. Over-the-counter, you could also try:
Prescription-wise, I've tried hydroxyzine (antihistamine), suvoxerant (orexin blocker), low-dose trazadone (antidepressant; off-label), and gabapentin (calcium channel blocker). I discontinued all of them either due to side effects or the develop of tolerance.
I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions!
I'm a novice too, but the idea of WBTB is that you catch your big REM cycles at the end of your night of sleep. Also, waking up in the middle of the night makes it a lot easier to slide back into a sleep state with some conscious awareness.
So the idea is that you set an alarm in the middle of the night (anywhere from 3-6 hours after you fall asleep, I've heard mixed reports here) and when it goes off, deactivate it, and then try the WILD!
Your body will be eager to go back to sleep, because it was interrupted. This will put you in a good relaxed state, and shouldn't take you 5 hours :)
Also, people on here have mixed results with supplementation, but valerian root is a natural herb that has been used for centuries to relax and fall asleep more quickly. If you're the sort of person who has a lot of thoughts while trying to fall asleep, this might suit you. Keep at it!
I feel like I should clarify. I think that talking to your Dr. about your anxiety is a great idea. There are some decent medication options that could help both your anxiety and your migraines. So it would be a good conversation to have.
My point above is that you should state that you are NOT interested in taking any benzos. But be open to other options. My rule is that I always do research on a medication before I start taking it. And I always start by googling [MedicationName Withdrawal] and see what comes up. Some Drs are all to quick to prescribe stuff without giving any thought to the fact that getting off of the medication is going to be painful.
Ok that said, here's my recommendation for some non-prescription stuff you can investigate to reduce your anxiety.
So there's some stuff you should do some research on. Some may relieve your anxiety but make your migraines worse. Some may be beneficial for both anxiety and migraines. It'll really be a trial and error to find out what works for your 'migraine brain'.
I've provided Amazon links, but you can honestly get most of these at your local Drug Store (CVS, Walgreens, etc.)
Remember always do your research, whether its a recommendation from your Dr, or some internet stranger. It's all just data points. Digest it, research it, and then make your own decision on what's right for your situation. I wish you the best!!
honestly; and ill probably get shit for it; but the Walmart by me has some valerian root extract (also sold on amazon with good ratings) thats 500mg of 4:1 extract and then like 100 of normal root too and I have to eat like 2 servings worth but that plus kava and melatonin puts me out like a light and gets me quality sleep despite a Kratom dependence that can mess my sleep quality up.
edit: as for species idk the wikipedia page may mention something.
I have this brand but this version on amazon has a serving of 3 caps vs 2 of the one I have from the same company, id recommend trying your local Walmart for the version with 2 caps as a serving because the 3 caps servings just have a bunch of rice flour filler for some reason.

I've taken melatonin. I took 5mg and it did help me sleep. But it also gave me very, very, very vivid dreams. Sometimes very disturbing dreams? So there's a trade off.
There's also these Neuro Sleep drinks. They're based on melatonin and have some other ingredients as well. I haven't had them very often, because they're a little expensive at $2 a bottle... I don't remember having particularly vivid dreams afterwards though.
I've also heard about LUNA sleep aid pills. It looks like the same ingredients as what would be in a tea, though. There are some reviews from people with PTSD who say it helped them.
Honestly! I'm gonna say, getting to sleep isn't my problem. My problem is sleeping too much! So I'm probably not the best person to give advice about this at all...
Source Naturals Serene Science Theanine Serene with Relora
Gaia Tumeric Supreme
*Valerian Root Extract
Also you might want to try another strain. That source naturals stuff is stronger than the benzos I am prescribed.
The only thing that has ever worked consistently and without building up a tolerance is Seroquel. Xanax works great but leaves me lethargic, and I'll keep having to increase the dose. I went off the Seroquel last year because I couldn't stand the side effects, but I miss consistently getting 8 hours per night.
Now that I'm off the Seroquel, I have to cycle through various options because none of them work well for more than a few days at a time. 10mg melatonin tabs work the best, a medical marijuana tincture is also helpful, and I still sometimes go for the Xanax when I'm struggling with bad anxiety. If I take something that doesn't work, I have magnesium and valerian supplements that will help. They're rarely enough on their own, though.
oh wow.
that is so so so interesting and helpful. you even provide the quotes.
the overdosage is exactly what i have run into.
i have 10mg pills.
even the pills i was looking at were over dosage at 3mg:
so i might go with the non-melatonin pills:
then i can get my own low dosage 0.3 mg melatonin.
Have you tried meditation? It may sound lame, but it has helped me when my brain refuses to quiet. I take a bath with only enough water to cover up to my temples, and focus on the lack of stimuli.
Alternatively, try engaging in something you haven't enjoyed since you were little, no matter how goofy it is. Making pictures out of crayons and stickers, going for a walk down a street you've never been, whittling pieces of wood from the sea shore, dancing to 90s pop music, or 80s pop music... We forget, as busy adults, that we can like things just because they make us happy, rather than because they serve a predetermined purpose.
