In your situation, as much as you prefer uprights, I would buy a canister. Why? Because you are a apartment dweller, & you have both hard floors & carpets to clean. Uprights can do both, but not as good as a canister with a horsehair hard floor brush. A canister would also be better for a apartment dweller because you can get under low spaces like beds & coffee tables easier, get into tight spaces, & if you move into a apartment later that has all hardwood floors & area rugs & small scatter rugs, you can still use your canister - but an upright? Nope. Most won't do small scatter rugs as well, & don't pick up as well on hard floors as a canister does. Also, if you plan on using the hose a lot with the attachments for furniture or above floor cleaning, the hoses on canister vacuums are MUCH BETTER & nicer to work with than the stretch hoses on upright vacuums.

In your price range, you could look into getting a used or refurbished Aerus Electrolux or TriStar CXL canister from a local vac shop or Ebay. They are both quality brands, bags & supplies are reasonably priced, & they have decent cleaning performance & reliability. You could also look into a used Miele canister with the SEB228 or SEB236 as well, especially if dust emissions is a concern. You can get generic HEPA filters & generic bags for them at reasonable prices, & although some people here & vac shops don't recommend using generic bags in them, I have not had a issue with the generic bags as long as you use them with care. If you insist it must be new, though, there are a couple other options. The Riccar Prima canister can be found for slightly out of your price range, & is a high quality bagged powerhead canister with HEPA filter & metal brushroll. If you look at uprights, make sure it has some way of shutting the brushroll off, whether it be by pushing a pedal that shifts the belt & the brushroll stops turning or a switch that shuts off a brushroll motor in the powerhead. The bagged Hoover Windtunnel suggested below would be a good pick. Anything from the T Series line would be a good choice. If you prefer, they also make bagless models. The Miele Dynamic U1 uprights I would not recommend. Miele's canisters are good, but their uprights are heavy & bulky, poorly designed & they have had several issues with them in the past, particularly with the quality of the onboard stretch hose. Bad enough that The Wirecutter dropped the Miele uprights from their list of recommended models. From Sebo's lineup, I would only recommend the Sebo Felix upright for your situation. Their uprights are reliable & well made, but also big & bulky. The Felix, however, has a brush on/off switch, swivel steering, the ability to convert to a handheld canister (albeit a bulky one), & the powerhead can be swapped for a hard floor brush to turn it into a full-sized upright stick vacuum. For a apartment dweller, that would be ideal in your situation, since you presently have 1/2 hard floor / 1/2 carpet, plus if you move to a place with all hard floors & area rugs & small scatter rugs, this is one upright you can still get use out of in that environment. The Fuller Brush recommendation is also good too, & like the others they have a HEPA Cloth bag & HEPA filter, but they are made in China. In your price range, for slightly more money, I would go to a vac shop & look at the Riccar Vibrance/Simplicity Symmetry uprights. Those are American made instead & slightly higher quality. For the price they want for that Fuller Brush upright, you could get a Panasonic upright from Amazon, with similar features, for 1/2 the price, with comparable quality. I would also take a look at the Cirrus uprights, they are another high quality upright comparable to Riccar/Simplicity & with similar features.

If you go for the Hoover Windtunnel or Fuller Brush, Riccar/Simplicity, Cirrus or Panasonic uprights, there is a hose kit available for them that gives you a super long hose, wands, crevice/dusting/upholstery tools & floor brush that you might also like to use as well for hard floors, as well as for above floor cleaning if you don't like a upright's stretch hose. As for cleaning pet hair, if you are talking about cleaning it off furniture, whatever you do don't get one of those turbo brushes! Yes, they do remove & clean the pet hair off the furniture, but the hair wraps around the brushroll & you spend just as much time cutting the pet hair off as you do vacuuming. What I have found really works well is if you buy a upholstery tool with red felt velour strips. These 2 upholstery tools from Shark & Miele are just examples, there are plenty you can find & choose from. Bissell & Hoover have also made pet hair tools in the past that have rubber blades & bristles that work well too. Also note that if you find a attachment that isn't 1 1/4"/32mm, & you want to use it with a vacuum that does use 32mm attachments, you can find all sorts of adapters to make tools fit different vacuums.

Everyone keeps talking about the Miele, and you think it's BS. Then you buy one, and you never look back.

I have really terrible allergies to cats. I try to avoid them, but everyone I live with owns cats. It's terrible. Every time I would vacuum, I would get literally ill from all the dander and dust microparticles being blown back up in the air. The air was cleaner when I didn't vacuum. To be fair, I did have a bagless.

