š Reddit experts on vitamin b supplements
The comments and opinions expressed on this page are written exclusively by redditors. To provide you with the most relevant data, we sourced opinions from the most knowledgeable Reddit users based the total number of upvotes and downvotes received across comments on subreddits where vitamin b supplements are discussed. For your reference and for the sake of transparency, here are the specialists whose opinions mattered the most in our ranking.
A B12 and vitamin D3 supplemented whole foods plant based diet is the healthiest diet for humans. We aren't suppose to consume dietary cholesterol, as it raises our LDL cholesterol levels and puts us at risk for atherosclerosis. Only herbivorous animals can develop atherosclerosis.
Whole-foods tend to be much more nutrient dense and have fiber and antioxidants (incredibly important nutrients for your intestinal and arterial health) whereas no animal products do. You can get every single nutrient you need from a vegan diet.
Main things you should be concerned with:
As for supplements:
If you have anymore questions let me know, happy to answer anything you're curious about. A vegan diet is good for any stage of life, for any form of athleticism, and isn't hard to gain/lose weight with.
Doctor's Best multivitamin
It has the best form of everything (no synthetics) at a reasonable price, but you might need to limit methyl b12's depending on your VDR taq status. Check this out for more: http://methyl-nation.com/comt-vdr-taq-the-mutation-series/.
Taking one of these multis a day (says to take 3) hasn't given me any overmethylating symptoms so far. Each capsule has way more of everything compared to your average multi, so 1 should be good to shore up an otherwise healthy diet avoiding folic acid wherever you can.
Here's another idea I've been toying with and might try myself, in case you can't tolerate any methyl b12: make your own "multi" stack with minerals and a b complex, adding L-methylfolate (only need half of these) and hydroxy/adenenosyl b12 seperately if you want those. This leaves A/C/D/E/K which I believe can be pretty much covered in a healthy diet and supplemented cheaply (D+C). If you have GSTP1 mutation, you should be avoiding supplemental E.
That B complex has the best forms of the other B's and leaves out Folic Acid and B12 for us. There's another, cheaper brand on amazon without Folic Acid but it has cyano b12. I'm not sure why cyano b12 is so bad to be honest - everything I read on the net about it is kind of vague/woo-woo, but I'm erring on the side of caution anyway (at a cost to the wallet!). Perhaps you can enlighten me?
Hope this was helpful, good luck.
edit: found this on knowyourgenetics.com
>Cyano B12 contains a cyanide molecule. So when you take cyano B12 your body must first turn
it into hydroxy B12 in order to use it, and then must find a way to get rid of the toxic cyanide
molecule. We all know cyanide is a poison even if the rest of the B12 molecule is good for you.
The body actually uses hydroxy B12 in order to detoxify cyanide. So, not only is cyano B12 not
the form your body ultimately needs, but taking higher doses of cyano B12 may actually deplete
your hydroxy B12. So why would anyone use cyano B12 if it can be toxic? Well, in low doses it
may be helpful for the eyes, but for the most part cyano B12 is used because it is much less
expensive, and a form of B12 that is easier to keep stable.
Alright so honestly it sounds like as long as you get hydroxy, a little bit of cyano isn't a big deal (cyanide fears are majorly overblown reportedly). With that said I'm going to probably go with this B complex that's a much better value & low in cyano b12.
Ok, here are a few recommendations.
Disclaimer - you can spend a lot of money on supplements that may or may not work for you. I have done this, but I do not care, because every penny I have spent trying supplements was like one day's worth of dope to me. Your mileage may vary.

Other supplements recommended by a friend I trust:
For the cold/hot flashes.. sweats and gooseflesh, find some Black Cohosh. It may be sold as an OTC menopause medication ... it's not just for women!! Black cohosh has been found to bind to the mu opiate receptors... but not enough to get you high as it's a partial agonist. It binds just enough to regulate your body's "climate control"
For anxiety and stress you could try Kava Kava. This is sold as a tea (Yogi Stress Relief) or a tincture. Either works.. the tea tastes better and the tincture works faster and better in my opinion.
Another great supplement to take would be L-theanine. L-Theanine reduces glutamate, which is the main excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain. This blocking of glutemate and the increase of GABA, helps to ease the anxiety and stress response. L-Theanine also increases the amount of dopamine and serotonin in the brain. There are many studies you can read which support the use of L-theanine as a sleep/stress relief aid. You can find it in any store in the vitamin area... or.. you could drink several cups of black tea.
Lastly, if you can afford it and want to go straight for what may be the real deal, check out:

I just posted about BPC 157 and am probably going to try in myself.
There are many others, but these may be good starting points.
13dpo. Despite a cute little temp rise, it's looking to be CD1 of cycle 8 today or tomorrow (hard to tell with light periods, but definitely am bleeding). ETA: nvm, def CD1. With it goes my chance to share a BFP for our anniversary tomorrow, and my last chance to be pregnant before I turn 29 this month. I'm doing okay. :) The TL;dr is that switching to a ketogenic diet, drinking rasberry leaf tea, and evening primrose oil seem to have made a difference. Starting tomorrow I'm adding myo inositol to the mix because I've been doing a lot of reading on it and it seems like if a person has PCOS/insulin resistance it's a wonder supplement (While results vary somewhat, many studies are finding it to be as or more effective than Metformin for ovulation, weight loss, reduction of hirsutism/acne, etc.) and if they don't have those issues, there are virtually no harmful side effects and it may helpwith mood and sleep.
Benefits of the changes from cycle 7: EWCM during ovulation for the first time, reduced acne and weight gain throughout cycle, still had spotting and some ewcm during the luteal phase but it was significantly less than usual, cycle was slightly longer than average, luteal phase was pushed to a solid 12 days.
Feeling weak during menstruation could be a sign of iron deficiency, so make sure you are getting plenty of iron-rich foods in your diet, and try to combo that with vitamin C rich foods as well, since vitamin C enhances iron absorption. Without going to a doctor to get official bloodwork, usually blood donation centers will test your iron levels when you go to give blood. So that takes a few hours of your time but is a free option.
Unfortunately supplements aren't regulated like pharmaceuticals are, so the quality level can vary wildly. I personally stick with name brands that I know well and feel that I can trust.
Here are Labdoor's rankings. I like their top value choice, the Twinlab B12 Dots. They have a mild taste, dissolve pretty quick in the mouth, and are super cheap (5 cents a day).
This is becoming a regular gish gallop of folks moving from one point to the next.
B12 is actually present in animal products like milk, so vegetarians are still in the clear.
As for vegans, they get their B12 the same way you likely get your iodine and flouride, through fortification. In this case of common cereals, milk substitutes and foods like nutritional yeast.
If someone doesn't want to go through the relative work of consuming a B12 fortified food a couple times a day, a single pill once a week provides more than enough synthetically derived B12 at a cost of ~$2.60 a year. This perfectly safe and water soluble vitamin is already a supplement that is recommended to the general population after age 60, as a significant portion of the population doesn't recycle B12 as efficiently in their digestive tract when they get older.
If it wasn't abundantly clear from start to finish, I thought it was clear I was just trolling for trolling's sake.
I know your kid is fine and I obviously don't want them to be harmed in any way. My daughter hit me with a toy hammer yesterday and I reprimanded her with instructions not to hit people (except your kids... jk).
My original response was going to be "if I weren't so lazy, I'd research which of the old gods were real and sacrifice a goat to them so your kid gets cancer. But that's hard af." So I actually toned it down a bit.
I was just overreacting for the sake of humor and hyperbole and you seemed to be taking the bait rather hard (though you could just be counter-trolling me, which is also amusing).
Which supplement are you using for B12? I take these sublingual methylcobalamin. And I give my daughter these because she likes em (I couldn't find good research on methylcobalamin vs cyanocobalamin in children, but with the eggs and milk in her diet I wasn't as concerned with B12 absorption from the supplements, and it isn't one of those 13,333% type deals).
I still think it's unreasonable to expect everyone to be able to raise vegan kids and I don't recommend it for most humans. Americans don't have any real excuses if they want to do it, but it's still hard in that it takes research and monitoring and full support from both parents. Most people can barely raise their kids not to be assholes, so expecting them to have the patience, knowledge, and persistence to properly feed their kids is 'hard'. Mine really just boils down to being in a mixed-diet house and a little over-cautiousness. And for others, I don't recommend it because it's more difficult than the typical lazy parenting we see in America. If someone's been vegan for 5+ years and hasn't had any issues with health and has a good support structure and has both parents/families on board and has done their research and can afford it (both financially and emotionally), then I say go for it. Those things aren't exactly "easy af".
Anyway, sorry if you were really upset, I thought it was pretty clear I was messing with you. Have a great weekend and I hope everyone you love gets anti-rickets.
I'm grateful for the shared knowledge! Aaaand now I want to throw my B-complex into the trash!
>Sublingual methylcobalamin is supposed to be better.
The person in the article said sublingual doesn't work, because B12 is "a very lage molecule", and only small molecules pass sublingualy, but that sublingual ends up working because it gets swallowed. So, would sublingual still be better than a Methylcobalamin version like this?
If topical is even better, does this product look good? What's DMSO? I couldn't tell if it was included or would need to be purchased separately.
B and D vitamins are ones that I've read can most affect brain fog. I've been taking Vitamin D for a couple years, enough so that my levels went from 10 (out of a minimum 100) to normal and was able to cut my dose back from 5,000 units to a 2,500 unit pill.
I've never tested officially low for B vitamins, but my first (good) doctor suspected a MTHFR gene mutation, which affects B vitamin absorption. I've been on a special folate for that for years, and added in B1 and B2 about 6 months ago which helped some. However, just this week I stumbled across a different B Multivitamin which is specially formulated for the MTHFR mutation, and includes folate along with the B vitamins. I've only been taking it for 3 days, but it seems to be helping as I've had noticeably more energy and have been sleeping better the past couple of days despite some seriously increased stress levels.
As another poster noted, magnesium is also helpful, in fact in addition to helping with muscle aches and sleep it can assist with Vitamin D absorption. I take magnesium citrate which is the most common form.
I'm pretty sure this doesn't count as source talk, so here's a link to the stuff I use. Good price, pills aren't too massive.
Anything from 1.5g to 2g a day should be good. People will tell you to split them up to minimize flush, but ignore those nerds. Just take it all at once (along with the aspirin). The first few days you may get a super, super mild flush, but then it'll be gone. Wait like a month before stopping the aspirin, then try a dose without it and see how the flush goes.
Here's a vegan DHA-EPA Omega-3 supplement: https://www.amazon.com/Deva-Nutrition-DHA-EPA-Delayed-Release/dp/B005R5CARY
You may also want Kelp for iodine: https://www.amazon.com/Natures-Way-Kelp-600mg-VCaps/dp/B00024D1ZA and I know you are already getting your B-12, but for everyone else, I recommend taking as a liquid sublingually https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015YDVT48
Beyond that just make sure you get your leafy greens (kale, collards, spinach, broccoli, etc) for calcium and iron and you should be pretty good to go.
haha um actually after reading some of the rules it says it's a "grey area" It seems they basically don't want you spamming a certain company or being affiliated with them.
I too have mthfr gene mutation which is how I found out about supplements that support methylation.
I use methyl-life
I just find it to be the most reasonable and you can take it sublingually, which I like because then it goes straight to the bloodstream.
Yay for a new lappy!
Have you tried this, my friend swears by it. My hubby is going to try it this week to see what he thinks. =)
omega-3 = raw flax seeds or oil.