As for tea, chamomile is a good choice; but have you tried valerian? My personal favorite is half peppermint, half catmint... I use this when I'm too tense and anxious to try anything else: http://www.amazon.com/Herbs-Kids-Valerian-Super-Ounce/dp/B00024CMCS
I take these, works pretty well, and you wake up feeling refreashed.
Here's the one that I bought.
https://www.amazon.com/Naturally-Ingredients-Non-Habit-Supplement-Melatonin/dp/B00JCO3ALG/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8
Or just regular melatonin is good enough
Thank you. Is this what you are recommending?
http://www.amazon.com/New-Age-Valerian-Root-Cut/dp/B000WSBZA4/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1301213860&sr=8-4
Not a vet and I don't usually have any trouble sleeping, just want to chime in. If I have to get up at like 4AM to travel for work or something, I take these magic things. Pop 2 and like 8 PM the night before and they knock me the fuck out. I am always so surprised how quickly they work. Having a dad who heavily relies on sleeping and anxiety scripts makes me never want to get dependent on something like that. Ever.

I have no brand allegiance, those are just what i bought. Probably anything with the ingredients would work great. Ingredients - Melatonin, GABA & Valerian Root extract.
Sleep is incredibly important in recovery. An old sponsor was a firefighter and I used to work shift work, so we'd frequently talk about sleep deprivation and how that plays out in recovery. Sleep deprivation can directly lead to relapse, so it's of paramount importance to get regular and sufficient sleep.
Back around 2000, I was working straight graveyards and found myself unable to sleep. I was in my local health food store and spoke with the owner about my problem. She asked me, 'Was I having trouble getting to sleep or staying asleep ?' I told her both. So I left with some Melatonin and some Valerian Root. Melatonin is, I believe, a naturally occurring hormone produced by the pineal gland, and it helps me to get to sleep. The Valerian Root—which helps me stay asleep—I would take, usually on weekends, so that I could get some extra sleep.
There's a lot of shitty Melatonin and Valerian Root suplements out there. I have a brand that's sub-lingual, meaning it's absorbed under the tongue, and it works fantastically. Here are links to the preferred products off of Amazon, although you'll likely be able to find them in one of your local health food stores—even Whole Foods for that matter.
Melatonin - I prefer this brand 'Source Naturals' and I usually get the 2.5mg dosage, which comes in either peppermint or orange flavor.
Valerian Root - from 'Eclectic Institute' also contains Passion Flower.
Typically, I would pop a Melatonin under my tongue every night and only on weekends would I do both Melatonin and the Valerian Root/Passion Flower cocktail. What's funny is I don't think I've touched a Melatonin in more than a few years. Folks in recovery are going to have a lot of opinions about this stuff, but this is really between you and your sponsor and god. I had a period some years ago, coming off of graveyards, whereby my body would only let me sleep for two hours (nap time !) and then I was up, waiting for my next shift. Between the anxiety and the exhaustion, I was ready to crack—and this is a very dangerous place for the recoverying addict to be in. Anyhow, I ended up getting some Ambien from my doctor, and it worked. It allowed me to get the sleep I so desperately needed and also to find a routine and rhythm that wouldn't result in relapse or suicide or both. So once I no longer needed the Ambien, I stopped taking it; it had served its purpose beautifully.
Good luck and PM me if you wanna chat about any of this.
lol no, never had the sweaty butt phenomenon you’re mentioning. hehe, did you check if it was a valerian root only compound you’ve had? sometimes they mix a bunch of stuff like valerian, gaba and plant extracts like passion flower into one pill.
here in german supermarkets, valerian root extract pressed into pills is available. Idk how it’s available where you live, but if you search at amazon or ebay for “valerian root extract” you will find tons of products. Just look out that there is no other stuff mixed in there, then you can take as many of them as you want. There is no overdosing. Some people just need to take way more of valerian root to feel an effect.
Either you’ve reacted to some other compound or your body processes valerian just that way. ^^ everyone ticks differently.
Or maybe I just can’t smell my own valerian stink. hmm.
EDIT: Something like this looks okay amazon-link
Luna
Actually I meant MG, why? Example
This is something you should stay stocked up on.
STOCK MY HOUSE
Valerian Root. Take 5 of them (for the 450 mg) and you'll be crawling in bed within 30 minutes.
Edit - link to Amazon but you can find them at CVS for cheap
I take this at about 11:15. When I first started using it, I also took an additional 3mg of Melatonin (just a generic brand I picked up from the pharmacy) to get myself in the habit of falling asleep at that time.
No problem! Sorry you can’t pick up your strain in your state 😔 are you taking anything herbal? I take Valerian root pills
NOW Valerian Root 500 mg,250 Capsules https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0019LTHXA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_3Ph8BbBX33SVC
I take two a half an hour before bedtime and it knocks me out, it also helps with back pain as well. It’s all herbal and has been used for centuries. Helps me a ton