The place I'm currently in is predominantly hardwood floors, with rug runners and the bedrooms all have medium pile carpet. There are also three levels on this place. There are two long-haired cats. And let me tell you, this Miele Topaz changed my life.

Air quality is important to me, so I went with the S6 series instead of the S2 series. The S2 series still has great air quality control, but the S6 and S8 series are CLOSED vacuum systems. All air goes through the bag (which is a filter) and a secondary exhaust filter. They have arguably the best air filtration system on the market.

Since you have mostly rugs, you technically don't need the electric powerhead. This means you can get a cheaper vacuum. However, I really do recommend getting an electric powerhead now, in case you ever do decide to get carpets. The Miele's have a 7 year warranty on the motor and shell, and are tested to last 20 years so you'll have this vacuum for a while. And while you can always upgrade the powerhead, these vacuums either come with the powerhead attachment or you they don't. You can't get an electric powerhead if you buy a vacuum that's not built to handle it.

So which vacuum? Well, if air quality isn't supremely important you could go with an S2000 series. However, if you're like me, you might want an S6 or S8 series. The S6 series is similar to the S8 but they are compact. So this is great for a place with a ton of stairs, but the bag will fill up quicker. The attachments are also stored on the outside of the machine instead of internal compartments. Personally, I haven't had an issue with the bags filling up too quick but some people want a larger size. I got the Topaz model, and it runs you about $750.00.

If you want a bigger vacuum the S2 and S8 series are the same size. I only did serious research into the S8 series. The Miele Cat and Dog model is neat because it comes with an upholstery brush that is wicked for removing pet hair. The Kona and Marin are also awesome choices.

The power on these cleaners is absolutely mind-blowing. I actually took a photo the other day where the cats had a fight on the carpet, and there was cat hair literally covering the thing. Within just one run of my vacuum, it picked up everything. I am constantly amazed by how much more my vacuum picks up than the older models. And it's QUIET. You can carry on a normal conversation when the thing is running.

The Topaz comes with a Parquet floor cleaner - the bristles are super super soft and excellent for hardwood floors. Make sure your vacuum either comes with that head or you purchase one. And don't worry about whether the cleaner comes with a HEPA filter - you can always upgrade that later. It's not worth buying the more expensive vacuum solely for that feature. Definitely try to find a dealer around you - they'll often give you free bags with a vacuum purchase.

Finally, buy a good vacuum. My condo has only tile/vinyl/hardwood floors.

Thanks to /u/touchmyfuckingcoffee, I bought a Eureka Mighty Mite. The vacuum is amazing. I'm able to vacuum my whole condo properly in 20 mins now.

Buy a good steam mop. The Shark Steam Mop is a good model. You can get them for ~ $50. I steam my tile/hardwood surfaces once a week and steam my walls once every few months.

If you have pets, comb them every day with a steel comb. I have a Furminator. This cuts down shedding everywhere to nothing.

Finally, buy a good HEPA airfilter. The Honeywell 50250 is a good model. My condo gets dusty easily, and then I have to dust everywhere. It sucks. The airfilter gets rid of this for me.

Oh, and buy a slowcooker and prepare frozen meals (breakfast burritos, etc). You will save a lot of money.

Most of our gifts were replacements or upgrades of things we already owned. A really cheap and awesome gift we got was this stainless steel scraper, which makes it so much easier to transfer food from a cutting board to a pot/pan. We also got a matching set of this luggage belt with a TSA lock--I actually gifted one to my husband years ago, but we used this as an opportunity to replace his now worn-down belt. We also replaced our kitchen scale with this Amazon Basics one, which works really well. Another Amazon Basics item we received was this paper shredder, which is a kickass workhorse of a machine.
One of the first gifts we got was a Corelle dish set that I LOVE--it's so much lighter and more durable than the stoneware set we were using. We also replaced our silverware set with an Oneida set that we both picked out, which was a very sweet and meaningful experience. We already have a nice Oneida silverware set, but it belonged to my husband's late mother, and he wanted to retire it so it wouldn't take any more wear & tear.
Those are all gifts that were my hands-down favorite things we received. We were also able to buy two expensive items off our registry thanks to Amazon's completion discount. We purchased a Sonos soundbar and a Miele vacuum that were absolutely worth every penny we spent on them!

I know you said she has a good vacuum, but one year I bought my parents a roomba for pet hair. I also bought them an eye vac because they sweep their kitchen so frequently and I thought it might save them from having to bend over so often.