That is all. Enjoy feeling better with the same or increased gains.
Yeah, I know how they work LoL. That's why I was asking you if you got it sorted since you mentioned you weren't taking Hydroxy yet with comt mutations. Hydroxy is easily available online, and I get mine from Amazon. I buy Seeking Health's brand. The same people who make that chart. If adeno works for you that's great, but you should try Hydroxo as it works a lot better for most people.

Honestly, I just searched 'B12 supplement' on Amazon. This is an example, but there were many more.
I also checked good ol' Wikipedia and found this article, which mentions the production of a synthetic form of B12 using bacterial fermentation.
I'll admit I'm not an expert (I most know stuff through my sister who is Vegan), but it does appear that there are non-animal sources of B12.
It basically just a type of vitamin B. It's not fat soluble and so the consensus is that their are virtually no side effects. A side effect I've noticed is drier skin, but that's good. It means it's working and doing what it's supposed to do, reduce oil production. Some note reduced hair growth or hair loss but this is rare and I haven't experienced this whatsoever. It's sad that it took my so long to find this. There's not much info on it but it's what ended up working for me. This is the type I buy. Hope that helps!

Some fun facts: B12 prevents hangovers, plus it makes tonic water glow. :) I used this sublingual one for our wedding drinks dance party. I'm not sure how well a child would absorb it though, as they suggest keeping it under your tongue for 30 seconds, which is hard to do even as an adult, as you tend to want to swallow.