You could buy ornaments with their names on them or pictures if she doesn’t already have them. You could also consider having pet portraits made by an Etsy artist or from r/artstore & r/hungryartists .

I’ve purchased catnip bubbles after seeing many internet cats enjoying them. However, my old tortie was NOT impressed. She prefers an actual plant that she can murder. You could grab a few plants. Heated cat houses are also a thing.

C2 Electro + good idea for uncertain future, check. I watched the video here, I gotta say it seems nice to be able to flick a switch to turn off the roller and switch to hard surfaces. The rugs come with and stay with the unit, so I have a weird need to go from surface to surface or sort of dart and squeeze...

C1 line isn't sealed (HEPA? Filtration?). What I'm hearing is "when the filtration of your bag fails, you will have nothing left in that department and your machine will spew out the particulates it's meant to capture, rather than kicking them around the inside for a bit longer until you change the bag like a decent human person".

The C1 is only $300 on Amazon ($350 for the Limited which I'm guessing has the extra attachments, which I'd spring for). Should I just make out like a bandit? At half the price, I don't think I'd mind buying another vacuum after I settle down more (geographically). What am I "missing out on" from the C2 Electro +? Just the seal? And the remedy is to be mindful of the bags?

The C2 can be had at nearly the same low price (hard wood version), but it doesn't say "electro +" which, I gather from my exhaustive and somewhat confusing delve into the vacuum world refers to the electrobrush, essential for getting dirt out of carpets with a cannister vacuum. I don't mind driving 80 minutes one way to buy a vacuum. I mind driving 80 minutes one way to evaluate vacuums and pulling the trigger under pressure and leaving confused and regretful. I was looking forward to driving To The City to look at higher quality vacuums but as I was getting navigation I noticed they're permanently closed. C3 is bigger. Okay, I'm a giant 6'4" young man, and not worried about hauling around a little extra. You lost me at door vs pig tail and I really did search for images and pig tails and I can only guess you're referring to the power cord. I guess the C3 goes to the base and not the electrobrush attachment? Something like that?

All in all, I absolutely recognize and accept that I'm going to get what I pay for. I believe there will be drawbacks and removed attachments that make the $300-$350 range vacuums deal breakers. My sister loves her Dyson and I don't mean to dissuade her (and in fact I've used it and thought it was just fine, it's a higher tier model for pets and does the job in their small single story house). I could get a Dyson, but I feel like I would regret not getting a decent vacuum for the same reason you want a decent bed. It's not the most glamorous piece of your house, but dang if a good one doesn't pay dividends for your health and well-being and happiness. With that in mind, it sounds like a C-series is right for me. The C1 sounds like it's more of a cost savings and physically lighter model. The C2 sounds more like an all-rounder, and the C1 is King Kong Big Boy, same power and price point just bigger. Am I anywhere near the mark?

Here is a good canister that would suit your needs. Its a little over budget but totally worth it. This will do both your barefloors and carpeting. It is a bagged vacuum that will do very well with your pet hair. By the way, no matter how many bags you go through it will still be cheaper than maintance on a bagless vacuum. Bagless vacuums usually have 2 filters in them that you have to replace that each cost much more than a couple packs of bags will. This vacuum is the most reliable vacuum I know. The only problem is that its only for barefloors and indoor/outdoor carpeting. It has so much suction that will just stick to your regular depth carpting. At this price you could easily pick up another vacuum just to clean your area rug. *The Hoover Windtunnel Self-Propelled vacuum you linked is a good choice also. It will do your bare floors and your carpeting. However, I need to warn you that it is as heavy as a kirby. So if you have back problems or are going up and down steps a lot its not the vacuum for you.

I just bought a Eureka AirExcel 990A canister vac. It's relatively inexpensive (currently $79), bagless, not too loud, has HEPA filtration, seems relatively powerful, has a retractable cord, and is plenty light and portable.

From what I can tell, you have to spend quite a bit more to get a cordless with any decent battery performance and lifecycle. At this price-point I'd rather have plug-in power, and not worry about replacing batteries someday.

The Eureka is mostly for when I don't want to bring out the trusty Dyson DC07, which (while excellent in most ways) is heavier, much louder, and can't get into quite as many spaces.

The Eureka feels a bit less indestructible than the Dyson; but it should last a while if you're good to it (wash out the various filters regularly, don't bang it around too much, &c.) It even looks halfway decent.

So far, I'm very pleased with it. Good luck with your search...

If you're looking at the S7210 twist you may also want to consider the S6 series. I really like the fact that the S6 comes with softer brushes than the S2 and the body is sealed (a big win where my wife has allergies).

I'd shop around your local dealers, we found one selling a special package which included the S6, combination floor tool (good enough for the one carpet we have) and the parquet twister. The parquet twister is phenomenal if you have hardwood or tile, it makes cleaning incredibly easy. They also have warranty upgrades from time to time and we got a free upgrade to the 10 year. Total cost was $350 CAD.

Dreiter - If you're looking at models, our is the US S6270 Quartz painted black, plus the parquet tool (normally $60-$70).

We tend to like bagged canister vacs. For what it's worth, a canister vac keeps its weight on the ground and just drags behind you. It's about the same weight if you have to carry it up stairs, but it's in two parts so it's way easier to carry.

Check this guy out.

It's got both a powered carpet head and a hardwood floor head included. It's corded which is way more powerful. It's bagged so you have to empty it far less often. The compact is also pretty light. And it's about $120 less than the dyson.

That said, the total package weight on Amazon is 3x as much. That includes multiple heads and accessories, so it doesn't weigh that much in practice. If you have stairs, this will definitely be harder to move up and down. That said, doing my stairs is the ONLY time I ever even lift my vacuum; it's meant to roll, so you never really have to pick it up unless you're storing it somewhere weird.

Is there any special tips I should be doing to take care of it? We wash the filter after every use and let it dry. Should I remove that spinning brush even tho I only have hardwoods?

Self Propelled vacuums aren't even that great anyways. Really awkward and jerky.

If you are comfortable owning two vacuums, I might suggest the Eureka 1934 Upright and the Eureka Mighty Mite Pet Edition Canister. The 1934 is one of the most simple and reliable vacuums on the market, but it works very well on carpets and is pretty lightweight. It's the same design used in Eureka's heavy duty Sanitaire line of vacuums, and has been in production for at least 30-40 years with a few small changes here and there. The Mighty Mite would pretty much be useful for anything else, especially the stairs.

Personally, I don't think an upright can clean hard floors nearly as well as a canister. This is due to the higher concentration of suction at the floor nozzle of a canister compared to that of an upright, which has a large brushroll that the air has to move around.

That being set, if you are dead set on an upright, either of those Hoovers should be fine. In fact, I'm 90% sure that those two are the same model, just with different exteriors. The Windtunnel MAX might be a bit newer, but don't quote me on that.

I can see how it would be nice to have for small spills like that, but especially with Dysons, where the price is much higher, I can't justify spending that much money on a machine that would only be good for tiny spills and short cleaning. I wish i could recommend the vacuum we own but it's sadly way too pricey. If you're interested in the type it's a miele canister vacuum, I highly recommend it because they work so well but it's quite pricey. I think the lowest price is $299.

For ones that aren't that high priced you might try out this handheld vacuum to quickly suck out any pet hair that may be on furniture.

If you're looking for a larger vacuum that is upright and a lift-away this one might be useful to you. It's lightweight and comes with pet tools.

If upright vacuums aren't you're thing you might like this canister vacuum. It's compact and appears to have an easy empty dirt tank so you might not need to buy vacuum bags which will save you some money.

I had no idea about the HomeCare model and my mother just phoned and said she visited our local Miele dealer who offered that model (C1 Homecare) for $600. He also offered her a C3 Softcarpet for $700 which I see retails for $800.

So, here's my question: which model? I understand the C1 has a shorter cord and not as enclosed a filtration system, but is the extra $100 worth the upgrade from the C1 Homecare to the C3 Soft Carpet?

Frankly, I'm very happy with both choices as they seem to be fine options.

What should I be considering?

I saw you're still replying to things in here as of a few days ago, so crossing my fingers you'll be able to help me out. My fiance and I want to add a vacuum to our wedding registry (expecting it'll be a "group gift" thing, since $$$). I was looking at the Miele Compact C2 Electro+, but wanted your advice:

We have two cats and a dog. I have somewhat long hair. We currently live in a townhouse that's fully carpeted, but we plan to move shortly after the wedding and wan't to live somewhere with hardwood floors and/or only partial carpeting.

Is the C2 Electro+ a good option for us? Or should we splurge for something like the C3 Cat & Dog? Also, is the SEB228 Electrobrush that comes with the C2 the same as an "electric powerbrush" that I saw you mention in a comment to another user with carpets?

Ok ladies: holy crap when that vacuum guy did those AMAs he recommended this beauty. I have a roomba too, but this thing actually makes vacuuming fun. The bags can hold a lot and it's nice to not deal with cleaning out the (expensive) bagless vacuum I used to use. This also sucks better. The cord is absurdly long, too, and it comes with all the attachments standard.

So. If you're in the market, I would HIGHLY recommend this. Cleaning hair out of vacuums is the worst.

I bought a Miele S2121 Capri Canister Vacuum Cleaner almost 4 years ago (Amazon link) and think it's pretty great!


However, it has an incredibly strong smell whenever I turn it on - I'm assuming it's the motor. I've tried replacing the bag and filter on it, but get the same smell, and it lingers in whatever room I'm vacuuming for quite a while. Any suggestions on what to clean or if there is something to replace that I'm not thinking about?

I just wanted to thank you for your last AMA. I bought a Miele C2 cannister vac as a result (could not quite convince the spouse to spring for the C3). I have mostly laminate and linoleum, with some area rugs and carpeted bedrooms, and two large dogs. The Miele does a really good job on the rugs, and I love not using a broom on the smooth floor surfaces anymore! I never would have known about this brand if not for you!

We put this in a corner of the kitchen. It makes a daily sweeping with a light broom extremely easy. We also have a Dyson Animal, but it's heavy; although great for getting hair out of the car.

I've had a Bissell Zing for about two years now and I really like it. It's small and light but powerful, it comes with a brush that has a setting for hardwood or carpet (I have wood floors but I've used it on some low pile area rugs too) and I've bought some third-party attachments that work really well with it. It's currently $88 but you can catch it on sale for $49.

We dust broom to this eye vac in the corner. Works great. Then Bona for wet mop.

Eureka Mighty Mite. Amazing vacuum for $60. I have it for my 2k Sq foot house and it has incredible suction and is easy to use. Always go bagged and stay away from bagless vacs.

Although strangely, it appears to be unavailable right now...it was $329. Definitely an interesting option though, much lower in price and considering I've maybe vacuumed 4 times in my life heading into my new place, getting something lower end might make more sense as I learn how to use it.

This one worked great for us. I'd only use it on carpet. I'd get something like this for wood and tile. Former will toss mabye 5-10% of debris on hard surfaces around rather than suck it up. But the attachments are great and performance on carpet is insane.

The latter I just use for hard surfaces because it's very light and maneuverable and doesn't throw stuff anywhere.

First time I used the former on carpet instead of the previous, old one we had, like a whole canister of rabbit hair (we're rabbit people) I couldn't even tell was in the carpet got sucked right up. Damn near sprouted wood it was so sexy.

I am wayyy late on this AMA, but what's your opinion of the Bissell Zing? After my trusty Eureka Oxygen 6999 canister vac died after something like a decade of use, I ordered the Zing, seeing quite a few good reviews on Amazon for its performance on hard floors (I have wood floors, only a few rugs here and there, 3 kids but no pets). Omg how have I been a dog owner for 10 years with hardwood floors and only got this when I was pregnant???

Now that I have a constantly shedding lab and a crawling baby, I use it daily on about 700 sq feet. Does an amazing job and my floors have never looked cleaner.

Miele canisters are suppose to very good at controlling particulates. Though I don't have any personal experience with Miele Compact C2 Electro+ Canister Vacuum, it's apparently the Wirecutter's best pick for filtering allergen.

The problem with the Quartz is that it lacks a powerbrush head. If you want an S6 with a powerbrush, you can get the Topaz. But, it's more expensive than the S2 HomeCare, with is a much better kit.

If you're wanting a vacuum for a future larger home, then you'll want one with a bigger capacity that is in the S6. I'd really recommend an S8, if you can budget for it.

I'm looking at the Miele C2 Complete. I have a mixture of tile, laminate, and carpet in a 1050 sq ft condo. (Carpet in living room and both bedrooms, laminate in kitchen, tile in the entry way and bathrooms.

Is this something you'd recommend? Or is there something that I could get a little cheaper that would do a similar job? I called around to the certified Miele dealers in my area and they said that they never have refurbished models because no one ever wants to get rid of them.. Must be a good sign.

Miele C1 would be a good choice. It's the cheapest canister they offer, but straight suction is all you really need with hardwood floors. I would add the parquet twister, and possibly a turbo nozzle (STB-205) for the rugs, depending on the type.

If it's mostly wood floor and a couple of low-pile rugs, then the grey Miele C1 Classic would work for you. Don't know what a sherpa fleece couch looks like, but the vac comes with an upholstery tool for furniture, which you can simply switch it with the floor head.

Saw this at the hair salon I went to last week and decided I can no longer live without it for this exact reason.