I have just found Doctor's Best products to be of good quality, so I went with what I know more or less. It certainly does give a nice little energy boost. It's subtle, but it's there.
So is "sustained release" the same as flush free? This is the one I purchased from Amazon last go around and I'm wondering if it's worthwhile or not.

Someone on here found a lot of help with this supplement: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MQJVHHC/ it may or may not work for your gf but certainly worth a try!
At first I received intravenous infusions but now I just take liquid iron and B12 Supplements and they work fine. The liquid version absorbs easier. Also, once your guts start to heal you will be able to absorb more nutrients again. Here is what I currently take. Links.

I always buy this from Amazon, it's way cheaper there.
My doctor said that less than 1000mg wonāt do anything. But, Iām not a doctor, so, if I were you, I would find a new doctor if possible. If not, there are definitely ways to manage pcos without Metformin or BC. Here is some info worth reading. (On pcos supplements and inositol) hope it helps.

> I also can only tolerate methyl b12 in very low doses.
I have an order of this coming in tomorrow: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MQJVHHC/
Do you think it would be best to try it and see how I feel? After ordering it, I learned that some people are either over-methylating or under-methylating. My concern is the 1000mcg of Folate. I'm almost wondering if I should have had more tested before ordering the supplement. Like finding out where my B-vitamin levels are as well as methylation efficiency.
With that said, I couldn't find any alarming reviews of the product of anyone who had bad reactions.
*I realize you had DNA testing which is how you know about these in the first place. Sorry my bad.
Here is what I take. I take two of these in the morning. An injection is much more effective and lasts a week or two, but this is an alternative.

You can sometimes get b vitamin supplements that are just specific B vitamins. Like I have one that's just b12 that I take.
I also found this one that appears to not have folic acid in it. Unless I overlooked it.
ETA: I think people mostly take the B supplements for B6. So you should probably take B6 individually.
Yes, I got it on Amazon. Here is the link. I couldn't find it in any stores though.
Try supplementing inositol--It is very effective at treating the symptoms of PCOS. At least 14 studies have shown it to work, as you can read about here.

You want a good B complex. I take this methyl folate with B vitamins. It's especially good if you have the MTHFR gene mutation, but I think anything with the range of B vitamins would work.

it can just don't overdo it. start with 400mcg methylfolate or less and don't go over 800mcg a day.
this is a really good b complex that isn't too excessive: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CFD0TC4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And most plant-based milk is fortified with B12.

Finally diagnosed around 2 years ago (I'm 28). I went on Yaz and started taking 1000 mgs of inositol around 8 months ago. I did cut back on alcohol in this time, but I've lost 35 pounds now. My eating and exercise habits didn't change. Link below to the inositol I use
ETA all of this to say, I eat a varied diet, fairly clean during the week and not so clean on the weekend. I eat plenty of carbs.

The "normal" version of niacin (sold as just "niacin") causes a flush. If it's flush-free, it's usually in the form of niacinamide. Check the ingredient label. This, for example, is a "normal" flush-inducing version.

Mine costs $8 for a 1 year supply...
gotta load up on your vitaminssss.
The whole weekend I had Emergen-C, Genius Joy , and whole food multivitamin
I take this one, its not flush free, so it still works on lipids, but since it is sustained release instead of hitting you all at once, the flush is minimized. I don't even really feel it taking 2g a day.

Let me know if those links don't work. Mobile is hard.
I have the MTHFR mutation (homozygous C677T), which is my root cause of B12 and Folate deficiencies. I also have Homocysturnia which causes B6 deficienciency. It's been instrumental in helping my pain.
Heads up: If, after supplementing, you feel anxious, take no-Flush Niacin. It works like a sponge to absorb all the junk that the body is dumping. The anxiety wears off, though it's an added reason to start slow.
I take this supplement once daily, as it has the right dose for all of my deficiencies.

I've been using liquid b-12 for several years and cannot praise it enough. Just put a dose under your tongue in the morning for 30 seconds then chug a glass or two of water.

Possibly. There's been studies of mitigating depression caused by MTHFR with b vitamins. Patients started at a high dosage were afflicted with anxiety. They were given lower dosages and eventually weaned off SSRIs.
I myself get B12 shots that are already in its active form. So it couldn't hurt to take the kind that you're already familiar with that doesn't give you anxiety. If you take regular Folate with MTHFR you still can't process it because you can't make the enzymes to break it down. You need Methylated Folate. Something like this:
